Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
This 1989 drama penned by pre-Basic Instinct screenwriter Joe Eszterhas is a powerful tale of family identity and loyalty threatened by a ghost from the Third Reich. Jessica Lange stars as a Chicago criminal attorney whose beloved immigrant father (Armin Mueller-Stahl, in his American film debut) is accused of once having been a monstrous SS officer for Hitler. While Lange's character does a good job defending the old man in court against witnesses who charge him with numerous unspeakable acts, her own certainty that he is innocent slowly crumbles, leaving her with a horrifying personal dilemma. Directed by Costa-Gavras (Z), the film displays some of his distracting tendency toward unnecessarily broad storytelling, but Eszterhas's script is disciplined and moving, and Lange and Mueller-Stahl are stunning in their depiction of a loving relationship deeply shaken by history. --Tom Keogh
Description
Music Box provides celebrated director Costa-gavras another opportunity to weave a story of nail-biting suspense with frightening political overtones. In this intense courtroom thriller, Chicago attorney Ann Talbot (Jessica Lange) agrees to defend her Hungarian immigrant father mike Laszlo (Armin Mueller-Stahl) against accusations of heinous war crimes committed 50 years earlier. As the trial unfolds, Ann probes for evidence that will not only establish his innocence, but also lay to rest her own agonizing doubts about his past. When a hospitalized witness is suddenly located in Budapest, the trial moves to her father's homeland. Here crucial testimony plus Ann's personal investigation lead to astonishing results.

Exclamations of religious awe are in order. Legendary and long sought-after, this live Led Zeppelin collection is nothing less than the rock music equivalent of the Holy Grail. Quite simply, this is what all the fuss was about.

Given that they were the biggest band in the world, Zeppelin were notoriously camera-shy in their heyday. Their official filmic legacy until now has been just the fascinating but flawed The Song Remains the Same. While this new set presents some previously unseen footage from the same 1973 Madison Square Garden gigs, its real wonders lie in the earlier (1970) Royal Albert Hall footage and the later Earls Court (1975) and Knebworth (1979) concerts. Everything here looks and sounds new-minted, thanks to painstaking restoration and remastering of both audio and visual sources, a Herculean labor of love on the part of co-producer Dick Carruthers working hand-in-glove with Jimmy Page. Trawling through thousands of yards of previously unseen film and unheard tape recordings--some with missing visuals, some with missing audio--Page and Carruthers have chosen only the best possible footage available. They were also at pains to make the segments segue seamlessly so that the viewer is treated to what feels like a continuous concert--just sample the transition from a grainy Super 8 "Immigrant Song" (Sydney, 1972) to "Black Dog" at MSG.

Highlights? It's not hyperbole to say that every powerhouse minute of this collection (some 230 minutes of concert footage plus another hour and a half of extra DVD material) is a rare musical and visual treat. But hearing Page's violin bow work on "Dazed and Confused" in DTS or Dolby 5.1 is an experience not soon forgotten. --Mark Walker

I am so glad I purchased this. The performances are absolutely amazing! This is all about the music - the best of the best. I only wish I were able to be there when they took place.

Excellent dvd set. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars Why Led Zeppelin's music is CLASSIC.......2007-06-22

I was, am, and always shall BE mesmerized by this DVD complilation. It's a journey through the 70s, and it brought back a lot of great childhood memories as I watched Robert Plant prance on stage and Jimmy Page play like he was on fire. Which he was. But what sets Zeppelin apart from today's musical bands is simple: They didn't write or perform social/political commetary in a time filled with anti-war sentiment and civil injustices. Zeppelin saved that for Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, David Bowie- just to name a few. This was genius on Zeppelin's part and that's why Zeppelin will always be a classic rock band. Their songs are in no way dated the way other bands' songs from the 70s are. Oh sure, their clothes are dated on this DVD- check out Jimmy Page's hand-sewn astrology symbols on his pants- but their music will outlive any of us, all of us- and thank Zeppelin for that.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Stunning.......2007-06-13

I am sure the details have all been listed-so I will say this: Get some nice headphones that accent the bass, and enjoy this fantastic collection.
Thank god, "the suits" that ran these boys, coughed up the money, time and energy to get the band on 16mm film. The collection of clips and interviews add to the treasures. This is the power music, that Hendrix and Cream started, but couldn't maintain. Indeed, LZ couldn't maintain it-so the early video when they were raw and hungry-and not yet drugged to numbness-is a real treat!

Also the film/sound technology was just changing in the 60's to capture the music of 60's and early 70's. What a pity, we don't have more color celluloid and 1/4 audio sync tape of Cream, Jimi, the Beatles, Motown.

With the advent of high speed Kodak 16mm film, pilotone synched Nagra 1/4" tape recorders, Eclair NPR 16mm handheld cameras, along with the competing Arriflexes from Germany, sync cables, good labs, good mics, transfers and mixes all to end up in its own personal joy, on your DVD platter.

This is music that sounds GOOD loud and rich. So rather than terrify your neighbors-get some headphones with a good bass sound, and crank it.
I heard on a radio talk show, that Plant really thought the early Live at the Royal Albert Hall performance-captured the band at a good musical stage. (considering the sloppy drugged-out future and ultimate demise)

I also heard that US Sec. of State Condoleezza Rice, has studied classical music, and in the morning she enjoys listening to Led Zepellin and Cream. I think Condi, would enjoy this DVD. Bluesy Les Paul solos added with jazz improv free form lead guitar especially on the live slow blues tracks; hard driving rock; eclectic Persian and World music motifs-Classical Bach themes, abit of Celtic folk-traditional themes: it is all electrified and in good form with a lyrical, passionate lead singer who is man enough to get out of the way at times and let the players-have some fun on their own. Long overdue-grab it now!

great concert footage and sound covering various stages of the band. a must for zepplin fans.

5 out of 5 stars Newbury Comics is Top 3 Shipper/Service Ever! Dvd is.........2007-05-13

I thought, a very moving look at the band through Page's eyes and heart.
KIller end of concert "filler" tv shows in Europe. Wow! Don't miss the last footage from 79' where Plant and Page are strangers on stage; you can actually feel the tension as they perform (Plant left at end of this tour).
Having played frisbee with Plant and JP on a Malibu beach in 73', I was moved by the sincerity Page reveals (if you look!)

For one-stop convenience, you can't beat this handy compilation of Laurel & Hardy classics. Although it's modestly priced and packaged, this DVD packs plenty of extras along with Stan & Ollie's finest feature and several of the comedy duo's best-loved "talkie" shorts. Sons of the Desert (1933) is the crown jewel in any L&H collection, and with Charley Chase as their stellar comedy costar, the boys reached the pinnacle of their unique partnership, playing a pair of Fez-wearing "Sons of the Desert" sneaking off to a convention in Chicago, but their wives discover the ruse with hilarious results. For L&H fans, it simply doesn't get any better than this, although 1932's "The Music Box" shares equal status--and a 1932 Oscar® for Best Comedy Short--in the L&H pantheon. The remaining shorts on the disc ("Another Fine Mess," "Busy Bodies," and "County Hospital") were produced during the prime of Stan & Ollie's sound-era success (1930-33), each boasting their own timeless bits and flawless routines. Abundant laughs are virtually guaranteed.

Most of the bonus material pays tribute to legendary comedy producer Hal Roach, who first partnered Stan & Ollie in 1926. A film-clip tribute includes interviews with comedy greats like Mel Brooks and Steve Allen, and on-screen articles explore Roach's career in greater detail. A "then and now" photo tour provides an historic tour of Roach Studio locations in Culver City, California, and text biographies are provided for Roach, Laurel, and Hardy. In addition to the films themselves (which never looked or sounded better), these extras make this Laurel & Hardy DVD a perfect choice for old and new fans alike. --Jeff Shannon

Being an avid fan of Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy down through the years, I really appreciated the Digitally Remastered versions of "Sons Of The Desert", "The Music Box", "Another Fine Mess", "Busy Bodies" and "County Hospital." The feature film "Sons Of The Desert" is one of my absolute favorites of their collected full length works. It is only rarely that one views a modern comedy of the quality these two portrayed.

While Pink Floyd's widely popular Pulse ranked as one of the bestselling DVDs of 2006, Rush: Replay x 3 is a similarly praiseworthy treasure-trove that's geared more for long-time Rush fans with a working knowledge of the band's evolution. New fans and late-blooming converts are just as likely to enjoy this three-concert package (compiled from previously available VHS releases from the 1980s), but it's the die-hard devotees of Canada's premiere prog-rock power trio who'll get the most from this epic-scale, remastered DVD package. Particularly welcome here are the miniature reproductions of the official programs from each of the tours featured here: "Exit Stage Left" (1981), "Grace Under Pressure" (1984) and "A Show of Hands" (1987-88). With tour-diary notes by the band's illustrious percussionist and co-founder Neil Peart, and often humorous personnel profiles and equipment list by Peart, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and bassist/synth player and vocalist Geddy Lee, these handy booklets offer both tour-related nostalgia and successive glimpses into the band's creative process. Lavishly illustrated, they're also fascinating as visual records of the band's on-stage look, album designs, and related materials.

As presented here (as opposed to earlier releases on VHS and laserdisc), the concerts are intended to complement the same live recordings (with some variations in playlists) that were previously released on CD, and the "Grace Under Pressure" CD, included here as a special-bonus fourth disc, is an all-new release exclusive to this package. If you own them all (and what self-respecting Rush fan wouldn't?), you'll have a near-complete collection of these pivotal performances. Both "Exit" (recorded at The Forum in Montreal, Quebec) and "Grace" (Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto) have been re-edited to an even hour apiece, while "A Show of Hands" (National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, England) clocks in at 90 minutes. While they lack the visual splendor of Pulse, each concert offers an equal serving of highlights, notably "The Trees" and "Xanadu" (on "Exit"), "The Spirit of Radio" and the muscular medley of "YYZ/The Temples of Syrinx/Tom Sawyer/Vital Signs" (on "Grace"); and the stunning Alex Lifeson showcase "La Villa Strangiato" (on "A Show of Gands"). The latter also includes an obligatory and always-impressive Neil Peart drum solo (on "The Rhythm Method"), and while the original video source results in occasionally murkey image quality (as also happened with "Grace Under Pressure" director David Mallet on Pulse), there's no doubt that the 5.1-channel Dolby Digital remastering (supervised by Lifeson and Mike Fraser) represents a substantial improvement in overall sound, especially for those with DTS decoders. For those who think a little Rush goes a long way, Replay x 3 will probably qualify as overkill, but true fans will be ecstatic despite the absence of certain previously available material or any backstage features that would allow a more intimate glimpse of prog-rock's most enduring practitioners. What's not here is regrettable; what is here is fantastic. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Successive blasts from the past..........2007-06-27

The three live recordings of Rush contained in this boxed set are all very good examples of the band at different moments in their development. They are also examples of the style of their times in terms of editing and pace.

The first is just plain good, with lingering camera work and reasonable sound. The enthusiasm of the band shines through and the shots of the audience are just hysterical: "Did we actually dress like that?"

The second shows the pervasive nature on the then rising MTV in its Miami Vice clothing styles and relentlessly quick intercutting during each song. Sound is good but you wish the camera could linger to see what each of the musicians is actually doing. Again, "Did we actually dress this way?"

It is a deep seated peeve of mine that directors insist on this frenetic style of intercutting. Rush is composed of three of the finer musicians out there and getting an extended look at picking techniques, fingerings and the like would be wonderful. But, alas, it is not to be...

The third is just plain fun.

I recommend this to all fans of Rush, and to casual fans who may have an interest in looking at one of the finest prog-rock ensembles to ever come rolling along.

Now, if Geddy would just put down the Fender and pick up his Rickenbacker once again...

1 out of 5 stars Great Momento - but not much more than that.......2007-05-15

It was great to relive all of these concerts I originally saw on Betamax (yes, Betamax). The energy and performance of these shows are still contageous and enjoyable to watch and it is good to have these "markers" of their career.

However, other than some nice packaging, menus and the GUP soundtrack, there is nothing new and most disappointingly, no improvement on quality, except for the audio. Could they not have dug up the original masters for a digital transfer that would have imporved the picture quality, especially on ESL?

Well, the improved audio mix almost makes up for it. I was content to put it on my laptop and just listen to a very clean mix through my earphones. I hope to hear the 5.1 mix sometime soon.

For a really great quality video and audio Rush show, see "R30" - that is magnificent DVD concert mixing.

    5 out of 5 stars Time Capsule.......2007-04-26

Canadian rockers Rush have been making the best progressive rock for over 30 years now. Neil, Alex, and Geddy have a unique chemistry together when they play that it would likely be impossible for the band to sound as great as they do if any one of the three were missing from the show. The Rush Replay set includes three DVD's and each one is a concert during their many tours throughout the 1980's-all spectacular shows that give fans an eyeful of the chemistry Rush create onstage. One of my first exposures to Rush in live format was with Exit Stage Left from 1981 when they were gaining in popularity in the U.S. thanks to Moving Pictures. Exit Stage Left is included on here and remains as fantastic as I remember from the first time as the band explodes with a hit list from Moving Pictures in between some classics from the earlier days like "Xanadu" and "The Trees." Next is a 1984 show from the Grace Under Pressure tour which shows the constant evolution of the band in their style, sound, and popularity. The set list with this show isn't what I expected because they perform a lot of the songs that never crossed over to radio and even leave out some of their best known songs like "Limelight", "Tom Sawyer," and "Subdivisions," but they still put on such an awesome show that the choice of songs becomes secondary. The third DVD, and probably my favorite now, is A Show of Hands from 1988. With this tour, Rush were kind of reliving the past decade where they found their greatest commercial success starting with 1980's Permanent Waves through 1987's Hold Your Fire. This show includes some of the best tracks from every release during their glory days as well as older classics from the 70's and, as with every show and every year that goes by, Rush become more defined as musicians while they play an incredible set with songs that feel like you're on an emotional and spiritual journey. Rush have such a wide catalog now that they can do a different set list with each show and still leave their audience stunned and satisfied. This DVD/CD release is a great way to start your experience with Rush. Another factor to note is how the band's look changed with the times. You can tell it's 1981 and then 1984 and so on, but what counts most is how their sound always felt deeper to the listener as the band evolved. Listen to how they jam and rework their classic "Closer to the Heart," one of the very few songs included on all three DVD's and sounding more aged, classic, and polished every time they play.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Opera From La Scala.......2007-01-09

Not only are the performances top-notch, but the production values exceed what one has grown to expect from operas on DVD. Each opera in this collection conveys the feeling (almost) of sitting in the audience.

This collection was recommended by a friend who works in opera. He not only is a talented producer, but is very close with his euros. I was about to order an opera DVD which cost most of what I paid for this entire set!

First Class Opera at a bargain basement price.

    5 out of 5 stars Diverse collection!.......2007-01-03

It's amazing to see this collection. Not all of the performances are spectacular, but there are many surprises of excellence. My favorites for singing are ADRIANA, LUCIA, COSI, and I VESPRI.

    5 out of 5 stars A treasure at a bargain price.......2006-08-09

This is a superlative collection of live opera transmissions from the most important opera house in the world, La Scala. The Lucia and the Due Foscari are among my favorites. Superb voices, gorgeous settings and sumptuous costumes. Verdi's Attila is seldom mounted, and this is a chance to witness this very exciting opera in a monumental production. I count this as a most important section of my operatic video library.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!.......2007-05-14

This CD/DVD set is fantastic. CBR is simply wonderful. I've seen her live and she is just a good live as the DVD indicates. I can't wait for her next recording. Her voice and band are so enjoyable. Favorite performance on the DVD: Enchantment. I love watching it over and over again. The background segment with the interview of CBR is really nice.

5 out of 5 stars Even better live.........2007-05-04

I saw Corinne Bailey Rae the other night when she opened for John Legend and even though I liked her music prior to seeing her I was extremely impressed by the live set. She sang even better live then she does on the cd and the songs came to life right before my eyes. I actually was feeling the songs like I imagined she was feeling them when she was singing them. The live version of "Seasons change" was incredible. Im officially a fan and I cant wait until I see her again. Until then this live album will have to do. If she comes to your town, go and see her, you will NOT be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful.......2007-04-22

I was introduced to Corinne Bailey Rae's music by a friend of mine recently. It's not often you listen to an artist for the first time and feel you've known them for a very long time. Miss Rae is one of those artists for me. She puts her heart and soul into every song she sings.

I purchased Live In London & New York the first day it was available and quite frankly will probably wear my DVD player out in short order.

The DVD has 2 sound tracks. Dolby 5.1 and stereo. Needless to say the 5.1 audio is excellent. I haven't tryed the stereo track yet.

The video production is superb. I am not a fan of some of the producers who feel they must change scenes every 1/2 second or so along with more views of the audience than of the performer. This DVD has none of that. It's as if each scene change was thought out before hand choosing just the right angle to show. There are many close-ups of Miss Rae and the excellent lighting brings out her beautiful eyes and sincere smile. She has a full compliment of musicians backing her up. I was very impressed with "Since I've been Loving You" written by Led Zeppelin.

I also enjoyed the documentary which gives you an insight into what inspired each song that Miss Rae wrote. The 4 music videos are an added bonus which I thoroughly enjoyed not to mention the live CD recorded in New York.

All in all you can't go wrong making this purchase.

The Director's Label Series is the premier showcase for the art of the music video. The previous boxed set featured the work of Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham, and Michel Gondry, with each director contributing music videos, commercials, and documentary featurettes. The Director's Label Boxed Set Vol. 2 features the work of video auteurs Mark Romanek, Stéphane Sednaoui, Anton Corbijn, and Jonathan Glazer. There is a bounty of superb material here, with watershed videos from some of the biggest acts of the past twenty years (Metallica, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Madonna) as well as from lesser-knowns (Eels, Mirwais, David Sylvian, Herbert Gronemeyer). Beyond the videos, extras include commercials, beautifully-produced booklets for each director, and an exhaustive selection of documentary shorts. When future generations debate the artistic merit of the music video, this is where they'll start.

Vol. 4: Work of Director Mark Romanek

Artists who've worked with him describe Mark Romanek as "meticulous" and "demanding." Yet, the biggest names in the business have clamored to work with the mercurial helmer, because they know he'll make them look good: Madonna ("Rain"), No Doubt ("Hella Good"), etc. Along the way, the Grammy winner has been behind some of the world's most famous--and infamous--videos. On the groundbreaking side, there's Lenny Kravitz's exhilarating "Are You Gonna Go My Way," which made the musician a star in one fell swoop. On the controversial side, there's Fiona Apple's teasing "Criminal," Nine Inch Nails' macabre "Closer," and Jay-Z's apocalyptic "99 Problems"--the latter two in director's cut editions. In another class entirely, is Romanek's heartbreaking video for Johnny Cash's "Hurt." More than a promo, it's an elegy for a legend. Despite an interview with Robin Williams, this collection otherwise overlooks Romanek's features, One Hour Photo and Static.

Vol. 5: Work of Director Jonathan Glazer

British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer began by directing pop promos and advertisements before transitioning into features. His video style is crisp and clean, yet vaguely menacing. There's always more going on than meets the eye--a quality carried over into his films. Like Kubrick, he's partial to Steadicams and empty hallways. Massive Attack's "Karmacoma" even features twins straight from The Shining, while Blur's "The Universal" cops from A Clockwork Orange, so he's not exactly shying away from the influence. Glazer's commercial style, on the other hand, is more wide-ranging, less easily identifiable. His ambitious ads for Guinness, Levi's, etc. bring out his playful side in a way the videos do not. Interestingly, oddball actor Denis Lavant (Beau Travail) shows up twice, in the creepy clip for UNKLE's "Rabbit in Your Headlights" and the "Last Orders" spot for Stella Artois. This Director's Series edition also features excerpts from Sexy Beast and Birth.

Vol. 6: Work of Director Anton Corbijn

Known as much for his photography as his videos, Anton Corbijn has produced some of rock's most memorable images. Long associated with Depeche Mode and U2 (that's his iconic shot on the cover of Joshua Tree), the Dutch director has worked with a diverse array of acts, including Joy Division ("Atmosphere"), Nirvana ("Heart-Shaped Box"), and Metallica ("Hero of the Day"). This collection captures over 20 years of wit and style, with influences ranging from surrealism, expressionism, and elegant European auteurs like Fritz Lang, Wim Wenders, and Ingmar Bergman (especially The Seventh Seal). Like many of the best video makers, Corbijn takes his cues more from the music and personality of the artists than the lyrics. The striking video for David Sylvian's "Red Guitar," for instance, features the singer, an old man, and a young boy--no red guitars anywhere. That about sums up Corbijn: often slick, occasionally bizarre--always unpredictable.

Vol. 7: Work of Director Stéphane Sednaoui

According to Bono, "He's much cooler than anyone in his videos." That's high praise indeed as French filmmaker/photographer Stéphane Sednaoui has conjured up many of music's hippest clips. Glitter, mirror balls, metallic paint--if it glows, shines, or sparkles, you can bet he's incorporated it into one of his projects. Sednaoui's background in fashion permeates every production, so it's no wonder he's worked with such stylish performers as Bjork and Garbage's Shirley Manson. (Like Anton Corbijn, celebrity portraiture is also part of his purview.) Fortunately, his are more than pretty pictures, but concentrated capsules of mood, as in his melancholy meditations for Massive Attack ("Sly") and Tricky ("Pumpkin"), and movement, as in his ecstatic explorations for the Red Hot Chili Peppers ("Give It Away"), U2 ("Mysterious Ways"), and Bjork ("Big Time Sensuality"). And yes, trivia buffs, that's Sofia Coppola in the bad trip video for the Black Crowes' "Sometimes Salvation." --Kathleen C. Fennessy with Ryan Boudinot

3 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as the first set.......2006-01-06

I have not watched every single video in the package (because I got bored of them). But I feel qualified to make a short review.

The first set was so good you could actually invite friends over and enjoy some Michel Gondry and Chris Cunningham together. Not so with this set. The videos are not crowd pleasers, and the videos here are generally more pretentious, especially those from Anton Corbijn (photographer turned video director). In the interviews you will see artists freely admitting they have no idea what such and such video is about. If you don't like symbolism, you are in for a "Bumpy Ride."

It seems like I am watching some of these videos for a college class in music video history, like "this was the first video to ever use soft focus", or, "this was the first music video that uses Slow Motion." So like another guy already said, they pale compared to what is on MTV right this minute.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Get Robbed Like I did..........2006-01-02

If you were a fan of the first Volume because of the creativity and how these directors were pushing the envelope, I would suggest not spending your hard earned money here on volume 2. All of these videos lack imagination, I hope that Volume 3 will have more interesting directors, frankly, I was bored, You could turn on MTV and see better videos than this garbage. I am raing this Item "1 star and that is due to the good packaging design, and not the content.

5 out of 5 stars so much there!.......2005-12-14

Incredible!. I found this set at the V-Mega store in SFO. It was set up on the demo wall. I stood there and watched until my legs went numb. Artistic value is very high. I have been kind of turned off by music videos the last few years but this changed my perception of what is out there now. Even the commercials were very entertaining and well thought out.
I was going to skip them, glad I did not.
    Merry X-Mas!

    5 out of 5 stars Who Needs A Comparison.......2005-11-08

I went ahead and reviewed each disc individually -- just because the work of these directors is too diverse to be described in one 300 word review....

Here's what I think about this series vs. the first one. I liked the first series very much, and thought the whole idea was great (not knowing that they were going to continue the series). However, the second boxset is bigger, bolder, and regardless of others say, has comparable if not better material than the first. Jonze, Gondry, and Cunningham are great directors, but in no way do they sit on a pedestal above guys like Anton Corbijn or Mark Romanek, no way. I was less familiar with Stephane Sednaoui than the other directors, but even his work is spectacular in its own way (it's much different than the other directors, very French).

There's one thing in particular that sets the Directors Label apart from other video compilations: diversity. Instead of just packing every director who's worked with Radiohead into a series, several talented directors from very different schools are brought together. This allows us to compare and contrast their styles, techniques, and everything else that puts a film/videography/cinematography/etc nut in heaven. The only thing that series is missing is some directors in the Hip Hop realm, and Palm announced that they'd be adding a new installment for these directors next year.

If you're not familiar with the Directors Label Series, find a friend who owns some of the discs or rent a couple of them, otherwise you'll kick yourself if you buy one first and end up craving the boxset. And honestly, the only way to truly appreciate this series is to have all the directors, their unique styles, and their material together -- it's an experience.

3 out of 5 stars Great movie, OK collection.......2007-06-02

The Man Who Planted Trees is a great animated short about the power of one individual to make a difference for our environment. It's an excellent film. The collection, however, pales in comparison. It's not worth the extra money-- if you want the Man Who Planted Trees, just buy the DVD of that alone.

4 out of 5 stars Story telling as entertaining cultural intro.......2007-01-27

This series performs multiple functions. In the French track, storytelling can offer lessons often ignored in the native language of American students. It also can demonstrate the universality of protecting nature and politicians corrupting the best work of man. In addition to the educational value of this series, the animation is hypnotizing and wonderful.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!!.......2007-01-13

I remember seeing "The Man who planted Trees" as a child and then, finally found out about the animated cartoon and bought it recently. Even as a child the ideas haunted you and stayed with me through out these years.
It is imagery and summation of ideas which you may even encounter on a daily basis.........but just as a poet makes usual unusual, Frederic Back's film makes it worth remembering forever.

3 out of 5 stars Buy "The Man Who Planted Trees" on its own, not this boxed set.......2007-01-12

5 stars+ for "The Man Who Planted Trees" it is a gorgeous piece of animation, and beautiful heartfelt story about one man's stoic determination to restore a wind ravaged denuded landscape. Having seen The Man Who Planted Trees many years ago and loving it, I was keen to check out the animator's other work, but couldn't help but be disappointed as none of Frederic Back's other work lives up to his masterpiece The Man Who Planted Trees. Unless you are truely a diehard animation aficionado, and like to explore an artist's earlier musing's and influences i can't recommend this box set. But i highly recommend buying "The Man Who Planted Trees" on it own. Beautiful, moving and inspirational.

    5 out of 5 stars Exquisite storytelling.......2007-01-12

The visual and auditory journeys of these movies have enthralled friends and family members of all ages.

Thanks for sending the movie so quickly. Outstanding Serive. Thanks!!

      5 out of 5 stars accidental admiration.......2007-01-11

I orginally bought this move because a school that I used to work at donated some of the furniture to the court room scene. I have really been moved by this movie in many ways. The acting is great and it is also wonderful to see the sights and the sounds of Chicago on film. I originally bought the movie in VHS and have now replaced it with a DVD.

5 out of 5 stars DVD and Product Review.......2006-02-17

Jessica Lange's greatest role, in a much underrated movie. The DVD version is wonderful. Delivered exactly when promised, and in superb condition.

1 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment at the quality!.......2005-11-22

Having originally seen the film when it was released, and owning the VHS version ( which by the way has captions) I could not believe the extremely poor quality of the DVD. I have slowly been replacing my videos w/DVD versions. In this case I will keep the VHS and get rid of my just purchased DVD copy. The film, the director, actors, are all incredibly good. I would give it 10 if there were such a number available, but certainly a 5. However the quality of the sound is so poor that if there were minus numbers, I would use them. Others have already written of the format, etc. so I will not repeat all that, but I agree that it should have had the option of widescreen, etc. But for the sound, there is NO excuse. It is not only poor, but at times, when the actors are speaking in a low voice, the DVD is inaudible. There is NO such problem on the VHS, and if there were there is captioning to resort to. Since there is no problem w/the sound on the video, it never occurred to me that the DVD would have such a big one.
If you can find a VHS copy, I would recommend it over this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars WHAT WERE THE DISTRIBUTORS THINKING?.......2005-09-21

I own this film on Laserdisc. It is in WIDESCREEN 2:35 anamorphic presentation. I once saw a VHS version in full screen. Awful! In a world where widescreen and 16x9 are common even for the most dopiest of films that Hollywood puts out, didn't anyone have the sense to care about its original aspect ratio? Guess not.

I did find a region 2 PAL DVD version from Spain that does offer it in WIDESCREEN; runs about $29 with shipping. I ordered it because it's unlikely this film will be redistributed here in widescreen anytime soon. Classic film with great performances.

We have the entire Baby Einstein set...and this DVD was repurchased by us so that we could have a copy in two places...

Our children absolutely adore the sweet scenes of Christmas, with the wonderful renditions of holiday music accompanying the puppet scenes.

Our children also love to see other children on screen, as they dance and sing along to the music and the puppets.

Highly recommended as are all the Baby Einstein videos. Enjoy!
