Great Movie.......2007-07-05

I watched this in the Theater and it was a great movie to watch. Lots of Action and lots of gore. The HD DVD version of this movie will have lots of nice EXTRAS that the Blu-Ray version won't, because as a lot of people don't know, Blu-Ray is not even FINALIZED yet and all the Extra JAVA features that are needed aren't currently supported and won't ever be on current Blu-Ray players other then the PS3. Which is also why other movies have been delayed for Blu-Ray while they wait until October 2007 for the format to be Complete since it was Actually Rushed out into the marketplace in basically BETA format. Movies like Batman Begins and The Matrix are a couple examples. Others they just leave out the extras on the Blu-Ray version and release just the movie on Blu-Ray, which is what's being done with "300"

The Extra $4 for the HD DVD version over Blu-Ray is not for the extra content, but for being a COMBO disc which includes a DVD version also. This allows you to play the movie in your DVD players also!!! Very Reasonable price for that.

I just have to laugh at the Blu-Ray sucker fanboys that must be huge DRM (Digital Rights Managment) fans since it has Double that garbage and far more control to do things such as to disable your Blu-Ray player if they think it's been compromised. All thanks to BD+. Which hasn't been used YET, Let alone buy a format that's not even finshed yet, just so you can spend a bunch more money to buy another Blu-Ray player a little later. Advertising features the system just doesn't support yet. There are still features that will be Optional also even after it's been Finalized in October. I won't get into it here, but Visit a good Audio/Video Forum and learn more!!! If you really just have to have Blu-Ray, unless you like throwing money away, WAIT until the new Blu-Ray players finally get released that support the final Specs. Which is however long after October if nothing goes wrong.

Anyway this is a must buy HD Movie!

P.S. Watched Transformers today, MUST SEE, it was great.

The HD DVD disc is awesome.......2007-07-05

With standard definition and HD definition on the other side, I can play it on my Toshiba HD DVD player and the kids can play it on their regular player. It's a win-win and an awesome movie to boot. This combo disc is the one to get, I can play it anywhere.

300 is awesome.......2007-07-04

This movie was awesome. Some of the computer generated war scenes are very clear on HD DVD. Combined with the fantastic action sequences and phenomenal acting this film is a great title to add to your HD DVD collection. Please be sure to note that this disc will allow for picture to picture with running commentary with the director. That is something that is an exclusive feature on the HD DVD format.

Great Movie, and this disc is a combo.......2007-07-04

There isn't a lot of love for combos, but I like them. During the transition to HD most of us will have several DVD players, but maybe only one HD DVD player. That and very few (if any!) of our buddies have HD. So this disc you can pack up and watch it over at your best friends house on his 27 inch CRT TV that he bought for $1200 in 1990.

The movie is worth the cost of this disc. Even for the over 30 crowd.

Dont be fooled - the HD version DOES NOT WORK in your DVD player........2007-07-04

Too many people got screwed by buying the HD DVD version of Planet Earth only to find it didn't work in HD on their DVD player.

Only buy this if you have a special HD DVD player by Toshiba or an Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on.

Amazon needs a much bigger warning about this format as once you've opened it they won't take it back. Having the letters DVD in the title obviously confuses a lot of consumers.

This Blu-ray version of "300" is not only the cheapest way to get 300 in high definition, but also has a lossless uncompressed PCM 5.1 track in addition to a Dolby TrueHD lossless track.
For those of you who want the best audio and video on your main picture, this is the best choice.

Don't let people sway your opinion with their ignorant comments about HD DVD or Blu-Ray. Buy the format that you prefer and be happy with it.

I have both Blu-Ray and HD DVD and find that they are exactly equal in picture quality. In cases like "300," and a few other titles, the HD DVD has more features or unique features, but that doesn't matter to many people. If you read the specifications for the disc and find that you really believe that the extra features make one format or the other more attractive, then you should go with that disc.

The HD DVD version of "300" has some sort of blue screen, no CGI, feature or something... I won't be watching that at any time, as I just don't care about it. For me it just comes down to price. I will buy whichever format has the movie I want at the best price. The Blu-Ray version is $4 cheaper than the HD DVD version right now... if the extra features on the HD DVD are worth $4 or more, buy the HD DVD version. If the extra features on the HD DVD version are not worth $4, buy the Blu-Ray disc.

THE PICTURE AND SOUND SHOULD BE IDENTICAL. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE SHOULD BE THE EXTRAS.

If you only have a player for one format, be happy with that format and leave the other alone. All of you on BOTH sides of this bashing stuff are acting like little children who want to be big bullies and I find it ridiculous. I refuse to pick a side, as I benefit from BOTH sides and purchase contents for BOTH formats.

There are two formats and it is going to stay that way. Universal players will be released soon enough and those of you who don't have players will be able to buy a single player to play all content. That is the solution to this ridiculous bickering; co-existence.

The only way to buy this excellent movie is on BLU-RAY disc-Best picture and Best sound, and the HD format of the now and future. There are many superb BLU-RAY players by Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic, Samsung, Denon check them out. Only Toshiba makes hd-dvd and that are all inferior and troublsome-Be Wise go BLU for HD Video-You will love it.

Screenwriter William Goldman's novel The Princess Bride earned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the clichés being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story.

And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. A top-notch fairy tale!.......2007-07-03

I first saw this movie well over a decade ago. I thought it was OK, but could only remember a few snippets of it. A friend of mine @ work often talked about it and raved about what a fun movie it was. So, finally, I picked it up and gave it another look.

What I found was that my friend was right: it IS a fun movie. These days, it is also very nostalgic as well (as most 1980s movies are for me). I have a greater appreciation of the love story as well. Now that I'm pushing 40, I have a fuller understanding of just how elusive the "fairy tale ending" really is.

The cast is superb, featuring Cary Elwes as the dashing hero. He has the look and the physical grace to easily pull off the shy young farmhand who transforms into a confident, debonair swashbuckler. Robin Wright Penn is a natural to play the princess; beautiful, a wee bit on the high-maintenance side but with a heart-of-gold beneath it all.

The DVD also includes a bit part by Billy Crystal. Although you'd never recognize him, all of his fans will instantly know him due to his distinctive high-pitched voice and the way he moves. We also get to see the late-great Andre the Giant. Although I've never been into pro wrestling, I'm well-aware of how beloved he was while he was alive. He was a gentle giant, and this film brings out his warm personality.

This is a family-friendly fairy tale. There is mild violence, but it is more cartoon-like than anything else. There is a scene of torture, but it is so absurd as to not cause any children nightmares. If fairy-tale movies represent a genre that you enjoy, then this one is a must-have! Also, people who like this flick are also sure to enjoy SERENDIPITY with Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack. I saw "Princess Bride" in the theatres nearly 20 years ago and lines like that still stick with me. This film version of William Goldman's wonderful novel is one of the best fantasy films around and is a great stock film for families and fantasy lovers as well. We've viewed our copy at least once every 2-3 years since the film came out and doubt we'll really ever tire of it.

The Princess Bride became one of my favorite movies when a friend showed it to me at his home.I use this movie as a feel better remedy after a bad day or just to feel good.I love the wry humour as well as the sheer sarcasm that drips from every castle rampart.I recommend this to anyone needing a break from reality.Carey Elwes is Gorgous as Is Robin Wright in her first movie role.Billy Crystal and Carol Kane as Miracle Max and Valerie are brilliant as is the quiet gentleness of the late Andre the Giant as Fessizk and How could I Forget Mady Patinkin as Indigo Montoya "You Killed My father.Prepare to DIE!"

In only his 3rd time behind the camera, director Rob Reiner brings Academy Award winning screenwriter William Goldman's "The Princess Bride" to the silver screen, with Goldman himself writing the script. With excellent performances by Cary Elwes, Mandy Pantinkin, Wallace Shawn, Andre The Giant (In pace requiscat), Chris Sarandon and Christopher Guest, special appearances by Peter Falk, Carol Kane, Billy Crystal, Fred Savage Peter Cook and Mel Smith and starring Robin Wright as The Princess Bride, this classic fairy tale never disappoints for all of its 98 minutes (it never feels that long; then again, I was so busy enjoying the movie that I didn't notice the length of the film). I haven't viewed the special features yet, but they promise to be as good as the movie itself.
I recommend this movie to every female out there. You will love it and have your significant others saying "As you wish" to your every word.

The film could pass for a Disney movie, as MGM rarely produces anything this clean in this day and age (virtually no swearing, sex or nudity). A movie the entire family (and especially young couples) can enjoy together.

If I were to remake this film (theoretically speaking, of course), I would take out the bits where the Grandson interrupts the Grandfather every time Buttercup and Westley kiss. Those bits are some of the best.

The film is crammed with memorable lines, from Westley's signature saying
"As you wish" to Inigo's "My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to die." Watch the movie and, I promise you, you will love it.

Rated PG for comic violence.

How do you know that a movie is good? When you watch it over 1o times and get the same feeling as you did when you first watched it. This is definately thrilling ,none other like this. Mel Gibson is at his best in this movie.

Twelve years and this film still holds up remarkably well. Mel Gibson, in my humble opinion, is a wonderful filmmaker. I remember being blown away in the theatre at what he was able to pull off. Seems the Mad Max films taught Gibson well. There are definite paralles to Wallace and Max. The fight for freedom is always a good fight and despite the gory end, Wallace was truely victorious. Highly recommended.

Braveheart is obviously a great movie, evidenced by the reviews you can read here.

As I watched it with my son last week, I was struck by the role that faith plays in the story. In the opening scenes, Longshanks is described as a pagan king. Several characters pray and engage in other solemn religious rituals. Steven the Irish even has conversations with the Almighty, and believes he was sent by Him to protect Wallace. And Wallace believes that too. Before Wallace's torture, he prays that God will allow him to die well. His prayer is answered.

I reflected that this has been a theme in several projects that Gibson has been associated with. Patriot, We Were Soldiers, Signs, The Passion of the Christ.

I like most of the movies I've seen Mel in. This one is no exception.

This movie is phenominal. The story, music, and cinematography are all amazing. If you love medeival times, this is a great pick. It is gorry, but it represents war in that day very well.

Schwarzeneggers Terminator debut is the best one in my
opinion but the technic isnt that good escpecially in
the last scenes animation of the robot ist done quit
simple for its time ok but today truely bad.
as for the imagequality forget about that fast.

Blu Ray is no magician but it is defenetly the best version when it comes to clear pictures
but no comparison to a new movie thats filmed with HD equipment.

Great Movie, but this is not the Special Edition DVD........2007-06-23

Don't be fooled, I have been looking everywhere for the Real Special Edition DVD.

The first DVD was a barebones Disc that was non-anamorphic. Then in 2001 MGM released the Special Edition with the following features.

- Other Voices Documentry.
- Terminator: a retrospective fetturette.
- Deleted Scenes with optional Commentary
- Theatrical trailers and TV spots.
- DVD-ROM features.

The DVD that Amazon is selling is only includes one trailer and some DVD-ROM stuff. I can't find the Special Edition DVD anywhere. Also, there are three Reagon 2 releases, a Special Editon, a Definitive Edition, and an Ultimate Edition! Why aren't there any Reagon 1 Ultimate Editions, all we have is a barebones Disc with no good extras. Someone tell me where I can find the Reagon 1 Special Edition DVD.

Man plus Machine equals Schwarzenegger!.......2007-06-16

Entertainment Weekly recently touted the first sequel ("Terminator 2: Judgment Day") to this film as being one of The Twenty-Five Best Action Films of all time. That title may be an accurate assessment of the non-stop action of the sequel but what would it have been without its predecessor which ranks as one of the best science fiction commentaries on the path that we may be going with our computer-dependent society.

James Cameron scored a casting coup when he gave the role to Arnold. At the time, the muscle-bound actor had had a few films under his belt, films that played mostly on his physical appearance and his novice acting skills. "The Terminator" character was short on dialogue but Cameron made the best of his star by providing him with one-line zingers and stares that could wake the dead.

To call the part "tailor-made" for Schwarzenegger would be a major understatement. He was muy perfecto.

Linda Hamilton, not yet the household name that she would become for TV's "Beauty and the Beast," as well as not yet the future "Mrs. James Cameron," is appropriately confused and terrified as the waitress that would ultimately become the mother of the man that would rescue humanity.

Michael Biehn is well-cast as the other traveler from the future, intent on preventing Arnold's malevolent cyborg from doing his killing-thing.

Stan Winston's effects still hold their own after almost a quarter of a century.

Great movie.......2007-06-07

Great movie, pretty impressive FX for it's time. The Blu-ray version suffers a little due to this movie's old master. It's no where near being Pirates of the Carabean clear (Probably the best Blu-ray video quality so far).

There are some extras, one which show the making of the FX, which is a plus.

But for 19 dollars, it's a no brainer. Get Blu-Ray version if you don't already own DVD version.

The Terminator.......2007-05-27

Lots of action from beginning to end. If you love an action film, this is for you!

I think this early 90's classic speaks for itself. If you love great action movies or were a fan of the Boz this movie is for you. Fast moving great action all the time some cheezy lines but what do you expect it's a B movie with your basic biker plot. I personally have been waiting for this to come to region one as the non region dvd's it was available on were recorded very crappy.

As for the dvd itself I think it is very good for what it is. List price on most major outlet sites is $[...] and if you are spending $[...] that isn't bad for this product. It is important to remember that Stone Group Pictures Company originally put out this movie and went out of business shortly there after. This movie was shot in 1:33:1 and was bought out by Columbia pictures who is the company who brought it to HBO and let the movie be played for quite a few years through the early to late 90's. Although the movie was put out in a limited amount of theaters it's the main purpose Stone Group had was to sell it to cable TV so that is why it was shot in 1:33. Now the movie has changed hands again as MGM is behind the dvd. I agree with the other guy on here who complained about the widescreen version. It is crap a bunch of the picture is cut out but that is the best they could do to make it widescreen and these days that is all people want. To take a 1:33 image and reduce it to 1:85 or even worse in some cases as bad as 235:1 it kills the picture. You have to watch for this stuff if you are a widescreen buf. Usually it will say on the back of the DVD that it is "matted widescreen" which means they took a bigger image and reduced it to make it widescreen because the negative they had was not compatiable to be made into a true widescreen as is the case in this B movie flick. Anyway for those of you who love this movie set you widescreen TV to 4:3 mode put the dvd on the fullscreen side and sit back and enjoy the show. I did and enjoyed the movie for the first time in a long time because my VHS was shot and a region free dvd I bought of it looked worse than did that of my overwatched sometimes flickering VHS. I am glad this flick has finally been put out in our region.

Deceiving product info for a great action flick........2007-06-15

OK, this is a review of the DVD. I've already reviewed this fantastic biker flick elsewhere on this site and you fans deserve to know what you are paying for so read this before you rush out and buy this crappy DVD release.

First of all, the DVD clearly states that is presents a Widescreeen and Fullscreen version. But then if you look further into the specs listed, it also says the DVD is being presented in 1:33:1 which is a sneaky way of saying 4:3 or as we most understand that to be.....FULLSCREEN!

This DVD is a flipper, and on the unmarked side you get what appears to be a fullscreen presentation. Now, flip it over to the side that is actually marked "Widescreen" and you will get NOT a widescreen version, but a fullscreen version that has been cropped at the top and the bottom so as to give the false appearance of being widescreen. But as you watch, you will notice that key images in certain scenes are only 1/2 visible. It became obvious when I got the tape measure out to confirm what I already suspected....cropped top and bottom. Shame shame shame.

The sound gets no props either. Again the specs tell you that this is a Dolby Surround audio, but it doesn't sound like it. All the sound is to the front, and mostly directed to the center channel. My impression is that this is basically a "stereo" mixing that does nothing to enhance the action. The sound you hear in the surround speakers is just residual noise, not much else. You'll have to listen to this one at full volume for effect.

On the plus side, the DVD transfer is very crisp and clean. The images are sharp, and the colors are very deep. I'm shocked actually at the clarity of detail for such a lousy DVD treatment, but the video looks great. Nothing else in the package, no extras, no liner notes, no bios, nada. So there you go, buy this DVD because you love the movie, but don't buy it expecting to be blown away by it cause you likely wont be unless you're seeing it for the first time. 5 stars for the movie minus one pitiful star for this DVD.

Inane biker flick.......2007-06-15

Bad acting, overused storyline-Brian Bosworth plays a cop who infiltrates a sadistic biker gang to bring them to justice. Senseless to the point of annoying.

I got this for my kids b/c they have not seen it. It's been in the vault for a long time so when it came out I snatched it up. Although done in the Disney style of watered down story, it's good for young kids to get an idea of good vs. evil and not be scared. It also gives them a bit of history b/c this takes place in the past.

When I was a kid, I had the original VHS release of Robin Hood and I must've watched dozens of times. Sure we had all the other ones but for some reason, I re-watched this movie more than any others. Watching it recently, I still find myself completely engrossed and it's probably one of the more effortlessly fun movies Disney had done. Over the years, the film's reception got mixed with people saying they preferred the staying power of Bambi and Cinderella but I find this one of my favorites movies the House has done.

Prince John took over the throne when his brother, King Richard left to fight the Crusades. Taxing everyone in the country, Robin Hood decides to step in and take his money and give it to the poor. Robin has his buddy Little John, church member Friar Tuck and the love of Maid Marian to help him while Prince John has his companion Sir Hiss and the Sheriff of Nottingham and their hopes that they will capture Robin.

One thing I found noticeable was just how great the characters were even if they got little to no development. While the main guy's of course Robin Hood, you find yourself amused by Prince John and Hiss just as much while having the strangest soft spot for characters like the church mice couple or the little rabbit kids. Some of the dialogue at times doesn't seem like traditional kids fare either and it helps make the film a bit more accessible since it's not so eye-rollingly cheesy that you wish your kids popped in a different movie. Songs, provided by Roger Miller of "King of the Road" fame does a couple of great songs including the solemn-but-not-depressing Not in Nottingham as well as provides the voice of Alan-a-Dale, the rooster who narrates even when he's in the scene.

When it comes down to Disney's DVD releases you sometimes notice a trend: the Platinum Editions, big restorations with plenty of special features to the simple Special Editions such as Pocahontas or Mulan which are pretty big as far as features but not as prestigious. Then we have stuff like this DVD. While the transfer and clean-up is pretty surprising, considering how ugly VHS was, the special features are unbelievably light. No one could've done a commentary or at least some kind of making-of? This was the first Disney film done without Walt Disney input since he passed away so we could've had someone mention that. But oh well.

This is no Snow White so don't even think it is. But instead this is probably one of the most underrated films they've done.

Great combat movie........2007-07-01

I've heard it said that combat is long periods of boredom, punctuated by moments of sheer terror. Well, this movie has it in spades.

From what I know of WWII history, this movie is accurate. Beyond that, you spend hours in the confined quarters of desperate men making the best they can of a bad situation.

Naturally, the movie ends on a down note.

Gripping epic of war at sea.......2007-06-28

This is the model for films about war at sea. The direction and photography are expert: there are very few scenes that look like model work, and you have no trouble believing you are on board the U-boat under the most perilous of conditions. I did think some of the depth charge explosions were too close to be survivable, but I'll accept that as arising from the film's need to get explosions and submarine into the same frame. The crew show a believable and gripping range of characteristics and emotions, including courage, desperation, and ingenuity. These men believe in their country but have little time for ideology. They have a bond that holds them together under the worst of circumstances, and the first-rate acting makes that very real. The ending brings home the cost and futility of war.

I only wish some of these long-winded reviewers would stop trying to be Roger Ebert.

Film is terrific. Must see. Fine writing/direction. Walfgang Petersen is another A-list director, no doubt about it.
The only quibble is this: film is on the looong side. Saw the original version in a theatre way back when it came out--and it was just about right. This version, though, just might leave your poor backside aching after a while.

Definitely worth getting. Might be the BEST submarine film ever made.

THE KING OF ALL SUBMARINE EPICS!!!.......2007-06-03

This is the type of movie that you watch when you are really longing for a submarine movie. This is a well-made and very realistic epic of a real life German U-boat in WW II Be prepared to spend the whole day watching because it is very long but very worthwhile. It is a must see!

Good but theatrics distracts from realism in spots........2007-06-02

The 3.5 hours watching it did not feel long to me, and it was a generally enjoyable production. There was apparently considerable effort at accuracy and realism in portraying the way things were on a U-boot. But, there were some things that distracted me from the realism.

The English subtitles are often not a translation of the German but a representation of what the translator assumed a typical, modern day American would say. It wasn't a big distraction for me, but I think I would have preferred a more literal translation.

A bigger distraction for me was seeing all attempts at realism abandoned to show the U-boat magically surviving depth charges. I kept wondering if this U-boat was made of Star Trek tritanium material.

The biggest disappointment was the ending. I can understand wanting to end with something dramatic, but this was such an obvious gratuitous cheap shot out of left field trying to evoke an emotional response that it impressed me as an insult to reasonable intelligence rather than a dramatic twist. One can look up the history of the U-96.

Ultimate and Extreme DVD's the way to go.......2007-06-28

This is the second movie from James Cameron that I consider to be among the best science fiction films ever. Sequels rarely stack up to their predecessor, but this film actually outdoes the original Terminator, which is saying a lot considering how good the original was. Terminator 2 has everything you need to make an excellent sci-fi including a fantastic premise, very strong well-rounded character development, groundbreaking special effects, and the kind of story that would make Rod Serling proud. If there is ever a sci-fi movie that gives you all the best the genre has to give this is it.

One of the big deals about this movie is that it's the one that introduces to the world CG animation that actually seems to interact with a live environment as well as the morphing technique unique to computer animation. While Terminator 2 wasn't the first to do it (The Abyss gets the credit for all that... another Jim Cameron film) they do get the credit for popularizing it. Practically everybody uses computer animations with live action in one form or another today. Even over a decade later the CG effects still measure up and even outdo stuff that's still being created today.

On top of the new CG stuff you get plenty of other tried and true special effects that will knock your socks off. The action in this movie is relentless at times and will be sure impress any testosterone junkie out there. There is a lot of exciting gunplay in this movie that includes some killer military hardware too like the awesome 1500 rounds per minute minigun action reminiscent of Predator. Eye candy for those with a short attention span? Check.

If Terminator 2 only had a neato special effects and action it wouldn't be as great as it is. Everything else must work as well. The story in Terminator 2 is deep with the main characters evolving as events happen around them. Even the Terminator robot gets to get some character development. While it's cool to see the action and explosions and stuff what makes the movie really fill out is the fact it delves into several different levels of the human condition. You also get a ton of background details too like who was involved with building Skynet and even a scene with the futuristic battle that John Conner grows up to lead. The theoretical twists in the plot are enough to get the thinkers debating over time paradoxes and stuff like that. Deep and involving storyline for those who prefer quality over pizzazz? Check.

The Terminator robots are as awesome as ever. Not only do you get to see the classic style cyborg bad boy like in the last movie but you also get to see a completely different concept in killer robot technology with the T-1000. The future scene has even more robot coolness to offer, though it's just a little more than what I saw in the last movie (but still sweet!).

The acting is superb as well, which is surprising considering Edward Furlong has absolutely no previous experience in acting. Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton play off each other well. Robert Patrick gives a stunning and eerie performance as the T-1000. The soundtrack takes the original Terminator themes and puts them to new heights. The music truly enhances the movie here.

If the original movie wasn't enough Cameron decided to make an extended cut with almost 20 minutes of new footage. I wouldn't necessarily say the new footage opens up brand new territory for the movie, but I will say the extra scenes do add some extra depth to some of the scenes. A couple of the new scenes flesh out young John Conner's character a little, which is always a good thing. I wouldn't say any incredibly cool scenes were added though there is one with the Terminator that is kinda cool, but the good stuff in that scene has more to do with fleshing out some character development with the humans than cool cyborg tricks. Speaking of cyborg tricks you get the added bonus of seeing a Terminator try to smile. Funny, funny stuff! While I can't say the extended edition is better than the original I will say it does give you more background on the story, and thats always good if you're into that.

With the exception to blu-ray fans there are only two DVD editions you should consider (the rest don't have any special features). The Ultimate Edition and the Extreme Edition. Essentially what you have is a trade off between the two. Neither edition have the same special features. The Extreme edition improved the picture quality slightly while the Ultimate edition has DTS. Here is a breakdown:

Ultimate Edition: You get three versions of the movie. The theatrical release, the director's cut and an extended director's cut via an easter egg (EDC basically includes the deleted scenes). You get three in depth documentaries including one on the Universal Studios 3-D ride. Commentaries from the crew (no James Cameron). Also included are several smaller featurettes covering all aspects of production, tons of storyboards, a 30 page hard cover booklet insert and the screenplay. Not to mention THX certified test signal package for fine tuning your audio set up, Dolby 5.1, Dolby 2.0 and DTS 5.1 for all the audio freaks out there.

Extreme Edition: Two versions of the movie with the director's cut being on the disk and the theatrical trailer as a DVDRom movie (via Windows Media Player... although you can see the theatrical version on the DVD via an easter egg). An audio commentary from director James Cameron and screenwriter William Wisher, very comprehensive text commentaries with over 90 minutes of branching video footage, a 24 minute documentary and a 12 page hard copy booklet insert.

If you have no version of T2 on DVD I would recommend the Ultimate Edition since it has the most features. Although the Extreme Edition is still worthy for its James Cameron commentary track and the excellent text commentary. Since the extras are completely different between the two this might not be a bad double dip if you get them at the current low prices. The blu-ray version has only the theatrical version (no director's cut), but includes the commentaries from BOTH the Ultimate and Extreme editions. I say wait for a better high definition release.

If you haven't seen this movie I strongly recommend it. VERY strongly. You action fans will get plenty of mayhem for your pleasure. You content fans will get rich and full storylines with character drama. You sci-fi purists will get the kind of story you would expect to be reading from someone like Phillip K. Dick. This is required viewing for any sci-fi fan. Nuff said.

HD version without DD5.1.......2007-06-19

I bought the DVD in order to watch the Hi-Def version. I already have the older version of the movie, and I've seen it many times over the years. I have an HP laptop running Windows Vista, hooked up to my 50" Panasonic HDTV (1280x720), with the VGA connection. I loaded the disk, and it prompted me to install the InterActual player. Vista warned me that the program has issues with the new operating system. I went ahead, and installed it anyway, then immediately downloaded the newest version from the Internet. It then told me that I needed a DVD decoder that I could buy on their web page. I ignored that message, and went on to play the HD version of the movie. It played OK, after some initial stuttering during the first few screens.

The picture quality was very good, but the audio was not Dolby Digital 5.1, meaning that there is no surround sound. I followed up on the InterActual web page, and they confirmed this. Apparently, Microsoft used some other audio encoding. So, even though the picture quality is better, I chose to watch the lower definition, extended edition in order to get the DD5.1 sound. I find the sound quality is at least as important as the video quality.

The standard definition image is still very good. The nVidia chip set in my laptop does a nice job of upscaling. The 5.1 sound is spectacular as ever. The added minutes in the extended edition don't really add much, but the novelty effect is nice anyway. All in all, I'd say that it is worth the price at under $10.00.

Owes just as much to "Aliens" as it does its predecessor.......2007-06-17

It's no surprise that the editors of "Entertainment Weekly" would choose both "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "Aliens" as two of its 25 Best Action Films of all time. Both are sequels that significantly up the special effects ante, along with the body count, and both feature two of the movies most dynamic kick-[...] heroines, Sarah Conner (Linda Hamilton" in the former and Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) in the latter.

Besides doubling the action of the first, "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" also doubles the cyborg quotient by returning Arnold Schwarzenegger in the role that he was born to play (this time as a "good" cyborg) and bringing in a more than equal combatant/foe in the from of the Robert Patrick as an "upgraded" model. The movie adds an element of surprise in the form of the much smaller (and less developed) Patrick as a superior model to Arnold's character, able to best the strongman in many a scene.

The movie also brings back Earl Boen in an expanded role as the befuddled "Dr. Silberman." He brings needed comic relief in a film that is short on words but long on action sequences.

James Cameron may have felt on "top of the world" a decade later with his Oscar-winning "Titanic" but it is for the first two "Terminator" films that he probably made his greatest cinematic impact.

High Def does not work in Vista.......2007-06-08

The movie is great, great package with lots of good features. However the WMP video could not be played at all. Some may experience this and some may not. You will to install the Interactual player to view the WMHD version.

Let's Shed Some Light.......2007-05-27

i love this film being a big film buff and all but also i've noticed that the price is fantastic and is even more cheaper in certain stores, anyway when i bought the dvd and popped it in the dvd player i was amazed with the picture pure high def 1080p i mean i baught this movie for 5.50 and it's in high definition, the blu-ray version is like 20 or 25 bucks so i'm wonderin why make a whole nother disc-format and just make standard dvd's in high def i mean perhaps u can't fit any special features but why not just make them double sided dvd's and put the special features on the other side instead of movie companies using 2 discs and waste money. i believe this will prevail and end the war against blu-ray vs. hd-dvd and just keep blank blu-ray discs for information purposes. I mean i love blu-ray and i want one so bad but u gotta pay up the nose just to get one, at least players are becoming more and more affordable but i dont want to have to convert all my 700 dvds to high def formats. it's interesting how Artisan backed this movie and now it doesnt exist anymore as soon as the high def battle started, Lionsgate is now mastering all thier old movies and they back up blu-ray 100%, it just makes you think what coinsidences emerged with all this, terminator 2 on standard dvd is in high def (for us in the US anyway) it cost me 5.50 its just a big mystery to me...

The Disney touch is all over this grand, colorful version of the Johann Wyss adventure of a European family set off for the new world of New Guinea. The film opens on a ship jostled and torn by a raging storm while a family struggles to make it through alive. Tossed into a reef near a deserted tropical island, father John Mills takes charge and the family soon turns their island prison into a veritable paradise. Their multilevel tree house, built in record time, is complete with running water and a working pipe organ scavenged from the ship, while their grand yard is abloom in English roses. As a tale of hardship and pioneer pluck, the tale is pure fantasy, but as entertainment it's energetic and appealing. The island is impossibly populated by ostriches, zebras, lions, and elephants, a private zoo that delights the youngest boy and offers plenty of comic relief. The two older brothers discover even wilder life when they rescue the prisoner of oriental pirates (led by hard-bitten Sessue Hayakawa). There's little real danger anywhere in the film--even the climactic battle with the pirates is a cartoonish affair, with coconut bombs and nonlethal booby traps, until the final desperate, deadly moments. Hardly a faithful adaptation of the novel, but a lush, beautifully photographed film and an entertaining adventure safe for all ages. Dorothy McGuire costars as the proper, worry-prone mother. Knew I could find.......2007-06-04

My son loved the movie Swiss Family Robinson when he was little. I have looked for it previously in stores but could not find. I knew we could find it on Amazon. I have told my grandchildren about the movie and the adventures the family has on an island. I got this movie for my son for Father's day so he can share it with his children. The movie is funny, adventurous, and shows so much ingenuity when the family needs shelter. It is a good family movie all will enjoy.

One Of Our Family's Favorite Classic Stories.......2007-05-11

This DVD contains Disney's adaptation of the original book, Der Schweizerische Robinson, written by author Johann David Wyss, in 1812. It is one of the finer works of Disney, in my opinion. The story of this family's struggles and determination, difficulties and joys is good watching (and good reading) for every member of the family. One of the most delightful aspects of this work is the emphasis placed upon good character, family values, and self-reliance. I recommend this movie to everyone...

You can't go wrong here! My siblings and I LOVED this movie as kids. I bought it for my son and daughter when they were younger and again, they LOVED it and watched it (and quoted it) repeatedly. I am now buying it for my young (7ish) nephews to enjoy. Probably my favorite no-cartoon Disney flick of all time!

Excellent Family Movie.......2007-04-03

This is an excellent movie. I am so glad I purchased it for my son. I got it for his birthday 7 and at first he didnt really have an interest in watching it, but he was home from school sick one day and we watched it and I couldnt tear him away. He loved it! Its adventure, imagination, and fun all rolled into one.
