Description
In THAT WAS THEN…THIS IS NOW, Emilio Estevez stars as Mark Jennings, a delinquent teenager who becomes overly jealous when his brother-like figure and best friend, Byron (Sheffer), gets a girlfriend (Delaney) and tries to abandon his old, bad boy ways. Already feeling alienated after being orphaned when his father killed his mother during a violently heated argument, Mark becomes jealous of Brian's new relationship and gets himself involved with drugs as a result. When Mark and Brian's mentor, Charlie Woods (Freeman), is killed, and when Byron's girlfriend's little brother is reported missing with Mark seeming to have more clues to his whereabouts than anyone else, their world changes even more as the boys' friendship is put to the ultimate test.

Action and hold your attention film........2007-06-12
This film works perfectly and it is one that you must watch because if you turn away you would miss a vital part.
wow.......2006-05-01
Not a bad movie, from from back in the 80's. (It's an adult film, not for children). Now we know what is wrong with society. If the movie follows the book except for cussing (never read the book)? Then we are letting children read about pre marital sex, car stealing, drug use, and gang violence. This is an "R" rated movie, I would hope that any teacher of children could read a rating and would have the sense not to show it to a class of underage children.
That was not That Was Then. . .This is Now........2006-04-21
I totally agree with Ms. Horkey and the Texas School Teacher. What a let down!I realize that the screenplay was written by
Emilio Estevez instead of S.E. Hinton (as in The Outsiders). I will never waste my money on or embarrass my students with anything scripted by him again. Too bad I did not read their reviews before I ordered or preview it before I showed it to my ninth graders (who are learning English as a second language). Their is no excuse or justification for such a rotten rendition of book used in schools for the past twenty years. It was so bad we had to turn off the video and just finish reading the final three chapters--totally unacceptable, and I am still angry! If you take EE's favorite F word and the two letter preposition that tends to be used with it, this describes his rendition of a wonderful work.
Made in 1985.......2006-03-24
My students had read the book so I purchased the film. It is "R" rated because there is a LOT of swearing...but it goes with the story. The acting in the fight scenes is really phony, which got the kids laughing. Also, it changes a lot of the book...but we were all glad to see it as it still pretty much followed the book.
That Was Then; This Is Now DVD.......2006-03-22
I ordered this DVD to show at school to my eighth-grade class after we read the novel; however, the language was unacceptable for the classroom. The book did not have the four-letter word nor the Lord's name in vain. Due to the foul language, I did not show the DVD. Maybe a note that the DVD is not recommended for classroom use would be helpful. In addition, it did not follow the plot in the book. My students were looking forward to viewing the movie and were disappointed that they were unable to do so.
