The tagline states, "Only love can bring you to your senses." Well, your senses have to be pretty dulled to love At First Sight. On paper the story--based on the writings of medical writer extraordinaire Oliver Sacks (Awakenings)--is intriguing: a blind man regains sight after surgery yet can never connect with what he sees, including a lovely new girlfriend. Indeed, maybe blind was better. From such interesting stuff (and a talented cast) comes a tepid love story and an unconvincing drama.

Val Kilmer plays Virgil, a serene resort worker who plays hockey in the dark and is the best masseur this side of the Catskills. Onto his table comes Amy, a bone-weary NYC architect (Mira Sorvino) who cries the first time Virgil does his magic. Instead of a voyage into the world of blindness, Amy's first instinct is to take Virgil to an eye doctor who can restore sight (Bruce Davison). Virgil receives sight, crumbling the trust between him and Amy. The clichés start building up and by the time Amy is wooed by her ex-husband (Steven Weber), her boss no less, one's patience wears thin.

The medical curiosities of the story--Virgil can see an item but can't grasp what it is until he touches it--do not translate well on screen. The film's liveliest character is Nathan Lane as a teacher of the blind. A scene with Virgil that gets to the heart of his ailment is so filled with spontaneity, one wonders if it was scripted or simply Lane's own extemporaneous dialogue. After an admirable start as a director (Guilty by Suspicion), Oscar-winning producer Irwin Winkler has not been able to put cinematic highs or believable angst into his films (The Net, Night in the City). At First Sight may look good, but it is blind where it counts. --Doug Thomas

The irresistible casting of John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale highlights this predictable romantic comedy, which combines the romantic yearning of An Affair to Remember and the New York charm of You've Got Mail. It all begins "a few years ago," when New Yorker Jonathan (Cusack) meets Brit beauty Sara (Beckinsale). They share a few perfect hours together before parting ways, leaving future encounters to her quirky obsession with fate. "A few years later," they're about to marry their respective fiancés (reluctantly, of course), and urgently hoping for destiny to bring them back together. Under the casual direction of Peter Chelsom (barely recovering from Town & Country), this starry-eyed romance offers no surprises, but it has a comforting familiarity, made warmer by the easy chemistry of the leads, with obligatory best-friend support by Molly Shannon and long-time Cusack pal Jeremy Piven. It's hokey, but die-hard romantics are sure to be forgiving. --Jeff Shannon

Writer/director Ol Parker's debut takes its title from "Happy Together" by the Turtles ("Imagine me and you / and you and me") and its inspiration from the romantic comedies of Richard Curtis (Love Actually). There's a twist. Flower shop owner Luce (Lena Headey, The Brothers Grimm) is gay. Newlywed Rachel (a convincingly UK-accented Piper Perabo, Lost and Delirious) is straight. The two meet at Rachel's wedding--Luce designed the floral arrangements--and feel an instant connection. Rachel brushes it off. After all, the charming Heck (Matthew Goode, Match Point) was her best friend long before he became her husband. Shortly after the ceremony, however, she begins to feel as if something is missing. She starts making excuses to see Luce. First it's to thank her for the flowers, then it's to invite her to dinner with Heck and their on-the-make pal Cooper (a hilarious Darren Boyd)...who's crushed when he discovers that Luce prefers women. Rachel, meanwhile, finds married life pleasant enough, but only really feels alive when she's with Luce. It's tricky, because she loves Heck and doesn't want to hurt his feelings, so she and Luce decide to stop seeing each other. But the bond between the two is too powerful for either to resist. What it may lack in originality, Imagine Me & You makes up for in an enchanting soundtrack and sensitive performances from its three likable leads. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Piper Perabo lights up the screen as Rachel, a blushing bride whose perfect nuptials take a surprising turn at the altar. An innocent glance between Rachel and an unexpected wedding guest is all it takes to spark a 'love at first sight' romance with a surprising twist -- the object of Rachel's affection is a smart and sensuous... woman! Their shocking romance causes quite a stir amongst her family and friends as Rachel is forced to choose between her husband and the girl of her dreams. Say 'I do' to the wonderfully witty film that Cosmopolitan calls "a refreshing romantic comedy."

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie!.......2007-07-05

I had heard some of my friends talking about this movie and decided to check it out. I happened to catch it one evening on a premium channel. I ordered it the next day. This movie is funny, serious, sad and happy all at the same time. I wouldn't label it a gay movie because it is a story of love at first sight and the gender does not matter. I highly recommend this movie whether you are straight or gay. It is a fun movie.

2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2007-06-18

A young bride walks slowly down the aisle on the arm of her father, toward the waiting groom.A glance to the side and her eyes meet those of a woman in the side aisle and , in that fleeting glance is the

recognition of a soul mate. In that brief moment, her life is changed forever, although she is not yet aware of it.Without really understanding why, she feels the need to broaden her friendship with this woman.

But this only leads to more confusion about her own emotions. At first she cannot understand just what this feeling is, but she gradually becomes aware that she is feeling a passion, far and away greater than

anything she ever felt before and certainly more than she feels for her husband, made all the more devastating by the fact that it is for another woman, although in this case, who could possibly blame her.

Finally, driven to confront the object of her grand passion, she finds that her feelings are returned, leaving her with a dilema which the movie solves with a typically contrived final chase scene, to a happy

ending. So far so good, the makings of an entertaining little romance.
The problem, in my opinion, is that the director has chosen to present this romance, a story based upon an unstoppable passion, with a total lack of passion, or indeed any overt show of affection, let alone

love.Luce never shows any great affectionfor Rachel although numerous occasions arise where a growing attraction could have been introduced, for example at the soccer match when Luce puts her arms

around Rachel, or when they just fail to kiss. In the confrontation scene in the flower shop, just prior to that pathetic schoolgirl embrace among the flowers, Luce seemed to exhibit more curiosity than sympathy

for the turmoil that Rachel was going through. And then the best show of eternal love that the director can come up with is to have Luce say "I want you". What for, to help out in the store. What ever

happened to the old fashioned " I LOVE YOU ". How come neither protagonist ever got around to that simple expression of feeling? And this is the 21st century; we have become quite accustomed the the

fact that physical love is an essential part of passion. Sex is O.K and entirely appropriate and, in this situation not gratuitous but necessary. There has to be an overwhelming motivation for Rachel to cast aside

the bonds of convention, leave her husband, alienate her friends and family and one quick little romp in the flowers is not convincing. In the commentary the director indicated that he felt that it would be asking

too much of the actors to go any further. Nonsense! Both leads are totally professional competant actors and if the script calls for it would have no problem going as far as the story line requires. It is the

director's call. The supporting cast are all adequate and the overall tone of the movie is what you would expect for a fluffy little romance, but this could have been so much more. What a shame to waste a good

storyline. If you would like to see how such a grand passion should be handled, I suggest you rent " When night is falling"

I bought this movie because I loved it's plot. I was thrilled when I watched it and found it to be a very sweet film. It's plot is believable because I saw myself in this movie. I was the other woman and could relate to Luce falling in love with a married women. My road wasn't so short, but I also got the girl in the end. When I need a pick me up I put this movie on and it reminds me of the magic of falling in love, whether it be with a man or a women. But it also brings in the reality of your actions and the pain all must feel along the way. I wouldn't have wanted this movie to change in anyway. I love this movie.

Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the most original films in recent years, a truly mesmerizing accomplishment..........2007-06-26

Very rarely does a film come around that is so utterly flawless I have absolutely nothing negative to say in its behalf. `Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' is that movie. From start to finish, from its script to its cast to its brilliant direction, `Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' is fantastic, engaging, entertaining and most of all genuinely refreshing, unique and completely original and that is a facet of film that is very rarely attached to a motion picture. All to often the same concept is revisited time and time again with different actors but the same story is being told, and while the underlining moral behind this film, of the haste in action and the reversal of consequence, I can't say has never been broached I can honestly say it's never been exploited with such sheer brilliance and most likely never will again.

The film tells the story of Joel, played by Jim Carrey in his finest performance to date, a man who falls in love with a woman any man would be lucky to find. Clementine is funny, spunky and sincere, nothing like anyone Joel or maybe even the movie going public has ever met and immediately he is absorbed and content in her light. Everything is going perfect, going as expected. They love, they fight, they live and they repeat. They have a normal, healthy relationship until one day when Clementine doesn't remember Joel. Joel soon finds that Clementine had a procedure done to erase him from her memory and so in haste he decides to do the same only to realize partway through the process that his best memories are of her. He struggles to save her, hide her away in the corners of his mind and his fight is so remarkable and heartbreaking to watch.

Director Michel Gondry is a masterclass of a director, and here he is so remarkably in tune with his characters and their surroundings that every scene jumps from the screen and into our skin. Every scene, every prop is a perfect compliment to the actors and dialog and chemistry that just illuminates and oozes forth with utter satisfaction. The cast is also at the top of their game. As I mentioned Carrey himself gives us the best performance of his career breathing so much maturity coupled with adult naivety into Joel that he becomes the man we know or perhaps even are. Winslet though is a revelation as Clementine giving one of if not the best individual performance of the past decade. Her character is not an easy character to create let alone master yet she effortlessly becomes Clementine and thus we become enthralled in every scene she accompanies. The mere fact that Kate Winslet is nothing more than `Oscar Nominated' infuriates me to no end, but that is for another discussion.

The supporting cast of talented actors is flawless. Kirsten Dunst is charming and fun and Mark Ruffalo is brilliant as always. Even Elijah Wood, an actor I've never really felt owned it, surprised me and put in a great performance despite its lack of length. Plus, any movie with the great Tom Wilkinson is worth its weight in gold, and the subplot involving his infidelitious doctor is a great asset to the film.

`Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' dissects the most common of problems, human relationships, and does so with such grace and candor that the audience is involved and invested in every second of running time. It beautifully captures the very real feelings of pain, abandonment and despair and the very childish ways that we as adults so often deal with those feelings and then of course the negative affect they have and our humane struggle to correct the problem before we're forced to live with it. Charlie Kaufman's script is perfect, not a flaw in sight, and the casting of Winslet and Carrey in the leads was genius. Neither of these actors, despite their rich resume, has ever accomplished what they have with this film as far as depth and richness of character. `Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' may have been snubbed the Oscar for Best Picture, heck, it wasn't even nominated, but it proved to me to be the best picture of that said year and maybe even of many years that precede and proceed.

5 out of 5 stars My All-Time Favorite Movie.......2007-06-24

Words cannot sum up my love for this movie. It's unique, quirky, funny, romantic, sad, and simply fascinating.

One of the movie's masterstrokes was the way that time was handled. If you don't already know, Joel (Jim Carrey) decides to have the memory of his ex-girlfriend (Clementine - Kate Winslet) erased after she did the same to him. Most of the movie takes place in his memories as they are being erased. However, the memories are erased in reverse-chronological order. So it starts with these very negative memories about their breakup which only confirm the need for the operation. Then, as he travels back in time through more positive memories, he realizes how much he still loves her and he changes his mind about the operation. Of course, since he's asleep, he has trouble figuring out a way to do that. If the movie had shown their relationship go from good to bad, then it would not have been near as touching. Here we get to see that no matter how bad things seem, there are always good memories and the love is still inside somewhere. Both hopelessness and the feeling of love build up concurrently making the film a very intense emotional experience. The last memories (chronologically the first) were unbelievably touching.

Another thing that made this film great was the dialogue. In modern films, it is rare to see dialogue so eloquent. If you like classic movies, then this may be your film. The dialogue was one of the reasons that the scene in the beachhouse moved me so much.

The music needs mention too. The soundtrack is amazing and very emotional. My favorites are the song played during the opening and closing credits and the song that was played backwards (fitting, huh?) before, during, and after the beachhouse scene.

If you haven't seen this movie, do so immediately. It is so unique and very touching. It also has some nice comedic moments although the film is more of a "Twilight Zone" romance than a comedy. Being an image-conscious male, the number of movies that made me cry I can count on one hand. This one is the pinky.

5 out of 5 stars A True Gem!.......2007-05-29

Everytime I watch this film it never gets old. Amazing acting across the board. I cannot recommend this film enough. Just make sure to see this.

4 out of 5 stars Could this mark a new direction for romantic comedies?.......2007-05-29

A romantic comedy that breaks away from the tired formula. Its worthwhile and I enjoyed it. The only thing I didn't like was the scenes inside the apartment of Stan (Mark Ruffalo) and Mary (Kirsten Dunst) goofing off while Joel (Jim Carrey) lies unconcious on the bed - jumping around half naked on the bed and so forth. It felt forced. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet give great performances while the others aren't on the same level.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a Pleasant Surprise!.......2007-05-28

If you've ever wanted to forget something painful or wanted to never forget something precious...this movie will strike a cord in you.

I was watching this movie for pure entertainment, I admit. I was killing time. I knew it was different. I had no real expectations going into it. But the story line is compelling and thought provoking. And suddenly entertainment becomes so much more.

I wish more movies were this way. I love an open ended story that allows the audience to bring themselves into it. And forget the fluff and cookie cutter approach to traditional romances today. This movie brings in the reality of relationships and all the pain and insecurity that can come with them. It's an honest look at people. Jim & Kate's relationship isn't what I would call exemplary or a good model, but I still totally got into their connection with each other.

Yes, I really enjoyed this movie. In an age where time is precious, watching this movie is a very good use of it. Use your grey matter, people! Watch this movie and THINK!

Bob Rueland (David Duchovny) and Grace Briggs (Minnie Driver) have very little in common. Granted, they both live in Chicago and they're both a bit lovelorn, but that's about it. Still, fate has something in mind for these two somewhat-depressed souls (a construction worker and budding artist, respectively), who've both recently had brushes with death--he's a recent widower, she's just recovered from a heart transplant--and are a little more serious than their friends and relatives. After a series of misbegotten blind dates and almost-meetings, though, these two finally get together, and find that they fit seamlessly with each other. Despite their differences, they have a lot in common--in fact, quite a lot. It seems that the heart that now beats inside Grace's chest once belonged to Bob's wife (Joely Richardson), who died in a car crash. Coincidence? We think not.

A gentle, pleasing romantic comedy, Return to Me marks the directorial debut of Bonnie Hunt, an acclaimed actress known most famously for her role as Renee Zellweger's sister in Jerry Maguire. A shining, happy bright spot in whatever role she's in, Hunt has also invested the film with her trademark brand of humor: dry but sincere, sarcastic but not caustic, and with a deep current of humanity and romance. In the midst of all the permutations that fate surrounds them with, Driver and Duchovny make a pleasantly low-key couple; the triumph of the film is that despite all the contrived angst, the romance is never overly saccharine. They provide a quiet center in a film that has a fair amount of chaos in it, particularly due to Driver's extended family of Irish and Italian relatives (which occasionally tips the film into cutesy territory) and most hilariously to Driver's best friend, played by director Hunt . As a harried mother with innumerable kids and a likable oaf of a husband (James Belushi), Hunt again steals scenes effortlessly; Belushi is a comic revelation, better than he's been in years. You'll have the pleasant memories of both of these couples--one falling in love, one together for years--with you a long while after seeing this film. --Mark Englehart

With unsolicitedhelp from Grace's matchmaking grandfather (Carroll O Connor), Bob asks her out. 5 out of 5 stars Finally, A Refreshing Movie for Everyone.......2007-05-25

I thought this movie was a delight even though it was one of those "that'll never happen" movies. The whole family can watch and enjoy it, so it was worth every penny. I plan to share it with friends.

4 out of 5 stars Nice couple-in-love or family flick.......2007-05-19

Enjoyable. Bought only because girlfriend likes to re-watch favorite movies regularly (and VHS copy finally broke). Otherwise, would have rented and been fine.

5 out of 5 stars Very romantic... Interestingly modern moral dilemma.......2007-05-12

I admit it I am a fan of both (actually several) stars of this movie. After Minnie Driver's new show on FX the Riches, reminded me how much I liked her, I got to remembering this film, then coincidentally it was showing on broadcast TV the other day when I came home from work and my wife was watching it and told me to order it, so I did, and we watched it with our youngest who also enjoyed it very much.

But this is a very sweet and touching tale with an interesting twist that is strong on a not too subtle metaphor.
Watch this with your sweetheart for a romantic night at home.

5 out of 5 stars CUTE AND TYPICAL OF SOME FAMILIES.......2007-05-02

THIS IS A CUTE MOVIE ,THOUGH SOME OF THE LANGUAGE IS NOT GOOD FOR CHILDREN,ONE OF MY FAVORITES.

4 out of 5 stars Very good romantic comedy.......2007-02-18

From an absurd plot - Chicago architect Duchovny falls in love with the much younger woman who (unknown to him) has received the transplanted heart of his dead wife - first time director Bonnie Hunt (who also has a good role in the movie) has crafted a very good romantic comedy. Minnie Driver, in particular, as the virginal Grace (this is a very catholic movie) has never been better as the object of Duchovny's chaste affection. The main question of the movie is how Duchovny will react when he learns about Grace's history - and how that will affect their relationship. The film is also a paean to a particular milieu - working class ethnic America, particularly the Italian, Polish and Irish groups that intersect in Chicago - that is fast disappearing as a result of assimilation.

The winner of 10 Academy Awards, this 1961 musical by choreographer Jerome Robbins and director Robert Wise (The Sound of Music) remains irresistible. Based on a smash Broadway play updating Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the 1950s era of juvenile delinquency, the film stars Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer as the star-crossed lovers from different neighborhoods--and ethnicities. The film's real selling points, however, are the highly charged and inventive song-and-dance numbers, the passionate ballads, the moody sets, colorful support from Rita Moreno, and the sheer accomplishment of Hollywood talent and technology producing a film so stirring. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim wrote the score. --Tom Keogh

Description

This brilliant (The New Republic) film sets the ageless story of Romeo and Juliet against a backdrop of gang warfare in 1950s New York. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins and scripted by Ernest Lehman, the film combines Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's unforgettable score ( Maria, America, 'somewhere, 'tonight ) with Robbins own exuberant choreography to achieve an exhilarating work of art (Saturday Review). A love affair is fated for tragedy amidst the vicious rivalry of two street gangsthe Jets and the Sharks. When Jets member Tony (RichardBeymer) falls for Maria (Natalie Wood), the sister of the Sharks leader, it's more than these two warring gangs can handle. And as mounting tensions rise, a battle to the death ensues, and innocent blood is shed in a heartbreaking finale.

5 out of 5 stars West Side Story.......2007-07-02

Adapted by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins from the long-running Broadway play, this triumphant production combines a brilliant score and jaw-dropping choreography with a heart-rending tale of doomed love. The leads work well together, with Wood particularly effective, but supporting players Russ Tamblyn (as Jet leader Riff), Chakiris and Rita Moreno (as Bernardo's sassy girlfriend Anita) virtually eclipse the stars with their intense moves and portrayals. This vibrant film is also elevated by an unsurpassed, evergreen Bernstein/Sondheim score. Winner of a staggering ten Oscars, including Best Picture.

5 out of 5 stars West Side Story (Full Screen Edition.......2007-06-27

I don't have much to say about this DVD as I only purchsed it for my husband, he is very pleased with the order, he only bought this DVD as he likes Westside story and has seen it numerous times and loves it, he thinks it is the best musical that ever was made

4 out of 5 stars West Side Not Snorie.......2007-06-27

West Side Story is a clasic. The theam is almost timeless, and the songs are first rate. Anyone who enjoys good music, and/or acting should make an effort to view this film.

5 out of 5 stars Gonna Rock It Tonight!.......2007-05-30

My goodness, after wearing out my old VHS copy, it was amazing to see this in such clarity. The one-hour documentary and production home movies and stills were fascinating!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Movie's OK..........2007-05-11

"West Side Story" is an interesting film to analyze. It won Best Picture in 1961; it's #41 on The American Film Institute's Top 100; But look at the top 250 films according to the Internet Movie Database. It's nowhere to be found..."West Side Story" is not, in my opinion, a masterpiece. It's a good film, but it's overly long and none of the singers are particularly good (except Marni Nixon, who dubbed Natalie Wood's vocals), and it's also very cheesy. A modern update of Romeo & Juliet, a movie about rival gangs that sing and dance. It's almost campy.

The movie takes place in New York, where the rival gangs The Jets (whites) and The Sharks (Puerto Ricans) frequently fight for the right to certain turf. After a school dance, a Jet named Tony (Richard Beymer) falls for Maria (Wood), the Puerto Rican sister of Bernardo (George Chakiris) the leader of The Sharks. The film features such memorable tunes as "I Feel Pretty" and "Gee, Officer Krupke."

It's definitely well made, as the acting is fine, and the choreography is superb...But at 2 hours and 30 minutes, I was thinking (once it hit the 90-minute mark) "END ALREADY!" I guess I should clarify however that I'm not a very big fan of musicals and I guess if you are, you'll probably like "West Side Story" a lot more than I did. But I think this is one of the 10 or so films that appear on the A.F.I. list that I can honestly say don't deserve to be there.

Italian star and filmmaker Massimo Troisi was dying of heart failure even before this film, his dream project, began production, and he prevailed upon British director Michael Radford (White Mischief) to see him and the film through to the end. (The 40-year-old Troisi, a beloved comic actor in Italy, died the day production wrapped.) Based on true events, Troisi plays a shy postman who strikes up an unlikely friendship with exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret). Through Neruda's example and tutelage, the hero learns to think of his Italian fishing village in lyrical terms, as well as how to talk to women and even find the strength to take his political stands. Sweet as it is, the film finally pushes beyond its charming borders to become an even more complex and poignant story about the pain of growing into one's destiny. --Tom Keogh

This silky smooth film noir pits gruff police detective Dana Andrews, stiff and blunt in his street-bred manners, against a cultured columnist and acidic wit (Clifton Webb at his prissiest) in a battle of wits during a murder investigation. The cop is a romantic hiding under a hard-boiled exterior who falls in love with the beautiful victim through the portrait that hangs in her apartment. Gene Tierney, whose heart-shaped face mixes the exotic with the girl next door, brings the poise and calm of a model to her role as the object of every man's gaze and the target of a killer. Laura, handsomely shot in dreamy black and white, is the first and best of Otto Preminger's cool, controlled murder mysteries. In the gritty world of film noir it remains the most refined and elegant example of the genre, but under the tasteful decor and high-society fashions lies a world seething in jealousy, passion, blackmail, and murder. Vincent Price costars as a blithe gigolo and David Raksin's lush theme has become a wistful romantic standard. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Nominated for five Academy Awards®, this stylish mystery thriller twists and turns with new suspects, new evidence and unexpected revelations. A wealthy journalist (Clifton Webb) becomes entranced with a beautiful young career woman named Laura (Gene Tierney). But shortly before her wedding to a dashing young playboy (Vincent Price), she is found murdered. Stirred by her portrait, the detective (Dana Andrews) assigned to her case finds that he, too, is strangely under Laura's spell.

5 out of 5 stars Laura.......2007-06-25

Preminger's impeccable murder-mystery is in many ways the standard against which all other noirs tend to be judged. Eerie and smart, with lots of deliciously twisted feints and counter-feints around the central questions of murder, blackmail, and poisonous passion, "Laura" is a marvel of confounding revelations. Add to that a superb cast: Tierney, enchanting as always, as the lust object; Andrews as a cop with a weakness for beauty; Price as an effeminate rogue; Webb as a prissy critic with a viper's tongue; and Anderson as Laura's scheming, jealous aunt. Preminger's stylish touch and confident direction earned this clever, mesmerizing whodunit five Oscar nods--and movie lovers' eternal admiration.

5 out of 5 stars Orpheus in the Underworld.......2007-06-22

What makes this film endlessly watchable is the fact that "Laura" is one of the great mythological stories of the movies -- the search for the dead woman in the underworld of the past -- interwoven with the elements of film noir. Almost everything about this film is perfect (I have a sneaking doubt or two about Vincent Price), especially the completely natural way in which Laura sleeps around, has lovers in her apartment, and is a professional sleeper-upper, and no one makes the slightest negative comment about her. This in the 1940's! The best thing about the film is, as everyone says, the moment when Laura appears: the fantasy fulfillment of all fantasy fulfillments (though maybe the hat is a little much). Second best is the interrogation scene: the harsh light on Laura reminds us that this is a film about the image of woman on film. Very influential on every subsequent film with this theme -- especially Out of the Past and Vertigo. A masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Laura.......2007-06-14

This is what people are talking about when they say, "They don't make movies like this any more." Gene Tierney is luminous, Dana Andrews is tall, dark, and handsome, and the supporting cast are all creepily suspicious. Fascinating character development and witty dialogue. Timeless!

The hit Broadway musical from the 1940s gets a lavish if not always exciting workout in this 1955 film version directed by old lion Fred Zinnemann (High Noon). Gordon MacRae brings his sterling voice to the role of cowboy Curly, and Shirley Jones plays Laurie, the object of his affection. The Rodgers and Hammerstein score includes "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top," "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," and "People Will Say We're in Love," and Agnes DeMille provides the buoyant choreography. Among the supporting cast, Gloria Grahame is memorable as Ado Annie, the "girl who cain't say no," and Rod Steiger overdoes it as the villainous Jud. --Tom Keogh

The first Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration, this Academy Award winner for Best Score features the classic songs "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top" and "People Will Say We're In Love."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Oklahoma!.......2007-06-26

Though the film is long and contains a fairly high corn factor, it's also visually stunning, and truly soars whenever the music and dancing starts, with peerless renditions of "People Will Say We're In Love," "The Surrey With The Fringe On The Top," and the immortal title tune. The dance numbers, choreographed by Agnes de Mille, are original and exuberant, while Steiger and Gloria Grahame turn in fine performances, respectively playing the dastardly Jud and the naively amorous Ado Annie, "the girl who can't say no."

5 out of 5 stars One of the all time great musicals.......2007-05-13

The music is great as well as the singing and acting. This movie is a visual treat for the eyes and it has great dancing as well. If you love musicals (particularly those made in the 40's 50's and 60's) than you will love this movie. While this movie has a dark side for the most part it reflects the optimism that seems to be so much a part of the American character. Watch it you will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Purchase for use in Europe.......2007-04-23

I was so disappointed on receipt of the Oklahoma DVD that it would not work outside of the USA. I am sure it is well the cost.

5 out of 5 stars An American original.......2007-04-05

This version of "Oklahoma" will always remain my favorite. Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones are sheer perfection. Every single Rodgers and Hammerstein song including "Oh What a Beautiful Morning,""People Will Say We're in Love," "The Surrey With the Fringe on Top," "I'm Just a Girl Who Can't Say No," and the title song are romantic, humorous, original and beautifully sung and directed. This show is considered the quintessential American musical and after experiencing the amazing on-location sets, costumes, choreography by Martha Graham, dream sequence, and charming and delightful overall mood of this movie, you'll be humming these tunes for days!

4 out of 5 stars Great music. lyrics.......2007-03-17

One of Rodgers and Hammerstein's best. I think 4.5 would be more accurate. But not quite up to "The Sound of Music", or "The King and I"

"There are angels over the streets of Berlin," quotes the movie poster, but these are like no angels you've ever seen. Bundled in dark overcoats, they watch over the city with ears open to the heartbeat of the human soul, listening to the internal musings and yearnings of earthbound humans like existential detectives. In these delicate, astounding scenes we float through the thoughts of dozens Berlin citizens, from the weary and worn to the hopeful and young, as the angels record the magic moments for some heavenly record. But when Damiel (the empathic and sensitive Bruno Ganz) falls in love with an angel of another sort, the lonely trapeze artist Marion (willowy, sad-eyed Solveig Dommartin), he gives up the contemplation and observation of life to experience it himself.

Wim Wenders's most purely romantic film is like poetry on celluloid, a celebration of the transient and fragile moments of being human: the warmth of a cup of coffee on a cold day, the embrace of a friend, the touch of a lover, the rapture of love. Opening with an angel's-eye view of Berlin in silvery black and white (delicately captured by the great cinematographer Henri Alekan, who photographed Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast 40 years earlier), it transforms into a gauzy color world when Damiel "crosses over" by sheer will. Peter Falk plays himself as a fallen angel with a special sensitivity for celestial visitors ("I can't see you, but I know you're there," he proclaims), and Otto Sander, whose smiling eyes brighten a face etched by eons of waiting and watching, is Damiel's partner. Wenders made a sequel in 1993, Faraway, So Close, and Hollywood remade the film as City of Angels with Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan. --Sean Axmaker

Description

From Oscar®-nominated* writer/director Wim Wenders (Buena Vista Social Club) comes this "exhilarating" (Vanity Fair) and life-affirming tale that won him the 1987 Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival and inspired City of Angels. Co-written with Peter Handke, this "enchanting" (The New York Times) film about the joy of life is "that rare thing a work of true originality" (Newsweek)! Damiel (Bruno Ganz) is a lonely angel who roams the streets of Berlin providing comfort to mortals in need. But when he is drawn into the life of a beautifuland troubledtrapeze artist, he experiences love for the first time and does everything in his power to be seen, heard and felt by her. Jeopardizing his divine position, Damiel is faced with a most difficult decision: either give up love or lose his eternal wings forever! *1999: Documentary Feature, Buena Vista Social Club

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An almost impossible movie to review.......2007-06-30

Angel sees a cute trapeze artist, gets tired of being a spectator and decides to become a participant. That pretty much sums up the plot. Wasn't that easy? Explaining exactly what this movie actually is about is a tad more challenging. It is mesmerizing, it is frustrating, and it seems much much longer than it actually is. It drives me crazy watching it, but every few years I am drawn back to it, just to see if I can mine a few more nuggets from it. Then it drives me crazy all over again.

It drives a lot of other people crazy, and bores them as well. As a viewer, one drifts along through the movie, waiting for something to observe something actually happening. It's not far removed from what the angels are experiencing. Perhaps the movie is intended to help us understand what these immortal angels are going through. Lucky us --- unlike Damiel & Cassiel, we get to write Amazon reviews and vent our frustrations.

5 out of 5 stars When the child was a child..........2007-06-10

I love this film. The gauzy grey shots of Berlin and the haunting angelic score create an atmosphere, nearly a dream scape into which Bruno Ganz's dissatisfied Damiel struggles with his urge to be human; to have a cup of coffee, rub his hands together in the cold, to experience rather than know.
As this film uses mostly inner monologue, it is the amazing use of expressions by Bruno Ganz and Otto Sander that give the film its emotion, or rather give the viewer their emotion. Watching Damiel "pick up" a rock and try to feel it or Cassiel follow and listen to Homer, the storyteller, made me catch my breath. Both angels are standing outside a wall they try to breach in their own way. Put that together with the fact that they are able to walk through The Wall and you've got one amazing use of film.
I recommend this film with absolutely no reservations. I'm now off to find "Far Away, So Close!" and any other Wim Wenders film I can get my hands on!

5 out of 5 stars if you didn't like this, you didn't "get it" OR you aren't a dreamer.......2007-06-01

if you are a meg ryan fan STOP READING HERE!!!!! i'm not kidding. stop.
this isn't a cutesy hollywood exploitive/derivative blathering of a movie like so many "romances" we know.
it is an entertaining [german] film with themes of desire and love. there is desire for connection and interaction, desire for physical expression, desire of passions. and love. rich boundless love. human and non-human love. love- both complicated and sad at times and easy and generous at others, i need kleenex every time. i feel uplifted every time.
now, maybe i am just a fool for true romance [and a beauty on a trapeeze,] but this is one of my all-time favorite films. (thank goodnesss you're not getting the usual roses popping up spontaneously here folks!) what wenders does is sumblime- one can see themself in the characters easily. they are faulted, genuine and believable in a context of life in "chilly" berlin and the occasional otherworldlyness. the cast is a delight to watch [falk kills me here] and you must check out nick cave and the bad seeds in the club scene.

here is a case where i wish that art was actually imitating life.

sigh.

5 out of 5 stars A Sure Cure for Depression.......2007-05-02

Somehow this story--about an angel who wants to be human--persuades you that it's wonderful to be alive. It manages this in spite of the fact that many of the humans shown are miserable.

5 out of 5 stars So Beautiful... So German.......2007-01-30

This film is touching and poetic, beautiful and desolate. It is truley of the post-war zietgiest, interspersed footage of the clean up of Berlin and multiple references to the toll taken on the German people by the Third Reich.
The story of Damiel's love for the trapeze artist is almost secondary to his love of the human condition. This condition is masterfully shown as both euphoric and tragic through disjointed and philosophical dialouge, the haunting imagery, and Bruno Ganz childlike joy at his first cup of coffee.
I cannot recommend this film enough. 5 stars seems to sell it short. It is an absolute MUST for anyone who loves the German style of cinema.
