Jessica Lange deserves three cheers for her performance as an army wife in the early 1960s. Sensuous and unpredictable, Lange bridles at the restrictions in her life and is constantly seeking attention. Tommy Lee Jones is the nuclear engineer who adores her, but is just as passionate toward his career. Lange and Jones sizzle in spite of a weak plot tangent concerning the military cover-up of nuclear testing in the Nevada desert. The love story is everything as it bursts with undercurrents of passion, regret, sorrow, and joy. Lange's sexy, high-strung performance earned her an Oscar. It was director Tony Richardson's last film. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Description

Cmdr. Frank "Spig" Wead was a pioneer aviator, renowned screenwriter (whose works included John Ford's They Were Expendable) and a man of war. The skies beckoned Spig to action; a crippling injury ultimately left him powerless to act, propelling him to discover the power of his pen. He was talented, driven, flawed, a friend of Ford and the subject of this compassionate biography. John Wayne plays Spig and Ford directs The Wings of Eagles, which also offers a fascinating glimpse into the ways and world of Ford: Ward Bond plays moviemaker John Dodge, a role modelled on Ford. Maureen O'Hara, Wayne's five-time co-star (including Ford's The Quiet Man), and Dan Dailey (of Ford's 1952 What Price Glory?) play Spig's indomitable wife Min and cigar-chomping sidekick "Jughead" Carson.

5 out of 5 stars Depends a lot on age.......2007-06-02

What can I say, standard teletubbies fair. If your child has seen a Teletubbies video anywhere before you probably know the reaction: they either love it or show no interest.

This one our Son (1 year old) went bananas over and we had to buy it. He loves the sunny face, the Teletubbies sequences. He loses a bit of interest in the live action sequences and tends to play with other toys, but when the Tubbies come back on he is captivated.

The DVD represents good value as it runs for a long time (I think it is multiple TV shows all run together) without breaks. It's good to put on for a 10 minute distraction or for an hour plus of absolute silence from the little one. High production values, good music, high quality all round.

5 out of 5 stars Blue, Blue, Blue Sky Blue.......2007-05-25

What is it that makes Teletubbies so compelling for children? Our son is now 14 months old and has been captivated by Teletubbies (or Tetetare as he calls them) since the very first time we played this DVD several months ago. I expect they will still work for him for years to come. This particular selection of Teletubbies adventures and vignettes of children having fun seems to be the most compelling of the Teletubbies DVDs, and it can delight him, distract him or calm him down like nothing else - and I mean NOTHING else. Apart from the baby language used by the Teletubbies, the accents are mostly British, but in some places a US/Canadian voiceover has been added, presumably where the British accent or language would be unfamiliar to a US audience - no French or Spanish language options sadly.

Teletubbies are broadcast on PBS if you want to check out an episode. The beauty of the DVD is you can play it whenever need arises.

5 out of 5 stars My son's favorite.......2006-07-14

My son loves teletubbies and we have eight other videos. But this one absolutely my son's favorite. He is 10.5 months old and he sings blue sky song with Po. :) It is worth the money we spend on this video because first time he sings a song :) Teletubbies - Blue Sky: Fantastic Friends and Springtime Surprises is number one in our house.

Take The Full Monty, add a sharper emotional edge, and replace the strutting strippers with a dignified British band. That's the essence of Brassed Off, a bittersweet gem released in 1996, a year before its more popular (and Oscar-nominated) counterpart. In the Yorkshire town of Grimley, there has always been a coal mine, just as for the last 111 years there has been a brass band, and it seems that Danny (the wondrous Pete Postlethwaite) has been the director for every one of those years. Tory economic policies, however, are closing coal mines around the country in favor of nuclear power, and Grimley appears to be next on the list. Danny is unfazed by the threat, claiming, "It's music that matters." But some of the men are about to quit the band until the appearance of Gloria (Tara Fitzgerald at her most radiant), who dazzles the all-male group (including old flame Andy, played by Ewan McGregor) first with her beauty, then with her flügelhorn playing. The new member gives the band a boost as they continue to perform and compete, but closure remains very real, as director Mark Herman (Little Voice) accompanies the band's performances (played with gusto by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band) with scenes of angry labor-management confrontations and family strife. In this context, some of the characters claim that the music is an irresponsible form of escapism. It becomes clear, however, from a touching performance of "Danny Boy" to the stirring conclusion at Royal Albert Hall, that music is an expression of the human spirit, a bit of beauty and sanity in a harsh world. With defiance, the band can play "Land of Hope and Glory," even when the land offers them neither. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Brassed Off: History of Britain through musical eyes.......2007-06-27

Another masterpiece. I was on the edge of my seat viewing this movie. I have viewed this five times since! It confirmed what I knew of the brass band movement in the UK and it prepared me for my trip last year to the British Brass Band Championship in London England last year. Strangely, the band protrayed in the movie under a different name was the 2006 winner! A must see for all music lovers who are into brass music. You learn about the traditions that made the brass band movement in the UK a unique experience for its audience and participants.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful film.......2007-05-29

The packaging for Brassed Off! gives the impression that it's a romantic comedy, but though it does have both romance and comedy, it's really more about a group of coal miners who play in a local brass band. It is rather in the same spirit as The Full Monty and Calendar Girls.

In the story, the band members are trying to prepare for a performance at a major band competition, at the same time as they are facing the impending closure of the coal mine, the loss of their jobs, the disintegration of their families and the destruction of their community. In other words, a pretty serious film with a lot of sadness to it, though ending on a fairly upbeat note -- and very well done.

Other than the two young romantic leads (Ewan MacGregor & Tara Fitzgerald), Pete Postlethwaite was the only other actor I had ever seen or heard of before -- and I had previously felt a very strong aversion to him, after seeing him in the role of a horribly sadistic villain in one of the Sharpe films. So up till now I had avoided movies in which he appeared, but I will avoid him no more, because he was terrific -- totally believable, totally sympathetic -- and I loved the speech he gave at the end.

The rest of the cast were also wonderful -- they all just looked and seemed like real, ordinary people.

I also must say that I never cared much for the William Tell Overture (or for brass bands, for that matter) but this band's rendition of it was amazing -- it practically had me jumping up and down with excitement. According to the credits, the music was played by an actual colliery band, which made the performance even more amazing!

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A great little movie!.......2007-04-10

The English have done it again. A great little movie where you get so envolved with the characters and their music. Simple story of going outside of ourselves and the mundane. I agree the packaging of this movie is awful but I suppose it attracts buyers just by the cover.

This is not just an English story. We all are experiencing the layoffs everyday of our lives no matter where we live.

Uplifting story of teamwork and devotion.

4 out of 5 stars 'Shafted'!.......2006-07-08

This movie, along with a masterful cast, truly deserves five stars! Yet it was nearly awarded a mere 3. Why?
The storyline and the acting are superb. The production is excellent and the camera-work first rate. Even the coarse - but truthfully and accurately portrayed - language, is acceptable to this reviewer, although it might not be to everyone.
So, what was it that so nearly caused this movie to be classed as 'poor' entertainment? It was the strident, over powering, political haranguement the viewer was subjected to throughout the movie. Rarely does a political argument become relevant for long. Time changes all things - including political thought and actions. What was highly relevent in the 80's is, now, utterly irrelevant. This movie was set in the troublesome times of the 80's in Industrial England - in particular, a mining area.
If the viewer can view the movie as a movie and enjoy the craftsmanship that went into it from all concerned, it is a most enjoyable experience. If, however, one allows one's politics to interfere - then the movie becomes an annoyance.
Take heart, however, the politics espoused were not those of the reviewer. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the overall great product that was 'Brassed Off'!

5 out of 5 stars Great movie, Bad Packaging........2006-04-06

This is one of those movies that they felt had to be dressed up a bit in order for the dumb movie audience to give it a chance. Or so this is how they film studios see it anyway. This is certainly a message movie, and its not so sutble message about anti-Thatcherism hits you on the head like a brick! Americans ignorant about Britain today might have a hard time following it. However, if one disregards the rather dated politics here, the theme of the movie can be seen as a universal one in that long-time workers are now frequently the victims of changing economics.

More than anything else this is a movie about music and brass bands. The opening march by R. B. Hall "Death or Glory" says it all! For the players in this band their fight for the mine is a death or glory proposition. Incidently Hall was a little known New England composer of marches, and its interesting that his music should make it back acorss the pond for English brass bands. My personal tastes runs for Military bands in which the instrumentation is richer and more varied. Brass bands don't have any woodwinds! The softer tone they produce is a more mellow sound, compared to the richer, stirring military band.

Its nice to see that the working class of the mines in England produced these high quality bands. No comparison can be fond here in the States with mine workers. You would sooner find most US blue collar workers in topless bars after their shift rather than going to band practice! So these bands are a part of England's cultural scene, and the popular band music they played was often a bridge for the common man between the classical concert hall and the out-door band concert. Their loss would certainly be sad. The band portrayed here in the film is an actual famous brass band, and it would be interesting to know if it was really disbanded because of the Yorkshire mine closings.

The actors do a fine job. Pete Postlewaite is wonderful. Anything he does seems to be golden. Tara Fitsgerald is very appealing and seductive. Shes's also wonderful to see in almost anything. The plot has its usual twists and turns that keeps the interest. The human dramas behind the music is what is most compelling about this film.

A movie should be made about the many fine regimental bands that have been disbanded in the British army in recent years. Like the civilian band portrayed here, many of these bands had histories that went back for centuries, and their loss to the regiments which had them was keen. The many fine musicians in them were also forced into redundancy or had to seek non-musical employment in the army. Certainly what Blair has done here is every bit as bad as what Thatcher did to the mines. The destruction of these many fine military bands was a loss to communities as well as to the morale of their regiments. The loss of any band is a cultural loss, whether civilian or military. With young listeners today increasingly having no exposure to music other than dreadful pop, the loss of such bands is truly a dire situation. These musical entities with their free open air concerts were a vital link for people to hear different kinds of music. I can't imagine what the music tastes of people will be in the future. For sure it won't be that good.

This is deffinitely a fine movie, with good plot, strong acting, and some wonderful brass music. If viewers become inspired to listen to this kind of music as a result of this film then all should not be in vain. Strongly recommeded despite the silly box cover!

5 out of 5 stars Blue Sky.......2007-02-22

A delightful kick off your shoes and curl up in a comfortable chair film! No convoluted plots, no whodunnit, just plain wonderful relaxing movie of love and marriage of a serviceman and a seemingly brainless ditzy wife who steps up to the plate when all she loves is almost lost.

2 out of 5 stars floozy & boozy jessica gets her golden boy.......2006-12-05

jessica lange won an oscar for this, proof positive that some years are so bereft of strong performances, they HAVE to give it to somebody. apart from that, this is a silly exercise in anti-government paranoia, with a wasted tommy lee jones and not much else.

3 out of 5 stars Unconditional love.......2006-09-17

Jessica Lange's character is a glamourous mentally fragile woman living a fantasy of what she had hoped her life would be. Tommy Lee Jones'character plays her faithful husband and is so obviously passionately in love with her with no conditions. With divorce on the uprise, it is a story of "for better or worse, richer or poorer". He shows her unconditional love that I am sure would be inconceivable for most men or women. The children, although greatly affected by her antics also remain faithful to her and the family. I gave it a 3-star rating only because time is so precious that we do have to pick and choose what we spend time doing or watching, but the moral of the story I would give a 5-star rating.

4 out of 5 stars Blue Sky.......2006-07-08

This is a terrific movie regarding military life in the '60s. Jessica Lange truly deserved her Oscar and Tommy Lee is excellent and of course Powers Booth shows his narily side which he protrays so well in so many movies. I can't even tell you how many times I have seen this movie and I will watch it again and again.

John Ford had a big emotional investment in The Wings of Eagles, and his favorite star John Wayne rewarded the director with one of his strongest performances. The subject is Frank "Spig" Wead, Naval aviation legend turned Hollywood screenwriter, who had written Ford's very good 1932 movie Air Mail and his magnificent WWII elegy They Were Expendable (1945). On the latter, Ford made the extraordinary gesture of putting Wead's screenplay credit on the same main-title panel as his own.

Ford was fond of exploring the theme of "victory in defeat." Wead's life was made to order for that. The hell-raising flyboy shenanigans, and his flailing marriage to a scrappy Irish redhead (The Quiet Man's Maureen O'Hara reporting for duty), were abruptly curtailed by a fall that left him with severe spinal damage. He should never have been able to walk again, but he fought his way back to limited mobility and built a new career as a writer. And when WWII broke out, Wead talked his way into uniform once more and made a key contribution to the Pacific air war.

It would be satisfying to report that The Wings of Eagles is a triumph--that the broad comedy of the early reels cuts brilliantly against the raw pain of the Weads' marriage, the grief of a family broken and mended and broken again, the film's specters of death and deep frustration. There are powerful moments--especially the complex, scalding scene of the newly injured Spig dismissing Min (O'Hara) from his life. But the low comedy is very low, the visual style sometimes stark but more often just drab, and the screenplay is very choppy about the passage of time. Ford-Wayne pal Ward Bond turns up as a crusty movie director with a walking stick full of booze, an office full of Western memorabilia, and the nudge-nudge moniker "John Dodge." --Richard T. Jameson

Description

Cmdr. Frank "Spig" Wead was a pioneer aviator, renowned screenwriter (whose works included John Ford's They Were Expendable) and a man of war. The skies beckoned Spig to action; a crippling injury ultimately left him powerless to act, propelling him to discover the power of his pen. He was talented, driven, flawed, a friend of Ford ? and the subject of this compassionate biography.

2 out of 5 stars John Wayne.......2007-03-24

This movie was all about the military character John Wayne was portraying. Not so much about airplanes. I was disappointed there were not more airplanes. It's all about Army vs. Navy, I did not relate to it too well.

4 out of 5 stars A sentimental movie where Ford gives a special warmth to a friend..........2007-01-17

Maureen O'Hara is teamed with a very inferior part in "The Wings of Eagles," a moving tribute based on a true story...

As Wayne's neglected, temperamental wife, she finds her dedicated husband frequently spending most of his time and energy on improving the status of Navy aviation...

On the night, Wayne is appointed skipper of a fighter squadron, he falls down a flight of stairs and suffers back injuries that render him a cripple...

Determined to fight his way back to some kind of independence, he persuades his wife to leave him and live her own life with their two daughters...

Nursed back to health by his sidekick (Dan Dailey--largely instrumental in motivating him in physical rehabilitation) he begins a new civilian career as a successful Hollywood writer...

Just when Wayne and Maureen, now a successful businesswoman, plan a reconciliation, news is broadcast of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor...

Maureen is last seen having another test of Irish temper as she heaves her half-packed suitcase across the room, frustrated that she again has lost her husband to the Navy...

Despite his handicap, Wayne is sent to the Pacific theater of war to supervise his revolutionary jeep-carrier tactical system...

The film is filled with humor: Wayne's plane landing in the swimming pool strike in the middle of the admiral's out-door tea party; the clubroom fight and cake throwing; the assorted cast members falling into the pool... It is also filled with deep drama and heartbreaking tragedy: the tender kiss of a wife deeply in love on the head of a man in pain; Wayne learning to walk again; the shipmates on deck in full military ceremony to say goodbye to a decorated flying ace...

Ford gives a special warmth to a friend, considered a national hero...

5 out of 5 stars Wings of Eagles DVD........2007-01-13

Recieved DVD as stated in a few days, would buy again.

3 out of 5 stars Hardly Watched Anymore...Wings Promises Much But Delivers Little.......2006-09-25

Wings of Eagles is a wildly and surprisingly uneven movie by a master of the craft who should have known better. John Ford sets exactly the wrong tone by larding the 1st part of the movie with false macho roughhousing and never quite recovers the plot. There are a few wonderful scenes. Wayne & O'Hara work perfectly together and the viewer gets the a very real sense of their failures as spouses and parents. Well meaning but weak and foolish people. As the movie portrays him, Spig Wead probably never should have gotten married and certainly never should have had kids. The Navy and flying were his true irreplacable loves. Wives and children should never have to compete with work for affection and attention. The hospital scenes are a bit cheesey but effective in their own way. Take out the macho tripe and give O'Hara's character more screentime and this movie becomes a five star classic up there with Grapes of Wrath, How Green was My Valley and The Quiet Man.

5 out of 5 stars The Wings of Eagles . . . John Wayne masterpiece........2006-08-24

Waited a long time to be able to watch John Wayne, in one of his best performances, at home in the comfort of my atmosphere. His performance is just as large on the small screen as on the Big Screen! His work with Maureen O'Hara is like watching Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers. They always seem to create a masterpiece of showmanship to include love, comedy, drama, suspense, and just plain entertainment for the viewer, all within a span of time that is usually too short lived. It is easy to want the plot to continue, but you have to realize a movie must end. Wayne's character, "Spig Weed", is so real, it's refreshing to see a TRUE STORY that is captivating. This movie will always remain very high on my list of "Got to See" movies!!

    Product Description

From DaVinci's wing sketches to the day hang gliding became an official sport in 1971, "The Flyingest Flying" offers a detailed evolution of this purest form of flight, as well as unique glimpses of the everyday people who pursue it. The film features rare interviews with such key figures as Francis Rogallo, the NACA (pre-NASA) engineer who designed the first flexible wing, to enhance his hobby of kite flying; John Dickenson, the Australian water skier who melded Rogallo's wing with the A-frame control bar still in use today; and fearless early promoters Bill Bennett and Bill Moyes, who barely survived their countless, creative attempts to introduce the fledgling sport to the world. Also featured are director Josh Criss' experiences at a hang gliding "flight park" in Manquin, Virginia, and the varied people who fly there. Along with the filmmaker's own journey from tentative student to soaring pilot, the film chronicles the struggles of another student, though multiple lessons, in her quest to solo at high altitude.

In the entire history of military aviation, there has never been an airplane that could match the P-47 Thunderbolt for ruggedness and dependability. The pilots who flew it into combat called it "The Unbreakable" and "the plane that can do no wrong." Learn more about this fascinating aircraft in this informative program.

4 out of 5 stars Good addition to your collection........2007-01-31

One of the things I liked about this film is that it gives a pretty good explanation of early development the P-47 and actually includes some footage of Seversky himself. The film does have some footage that I have not seen in my other titles however as you might assume there is footage used in this film that you will see in many other related films. There is one problem that I have with this film and that is that who ever produced or directed this film actually copied transcript from another film I own and used it for their own naration. I was pretty upset when I was hearing the narrator saying the same script I have in one of my other films. No originalty there! Anyhow It goes over the same MTO "Medeteranian Theater of Operations" Operation Strangle footage as seen in many other P-47 films and oh! by the way that is the part they copied. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Great DVD for aviation lovers.......2005-02-03

This "Rolling in the sky" 50 min. DVD shows the worldwide famous U.S. Navy flight demostration team, as you always wanted to. The footage is just great, so; you can enjoy some amazing shots of Blue Angels complete maneuvers, from different angles, several times. Zoom-in and zoom-out you'll watch jet rolls, loops and high speed air crossings, keeping their wing tips just a few feet apart. The entire DVD will be a "jewel" of your aviation collection, that's for sure. There's no narrative along the movie, only few live words of Team's leader officer, while all 6 pilots attend the briefing room, giving the movie a more realistic touch. I think music is a minor detail (that's why I gave just 4 stars), but; there's also some real fly-by jet noise, improving movie soundtrack. No doubt, this is the definitive Blue Angels flight demostration movie, showing no military or U.S. patriotic allegories, just the Blue Hornets flying high... Any aviation fan will enjoy this DVD, once and again.

4 out of 5 stars Blue Angels - Rolling in the Sky.......2004-06-13

Outstanding if you want to see the Blue Angels fly! I found this to be excellent for the shots of the arial manuevers etc. The DVD's music is dated but tasteful. No commentary. This is a plus if you don't care about background bla bla bla (other DVDs tend to be that way). Overall a very pleasing DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Sierra Hotel, Baby!.......2001-02-01

I felt like I was at a Blue Angel airshow! While there was no narrative, it was very easy to follow the action. Good, crisp shots of the FA18 Hornets doing their stuff! Will someone please do a similar DVD featuring the USAF Thunderbirds and their Lockheed Martin F16s?

1 out of 5 stars Worst DVD I've ever seen.......2000-10-17

This has to be one of the biggest disgraces of all time. First, you begin with one of the world's most exciting aerobatic teams. Then, you destroy any such excitement with synth techno music, discontinuous home-movie style shots, long scenes of grounded F-18s and the pilots walking to their planes.

    A complete waste of money.

4 out of 5 stars stirs the blood.......2000-06-16

after reading earlier reviews, i passed on this dvd at first. kept coming back to it though, hoping it was the same video i happened to see running in a store in the late 80's. it was, and here's why i think this video, for some people, is worth the price:

i mostly agree with the reviews below. there are lots of stationary shots and dead spots; at one point the crowd scenes at an airshow are ridiculously long; the music is pretty cheesy (i'll never understand why aviation vid producers don't figure out that aviation fans want to HEAR the planes too -- leave the music off except for short clips!); the overly long ground segment at the training center appears to have been shot with a cheap camcorder; and many of the sounds throughout the dvd are dropped in, even when they show a pilot climb into his hornet and fasten the harness.

    but...

this video has, without any doubt, some of the sweetest shots of any static aircraft, and THE BEST air-to-air and in-flight footage i've seen of the blues (all shot on film). i remember being struck on first viewing by how closely they fly to each other. it doesn't really sink in until you see one blue from the cockpit, belly, or wing of another. i was also surprised at the amount of relative movement within formation -- not due to sloppy flying, but slightly rough air.

though there's a small amount of grain in the picture (may have been shot on 16mm), the colors of the blues are very rich. i will be watching this dvd at least every few months, sometimes in slow motion, sometimes in fast forward, but always with admiration for the unmatched shots it contains. if you've ever tried to shoot the blue angels, you'll appreciate the skill of the camera ops on the ground; some of the tripod work is just nutso. one shot looks as though it used radar to track the jets.

those looking for a thrill every 30 seconds should pass on 'rolling in the sky'. but if you drool over turbine engines, precision aerobatics (with any flaws well revealed by the beautiful film quality and camera placement), and anything with a tailhook, you can't go wrong if you throw this dvd in prepared for the drawbacks. the reviews below kept me from being disappointed, and thanks to everybody who wrote one.

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

As a life-long pigeon fancier I must say that this five hour series is the most complete, most professional work I have ever seen on pigeons. The twenty chapters are exceptionally well told and the photography is wonderful. It makes me proud to be a pigeon fancier to see what a fine story is told here about the many, many facets of the pigeon hobby, including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's racing lofts, that are included here. This epic work is a must for any pigeon fancier but will also make a wonderful educational piece for schools & libraries.

I highly recommend this video and all the other pigeon videos that Mr. Jenner has produced. This is a must in any pigeon fancier's library. Children will find it fascinating and to discover a family hobby that all ages can enjoy.
