Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
François Truffaut's fascinating 1969 film, based on a real-life, 18th-century behavioral scientist's efforts to turn a feral boy into a civilized specimen, is an ingenious and poignant experience. In a piece of resonant casting that immediately turns this story into an echo of the creative process, Truffaut himself plays Dr. Itard, a specialist in the teaching of the deaf. Itard takes in a young lad (Jean-Pierre Cargol) found to have been living like an animal in the woods all his life. In the spirit of social experiment, Itard uses rewards and punishments to retool the boy's very existence into something that will impress the world. Beautifully photographed in black and white and making evocative use of such charmingly antiquated filmmaking methods as the iris shot, The Wild Child has a semidocumentary form that barely veils Truffaut's confessional slant. What does it mean to turn the raw material of life into a monument to one's own experience and bias? The question has all sorts of intriguing reverberations when one considers that Truffaut's own wild childhood was rescued by love of the cinema and that a degree of verisimilitude factors into his films starring Jean-Pierre Leaud--the troubled lad who grew up in Truffaut's work from The 400 Blows onward. (The Wild Child is dedicated to Leaud.) --Tom Keogh

Real-life couple Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn star in this enjoyable 1987 comedy by Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman) about an imperious heiress (Hawn) who loses her memory after a boating accident and is identified as the wife of a handyman (Russell). Russell's character brings her "home" to his messy house and unruly kids, and the laughs follow as the aristocratic Hawn tries fitting in. Marshall delivers the comic goods, the leads are entertaining (Russell needs to do more comedy), and the supporting cast is made up of happily familiar faces, including Roddy McDowall, Edward Herrmann, and Marshall favorite Hector Elizondo in an unbilled bit. --Tom Keogh

Description

It's the craziest mix-up ever! Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell dazzle the screen in this buoyant and screwball comedy of memory-making and memory-faking. One of Hollywood's most dynamic screen pairs, Hawn and Russell make the most of every hilarious situation in this delightful riches-to-rags romance that's perfect entertainment for anyone who appreciates a great practical joke. Hawn is Joanna Stayton, the pampered wife of a pretentious, yacht-owning socialite. When their boat gets stuck for repairs, Joanna employs carpenter Dean Proffitt (Russell) to improve her closet space. But when Dean asks to be paid, he's blatantly turned down by the "nothing is ever good enough for me" Joanna. So when Joanna falls overboard and gets a bad case of amnesia, Dean takes advantage of the situation and, in a stroke of retributive genius, tells her that she's his wife and the mother of hisfour unruly children!

5 out of 5 stars Your sides are going to hurt!.......2007-02-10

"Overboard" is a Goldie Hawn classic! "Bird on a wire" and "Overboard" are neck and neck for all time funniest Goldie Hawn flicks. Either way, "Overboard" is playfully entertaining from start to finish!

5 out of 5 stars A movie to watch over and over.......2007-01-20

This movie is fun. I highly recommend it. Never get tired of watching it.

5 out of 5 stars review of Overboard.......2007-01-17

This was purchased as a gift. I am sure my daughter is enjoying it.

5 out of 5 stars Classic comedy at its funniest!.......2007-01-05

One of those comedies that never gets old, `Overboard' makes me laugh every time I put it on. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are brilliant together (on and off screen) and they prove that the whole phobia of working with your life-partners is not always justified. As Joanna Stayton, Goldie Hawn is flawlessly evil and deliciously despicable, but when a boating accident causes her amnesia she's quickly forgotten by her husband and picked up by Dean Proffitt (Kurt Russell), the handy man she previously fired. The chemistry between the two is priceless and adds to the funny factor and replay value of this genuine comedy. Some (or at least one) reviewer made mention to the fact that this man is taking advantage of her and that this is not funny but despicable. Yes he is taking advantage of her, but it's funny so get over it. Have you ever seen `Fargo'? They kidnap, murder and lie, all of which are despicable yet it's utterly hilarious. Don't be such a prude!

4 out of 5 stars Very Funny.......2007-01-05

Silly and light hearted with a good moral story.
Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russelll at their Comedic best!

Film buffs and critics can argue until their faces turn blue about whether this lavish Dickensian musical deserved the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1968, but the movie speaks for itself on grandly entertaining terms. Adapted from Dickens's classic novel, it's one of the most dramatically involving and artistically impressive musicals of the 1960s, directed by Carol Reed with a delightful enthusiasm that would surely have impressed Dickens himself. Mark Lester plays the waifish orphan Oliver Twist, who is befriended by the pickpocketing Artful Dodger (Jack Wild) and recruited into the gang of boy thieves led by Fagin (played to perfection by Ron Moody). The villainous Bill Sikes (Oliver Reed) casts his long shadow over Oliver and his friends, but the young orphan is still able to find loving care in the most desperate of circumstances. Full of memorable melodies and splendid lyrics, Oliver! is a timeless film, prompting even hard-to-please critic Pauline Kael to call it "a superb demonstration of intelligent craftsmanship," and to further observe that "it's as if the movie set out to be a tribute to Dickens and his melodramatic art as well as to tell the story of Oliver Twist." --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Oliver!.......2007-06-28

The considerable talents of British director Carol Reed and composer/lyricist Lionel Bart combine to create an exuberant musical worthy of its revered source. The cast, both young and old, excel, and songs like "Consider Yourself" and "As Long As He Needs Me" stand the test of time. "Oliver" won six Oscars, including Best Picture, a rare feat for a musical. Watch this and you'll say: "Please, sir, may I have some more?"

5 out of 5 stars Without a doubt my favorite movie!.......2007-01-21

I was thrilled to find this on dvd! Growing up in children's institutions in upstate NY, we were taken to see this when it first came out. It had an enormous impact on us. I remember we used to act out as much of the movie as we could remember in the playground. Just like Oliver, we took stong offense to anyone talking about our parents, who many of us did not know. We all fought over who would get to play the artful Dodger. I must have hummed many of these songs to myself hundreds of times over the past 30 years. And now it all comes back : - ) I was one big goose bump re-living all this!

Fagin is the kind of person children cherish and really need in their lives. Ron Moody's Fagin perfectly epitomizes what is most missing in today's culture - empathy! He is someone who takes the time to see the world through the eyes of children. Ron Moody is truly a master of his craft. It is just pure pleasure to watch him play Fagin and listen to him sing so beautifully. Dodger was who we as kids all wanted to be like. An enormously confident and charming kid who holds his own with grown-ups.

Oliver! is a kid friendly movie that happily distances itself from today's endless materialism (agreeing with a previously made point). Oliver is vulnerable but steadfastly defiant, standing up for what is rightly his. It was so easy to see ourselves in his tattered shoes.

Finally, the soundtrack. If you haven't done this, buy it. Take it with you where ever you drive and bath yourself in these happy tunes. I love nothing more than speeding off to work in the morning to Fagin's "In this life, one thing counts, in the bank large amounts..." : - ))) The cd is full of these memorable and uplifting songs.

Without a doubt my favorite movie!

Despite my 5 year olds (yes, twins) being way past their bed time, they were riveted and watched the movie to the very end; usually they'd fall asleep...

Highly recommended as one of the best must-see family movies ever!!

I like this movie, my favorite thing about it is the songs. I wish I could find the soundtrack for it!

This movie was great! Nancy who was so brave, protected Oliver. At first she thought Bill Sykes[Oliver Reed]was a good man, but when she later discovered he was bad. She was trying to protect Oliver, sense she had got so used to how nice he was in the beginning, she didn't now he would kill her. I watched this movie and when he killed her at the bridge scene, I was shocked! but it's just acting. I myself am an actor.! My favorite movies are

Unlike the fly in the 1958 horror classic, they never really explain what happens to the neighbor's sheepdog when young Wilby Daniels trades places with it. The dog just vanishes, or is subsumed or assumed or something, leaving Wilby (Tommy Kirk) to explain to his dog-hating, allergic, mailman father (Fred MacMurray) that he's turned into a canine. The Shaggy Dog seems like the first instance of Disney packaging, as most of the principals were either Mouseketeers or had been in the short Disney segment Spin and Marty or a previous Disney film. As successful as The Absent Minded Professor for humor, Dog follows Wilby and a rival as they vie for the hand of the new French girl in school, and the girl next door (Annette Funicello). The exchanges with Wilby's younger brother, Moochie (Kevin Corcoran), who always wanted a family dog, are alone worth the price of the tape. Indeed the most successful element of this overall endearing film is the re-pairing of the two actors as brothers (they had done so before in 1957's Old Yeller). This is family fare that's diverting without pandering, a feat that the later Disney regime would have a difficult time re-creating. --Keith Simanton

Description

The first live action movie ever produced by Walt Disney is on DVD for the first time ever! Fred MacMurray heads an all-star cast that includes Jean Hagen, Tim Considine, Kevin Corcoran, and Annette Funicello in her big screen debut. After years of on-the-job clashes with cranky canines, mail carrier Wilson Daniels (MacMurray) sees man's best friend as his worst enemy. This makes for one hairy situation when a magical ring accidentally transforms his teenage son Wilby (Kirk) into a lumbering sheepdog! Can Wilby break the spell and foil a team of international spies, or will both he and his dad wind up in the doghouse? Packed with sidesplitting antics, slapstick chases, and hilarious sight gags, this madcap adventure will tickle the funny bone of every two- (and four-) footed member of your family!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This Original Outshines the Remake.......2007-04-11

This film is a classic family film to be enjoyed by everyone, and the recent remake can't hold a candle to it. Fred MacMurray, Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran are at their best.

5 out of 5 stars Shaggy Dog (Orig Version).......2007-03-14

This is a good clean funny Disney movie. Typical for the era it was made for and for kids. I was getting it for a small grandson as a birthday present and also ordered one for myself at the same time. Unfortunately, some of the remakes of Disney movies have not been for the very young any more which is why I prefer to get the original version. My grandson loved it and watches it repeatedly and his parents do not have to worry about a 6 year old seeing anything inappropriate for his age. At the same time adults also enjoy watching it for laughs and fun.

4 out of 5 stars A Disney Classic.......2007-01-29

This Disney movie is charming and full of fun. The movie manages to pack a lot into a relatively short time, boasting at least five plots and sub-plots. Though one of the central plots involves spies, a car chase and a boat chase, the movie is quite tame and suitable for even the youngest members of the family.

Wilby Daniels, played by Disney regular Tommy Kirk, is somewhat of a geek. He experiments in his basement. His latest experiment is a missile interceptor that seems to be ready to launch though Wilby did not ignite it. Moochie Daniels, played by Kevin Corcoran, another Disney regular, is Wilby's younger brother. Disney paired Corcoran with Kirk as Kirk's younger brother in five movies. This movie was the second of the five.

Given Wilby's nerdy ways, he has a problem meeting girls. Lovely Allison d'Allessio, played by Annette Funicello, yet another Disney regular, lives close by, but Wilby struggles to ask Allison out. Wilby's supposed friend Buzz Miller, played by yet another Disney Regular Tim Considine, is a smooth operator when it comes to dating and is an even smoother operator when it comes to getting Wilby to pay for Buzz's dates.

Dad Wilson Daniels is a mailman who hates dogs. Fred McMurray, one more Disney regular, plays Wilson Daniels. Wilson suffers throughout this movie, mostly because of Wilby's activities. There is the hole in the roof, the near disaster as Wilby gets ready to hammer a lump that turns out to be Wilson's head, the talking dog that gets Wilson in trouble with the police. Poor Dad.

Though Wilby seems to be in continuous trouble, major trouble ensues when Wilby accidentally picks up a ring from a museum. Wilby reads the inscription on the ring, in canis corpore transmuto, which translates approximately as change into a dog's body. Soon Wilby sprouts fur, paws and a cold wet nose, and comedy is sure to follow.

The movie has already set up comedy because we know that Wilson Daniels dislikes dogs. Wilby is also supposed to go to a dance with Buzz, Allison, and a beautiful new neighbor. But the excitement increases when Wilby, in his dog form, overhears spies. Soon Wilby wreaks al kinds of havoc as he drives a car while still a dog. Things become even more exciting when Wilson Daniels attempts to explain to the police and then the government how he knows about a secret project. Who is going to believe anyone that a dog told them?

Some of Disney's best movies were light comedy. "The Shaggy Dog" combines the talents of some of the best Disney stars of the era with a fast-paced plot and moderate slap-stick. In addition, nearly every movie with Fred McMurray in it is guaranteed to be enjoyable. Most important, every member of the family can watch this movie. Sit back and enjoy one of the better live action movies produced by Walt Disney.

4 out of 5 stars No such dog as a Bratislavian Sheepdog.......2006-06-10

I would just like everyone out there to know that there is no such dog as a Bratislavian Sheepdog. The name was created strictly for use in this movie. The dog in the role as Wilby Daniels & Chiffon is in fact an Old English Sheepdog named Sam, who was rescued from a pound for the amount of $3

5 out of 5 stars DISNEY'S COMEDY CLASSIC "THE SHAGGY DOG".......2006-03-15

One of the best Disney feature films with incredible performances from the young teenage cast, as well as Fred MacMurray and Jean Hagen. Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran play brothers, Wilby and Moochie Daniels, who are always getting into trouble with their imaginations (telling the cops their neighbors are spies) and experiments in the basement (a rocket goes through the roof of their house!) in this delightful family comedy. Tommy and Tim Considine play best friends who are in competition for the affections of two lovely young girls, hometown beauty Annette Funicello and the new girl in town, sophisticated beauty Roberta (Bobbie) Shore. Roberta's from Europe and owns a big, shaggy sheep dog, which takes an immediate liking to Tommy Kirk. As the story progresses, Tommy, Tim, and Roberta are visiting the local museum, Tommy accidentally knocks over a small table of ancient jewels and one of the rings gets caught in the cuff of his pants. Later at home, he discovers the ring and reads a mysterious encryption on the ring. Thus, turning him into a big shaggy sheep dog! The story is great and it keeps the viewers attention throughout. The folks at Disney have done a great job with this dvd release, which presents the movie in the original b&w widescreen version (this is the one I watched first) and a colorized version. Also included are interviews with Tommy Kirk, Kevin Corcoran, Tim Considine, and Roberta Shore. A nice tribute to the late Fred MacMurray, with comments from all of the before mentioned. "The Shaggy Dog" had a follow-up film in 1976 "The Shaggy D.A." which starred Dean Jones as Wilby Daniels. The movie is inferior to the original, but is still entertaining and very funny thanks to Tim Conway's co-starring role. I wish the folks at Disney had made this follow-up film with Tommy Kirk and the entire original cast reprising their roles. I highly recommend "The Shaggy Dog," for it holds a very special place in my dvd library and I'm sure it would yours too.

5 out of 5 stars Important Lessons..........2007-03-19

This is perhaps one of the most important stories in the field of Child Development. Not only does it illustrate a story of unimaginable child abuse and provide unparalleled insight into the effects of social isoloation on the psychological and mental development of humans, but it also reveals the darker side of science -- a part so driven by notoriety and money that it ends up abusing Genie over and over.

All students of psychology, child development, linguistics, social work, and related fields should see this program and get to know it intimately.

4 out of 5 stars Good portrayal of a sensitve subject and fascinating one.......2007-02-26

I first became aware of the "Genie" story because the home where she was kept was a few blocks away from me in Temple City, CA. Her story was front page news in 1970 as more and more details came out about how she had never left her bedroom for her entire life, and how dysfunctional the family was. The father committed suicide less than a week after the headlines for hit.

The PBS documentary on Genie is excellent and must see for all psychology students, brain researchers, and anyone interested in the whole concept of how a child develops in the "wild".

Description

Acclaimed OscarÂ(r)-nominated* director François Truffaut (Small Change, Day for Night) has created an absorbing (Leonard Maltin) film about the true-life tale of a young boy found living alone in the woods of France in the 1700s. Using actual journal entries, Truffaut not only directed and co-wrote the script with Jean Gruault, but also starred as the unflappable Doctor Jean-Marc-Gaspard Itard, the visionary who takes on the incredible task of civilizing The Wild Child. At The National Institute for the Deaf and Dumb in Paris, a barely clothed and dirty young boy is admitted. Found in a forest, the child is unable to speak, communicate or function in society. Christened Victor by the hospital staff, his case is taken up by Doctor Itard (Truffaut),a lone physician who has an unyielding dedication to re-integrating the lad into society. But the road to tame the beast is a rocky one and Itard will have to work tirelessly to teach Victor how to re-claim his place in the world even if it means staking his reputation on it! *1974: Dayfor Night

Done in a low-key docu-feature style by a man with child's soul. The untamed warmness of Victor perfectly counterbalance the civilized coldness of Itard. Truffaut does not try to justify anything. One of his best.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Francois Truffault's Film.......2007-04-16

Provocative, engaging, and moving, this movie is an absolute wonder - elegant, artful, with breathtaking use of Vivaldi's music, with amazing performance form Jeanne-Pierre Cargol as a Wild Child of the title, the young boy who was found living in the forest outside a village in 1790th France. Based on the book of the physician Itard (played by Francois Truffault) who took the boy in and tried to teach him how to live among humans. The contrast between the narrator's (Itard's) passionless voice and his growing emotional attachment to the boy is heartbreaking.

"The Wild Child" is my favorite Truffault's film - I think it is much stronger than his more popular "400 Blows". Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars The Wild Child.......2006-08-29

1970, black and white, French with English subtitles. I spent my teen years in Tampa, Florida, which enjoys a fine independent film scene, but I never saw a single one. I was washing dishes for minimum wage, okay? So, for the last time, I'm no art film snob. Don't be on my case because I watch movies with subtitles sometimes. I watched HERO that way. It really sucked. It really, really, really sucked. Not like a Hoover. Like a black hole.

True story. In the late 1700s, a boy who was roughly eleven years old was found living in the woods. He'd been there eight or so years. Jonathan Swift's yahoos in all their glory, and perhaps the basis for every jungle boy myth before and after Tarzan. As an amateur teacher myself, I would NOT want to be the one educating this child. The guy who took on the job left journals, and they're the basis for this movie. Realism was the obvious goal, and it was achieved.

Consider this. Fiction loves to look at humanity from perspectives outside ourselves. STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND. Mr Spock. Kwai Chang Caine. Data. BABYLON 5. Odo. THE WILD CHILD covers a lot of ground, subtly, in under 90 minutes. I'd love to know how they found this child actor who always looked more comfortable on four legs than on two. I'll watch this one again.

After you've enjoyed the film -- not before -- watch the trailer they showed in the USA in 1970. It's on the DVD. You will laugh your butt off. HAMLET, as sold by Barnum and Bailey barkers. Clueless marketing morons are a constant in every age. Conga line of suckholes.

5 out of 5 stars The first signals !.......2004-10-20

This is an absolutely and concise essay on teaching and eventually giving of love .
A baby is abandoned in the woods of France and discovered in 1797 , by a local farmer. It does not do either film justice to suggest this a agallic version of the Miracle worker due both films ride in diferent directions .
Truffaut himself plays the role of a Dr who undertook the challenging task of training the brutish child .
Based on a Itard 's journal , this film is one of the most ambitious in the formidable career of this French filmmaker.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves to be Discovered.......2004-07-11

"The Wild Child" was directed by Francois Truffaut and released in 1970. Truffaut has made some extraordinary movies, such as the Antoine Doinel series and "Jules et Jim." Unfortunately, this movie is given relatively little recognition, even though it truly is first-rate. Based on a true story, the movie concerns Victor, l'enfant sauvage - a boy found in the wilds of France. Truffaut cast himself as Dr. Jean Itard an 18th century physician who helps "tame" and educate the boy. Initially branded an "idiot" and uneducable by local townspeople, Victor is helped immensely by Dr. Itard through his humane treatment.

The story is fascinating and quite gripping. In addition, the movie raises interesting questions regarding "civilized" behavior and ethics, as it compares Victor to various people in the town. Although similar stories has been told elsewhere (e.g., Herzog's "Every Man for Himself"), Truffaut manages to put his own interesting spin on the tale. Further, his direction is masterful, and he won Best Director from the National Board of Review. The film was made in black and white, which adds great realism to the story - it looks terrific (It won Best Cinematography from the National Society of Film Critics). The only debit is the lack of DVD extras.

Wild Things 2, the purported sequel to the 1998 guilty-pleasure classic, returns to steamy Florida for another tale of trashy thrills among the lives of high school students. Brittany (Susan Ward, of the Aaron Spelling soaps Malibu Shores and Sunset Beach) is a beach-volleyball stud and nice girl whose chance for happiness is threatened by her vicious rival Maya (Leila Arcieri). Toss in a suspicious investigator (Isaiah Washington), some plot twists, and laughable dialogue, and sit back for the ride. Wild Things 2 isn't really a sequel; none of the characters (and not surprisingly none of the actors) return, though there is a re-do of the original's most famous scene. That's about the only semi-noteworthy aspect of this straight-to-video potboiler. --David Horiuchi

2 out of 5 stars bad follow-up.......2007-02-23

As good of surprise that the original movie was, Wild Tings 2 surprised us again- in the opposite way. May be expectations were high, but this movie proved to be swallow and predictible, something that the first was not. If you have not seen the first one then this one could be watchedwith some interest and thatshow it gets the second star. A movie about a spoiled rich girl that wants everything and will stop at nothing in order to do it.

1 out of 5 stars Very boring.......2006-02-22

The plot to this movie or so called sequal is horrible. I rented this movie expecting something good and I end up falling asleep. I actually had to watch it several times just to find out what really happened. Don't even buy it, it is a waist of your money!

3 out of 5 stars Wild Things 2.......2006-02-22

It's a movie that is certainly a sign of the times. It's a teen devises a way to get money type movie. It does contain murder and some skin. It won't win an Academy Award, but it's fun if you don't take it seriously.

1 out of 5 stars UH...NO!!!.......2006-01-05

Don't even think about it.

1 out of 5 stars Direct to video potboiler re-tread that never should have been made.......2005-09-30

This direct to video "sequel" is actually more of a re-tread of the original 1998 guilty pleasure erotic thriller/film noir potboiler, and another of the countless, and pointless, direct to video sequels to come from Sony/Comlumbia/Tri-Star as of late (Cruel Intentions 2 & 3, Starship Troopers 2, shall I go on?). Wild Things 2 focuses around a rich girl (Susan Ward) whose stepfather mysteriously dies, and the only thing standing in her way of inheritance is her high school rival (Son of the Beach's hot Leila Arcieri) who claims to be the man's true, biological daughter. Naturally, just like in the original, there are plot twists aplenty, as learned by an insurance investigator (Isiah Washington, giving a somewhat inspired performance), and naturally, there are double crosses, murders, and a redux of the first film's threesome, only it's not as erotic as the original's. Wild Things 2 isn't just a cardboard copy of the original with none of it's good points, it's a solid waste of film that even fans of the original film will hate. Is it worth seeing? Depends how much you liked the first Wild Things, but for the rest of us, just watch the original and forget this ever happened.

5 out of 5 stars Joan, Will You Marry Me?.......2005-12-14

OK, guilty pleasure time. Don't laugh, but long before she shaved her head and became some sort of icon/figurehead for the lesbian nation, Joan Jett chewed gum, kicked ass, and took names, trafficking in crunchy glam, Stones, and AC/DC-influenced wedges of star-spangled noise and uh, albums containing a lot of covers. Granted, for the most part I've always been a sucker for a girl with an electric guitar, but Jett was the real deal, coming into her own long about the time of 1983's "Album," despite hitting big a few years previous with "I Love Rock N' Roll," armed with an arsenal of Les Paul Juniors, clad in tight black leather or spandex, Converse high-tops, long raven tresses and, oh those eyes - she was truly dazzling (sigh)... Anyway, this double-disc collection gathers most of the ex-Runaway's videos, some concert clips and TV ads, as well as preview interview footage with dame Jett and musical partner Kenny Laguna.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection!.......2005-08-14

This 2 DVD set features Joan Jett and Kenny Laguna introducing each video and talking about old stories surrounding the video shoots. Priceless stuff! Included in the Bonus footage is Joan Jett and Kenny Laguna Skydiving for the first time! Totally entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars A Mother's Undying Love.......2006-11-09

This 'G' rated movie is unforgettable for anyone who knows what it is to love a child, especially an adoptive child. A kindly - no, a saintly - black woman finds an abandoned white baby boy near her very remote homestead and takes him in and raises him as one of her own children. It is not until about twelve years later that the 19th Century South African Census authorities discover it. Since a white boy went missing in the forest nine years before, they assume this is the boy and take him from the loving Fiela and place him with his 'real' family.

This family exploits him and thinks of him as little more than slave labor for their failing farming venture. Meanwhile, Fiela is beside herself from the loss of her white son and leaves no stone unturned to try to find him. However, she is black, and of no status in the white society. From her behavior, her palpable grieving for her son, both my wife and I felt almost as if we'd lost a son that way! It takes more than ten years for everything to resolve itself, but when the movie ends you'll fell very satisfied. Of the 1700+ live-action movies I have dealing with children, there is no mother who surpasses Fiela in her love for her child. It is, simply, a tangible love that will touch your heart.
