Despite box-office failure and the highly publicized fatigue of its star at the time of its fall 2001 release, Glitter is a surprisingly effective vehicle for pop diva Mariah Carey, who will delight her many fans in her appealing screen debut. The standard rags-to-riches plot unfolds with the predictability of falling dominoes, but there's simple, infectious charm in Carey's portrayal of Billie Frank, an urban thrush who's discovered by ace club DJ Dice (Max Beesley) and rises to stadium-filling stardom in the post-disco New York of 1983. One hoary subplot works (Billie's quest for her long-lost mother) and another doesn't (Dice's debt to a threatening rival), while Carey plays a variant of herself with a gentle blend of vulnerability and good-girl fortitude. With a bright supporting cast and a stellar soundtrack, this movie didn't deserve the bad rap it got, and like her determined yet delicate character, Carey emerges unscathed despite considerable odds against her. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars SO HOT TAMALEEEE BABY!!!.......2007-07-01

THIS MOVIE IS A PERFECT 5! MARIAH LOOKED GREAT!!! AND SHE CAN REALLY ACT!!! IF YOU LOVE MARIAH'S MUSIC YOU WILL LOVE THIS MOVIE. MARIAH REALLLY DID A WONDEFUL JOB IN THIS MOVIE. LOTS OF MARIAH!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Very sowwie Mariah... 1 star for this one.......2007-03-17

Dont take me wrong I do love Mariah but this movie is not making any sense to me I mean Mariah doesnt seem very interest to "play" in this movie!!! This movie is all about music music music music music repeating over and over again nothing new nothing has been changed... come on!!! but then Mariah seem to be better in another movie called Wisegirls but again I honestly dont think that Mariah should be an actress herself I mean I think she is better off to be a singer instead of playing movies. Wisegirls she seem like she wanted to have the "attention" and "show-off" like saying in her mind: "Look at me I am in the movie!" I honestly deep in my heart she dont need to be playing in any movies unless she stands up and do her "work" with her actions in the movies not like this and Wisegirls movies. I feel bad for giving this movie a 1 star but I had to say what's my opinion about this movie anyways. Wisegirls was alittle better than this one!!

2 out of 5 stars Ridiculous movie.......2007-03-10

I personally love Mariah, but she makes fool of herself in this movie. Babe, stop acting and just stick to singing: that's what you're doing best!!

5 out of 5 stars A Movie Lost In The Midst of Bad P.R. and Tragedy.......2007-02-07

I assure you that this movie is not the worst thing ever created on film like people tried to make it out to be. If Mariah didn't have a meltdown and 9/11 didn't happen then I honestly believe that this movie would have been a moderate success. Not a blockbuster or Oscar contender but enjoyable. The script in this movie sucked. Mariah had her few moments when she showed she could act but I admit there are quite more than a few flaws to this movie. I grew up in the 80's so I could identify where Glitter was trying to take us. The younger generation (preteens-teens) might not understand the 80's as well as thirty-somethings would. After all the flaws of Glitter I do accept it for what it is, a story of a young talented lady trying to make it in the music biz and getting pulled into several different directions at the same time. And yes the the soundtrack is so cool and Mariah still sings her heart out in this one. I mean come on how could anyone not identify with the song "Reflections"? Please give this movie a chance and buy the soundtrack too.

4 out of 5 stars A good movie that got a bad rap..........2007-01-17

...because of when it was released! The movie was released the Friday after 09/11/2001. Because of that incident, no one was going to anything that week. Especially places where large numbers of people were gathered. We were all tuned into our television sets trying to find out what was going on in New York. This movie comes out that Friday and is lost. Critics pan it and it fades into oblivion. The movie isn't that bad! I've seen much worse on the big screen---and these were hits. I think the timing was just bad for this movie. And it didn't help that it was set in the decade of decadence and excess (the 80's) in New York. Who wanted to see NYC like that on the big screen after the devastation of 9/11? We were greiving for NYC at that time. We surely didn't care that Mariah Carey had a movie coming out. I suggest you give this movie a try. It's not a masterpeice by any stretch of the imagination, but it's fun to watch. Besides the music is hot, it's retro, and it gives us some insight into the workings of the music biz.

Description

The early 1970s were very good to glam rockers Slade. In their native Britain, they invaded the charts with 17 Top 20 hits, including six at #1. Devoted fans couldn't play Slade's anthem-rock loud enough, and the band played to packed clubs and concert halls all across the country. Like The Beatles and The Who, Slade too was seduced by the call of celluloid. In 1975, the band answered that call, starring in the critically lauded Slade in Flame. A darker kind of Spinal Tap, the film features the band starring as a fictitious version of themselves, while taking a gritty, realistic look at the underbelly of the music industry, where hustlers, sharks and managers prey upon hot new bands.

• First U.S. release of this cult DVD! • This film was made in 1974, following the success of the Beatles' A Hard Days Night and The Monkees Head scripted rock films. • Features Slade hits "How Does It Feel?" and "Far, Far Away." • Includes an enlightening 50-minute interview with Slade's lead singer/guitarist and British rock icon Noddy Holder.

5 out of 5 stars Them Monkeys Can Swing!.......2005-05-13

This DVD is strictly a Slade fan collectible. The DVD itself has some problems ie. sound, picture grainy at points. BUT - for the true Slade fan look past this! The story of two bands competing with each other and then becoming what is Slade is truly entertaining (the premise is that the story while fiction is loosely based on fact). The Noddy interview is worth the price of the DVD alone. SLADE ROCKS - FOREVER!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Hmmmm.......2005-02-05

I've only watched this film once and I don't have any Slade in my collection but based on the "Hard Days Night" reference in the original review I expected a higher quality film. The pacing in this film is pretty bad. The video is dark in many spots and the audio is horrible. It's interesting to watch but I think you had to be there the first time to understand the "greatness" of this film.

5 out of 5 stars "8 Mile" is "Flame's" Love Child........2004-12-29

Having only heard Slade's standards "Cum On Feel the Noize," and "Mama Weer All Crazee Now," someone had taken a real gamble giving "Flame" to me as a Solstice gift. But she knew about my taste for, in her words: "A load of ugly f*ckers from the seventies who play good, loud music." I gave it a viewing once, then twice, then three times...

My verdict: "Flame" is good, raunchy fun. I got a good laugh watching the prologue featuring the group as a middling wedding band. I became entranced with the opening track, the wistful "How Does it Feel?" By the time the wedding band got in a row with rival band The Undertakers, I was sold.

I'm not at all surprised that "Flame" and Eminem's "8 Mile" follow the same "fortune, glory and ill-gotten gains" formula. What surprises me is that two films dealing with two disparate genres, two different neighborhoods, and two different subcultures took said formula and became gritty, offbeat masterpieces. Noddy's "Stoker" and Em's "B. Rabbit" are both rough, gritty and driven characters with endearing character quirks. Jim Lea, the Mehki Pfieffer of this earlier film is the perfect foil for Noddy as the partner in crime who occasionally butts heads with his mate. And the shootout at the Thames Estuary pirate radio station is every bit as surprising and hilarious as when "Cheddar Bob" shot himself in the bollocks in the Eminem vehicle.
Enough comparisons, on with the story. After the wedding band ditches their slobby frontman Jack Daniels (Alan Lake) in favor of ex-Undertaker Stoker, and in turn get ditched by their shifty Gangland manager Ron Harding (Johnny Shannon), they are quickly snapped up by two stuffy corporate opportunists played with cold deviousness by British All-Star Tom Conti and Kenneth Colley (known to Star Wars fans far and wide as Admiral Piett!) Conti and Piett-- erm, Colley repackage the quartet as "Flame", who spends their 15 minutes of fame conquering the UK. Just as they plan to invade the States, Gangster Ron and Jack Daniels (paging Wink from 8 Mile!) conspire to wrangle their share of the profits, and the phenomenon. What ensues is a duel of words and muscle between Blue Collar Gangsters and White Collar Suits as "Flame" crash, burn, and prepare to fizzle out.
The members of Slade hold their own alongside Conti and Admiral-- ah, Colley, most especially Noddy and Jim. Don Powell's charming performance as the shy, down-to-earth drummer is made all the more poignant due to the fact that he suffered from memory retention lapses in real life. Dave Hill is the resident comic relief as he looks up women's skirts and bolts Noddy/Stoker into his casket during the Undertaker gig. For all the world Dave Hill looks like a bucktoothed Davy Jones.
It's astonishing to see how many of the performers - along with the writer and director - saw their careers take flight after this obscure, yet surprisingly well executed film.
A minor greivance: Good as I am with picking up British accents (A damn sight better than most Yanks,) it would have helped to have some caption option on the DVD to keep up with the North England accents.
As for extras, the DVD boasts a lovely 50 minute interview with "sing-guh" Noddy Holder, circa 2002. With his wild grey curls, the aged Noddy looks like a cross between "Doctor Who's" Tom Baker and Gareth Thomas from "Blake's 7!" ;-)
I proudly place this music gem in my DVD library next to "24 Hour Party People," "Hedwig," and "Pink Floyd - The Wall."

4 out of 5 stars Flame are gonna be big stars..............2004-11-12

Slade. A group that was HUGE in England in the 70's and all we really heard of them here in the states were the covers by Quiet Riot and "Keep Your Hands Off of My Power Supply" LP years later. Imports were way too costly then and I was just a teenager. So they remained a mystery to me like all the other U.K. glam rockers who failed to raise any interest or hits over here (T. Rex, Quatro, Mud, Wizzard, etc..). When I heard this movie was seeing the light of day in the U.S. thanks to some words by Classic Rock magazine (another Import), I had to check it out. As others have pointed out, this is not "A Hard Day's Night" or anything happy or silly that The Beatles have put out at the time. This story is of the other side of the Rock 'n' Roll business, the "dark" side. It does make one want to give up on the "R 'n' R dream" though. It is not a movie that you will watch again and again but is worthy of a once through. The music is good. Trademark Slade sound. One of the extras on the dvd is an interview with the lead singer/guitarist of Slade, Nodddy Holder in which he discusses all to do with the bands popularity and the reason for the choice of story for this film. Interesting to listen to him, definitely a bonus to the disc. The movie is average, watching musicians try to be actors and it does show. The 4 stars are for the courage to go against the grain and make this type of movie instead of acting like a bunch of clowns. The movie represents more a solid 3 though....

4 out of 5 stars So Far, So Good!.......2004-09-08

Finally available in the US in DVD format! Boy, does this one bring back memories! Admittedly, at the time of its release, Slade In Flame wasn't exactly what I was expecting from Slade. The sudden departure from the hallmark sound that had made them a fixture at the top of the UK charts was surprising, to say the least. The stomp and shout backgrounds were replaced by a horn section and a piano, and while Noddy's raw vocals are still quite prominent, it was clear that the group was making a conscious effort to put some creative distance between the new album and those that came before it.

But like all of Slade's material, it took no time for Slade In Flame to grow on me, and I found myself wishing that I could get my hands on the film. I had to wait almost 30 years, but it was worth it! The boys do a fine job of portraying an average backcountry band that makes it big only to self destruct upon attaining the success they once desired. Seedy managers, band rivalries, internal strife between band members, as well as conflict with their girlfriends, all comes across quite convincingly, especially when you consider that none of the members of the group were trained actors at the time. The heavy Midlands accents in the film may be a little difficult for us Yanks who are more accustomed to the slower, less idiomatic London accent, but in my opinion, it doesn't take too long to get used to it.

The highlight of this DVD release is the lengthy interview with Noddy Holder, which was done in 2002. You can tell that Noddy loves to talk about those days, and he does it with candor, humor and wisdom. Definitely my DVD find of the month. Possibly the year!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good show, poor DVD quality - for die-hard fans only!.......2005-04-18

This DVD has two major drawbacks in quality department - poor sound and weird video editing. Individual instruments are lost in audio mix, Suzi's bass can be heard only during her solo, and all in all one can hardly hear treble or bass - only middle range frequencies.

The video editing is done MTV-style: quick takes, fast cuts preventing to see what's going on, no long shots, if there are some close-ups, they are really close - only the face is seen. I've got an impression that the camera man got some new modern equipment and he tried every trick in the book with it, while the editor decided that several different shots per second is quite normal for live rock performance. As a result after 5 minutes of this video motley my eyes got tired, and very soon I've got a real headache!

Artists like Suzi do not need all this modern video extravaganza - her music is a little bit old-fashioned (and we love her for this!), and her show should be shot accordingly. The show itself was quite good, and it can be seen in the second half of the program when the editor slows down a little bit and allows us to see the performance (at last!).

As for b/w archive footage and old video footage embedded by the editor into the show itself, frankly I would prefer to see it in bonus materials: complete versions of old videos and archive footage.

Five stars for the show and only one star for DVD quality ends in resultant three stars.

5 out of 5 stars REAL LIVE ROCK SHOW.......2005-03-25

The thing that disappointed me is that this dvd is...too short.
Great Quatro live performace. Rock Hard is better live than the studio version; the Can The Can intro, where Quatro plays drum solo, is fantastic and only this, worth the price of this dvd.
Very good version of: She's in love with you, Stumblin'in.
The Quatro' bass solo, also is good, very good.
This a real live concert, with real players nothing has been changed in studio, like it happens in many live shows put in cd or dvd.
It's a dvd for people who like real rock.

3 out of 5 stars Bon, mais un peu moyen.......2004-12-02

Les titres: The Wild One, Rock Hard, Can The Can, 48 Crash, Stumblin in, She's in love with you, Tear me appart, If you can give me love Glycerine queen Devil Gate drive (dans le desorde) Voila un appercu d'un concert actuel de Suzi Quatro.

If you want contact me, no problem. I'm a fan of Suzi Quatro

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Some good, mostly low budget.......2007-06-29

Overall, the video content is pretty low-budget and un-watchable (for me.)

The RuPaul video with Rusty Joiner is excellent, and if you are a RuPaul or Rusty Joiner fan, a must-have. (It is the Remix, not the original version with the verse of the song. However, there is tons more Rusty in this remix. He's dancing, and lip-sync-ing, and tearing those scrubs off. Super!)

Most of the videos are by people you most likely haven't heard of here in the United States, and were boring for me. The video "Shut up and Sleep With Me" was very entertaining for me, and there is a delightfully entertaining video called "Up and Down" that takes place in a laundromat, complete with campy choreography. The Weather Girls appear in a decent video of a great song.

The rest of the videos were pretty unimpressive for me. A promising song entitled "I Fell in Love with a Starship Trooper" is just a string of bad video shots of a live performance edited together. The Village People video looks like it was filmed in a hotel conference room, and probably would only interest Village People Fans. One of the videos is a We Are the World-type anthem with an Egyptian Theme. It was fine.

This isn't really that expensive, so it may be worth it for you to see sexy Rusty Joiner dancing shirtless with jeans and a cowboy hat, the campy "Up and Down", the weirdly entertaining "Shut Up and Sleep with me", and the Weather Girls song. However, if you're on the fence, not a Rusty fan, or hoping for a great campy collection of videos, look elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars (cheesy) drag videos.......2005-11-27

On the one hand, this was a historical and diverse look at drag in video over the past few decades. On the other hand, this is some cheesy disc that one can see, but not hear, in any noisy gay male bar. The music consists of watered-down house and predictable techno. Fans of the film "Priscilla: Queen of the Desert" and the compact disc "Dancing Queen" may really like this DVD.

This is not drag-exclusive: there where hunky male torsos in almost every video. I do worry that this falls into Esther Newton's idea that gay men must either have hot bodies or be witty and do drag. It was a type of male butch-femme that doesn't recognize the diversity of gender expression among gay men.

The videos showed men caressing women and gender-conforming men caressing drag queens, but no gender-conforming guys caressing each other. A journalist once said, "The world is like Will & Grace when it comes to gay men: ask, tell, but don't see." There's still a way in which man-to-man action is "the love that dare not speak its name." It's sad to see this being the case in the 21st century.

The best video came from Dana International. I first heard about her in the gay studies anthology "Speaking in Queer Tongues." She got realness! You'd never know she was born male, but then again, the clothes around her equator were not revealing. The message of freedom and the Middle Eastern-accented music was touching. She must be a star!

Finally, this film may make some people sad. Many of the performers here have passed away (Divine, one of the Weather Girls, the Leather Man from the Village People). This disc hints at the lost era of the 1970s.

GLITZ, BLITZ & HITZ (SWEET)

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars For such a Fun band, this is a BORING DVD.......2006-12-27

I bought this believing that it was chalked full of "full length" videos of the sweet performing. Instead we get three very boring men discussing a very small amount of information on the band. The three men consist of one of the song writers, the guitarist and an early manager. The song writer has more gravel to his voice than Tom Waits, the guitarist is sadly very bloated, and the manager is slouched on a sofa wearing khaki shorts complaining about how the band should have gotten into arena rock. (He's the worst of the three!)

Just as I was enjoying "wig wam bam" when the video cuts off and back to the chat! No little Willy video at all!
They also don't include more than 30 secs of the
"love is like oxygen" video. That's sick to fool the fans into thinking they're buying a music video/concert dvd when it's simply a lame documentary.
Don't buy it, watch the videos of youtube or buy a dvd from the UK.

3 out of 5 stars shoddy treatment of AWESOME material.......2005-03-23

Man, is this one ANNOYING DVD. The people at CREEM have some absolutely incredible vintage Sweet footage to draw on, and THIS is the best they could do?!?? I'd horsewhip the designers of this DVD if I had a horse. The excellent clips of The Sweet are buried among long, detailed interviews (that would have made for great bonus material), and there's no quick way to get to the music -- you just have to fast-forward through all the bloody yackin'. That being said, any serious fan of The Sweet will want this until (or if) a more intelligent treatment of this material is available -- it does include awesome contemporary footage, and most of it is relatively complete (but not all -- "Wig Wam Bam," for example, is cut in half to work in MORE CHAT). Basically, the vintage clips rate 5 stars -- their presentation in this DVD rates about a 2. Shame on CREEM for this one -- although I'll still hope for a new, revised edition in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Great band, shame about the DVD ..........2004-07-22

How do you make a dull documentary about The Sweet? It would seem difficult considering what a nutty bunch of guys Sweet were but these folks have managed to pull it off.

The main problem here is too much talkin' and not enough rockin'. The Sweet were a wild band but you'd hardly know it from the meagre visual evidence provided.

What little there is though is great and well worth the price. It's just that it could have been so much better.

3 out of 5 stars Misleadingly packaged documentary.......2004-07-05

I was very excited when I came across this DVD. It is presented by Creem magazine, who did a fantastic job with the Iggy and the Stooges DVD recently. The blurb on the back led me to expect complete performaces of each song. Wrong. This is a 90 min. "Behind the Music"-type television documentary. If you're a fan of the band, it's interesting enough to watch once. I was most disappointed with the poor-quality lip-sync performance clips. Cool to see a Sweet DVD on the U.S. market, but it could have been so much better. Chalk up another reason to buy a region-free dvd player...

4 out of 5 stars Worth Seeing but could have been Better.........2004-04-21

I think this is the only Dvd available in the US format of "Sweet". I love all their songs and wanted to see some live footage of them, as I was too young to have seen them in the 70's. This video was a bit slow moving with too much talking and repetitive comments by the bands manager & producer. Sweets gutarist "Andy Scott" is also interviewed , but where are the interviews of lead singer Brian Connolly(who has passed on to Rock n' Roll Heaven) and the other band members Mick Tucker and Steve Priest? It would have been more interesting to hear from them. It was interesting to see how their music changed from a very innocent Bubble gum sound of their early days to the Hard glam rockers they became..

The music is the best part of this dvd, but there should have put more music clips, and why didn't they make the music clips with easier access, like when I want to watch "Fox on the Run" I don't want to listen to the manager guy talk for 5mins before the song starts. Also a couple of clips are cut short like "Love is like Oxygen" and it was cool, that was disappointing, Yikes!! But seeing the very sexy Brian Connolly and guy's in those tight pants, all glam,Big heels, & hair flying, singing great songs like "Action", "Fox On the Run", "BallRoom BLitz", "The Sixteens", "Teenage Rampage"etc.., made this Dvd well worth buying for any Sweet fan wanting to see them in their hey day.I can only imagine how good they would have been in concert!! It's easy to see how they influenced 80's Heavy Metal music and glam rockers yet to come. They had their own sound & style and made their mark in rock and roll history as one of the best bands of the 70's. I would like to see a better collection put together of them hopefully soon! I think Sweet deserves better than this, but I still really enjoyed it..

Product Description

"Mesmerizing electric advertisements, alluring scenes of the glorious Midwest with its sparkling rivers, majestic mountains, jewel-like lakes, historic monuments, cities and towns meet your eyes in this marvelous set of DVDs. The DVDs do not stop with merely enchanting you with these fascinating visuals, they provide an edifying peek into the charming world of outdoors advertising and the newspaper industry. We also get a good idea of how the Rock Island Railroad Company contributed to the economy of the country. All the films in this set carry a promotional tone and are consequently upbeat and exciting. Produced by masters such as Jam handy and Josef von Sternberg, these films are stacked with loads of statistical data and graphic visuals, which render them both delightful and informative. The narration in the clip "Midwest Holiday" is especially charming as is the glorious colored footage of the mid-western states. I was enchanted by the films on this DVD and am convinced that it will be a boon to all collectors of historic DVDS on travel and industry."

5 out of 5 stars Don't Let The Desription Fool You.......2006-07-21

Something clearly is going on with the product description here which has nothing to do with the DVD set itself. Not that I'm complaining. I bought this because I was very happy with the Ohio DVD in the same series and wanted to learn more about the midwest. This DVD delivered with some of the most breathtaking vistas I've ever seen and really gives a great overview of the American heartland. That doesn't explain why the sales page talks about electric lights, but since I got what I wanted I'm giving it five stars.

I bought this DVD expecting at least SOME production value and some entertainment value.
I wasted my money - this is an amateur production which leaves a lot to be desired! I certainly wont bother with future Glitter Award productions!
NOT recommended unless you have money to burn and just want to fill your shelf with DVDs!

3 out of 5 stars Could Have Done So Much More.......2005-10-20

Whilst I enjoyed the insight into Slade, I am left a little dissapointed, that the producers could have done more with this product. No song is played in its entirity, and we listen to half a dozen so called critics disect the Slade singles. No sound clips of TAK ME BAK 'OME, CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE and 'EVERYDAY' The critics seem to omit the issue of Slade deviating from their foot stomping patch by making a critically acclaimed film (Flame). Also very little from the Band themselves as far as interviews go. But still at least some recognition for the many hours of joy they brought me in my youth. For the fans only, for those wanting to know more about Slade... you had to be there.

    2 out of 5 stars Paul Neal.......2005-08-18

Very dissapointing .Where are all the complete film clips of there singles.I think the promo for this is very misleading

2 out of 5 stars A mediocre documentary with little music.......2005-07-30

Those expecting full song videos and interviews with Slade band members will be disappointed. There are brief concert and television clips interspersed with short interview clips with music critics and other band members commenting on Slade songs and offering some insight into their musical style. It does get across the band's impact on rock music of the 70's and big Slade fans will want this DVD. The DTS and 5.1 soundtrack is ultimately a waste since music is at a minimum on this DVD.

    Description

The Sweet are one of the only `Glam Rock' bands to have had chart success in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Though very much part of the Glam Rock explosion there is so much more to them than this and their timeless and exciting music is testimony to this fact, as is their influence on punk. This DVD contains new and unseen performances by the band as well as other classic footage that captures the spirit and range of this unique group. So whether you want to relive the glory days or gain a greater understanding of a period in pop music history, Here and Now is a must see. It's still a `Sweet Life'.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A wasted opportunity. Why can't they get it right?.......2004-03-10

The Sweet is one of the best rock bands in the history of music. Video footage of the "mighty" Sweet has always been sort of a rarity. Truly, a major event! At last, we finally get the chance to enjoy the glory of watching The Sweet in action in DVD format, or so we think...

Major disappointment! Whoever produced this DVD did a terrible job. For starters, the sound could have been much better. Perhaps it would have even been valid to re-record it over the video images. They left the original poor sound from the original ancient tapes.

My biggest complain is what happens between songs. They don't let you see the start of the video for various seconds (it feels like an eternity!). I don't like missing out valuable images without reason. It takes forever until you actually see the band. The end of every song is also abruptly cut off. Instead they show the same images and the respective song title.

All the mishaps aside, you can truly appreciate what a great band The Sweet was. Brian Connolly giving his best during "Fever of Love", Mick Tucker pounding the drums in "Sixties Man", Steve Priest soulfully singing and playing his bass, and a young --once a great guitarist-- Andy Scott playing with aggression and taste.

Now on to the second section: Andy Scott's Sweet. It hurts to say it, but Andy Scott looks pathetically fat, rigid and tired (totally opposite to the personality he once had). He has really no point in re-doing the old classics with his new band. They do it competently (singer/bassist Jeff Brown does a very good job), but NOTHING can compare to the real thing, so why do it? Why tampering with the original creations? Totally senseless if you ask me. His newest Afterlife stuff does not do much for me either, truth be said. The biography section leaves a lot to be desired. It doesn't even mention who are the players in the newest videos.

I was very disappointed with this gem, still I like it because I can still see some of the "real" Sweet, one of the best and most influential bands of all time. I'm still hopeful somebody will finally get it right and give us fans a real good DVD with The Sweet. Until then, I guess this is the best we can hope for, oh well...

    2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed..........2003-12-23

I bought this DVD with great anticipation being a SWEET fan for a long long time. On the first part of the DVD you see videos of the original band. Although it's nice to see the lads and how they were then, it's terrible to see the really bad picture quality for which no restoration effort has been given, not even video noise reduction!. The sound is awfull. They could have at least transfered the sound from the CDs and matched them to the videos. Instead, they transfered directly from tape to DVD with all the limitions, bad s/n ratio etc, etc. I could have done the same with a $50 buget... Part two is the "new sweet" doing old sweet songs. the videos were recorded in a studio no larger than my basement... the sound is good but who are these guys? And as we found out with ELO, you can't replace the front-man it just doesn't sound the same and it doesn't work. The only interresting part is when they present new material...Unfortunatelly just highlights of the new songs about a minute each...
As for the photo gallery, let me laugh... It's just stills taken from the videos as if the lads and every one they knew never owned a camera...
No interviews with surviving band members, live shots, nothing

I would recomend this only to fans who must own absolutelly EVERYTHING that is SWEET. Put your money in the original brittish CDs instead and use your imagination for the video...It's bound to be much better.
