Hawaii Five-O was not your ordinary police drama. Besides the lush location of Hawaii and the unforgettably terrific theme music, the stylized characters and story lines really added a fantastic element to the show, an element missing from more mundane or "realistic" police dramas of both then and now. When you turned this show on from week to week you never knew what kind of story you were going to see. It might be a story about thieves, mobsters or murderers, but it might just as likely be about something larger or more fantastic like international spies, assassination conspiracies or the threat of biological epidemics. Even the stories dealing with common crimes were heavily stylized, often pitting the Five-O team against near super-villain type enemies. In a way, this show mixed the best of police dramas with some of the best elements of stylized spy thrillers, classic detective fiction, and even a tinge of comic book superheroes. It's as if someone took all the best elements of Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, Mission Impossible and Batman and somehow came out with a surreal blend of police melodrama and heroic fiction that is fascinating and fun to watch.

The incorruptible and larger-than-life characters of Steve McGarrett and his stalwart crew of Danny, Kono and Chin Ho made for an interesting mix. At the time this show first appeared on television, only Star Trek had as ethnically diverse and interesting a cast as this show and they were the only two shows to completely eschew ethnic stereotypes in how they used their diverse cast. The show took full advantage of the diversity and beauty of both the Hawaiian Islands as well as the local population when filming, rather than hiding it. This may have been a gamble in 1968, but it's one that happily paid off and helped pave the way for a more realistic view of our country's population on TV in years to come. Hawaii Five-O was a huge ratings success and ran for 12 seasons, forever in the world of TV. And it deserved it. Then and now, these shows are fun to watch. I already own Hawaii Five-O Season One on DVD and am enjoying it thoroughly, as is my young son who is seeing the show for the first time. I am looking forward to owning Season Two on DVD shortly and hopefully more sets after that. "Be there, aloha!"

Long-Running Series Deserves DVD Release.......2007-05-05

Nothing lasts 12 years without having something going for it. In the case of Hawaii Five-O, it easy to dismiss it as a typically television crime drama that got lucky by finding its audience and keeping it. The same could be said for Law and Order. Except, in television years, luck usually runs out after two or three years. Gimmicks get old, the formula is figured out, and sharks are jumped so often they don't even complain.

But shows that last five years, much less 12, have to have something besides luck, gimmicks, and great scheduling. Hawaii Five-O had a number of things going for it. First of all, let's be honest. The setting was, and still is so lush and exotic that it is easily intoxicating. Hawaii is beautiful, and most people either live there or want to live there. Filming on location has always been a blessing when it's been done, and probably no more so than on this series.

Next, Jack Lord, playing Five-O chief Steve McGarrett, was one of a long line of no-nonsense law enforcement figures. The strength, integrity, and dedication of these kinds of characters cannot be overstated, and these characters will always have lots of fans rooting them on, not unlike Law and Order's Jack McCoy.

Finally, watching shows like this is always a treat because you see so many stars that were either big stars enjoying a working Hawaiian vacation, or lots of up and coming stars before they got their big break. Hawaii Five-O was a natural draw for both categories, and it's fun to watch them and remember when.

It's also fun to remember when you could look forward to hearing one of the best and most recognizable theme songs in television history. Not a small thing when you add it with the other factors. Hawaii Five-O had a lot going for it then, and it has a lot going for it now.

Bored, she hung herself finally available!.......2007-05-03

The second season of Hawaii Five O is coming to DVD. This season had great episodes such as Blind Tiger, where McGarret is blinded by a car bomb, and is helped in his recovery by a nurse played by Marion "Mrs C" Ross, Forty feet high and it kills, which featured Wo Fat for the first time since the Pilot episode, and A thousand Pardons, you're dead, which had a brief apperance by Loretta "Hot lips" Switt.
But the real highlight of this set is the episode, Bored She hung herself.It aired only once, and has never been shown in syndication. According to Rose Freeman, wife of Hawaii Five O creator Lenoard Freeman, someone attemped a hanging stunt shown in this episode, and died as a result. So it was withdrawn and never released to syndication. It has been bootlegged over the years, and it will be great to finally see it in its orginal form. Also I hope there will be more extras on this set. Thanks to Paramount for getting Season 2 on the way, and hopefully the pace of releases will pick up.

There's plenty to like about Hawaii Five-0, the late '60s cop show debuting on DVD by way of this seven-disc set including all episodes from the first season, along with the two-hour pilot that preceded it. Like the music, featuring Morton Stevens' popular theme song. Or the lovely Hawaiian scenery. And let's not forget "Book 'em, Danno," the signature line delivered (although not nearly as frequently as one might expect) by star Jack Lord's Steve McGarrett, not to mention Lord's perfect hair and wrinkle-free slacks. As for everything else, let's just say that Hawaii Five-0 has not aged well. Some of that is inevitably due to the infinitely more sophisticated production values of the series that have followed in its wake; Five-0's technology, sets, and other practical elements are laughably primitive by current standards. Problem is, the cheese factor extends to pretty much every other aspect of the show as well. Most of the action sequences are utterly tension-free, and the pace is frequently glacial, with interminable scenes bogged down by talky exposition. The dialogue is risible: McGarrett refers to one adversary as "a dirty, double-dealing fink," while the so-called hippies who populate the islands utter the kind of idiocies that could only have been written by cubes whose closest contact with the counterculture came from TV commercials for Hai Karate men's cologne ("Looks like splittin' the scene was real cool, baby" is but one egregious example). Lord does a decent job as the stiff-but-heroic McGarrett, variously described as "a hardhead," "an organizational misfit," "a brilliant operator," and "a rebel," but by and large the acting (including guest shots by Sal Mineo, Ricardo Montalban, Gavin MacLeod, and Yaphet Kotto) is wooden. Story-wise, "Cocoon," the pilot, features an intriguing premise wherein U.S. intelligence agents undergo sensory-deprivation torture before spilling their secrets; elsewhere, the elite Five-0 team deals with jewel thieves, gold smugglers, kidnappers, gamblers, murderers, mobsters, all-purpose "criminal masterminds," and even "Red agents" spreading the bubonic plague. In sum: with its light (if not quite frothy) tone, Hawaii Five-0 will offer harmless escapism to some viewers, especially those with a nostalgic bent. Others, however, will long for more substantial fare--you know, like Deal or No Deal. The DVD set includes a single bonus feature: "Emme's Island Moments: Memories of Hawaii Five-O," a retrospective with James "Danno" MacArthur and other cast and crew members. --Sam Graham

These DVD's are wonderful. The quality of the picture is great. We really enjoy seeing these older shows again. Would definitely buy the next season.

Book 'Em Danno.......2007-06-18

Lets be honest, if not for Hawaii Five-o, there would be NO Magnum PI. If not for Hawaii Five-O, we would not have such hard driven detective shows that we have had. To praise the first season is easy. These mini movies were complete and complex stories, not like some of the items on TV today.

The stories of the first season were good story telling. It also used one other character, its location..Hawaii. It was not a studio type of production, it was filmed in the 50th state fully. The cast did not dumb down the dialog nor the action and not the location. Note Hawaii may be the back drop, but it was not a sightseeing tour..meaning you saw Hawaii, but the audience was not made as a look at the sites. Hawaii's unique landscape is what made this interesting.

Jack Lord was no Columbo. He was hard as nails team leader. He showed strenghth and conviction is every action and his team backed him. He was nononsense but he also had a heart and you can see it

The first 28 were well due. Bless CBS video for not releasing half sets or best of. Just good Television to enjoy

This is a GREAT set for any Hawaii 5-0 afficianado. I purchased this as a gift for a colleague who is a big fan! My father was one of the original cast members so my friend was thrilled to receive an autographed copy of the set!

Time capsule from a bygone Hawaii.......2007-06-04

From 1969 to 1983 I had the delightful opportunity to grow up in Honolulu, even though my permanent home was in Wisconsin. It was a magic place for me, and a great place to be a kid. Sometimes we would see a street blockaded for filming Hawaii Five-O, and we'd strain our eyes to see if we could spot Jack Lord or a big black Five-O car. Now I'm so appreciative that the show was made. It so beautifully showcases an era of post-war Hawaii that just doesn't exist in the same way anymore, starting in the late 60's and lasting (incredibly) until the earliest 80's. Admittedly, it's the setting that makes the show so special for me, but even if you have no particular interest in Hawaii, it is a very entertaining show full of endless retro moments. See McGarret pat his secretary and send her off to make coffee. Thrill to Steve's use of cutting edge lingo like "cool, man" and "bad trip". Delight in Kono's wooden delivery of simple lines. When I was a kid I assumed it only took one sharp kick to knock down any door; that's all it took for McGarret! If your interested in police shows from this time period, I don't think you'll be disappointed with Hawaii Five-O. Just don't expect it to be CSI.

Awesome Piece of Wor.......2007-06-01

I watched this show religiously with my family when I was a child/teenager (I was 9 when the show premiered). It's just as good today as it was then. They don't make TV as good anymore. I don't know if the producers restored the videos, but the color quality is just awesome. The Hawaii scenery is magnificent. The stories, while a bit dated, are still good. McGarrett is the number one cop in my book. I can see how Miami Vice was inspired by this show. I can't wait until the season two DVD's come out in July.

Quality surf movie.......2007-06-12

I grew up surfing and in the "surf culture" of Southern California. I watched many, many movies over the years and found that most were good as far as the surf scenes (Pipeline, Java, Australia etc.) but ultimately became boring due to a lack of any examination about real watermen/women and what drives them in this art & sport. This sport/art is about a relationship with a vast and ever changing ocean. An eye on the weather, tides and several of other Mother Nature's elements is what the true "soul" surfer does on a daily basis to deepen that relationship.

This movie successfully captures that essence through well placed & crafted interviews along with recording the many faces and moods of the ocean. Can you imagine a man paralyzed by this very sport, yet is still very keen to continue to have the same "stoke" (excitement) out enjoying waves again? Or a group of surfer atheletes daring to surf waves so big 100 miles off the Pacific shore that if any of these giant waves hit any cruise ship it would sink it in seconds. Why? What drives these individuals and others to brave the elements for what appears to be a silly ride? From the professional to the novice, all who surf on a regular basis possess this spirit.

Watching this movie you will begin to discover the answers about a true modern day explorer's mindset.

First off, the full version of Kelly Slater pro surfer IS NOT INCLUDED, that was the reason I bought the DVD.

This movie is for KOOKS and NON SURFERS, it is boring and lame. No real surfing, nothing intense, nothing special. Buy another DVD.

I have watched this DVD over and over. The two media formats has me watching it at home and work. It motiviated me to upgrade my video and sound cards. You wouldn't believe how clear the picture is on the HD computer screen (I have a 24" flat panel)...only thing better would be there! This is a well done production. I highly recommend it to a whole new kind of desktop surfers around the world!

Step Into Cinematography.......2007-05-08

The only reason I bought this movie was because of Dana Brown. After watching Dust To Glory, I wanted to see more of his work, and I wasn't disappointed with "Liquid". I'm an amature videographer, and really appreciate seeing work that the pros do. The scenes in this movie are spectacular, especially the shots where the camera operator is in, and under the water. Like in Dust to Glory, the surfers stories are intertwined with the beautiful scenery. I highly recommend buying this movie!

"Lilo and Stitch" was pretty colourful and suprising, I thought. Bit of a treat to watch, actually. Wasn't quite like a Disney, and yet it was. Sees an experimental alien Stitch lifeform crashland with a single mother and her daughter, Lilo. Worth a look for fans of unique animation.

Good movie, some mature content.......2007-03-13

Overall the DVD was good and very much appropriate for young children. However, after a couple of weeks it had fallen to the back of his preference list. We've not watched it in over a year now. I guess this isn't so different from any other DVD we have.

I would recommend this for young children. It does have a few concepts that are not appropriate, but are presented in a way that is way over the heads of children adn does have a few scenes that very concervative parents may term violent.

A child at heart............2007-02-24

This is one of Disney's more captivating modern movies. My husband and I don't have children, but we wore out the first VHS watching it. The acerbic nature of that little blue outcast is captivating. The basic morals that the story plays out are good for kids. But the humor keeps me buying copies as I burn them up.

This DVD is ok but not great. I was quite disappointed and felt misled by the the high ratings given to this DVD (4-5 stars) on most of the reviews I'd read. In my opinion it is too repetitive and too slow if you have been doing step aerobics for a long time and are at an advanced level as I am. Although I did get a work out, it was not as exciting as I'd hoped it would be.

Loved it! "Gilad's Step Aerobics" is a good workout for those who are beginner to intermediate. I really worked up a serious sweat :D The moves were easy to follow , and his cues were pretty good. I found myself not even looking at the t.v., I just followed his voice :D I'm hoping to get more of Gilad's workout dvds for my collection. :D

I do this workout at least 4 times a week. Although the music and outfits are a bit cheesy, the workout itself is awesome. It is the only thing that gets my heart rate up and doesn't kill my knees. I also love the ab workout at the end. I have been doing this for about 5 weeks now and I can really see a difference in my stomach and waist. No other workout has given me these kind of results. I highly recommend this dvd to anyone.

While not the most intense work out, I enjoy the routines as they are biomechnically well thought out and set up well. I've enjoyed doing the routine and would recommend it for both beginners (can do without the step to start) as well as those who have experience with stepping. A good way to work out at home. THe stretching afterwards part could have been more thorough.

I absolutely love this video and have ordered it for friends. Jack Johnson and the Malloys did a great job with this one. Warning: don't set your expectations too high because this was not made for the critics. These guys are out there having fun. The budget was tight and the whole thing was made using 16mm film. If you are looking for a great video to chill out and relax with, buy this one. There is barely any dialogue, but great tunes by Jack Johnson, G.Love, and many more. A Brokedown Melody is the new video that these guys have released. I highly recommend that one as well. More dialogue and more of a storyline. Also Kelly Slater with great surfing.

If you're a surfer you will truly enjoy this journey. This DVD lives up to all that was said about it. Photography is great. The story is ok too. Most of all it is one of those very enjoyable surf films without all the stupid idiot jerks doing "jackass" sorts of things that some Directors think is what the public want. This is more a classic surf DVD. I really like it.

This DVD was horrible. I didn't know what to expect... but after the first 10 minutes I was thinking... is this it?! What's going on? Where are they? What am I watching? After awhile I clued in that there would be no story and virtually no dialog or commentary... nothing. They don't even tell you where they are?! It's basically a 45 minute music video. And the music, although I like it, doesn't fit with the footage at all. I really don't understand the point of this project. I watched the first 20 minutes uninterrupted and then started fast forwarding. Total waste of time and money. And I am a Jack Johnson fan.

good surf film.......2006-01-03

Nice video from the malloys and jack. Filmed in quite a few different locations..australia(no exact spot was specified), the big island of hawaii, the north show of oahu, indonesia, ireland and tahiti. The directors commentary is worth watching multiple times and the segments with shane dorian and kelly slater are both very good. It was also nice to see ireland in a surf film...somewhere kinda different from the norm.

The photography is really great...shot on a 25 year old 16mm camera, gives it a nice feel..not blurry and not digital looking. Also kinda neat is the bonus footage for holes to heaven, a song jack wrote while filming this project. The great thing is that I bet that quite a few fans of jack's music have no idea he's a great filmmaker and surfer too.

The green board (hobknobber) segment makes more sense also when you watch the commentary also the names of almost all the surfers are told while they are surfing in the commentary...seems as though most of the reviewers here missed that point. The waves are generally pretty average with the only great waves being a couple in ireland and a spot in tahiti that isn't teahupoo but it looks real nearly identical exept it spits way harder(according to the directors). Definitely would reccomend this video to just about anyone that's even considering buying it and for the price it's really a great deal.

The main concert is presented in its entirety for the first time since its original worldwide satellite telecast, and reedited to remove the now-dated split-screen "montage" look. But that's not all--as a prelude to the concert, the first disc includes 17 uncut minutes of the "Elvis arrives" footage (only 2 minutes of which appears in the concert film) followed by the complete rehearsal concert that took place two days before the telecast. Fun and Beautiful.......2007-05-19

I just tried Tahitian cardio today and I had a blast. It's only about 40 min but I was definitely sweating. I'm in pretty good shape and I have some dance experience but I still found it to be challenging but easy enough to improve with practice. Kili is cute and reminds me of Rania in manner and body type.
Most importantly I had a smile on my face the whole time. If you want a fun intermediate level workout where you learn beatiful dance moves, this is the DVD for you

I was very pleased with this workout. Kili actually teaches you the Tahitian Hula. It was very easy to follow and really works the thigh and hip muscles without being to strenuous. If you are looking for a nice, easy workout this is it. I will be getting more of her workouts.

If you've always wanted to try hula - DON'T PASS THIS UP!.......2007-03-11

This workout definitely isn't for any major fitness buffs looking to get even more buff, but for the regular gals, it's very fun, motivating, and relaxing, even though you're sweating at the end! After just one week, I'm already seeing my hips and waist start to slim down. I've been working out nearly every day for the past 2 months and had hit a plateau. Then I tried this and in one week, it kick started me back into losing weight - I lost 2.5 lbs just this week and my only exercise was doing this video!

Unless you're familiar with hula dancing, it will take 2-3 watchings to get the routine down. The first 2 times, I was constantly rewinding to try to be able to learn what they were doing. But just go for it and you'll pick it up quick. Just remember to keep your knees bent and it will be that much easier, as well as more effective. After a week, there are still a few places where I have trouble (I'm not the most coordinated when it comes to moving my hips and arms and feet all at the same time) I've found that the better I get at the video, the more of a workout I'm getting. I'm usually dripping with sweat at the end, but didn't feel like I'd worked that hard, until the next day :)

What I really like about the video is that it's broken down into 3 parts - the workout, where Kili shows you the dance, then breaks it down over the course of about 27 minutes; then there's the dance itself, where the routine is repeated 3 times for a total dance time of 3 minutes; and finally the cooldown, which brings the total video time to about 36 minutes. I find that I have so much fun doing the workout, that I will keep rewinding to do the dance 3-4 more times before moving on to the cooldown.

Kili is an excellent hula instructor, and her two assistants are beautiful. Seeing how graceful the three are and how beautiful the dance looks really motivates me to try to get to their level. Kili has a very soothing voice and not at all annoying like a lot of video workout instructors.

What I don't like about the video is that in a few places, especially towards the end of the dance portion, the camera angle makes it harder to see what the girls are doing below the waist - but once I got the routine down, that wasn't an issue anymore. Also, when doing the bumps towards the end of the dance portion, the girls start moving a lot quicker and it's kind of hard to keep up, but that's getting easier the better I get.

Overall, I highly recommend the Tahitian Cardio with Kili. I love it so much that I'm planning to buy more of her Island Girl DVDs and have recommended it to all my friends

Easy and motivating workout.......2007-01-26

I have to say I just tried it yesterday, this workout really motivates you to move, dance and tone your body. I think the dance moves particularly tones the tummy/hip/thigh area if you do it everyday. Dance moves looks very elegant and takes a little bit time to learn to do it gracefully, needs practice therefore motivates me to do it everyday.
The workout flow is good, not too slow and can easily follow as a quick daily workout keep your heartbeat up!! You will love it if you like dance and need to excercise!
