Glenn Savan's depressing and self-loathing novel about a 27-year-old upper-class Jewish widower mired in self-pity after his beloved wife dies, and who finds love and sexual rebirth with a trailer-trash older woman, was brought to the big screen by the competent director Luis Mandoki (When a Man Loves a Woman, Message in a Bottle). But the savage irony in Savan's book has been face-lifted by screenwriters Ted Tally (The Silence of the Lambs) and Alvin Sargent (Ordinary People) into something else entirely: what passes for low-rent "slumming" in Hollywood means hiring sexy Susan Sarandon to play Nora Baker, the poor, uneducated 43-year-old waitress in a White Palace burger joint who strikes up an unlikely relationship with sad Max Baron (James Spader). Widower Max attends a bachelor party for best pal Neil (Jason Alexander) and discovers that the local White Palace has stiffed the boys a whopping six burgers. Max barges into the joint, bent on getting his money back, and meets a testy Nora, who is bemused at the young man's insolence. While driving home, Max stops abruptly at a bar for a drink. Inside, Nora is nursing a vodka and takes a shine to the tuxedo-clad, handsome, and morose younger man. He gives her a lift, she seduces him, and the rest of the movie examines how two such opposites in manners and morals can find happiness. The only common bond they have is great sex and a private tragedy. White Palace nudges at the dark journey and the smashing of illusion that was at the heart of the novel, but there is still a fairy-tale element to the film that negates the earthy essence that distinguished the book. In Mandoki's vision, White Palace is about overcoming class, family, and outside opinion to find true love. In Savan's book, Max wastes into decline while Nora ultimately thrives in the quest for truth, redemption, and self-forgiveness. She becomes his salvation only after he stops hating himself. But mainstream Hollywood shuns making "protagonists" so mad, bad, or sad, and as such, too much glitter is tossed on Spader, while Sarandon, as usual, is the only one who seems to embody and understand her character's angst. She deserved her Oscar for Nora, not the nun in Dead Man Walking. --Paula Nechak

"What you see isn't always what you get!".......2007-05-27
I remember watching this movie long ago and I'd forgotten how sexy Susan Sarandon can be. Because of her age, (and market pressure of course) Sarandon may never be marketed or packaged and sold as sex symbol; but she should be. In White Palace, Sarandon proves my personal inclination that older women have a deliciously ample level of depth capturing and conveying the essence of womens' true sexual prowess. Or maybe this is simply evidence of my admiration for older women. In any event, this is a classy and giving love story that smolders from start to finish.
one of my favourites.......2007-05-15
This is one of those movies that you can watch over and over again. A feel good movie that is one of the best around. I love it.
Mature Romance.......2007-04-22
Don't be fooled by the steamy cover art that would lead you to believe that this is some kind of Zalman King potboiler. There are perfunctory love scenes for sure(Susan, was that a body double?) but this film is a thoughtful exploration of romance between two seemingly disparate persons that avoids both stereotyping and cliche. Both James Spader and Susan Sarandon are superb here in making us believe that their characters could bridge both the generational and cultural gaps in fulfilling a meaningful relationship. My only qualification here is I don't think that certain story elements were fleshed out enough.
White Palace.......2007-01-12
I like both actors featured in this movie.
Had seen it years ago and remembered it.
I think it is a good love story.
A bit predictable but well worth watching.

Customer Reviews:
Tom White.......2007-03-21
A fantastic ensemble performance, including Colin Friels and Bill Hunter. Set in contemporary Melbourne it depicts the breakdown and transformation of Tom White from successful middle class architect and husband to a down and out bum. Perhaps the transistion is too sudden however it captures the horror of discovering you arent the person you used to be and your past is lost or not connected to your present. Excellent effort from Alkinos Tsilimidos.

Retro Humor.......2005-04-11
You have to be in the right frame of mind to get a chuckle out of "The Three Stooges" as advanced techniques have raised expectations, but if you can transport yourself back in time, some of the routines are still cute. "Malice in the Palace" is the best on this DVD. It's based on misunderstanding and inaccurate assumptions, like most Stooge pieces are.
"Disorder in the Court" plays on another recurring Stooge theme, that of taking yourself and life too seriously. In the end the hapless baffoons save the day. It isn't as well written as "Malice," but is still an interesting piece to look at in terms of representing comedy of the era.
Fergitaboutit.......2004-09-03
The four public domain shorts are good, but everywhere.
Ted Healy was incredibly UNfunny. He held the Stooges down.
When the Stooges left that jerk, they soared. Historicly interesting;Yes. Funny; No It's a small wonder Healy got stomped to death in a bar-room.
The Three Stooges.The Early Years........2003-12-09
This DVD is great value for the price.Even more worthwhile if your interested in film history.
Four of these shorts are well known classics featuring either Curly or Shemp Howard as the third Stooge.
Some of the other shorts on this disc feature members of the Three Stooges in solo film before they came together as a team.
A couple feature the full Stooges line-up with Ted Healy.
I find the Ted Healy stuff very poor quality, but interesting if you are interested in seeing how their early vaudeville performance would have been like on stage.
poor quality made up by rarities.......2002-03-08
Buy this if you are interested in Ted Healy's productions from really early Stooge days. If not, skip it. The quality (audio and video) of the DVD is shabby...hence, the low price. There are only 4 of 12 shorts really worth owning, available on other, higher quality products.
Terrific value; great material.......2001-09-23
What a DVD! This has three hours of extremely rare, hard to find material. And its not filler, like some of the other Three Stooges collections out there; this is all content, baby. The best part about this collection is that it has many of the hard-to-find shorts with Ted Healy.
The only problem is that no effort was made to clean up the video or the sound, and the original prints from which this DVD was made seem to have been in poor shape in places. A new release, with the latest in digital remastering, will be most welcome.

James Spader is Max Baron, a 27-year-old St. Louis advertising executive who has completely shut himself off from the world in the two years since the auto accident death of his wife. When he meets free-spirited, 43-year-old burger joint waitress Nora Baker (Susan Sarandon), his attraction to the earthy, outspoken woman is immediate and overpowering. The difference in age isn't their only obstacle happiness: Nora's into Marilyn Monroe, drinking beer, and lives in Dogtown, the city's low-rent district, while Max is cultured, sophisticated, and wealthy. Despite their differences, Max and Nora are alike in their suffering and in their deep need for connection, but their charged relationship is put to the emotional test when it becomes clear that Max is hiding his affair with Nora from his upper middle-class, Jewish social circle. White Palace co-stars Renée Taylor, Eileen Brennan, Kathy Bates, Jason Alexander, and Corey Parker.
