Martin Scorsese makes a welcome return to the mean streets (of Boston, in this case) with The Departed, hailed by many as Scorsese's best film since Casino. Since this crackling crime thriller is essentially a Scorsese-stamped remake of the acclaimed 2002 Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs, the film was intensely scrutinized by devoted critics and cinephiles, and while Scorsese's intense filmmaking and all-star cast deserve ample acclaim, The Departed is also worthy of serious re-assessment, especially with regard to what some attentive viewers described as sloppy craftsmanship (!), notably in terms of mismatched shots and jagged continuity. But no matter where you fall on the Scorsese appreciation scale, there's no denying that The Departed is a signature piece of work from one of America's finest directors, designed for maximum impact with a breathtaking series of twists, turns, and violent surprises. It's an intricate cat-and-mouse game, but this time the cat and mouse are both moles: Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is an ambitious cop on the rise, planted in the Boston police force by criminal kingpin Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a hot-tempered police cadet who's been artificially disgraced and then planted into Costello's crime operation as a seemingly trustworthy soldier. As the multilayered plot unfolds (courtesy of a scorching adaptation by Kingdom of Heaven screenwriter William Monahan), Costigan and Sullivan conduct a volatile search for each other (they're essentially looking for "themselves") while simultaneously wooing the psychiatrist (Vera Farmiga) assigned to treat their crime-driven anxieties.
Such convenient coincidences might sink a lesser film, but The Departed is so electrifying that you barely notice the plot-holes. And while Nicholson's profane swagger is too much "Jack" and not enough "Costello," he's still a joy to watch, especially in a film that's additionally energized by memorable (and frequently hilarious) supporting roles for Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg, and a host of other big-name performers. The Departed also makes clever and plot-dependent use of cell-phones, to the extent that it couldn't exist without them. Powered by Scorsese's trademark use of well-chosen soundtrack songs (from vintage rock to Puccini's operas), The Departed may not be perfect, but it's one helluva ride for moviegoers, proving popular enough to become the biggest box-office hit of Scorsese's commercially rocky career. --Jeff Shannon
On the DVD
Introduced by director Martin Scorsese, the nine deleted scenes from The Departed are all interesting to watch, though not a significant loss from the picture. The other bonus features are very good as well. "Stranger Than Fiction: The True Story of Whitey Bulger, Southie, and The Departed" is a 21-minute history of the real-life Boston gangster Jack Nicholson's character was based on. Scorsese, screenwriter William Monahan, and a number of journalists are among those interviewed. In "Crossing Criminal Cultures" (24 minutes), Scorsese and the cast discuss gangster pictures and specifically Scorsese's. Consider that a warm-up for Scorsese on Scorsese, an 86-minute documentary from 2004. (It's the only bonus feature not available on the HD DVD or Blu-ray versions.) There's no narrator or interviewer: it's just Scorsese talking about his upbringing and influences. There's a generous use of clips through The Aviator and even his American Express commercial. --David Horiuchi

Description
Rookie cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) grew up in crime. That makes him the perfect mole, the man on the inside of the mob run by boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). It's his job to win Costello's trust and help his detective handlers (Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen) bring Costello down. Meanwhile, SIU officer Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) has everyone's trust. No one suspects he's Costello's mole. How these covert lives cross, double-cross and collide is at the ferocious core of the widely acclaimed The Departed. Martin Scorsese directs, guiding a cast for the ages in a visceral tale of crime and consequences. This is searing, can't-look-away filmmaking: like staring into the eyes of a con - or a cop - with a gun.
Customer Reviews:
Good but not great.......2007-07-04
There are things I liked about Martin Scorcese's The Departed - it's grittiness, the tough, Irish Boston atmosphere, the dialogue, most of the performances (particularly Alec Baldwin, Ray Winstone, DiCaprio and MATT DAMON) and the plot which, despite some holes, is engaging. Having said all that, The Departed is good but far from great. Why? It's shallow, none of the characters have any real depth to them, it's flabby and bloated, Jack Nicholson is basically on over-the-top , one-dimensional cruise control, and the closing shot of the film with the rat is completely unnecessary and possibly one of the most clumsiest attempts at symbolism I've ever seen in a film. I also think the camera work was good, but wasn't up to par with Scorcese's previous work, and the quick editing bothered me after a while. I think the most disappointing thing about the Departed is that after you finish it you're entertained but at the same time you're left feeling that the film should and could easily be a lot better than it is. 3 1/2 stars out of five.
Good Film.......2007-07-01
The Departed was good. But it was not the "best film" (that goes to Babel). But the acting was good and it was a fun movie to watch. Very gory and the ending is something shocking, but I liked it overall
The Godfather Part 15.......2007-06-28
I love Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon and they both kicked butt in this movie, but haven't I seen this almost exact plot line before? I swear that the same idea's about the same gangster type deals are being recycled out in Hollywood. While this movie was fun to watch, the tired old "Godfather" act really losing it's touch. The original Godfather movies still hold up to today's crap, and even this is enjoyable, but PLEASE make some more unique films!!!
Follow the lines.......2007-06-27
This movie is great if you have about two hours to pay close attention. Compared to Goodfellas among other ganster movies it is a modern version. The cast is full of familiar faces and interesting swirls of how the individual characters connect. At the end your jaw will be in your lap!! You will not believe this ending! It's worth buying just to have in your collection, but even more so just to see the ending!!
Exploding Heads and Naughty Words; Otherwise, an Utter Bore.......2007-06-27
"The Departed" is garbage. I've seen more plot, and less bloodshed, in PETA slaughterhouse videos.
"The Departed"'s appeal is strictly to those who like watching heads explode on camera and think that if a movie uses every naughty word in the book -- in every line -- that makes it deep and profound. Anyone who swallowed "The Departed" needs to have his stomach pumped.
Good grief. Shakespeare, the Greek tragedies, classics like "The Third Man" would be lost on these people. As would a truly fine movie from 2006, "The Lives of Others", beside which "The Departed" looks, at best, amateurish and adolescent.
I want my money back. And I saw this movie for free.
I was so bored I started rearranging the groceries in my bag about ten minutes in. I looked at my watch at least half a dozen times. I thought up drinking games you could play every time Jack Nicholson utters the word *&^%.
Several characters are shot -- or dropped -- to death on camera. A man's eyes are poked out. One character is reduced to a drug dependent, quivering wreck. I didn't care.
I was amazed at how much I didn't care. I thought about why. I examined the desert emptiness of the script, other than for its resplendently brandished naughty words; reflected that the plot was so bankrupt it could be in chapter 11; I noted how absent characterization was, except to mete out how often each character said %$#^, or his posture when exploding a head.
I pondered gossip column narratives involving Alec Baldwin and remembered how cute Mark Wahlberg was in that Calvin Klein ad; I wondered if Leo were still dating the model.
An hour into the marathon that was this Guantanamo torture, I realized that I had been so pounded into boredom and apathy that the only thing that would have aroused me was if the entire oh-so-manly cast were, suddenly, to don black net hose and stilletoes, and sing the rest of their lines in Gilbert and Sullivan musical style.
I hoped against hope that Leslie Nielsen would appear and reveal the entire thing to be a very obscure farce whose humor would gel once Nielsen put it all into "Airplane"-esque perspective.
Was Martin Scorcese trying to prove his own manhood by creating a dystopic Disneyland in which every ride is manned by a cop or a mafioso exploding heads and blurting out swear words?
Scorcese insults manhood worse than Andrea Dworkin.
As for art? I guess Scorcese never heard the phrase, "less is more."
As it happens, I had just seen 1947's "The Third Man" the night before. "The Third Man" is black and white; its budget, compared to "The Departed"'s, was tiny. The cast, excepting Orson Welles, consisted of character actors or unknowns.
In "The Departed," Jack Nicholson, playing a Very Bad Man, toys with a severed human hand. What hits you is not the shock and awe the scene demands, but the pathos that the movie is so desperately needy for its audience to respond, and so without skill at provoking that response, that it resorts to the kind of gorey tricks a Halloween prankster would pull.
In "The Third Man," Orson Welles delivers "the cuckoo clock speech." All he does is talk -- and what he says chilled me and frightened me so thoroughly I'll never forget it.
Now *that's* a classic film.
"The Departed"? Garbage.

Description
Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg star in Martin Scorsese's new crime drama "The Departed." "The Departed" is set in South Boston where the state police force is waging an all-out war to take down the city's top organized crime ring. The key is to end the reign of powerful mob boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) from the inside. A young rookie, Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate Costello's mob. While Billy is working to gain Costello's trust, another young cop, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is among a handful of elite officers whose mission is to bring Costello down. But what his superiors don't know is that Colin is working for Costello, keeping the crime boss one step ahead of the police. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operation he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the gangsters and the police that they have a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin find themselves in constant danger of being caught-and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself.

Garbage.

Harry Hook's adaptation is not as faithful to the William Golding novel as you'd wish (they excised the Lord of the Flies dialogue with Simon!) and because of it, the movie is less allegorical and less resonant. A group of young men from a military academy are stranded on an island. The group quickly becomes fractious with a passive section led by Ralph, trying to get rescued, and a hunter faction, led by Jack, trying to procure meat and "have fun." Peter Brook's 1963 filming seemed to get closer to the Darwinist sense of this cultural disintegration. Here, the hunter faction seems more like Peter Pan's Lost Boys than the bloodthirsty murderers they are. The performances, particularly young Getty, don't quite carry the weight of the situation. It's still, however, sobering to slowly watch the school uniforms traded for war paint, and the little boys turn into little savages. --Keith Simanton
Description
With 'sharply expressive performances (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) by its young cast, this stunning adventure explores the deep dark corners of the human soul, as a group of adolescent castaways are thrust into an intense world where law and accountability are governed by the rules of survival. After a harrowing plane crash into the sea, a group of American military cadets finds itselfmarooned on a deserted island. Realizing the minimal chances of being rescued, the boys band together out of fear and desperation. But as the island paradise becomes their own, competition and power struggles split them into two packs. Ralph (Bathazar Getty) leads one group and preaches civilized ingenuity and togetherness, but Jack (Chris Furrh) wants nothing of it and builds a faction of barbaric hunters who ultimately go to war with Ralph. This powerful shift in conscience transforms ordinary kids into primal killers, setting off a devastating battle of good versus evil and presenting a haunting metaphor for the savage in us all.

I'm glad I was never trapped on an island w/ these kids..........2007-06-07
This was a very good movie that came from an even better book. When I was younger I didn't understand people who would claim that the books were better than movies. Now, I do. However, I feel that for this statement to be true, one must have a vivid imagination and be able to immerse themselves in the world that the author created.
Anyway, I loved the book and I thought the movie was well done too. The kids are pretty good at acting. Almost too good, as if they were actually dropped off on an island and told that they had to figure out a way to survive. I would recommend watching this movie w/o children because I think it may be a bit much.
Pretty Good Movie.......2007-06-04
It doesn't follow the book that much, but I think it's pretty realistic of what you see in the movie. It should be different since it's expressing someone's own idea and point of view to the book. Pretty intense and a really great movie. Buy it.
Great Product.......2007-03-11
The product was received in great condition and timely delivered by the seller. I would buy again
It is an ok movie.......2007-02-11
This updated version of this movie is quiet a change from the book. But, just because it is a change from the book isn't a good reason for me not to like it. I did like the movie over all and I thought that the point that the director tried to make came across fine. Even though there were no adults there, the children did develop a "government" and those differences came out in the group that won compared to the group that lost followers. Also, in developing a "government" there was a hierachy of leadership and blood shed. See the movie for yourself and come to your own conclusions about the movie. For myself, I did enjoy it and will probably see it again.
Not the Best Adaptation.......2007-01-07
I read the book and then decided to purchase the film I thought it was not that bad but the swearing it was over the top. If you want to show this movie to students I'll be cautios there are more than 200 swearing words through out the film. There is an older version of this film, which is black and white, but far better than this one.

John Huston's The Red Badge of Courage, like Orson Welles's The Magnificent Ambersons, is a heartbreakingly beautiful film mutilated by its studio after a disastrous preview process. You can--and should--read the fascinating production history in Lillian Ross's Picture. Picture is a classic--and so's the movie, even in a 69-minute reduction featuring a climactic Civil War battle that has Stephen Crane's young hero wearing his red badge of courage, then not wearing it, then wearing it again (MGM editor-in-chief Margaret Booth recut two different battles into one). Most-decorated-soldier-of-WWII Audie Murphy was chosen to star ("a gentle little killer," Huston mused); the shadow of WWII is also felt in the casting of war-front chronicler Bill Mauldin as Murphy's pal, and in Huston's own experience making his great battlefield documentary San Pietro. The panoramas evoke Mathew Brady, and Huston's closeup framing brings a psychoanalytic intensity to the terrified young soldier's inner turmoil. --Richard T. Jameson
Description
Psychological study of an untried young Union soldier who panics in his first encounter with the enemy but regains his courage and emerges a hero. Based on Stephen Crane's novel. Screenplay by John Huston.
Customer Reviews:
Demerits for the entire company.......2007-07-02
Stephen Crane's "Red Badge of Courage " is a sublime psychological study of fear in the face of war, and the way one young man deals with fear -- through flight, bravado, exaggeration and finally, self-confrontation and calm determination. Though the action takes place in one of the most extroverted of possible historical settings -- the American Civil War -- the real warfare takes place in Fleming's psyche. Unfortunately, John Huston was not equal to the task of applying a visual narrative that could convincingly depict the roiling chaos going on in protagonist Henry Fleming's soul. About all he could manage was to put Henry in a few conventional situations and have him knit his brow and bite his lips to communicate his inner turmoil. Audie Murphy, the decorated WWII vet, and Bill Mauldin, the respected war cartoonist and creator of Willie and Joe, were cast in the lead roles. They are likeable and sometimes rise to the level of having a real relationship. But ultimately, their real-world experience doesn't do much to prop up the threadbare narrative. The stilted delivery and wooden acting of much of the cast is a real impediment to enjoying this film. On the plus side, it's daring to portray the baseless bravado and fear experienced by the ordinary soldier. But the profusion of standard Hollywood types, the overwrought and self-important narration, and the unnecessary re-arrangement of Crane's plot combine to muddle the story arc and render the film ineffective.
Although it too suffers from the set piece mentality -- in which characters are pitted mechanically against one crisis after another -- Huston's next film, African Queen, stands out as such a classic. Reason: the sterling acting abilities of Bogart and Hepburn pulled the film through in a way that (sadly) Murphy, Mauldin and others cannot.
The DVD extras are skimpy -- comprising the theatrical trailer and a static listing of the cast. But one extra is fascinating. After comparing RBOC to "Gone with the Wind," (not!) the trailer makes the most lunkheaded claim I have ever seen in film. To paraphrase: "In years to come, The Red Badge of Courage will be as memorable as The Birth of a Nation!" Comparing one's work to a film that glorified the KKK is a feat so bizarre that it stands as a monument to the social blindness of the film's marketers and their era.
Huston's "Red Badge of Courage" is disappointing, plodding and barely worthwhile as a way to visualize the events of the book. The best one can say about it is that it could have been worse. Until a better adaptation is produced, RBOC is a work that should be experienced in one form only: the printed page.
95 Minute Version!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-14
"Red Badge Of Courage" was a film destined to fail from its inception. Louis B. Mayer never wanted the picture to be made and did what he could to discourage the process. He felt it could never be a commercial success without female characters or established stars. Mayer expressed his views directly to John Huston, he said, "It has no story and won't make a cent!"
When the film was finally completed, the test screenings were a failure. Houston remarked: "With the Red Badge of Courage, I quite understood at the time why they took the steps they did. I was present at a preview when damn near a third of the audience got up and walked out of the theatre."
Various edits were tried without the participation of Huston, who was working on the "African Queen" with Bogart and Hepburn, and seemed to not give a damn. All that resulted was a picture that got shorter and shorter. The final release version is 69 minutes. The original cut was of 95 minutes, not two hours as has been suggested.
"...they cut out one scene that was probably the best in the picture, in a way of anticlimax. The monumental death of the tall soldier. The boy and the tattered soldier walk away down the hill, and the tattered fellow says, "I've never seen a feller die like that." He begins to ramble and begins to walk around in circles then dies himself. This was the most extraordinary moment in the picture as far as I was concerned. It wouldn't have made any difference so far as the audience was concerned. They still walked out in the middle of the picture."
The footage that was extracted was from the master negative. It was discarded to the floor of the editing suite and thrown away as useless. There are no records of any of the cut scenes or extra footage surviving.
Louis B. Mayer dispatched a second unit to Huston's ranch. The second unit was to film the battle scenes in Technicolor using the Cinematographic process: MGM Camera 65. Louis B. Mayer, at his most vindictive, shot footage that would eventually be used in future productions with the full knowledge of Huston.
As the problems mounted, Huston's enthusiasm for the project waned and he started to gravitate towards his next project. Huston never re-visited "Red Badge Of Courage". It is assumed he was never happy with the film in its original form or its release version and was happy for the film to fade into annals of film history.
If this Great film is what we get with people messing with it, what a masterpiece it would be if restored.......2007-03-27
One of John Huston's better films(and that is saying a lot) the studio re cut this into what he called "A ...damn mess." Well even in this mess a great masterpiece has been formed. Audie Murphy(World War II's most decorated hero and only in his teen's I believe) plays the youth of the story and brings more talent than anyone ever gave him credit for to the role. You see the fear of battle in him and you can feel it through the screen also. His reaction to cannon and rifle fire remind me of my uncle who served in Nam and how he reacted to the sounds of battle after that.In this day and age of DVD's someone should try to find the lost footage to this and re cut it like Mr. Huston wanted it done so we can all see that Mr. Murphy was more than just a hero, he was a very talented actor who wasn't given the due he should have gotten while he was with us.
Difficult book to make into a movie.......2006-11-27
The movie was beautiful and well-acted. I've lived in Virginia for years and been to many battle sites, and the action and the setting were very well-done.
However, the movie left me feeling flat. The book goes into so much more detail about how the young soldier was feeling, and in this movie, you really don't understand his motivations. The book is not about any particular battle in the war, it's about the struggle insdie the young soldier's head, and it's difficult to communicate that in a movie. There is a "thrift edition" of the book that doesn't cost much. I recommend reading the book instead of watching the movie. Or better yet, read a real anti-war novel written by someone who was really in a war: "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Erich Remarque.
Mangled but not totally destroyed.......2006-05-22
Butchered by studio heads after director John Huston had wrapped production and left to make THE AFRICAN QUEEN, this is one of Huston's finest pictures and a terrific adaptation of Stephen Crane's great Civil War novel. Audie Murphy plays Henry Fleming, the Union soldier who talks the talk about seeing action for the first time, but can't walk the walk when it finally comes, and flees in the middle of battle.
Huston had filmed two battle scenes, though they were combined into one by the film editors; it's still the highlight of the picture and among the best battle scenes ever filmed, thanks mainly to the excellent photography by Harold Rosson. The original version that Huston shot is apparently lost forever, but this shortened one is still an excellent piece of movie making. Because the movie was so short, the studio sent it out as a "B" picture; considered as such it's probably the best "B" picture ever made.

Great entertainment!.......2006-02-27
Matt Cordell, once a respected officer of the law, but now a rage-driven zombie, forced to live an excistence as neither living or dead.
This time he's out to get the persons responsible for a accident that put a female cop in coma.
The movie is very entertaining, perhaps even better than part 2(wich I also liked very mutch) It has good and talented actors, not teenage amateurs like in most other slasher films. The effects are also great, especially a burning car chase that must've been very complicated and unpleasant for the stuntman.
So if you liked part 2(Like I did) then go and get this one as well.
Me Cop 3.......2005-07-23
Matt Corrdell wont stay dead. And this time he's back to clear the name of a cop who kills someone in a foiled robbery, but the footage shown made it look to be her fault, when it was defence. And onc eher name is cleared, for some reason Matt Cordell wants to pot her as his bride.
This one didnt make a lot of sense to me in a few parts. But it has all your cheesy horror movie cliches in it that make this just a late night thriller for those who wanna be entertained and who wont go nitpicking on details and plot lines.
I really lked the ending of the film. It was really a blazing way to go out.
Here's to looking forward to Maniac Cop 4, hopefully.
They should release this as a box set or something. Have the trilogy on one disc maybe? Hell, they didnt bother to include ANY bonus features so 3 of them will fit on a four hour disc.
The official Maniac Cop 3 DVD release!.......2004-06-02
Love it or hate it 'Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence' is here on DVD. The last DVD release was by a company named platinum back in 1999 I believe.
Well this new DVD release has out done the last one, the picture quality is much more clearer and sharper than before and this is also in widescreen and with a trailer!
This is the first official DVD by the original company that released this film back in 1993 so the quality is very good but the front cover artwork is horrible-what were they smoking?
Also William Lustig has been placed back into the credits as the only director (there used to be 2 directors now this states only 1 in both the film credits and the box art).
If you liked the first two Maniac Cop films give this one a try!

Case Study of County Politics.......2006-04-19
This film tells a story about LaSalle Parish in Louisiana (and by extension the rest of America). Sheriff Darryl is shown handling the rigors of his job. Oddly, he carries no pistol - a symbol of lacking something? A truck overturns on a curve, and spills its load of shoes. The poor people show up to carry off their free shoes, recalling that scene in Charles Dickens "Tale of Two Cities". Then a dead body is found, and this scandal should be censored, says the political boss and judge. Sheriff Darryl is visited by an exotic dancer who reports her husband is missing (after dancing at a private club). The rest of the film tells how the murder was solved.
The language and contents of this film would have been banned prior to the 1990s. While "realistic" about the lost souls it portrays, it seems to have no redeeming social values. Yes, it gives a view to politics and personalities not usually seen in films, and which can educate the viewers. The film does not mention the corporations (like Big Oil) that dominated the politics of Louisiana, and other states. We see how the Twin-Party System meets at the top to accomplish its missions. Like in a small county, the heads of the opposing parties meet to divide the spoils. In this film the Governor loses an election. Was he too clean? So a new Administration takes office, and life goes on unchanged. There are some winners and loser, but that's the way the ball bounces. Blaming a small businessman who has a claim against the county seems too cynical.
A sleeper with some big-name actors and a plot about confronting one's own demons.......2006-01-15
(I am slightly confused about why this movie is called "Badge" on Amazon and "The Badge" on IMDb and the rental site Netflix.) That being said...The Badge is a movie about small-town Louisiana politics, about family struggles, about coming to terms with suicidal mothers and homosexual brothers, and about the life-long struggle for justice in crimes against strippers and transsexuals. The plot focuses on the murders of a New Orleans transsexual within the conservative LaSalle parish. The reigning politicos of the parish don't want the alcoholic, local-boy sheriff (played by Billy Bob Thornton) to investigate the matter _too_ seriously and draw too much negative attention to the parish. Sheriff Billy Bob is willing to play along with the game until his party tries to run him off the ticket for the next election.
The action is truly about Billy Bob's sheriff character finding his own true self among the corrupt local and state politicians. He manages both to find himself and to serve justice to the underground sex community (which serves the state politicians in a no-questions-asked deal).
The filmmakers perfectly portray the atmosphere of lose parishes in Louisiana. The viewer will be absorbed into the good-old-boy network of doing business, as well as the desperation of anyone who tries to buck the system or hurt Louisiana's political advancement.
Anyone who enjoys this movie should check out Billy Bob Thornton in the sleeper Chyrstal.
Good Movie.......2005-10-07
Very good who-dun-it movie. It was nice to see New Orleans as it was back before Katrina.
Neo-Noir worthy of the title.......2005-09-25
Billy Bob Thorton is the Sheriff in a Louisiana backwater and Andy Taylor of Mayberry he ain't. Thorton plays Darl, a divorced burnout who falls asleep in his crusier, doesn't like to take calls from his deputies, and who thinks the crime of the most urgency is finding out who took his sunglasses.
Darl's world takes a turn for the worse when during the seemily routine investigation of an overturned tractor-trailer a woman's body is discovered in the swampy ditch a few yards from the wreck. Worse still, the body is a murder victim, the Medical Examiner, Rick Dial is great in his one scene as this character, has found a .22 slug in her.
Things are uncomfortable for Darl enough already, his ex-wife is also the D.A., his teenage daughter is a goth chick who hangs out with a bunch of skaters in the local convenience store parking lot, and re-election isn't looking so hot.
Darl starts to sink his teeth into the murder investigation and soon finds corruption of all kinds on all sides, a perfect noir theme.
Slick direction compliments the acting of Thorton and character actor William Devane who turns in a good performance as the local parish political boss.
A solid story this film would make an excellent compliment on the same bill with "Q&A" starring Nick Nolte and Timothy Hutton.
Compelling Lesson in Tolerance.......2004-09-26
Glad I accidentally caught this on Starz while traveling. Still haven't talked to anyone who has even heard of it, let alone seen it. But, it's excellent--good plot, generally strong acting, and a memorable lesson about learning to accept the full diversity of humanity. That's more than perhaps 75% of American films today offer.

Maniac's Ignominious Swansong.......2003-11-01
Don't let the supremely entertaining Cop 2 build your expectations. The original producer/director team of Larry Cohen and William Lustig were bumped mid-production and replaced by hack extraordinaire Joel Soisson. Consequently, the film suffers from anemic visuals, highly diffused lighting, claustrophobic set pieces, a bright and sunny Los Angeles futily masquerading for gritty NYC, and a synth score that pales in comparison to original composer Jay Chattaway's moody, orchestral music cues (which by eliminating Maniac Cop's signature bittersweet "whistle theme" has committed a cinematic faux pas comparable to changing the Halloween score). The film is not all bad; Cohen's off-beat script still shines through in several places. However, it's an ugly stepchild to the wildly inventive action horror of Maniac Cop 2, the quintissential B movie.
The basic story is a simple, creative coda to the resolution of the second film: after being vindicated by Detective Sean McKinney (Robert Davi), Maniac Cop Matt Cordell (Robert Z'Dar) is ressurected by voodoo magic to help exhonerate comatose cop "Maniac Kate" (Gretchen Becker), who is similarly framed and ostracized when two greedy freelance tabloid reporters (Bobby DiCiccio; and Frank Pesce who gets killed for the second time in the series)doctor a tape of her shooting a drug store clerk. The films lower budget doesn't allow for Cop 2's jaw-dropping stunt work, authentic NYC location shooting, or talented and quirky supporting cast (Cop 2 featered a veritable "who's who" of character performers). Still, Cop 3 is a cut above your average late night cable fare; and Laserlight's low resolution disc is comparable to above average vhs.
Ironically, the Maniac Cop franchise resembles a far loftier trilogy: The Godfather. The series started strong with a raw film that revealed more potential than pay-off (Cop 1), graduated to a grander, more textured sequel that delivered on the promises of the previous installment (Cop 2), but ultimately faltered with a denoument that was rushed and plagued with production problems (Cop 3). And much like Godfather 3, Maniac Cop 3 is better than your average potboiler, yet suffers in comparison to its predecessor. Now, if only someone would give Cohen and Lustig the money Coppolla had...............
This more of an Slasher film than an thriller but Still Fun........2001-12-10
Most thought the murderer cop (Robert D`Zar) is dead but he has been brought back to life by a voodoo man. Now the cop only wants one thing, an woman is his life.
This silly premise works because of Larry Cohen (Phone Booth) Script. Directed by the same director:William Lustig (Maniac Cop 1 & 2, Uncle Sam). The Last in the Series. Watch for actors:Robert Forster (Jackie Brown) & Paul Gleason (The Breakfest Club). Grade:B-.
not as good as Maniac Cop 2.......2000-08-26
I saw this at my local blockbuster and decided to rent it. I thought if Maniac Cop 1 and 2 were that good maybe this will be the same. I was wrong. Maybe it was the lack of a good cast as in the first films despite Robert Davi and Robert Z'Dar. The story was interesting but dull. William Lusting did not directed some of this film and it can tell some of the acting isn't that good. Spiro Razatos did a great job on the stunts and the last 30 minutes was really good. Most of the ways Cordell kills is very stupid. I have seen some good movies like "The Green Mile" and "Night of the Living Dead" but this is not in that catagorie. I recommend this for people who have Maniac Cop 1 and 2 so you can complete the series, but if you didn't like 1 or 2 don't buy it.
You can't keep a good corpse down.......2000-03-13
Considering the fact that William Lustig (director) and Larry Cohen (writer/producer), creators of the two predecessors, were also responsible for this follow-up, it's not surprising that also Maniac Cop 3 turns out to be pretty good - even though Lustig stopped filming after 24 days and was replaced by another director. The cast, including Robert Davi (No Contest) and Robert Forster (Scanner Cop 2), is decent, and you can spot Ted Raimi (Skinner) in a cameo. There are quite some new and interesting ideas, and the whole movie's pace should satisfy any undemanding horror buff, although the end is closer to an action than to a genre flick. Lustig is currently trying to raise money for another sequel - and if it is as good as this one, why not? If you look at Lustig's (in)famous Maniac, it is obvious his style is getting better and better. If directed by some other b-movie filmmaker, this might have turned out to be just another cheap trash movie. Of course, MC3 is not a masterpiece, it's just good thrills for horror fans. And if that's what you looking for, check it out. There is also an Unrated Version available on VHS, try to get that one!
Officer Matthew Cordell finally put to rest. R.I.P........1999-10-02
Well, starting from the end of Part 2. Cordell is finally at rest, although flashbacks from Part 2 become to apparent in the opening credits. A voodoo master of the occult is resureccting Cordell. Basically this has nothing to do with revenge its good if you like Cordell. He actually speaks in this one compared to being Silent in Pt. 1. Part 2. He gasped his name although he was still human kind of. Now he is more burnt. I like Robert Z'Dar but I wish they would have kept his original make up and uniform. I didnt like the leather because it didnt give him to much arm movement.

A trio of action adventures from the popular Pokémon TV series finds our indomitable heroes Ash, Misty, and Brock persevering in their quest to rid the world of evil. In the first episode, "Clefairy Tales," Ash is on his way to Viridian City to compete for his eighth, and final, badge when he finds himself witness to a rash of alien abductions--or are they? Worse yet, Pikachu has been kidnapped for use in an enemy space launch. Can Ash's Bulbasaur save the day? Undoubtedly yes, and just in time for Ash to begin his Earth Badge competition in "The Battle of the Badge." Does Ash really have what it takes to join the Pokémon League? It's showtime in Viridian City's gym against the fearsome gym leader and his "ultimate Pokémon." Let's hope Ash doesn't quit when Team Rocket attempts to subdue him once and for all, especially since Ash and cohorts are due to visit Pokémon Circus. In the last episode, "It's Mr. Mime Time," a supremely fierce Pokémon gives Ash, Misty, and Brock a three-ring performance they'll never forget. Though there's nothing profound here, the formula is pure Pokémon, with enough mischief and general tomfoolery to please fans ages 4 to 10. Followed by The Po-ke Corral. --Lynn Gibson

GIOVANNI REVEALED!!!.......2003-03-22
After months and months of waiting, we finally get to see the face of Giovanni, the mysterious evil leader of Team Rocket! Up until the episode of the Viridian Gym, he had always hid his face in the shadows and used one of those voice-changers to disguise himself. This is the first time we ever see his whole face and hear his real voice. Even though he has a pretty small role overall in the anime, he is one of the coolest characters of all just because he is so mysterious. And then of course there's the appearance of Mewtwo, but come on: you just have to admire that Giovanni for being the only human who was ever able to control Mewtwo.
Final Badge+Mewtwo Kicking Gary's Butt=Awsome Episode.......2002-03-22
I had to get this movie! It's so cool! In the first episode of this video, Clafairys have built a space ship and they plan to take Pikachu with them! The part I like the most is when Jigglypuff and the Clafairy have a slapping contest because the Clafairy took Jigglypuff's marker/microphone. In Battle of the Final Badge, we get to see Mewtwo kick Gary's butt with no effort! Of course, Mewtwo is in its armor and looks so cool! Giovanni leaves Jessie and James in charge because he has to go to an emergency accident. When Ash battles them he soon finds out that the platforms are rigged and when his Pokemon get hurt, he feel their pain too! The next episode shows a lazy Mr. Mime that will not obey the trainer. Can Ash and Co. get the Mr. Mime to perform again? These are my favorite episodes in the entire seires! The Clafairy one is so funny!
"No one will ever defeat the Pokémon that I saw." -Gary Oak.......2001-02-12
Unlike my other reviews, this one will be relatively short. This video contains my favourite episode of the series. Not only does it have the real first appearence of Mewtwo, but... GARY GETS WHUPPED!!! Mind you, I happen to like Gary. He is one of my favourite Human characters aside from Brock and Team Rocket. But the look on his face when he gets his pride handed to him in "Battle of the Badge" is PRICELESS! Aside from the enjoyment of seeing Gary lose and thrusting him into reality, showing him that he cannot win EVERYTHING, I still wonder about Giovanni's "special assignment". Was his car impounded? Alas, viewer... we shall never know... Not even the movie will answer that question. We will have to resort to thinking up that assignment.
In short, this video is great. Now, after Mewtwo came and went in the first series, we will all just have to sit back, relax, and await his return in Johto.
"But still..." Gary's voice dropped to almost a whisper, a slight tremble in his countenance. "No one will ever defeat the Pokémon that I saw..."
pokemon the final badge.......2000-08-03
Ash and his frinds go for an ice cream break and Team Rocket cames as people from outer space and takes pikachu and then a pokemon comes and takes Pikachu Ash goes for his earth badge but Gary goes in first and lost to the leader by a pokemon who noone but the leader knows and Ash faces Team Rocket and they were both in a tarap for the badge by shocking them when there pokemon get hit. The last one is when Ash, Misty, and Brock go back to Pallet Town and Ash and Pikachu Ran into a wall that they can't go though and they go see a Pokemon Show and Ash's mom has a Mr.Mime.
The Final Favorite Of His Badge Journey.......2000-06-13
In the final badge where Ash gets the last Pokemon Leuge Badge, Not Orange League, Team Rocket is in charge of the gym back in Viridian City. WHat they don't know is that team rocket has buby trapped it so ash will be electricuted when his pokemon get hurt. Can aSH sURVIVE tHE tHE fINAL bADGE.

Buy it.
