This 1989 drama penned by pre-Basic Instinct screenwriter Joe Eszterhas is a powerful tale of family identity and loyalty threatened by a ghost from the Third Reich. Jessica Lange stars as a Chicago criminal attorney whose beloved immigrant father (Armin Mueller-Stahl, in his American film debut) is accused of once having been a monstrous SS officer for Hitler. While Lange's character does a good job defending the old man in court against witnesses who charge him with numerous unspeakable acts, her own certainty that he is innocent slowly crumbles, leaving her with a horrifying personal dilemma. Directed by Costa-Gavras (Z), the film displays some of his distracting tendency toward unnecessarily broad storytelling, but Eszterhas's script is disciplined and moving, and Lange and Mueller-Stahl are stunning in their depiction of a loving relationship deeply shaken by history. --Tom Keogh
Description
Music Box provides celebrated director Costa-gavras another opportunity to weave a story of nail-biting suspense with frightening political overtones. In this intense courtroom thriller, Chicago attorney Ann Talbot (Jessica Lange) agrees to defend her Hungarian immigrant father mike Laszlo (Armin Mueller-Stahl) against accusations of heinous war crimes committed 50 years earlier. As the trial unfolds, Ann probes for evidence that will not only establish his innocence, but also lay to rest her own agonizing doubts about his past. When a hospitalized witness is suddenly located in Budapest, the trial moves to her father's homeland. Here crucial testimony plus Ann's personal investigation lead to astonishing results.

Exclamations of religious awe are in order. Legendary and long sought-after, this live Led Zeppelin collection is nothing less than the rock music equivalent of the Holy Grail. Quite simply, this is what all the fuss was about.
Given that they were the biggest band in the world, Zeppelin were notoriously camera-shy in their heyday. Their official filmic legacy until now has been just the fascinating but flawed The Song Remains the Same. While this new set presents some previously unseen footage from the same 1973 Madison Square Garden gigs, its real wonders lie in the earlier (1970) Royal Albert Hall footage and the later Earls Court (1975) and Knebworth (1979) concerts. Everything here looks and sounds new-minted, thanks to painstaking restoration and remastering of both audio and visual sources, a Herculean labor of love on the part of co-producer Dick Carruthers working hand-in-glove with Jimmy Page. Trawling through thousands of yards of previously unseen film and unheard tape recordings--some with missing visuals, some with missing audio--Page and Carruthers have chosen only the best possible footage available. They were also at pains to make the segments segue seamlessly so that the viewer is treated to what feels like a continuous concert--just sample the transition from a grainy Super 8 "Immigrant Song" (Sydney, 1972) to "Black Dog" at MSG.
Highlights? It's not hyperbole to say that every powerhouse minute of this collection (some 230 minutes of concert footage plus another hour and a half of extra DVD material) is a rare musical and visual treat. But hearing Page's violin bow work on "Dazed and Confused" in DTS or Dolby 5.1 is an experience not soon forgotten. --Mark Walker

Sons of the DesertAmazon.com
For one-stop convenience, you can't beat this handy compilation of Laurel & Hardy classics. Although it's modestly priced and packaged, this DVD packs plenty of extras along with Stan & Ollie's finest feature and several of the comedy duo's best-loved "talkie" shorts. Sons of the Desert (1933) is the crown jewel in any L&H collection, and with Charley Chase as their stellar comedy costar, the boys reached the pinnacle of their unique partnership, playing a pair of Fez-wearing "Sons of the Desert" sneaking off to a convention in Chicago, but their wives discover the ruse with hilarious results. For L&H fans, it simply doesn't get any better than this, although 1932's "The Music Box" shares equal status--and a 1932 Oscar® for Best Comedy Short--in the L&H pantheon. The remaining shorts on the disc ("Another Fine Mess," "Busy Bodies," and "County Hospital") were produced during the prime of Stan & Ollie's sound-era success (1930-33), each boasting their own timeless bits and flawless routines. Abundant laughs are virtually guaranteed. Most of the bonus material pays tribute to legendary comedy producer Hal Roach, who first partnered Stan & Ollie in 1926. A film-clip tribute includes interviews with comedy greats like Mel Brooks and Steve Allen, and on-screen articles explore Roach's career in greater detail. A "then and now" photo tour provides an historic tour of Roach Studio locations in Culver City, California, and text biographies are provided for Roach, Laurel, and Hardy. In addition to the films themselves (which never looked or sounded better), these extras make this Laurel & Hardy DVD a perfect choice for old and new fans alike. --Jeff Shannon

Rush - Replay [3 DVD/CD Box Set]
Starring: Rush Manufacturer: Island / Mercury ProductGroup: DVD Binding: DVD Similar Items:

Amazon.com
While Pink Floyd's widely popular Pulse ranked as one of the bestselling DVDs of 2006, Rush: Replay x 3 is a similarly praiseworthy treasure-trove that's geared more for long-time Rush fans with a working knowledge of the band's evolution. New fans and late-blooming converts are just as likely to enjoy this three-concert package (compiled from previously available VHS releases from the 1980s), but it's the die-hard devotees of Canada's premiere prog-rock power trio who'll get the most from this epic-scale, remastered DVD package. Particularly welcome here are the miniature reproductions of the official programs from each of the tours featured here: "Exit Stage Left" (1981), "Grace Under Pressure" (1984) and "A Show of Hands" (1987-88). With tour-diary notes by the band's illustrious percussionist and co-founder Neil Peart, and often humorous personnel profiles and equipment list by Peart, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and bassist/synth player and vocalist Geddy Lee, these handy booklets offer both tour-related nostalgia and successive glimpses into the band's creative process. Lavishly illustrated, they're also fascinating as visual records of the band's on-stage look, album designs, and related materials. As presented here (as opposed to earlier releases on VHS and laserdisc), the concerts are intended to complement the same live recordings (with some variations in playlists) that were previously released on CD, and the "Grace Under Pressure" CD, included here as a special-bonus fourth disc, is an all-new release exclusive to this package. If you own them all (and what self-respecting Rush fan wouldn't?), you'll have a near-complete collection of these pivotal performances. Both "Exit" (recorded at The Forum in Montreal, Quebec) and "Grace" (Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto) have been re-edited to an even hour apiece, while "A Show of Hands" (National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, England) clocks in at 90 minutes. While they lack the visual splendor of Pulse, each concert offers an equal serving of highlights, notably "The Trees" and "Xanadu" (on "Exit"), "The Spirit of Radio" and the muscular medley of "YYZ/The Temples of Syrinx/Tom Sawyer/Vital Signs" (on "Grace"); and the stunning Alex Lifeson showcase "La Villa Strangiato" (on "A Show of Gands"). The latter also includes an obligatory and always-impressive Neil Peart drum solo (on "The Rhythm Method"), and while the original video source results in occasionally murkey image quality (as also happened with "Grace Under Pressure" director David Mallet on Pulse), there's no doubt that the 5.1-channel Dolby Digital remastering (supervised by Lifeson and Mike Fraser) represents a substantial improvement in overall sound, especially for those with DTS decoders. For those who think a little Rush goes a long way, Replay x 3 will probably qualify as overkill, but true fans will be ecstatic despite the absence of certain previously available material or any backstage features that would allow a more intimate glimpse of prog-rock's most enduring practitioners. What's not here is regrettable; what is here is fantastic. --Jeff Shannon

There is a bounty of superb material here, with watershed videos from some of the biggest acts of the past twenty years (Metallica, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Madonna) as well as from lesser-knowns (Eels, Mirwais, David Sylvian, Herbert Gronemeyer). Beyond the videos, extras include commercials, beautifully-produced booklets for each director, and an exhaustive selection of documentary shorts. When future generations debate the artistic merit of the music video, this is where they'll start.

Vol. 4: Work of Director Mark Romanek
Artists who've worked with him describe Mark Romanek as "meticulous" and "demanding." Yet, the biggest names in the business have clamored to work with the mercurial helmer, because they know he'll make them look good: Madonna ("Rain"), No Doubt ("Hella Good"), etc. Along the way, the Grammy winner has been behind some of the world's most famous--and infamous--videos. On the groundbreaking side, there's Lenny Kravitz's exhilarating "Are You Gonna Go My Way," which made the musician a star in one fell swoop. On the controversial side, there's Fiona Apple's teasing "Criminal," Nine Inch Nails' macabre "Closer," and Jay-Z's apocalyptic "99 Problems"--the latter two in director's cut editions. In another class entirely, is Romanek's heartbreaking video for Johnny Cash's "Hurt." More than a promo, it's an elegy for a legend. Despite an interview with Robin Williams, this collection otherwise overlooks Romanek's features, One Hour Photo and Static.
Vol. 5: Work of Director Jonathan Glazer
British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer began by directing pop promos and advertisements before transitioning into features. His video style is crisp and clean, yet vaguely menacing. There's always more going on than meets the eye--a quality carried over into his films. Like Kubrick, he's partial to Steadicams and empty hallways. Massive Attack's "Karmacoma" even features twins straight from The Shining, while Blur's "The Universal" cops from A Clockwork Orange, so he's not exactly shying away from the influence. Glazer's commercial style, on the other hand, is more wide-ranging, less easily identifiable. His ambitious ads for Guinness, Levi's, etc. bring out his playful side in a way the videos do not. Interestingly, oddball actor Denis Lavant (Beau Travail) shows up twice, in the creepy clip for UNKLE's "Rabbit in Your Headlights" and the "Last Orders" spot for Stella Artois. This Director's Series edition also features excerpts from Sexy Beast and Birth.
Vol. 6: Work of Director Anton Corbijn
Known as much for his photography as his videos, Anton Corbijn has produced some of rock's most memorable images. Long associated with Depeche Mode and U2 (that's his iconic shot on the cover of Joshua Tree), the Dutch director has worked with a diverse array of acts, including Joy Division ("Atmosphere"), Nirvana ("Heart-Shaped Box"), and Metallica ("Hero of the Day"). This collection captures over 20 years of wit and style, with influences ranging from surrealism, expressionism, and elegant European auteurs like Fritz Lang, Wim Wenders, and Ingmar Bergman (especially The Seventh Seal). Like many of the best video makers, Corbijn takes his cues more from the music and personality of the artists than the lyrics. The striking video for David Sylvian's "Red Guitar," for instance, features the singer, an old man, and a young boy--no red guitars anywhere. That about sums up Corbijn: often slick, occasionally bizarre--always unpredictable.
Vol. 7: Work of Director Stéphane Sednaoui
According to Bono, "He's much cooler than anyone in his videos." That's high praise indeed as French filmmaker/photographer Stéphane Sednaoui has conjured up many of music's hippest clips. Glitter, mirror balls, metallic paint--if it glows, shines, or sparkles, you can bet he's incorporated it into one of his projects. Sednaoui's background in fashion permeates every production, so it's no wonder he's worked with such stylish performers as Bjork and Garbage's Shirley Manson. (Like Anton Corbijn, celebrity portraiture is also part of his purview.) Fortunately, his are more than pretty pictures, but concentrated capsules of mood, as in his melancholy meditations for Massive Attack ("Sly") and Tricky ("Pumpkin"), and movement, as in his ecstatic explorations for the Red Hot Chili Peppers ("Give It Away"), U2 ("Mysterious Ways"), and Bjork ("Big Time Sensuality"). And yes, trivia buffs, that's Sofia Coppola in the bad trip video for the Black Crowes' "Sometimes Salvation." --Kathleen C. Fennessy with Ryan Boudinot
