Description
The Power of One is an intriguing story of a young English boy named P.K. and his passion for changing the world. Growing up he suffered as the only English boy in an Afrikaans school. Soon orphaned, he was placed in the care of a German national named Professor von Vollensteen (a.k.a. "Doc"), a friend of his grandfather. Doc develops P.K.'s piano talent and P.K. becomes "assistant gardener" in Doc's cactus garden. It is not long after WWII begins that Doc is placed in prison for failure to register with the English government as a foreigner. P.K. makes frequent visits and meets Geel Piet, an inmate, who teaches him to box. Geel Piet spreads the myth of the Rainmaker, the one who brings peace to all of the tribes. P.K. is cast in the light of this myth. After the war P.K. attends an English private school where he continues to box. He meets a young girl, Maria, with whom he falls in love. Her father, Professor Daniel Marais, is a leader of the Nationalist Party of South Africa. The two fight to teach the natives English as P.K.'s popularity grows via the myth. Maria is killed. P.K. looses focus until he sees the success of his language school among the tribes. He and Guideon Duma continue the work in hopes of building a better future for Africa.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-06-04

Forget the book-reading elitists, this movie is excellent. I've never read the book, but the movie is incredibly good. I don't care if it's the same as a book or not, it's a totally different medium.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best kept secrets........2007-05-13

I have enjoyed this unknown movie for years and decided to get it on DVD. I always thought this was one of the best movies I've ever seen. Years later I found the book. The book is much better. If I had read the book first I don't know if I would have enjoyed the movie as much. Saying that. watch the movie first then read the book. You'll love them both that way.

3 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2007-01-12

First off i love LOVE this book. It has been one of my favorites for years.
I found out about the book by catching a scene of the film on HBO, namely the prison concert scene. I was moved and had to read the book.

i have never seen anything besides that one scene until now.

I found the film distracting. Namely the child actors who played PeeKay (the teenager, not the very young child.) It was so bad I had to turn the film off.
I found it the constant narrative of the cyhild over what was happening very distracting especially as the book is written as a retrospective, and as beautiful as the line is "the Lonliness birds layed big stone eggs in my heart.." it sounds a little sophisticated coming from a five year old.
I was also disappointed to see major sections of the book cut out - in particular the train ride where PeeKay meets Hoppie Groenwald, the boxer who dubs the child the next welter weight champion of the world..
I think if the film had simply followed a chronological manner, it
would have been better. i didn't like being told what was happening. i prefer storytelling in which i am allowed to discover the mysteries as well. And it needed more of the original story. that and the irritating teenage actor bugged the heck out of me.

so if havent read the book, then you're probably fine. but if you have, don't rent the film or buy it. go back and read it again...
(three stars because Morgan freeman is in it, and because i love the book)

4 out of 5 stars One of the Great Films of Our Times .......2007-01-10

"The Power of One" began its existence as a novel. A story which I found one of the most touching books I've read, and I have been a reader of books my whole life. My first exposure to the movie version was on Laser Disc. I was collecting movies pertaining to South African history during a time when several films were available on the subject of Apartheid, etc. The book and my laser disc version of "The Power of One" became a 'cult' movie among family and friends.
I would rate the screenplay, the overall story, the casting (superb), acting, film work, as 5 Star. The transfer to DVD seems to have kept the one flaw that the original recorded movie possessed and that is difficulty in hearing the dialogue in many scenes; especially the out of doors filming. I have watched this movie many many times and always wonder if the sound was recorded on location without any studio dubbing. That would be my only criticism of this film. The cast of characters are remarkable. The message of the film is beautifully filled with much tenderness and caring despite the violence involved, which, I feel, was so necessary to carry the message that "The Power of One" brings to all the family of man who reside here on this beautiful blue/green orb called "Earth", whereon all that has ever happened to us has taken place.
When I feel at rope's end with the frustration of the problems of the world today, I 'tie a knot in the end of that rope', hold on for dear life and break out either the DVD version or my original laser disc version of "The Power of One" and renew my faith in mankind. Truly, the film is well named "The POWER of ONE"". --- KJA

4 out of 5 stars Why you need to see this movie.......2007-01-07

I've read the book and watched the movie I found that the movie was
pretty good, but the book easily puts the movie to shame. The book is
much more detailed and they're are a lot more boxing matches in it. I
loved the book but I still liked the movie, if you aren't big on
reading then you should at least check out the movie.

The movie is about a boy who goes to boarding school and get picked on,
they beat him and even piss on him. Eventually he is taken back to his
grandfather because his mother died. He meets a man named Doc who
teaches him about the world. Doc is a German who because of WWII is
taken to jail. Peekay his a unbiased eye, he is blind to the racism
around him. He visited Doc in jail where he mets Geel Piet a black
boxing coach who teaches him how to box. Peekay ultimate goal is to
become the Welterweight Champion of the World. But to the Black
population in South Africa he is their savior. This movie is about a
mans goal to become a champion boxer, but it is about about the equal
rights of men.

Director Clint Eastwood's 1997 box-office hit stars himself as Luther Whitney, a highly skilled thief who finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, witnessing the murder of a woman involved in a secret tryst with the U.S. president (played by Gene Hackman). Determined to clear his name, Whitney cleverly eludes a tenacious detective (Ed Harris) while investigating a corruption of power reaching to the highest level of government. Adapted by veteran screenwriter William Goldman from David Baldacci's novel, this thriller balances expert suspense with well-drawn characters and an intelligent plot that's just a pounding heartbeat away from real White House headlines. Absolute Power features the great Judy Davis in a memorable supporting role as the White House chief of staff who desperately attempts to cover up the crime. --Jeff Shannon

Description

He was there he shouldn't have been and saw what he shouldn't have seen. Now, who will believe the word of a career thief and ex-con? Who will trust Luther Whitney when he says he saw a woman killed and that the man responsible for her death is the President of the United States? Clint Eastwood portrays Whitney and directs this crisp, finely acted thriller based on David Baldacci's best-selling novel. A stellar cast which includes Gene Hackman and Ed Harris creates well-rounded characters that intensify constantly spiraling game of cat and mouse between Whitney, local police and the highest levels of White House power. Eastwood is a master at steadily raising the stakes in thrillers. Here his mastery is absolute.

4 out of 5 stars A fine, intelligent thriller, with thanks to Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman and Judy Davis, among others.......2007-06-11

So the president of the United States may not be the nicest guy in the world. Well, we've known that can be the case since 1789. So the idea of our presidents engaging in sexual shenanigans may be as uncomfortable as realizing our parents do it. Well, we've learned more than we want to know over the last few decades about how our presidents spend their time when they aren't bringing peace to the world and ensuring our domestic tranquility. One of the reasons Absolute Power is such a fine thriller is that it involves the dirty doings -- murder, cover-ups, self-serving righteousness -- of those in high elected office.

Absolute Power is the story of Luther Whitney (Clint Eastwood), "one of the great thieves of the world," who breaks into the mansion of Walter Sullivan (E. G. Marshall), a very rich, very powerful and very old political kingmaker. But then Luther hears voices and has to hide in a bedroom vault with a one-way mirror. He has to watch the rough sex between the rich man's much younger wife and a friend of hers. When things get out of hand and she angrily starts to do some stabbing, suddenly two very competent men break in and shoot the lady dead. They're followed by an aggressively competent woman who proceeds to clean things up and spin a story that a thief must have killed the lady of the house. Luther comes to realize that the two shooters are Secret Service agents, the competent woman is Gloria Russell (Judy Davis), the president's chief of staff, and the man is Allen Richmond (Gene Hackman), the unscrupulous president of the U. S. Luther is spotted and barely escapes but Russell and the two agents manage to identify him. They also learn he has an estranged daughter, Kate Whitney (Laura Linney), a young prosecutor. At first Luther decides to take his accrued wealth and flee the country. Then he sees a press conference on television where Richmond uses the grief-stricken Sullivan, who made him president, in a smarmy soap opera of shared grief. Luther changes his mind and decides to see that justice is done. Luther's brand of justice is resourceful, clever and dangerous. All the while he has to deal with an honest homicide cop, Seth Frank (Ed Harris), who is on his trail, an assassin hired by Sullivan to kill whoever killed his wife, and the machinations of Gloria Russell, determined to shield Richmond, aided by the two Secret Service agents. One, Bill Burton (Scott Glenn), has a conscience. The other, Tim Collin (Dennis Haysbert), does not.

Eastwood and writer William Goldman have, in my opinion, concocted a fine, intelligent thriller that plays off Eastman's age ("Go down a rope in the middle of the night? If I could do that, I'd be the star of my AARP meetings."), gives us some fine set pieces (the break-in, killing and cleaning up; the attempt on Luther's life by two separate assassins when he meets his daughter; and the wonderfully played dance at a White House ball between Hackman and Davis) and which is told at a more-or-less human-sized scale. While I think perhaps too much time was spent on the relationship between Luther and his daughter, it's this relationship, well acted between Eastman and Linney, that helps raise the movie beyond just another thriller.

Three things make this movie so good. First, there are two sets of intriguing relationships, one of which is poignant and tender, the other almost grotesquely amusing. The Eastwood-Linney situation is the first. And then there is the Allen Richmond-Gloria Russell pas de dieux. He depends on her but we know he'd toss her out in a minute if he needed to. She depends on him, probably loves him, and would gut her mother to protect him and her power ("I'll take care of everything. Like I always do."). It's fascinating, especially as played out by Hackman and Davis. Their White House waltz at the ball, where Davis is coy because she thinks the necklace she received was a present from Richmond, and Richmond knows, and tells her, that the necklace was the one worn by Sullivan's wife and that it had to have come from Luther Whitney, is a classic lesson in acting. The two of them play every emotion you can think of, all the while dancing in close-up and smiling for the admiring guests. The scene is a tour de force and immensely funny.

Second, this movie is so good for what Eastwood and Goldman don't do. This is a thriller without explosions, without wild car chases and without star posing. We're left to focus on the story, on the intelligence of the dialogue, on the cleverness of the situation. As Roger Ebert said, "it's a thriller not upstaged by its thrills."

Third, and most importantly, is the casting. The impact of the movie primarily rests with Eastwood, Hackman and Davis. Each one has shown many times that they can carry a movie by themselves. Judy Davis is the least known and has been stuck in character roles for years. However, just watch her in My Brilliant Career, A Passage to India or Children of the Revolution to see an actress who can dominate a movie. The second tier, made up of Ed Harris, E. G. Marshall, Laura Linney, Scott Glenn and Dennis Haysbert are just as effective. These are experienced actors who work well together and who know how to deliver their stuff. E. G. Marshall at 83 gives a performance that combines great sadness with an implacable sense of retribution. And Scott Glenn, such a good actor who has slowly slipped down to smaller, secondary roles, gives a performance of such regret it nearly distracts us from the story.

The movie is in real need of a better release. The picture is consistently too soft and frequently too dark in the night-time and interior scenes. There are a couple of inconsequential extras.

4 out of 5 stars Absolute Power.......2007-05-07

Clint Eastwood and a very good story plus a great cast makes for a keeper for collectors.

2 out of 5 stars READ THE BOOK, FORGET THE FILM........2006-12-11

I read the brilliant book first (always a good idea) and got the film expecting a similar reaction. If you want a standard Clint Eastwood thriller with a top notch crew then this is your standard fare. It's all fairly nice and staid and rather slushy at the end but if you want a version of the book DON'T BOTHER it is a virtual rewrite, leaving out the main character Jack, his daughter's ex-boyfriend completely. The basis of the book was built around him defending Luther and finding out the truth. In the book the daughter hates Luther, in this she just vaguely dislikes him. Don't want to give to much away but Luther isn't even in the end of the book and the way he manipulates the authorities is non-exsistant. See what i mean? they should of said 'based on the book...but only a little'.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting suspense thriller!.......2006-03-27

This is an interesting film with Clint playing a cat burglar who likes to paint as a hobby. He is estranged from his daughter due to his criminal actiity but longs to be involved in her life.

Clint plays this part with dignity and grace. The story is well written and interestingly filmed. It was nice to see Gene Hackman as part of the supporting cast.

5 out of 5 stars A solid thriller with a message.......2005-10-24

Absolute Power is not among Clint Eastwood greatest films, but it's much better than is usually given credit for. A dark thriller, directed as professionally and bleakly as only Eastwood can do it, Absolute Power centers around Luther Whitney, a professional burglar (Eastwood himself, in one of his best performances in the last decade), who finds himself in a classic wrong place, wrong time situation - while robbing a luxurious mansion, he accidentally witnesses a sexual assault and a murder, and the subsequent cover-up, that involves the President of the United States and the White House staff. That scene at the very beginning of the movie is probably the strongest one in it, Eastwood making brilliant use of cinematography, music (and especially the lack of) and his trademark heavy contrasted lighting, and with almost no dialogue at all, it's a remarkably effective scene that overshadows much of the rest of the film.

Still, as the film turns into a more standard conspiracy-thriller, it holds its own quite well, mainly due to William Goldman's wonderful script (as his always are, this is the genius who wrote 'The Princess Bride', 'Marathon Man', 'Misery' and 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid', among others) and most of all thanks to the absolutely fantastic all-star cast; other than Clint himself, who is ideal as the charming, ruthless but honest criminal, fantastic performances are also given by Gene Hackman as the President and by Ed Harris as the detective on the case. The rest of the excellent cast includes Laura Linney ('Primal Fear') as Luther's daughter; the fantastic Judy Davis ('Naked Lunch', 'Barton Fink') as the President's sneaky assistant; Scott Glenn ('Buffalo Soldiers'); Dennis Haysbert ('Far From Heaven'); E.G. Marshall ('Tora! Tora! Tora!'); Penny Johnson ('24'); and Richard Jenkins ('Six Feet Under'). As is usually the case with Clint Eastwood's films, all the actors seem to have been hand-picked by him directly, rather than participated in an audition, because each character seems to have been designed specifically for the actor portraying them. Because of that cast and the brilliant directing and dialogue, Absolute Power is an entirely gripping watch, even if the story is at times less than entirely convincing and just a little fragmented.

Absolute Power tries to make its mark on three levels - the thriller level is the only one where it completely succeeds, and it manages to be constantly exciting, gripping and enticing. It works slightly less well on the human level, because the inter-character relationships are rather poorly developed. Laura Linney's character in particular is underdeveloped, and so the father-daughter relationship element hardly carries any weight in the story, and neither does her relationship with Ed Harris's character. As there is no interaction between Eastwood's character and Hackman's, the only relationships that are worth mentioning are the ones between Eastwood and Harris, which is strictly superficial and based on mutual respect, and the one between Hackman and Marshall, who plays the old billionaire who funded Hackman's rise to the presidency. The third level on which the film works is as political commentary; there it achieves partial success, as the story often seems contrived (although, one might note, not as contrived as we may imagine). Still, it can give you a general idea of how absolute power corrupts, and of the kind of horrors that the intricate systems of democracy might hide; but it's not to be taken too literally. The strongest elements of the story are the mystery, and Clint Eastwood's character, clearly the strongest in the film; as such it's a solid and enticing thriller with lots of atmosphere and wonderful acting, that will keep you glued to your seat.

The second part of the series introduces the newest characters of the great rebilleion and of the evil horde.

Fans of He-Man should consider adding the series 2 boxed sets as part o their collection. Many episodes features He-Man and his friends Orko and the Sorceress. Also included are two episodes with Skelletor, very very funny indeed ~

Great packaging, episdoe summaries and art cards of the characters.

I love this dvd collection and as cheesy as this may sound I am so glad I bought it. My 2½ year old nephew and I watch it together (he likes She-ra's sword and swiftwind). I can't wait for the last volume to come out!

The discussions on the commentary are intersting, but unfortunately nothing special. Please note that this is for only die hard fan of 1980s animation. Enjoy!

I don't know why neither He-Man or She-Ra weren't released on DVD back when He-Man made a comeback in 2002. Hallmark must not have seen a market in these. But we have proven that there is by purchasing these sets. This very set continues the She-Ra story in a great way. Beginning and ending the set with Orko episodes, great way to do it, IMO, because Orko is one of my favorite characters. Thank you, BCI!

5 out of 5 stars More than the just show........2007-04-12

Of course, it's important to love the series in order to even think of purchasing the box set, but the actual presentation of the box set matters just as much. Fortunately, the She-RA Volume 1 box set is absolutely gorgeous, I've never seen such a well done box set before. Each disc has its very own unique cover (for example, one disc will have the upper body of She-RA, Glimmer, or Hordak, and so on) with a matching back cover for each disc mount, and the artwork is high quality.

Special features last for hours and the extras such as scripts and special edition cards are the little things that aren't necessary, but very nice to have. And the episodes aren't just listed, each have their own little preview clip. As you can probably guess, this is a rather hefty box set, but the spine artwork is lovely, so it's worth leaving out. It also serves as a great reminder that, yes, the rest of the series will be released on DVD.

The only flaw (and I find this to be a major one) is the episode chapter selections. Each episode has two chapter selections, so if you just want to skip the opening credits and get right to the action, you can-- but you'll also miss half the episode.

3 out of 5 stars HE-MAN'S SISTER!.......2007-03-09

The show is good but the dvd is bad in a few ways. There is staic in betreen each epersode and one of the epersodes dosn't even show. I sent it back to get a repacement and that one had the same prubums. I then sent it back to get a refund. I guess they all are defected.

5 out of 5 stars Defender of the Crystal Palace.......2007-02-18

Ahhh yes, Sh-Ra. I barely remember running around my house as a youngster whenever the transformation scene played. I thought it would be fun to check out She-Ra again when the best-of disc came out and again I ws hooked...hence this purchase. The plots are funny, and the characters very cute. Gotta love Bo's costume ;)My boyfriend even likes watching, mainly thanks to Glim ;p

Basically it's a great kid's show. No severe violence, such as death or blood. Most foils of evil involve some form of spinning or trap. Those who do get hurt don't bruise, so it would be important to expalin to a youngster how unrealistic it is (but there are flying horses so it's kinda a given).

There is some minor violence so I wouldn't show this to anyone under 4 or 5. But other than that it's cute, and more fanciful than He-Man. It involves moralistic stories about what the "right thing" to do is (i.e. don't lie, don't steal etc). The chicks are drawn reeally well, as my boi would point out, and the other characters are funny imho.

I would definately suggest this title to those who love She-Ra, and those who are new to the series. The quality is great, and the special features were cool.

5 out of 5 stars There's a little bit of She-ra and He-man in all of us.......2007-01-24

This box set is absolutely fabulous! The packaging and designs are beautiful. The shows are just as imaginative, exciting, and fun-to-watch as they were when I was a pre-tween. I especially liked the storywriters commentaries about the development of Etheria, the characters, and the differences with Eternia.

When I was young I loved the story, characters, and artwork. Now as an adult, I can fully appreciate the social and political commentaries that permeate each episode (government corruption, team-work, fighting for ones values, negotiations over violence, love, respect, kindness, and wisdom).

It seems, many years after the shows ended, that we all can still find a little bit of these heros and heroines in all of us. Can't wait for the Volume 2 to be released!

Thank you so much for releasing these timeless classics in such a beautiful manner.

5 out of 5 stars For The Honor Of Greyskull!.......2007-01-22

Finally I can see it for the first time in English and all the episodes.
She-Ra is a female heroine with a great power and lots of lessons for all of us, young and not so young. I am from Mexico and previously I had not been able to watch most episodes, but I have been obssesed with She-Ra most of my life. When I was 12 I claimed in my local video rental store to have lost the video of the Secret of the Sword, then two years ago I found in Amazon.com the VHS version.
My delight in discovering that the series was to be released on DVD knew no bounds, I purchase the 10 best episodes last summer and then discovered He-Man.org and found out about the special variant of the Secret of the Sword and bought it.
I used to watch the series with my little brother and we used to play at being She-Ra and He-Man.
It is a fantastic tale of a young woman who discovers her destiny in wielding a great power for the protection of others. Before she can wield the Sword of Protection and become She-Ra she must overcome a spell tat has made her subservient to the Evil Horde.
When she and He-Man contact the Sorceress of Greyskull and she shows them as infants in their mother's arms I cried too.
When the movie was over my brother and I used to hugh and go play together.
For me She-Ra is the tale of a heroine that showed me to be nice to other people and to appreciate my brother, I can't imagine not having had someone to play with.
The fact that after 20 years I still love every minute of it doesn't bother me, I'm still a little girl at heart who loves cartoons, heroines and especially princess heroines.
Thanks to BCI for reviving my shildhood dreams!
Hurra for The Princess of Power!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful time period & topic, great actors, so-so history lesson.......2007-05-31

I first saw this movie when I was around 12. As with most kids that age, I knew nothing of the historical details. However, this movie so entertained and interested me that I went on to study the English Civil War in far more depth. The more that I learned, the less impressed I was by this film, and its woefully inaccurate abbreviation of history. Now, with degrees and graduate degrees to my name, and having spent time in England in the company of English Civil War re-enactors (one of whom wore and ORIGINAL 400 year old lobster-tail cavalry helmet!), I must credit this movie for helping to spark my subsequent historical interest. That alone is worth a five star rating. To have given justice to the subject of the English Civil War, this would have had to be a mini-series, and not a single 140 minute movie -- but such things were unknown in 1970.
Enjoy the movie for what it is, seek out some good histories to flesh out the details, and let's hope that we live long enough to see some talented and ambitious filmmaker do it right!

4 out of 5 stars Cromwell.......2007-04-19

'Cromwell' is about power, the movie depicts the struggle between
The Parliament and the King... that eventually starts the English Civil War.
King Charles is played superbly by Alec Guinness a thespian of the highest order- (King Charles)is an ineffectual and some may say a weak King, bringing the monarchy to its lowest ebb due to his indecision and the backing of the Catholic over the native Church of England (not Protestant but a REFORMED CATHOLIC church) amazing what we can learn at the movies!
Anyway... Cromwell's new army, wins the Civil war and the Parliment takes its new place at the head of the country.

Richard Harris is good, but somewhat over the top, as the brooding Cromwell, his voice is croaky and at times the Irishman looks all at sea! the musical score is average, well shot and framed... An excellent informing entertainment, a movie well worth watching.

4 out of 5 stars Does History Imitate Fun, or Does Fun Imitate History?.......2007-04-06

I caught this film in the middle on TV several years ago, and liked it so much I finally just had to see the whole thing. It's spellbinding! I'm sure liberties were taken with the actual history, but how many historical films *don't* do that? The gist is still there, and the characterizations are delicious--Richard Harris as a bombastic, larger-than-life Cromwell; Alec Guinness the saintly (in his own mind), unfortunate Charles I; Robert Morley the pompous Manchester. The cast members resemble their characters, and despite the almost Shakespearean delivery, there's no overacting going on. These guys are portraying major historical figures and doing it in a major historical way, and they make it pretty darn memorable too.

The only thing I really dislike is the soundtrack. The incidental music is dated, and some of the music integral to the plot, such as the choruses sung by the marching armies, isn't even in the same cosmos as what 17th-century people would have actually heard. That's why I took a star off, but it's not like it ruins the movie.

If you're interested in the English Civil War, you could do worse than see this film as an introduction. The actors bring the characters to life so vividly that when you read about them later on you'll be going, "Yeah, I *know* him!" For that alone, it's a great contribution, and it's just plain old fun in and of itself. Just be prepared to watch it all the way through, because you won't want to hit the pause button.

4 out of 5 stars Cromwell.......2007-03-14

Star studded film of excellant quality. Kept me interested all the way through. A nice easy way to revisit our history.

4 out of 5 stars simplified masterpiece.......2007-01-12

visually, this is a stunning film. and also a neglected topic. this period of history is usually dismissed for a variety of reasons, typically because Cromwell seems to modern sensibilities as a kind of Taliban-style leader, a moralistic monster, hell-bent on forcing his religious beliefs/moral outlook on a resistant populace. likewise, many of the Puritan leaders seem officious, overbearing and oppressive.
it's also all to easy to lose sight of this: much of Europe's then royalty supported each other to the detriment of their supporting subjects. also easy to miss is this is the time when national identities begin to assert themselves. for all the negativity that's usually been attributed to Cromwell, the man himself wanted nothing more than to return to the England of Elizabeth's time when national safety and security had been toally affirmed with the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
Charles Stuart, on the other hand, seemed the antithesis of all that.
what results is a study in democratic to and fro that reverberates down until today. impossible to forget, undeniably provocative and so ably acted by a tremendous cast. I felt so fortunate to acquire a film that I hadn't seen since it's original release.

This unexpected sequel to the camp-cult favorite Road House delivers much of the same fast-n-furious action as its predecessor, though die-hard fans (and they're out there) might miss the over-the-top dialogue and plot devices that earned the original its reputation. Patrick Swayze, who starred in the first Road House picture, is nowhere to be found in the sequel--instead, it's Jonathan Schaech as a DEA agent with a connection to Swayze's character who comes to the aid of his uncle (Will Patton in a rare non-villainous role), the owner of a Louisiana bar that's come under siege by a local drug dealer (Jake Busey, who chews scenery with vigor). What follows is a barrage of bar brawls and room-wrecking stunts as Schaech takes his rightful place as the world's toughest bouncer. Suffice it to say that if you own the first Road House movie (or at least watched it more than once), you'll find the sequel a worthwhile follow-up. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars loses the feel of the original but still good stuff.......2007-06-19

Its a B movie, but its a well made B movie that entertains, though not quite as much as the first Road House. I expected no relation to the first Road House with this sequal, but there is. Jonathan Schaech plays a DEA agent, who is the son of Patrick Swayze's character from the first Road House. He takes over running the bar for his Uncle (Will Patton) who is in the hospital after getting the beat down from the movie bad guy, played by Jake Busey. The same "3 bar rules" are applied from the first movie. And as things progress, more and more becomes too much in common with the first Road House. I found that ok though, since most of the charcaters and action provided good entertainment for an hour and half.
One thing is for sure, the presence of Swayze is not felt at all in this film from Schaech, who semmed a bit bland. In fact, the whole movie is toned down from the first. But thats not to say there still isn't a good deal of action. Jake Busey, typical B movie actor, actually does a decent job of coming off as a decent villain, though he can seem like an over aged brat at times. One of the best treats is actor Richard Norton, playing the head boss. He is obviously showing signs of aging these days, but manages to still get in a good fight scene and pull of the villain role swiftly.
As for action, don't expect any crazy bar fights like the first Road House, but there are more one on one fights that are quite fun to watch. Schaech gets in a good fight with both Richard Norton and Jake Busey, both about the best scenes in the movie.
If you enjoyed Road House, this sequal is worth checking out. The similarities may be dissapointing, but you get more solid action to add to the fuel.

1 out of 5 stars Watch this for the action, just don't buy it!.......2007-04-21

Roadhouse two is a cute premise, trying to milk the idea of the original movie.

DEA agent Sahne Tanner (Jonathan Schaech) is the son of Dalton from the original film. Many times during this film, his character is told sorry about his father's death. that is the only real connection from this film to the other.

Will Patton's acting is under used as Tanner's Uncle Nate who owns a Louiisana roadhouse on the river, the Black Pelican. Tanner comes to help his Uncle Nate. Jake (Gary's son) Busey plays Wild Bill, the local drug dealer/gangster who wants the Pelican for his own base of operation and will do anything to get it.

The film is filled with action and low on plot. Not really what i call entertainment

SPOILER ALERT (DONT READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO KNOW!)-Busey Character tell Tanner that he killed Dalton, The epic finally battles ensues with the ending we all can see what happened through out the whole movie

Lets say this, I hope there isnt a ROADHOUSE THREE

3 out of 5 stars The Second best movie about Bouncers?.......2006-09-16

Roadhouse has become an inarguable cult classic. It was well made, had some decent actors in it, had some good fight sequences, hot women, and was tongue in cheek funny (whether the latter was intended or not.) Roadhouse 2 is a by-the-numbers sequel in almost every sense. It is basically the same as its namesake only not as good. It was a shame that the film-makers were unable to get Patrick "Dalton" Swayze to commit to making the sequel to reprise his role, if nothing else as a mentor to the next generation of world-famous bouncers. In this era of direct to video sequels of older movies in the attempt to create new "franchises" you could do worse than Roadhouse 2.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Sequel--just don't buy a copy........2006-07-25

This sequel was certainly better than I thought it would be. Will Patton, who plays the brother of Dalton (Pat Swalze) from the original film keeps the sequel together with his excellent acting. The film, however, is just too similiar to the 1st and it kind of loses your interest halfway thru--its so perdictable. The fight scenes are pretty good but any film with Jake Busey in it is just an average B movie---the guy can't act for sure. This film is worth a look--rent it-don't buy it--stick to the original one with better actors.

The Pentagon video is useless because anyone with a photo ID and some free time can get a tour of the Pentagon.

3 out of 5 stars Already Dated.......2003-05-26

These DVD's are already dated! "Inside Air Force One" and "Inside the White House" are both back in the Clinton era, and there is much too much fawning about Bill and Hillary. "Inside the Pentagon" is more recent, however it is well before the Second Gulf War, and the revolutions that that war has seen in the area of freeing a country without destroying its civilian population or destroying its intrastructure. While these DVD's are appropriate for children, they are too dated for most adults.

Image Upstairs Downstairs on a more massive scale. Or, if you can, a serious version of Fawlty Towers set in the 1920s in Manchester's luxurious Grand Hotel. Closed for renovations following World War I, the hotel and its staff face financial ruin, foreclosure, suicide, and infidelity before even reopening its doors to guests in the first episode of the series. When it finally welcomes visitors, guests abound, but so does trouble. This highly acclaimed eight-part story has everything a miniseries requires: suspense, social climbers, financial double-dealing, humor, murder, and semiretired prostitutes.

Written by Queer as Folk author Russell T. Davies, The Grand features an ever-surprising plot propelled by strong characters, their loyalties, rivalries, and revelations. The large and adept cast portrays the hotel guests, staff, and owners. This diverse ensemble re-creates an era when class distinctions between the upper and working classes were all-important. The Grand's doorman acts as a cultural interpreter between the posh owners and the working-class staff. The sets and costumes are done with a remarkable attention to detail that will please both Anglophiles and PBS fans. --Tara Chace

4 out of 5 stars Great Period Miniseries.......2007-03-09

As well as another Stephen Moyer's performance I've really enjoyed this one, which was the point to buy this miniseries and I can say that I am really please whith this purchase. Plus the story is great, it is a shame that Stephen hasn't participated in the second season of The Grand, I would love to watch him in that one too. The surround sound of the DVD is perfect, it puts you into perspective of the scene your watching.

5 out of 5 stars This was sooo good!.......2006-06-06

I purchased The Grand-Series One based purely on Amazon.com reviews and its description as I had never heard of it before. I am happy to say that I was totally entranced in the world of The Grand Hotel and its many visitors and residents.

The Grand follows the Bannerman family as they reopen their luxury Manchester hotel shortly after WWI. Be prepared for wonderful performances, exciting and unpredictable plots, and gorgeous 1920s era costumes and period decor.

The cast is superb and the characters are both complex and interesting. Stephen Moyer who plays Stephen Bannerman is absolutely gorgeous and irresistible in his role; Mark Mcgann as John's mischief-making brother Marcus is similarly excellent. Also, wonderful acting from Tim Healy as the wise, know-it-all porter Mr. Collins, and look for British costume drama veteran Susan Hampshire.

The Grand-Series One is a two-disc set, which contains eight episodes, each running around 50 minutes each. The series is addictive and I watched it in its entirety over the course of two days.

You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Grand Style.......2004-03-26

The Grand is an "Upstairs/Downstairs" type series, set in 1920's, and revolves around the owners of "The Grand Hotel," their staff, and the hotel guests. Just like Upstairs/Downstairs, social station, the war, and family issues are the hot plot topics for this series. The most sympathetic characters are that of the hotel owner John, Charles' fiancee Ruth, and the servants. My only peeve with the series? That its way too short. There are only 8 episodes in the first season set which makes the price a little steep. Also, Unresolved plot threads... Such as the poor drunk girl who had the 'appendicitis' trouble. I wanted to see the villian in that ep get what he deserved. Unfortunately no resoultion. Also...As usual, the poor folks show much more spine than their snobbish and rich 'patrons,' which was a little predictable.

Still, this is an excellent series, sure to delight viewers who also like Upstairs Downstairs.

5 out of 5 stars HIGH DRAMA AT THE GRAND.......2003-11-24

How refreshing to find a drama that so well thought out.The set's look solid and true to the period , the costume's are rich
ley detailed. And the acting is fabulous and heart felt.
The story it self is also true to the era with the long suffering
staff trying hard, to keep the bannerman's and guest's in pride
and pomp. You can sense the class division witch the story play's
on a lot.As some of the staff try to break free and other's just
dream about it.the bannerman's and guest's have not got it easy
with .Mysterious strangers,tragic circumstances,illict affairs,
prostitution and murder. I think i would prefer to be a staff

This is good viewing with strong characters and a good story.

4 out of 5 stars Check into The Grand.......2003-07-01

"The Grand" is certainly addictive -- thanks to the interesting writing and fine performances from all involved. One caveat: Initially, even the villainy is enjoyable, but by the end, the series turns quite dark and disturbing.

My personal favorites among the actors: Tim Healy is excellent as the heart of the hotel; interestingly, as his character becomes a bit looser in "The Grand: Series Two," he becomes less affecting. Mark McGann is an extremely interesting villain -- he manages to keep you wondering if, in fact, there are redeeming qualities in the character. He's a scene stealer, but Julia St. John, as his love interest (and his brother's wife), more than holds her own. Rebecca Callard is extremely appealing as one of the hotel servants. Stephen Moyer invests much depth into his character of the former soldier -- it becomes apparent just how much when you view "The Grand: Series Two," where his character is played by another actor of lesser caliber.

As others have mentioned, you'll soon be hooked and find it hard to stop watching until you have finished the entire series. And you'll be sure to want to check in again for "The Grand: Series Two." But that's the point where you might be somewhat disappointed, and not only because two characters (one mentioned above) are played by different, less-effective actors.

In the initial episodes of the second series, the tone seems off. While the first series managed to feel like drama rather than soap opera, the second dives wholeheartedly into the soapsuds and becomes more episodic. Some characters even seem to act in ways inconsistent with their previous actions. It almost feels as if a new production team had taken over, although that's not the case.

Luckily, the second series hits its stride with the fourth episode and, for the most part, sustains it until almost the very end (with some nifty surprises and plot twists along the way). There's some very enjoyable writing throughout -- great credit goes to Russell T. Davies for staying true to his period and not trying to impose modern sensibilities on his characters.

For example, the character who reveals his gayness is utterly confused and conflicted in a way that seems consistent for an uneducated worker in 1920s Britain; his self-hatred and seemingly unresolvable sense of isolation are never glossed over.

By the end of the second series, it becomes clear, though, why there were only two series of "The Grand." Just about every avenue of development had been explored and there was little ground left to cover with the characters. So, you check out of The Grand generally satisfied with your stay, but feel fine not returning for another.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-05-25

If you like the CrossGen comics, youll like these DVDs. It shows the pictures from the comic books with voice overs and it has some extras. I took one star off because, I would like to seem them make it into an actual cartoon with moving pictures and all, but its still good.

2 out of 5 stars Tae bo let down.......2007-04-23

I regularly do Tae Bo as a way to cross-train. When I saw this DVD, I was excited thinking it would be a fast-paced 30 minute work out. Wrong. Billy seems very disorganized as though he hadn't choreographed the work out ahead of time. With so many other quality Tae Bo workouts out there, I wouldn't suggest wasting your money (or time) on this one.

1 out of 5 stars waste of time.......2006-10-25

I am a huge tae bo fan and bought this thinking it would change up my regular routine. It is very disorganized and you end up waiting around for a long time in-between rounds. Also, Billy Blanks tends to the the same move for two rounds. It gets boring doing the same move for two minutes. I thought it would be a more high-energy/quick-moving workout, but it was a big disappointment. I felt like I didn't get a workout at all.
