Well-made comedy. .......2007-06-14

Only problem is, it's silly comedy, and I really can't stand it. This would be great for young kids... for me, not so much. I was hoping for better because I really like Bill Bixby, but this isn't complicated enough to hold me for more than a few seconds at a time. I end up fast forwarding through it to get to the end...

By pricing this $.01 below free shipping, Amazon probably thought that I'd buy more to get the shipping for free. They were wrong. I bought this at a different site plus an additional boxed TV set. Nice try but we're not that stupid!

The Third Season does Exist.......2007-05-16

Telepictures Corporation AmericanLife TV Network is showing the third season of "My Favorite Martian" through the help of Warner Bros. Television. Every other week they are showing each episode in their original format as it was in the fall of 1965 to the spring of 1966 in color. One week a 1965 color episode then the following week a B&W 1964 to 1965 second season episode and then follow by another third season episode.

I don't know if Warner Brothers is running a test to see what kind of a response it will get but it might led to a new re-release of all three season by Warner Brothers. They may only release it on HD-DVD's but only the future will tell.

I am only guessing about all of this because of them televising the series only on one channel in a very large number count. I do not have HDTV, so if they are televising this series on those channels I have no way of knowing. My DVR makes it possible to search through all of the channels that I receive a program. This is how I found My Favorite Martian on one station out of 1000 channels with the exceptions of HDTV.

The show is being televised once a week. There is a repeat of the same episode at midnight but the new one does not come on until the following Friday.

In my own personal view, I doubt that "Rhino" will ever release the third season. So, if you can capture it on TV go for it.

If you're a fan of campy 60s comedy as I am, this is for you. Likeable characters, good writing--they don't make 'em like this anymore.

And so does this piece of pretentious trash! Half-hearted plodding thru a directionless plot by has-beens and wannabe's. The music (what music?) was just as mindless. This movie had so much unleased potential that it was almost torture to watch. I gave it one star for the nice scenery.

I can't resist a movie with Catherine Deneuve - now I may be able to. A boring little tale of the spiraling sickness of an aged parent, unfeeling self-absorbed family, doomed, passionless marriage and a hint of incest. I gave it an extra star because, well it is Catherine after all. Rent it if you're desperate, but do not buy unless you're a masochist.

Scrupulous but unrewarding.......2004-03-22

"My son is a surgeon, my daughter a lawyer. I have children who achieved something. I took much care of them when they were young". (The mother, afer her children sent her off to a home for the aged).

"I saw to it that she has a tv-set in her room".(The daughter, trying to soothe her conscience).

Emilie (Catherine Deneuve) and her brother Antoine (Daniel Auteuil) have not seen each other in three years, but their mother's (Marthe Villalonga) stroke brings them together again. Emilie decides to assume her responsibility and lodge her mother at her house, a solution that makes no one happy. Emilie's marriage exists on paper only and she has difficulties in establishing personal contacts with her grown-up children. Her mother is not very sociable either, and feels like an alien element in her daughter's family. Christmas arrives and when Antoine's quarrel with Emilie's husband turns into a brawl Emilie decides to give up her marriage and her mother packs and moves in with her son. But their living together fails equally. She has the feeling the her son is angry with her: "Have I kept him from living? Little pleasures?". She decides to go home.

Summer arrives and the second stroke. The mother is outwardly composed when she takes place in the car that drives her to her new home. She is so resigned that she killed all her chicken before leaving her house for the last time. She shows no interest for the landscape or her children's incessant talking.

Antoine tries to convince his sister to go to live with him: "We have two brains from one womb" but she hesitates: "I'm afraid of you, Antoine!". The siblings buckle under the nervous strain while their mother is nearly frantic: Her physical condition is serious enough, but the company of senile and mentally disturbed patients finishes her off...

Ah! Why can't director Andre Techine be a little bit more like Claude Chabrol? Chabrol, in Techine's place would have built up an ominous atmosphere and let the audience suspect that something alarming and unspeakable is going on...But Techine has the bad habit of waving a bait (incest) in front of the audience and then leading them up the garden path. The film is well constructed (the four seasons) and the shots look like a perfect dream. The subject - two siblings don't know how to handle their mother and their own fear of old age - can't fail to touch and the performances of the elder generation are marvelous. Villalonga is resolute but ultimately embittered and her dogged attempts to retain her mental faculties are heartbreaking. Deneuve gives one of her greatest performances: warm and noble, trying to give proof of moral strength, outraged to be forced in the defensive and feel guilty about things she cannot change. Sometimes we catch Auteuil at an "arriere pensee" when he unmasks his feelings in his cryptic monologues. He becomes more and more erratic and suddenly he cracks up. But this is just one side of the film. The scenes with the younger generation seem not directed at all, as if the director told them: Folks, you're free. Do your own thing. The scene when Deneuve's son invites his girlfriend to strip in front of his sister (Deneuve's own daughter Chiara) is especially repellent, and Deneuve's "bed-scene" on a park-bench is sickening and unmotivated (The motive was of course to pep a static film up). MA SAISON PREFEREE is a very unrewarding film. High production values but big disappointment. I wish this film were trash, so that I can trample on it. Since it isn't I feel blackmailed...

Intelligent and Wonderfully Brillant Cinema.......2004-02-18

This review refers to the Fox Lorber DVD edition of "My Favorite Season"....

"My Favorite Season" is a wonderful piece of French filmmaking.The intelligent and subtle screenplay, the brillant cast, the beautiful setting of the French countryside,marvelous music, all under the expert direction of Andre Techine, had me hanging on every word,left me wanting more of this exquiste film, and thinking about it for quite some time afterwards.

Catherine Deneuve and Daniel Auteuil, work beautifully together as Emilie and Antoine, brother and sister trying to cope with a very dysfunctional family life, their own troubled relationship and the declining health of their aging mother.This is a family that tries very hard to just like one another, and with the passsing of each season,the changes in their lives run a gamut of emotions. Deneuve, Auteuil, and the rest of this outstanding cast will draw you in with their intuitive performances.It is a film that will involve you from the first frame to the last.

Fox Lorber has a knack for selecting and bringing to DVD some of the best international works out there. "My Favorite Season" is among the best of those. Overall, the DVD presents a nice clear picture in widescreen. The film is in French with subtitles in English. I did not see any way to delete the subtitles though. A trailer, and biographies are also included.

A wonderful emotional drama, and fine piece of filmmaking...enjoy...Laurie

Reality Never Tasted So Good.......2002-12-27

My Favorite Season is a film by Andre Techine. It depicts a dysfunctional French family as they come to grips with life in post-Vichy southern France. I'm kidding of course, the film has nothing to do with French Fascism, except in the sense that that period in history led up to the events depicted in the film, and if there had been no German occupation and Vichy government, this film would have been greatly different.

As to the film, it is lyrical and hypnotic. If this is what the French think of as dysfunction, then I am moving to France, because dysfunction never tasted so sweet. This is one of the greatest movies ever made, and here's why:

I would not say that this was a bad TV show. It has funny moments in it.

It is also charming in it's own way, but I would not go buy it on DVD.

NOT in COLOR as advertised; Black and White only.......2007-01-23

I chose to purchase the second season of this program because Amazon advertises it as being in "COLOR" as opposed to the first season being in B&W. The second season arrived and was described as B&W on the back of the case. I would not have paid $35.99 for the second season if I had known it was not in COLOR. The ad page needs to be corrected.

STOP THE INVASION !!.......2006-12-17

Somehow i just knew rhino's release of season one "My Favorite Martian" was a fluke.The amazing quality found in the season one set is definitely lacking in season two.Season two is also presented in b&w and contains all 38 episodes with a noticeable difference in quality.Fans of the show will be disappointed that 5 of the 38 episodes are presented in their shorter "syndicated" version.This is clearly stated on the back of the dvd package.Rhino also claims that an extensive search came up empty for the original masters of the shorter versions.As a fan of the show i was upset to learn that this was the case.Once again the packaging is pretty cheap and no booklet to go along with the set.Bonus features would also have been nice this time around like commentaries or bloopers.As fans of these old shows,we are at the mercy of the studios to release them.I'm not happy about it but i can overlook the shorter versions.I only hope that the long delay for season three is that rhino is trying to get it right.Please rhino give us the final season produced in color to complete the series.

The third season was produced in Color. How do I know? I own the VHS box set released in the early 90's that contains all 32 third season shows IN COLOR. The first two seasons were produced in black and white.

Enjoyed Seasons 1 & 2--Awaiting Season 3.......2006-08-19

Had no issues with either of the sets for 1 or 2. Picture quality was great, packaging nice. Just pleased to have the chance to have these in my collection. Apparently, Rhino is working on the release of season 3 with bonus material (sometime after Oct. 2006 from what I can gather)--looking forward to that. Thanks Rhino for your efforts!

Enchanting, haunting, sad........2005-05-16

One of the best films I've ever seen. There are no speaking parts, the entire movie is sung. The music was composed by Michel Le Grand and is hauntingly beautiful. I can only recall the English lyrics--"If it takes forever, I will wait for you. For a thousand summers, I will wait for you. 'Til I'm back beside you, 'til I'm touching you. And forever more, I'll wait for you!" The splash of color in the film--from Catherine Deneuve's clothes to the set design are just gorgeous; while at the same time, a contrast to the somber mood of the film. It is a story of a young girl and the love of her life who has to go to Algeria to serve in the army. While he is away, she is pursued by an equally charming and wealthy suitor. Who does she choose and how does it affect her life? Only a French film maker can produce this kind of film that will make you smile, and swoon, and cry all at the same time. A truly lovely and unforgettable cinematic experience.

I agree with all what Roger Strutton wrote about this movie, and in addition I'd like to say that watching this film is a very good way for a beginner to learn a little bit of French.

Also, I am not usually one for love stories or romances, but this film is so simple and sweet, colorful and anti-Hollywood endings, that it really endeared itself to me. Catherine Deneuve is pretty and charming, and her men are likable. This is good to watch on a rainy afternoon, and a fun way to get your foreign movie fix.

Everytime I see an umbrella now, I think of "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg."

Chilly Cherbourg isn't quite Sunny Malibu.......2000-08-26

What I thought initially, "Oh no, not one and a half hours of pure music, no speaking," soon changed within a few minutes to "This is going to be an exciting movie." Being a visual person I was first strike by the color arrangements in and outside and although the music was quite ordinary except for the hit number I Will Wait for You, I started to realize that this New Wave type film was making fun of the earlier American musicals and of Hollywood itself. Jacques Demy doesn't just poke fun at the Frenchman's "friend" across the Atlantic but also of the French themselves.

In France one of the worst crimes is to be bourgeois, in other words middle class. Wealthy is fine, the rich don't have to put on a show, and being poor has its dignity, a glass of wine and a puff on a Gauloises, an intellectual conversation in some smoky dive, what could be better?

The clever color schemes mainly those in Madame Emery's home first of all reflect the middle class attitude that is the Emerys have a sense of taste. The clothes have to match the wallpaper, and not only that each room has to match the person who lives or sleeps in it. We can see this nowadays with the Laura Ashley designs, the curtains, wallpaper, even the bedclothes have the same color and pattern. Laura Ashley stores can be found in all the correct places such as the South Coast Plaza Mall in Costa Mesa where everyone who thinks they are somebody shops, and if this monument is too expensive then a cheaper version of this matching phenomenon can be found in K-Mart.

I believe Jacques Demy took a look at the extreme exaggerations of the Hollywood musical and then went one or two steps further. We can see Aunt Elise also has taste because her apartment has a color scheme of red and cream, even her bedclothes have the same hues. Guy arrives from the hallway which is decorated in blue. He has on a pair of denims and a blue pullover that makes him appear from the blue room almost translucent. After his conversation with Auntie he departs to another room that is also blue. Now I'm sure there's no deep psychological meaning to this but purely Demy enjoying himself.

If we take a look at the plot it isn't very dramatic compared to American films. This is another case where Demy is manipulating the audience. We see these exuberant colors throughout the film and all the time I am expecting something very exciting or different to happen. But it's just a love story, with hardly any ups or downs, everything is on an even keel with Genevieve and Guy going their own way, similar to the average person. Genevieve ends up wealthy just as her mother wished, and Guy owns an ordinary service station. This is also part of the fun because in a Hollywood film, a musical, a comedy or a more serious plot, the protagonist normally ends up with wealth, fame, and a girl on his arm. In Umbrellas at the end we see Guy who has just seen his old flame in a posh car drive away from his very down to earth workplace, and he never saw his kid. It's also snowing to add salt to the wound, no Malibu skyline here, and he continues on with life as he plays snowballs with his son.

Now why didn't Demy choose exciting Paris or Marseilles on the Riviera for the location, here's another finger up at Hollywood. Cherbourg is on the north coast of France bordering the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel with the Atlantic winds blowing from the West through the streets with lots of rain, a thoroughly depressing place, not the Mediterranean where Bridget Bardot or Jean-Paul Belmondo would hang around. From a quick look this film is just a musical, not a bad musical though, but this really is a pure tongue-in-cheek version of the films such as Band Wagon and I can definitely see shades of Singin' in the Rain when comparing the street scenes. In Singin' they are suppose to be real, well kind of, and in Umbrellas they are real but over painted to look artificial. Umbrellas and Rain, I think there must be some kind of connection. I believe the French were having a good laugh when they made this film and I'm sure they thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
