Description
JUDAS recounts the story of the relationship between Jesus and the disciple who becomes infamous for betraying him. When Judas (Schaech) first meets Jesus, he is unsure what to make of this simple man whose words speak volumes. Upon getting to know him better, Judas decides to become one of Jesus' twelve disciples and encourages Jesus to use his popularity to free the Jews. Jewish leaders later convince Judas of the greater good in betraying Jesus, and he decides to turn over his friend and leader to Caiaphus and Pontius Pilate who condemn Jesus to death.

4 out of 5 stars interesting and informative.......2007-04-13

I didn't know much about the Gospel of Judas, but apochryphal literature interests me, so I decided to check out this DVD and really enjoyed it. It covers the history of the only known manuscript of the Gospel of Judas and the historical context in which it was written, including the political, social, and religious events of the first and second century. There are probably more in-depth resources for someone already familiar with what this DVD covers, but as an introduction it is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars Judas isn't very controversial... it's those Gnostics...........2006-11-27

This is the usual well done, a little slow, Nat. Geog. piece about an arcane piece of antiquity which may or may not be relevant to modern Christians depending on their current beliefs.
Those who believe the current published Bible is the infallible, complete word of God will be understandably upset by the way this program basically sets the Gnostic gospels up as "missing parts" or edited parts. Controversy sells.
There was an obvious, missed opportunity to discuss some of Peter's letters where he tells early churches to stop doing many of the practices that the Gnostics continued. Practices which are referred to here as collateral information on different sects in the early church. These sects DID exist, but they were fringe groups even at that time, and Peter's letters said those practices were not of God. A missed opportunity for full information.
As with most Nat. Geog. specials, the focus here is on the scientific testing of the papyrus, the "ink"... all fascinating forensic stuff, if you like that. I do.
Where this fits or not into your religious viewpoint is what becomes contentious. There ARE multiple views expressed here, most of which think this "Judas Gospel" is irrelevant, except for the one woman who speaks in almost every "bible history" special because what she says is very fringe theology, and she makes people angry, which ramps up viewership.
If you believe Jesus was/is the omnipotent Lord, then it isn't a stretch to believe that he allready knew what Judas would do, and died for Judas' sins just as he did for everyone. So Judas alone is not that controversial (which is why they had to drop in the other Gnostic stuff).
IF you watch this DVD, be SURE to watch ALL the special feature interviews: each historians and biblical scholars gets his full (edited) say. MUCH more informative than just what was broadcasted.
If you are not interested in forensic sciences, this will be a bore, or extremely vexing. View it only as something to augment your "comparative religion" studies.

4 out of 5 stars Did someone open a door?.......2006-08-23

There are startling, powerful ideas revealed somewhat effortlessly, through this documentary. While the ideas may not be new to a very small fraction of the general public, the majority of us will be served well by such a compact introduction to gnosticism, and it's hidden role in our own history. Indeed, it is amazing how this history continues to struggle to make it's self heard.

If anyone has ever taken an Eastern Religion class and wondered why our religion, Christianity, seems so blunt by comparison, the discovery of the Gnosticism will serve as a sort of missing link, to a story-chain that didn't quite add up.

I have to concure with some of the earlier reviewers, National Geographic is a tad goofy in their production style, but they still have that great theme song! so I'm standing by them.

5 out of 5 stars Gospel of Judas Proves No Secret Stays Hidden Forever.......2006-08-09

This is a compelling film by National Geographic about the discovery and restoration of one of the lost gnostic gospels, The Gospel of Judas.

Thanks to another smear campaign by the Church, Judas, for centuries has been labeled one of history's most evil and hated men. As we learn from this film, it's actually illegal to name your child "Judas" in Germany. So, imagine the Church's reaction when the Gospel of Judas was "accidentally" found by a poor Egyptian farmer. This codex book then made its way to several book collectors until it sat in a bank safe deposit box for nearly 16 years! None of these book collectors knew what they had until one took the book to Yale University and was told that she possessed the Gospel of Judas.

The film is fascinating as some of the top experts of history and restoration gather together to try and save this book which was in terrible condition.

Once restored and legible to read, the Gospel of Judas offers some extremely compelling information about the relationship between Judas and Jesus. What if for all of these centuries, we've had it wrong? What if Judas wasn't a villain, but actually one of Jesus's greatest and most advanced disciples? What if Jesus actually asked Judas to play a role; to betray him so that his mission could be carried out to completion?

Just as Mary Magdalene has been subjected to stories of her being a sinner and a prostitute, so has Judas been bombarded with accusations of betrayal and his very name synonomous with evil itself. However, Jesus seems to predict this as he tells Judas that his very name shall be cursed through the ages for what Jesus is asking Judas to do. But, he's asking, because he knows that Judas is the only one of the twelve who KNOWS who he is! Perhaps he realizes that Judas is the only one who could carry out this role.

However, even with this knowledge, the grief (and Jesus predicts this as well) is too much for Judas to bare after having "betrayed" his Master, he ultimately commits suicide.

So many questions are coming to light now. So many secrets have obviously been buried by the Church for centuries, and they are now, finally, beginning to come back to light. No secret can stay hidden forever. There are more than 30 Gnostic Gospels which contain much more information about the teachings of Jesus. Were they cast aside because they conflicted with what the Church thought everyone should be learning? Were they cast aside because some felt they were too difficult to understand, given the level of man's understanding at that point in history?

These are interesting questions. Ultimately, each individual person must answer them for his/herself. The Church has used fear as a basis for control over its followers; fear of knowledge is their own fear.

After watching this film and reading the Gospel of Judas, you may find yourself questioning the validity and veracity of all you have ever been told is truth, and finally discovering for your Self, the truth.

4 out of 5 stars Would Be Better Without Reenactments.......2006-08-02

I wish the National Geographic Society would avoid the cheesy reenactments and dramatizations of scenes from "The Gospel of Judas." It turns this otherwise excellent documentary into a Sunday morning Bible Studies television show. No need to dumb-down this powerful story of how this Gosepl was found and authenticated. There is enough mystery and intrigue in the real story without inserting costume dramas with contemporary actors.

5 out of 5 stars JP in top form.......2007-05-21

I had a chance to see this tour in person, but circumstances beyond my control prevented me from attending. I seriously regret that. At least I have this DVD as a document of Rob Halford's triumphant return to Priest. This DVD sounds fantastic. And Rob sounds better than ever. The band sounds tight and looks happy to be playing together again. The set list is a virtual "best-of" of some of the greatest metal tunes ever written. Put it in, turn it up, and ROCK.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the Best Live Document of Judas Priest.......2007-05-20

Many, many years ago I rented the concert video of Judas Priest that was recorded during their SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE tour (which I think is one-in-the-same as the DVD "Live Vengeance '82"). All I remember is that, for some reason, it didn't do much for me (maybe there was too much 80's baggage, I don't know). Well, last Fall I saw footage of their reunion (with singer Rob Halford) tour on the DVD side of their latest recording ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION. The DVD featured clips of only five live songs or so. All I can say is that I REALLY enjoyed it; it REALLY captured my attention. It successfully gave me a hungering to see a FULL recent Priest concert. Hence, my interest in this DVD "Rising in the East" which was recorded at Tokyo's famous Budokan in May, 2005.

What really sold me on picking up this DVD was the song selection. The disk features 22 songs (23 if you count "Hellion," which is pre-recorded and simply a brief intro to "Electric Eye"). The 22 songs properly represent the band's entire career; only 4 albums are not represented in this setlist: ROCKA ROLLA (1974), DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH (1984), JUGULATOR (1997) and DEMOLITION (2001).

The albums represented and songs featured are as follows:

SAD WINGS OF DESTINY (1976): "The Ripper" and "Victim of Changes."

SIN AFTER SIN (1977): "Diamonds and Rust."

STAINED CLASS (1978): "Beyond the Realms of Death" and "Exciter."

HELL BENT FOR LEATHER (1979): "Hell Bent for Leather."

BRITISH STEEL (1980): "Metal Gods," "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight."

POINT OF ENTRY (1981): "Hot Rockin'."

SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE (1982): "Hellion/Electric Eye," "Riding on the Wind" and "You've Got Another Thing Coming."

TURBO (1986): "Turbo Lover."

RAM IT DOWN (1988): "I'm a Rocker."

PAINKILLER (1990): "A Touch of Evil" and "Painkiller."

ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION (2005): "Judas Rising," "Revolution," "Worth Fighting For," "Deal With the Devil" and "Hellrider."

COMMENTARY: The band is completely mesmerizing. All the members are dressed in black, leather and studs with not a hint of scary glam metal baggage. (Speaking of glam metal, do you know what "glam" stands for? Gay L.A. Metal -- LOL!). The energy and focus of each member is hypnotic. Rob Halford effectively skulks around the stage with a variety of leather/studded trenchcoats. The guitars are HEAVY and powerful (unlike the wimpy tinny guitar sound on LIVE MELTDOWN '98). Both Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing are in top form. Downing is especially impressive. Check out his dynamic lead solo performances at the end of "Beyond the Realms of Death" and "Victim of Changes." They're breathtaking and enrapturing.

The first song I watched upon putting the DVD in was "Beyond the Realms of Death" and, believe it or not, it was so emotionally potent tears flowed from my eyes! Yeah, it's that freakin' good.

Quite a number of reviewers have complained about Halford's performance. Don't listen to 'em. Once again, Rob's performance is utterly captivating. Is he perfect? Of course not. Does he struggle to hit a high note here or there? Of course, this is a LIVE concert. I don't think these complainers understand the dynamics of studio v.s. live performances. I used to play in a band and record, so I know. (In fact, my band opened up for Ripper Owens' JP tribute band in some s#@thole in Youngstown, OH in 1994 right before Owens joined Priest to replace Halford). In the studio you have as many takes as you want to get your performance just right. Plus you have a significant amount of time to rest between each song. Live is completely different; you have one shot, that's it. And no rest inbetween songs. When the viewer accepts these realities, Halford's performance is easier to embrace and marvel at. I also suggest (to those that complain about Halford's performance) to listen to the DVD without watching it. For some reason, HEARING Rob without SEEING him sing will enlighten you to how good this concert really is. Trust me, it's by far the best live document of Priest I've ever heard, which includes LIVE MELTDOWN '98 and the completely overrated UNLEASHED IN THE EAST.

One last thing about Halford's performance: Another reviewer pointed out that he saw the band play a few months AFTER this Budokan gig in Dallas. He noted that Rob's vocals were flawless; he easily hit all the high notes and sang falsetto. This proves that Halford's voice isn't "shot" due to old age, etc. as a few reviewers contend.

The song "Diamonds and Rust" is SO much better than the studio version. The studio version never did anything for me. I didn't hate it necessarily, but I always skipped it. The new live version is 100 times better. The new version is now a must-hear song in the Priest catalog.

SONGLIST QUIBBLES: Why does EVERY live document of Priest HAVE to include "Living After Midnight" and "Breaking the Law"? I would love to hear/see them play live without these 'hits.' Also, "Hellion/Electric Eye" is indeed a great song but it's been done to death. I wish they'd give their setlist a break from this song; I just no longer enjoy hearing it.

There are certain mandatory Priest songs that I've NEVER heard/watched played live (This is an outrage!!): "The Rage," "Dissident Aggressor," "Saints in Hell" and "Burning Up." These songs desperately need to be featured on some live document of the band, whether CD or DVD. They're just too stellar to omit.

"Painkiller" is a fast, aggressive song; but if they only had room for ONE fast, aggressive Priest tune I would have preferred "Screaming for Vengeance." It delivers a powerful message.

"Hot Rockin'" is the only song from POINT OF ENTRY. This song is catchy and likable, but ultimately forgettable. If they only had room for one song off of POINT OF ENTRY why not "Headin' Out to the Highway," "Desert Plains" or even "Solar Angels."

"Riding on the Wind" is also ultimately forgettable (although definitely likable), why not instead the powerful "Bloodstone."

Other songs that I wish were on the setlist in place of the lighter fare: "Tyrant," "Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver," "Sinner," "Stained Class," and "Rapid Fire." Also, I realize "Hell Is Home" is from the Owens' era, but this is without doubt one of Priest's all-time greatest songs -- it's a MUST-HEAR live song! All six of these songs should be featured on the live setlist here or elsewhere instead of fluff like "Hot Rockin'," "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight."

The album most represented in the songlist is understandably 2005's ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION. They did a good job selecting the best songs from this most recent recording, but I wish they would have given us something else besides "Judas Rising." This song does indeed sound heavier and more driving live, but I would have rather heard/seen "Angel," "Eulogy" or the main portion of "Lochness." All three are top-of-the-line Priest tunes.

BOTTOM LINE: This is the first and only live video I've ever bought of any metal band. You can't go wrong. It's the best live document of Judas Priest EVER. It's so mesmerizing, powerful and enthralling it'll give you friggin' goosebumps. It's so dynamic it'll make you stand up and jump & shout! It's so emotionally potent it will bring you to tears! At least this is what it did to me.

5 out of 5 stars Metal God(s).......2007-04-02

No long story but it has to be said: This DVD is pure metal bliss!
Priest with Halford is the real deal again, the sound is phenomenal. Watch it in the dark on a big screen and a good home theater system and you might just find yourself headbanging as if you were front row.
My favorites: The Ripper, Revolution and, I can't help it, Diamonds and Rust.

5 out of 5 stars Best Of The Metal Masters.......2007-03-14

I saw Judas, live in West Palm Beach.
Awesome and a great replica of the West Palm show.
Strongly recommended for all Priest fans, a must have.
Great to see the band back in action and I know they are currently working on their next album.
Long live the "Original" Masters of Metal.................

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but Halford is not in top form.......2007-02-20

I must admit I do not watch this DVD anymore. I mean, in terms of the image quality, the sound and the music performance this is a great DVD. Of course it has to be, coming, as it comes, from the Metal Gods. But somthing is missing, and it's hard to admit: Halford's voice. His classic high-pitched screams are no longer present and he struggles to escape narrowly from the highest notes. This is particularly noticeable during tracks such as 'Beyong The Realms Of Death' or 'Exciter' (the vocals are almost embarrasing during both tracks and it's sad to say).

All in all, a good DVD, but no nearly as good as the concert recorded in Memphis in December 1982.

5 out of 5 stars Their best video offering ever........2007-03-17

You simply won't get a better performance by Priest recorded on video.

This is the real deal, Priest at their best. The guitar attack of Tipton and Downing is amazing, the sound is great, Halford is also singing like never and the set list is very good.

You can't get wrong with this one.

4 out of 5 stars I used to give this 5 stars.......2007-03-05

Halford is great for most of the DVD, but man some of the stuff on here is pure cheese. Priest has graduated a bit since this 1982 Nashville, Tennesee performance. I remember watching this video over and over again about 20 years ago, but times have changed, and so have I. Metal up.

5 out of 5 stars Priest at their best!.......2007-01-31

This DVD captures Judas Priest at their best. My brother and I caught them live in Toronto Canada for their 1984 tour (still have the original concert stubs!)
A must have for any Judas Priest fan. Just ordered Electric Eye DVD from Amazon.com. My brother bought it brand new and called me to tell me it is awesome!

4 out of 5 stars Exellent way to reminisce.......2006-11-22

I saw this tour 24 years ago and it brought me right back. My only complaint is with the audio. If you're into guitars you probably favor Tipton over Downing. The audio on this DVD is mixed such that KK's guitar is almost always overpowering Glenn's. That's quite a big loss. I have a bootleg of this concert on VHS and the audio is fine. Not sure what happened here. It's still a great show and if you were there when it happened or just love Priest circa 1982 it's worth it, just know what you're getting.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best concerts I've been to..........2007-04-18

A friend and I saw this show in Dallas back in '86. We sat first risers, off to the side of the sound board. Great seats for a killer show! I saw the video tape on sale a few years later, but didn't buy it. Am so glad they reliesed this dvd...worth it to re-live the show!

5 out of 5 stars Priest at their best...........2006-06-15

In 1986, Priest were huge. The band everyone talked about. When they came around on the Fuel for Life tour, I went with maybe 20 people from my notoriously non-metal, suburban high school. So maybe the "hard core" fans who say that the Turbo era appealed to "partying jock rockers" were right. Still the concert was mindblowing, the best metal show I've ever seen, surpassing even early Dio/Queensryche shows and Black Sabbath's Headless Cross tour. The house was sold out and Halford commanded the "fine looking bunch of metal maniacs" with every gesture, every nuance, his voice cleaner and more powerful than ever, while the band delivered heavier and sped-up, energized versions of the best 80s Priest tunes. Even poppier singles Locked In and Parental Guidance and the Fleetwood Mac cover The Green Manalishi became instant Priest classics in a live setting. Desert Plains, one of the highlights of this DVD, was unfortunately left out at the show I saw, and replaced with an older and IMO vastly overrated song. The day after the show I got to meet the band, and the following Monday I proudly displayed my concert shirt in the hallways. Less than one year after the show came the Priest... Live album, one of the most powerful sounding live albums but unfortunately with some stupid editing to fit the CD format. Then came the video and I could relive the concert experience in all its glory.. almost like being at this show again. And now, the DVD version is here and it's like being transported back to 1986 all over again. It may not be Friday Nite in Dallas, TX, but The Priest is Back. Now, if they could release the FULL, not the TV edited version of the 1983 Dortmund show.

Electric Eye(2004). A DVD compilation of every Halford-era MTV video 1980-1990, the entire Fuel For Life '86 concert video, and a collection of various 70's BBC TV performances of the band.

Judas Priest was my first real induction to heavy metal music, and while anyone will argue which band is in fact the greatest, for me I've always come back to Priest first and foremost before anyone else. Iron Maiden became very famous for delivering plenty of epic harmonious classic metal songs of the NWOBHM style, while Metallica, on the other hand, were able to pull off thrash metal correctly on their first several albums; both bands taking on a sophisticated approach to metal both lyrically and musically. So most often, I've found that metal fans who prefer their music to be progressive to an extent will prefer these bands over Priest anyday.

However, many a metal fan fail to realize that playing technical and having complex songwriting isn't the only way to tackle metal. Priest falls on the other side of the spectrum where power, feeling, and hooks are emphasized over sophistication. And so here is why I consider Judas Priest to be my favorite as far as metal music goes: Over the years I've gradually built up a much broader taste in music ranging from pop to metal to industrial, to classic, to progressive, to electronic, to whatever alse... and yet no matter what I'm into, JP never gets old to me. Sure, they do not always hit the high mark, and their lyrics and songs tend to come off as corny and comical to some, but whenever JP is firing on all cylinders, they get into this special "zone" where not even Maiden or Metallica can really touch them (they still are some of my favorite metal bands though!). They throw this high degree of force and sharp edge into their music that while simplistic most of the time, lifts them above most of their peers, which is clearly evident during Priest's best songs. Listening to many of the bands that they influenced, a lot of them fail to distinguish themselves from their peers and so this is why I have always held Priest in such high regard. They manage to successfully emphasize a traditional metal sound without sounding _exactly_ like any other traditional metal band out there.

And though they often tread between catchy happy pop metal (Point of Entry, Turbo), dark and sinister (Stained Class, Defenders, Painkiller) and everything inbetween, Priest refuses to stay the same from album to album. And so that brings us to this collection:

For those that grew up during the early-mid 80s, I'm sure these videos are all a real nostalgia trip, matching visuals with the music (some successful, others look real dated).

MTV VIDEOS

Here we get every video the band has put out, including: Living After Midnight, Breaking the Law, Don't Go, Heading Out To The Highway, Hot Rockin', You've Got Another Thing Comin', Freewheel Burning, Love Bites, Locked In, and Turbo Lover. And with those are 3 more that were previously not available on any video format: Johnny B. Goode, Painkiller, and A Touch of Evil. The early videos are all very primitive, but entertaining to watch. 'Breaking The Law' is just hilarious all the way through (especially with the band holding up in a bank with guitars!). 'Don't Go' is sorta indicative of Rob's orientation well before it was announced (just watch and see). I love the part in 'Hot Rockin' where the band's instruments all catch on fire and they just keep playing! And you can tell just how primitive technology was on videos such as 'Freewheel Burning' where Rob's head is crudely placed inside a Pole Position video game, and 'Turbo Lover' with the claymation skeleton-thing chasing after Rob, KK, and Glenn. 'Locked In' and 'Painkiller' have my vote as the best vids on here, the former because of its overtly dramatic story setup (band comes in and breaks Rob away from cavemen and scantly clad hot 80s women), and the latter because the black & white steel factory look and Rob's psychotically aaaAAANGRY expressions fit the sheer brutality of the song. 'Living After Midnight', 'Love Bites', and 'Johnny B. Goode' are ok, just live lip-synchings of the songs (Rob looks absolutely ridiculous with that ponytail in 'JBG').

PRIEST...LIVE!

Here we have the entire Fuel For Life video of 15 songs performed on the Turbo tour. Though some songs from that album should definitely not be here (Parental Guidance and Rock You All Around The World come to mind immediately), the rest of the concert smokes and Priest turns out one of their best live performances despite clearly looking like a Poison or Motley Crue while doing it. The setlist will turn off 70s Priest purists, but this concert at the time was meant to showcase the band's 80s material. I especially love the sped up 'Freewheel Burning' and 'Desert Plains', screamed out 'The Sentinel' and 'Locked In', and especially 'Heading Out To The Highway' which is acutally better than the studio version, brought to life with a heavier overall sound and an added solo in the middle. My only gripe is that they placed 'Metalgods' during the credits, and it's not even the complete song! Oh well. So unless you're the sort of fan that absolutely needs to hear 'Victim Of Changes', 'Sinner', 'Beyond The Realms Of Death', and 'Exciter' in every Priest live setlist and/or you simply can't stand the sight of Halford in a mullet, then I see no reason why any other priest fan would not enjoy this concert.

BBC TV Performances

Now here's something new (old) that all Priest fans can chew on: 'Rocka Rolla' and 'Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver' played back in the band's early days on live TV! Gotta love the band in their psuedo-hippy getups (reminds me of the part in Spinal Tap where it show's the band's psychadelic days). I can't say I really like the album 'Rocka Rolla' much, but this song comes to life much better here (KK even stated in an interview that the original album's production should have come out much better in the mix, but that it was screwed up in the process). 'DD/D' sounds especially sharp (MAN that scream of Halford's had to scare the pants off of ANYONE back then, since there was nothing like it!)

However, the 'Take On The World', 'Evening Star', 'Living After Midnight', and 'United' performances are a huge disappointment since it just shows the band standing there and lip-synching to the original studio tracks (sorry guys, not letting that one slip by!). But the 'Rocka Rolla' and 'DD/D' songs make up for them.

So, if you are any sort of Priest fan who grew up in the early days of MTV or are a big enough new fan that just wants to check out what Priest was like in their prime, then Electric Eye should already be in your possession, no questions asked.

ROCK HARD RIDE FREE!! (wait, that song isn't on here!)

4 out of 5 stars Best choice for first Priest buy.......2005-11-04

It is preposterous that all the other "best of"'s and "anthologies" floating around of Priest do not have "Green Manalishi" or "Hell Bent for Leather". These ARE here in the "Priest Live" section (but not on the CD of the same name!);the inclusion of these songs, plus the videos that brought them MTV fame, make this the best choice if you can only own one Priest recording.

This installment of the Classic Albums series, in which rock stars talk about the creation of their albums, focuses on the making of British Steel, the 1980 album by Judas Priest, a working-class British, heavy-metal band led by screechy lead singer Rob Halford. As Halford (who has since left the band) and his mates explain what went into the lyrics and recording of the songs that made up the record, the talking heads are intercut with performance footage of a band that helped launch the metal and speed-metal surge of the 1980s and early 1990s. The interviews are not particularly insightful if you're not a fan and are probably redundant if you are; it's fascinating, however, to watch the way the band's studded-leather image evolved over the years. --Marshall Fine

Description

Had Judas Priest released just this one album, it would still go down in history. Judas Priest was one of the most influential heavy metal bands of the 70's.

BRITISH STEEL made them a world-famous band.

The welding of BRITISH STEEL is told in this exclusive program in the band's own words, and by their once long-term producer Tom Allom. Featuring archive footage, interviews and rare live performances, plus all of BRITISH STEEL'S finest songs, including "Living After Midnight", "Breaking the Law", "Metal Gods", "The Rage", "United" and "Grinder", this is a compelling, witty and exhilarating look at the making of one of heavy metal's most artful creations, a true Classic Album.

Watch, listen and kneel to the Metal Gods!

5 out of 5 stars great bio of British Steel.......2005-11-14

All band membors give all their secrets about one of the greatest heavy mnetal albums ever made "British Steel" very interesting stories, and interviews from the band, lots of cool clips, and a few videos and a rare 1991 performance of Grinder, a great buy!

2 out of 5 stars British Steel.......2005-08-19

OK if you are a die hard Priest fan. All the dialog is a bit boring. It moves a little too slow for me. The music was good though.

4 out of 5 stars Love Judas Priest but a few things..........2004-12-19

I feel I have to ask this, how many freaken interviews are they going to do about British Steel/Point of Entry with parts of old videos, saddly some from Fule for Life not saying Fule for Life wasnt good, it was great, however if I wanted to see Fule for Life Id freaken Watch Fule For Life but appareantly they assume your to stupid to notice and may miss it so they RE-add many clips from Fule for Life because they assume you dont have Fule for Life...

See a pattern?

What kills Me is they obviously have some vintage material that is extreamly old and in great condition, viewing and sound wise, yet they show you like 10 seconds then ... go back to an interview :)

I wish Judas Priest would stop going over kill with interviews and just release there vintage material, Im talking even back to Sad Wings as about 10 seconds of Tyrant was played... then cuts OFF!?!?!?! but... saved by what else? an interview :)

Priest needs to know their PAYING fans dont want interviews that take longer to hear then the length of creation of Priests existance on this earth, but I do give it 4 stars, because they were kind enough to grace the PAYING viewers with a whopping 10 seconds of a vintage classic :)

*try to*... Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars The inside story of the world-shattering metal classic........2004-02-15

Yet another entry in the enjoyable Classic Albums series, the episode documenting the making of Judas Priest's classic 1980 album was one of the few that didn't get screened on NZ TV (ditto the Iron Maiden, Deep Purple & Tincannica ones).
If you purchase this expecting all nine album cuts played in their entirety; then your're going to be disappointed. What you get here is a brief history of the the band which won't be cover any new ground for people who've seen the "Metal Works" video. The DVD features interviews with Messrs Halford, Tipton, Downing and Hill; along with then-producer Tom Allom & Scott Travis taking over from the drummer from that period Dave Holland (who as we all know, has been in the news recently for all the wrong- and quite sickening- reasons).
The DVD features the amusing concept video for BREAKING THE LAW in which the band rob a bank with Glenn & K.K using their guitars as weapons, while Rob Halford does a warped variation on "The Twist" on the bank counter before bending some iron bars to steal some gold albums for BRITISH STEEL. Also included are the videos for LIVING AFTER MIDNIGHT & UNITED; as well as anecdotes and breakdowns of each song (the only cut that isn't really covered in much detail is YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE OLD TO BE WISE- my least favourite track on the album).
We get to see Glenn & KK demonstrating their guitar duelling in the studio, Ian talking about his bass intro for THE RAGE- one of very few he got to play (apart from LOVE BITES from 1984s "Defenders Of The Faith", BLOOD STAINED & BURN IN HELL both from 1997's "Jugulator". I could be wrong there. I probably am. Heck, I'm Vidiot, not Einstein) & Priest fans get to hear the infamous story about how "LIVING AFTER MIDNIGHT" was conceived for the millionth time.
I do have a one minor quibble: the DVD running time is posted as 110 minutes on the DVD slick, but the actual running time for the doco itself is a mere 50 minutes. Also unlike the Meat Loaf BAT OUT OF HELL & Fleetwood Mac RUMORS "Classic Album" DVDs there's no stories of sex & drugs excess- the closest we get to that is a tipsy Tipton laying down some of his solos in the studio after the band had come back from a few beers at the pub. (Been there, done that).
Extras include a discography and extended interviews, which run about half an hour, so we're still owed 20 minutes of material. Other than that, this is an entertaining look at the making of one of the most important hard rock/metal albums of the 80s. If you're a fan you'll want it in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Substance for Musicians.......2003-12-18

If only VH1 would get a clue and produce substantive documentaries like this that are actually about making music instead of celebrity-oriented fluff.

This is a retrospective documentary about the making of the British Steel album. Glenn, KK, Rob and Ian are all interviewed about the making of this metal classic. There are interesting stories from producer Tom Allom about how some of the effects were generated, demonstrations of how Glenn and KK work together to get their trademark sound, examples of some songwriting devices, explanations by Rob of the ideas behind the lyrics, and some input from Ian Hill whose perspective is often overlooked even though he has been there from day one. Dave Holland, the drummer at that time, was not included. There is an interview with Scott Travis, the current drummer, in the extras.

This DVD is great for musicians and serious fans who are interested in what goes on during a recording session and the creative process. You may be disappointed if you are looking for celebrity rock star soap opera. But there is always VH1 for that.

2 out of 5 stars Mish Mash.......2007-05-01

I had high hopes for this movie, as I have often wondered that if I lived in a contemporary time with Jesus, would I have believed Him? However, this movie was pretty terrible. It quoted a lot of Scripture, which was pretty accurate, but it lacked direction and just seemed weird. The cover of the DVD was misleading also, showing "Jesus" in blue jeans with helicopters hovering about in front of a city skyline. The whole movie looks like it was filmed in the 1980s and takes place in a Cape-Cod type setting. I ended up forwarding through most of it, watching the miracles and then the crucifixion. The end was weird too, with no showing of the Resurrection, etc. I'm just glad this was a bargain bin purchase...

2 out of 5 stars The filmmakers' hearts were in the right place (I think), but that's about all that's right with this movie.......2006-10-08

"What was that?" That was the question I couldn't help asking myself after watching this film. I liked the premise of trying to portray the events of Jesus' life in a modern setting because I thought that it might make Jesus' sacrifice for us more understandable and relevant to younger audiences (His sacrifice obviously has been, is, and will be relevant to all generations, but a majority of today's youth seem to have little understanding for anything that doesn't have to do with the 'here and now'). Unfortunately, this film failed in almost every respect.

If I hadn't read the movie description first, then I might only have had a vague notion that this was a retelling of Jesus' life until the time of Jesse's betrayal and execution. Part of me wants to watch the film again to see if I can pick up more of the contemporized events of Jesus' life, but a greater part of me says that I shouldn't waste my time by watching this again, because it certainly won't be the effective evangelistic tool that I (and probably the filmmakers) thought it could be.

It's a low-budget film and the acting is poor, as previous reviewers have already stated. These would be acceptable shortcomings if the story weren't so muddled. The unacceptable shortcomings are that there is little here that truly tells people what Jesus did and that what is contained in the movie is almost incomprehensible (and uninterestingly presented).

It's unfortunate that most Christian filmmakers have to cope with low budgets (which means no A-list actors most of the time), but a story can still be interestingly and effectively presented ("Flywheel" is an excellent example of a low-budget Christian movie with less-than-stellar acting but a great, evangelistic story). If you want a "What might have happened if Jesus had come to earth in our time?" movie, then watch "Joshua." It's hardly a perfect film either, but it is a far better film than this one and, at the very least, it's comprehensible.

5 out of 5 stars See it for yourself and judge it.......2006-09-27

After reading the review I expected a really bad movie and it was not.I really enjoyed it.Sure it could have been better but then it would have been much longer to include everything about Jesus's life.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting concept that should have been so much better.......2006-02-10

The acting in this film was stiff, as other reviewers have noted. Peter seldom spoke, and seemed befuddled, rather than like the hothead Scriptures describe him as. John the beloved had a rather silly smile, and said even less. Judas was the most interesting character, and perhaps offered the best acting of the cast. Another clumsy aspect was the mixture of modern setting and verbage with some cagey, King-Jamish sounding lines. Jesse's modernized gospel occasionally took on a psychobabble character, such as when he said that it's not just life, but the quality of life that matters

The tempo was somewhat disjointed. It would meander, then rush, then plod. Thus, what should have been an interesting story, sometimes became laborious to watch.

Finally, the plot-line was decent, though uneven. It roughly followed the New Testament accounts, but of necessity, only hit some highlights.

Bottom-line: The Judas Project was a great idea that was rather poorly executed. I note that both Amazon and another site I frequent for rentals, only gave this movie an overall two-stars. This time, the crowd was quite accurate. Two stars for a movie that did not waste my time, but did not entertain or deeply engage me, either.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better Christian films out there (and they're not many,,,).......2006-01-18

This film isn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be. I remember when this came to theatres, and people were kneeling down in the movie theatre and accepting Christ. Something with that much power has to be a good thing. Yes, some of the acting is horrible, and we could ALL do without those songs, but it's a good film with a great message! It certainly is better than any of the Left Behind films. Now those are horrible.

As far as the special effects go, they're not that bad. I think Industrial Light and Magic helped with those. The music score isn't bad, and the direction by James Barden isn't bad either. Once again, I could've done without those corny songs that he wrote for the film - he even sang them - *shiver*. It's just a modern day re-telling of the story of Christ. Some people may be offended by that - I don't know why, but they have been. In closing, this isn't a perfect film, but it's not a horrible one, either. Give it a try!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Story of Judas and Jesus for Modern Time.......2007-01-11

The film JUDAS has a well-written screenplay by Tom Fontana which weaves together the theme of Judas (Johnathon Schaech)as the voice of power and violence and Jesus (Jonathon Scarfe)of love and peace. The pacifist side of Jesus is often scorned in our day and many people are not ready to believe in a humble Jesus. It is unlikely in Biblical times that Judas could speak to a person of the high priest status, but such a talk would seem reasonable today. This is a story that fits our colloquial English and modern sensibilities.

The gospels don't fully explain why Judas betrays Jesus, so the imaginative tale of Judas' mother who needs a funeral, fills the gap. The music underscores the power of God in scenes such as, when Jesus pays a poor man's taxes and then asks Mathew, the tax collector, to follow Him. Background information is explained by the expanded role of Pilate's wife. Why Judas had to identify Jesus, was imagined to be because the centurion, named Flavius, could not identify Him because he had been arrested for refusing to capture Jesus. The film makes parts of the Bible come alive as for example, when the disciples gained the ability to go two-by-two to heal. This is often omitted from stories about Jesus because it is difficult to dramatize. Using low tech camera tricks instead of computer graphics, made the healing seem more real to me. Judas suggestion that the disciples pay for their ministry by highway robbery, adds poignancy to Jesus in the garden saying "Did you come with swords to capture me, as though I were a common thief?"

I found this story to be very inspiring. I hope it will be shown again on TV. It would be a good story for churches to show to their teenagers who strive to be like Jesus.

The M+G+R Foundation

1 out of 5 stars It makes Martin Scorsese's THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, look like a trip to Sunday school.......2005-10-21

In all the uproar surrounding THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, ABC Television decided it might behoove them to try to cash in. So they created a little film named JUDAS. A film so vapid, a film so offensive, a film so pointless and contrived. It makes Martin Scorsese's THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, look like a trip to Sunday school.

Judas (Johnathon Schaech, That Thing You Do!) is a guy with vision. He sees the chief priests giving money to the Romans. These Romans crucified his father and Judas believes that it is time for the Jews in Jeruasalem to revolt. He believes that the one way to revolution is to find the Messiah. When he tags along with Jesus and his disciples, his life drastically changes.

Let's be honest, the Bible is rough to touch, with so many Catholic and Protestants ready to scream bloody murder if you muck it up. Writer Tom Fontana took it upon himself to do something interesting. He throws the biblical story out thw window and makes it all up. In the process he turns Jesus into a pansy, Pilate into a monster, and Judas into an idiot. Hey, wait a second, this is the movie the ADL wanted Mel Gibson to make.

This film makes Jesus admit He is wrong about His outrage in the temple, something that was justifible. You also watch as the story points are constantly taken out of context so that their original meaning is distorted. The gospels are pretty straightforward but it feels like the people involved think that extra meaning needs to be placed on events thus muddying any meaning at all. Your are left with a film that could have been called THE BUDDY CHRIST AND HIS PAL JUDAS and you mostly try to figure out why the priests and Romans want to get Jesus anyway.

Even with all the theological problems with the story, you may ask, does it work as a movie? NO. JUDAS does not make any sense. For instance, you watch Pontius Pilate plotting with the chief priests, only to make their lives more difficult by changing his mind and then washing his hands of it all. You watch as Judas betrays Jesus, not because he is a greedy guy, but because his mother died and he could not bring her back to life. Yes, you heard it here first. Writer Tom Fontana has stolen plot ideas from STAR WARS EPISODE II.

The other problem is that the last 20 minutes don't even involve the main character. Judas just sort of stands there, looks around, and then just hangs himself. Why does he hang himself. It seems like he's bored not upset.

The acting is okay and even the settings are fine. But this is a movie has a plot in overdrive. It makes logical leaps and breaks the most important rule of screenwriting. Show us the action. Do not tell us what is happening. Most of the major events in the film are not shown, they are discussed. We miss the beheading of John the Baptist, the Via Dolorosa, the scourging, and various miracles. But the characters like to talk endlessly about them.

On top of that, the film tries its damnedest to tell the story without offending anybody. The problem is you tell a Bible story out of context, especially one about Jesus, you wind up ticking off your intended audience. This film not only will offend its audience, but anyone else watching it will laugh. I found myself laughing a lot. The movie is that bad.

Please do not waste your time with JUDAS. It is not worth your time. If you have not already seen THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, why not see that instead? Why not rent JESUS OF NAZARETH, or even JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR? JUDAS is a waste of a fine evening.

1/2* (Out of 5)

2 out of 5 stars Awful acting!!.......2005-03-15

I found this film to be of a poor quality. The acting, particually that of Jesus was embarrasing and the plotline could have been more biblical and intriguing. I was very disapointed. Jesus was portrayed a bit too effeminately for my liking.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting point of reference.......2004-12-18

I liked this made-for-TV picture. It humanizes Judas by showing what might have motivated him. The fact that Jesus is not the central figure in the story as presented actually allows the actor portraying him to loosen up compared to other actors in the role. (That's what I liked about Jeremy Sisto in the 2000 miniseries "Jesus".)

3 out of 5 stars When Bad Noir Happens To Good Actors--A Delightfully Demented Bit Of Fun .......2006-11-09

I'm going to say it right from the beginning-- I absolutely loved this bit of overheated Southern noir. I'm not going to pretend that it is a particularly good movie, but as trashy fun--it hit all the right notes. And all of the things that others have listed as the film's shortcomings are positively endearing. It is delightfully bad in a very great way. Why? It's got to be traced to the screenplay. The ludicrous banter between the cops is priceless, they reference sex and Jim Thompson in equal measures--as if talking about hard boiled noir will make this picture more legitimate. And the dialogue between the kidnappers is so cliche ridden, so colorful, so out of left field. Believable? Not a bit--but super entertaining in an off-kilter way.

In "Judas Kiss," a quartet of impossibly attractive kidnappers stage an elaborate plan to ransom off a software tycoon. As they are executing their plan, a woman stumbles upon them and must be murdered to prevent an eyewitness statement. This, as you might imagine, complicates the plan and all must deal with the implications. A couple of cops looking into this sordid mess are played by Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson. With charmingly bad accents, these great actors are a sight to behold. My favorite moment is provided by Thompson undercover in a knit cap on roller blades--trust me, she blends right in!

The kidnappers are all played by appealing and somewhat famous actors. Carla Gugino is ostensibly the lead character and narrator of our story. Smart and sexy, and usually better than her material, I often wonder why she's not a major star. She is hysterical here is full blown sex kitten mode. Simon Baker provides the requisite beefcake action as her often shirtless boyfriend. Gil Bellows is cool and calculating, while Til Sweiger is the "crazy" comedic muscle character. It's all a lot of fun.

In a bizarre effort to sex up the proceedings, we get some nice wacko moments. Two times, a sci-fi porno is being watched by characters within the film. These cheesy, nudity filled sequences add nothing to the story and a sane person would have to question why they are included at all. We also get the romantic backstory, told in flashback, of two of the kidnappers. Absolutely unnecessary and grinding the action to a halt, it is still a major hoot. How else would we get to see Gugino spanked by a violin and receiving oral sex while dangling from a meat hook in a supermarket freezer. Genius!

I'd probably give this about 4 1/2 stars because I love it in a deranged way--but I'll let it slide with a 3. I don't want to oversell it's actual merit. Try it if you're in the mood for a bit of ridiculousness. KGHarris, 11/06.

3 out of 5 stars Oh, the ACCENTS!!!!!.......2006-06-14

I'm gonna start and say I did enjoy the movie, but Alan & Emma seriously could've used a good dialect coach. I'm from New Orleans, the majority of us do not talk like that! Alan's never been good at playing American accents, there's always a hint of his British that pokes through, but he did give a solid performance.

3 out of 5 stars A Must for Rickman and Thompson fans!!.......2006-04-01

I initially watched this film because of my favorite actor Alan Rickman. And while I enjoyed his performance here(as well as Emma Thompson's), I felt the movie wasn't all that great. I didn't get really interested in the plot until halfway through the movie. The only scenes I enjoyed were the ones with Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson, it was a really interesting choice having two well loved and well respected British actors play these parts, and if you can get past the accents,(Alan did a better job than Emma, but that is because he has "the voice") which at times was hard to understand, they did an awesome job with these roles.
The story revolves around a group of kidnappers led by Carla Gugino. They kidnap a computer genius (played by Greg Wise-real life husband of Emma Thompson), but then turns into murder when Carla's character murders the Senator's wife. There is a government conspiracy which Det. David Friedman(Alan Rickman) tries to uncover. Emma plays the FBI agent Sadie Hawkins.
I wouldn't recommend this film unless you are a fan of Alan Rickman or Emma Thompson, or if you are a big fan of film noir.

3 out of 5 stars Fun and enjoyable film noir.......2005-11-19

"Judas Kiss" is one of those movies that is both a tribute to and a send up of the film noir genre. Think "3000 Miles to Graceland" only not as tightly plotted. The ensemble cast is great and the whole "are they going to get away with it?" plotline is well done although I feel that some of the clues should have been shown to the audience earlier in the film rather than towards the end. Everyone in the cast does a good job, but I would agree that Carla Gugino gives a stand out performance with good support from Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson as the cops. Rickman, looking like an unmade bed, plays the world-weary, but ultimately honest Det. Friedman. Thompson is sassy and fun as the tough and unconventional F.B.I. agent, Sadie Hawkins. I would describe the overall look of the film as "jazzy"--slick and sharp while being sensual as well. If you enjoy film noir as much as I do, definitely pick up a copy of this film. I can only hope that they will be bringing in out on DVD soon.

2 out of 5 stars Better the 2nd time around with judicious use of the FF.......2005-10-20

I came to this film with the attitude of enjoying a bit of ridiculous 'camp'. Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman sporting Nawlins accents? I couldn't pass that up. Well, even with the right attitude coming in, it was at times painful. Emma's dialect coach should have been shot; Alan did better, at least he sounded like he was aiming at a southern accent, but he tends to drawl a bit anyhow so maybe it was easier for him. However, Emma and Alan are only supporting characters. The main characters are not terrible or anything, but really not that compelling.

Oh, the plot. The film does have a good plot, and it could have been interesting, but nonetheless I found it a bit plodding. And as others, have noted, the editting is so weak it's comical. Oh actually there is a quite memorable scene: the cunnilingus scene in a meat locker. Wow, that was...um...unusual.

Well, Emma and Alan fans will no doubt watch it, but save it for a slow mid-week night. Actually, any Emma fans with a sense of humor should definitely watch this at some point. Emma is obviously having a good time, and seeing her dangle a cigarette while tailing on roller blades is something else. It's just that you might not want to choose this as a film to watch with friends, unless you want to expose the depths to which you will descend to watch Emma or Alan on the screen.

Addendum: Alan plays a good character here. It's a nice lite break if you've been working through his films where he often plays morally ambiguous (or not so ambiguous) characters in films that explore difficult themes.

Touring to support their 2001 album Demolition, Judas Priest blow the roof off London's Brixton Academy during a 90-minute performance showing off their current lead singer, Ripper Owens (original vocalist Rob Halford left in 1992 to pursue a solo career). The rest of the band remains intact--the dual guitar attack of Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing, and the powerful rhythm section of bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis--but the soul of Priest is the leather-lunged Owens, who leads the quintet through an inspired set, mixing tunes off Demolition and Jugulator (the 1997 album that introduced Owens) with classics like "Breaking the Law," "Living After Midnight," and the finale, "Hell Bent for Leather." Also included are a 20-minute featurette, "Demolition Time," featuring band-member interviews, and 25 minutes of sound-check footage, including versions of songs not part of the actual concert, "The Sentinel" and "Lost & Found." --Kevin Filipski

Description

This is the one and only, or rather the ultimate DVD from the metal gods themselves! It was recorded at the legendary Brixton Academy show in London in December 2001. The live show track listing features quite a few songs that haven't been played live for quite a while including Turbo Lover and Desert Plains. On top of that, the DVD features tons of behind-the-scenes material, rare footage, interviews, soundcheck footage, and lots more!

4 out of 5 stars WHY CUT SONGS?.......2006-11-29

This is a pretty good DVD but 7 songs were cut. 6 of those songs were on their '98 live CD. If you must have a copy of Ripper singing Highway then you'll have to get the CD version of this which is the complete show. The set list could've been a little better but if you want a live document of the Ripper era this does the trick.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.This rocks.......2006-05-01

I am a fan of many types of rock, from classic to punk, to metal. This is the first live dvd i have ever bought of a band, but being a fan of priest i felt i had to get it.Their performance is great as is the quality of the whole video. Owens does a great job on vocals in my opinion, belting out the lyrics i would say as well as halford(I am also a fan of Owens in Iced Earth). The selection of songs is really good too, spanning from the early days up until before Demolition.I really wished Devil's Child was on here though!i love that song.o well.great dvd.pick it up.you won't be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars COOOOOOOOOOOOL!.......2006-04-06

This is a good Judus Priest dvd! I think it's important to have both dvds with the two singers. It's a raw in your face dvd. And I like that. But, riseing in the east is more of a spectal to behold!

4 out of 5 stars Where is Halford?.......2005-12-05

I still love Owens a lot. I saw him on stage with Iced Earth and this guy is so amazing. There is so much endurance in his voice.

That DVD is excellent. Everything is just in place. It's just something that is missing on the stage...

Owens has a too loud heavy voice I think. It is slightly more violent and rough than Halford and it kills a bit the spirit of the songs. But overall the band plays every song the right way.

That DVD is a must for a fan. At least for a fan which accepts that Halford isn't there.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Stuff..........2005-10-14

This one is cool, one of the best concert I have seen. Owens screamed like a banshee. Several songs, like Blood stained, were sang even higher than the studio tracks, which was seldom done by any vocalists performing live. The sound is great and the performance is magnificent, have been playing it countless of times for the last 3 years and still find it fascinating. I like it even better than the "Priest...Live" concert. This is a must-have DVD as there might not be another Priest concert with Owens due to the return of the Metal god Rob Halford.

Description

Why all the fascination about the Gospel of Judas? Who were the Gnostics and why did the early church reject their views? What was the secret enlightenment that the Gnostics claimed? How is it the Gnostics seem to just keep coming back?

The recent discovery of a mystical text buried for centuries beneath the sands of Egypt and a major television documentary about that find cast new light on the ancient heresy of Gnosticism. The text is known as "The Gospel of Judas."

It claims:
* Judas Iscariot was not the traitor recorded in the canonical Gospels, but was a spiritual hero, Christ's favorite disciple.
* Cain was fulfilling the will of God by killing his brother Abel.
* An evil and malicious God has created the world and all physical things.
* Jesus used his divine powers to hurt or destroy those who angered him.
* Christ and Jesus were two separate beings.
* Spiritual truths are concealed as secrets given only to the enlightened.

This five-part video series provides an enlightening Bible-based journey to uncover the truth behind the supposed "secrets" of Gnosticism. Through interviews with leading historians and scholars and the testimonies of the Gospel writers and the early Church Fathers, we examine how Gnostic beliefs originated, their influence on the Church, and their popularity and resurgence today.

This DVD also includes questions for small groups and is an excellent source for Bible study and historical research.

3 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2007-02-20

This DVD is not bad, if your a Christian, looking for backup to show why Gnosticism was inappropriate. But if you are looking for open, unbiased information on the Judas Gospel and other Gnostic Texts, buy the National Geographic society's DVD instead. I also question the scholars used in the video. Only one of them was familiar. Why didn't the makers of the DVD contact Dr. Elaine Pagels or Dr. Bart Ehrman for interviews, or even Dr. Marvin Meyer? These are the top people in the field. I really feel that I wasted my money on this DVD and a will NOT use it for my lectures and classes on Gnosticism
