A young Rick Schroder makes his cute-as-all-get-out film debut in this 1979 tearjerker from director Franco Zeffirelli. Jon Voight plays Billy Flynn, a former champion boxer now given to drinking, gambling, and raising his son T.J. (Schroder, billed here as Ricky) as best he can. The ups and downs of the devoted codependent pair might be enough movie on their own, but soon enough Annie (Faye Dunaway) shows up and displays a strangely protective interest in T.J. Though the plot jumps around too much to quite hold together, The Champ is certainly affecting, and all three leads take the film so earnestly that somehow it works. Voight is believable both as a boxer and as a well-intentioned screwup of a dad, and Schroder is a fine young actor (and irresistibly adorable). Special DVD features include audio commentary from Jon Voight and Rick Schroder and the documentary Behind the Scenes with the Champ. --Ali Davis

More down-to-earth than Auntie Mame, Driving Lessons imparts the same simple, but enduring message—be yourself. In the directorial debut from screenwriter Jeremy Brock (Mrs. Brown), 17-year-old Ben (Harry Potter's Rupert Grint, sluggish yet sympathetic) lives with his vicar father, Robert (Nicholas Farrell), and pious mother, Laura (Laura Linney doing a passable, but inconsistent British accent), in a tree-shaded London suburb. Soft-spoken Ben writes poems and looks forward to passing his driver's test. When his mother encourages him to get a job, he becomes an assistant to retired actress Evie Walton (Billy Elliot's Julie Walters, hunched up to look elderly). He finds her overbearing at first. Still, Evie is preferable to Laura, who may do volunteer work with her husband's parishioners, including bizarre boarder Mr. Fincham (Jim Norton), but also cheats on him with Reverend Peter (Oliver Milburn) and engages her resentful son in the subterfuge. Then Evie tricks Ben into driving her to Edinburgh for a poetry reading, where he learns to assert himself and she learns to put the dramatics on hold—at least for a few minutes. Ben also loses his virginity to a woman he just met, sending a secondary message some parents might not appreciate (the film's sprinklings of profanity earned it a PG-13). Driving Lessons itself seems stranded between coming-of-age story and character study. Ironically, Farrell gives the most convincing performance as Ben's bird-loving father. Engaging if uneven, this parable about hypocrisy and self-expression might have been more interesting if presented from his perspective. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Product Description

Oscar® nominee Laura Linney (Kinsey) stars as Laura Marshall, an overzealous, evangelical Christian do-gooder who fills her home with down-and-out boarders, including a senile, cross-dressing murderous mute. Desperate to expand his horizons, Laura's shy teenage son Ben (Rupert Grint, of Harry Potter fame) lands a job tending to self-proclaimed "Dame" Evie Walton (Oscar® nominee Julie Walters, Billy Elliot), an over-the-hill actress with the mouth of a drunken sailer and an insatiable lust for life. The battle for Ben's soul begins as Evie shanghais Ben away from his repressive roots and takes him on an adventure that transforms him from boy to man. A winning entry at the 2006 Moscow International Film Festival, Driving Lessons is an experience Stephen Farber of Movieline calls "a delightful coming-of-age story."

4 out of 5 stars A Modern Day Reflection of 'Harold and Maude'.......2007-07-04

DRIVING LESSONS is a little film that sneaks up on you. What at first seems to be a bit of fluffy nonsense comedy British style is at its base a very fine story about coming of age and the needs for significant friendship of both the young and the elderly. Writer Jeremy Brock ('Mrs. Brown', 'Charlotte Gray', 'The Last King of Scotland') here directs his own screenplay and the result is a cohesive, progressively involving tale filled with fascinating and diverse characters, each performed by sterling actors.

Ben Marshall (Rupert Grint, standing firmly on his own as a developing actor post 'Harry Potter' series) is a quiet, plain little poetic seventeen-year-old living with his bird watching Vicar father (Nicholas Farrell) and his obsessive compulsive, rigid, evangelical do-gooder mother (Laura Linney) in a home where 'needy people', such as the murderous cross-dressing Mr. Fincham (Jim Norton), take precedence over family matters: the mother is by the way having an affair with priest Peter (Oliver Milburn), using Ben as her cover!

Sad Ben is among other things attempting to learn to drive a car. His mother is a poor teacher and decides he needs professional lessons AND needs to get a job to help pay for poor Mr. Fincham's needs. Ben follows an ad and meets Dame Eve Walton (Julie Walters), an elderly has-been actress who is as zany as any character ever created. She hires Ben and the fireworks begin. Through a series of incidents, including a camping trip Evie demands they take, the two learn life's lessons missing from each other's natures: Ben learns self respect and self confidence and Evie finds a true friend who will allow her to drop her stagy facade and be the dear human being she has been hiding.

Julie Walters, always offering the finest skills of acting in every character she creates, finds a role like no other here: she is outlandishly wild and lovable. Rupert Grint is exactly the right choice for the challenged coming of age Ben. The chemistry between the two is as tender as that in the classic film 'Harold and Maude'. Laura Linney is as always a superb actress playing a role quite different from her usual repertoire. And the supporting cast is a panorama of fine characterizations. This film is a delightful surprise and one sure to warm the heart and entertain those who love fine writing and direction and acting - and message! Grady Harp, July 07

5 out of 5 stars Where "Dead Poet's Society" Failed,.......2007-06-30

"Driving Lessons" succeeded. However simple the story may be, the messages and character dynamics are brilliant.

The story begins with Ben (played by Rupert Gint), a teenage boy raised by a repressive mother (Laura Linney) and passive father, acquiring a job with an older actress.

The film follows the two leads who play with the "old couple" dynamic; yet underneath, the story is about the actress, "Dame" Evie Walton, releasing the suppressed character of Ben. Throughout the film Ben blossoms as a writer and poet, discovering the good in life while faced with it's brevity.

Definitely worth watching. There's a lot of films which boast a sort of "grandeur" about poetry and youth, but essentially fall short and sometimes even flat. This story does not. It's simple, comedic and sweet without becoming contrived.

5 out of 5 stars Driving Lessons.......2007-05-26

This is definitely a must buy movie. Though it wasn't released in the United States for long, and I had to buy it through the UK amazon, it was worth it. Rupert Grint is amazing! Laura Linney can definitely pull off insane, and Julie Walters is hilarious! If you love to laugh, then you'll love this movie!!

5 out of 5 stars Rupert Grint has grown up!.......2007-05-17

I saw Driving Lessons at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2005, and I fell in love with it! I have always been a fan of Rupert, from the Harry Potter movies, and was excited to see him in another role. This was a great role for him to break out in. The first time he sayd f*ck, i was shocked! but it works incredibly well for the character Ben. There was a twist at the end i wasn't expecting, but I pretty much just wanted to give him a hug when the credits rolled up. I have been waiting for the DVD for AGES, and cannot wait to own it!!

5 out of 5 stars The Champ.......2007-04-11

When I seen The Champ was finally available to buy, I was besides myself with excitement. For I remember every heartbreaking scene from when I used to watch it, over and over again, when I was just a kid. The thrill of watching this film is still with me, 10 years later.

There are no words I can use to articulate quite how wonderful The Champ is. Containing one of, if not thee, greatest child actor performances, from Ricki Schroder. No human being has loved another human being, as much as this kid loves The Champ. The Champ being the character of Billy (Jon Voight), down on his luck, ex champion fighter and current gambler and wanderer, father to little JD (Schroder).

When I was nine, ten, eleven years-old this film reduced me to a distraught state of mind, literally. Heartbreaking, tender, thoughtful, enchanting, it still breaks my heart today.

Warning; The Champ contains the most heart wrenching and deeply painful scene in movie history!!...

4 out of 5 stars THE CHAMP.......2007-03-15

THIS IS ONE GOOOOOOD DVD. IT MAKES YOU LAUGH AND THEN LEAVES YOU CRYING. IT WAS DELIVERED IN GOOD TIME. AND IN GREAT CONDITION.

5 out of 5 stars Great remake of a classic!.......2006-11-08

This film really shines as a great inspirational story for any family. The performances are really what drives this movie. Everyone is in top-notch form (Voight, Dunaway) and Ricky Shroder delivers a break-through job that should have been nominated for an Oscar. Here is a bit of trivia: Apparently Shroder was having a difficult time being able to cry on camera. La Dunaway, always being the true professional that she is, asked the director to give her a few moments alone with the boy. In order to help Ricky prep for his emotional finale to seeing his Champ pass away, Faye grabbed hold of Shroder's baby testicles with her thumb and forefinger and pinched as hard as she could. Just as soon as Ricky yelped out in terrible pain and the tears began to run like a sink faucet, Dunaway whispers in his ear "do the scene" and the director yells "Roll!" That Faye...always helping her fellow actors to give the best performance possible!

5 out of 5 stars The Champ.......2006-03-20

I saw this movie when it first came out. It's just as tear-jerking now as it was then! Ricky Schroeder is the best child actor ever and rips your heart out in several scenes. The whole cast does an awesome job!

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the Best Child Performance Ever Caught on Film.......2006-03-13

I remember seeing this movie in the theater when I was 16. I recall that everybody there was crying by the end. I don't think I've seen a performance by a child star that can rival little Ricky Schroder's effort in this film. This was his first acting job and he stole the show with what was easily an Oscar winning performance. This movie is a remake of an older film by the same title made back in the early 1930's; this remake is superior on all counts. Jackie Cooper, then age nine played the role covered here by Schroder, who turned eight on the set. Wallace Beerey played the title role done here by Jon Voight. The film is about as perfect as any drama could hope to be because it deals so honestly with very real family issues. Especially the love of a father for his son. The events told in the story could happen to anyone. Perhaps that's why it was such a success in the theaters. Performaces by all the actors were simply fantastic, but again Schroder's will leave you stunned. I've never been able to get through this film without tearing up, as it's, unquestionably, one of the most powerfully emotional films ever made.
I highly recommend it to everyone. The DVD has a very insightful audio commentary by both Voight and Schroder that proves the movies true emotional power, and together, they recall special moments that indicate why this film will always stand the test of time. You'll see why the Best Picture Oscar should have gone to this movie, it earned it in every sense of the word.

2 out of 5 stars Education of Sonny Carson.......2007-05-13

I found this movie to be a typical low-budget independent movie. The movie displayed the despair of living in urban America. This movie was the fore-father of movies/cable shows like The Wire, etc.

5 out of 5 stars WHO KILLED LITTLE BOY !!!!!.......2006-11-09

I tell you what I found this movie because I always wondered just where did all the samples from Ghostface Killah's 1st album came from. What I found was this movie and what I learned about the Education of Sonny Carson it was a school of hard knocks. I really enjoed this movie my friends did to. Its was interesting to see how the gangs were almost revered as like heros. During the parade they were just walking and chanting banners and all with a huge following. It's a real movie. It shows the brief celebrity status they received when living that lifestyle and when reality catches up the harsh realization that the glory days are over. This is a blaxplotation film but its not a me against the man type of thing its life that so many to this day still seem to struggle with. This is a welcomed edition to the collection and I highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Gangs of NY - - Circa 1970 and REAL..........2005-10-31

This movie was probably the first of its type. Many "life as a gang member" films came to follow it (especially in the 1980s and 1990s), but none really did so like this one... Most the ones that followed had a tendency to be too "Hollywood Melodramatic"-ish (at times cartoonish, and at other times somewhat preachy.) Without spoiling the ending, though Sonny Carson makes an important decision at the end of the film, the ending is anything but happy... in fact it is often critisized for its apparent "inconclusion", but I disagree... It is what makes the film so great. Almost like a documentary ("120 Blocks from Tiffany's") the film simply tells the story and leaves the big question to be asked and answered by the viewer. Sonny has "graduated" from his training by society and the system... the "happy" days of his violent education are over... but what next ? What is in his future ? Isn't everyone promised the American dream??? Sonny walks the straight path, but the odds still seem stacked against him. It would seem to me that if the film has been understood the viewer should leave it not demanding to know what happened to SONNY himself, but rather wondering about the plight of all the other SONNYs in the world... what society did to create the situation and what society or the communities are failing to do to resolve it ? Then we must debate whether Sonny's future is really in his own hands and if he does have a fair chance to make a life for himself. This, I assume was might have been the director's intention.

Though fans of 70s urban action type films will love the music and on-scene locations (and notice a few actors... for example the cop from the MAC and the gang leader from THE WARRIORS) beware, this is not just another 70's urban action thriller... it is an urban coming of Age Story, starting from Sonny's graduation from Jr. HS to his "education" (via the streets, the system) and ultimately jail, and his sad graduation into a lonely and questionable adulthood. Memorable and unique !

5 out of 5 stars A MUST SEE - REAL PEOPLE - REAL STORY.......2005-01-18

I love this movie. I bill myself as a hip hop/blackploitation film historian, but forgot about this classic. Only thru reading someone's top 10 movie's for forgotten Movies did I see this title and then ordered this movie. I loved this movie so much that I gave the vhs to a former gang member from Los Angeles (He loved it, and he is passing that around) and I ordered the dvd. I love the director and the real Sonny Carson doing commentary. They tell a grim tell of what the whole filming experience was like. They give you stories of Joe Dancer and the rest that only the directors commentary would provide. Anybody from Chicago over 40,Los Angeles over 40, New York will understand this experience. This is one of my new favorite movies to watch. I love the whole movie from beggining to end. I am 43 years old and see how hip hop, rap, gangsta behavior orginated from this classic. Movies have away of influencing the times. The Education of Sonny Carson has a way of influencing culture. (jocisoo7@aol.com for email me, I would love to have emails from new friends and we can share all of our street movie loves. peace and cheap hair grease. ( I grew up in Robert Taylor Holmes on the south side of chicago and migrated to Long Beach california to exscape gangs and wind up in the heart of west coast gang explosion of the 70's and 80's.

Grab your dreams, come out of your corner and step out swinging. The double Oscar winner The Champ is ready to take on the world! With feet planted, chin tucked and its heart unashamedly on its sleeve, this original father-son tale (remade in 1979) remains one of the all-time great tearjerkers. In an Academy Award-winning Best Actor performance, burly Wallace Beery - he of the fog-cutter voice and gruff warmth - plays the washed-up prizefighter making a ring comeback to provide for his son. Nine-year-old Our Gang comedy star Jackie Cooper is Dink, as devoted a son as ever stood in any man's corner. Laugh. Cry. Cheer. Cry some more. Even as The Champ breaks your heart, it heals the spirit.

5 out of 5 stars The Champ (1931).......2007-06-21

Vidor's gushy tale of devotion--about a big bruiser's bottomless well of love for his charismatic kid and number-one fan--is unabashedly sentimental by today's standards, but it still gets the tear ducts flowing. The aptly named Beery, with his tugboat voice and ruffled mien, won a much-deserved Oscar, while Cooper's wrenching, precocious Dink still remains the "Our Gang" star's most unforgettable role. (Beery and Cooper had such a fabulous rapport they went on to star in two more films together.) With its gritty look and a knockout weepy finale, Vidor's "The Champ" is an undisputed winner.

5 out of 5 stars A Story About True Devotion.......2007-01-10

I enjoy watching The Champ movie because it is well acted in both the father and son roles. Wallace Beery gives a convincing performance as a despairing father who was driven to drinking and gambling but cared much for his son. He was aware that he had become a "has been" in the sport of boxing and was desperate to find a way to support himself and his child. Though Andy Purcell (Beery) had allowed these vices into his life, his love and sensitivity toward his son came through brilliantly in the generosity he showed to keep the boy happy.

Purcell's son Dink, played by Jackie Cooper, was completely devoted to his father. Dink was being raised in a less-than-desirable environment and had adopted some crude ways but, in spite of everything, was charming, friendly, and caring to his father and to friends. Though Andy disappointed him on a few occasions in the movie, Dink's loyalty and love for him came shining through to the very end when the boy witnessed the death of his father.

The story, acted out, brings tears, sentiment, and evokes tender feelings for both Andy who wanted so much to make his son happy and for Dink who remained faithful to his father through it all. The honesty in Dink's character provides a moral lesson and example for children today to stay faithful and to love and honor their parents, no matter what may happen.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2006-11-21

I was very familar with the reputation of the movie "The Champ" but never saw it until last night. I was prepared for a film heavy on sentimentality, a fair amount of action (in the ring), and a cute child actor. I got all of that but in a better package than I had expected. Although I was hesitant to give the movie a 5 Star rating, I did so on the exceptional acting from the two stars.

I have seen a number of other films with Wallace Beery and his character is generally the same in every movie; a sort of Victor McLaughlin with a lower voice. He's quite the likable character but what impressed me the most was the many times he spoke his lines as though they were an "in-character" ad lib offering. As I noticed those scenes, I saw others in which he seemed to speak as though from a script. However, his "aw shucks" style never varied and the way the words flowed seemingly spontaneously is probably the reason he won the Best Actor Oscar for "The Champ".

Beery had real competition for that award from young Jackie Coogan. I was equally impressed with his acting and I felt that there were parts of the movie that the director may have turned him loose to do his own ad-libbing. His emotions were very effective and never overdone, even at the end. The scene where he discovers that the drunk being brought to jail in the paddy wagon is actually his father is outstanding. There were many other noteworthy scenes of his as well. The supporting cast is rather standard fare and serves only to fill in the roles necessary for Beery and Coogan to strut their stuff.

The plot is rather predictable and you could sense the ending almost from the beginning. Much of the plot is there to enhance our appreciation of this father/son relationship. At times the scenes let us know how bad a father Beery is while other scenes (often the same ones) let us know how devoted a son Coogan is. I usually succumb to a good tear-jertker but "The Champ" left me more inspired by the acting than teary-eyed from the plot. Either way, this is a worthwhile movie to see.

4 out of 5 stars a film that pulls no punches.......2006-09-06

the real one, not the bathetic remake with jon voight and icky schroeder. this stars wallace beery as the washed-up middleweight ex-champ (boy, does THAT strain credulity for the eyes!) and jackie cooper as the young son who is the adult figure to the man-child. both leads give great performances, and although it was beery who walked away with the oscar it was actually cooper who deserved it more (tho god forbid the academy should ever deem a kid actor worthy of such!) the movie clearly resonated with its depression audience, and holds up well today. its the rare tear jerker that stays away from mawkishness.

5 out of 5 stars A Knockout.......2006-08-01

It would be easy to dismiss "The Champ" as merely a manipulative tear-jerker. Possibly, but if you're going to be manipulated at least have it done by the best. There is nothing slick here. Director King Vidor vividly captures the desolate seediness of Depression-era Tijuana. The film's climactic fight scene is very realistic. Wallace Beery won the Oscar for his role as the Champ but he could very well have shared it with young Jackie Cooper(not even nominated) as his wise beyond his years son,Deke. The chemistry is dynamic between the lovably grizzled Beery and the heart-rending Cooper. The formula here is timeless so the story doesn't date in the least. You could remake it today and I have no doubt it would still work. Which leads me to the 1979 remake with Jon Voight and Ricky Schroder. Despite the generally negative buzz that surrounded it at the time it's not that bad.

The self-proclaimed People's Champion, a wrestling character who's struck gold by essentially being a good guy who just can't help but act like a heel, is celebrated in this DVD that packages some of the Rock's notable matches with an enormous helping of his legendary verbal abuse. The Rock's rise to prominence in the World Wrestling Foundation is shown by the inclusion of showdowns with the Undertaker and the Big Show. The Rock's oddly comical pairing with Mick Foley as "the Rock and Sock" connection is also given a fair amount of screen time. Segments show him at home in Miami (where as Dwayne Johnson he played for the University of Miami football team), visiting his favorite barbershop (where he claims he learned some of his signature catch phrases), and shopping for his trademark flashy shirts at his favorite stores. He is also seen making a number of personal appearances, from book signings to throwing out the first pitch at a major league baseball game. If this sounds like the production is light on actual wrestling content, it is, but those who can't get enough of the hottest character in wrestling will find plenty of opportunity to "smell what the Rock is cookin'." --Robert J. McNamara

1 out of 5 stars Hmph, talk about egostistics when you never know that the Rock was one of them now........2006-10-18

Pathethic the Rock became after he went to make movies & left WWE to make his first 4 films that, "FAILED" to make extra buyrates. I agree with that guy that said,"If the Rock didn't "SOLDOUT", then why isn't he wrestling then?" Well little man, I'll tell you why, you listen here to my friend with the 2 stars. It's because like everybody else just like Vince McMahon, MONEY!! Thats the reason why because Rock wants easy paychecks for his so called good performances & thats just totally messed up right there man. I also agree with that guy below next to the two star that said,"If the Rock actually said about how wrestling is good in his DVD, then why doesn't he get his fata** back in the ring & kick some a** for Pete's sake! Yeah, he lied to all of us when he so called said he loved wrestling but that wasn't the case though was it? Also yep, the Rock is fat in person & actually seen his pictures in person with his fata** gut hanging out of course. But you know what though, when the Rock & if he decides to come back to wrestling. He should appologize to us fans & kiss our candya**es! Yeah Rock, took that out of your playbook, oh well chump.

I agree w/the kid below me.I agree w/just about everything he did say.The Rock did "sellout".And actually hes been wrestling since 1996/ most of 1997 except for the summer/1998/1999/2000/some of 2001 except for the summer/on and off 2002 then gone after SummerSlam 2002/then the early portion of 2003 and 2004 so thats a sum of about 63/64 months. Then half the time he did "wrestle" he just talked an blabbed his mouth and being real popular w/the ladies, but for the guys they hated him just like myself.Just a pretty boy chump! And despite the fact that he could cut good interviews and do good promos his wrestling ability wasn't on an par of someone like Bret Hart or Sting or h*ll even Goldberg to say the least. The Rock will most likely contunie doing movies and contiuning to fail(like Be Cool,Walking Tall,Rundown)and continuing to belive into his own hype. But the rOCKS best days(if he ever had any besides running his trap)are far far behind him!

And Amazon.com please post my review when I send it,people should hear other peoples opinions when they write if caause if youre gonna write an review and then not get it posted then why waste your time writing for nothing?

1 out of 5 stars If the Rock didn't "SOLDOUT", then why isn't he wrestling then?.......2006-05-08

Yeah, that stunned y'all didn't it? Movies in my opinion has nothing to do with wrestling back then. If Rocky hadn't been influenced with the movies, he would still been wrestling today, capeash? I was Rock's hardcore fan once but then I gave up on him ever since he wasn't heard from again to WWE! So I went to the news & it said that WWE & Rock parted ways because Rock was mad he didn't get a new contract, boo hoo! I also have learned experience that Rock wasted his WWE contract by going through movies again & again & not wanting to comeback wrestling! Face it, Rock isn't coming back to wrestling, he's through, he's finished, & he's definately retired from wrestling & doesn't deserve to be in the Hall Of Fame! Whats it been like 1997-2003! 6 years of wrestling & thats it, he's definately ain't no legend & his wrestling always sucked anyways as he's always gets his a** whipped by other top dudes & hardly ever fights back. He even gets embarassed when he gets pinned by Spike Dudley, Stephanie McMahon, Test, Stevie Richards, Hurricane, Trish, Jazz, a little midget, Ric Flair, Faarooq, JBL, OJ, Funaki, Hardyz, Dudleyz, & other below guys he's never beaten before. I can even fight better than the Rock & I know a lot of martial arts more than him & man would I whip his a** easily. Thats right, The Rock is soft. So why isn't back at wrestling? I'll tell you why, he's chickens*** because he probably seen the Spirit Squad aka (F*gg*t Squad) been dominating the top guys by cheating of course by McMahons but they don't have cheat to do that to the Rock cause Rock is to handle & can't fight at all! His stupid a** DVD tells about how wrestlings been good & all. If he'd actually said that then why don't he get his fat a** back in the ring & kick someone's a** for Pete's sake! Speaking of fat a**, I also heard that ever since the Rock was at the movies & not with WWE the whole time. The Rock hasn't been working out lately & started to lose a lot of muscle mass. Hey, it isn't my fault he wasn't back in WWE, & it isn't my fault that the Rock is, A FAT MAN! WHY DON'T YOU RETURN AS RIKISHI WHILE YOU'RE AT IT, THAT'LL BE SWEET!

5 out of 5 stars THE ROCK WAS ONE AWSOME STAR!.......2006-02-21

I hope he gives up Movie Production-or goes unsucessful, heck even if he does go unsucessful-he will still be a Millionaire so he ain`t got anything to lose.he is an alright actor-But better wrestler.Unlike most WWE superstars today-he could wrestle.John Cena is an alright wrestler, alright tras-talker-but he will never be as good as The Rock,Cena is a c-rap rappa.
There is no chance in h£ll that Hulk Hogan can wrestle as he did in the 80`s,but Stone Cold,The Rock,Kurt Angle and Triple H-can still go at iy.there is still HHH and Angle-But they need Rocky and Steve Austin aswell-that way WWE PPVs and so on will be great and worthwhile.
WWE is weak at the moment-that has given TNA an operatunity to rise faster-and they took it-new TV deals,a touring plan, and so on.
bye.

Product Description

The 2005 Chicago White Sox were a team in the truest sense of the word. Call it what you will; small ball, smart ball, or grinder ball, the White Sox' combination of outstanding starting pitching, deep bullpen, airtight defense, and ability to manufacture runs proved to be an unbeatable combination that brought the team it's first World Championship since 1917. Going wire to wire to win the A.L. Central division, this team set a major-league record by having a lead in 37 straight games to begin a season. This is the story of their triumph ? starting in the off-season when general manager Ken Williams put the championship team together to the history making World Series. Through out the season they maintained an attitude of no matter win or lose, the Sox would do it as team. Narrated by Ken Harrelson.

4 out of 5 stars A complement of the 2005 World Series DVD.......2007-03-16

There are two highlight DVD's for the White Sox in 2005. One is the World Series 2005 released by the MLB official and the other is this. The major difference between these two is that this one is more focused on the regular season while the other one is focused on the postseason. So they are complements for each other.

The special feature in this DVD is also worth mentioning. It has an introduction to the players. This is what you can see on the big screen before the game starts in the home ballpark. Another special feature is the '59 Go Go Sox song with the footage. It is not easy to grab this song on the website and I am glad they put it here. Some of Sox advertisements on TV are also collected here. The parade for the Sox and another compact highlight film are in the fourth and last.

I am glad I have both of the DVD's. It is always delightful to watch the 2005 White Sox film. I think White Sox fans will love it and put this DVD in their collections.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding retrospective of the entire 2005 championship White Sox season.......2006-04-24

I was fortunate to attend the premiere of this DVD back in December at the Arie Crown Theater (as well as have my picture taken with the World Series trophy!!!), and it was well worth making the trip back to Chicago. This is an awesome DVD covering the entire 2005 White Sox season from Spring Training, their amazing start out of the gate, interleague highlights, their dominance heading into August, facing a nerve-wracking late season challenge from the Cleveland Indians, ultimately ending the regular season on a winning note which carried over throughout a stunning and memorable post-season. The presentation is centered around the Sox's successul "GRINDER RULES" marketing concept, longtime White Sox broadcaster Hawk Harrelson provides the narration, and there are interview clips featuring White Sox fans sprinkled throughout (one of whom was also featured in the Major League Baseball "I Love This Game!" commercials which aired during the post-season). Because this DVD covers the full season, it's a wonderful companion to the 2005 World Series DVD; a few portions of highlights and player interviews actually appear in both DVDs, but there's nothing wrong with that at all. DVD bonus features include the scoreboard presentation that appeared as the White Sox took the field in Game 2 of the World Series (the music from "Pirates of the Caribbean" was not used, however fans will be happy to hear AC/DC's "THUNDERSTRUCK" as the players are introduced), the scoreboard video for "Let's Go Go-Go White Sox" by Captain Stubby and the Buccaneers (mixing 1959 and current highlights), a month-by-month highlight feature (which appeared during the victory parade and rally), various highlights from the parade (small clips instead of a full presentation, but still very nice), and a collection of White Sox GRINDER RULES ads from throughout the season. White Sox fans have been starved for a championship for nearly a century, and this DVD (along with the World Series DVD and the box set) are worthy keepsakes from a thrilling season of White Sox baseball.

4 out of 5 stars A GREAT DOCUMENTARY OF THE GREATEST TEAM AND THE GREATEST SEASON........2006-03-17

This is an excellent keepsake for all true Sox fans and even tag-alongs.
If you love baseball and know the essence of the true game as it should be played, then this is the DVD for you.
SOX PRIDE chronicles the 2005 Chicago White Sox season from pillar to post, from Spring Training to the World Series Parade and Rally in the greatest city on earth.
Narrated by Sox TV announcer Hawk Harrelson, the DVD especially focuses on the regular season, one of the most exciting ever. This aspect of the season is not as thoroughly covered by the World Series DVD.
The coverage of the World Series games themselves is very brief, perhaps the only fault with this DVD.
The Bonus Features section is very good too, containing the "Grinder Rules" advertisements, music-enhanced extra highlights and other brief nuggets.
SOX PRIDE is the perfect companion to the World Series highlights DVD, if not superior in most regards.
Way to go Comcast!
Even Cubs fans might like this DVD, as it portrays a reality that they can only dream of...
HA-HA! We got there first!!!!

I didn't know all the fighters, but most of the matches were pretty action packed. Always fun to watch Chuck Liddell, Vanderlei Silva, Vitor Belfort, Guy Mezger, Igor Vovchanchyn, Dan Henderson, Gary Goodridge, and Gilbert Yvel. This and Cold Fury were two of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Pride event.......2003-05-19

This Pride event has been overlooked by many (probably because it doesn't contain a Gracie or Sakuraba fight), but it showcases many of the greatest fighters in all of mixed martial arts. If nothing else, buy the event for the Chuck Liddell vs. Guy Mezger fight. It's a great fight from 2 of the best light heavyweights in the world and 2 of the best strikers in the world.

The lineup also contains Igor Vovchanchyn, Gilbert Yvel, Kazuyuki Fujita, Vanderlei Silva, Gary Goodridge, Vitor Belfort, Dan Henderson, and Heath Herring. Most of their matches aren't as exciting to watch as they could be, but they're good.

4 out of 5 stars Pride 14. Another great show put on by DSE.......2002-04-23

Pride 14 is a very up and down show. There are some great knockouts, some excellent submissions, and two distance fights.

    (not in correct order)

    1) Antonio Schrembi X Johil De Olivera - a great graplling match with multiple submission attempts.

    2) Pele Landi X Daijiru Matsui - Brazilian superstar Pele finally makes his Pride debut. Can he handle the never say die attitude of the Matsui?

    3) Chuck Lidell X Guy Mezger - Lidell makes his Pride debut in a back and forth match that ends in a huge knockout.

    4) Gary Goodridge X Valentijn Overeem - short yet sweet match. Wait till you see Goodridge's anticts after the match!

    5) Vitor Belfort X Heath Herring - a very contraversially decision. Who really wins this fight?

    6) Akira Shoji X Dan Henderson - Dan returns to the ring to fight the second never say die fighter from Japan, Shoji. One man in this fight gets PUNISHED!

    7) Vanderlei Silva X shungo Oyama - Silva returns after KOing Sakuraba. Can he keep up his Japanese winnings?

    8) Igor Vovchanchyn X Gulbert Yvel - In what should be a striking match-up, this fight surprizingly hits the ground and ends in submission.

    9) Yoshihiro Takayama X kazuyuki Fujita - a surprizingly good match-up. Both men show a ton of heart.

Overall, a pretty darn good show. Unfortunetly, there were a couple slow spots in the matches that for the most, can be overlooked.

2 out of 5 stars No classics, but not the worst movies ever made.......2006-10-18

BLOOD OF THE DRAGON-this is the only movie I thought was actually worth seeing on this DVD. The movie is made just for Jimmy Wang Yu and while it is extremely cheap, it still provides quite a bit of fun. Just like Master of the Flying Giullotine, the movie is given an odd touch with rock music in the credits and mixed throughout the film. While it didn't work like Guillotine, it does add to the movie. Basically Wang Yu plays a guy who has to help a kid give a list of names to a leader of rebels so that the government won't kill him. Lung Fei plays his usualy villian role very well but unfortunately he is only a small type of henchman. The whole movie is a build up to the final fight where a whole bunch of people come to take out Jimmy. It is spectacular and very well choreographed for 1973. There are also a couple of very funny parts where you can clearly see the spear not going through and just does not really close at all. I only saw it 4 times though and it did not detract from Jimmy Wang Yu being one of the baddest and coolest dudes ever on screen.

Picture quality is very bad but not unwatchable. I give it a 2.5/5 but lean more towards a 3 than a 2.

CHAMP VS. CHAMP-Dragon Lee and Godfrey Ho collaberate for an almost watchable kung fu movie. It is very odd that I actually made it all the way through this as Dragon On Fire was the only other Lee/Ho movie that I accomplished this. There is one really good fight, the second to last. I think it was Eagle Han but they manage to put together enough kicks and well timed moves to make it look pretty good. Dragon Lee also puts on a few decent kicks though like Van-Damme, he doesn't show any real power, he just sticks his leg up there. The final fight is just godawful as they chose a pretty large guy to fight Dragon. The villians all look as corny as normal but Dragon's master is somewhat likeable.

Picture quality is kind of bad but pretty watchable. I give this movie a surprising 1.5/5 and may have to lean towards a 2.

BLOODFIGHT-this is truly one of the most unwatchable movies ever. Yusuaki Kurata is in a tournamnet at the start at eh movie and throws some people around. We seriously don't get another action sequence form him until the final fight with Bolo that I almost turned off. But after spending 90 minutes watching it, I decided to stick out the last 5 minutes. Wow I was majorly dissapointed. If you are looking for a movie that does not explain ANYTHING, has Simon Yam as the main martial artist in the film, and has a white guy with a jean jacket and sunglasses as the main bad guy throughout the film, then you may want to check this out.

This movie by far has the best picture quality on the DVD. It starts off widescreen then turns to full 5 minutes in. Still pretty good quality, just not a watchable movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great purchase for old school kung fu fans..........2005-06-17

If this was more expensive, my ratings would be much lower. But for $6 (here or at other places), this is a great purchase.

Blood of the Dragon is one of Wang Yu's better films. Not his best, but quite entertaining. He plays the Dragon, the title (I assume) comes from the fact he gets quite badly injured by the other main character - who is actually a good guy. The other character has a "Magic" sword - magic because it has a hidden dagger in it. His weapon is actually pretty cool and well used in the film. Wang Yu uses a spear, and this is one of the few movies where a spear actually looks cool.

Anyway, the film is quality, with a good amount of bloody violence and a large, long (about 20 minute) pretty well-choreographed final fight (ironically, the secondary lead character with the magic sword gets a better fight). This is also the oldest movie I've seen that has a "whip sword".

The film has its boring parts, but stick through em. On second and third viewings, skip them.

Bloodfight I didn't manage to watch. It's pretty bad. But it might be enjoyable if you like the style of film (modern day tournament). Bolo Yeung is indeed the villain in the film.

Champ Against Champ was the big surprise for me. Much better than I expected. Not terrible like many other Dragon Lee films, but quite enjoyable. It concerns a lead character who is with a group of people that get attacked. The main villain hits him with a poison dart, which should have killed him but instead just leaves him missing one leg below the knee (the dubbing here plays into the entertainment - his doctor, an elderly Chinese man, has a Kentucky accent). Not letting that slow down his quest for revenge, he fashions a solid metal leg to use as a weapon in kung fu, and he sets off.

The fights are surprisingly good, and fast paced. There's also occasional parts which are unintentionally funny, adding more to the movies score. Like early in the film, the lead's father (or teacher, I forget), an elderly guy, is watching everyone fight and is quite happy with how it is going, and then a leg comes in from the right side of the screen and hits him in the face HARD. Funny stuff.

There's also the metal leg. Sometimes when he does a sort of super kick (a bit like when Wang Yu's one-armed boxer does his finishing punches, but better) he sends people flying. One guy gets knocked into a tree, others just fly back, and some do this cool thing where they slide really far along the ground. Cool stuff.
