Ingrid Bergman gives one of her memorable, haunting, and haunted performances as an amnesiac chosen by a White Russian general (Yul Brynner) in 1928 to play the part of Anastasia, the long-rumored but missing survivor of the Bolsheviks' murderous attack on the czar's family. The twist is that Bergman's mystery woman seems to know more about the lost Anastasia than she is told. Based on the play by Marcelle Maurette and Guy Bolton, this film--directed by Anatole Litvak (Out of the Fog)--really does get under one's skin, not least of all because of its intriguing story but even more because of the strong chemistry between Bergman and Brynner. --Tom Keogh
Description
An expatriate White Russian general sets in motion a grand hoax after he meets a destitute woman on the banks of the Seine River in Paris. He trains her to impersonate the missing princess but soon begins to feel she may be the real Anastasia. Ultimately, the truth can only be decided by one person Anastasia's grandmother, the Dowager Empress.

4 out of 5 stars It was worth it as a movie rental........2007-07-02

I just watched this movie last night. I have to say that the middle portion lingered a lot but the ending was quite fascinating. I found myself rewinding the movie to catch certain details that were later replayed in the movie. Like the scene where the main female character gets bumped into as she's walking up the stairs. People who have seen this movie will understand what I'm talking about. I also found it interesting that the two characters (the supposed fraternal twins) wind up enduring the very same fate that they tried to escape as babies. One involving water and the other one, well, it was a bit more gruesome.
This movie really wasn't about gore or something truly scary. To me it was something a bit deeper. For me it was about time lines and how, for some, a destiny is inevitable. And how inexorably determined spirits can cross into the physical world to claim something they feel is theirs.
I didn't think the acting was bad either. It wasn't profound per se. I found humor in Karel Roden's "toilet mouth" outbursts when faced with something overwhelmingly scary. Maybe it's just me but I like it when a woman uses the "F" word. :)
I'd actually like to give this movie "3.5" stars but that option isn't available. So I'm feeling generous and am giving it 4. I'm glad I rented it. As the movie climaxed to explain all the details toward the end, I thought it was quite creative. No regrets here for having rented it.

4 out of 5 stars A deeper darker look at the Final Destination concept, where death takes the form of an abusive parent........2007-06-30

However death is a little more patient than in Final Destination he'll give you 40 years or so, and if you don't follow your destination death might just leave you alone.
I read a review of The Abandoned in the August 2007 issue of Fangoria #265 under the VIDEO EYE OF DR. CYCLOPS section. I actually have never seen him give a rating over 2 1/2 eyeballs out of 4 that I can recall and I've been getting Fangoria now for about a year and a half to two years, so when i saw him give 3 1/2 eyeballs on the cyclops rating and made it video of the month i had to pick it up. I figured either it's gonna be good and I'd have a good reference for horror, or even better all the movies he thought sucked maybe were actually great.
At first i was hesitant, ok so she runs away from this house crosses a lake runs all day and boom she's back at the house she started at, Blair Witch Project anyone. The above referenced house that her parents owned in 1966 is surrounded on all sides by water only way out is a bridge that resembles the bridge in Evil Dead 2, Who are these peoples real estate agents? Perhaps the same that sold the Amity ville house and just relocated to Russia. The house basically eats her brother, I was waiting to hear Kathleen Turners raspy voice from Monster house. Then i stopped trying to find things wrong, what horror movie can't you poke holes in and how hard must it be to at least not be subconsciously influenced by other horror movies i mean everything has been done, and writer director Nacho Cerdà does put his own spin on this.
I can also see what DR. CYCLOPS means when in his review he says that "the film's deliberate pacing (particularly during its wandering about in circles midsection) might annoy ADD-afflicted viewers in search of typical hollywood horror hokum". Not this viewer I'm always looking for something different and i wasn't let down. This movie is best to not analyze until it's over and you look at it as a whole without breaking it down into parts.
So, the plot it's pretty simple, SIKE, it's anything but. An adopted woman from Ca returns to where she was born in Russia seeking information about her mother. She leaves behind a daughter of her own who she briefly argues with about having her older boyfriend in the house.
A man she meets with in Russia tells her that her mother's house has been left to her.
She is driven to her mother's house by an unknown man in a truck that looks straight out of Jeepers Creepers. Once there the man disappears and soon after she meets another man in the house who is there for the same reasons as her own. Soon ghostly manifestations show up actually more zombie like, well the man (who is this man?) has a gun, so shoot them right, k bang, whoops he shoots the zombie in the leg and he ends up with a bullet in his own leg. This zombie looks allot like him, oh it is him, i know what your thinking and your wrong. I'll say this, it's a good thing he didn't see any zombie movies, if it was me I'd shoot the zombie in the head without hesitation and then the movie would only be about 60mins. What happens after this I'll leave to you.
On a serious note this is a horror movie like a lot of horror movies that just might be trying to say something. Maybe we shouldn't chase the past. Maybe things happen for a reason be it the end of a relationship or growing up without a parents more literally. Perhaps things are better left alone and we should move on and not dwell on or dig up the past, especially if your last name is Kaidavosky and your family tree resembles the tree from Poltergeist, it might just be better to be "Abandoned"!
I've heard negative things from the After Dark Horrorfest movies i personally found the majority to be pretty good. Other than this Gravedancers, Unrest, The Hamiltons, and Reincarnation was also a bit freaky. They all try to be scary and take themselves seriously.
I'll be interested in catching some of the new one's in After Dark Horrorfest 2, in the meantime check this one out, let me know what you think.
One other thing The Dolby Digital 5.1 Track also gave my Sonus Faber speakers a pretty good work out.

1 out of 5 stars I hate horror movies........2007-06-28

I hate horror movies. Horror movies should be banned from civilized
society. Yes, that means the U.S. too, theoretically.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2007-06-25

I didn't know what to expect when I put in the Abandoned. 2 other movies from the horrorfest that I'd watched were good, but not great. Also the older protagonists were a welcome change from the usual teenage/early 20's players that are the formula these days.
The setting is the creepiest house you've ever seen. I was scared as soon as the main character arrives on the grounds of the old family house she has inherited. This was one of the few movies that actually had me hiding under the covers as I watched.
The story was unsettling, the direction and cinematography were excellent. I loved it.

3 out of 5 stars Abandon all hope..........2007-06-23

They say, when your times up, your time is up. Well this movie shows it well. No matter what you try to do, eventually the past will come to haunt you. Some creepy moments in this atmospheric adventure. Although, many questions are still unanswered. For example, what were the motives for the murders? All in all, a good suspenseful movie, at a slow pace. Good acting and interesting enough to keep you on your toes. See this one, and dont let this movie on the shelf, abandonned:)

Throughout The Straight Story, 73-year-old Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth) gazes calmly at the night sky, as if the stars were reflections of his own memories. Alvin's eyesight is bad and his daughter (Sissy Spacek) is slightly retarded and unable to drive, so he's traveling from Laurens, Iowa to Mt. Zion, Wisconsin on a riding John Deere lawn mower. It's slow going, so there's plenty of time to stop for the night and ponder the cosmos. Alvin's journeying to visit his ailing brother; they haven't spoken in years, and it's time to make peace. Along the way, he befriends a variety of nice folks, and you have to ask yourself... Is this really a David Lynch movie?

It's a miracle that this G-rated Disney film was made by a director whose work is often described as twisted and bizarre. But Lynch is too complex an artist to be labeled, and he brings charm, grace, and kindness to his fact-based telling of The Straight Story--not to mention a serenity rarely found in movies anymore. It's a film of moments--funny, odd, quietly spiritual--and this simple tale of a man, a lawnmower, and rural hospitality becomes a genuine Lynchian odyssey, unlike any film you've seen but as welcoming as a cup of lemon tea with honey. Best of all, it's a fitting tribute to the career of veteran stuntman-actor Farnsworth who, at age 79, plays Alvin Straight to sheer perfection, his face a subtle roadmap to a broad spectrum of emotional destinations. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Based on the true story that captured the hearts of America, THE STRAIGHT STORY is one of those rare films offering powerful, uplifting entertainment for audiences of all ages. Directed by acclaimed director David Lynch (WILD AT HEART, MULHOLLAND DRIVE), this gentle, inspiring film celebrates the human spirit. Richard Farnsworth (MISERY, THE NATURAL) stars as Alvin Straight -- a no-nonsense man who has never been one to lean on others. Now at an age when his eyesight denies him the ability to drive and walking is accomplished only with the help of two canes, Alvin lives a quiet life with his daughter Rose (Sissy Spacek). But when the call comes that Alvin's estranged brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton, THE GREEN MILE) has suffered a debilitating stroke, Alvin embarks on a dangerous and emotional journey to make amends. With little money, but plenty of patience and tenacity, he climbs aboard his 1966 John Deere lawnmower and plots the 260-mile course from his small Iowa town to Lyle's home in Wisconsin. Filmed along the actual route that the real Alvin Straight traveled in 1994, THE STRAIGHT STORY is a heartwarming and poignant drama chronicling Alvin's six-week odyssey and the many lives he touches along the way.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful film........2007-06-15

What can I possibly add to the praising wording that the majority of these reviewers already have put forth? Well, I would simply just like to say that I believe that this movie has a very rare quality. It is very down to earth in a natural and liberating way and is basically just a story about this old man who wants to make up with his brother, which he haven't seen for ten years, before its to late.

He has no drivers license and not much money, so he decides to make the long journey across America, on an old lawn mover - and as one discovers along the way, he has really made up his mind to fulfil his decision - and that even in spite of many of the peoples kind help, which includes an offer to drive him to his destination - because as I see it; that there is almost an symbolic meaning to his way of doing it, which you'll find out at the very end of the film.

Sounds boring??? Anything but... this is simply beautiful and a great and very different effort from director David Lynch. This film is almost magical in its simplicity and complete matter of course. Just check it out for yourself. If you enjoyed "Round About Smith" - well then this film could appeal to you, although that there really isn't any directly comparison.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-05-26

I consider this a classic story since it reminds me of growing up in upstate New York. You can't help but end up loving this character.

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind.......2007-05-20

I enjoyed this movie for many reasons. The acting is natural, as are the actors. It is a movie I can watch with my grandchildren and not be embarrassed by the content. The Straight Story is touching, warm, real and done with intelligence.

This is a movie I will watch several times without tiring of it; there is something new to see each time I play it. The Straight Story shows the wisdom, value and knowledge older people have and this is something totally ignored by our society - a culture that chases after the young, who chase after who-knows-what.

Bravo to all who created this art piece.

5 out of 5 stars A great movie EVERYONE should see........2007-05-13

A great family movie. Dont expect any crashes, explosions, or special effects. A true story about a simple man on a quest to visit his dying brother. This movie needs to be seen from beginning to end, so don't start it unless you have the time to watch all of it. The director did not allow a chapter guide in the DVD for this reason.

5 out of 5 stars The Straight Story.......2007-05-12

It was a heartwarming story, like a book and movie should be.

If you don't think Austin Powers is one of the funniest movies of the 1990s, maybe you should be packed into a cryogenic time-chamber and sent back to the decade whence you came. Perhaps it was the 1960s--the shag-a-delic decade when London hipster Austin Powers scored with gorgeous chicks as a fashion photographer by day, crime-fighting international man of mystery by night. Yeah, baby, yeah! But when Powers's arch nemesis, Dr. Evil, puts himself into a deep-freeze and travels via time-machine to the late 1990s, Powers must follow him and foil Evil's nefarious scheme of global domination. Mike Myers plays dual roles as Powers and Dr. Evil, with Elizabeth Hurley as his present-day sidekick and karate- kicking paramour. A hilarious spoof of '60s spy movies, this colorful comedy actually gets funnier with successive viewings, making it a perfect home video for gloomy days and randy nights. Oh, behave! --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite comedies.......2007-04-07

I Love owning this film because its one of those silly comedies that just gets funnier to me with each watching. just the anticipation of some of the jokes about to happen can make me laugh. Its like an old friend that you share so many private jokes with.you begin to giggle before its even said, even the really stupidest and corny of the lines. Dr. Evil is just so classic and probably my favorite of all of Myers characters.

Anyway, I think its worth letting it grow on you and watching again every few weeks.

whenever I might need a lift I know I can pop this movie in and its got me smiling again .

5 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy -- But Don't Waste Your Time with the Sequels.......2007-04-02

I actually saw "The Spy Who Shagged Me" first, and was mostly bored throughout. There were maybe two funny scenes. I thought to myself, why do people seem to love "Austin Powers" so much? This was pretty lame.

Several months later I caught bits and pieces of the original ("International Man of Mystery") on TV, and found myself laughing at almost every scene! This is why people loved "Austin Powers"! Eventually I'd seen enough to know I needed to own the movie. I bought it on VHS about 5 years ago, and just got the DVD today. It is an absolute classic. I have to rate it among the best comedies of all time. If you haven't seen it yet, you just don't know what you're missing. It is extremely well-written, clever, witty, and with great delivery and timing.

Now, a warning. It is my opinion that the two sequels to this movie amount to a pile of crap. They are cliché, unoriginal, lame movies. If you like the first one, there is absolutely no guarantee you will like the second or third installments. I would recommend you not waste your time with them, period. I personally just try to pretend they don't even exist. That allows me to continue to love "Austin Powers."

5 out of 5 stars Austin Powers, Man of Mystery Indeed!.......2006-11-10

What a film, brilliantly executed, the gags all reach without dragging on. Mike Meyers has done a good job with the script and characterizations as I really haven't laughed this hard in a while--probably since 'Mars Attacks'.

He manages to spoof 'Bond' films tastefully with a comics' aplomb. I fear however, that the mainstream Tom Cruise/Julia Roberts type of fan will miss the point on this one though.

5 out of 5 stars Give your undercarriage a little bit of a "How's your father?".......2006-11-06

The first Austin Powers flick is still funny today, despite several catchphrases ("Do I make you horny, baby?", "Oh, behave!", etc.) having long since worn out their welcome and a duo of redundant, unimaginative sequels. There are two primary reasons why this movie is comic gold:

1. It's the best James Bond spoof you'll ever see. (You can take my word for it: I'm a HUGE 007 fan.)

2. The dialogue crackles with wit and is delivered flawlessly by the cast.

For reference, check out the scene where Dr. Evil struggles to come up with a contemporary scheme that *hasn't* already happened: "Oh, hell. Let's just do what we always do: hijack some nuclear weapons and hold the world hostage."

Or how about when Austin tries to live dangerously by staying at five while playing Blackjack with Number Two. "I SUGGEST you hit, sir!"

Yes, the movie plays to the adolescent crowd sometimes by throwing in a bunch of sex-related jokes, but at least they're clever and often howlingly funny (especially the Swiss-made penis enlarger bit). To the film's credit, there are no gags that go on for too long and the script is very economical.

Very few comedies have a killer-to-filler ratio as high as the first Austin Powers. Buy this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars FACETIOUS IRREVERENT LIGHT- HEARTED SATIRE & VERY FUNNY TOO!.......2006-05-08

IN A NUTSHELL: A BIT TOO MUCH - BUT SO WHAT IF IT WORKS!

A bit too facetious, a bit too vulgar, a bit too irreverent, and a bit too overdone. Nevertheless, this comedy does work and it pays homage to the original James Bond series, as well as the anglo and american cultures of the 1960s. In the end, "Austin Powers - International Man of Mystery" is simply quite effective in its role as a satirical comedy.

Product Description

Legendary actor Paul Newman (MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE) and Academy Award(R)-nominee Tom Cruise (Best Actor, 1996, JERRY MAGUIRE) ignite the screen in this powerful drama. Brilliantly directed by Martin Scorsese (GANGS OF NEW YORK), Newman re-creates one of his most memorable roles from THE HUSTLER. As Fast Eddie Felson, he still believes that "money won is twice as sweet as money earned." To prove his point, he forms a profitable yet volatile partnership with Vince (Cruise), a young pool hustler with a sexy, tough-talking girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, THE PERFECT STORM). But when Vince's flashy arrogance leads to more than a few lost matches, all bets are off between Eddie and him. THE COLOR OF MONEY will electrify you with its suspenseful story, dazzling cinematography, and dynamic performances.

Amazon.com essential video

Martin Scorsese handles directing duties in this 1986 sequel to the classic 1961 film The Hustler, which marks the return of Paul Newman to the role of pool shark Fast Eddie Felson. Anxious to break into the big time again, Eddie finds a talented protégé (Tom Cruise) to groom; but with the addition of the latter's manipulative girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) and the wild streak in Cruise's character, the trio make for a fascinating portrait in group psychology. The cast is brilliant, the script by Richard Price (Clockers) is a paragon of tightly controlled character study and drama (at least in the film's first half), and Scorsese and cinematographer Michael Ballhaus make an ornate show of the collision and flight of pool balls through space--something of a metaphor for the dynamics among the three principals. The film is generally regarded as weaker in its second half, and rightly so, as everything that was interesting in the first place disappears. Still, Newman won a deserved Oscar for his performance. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Great Product.......2006-03-10

The movie I bought was in fantasic shape I would buy from this shipper again.

4 out of 5 stars Luk itself is an art..........2005-09-13

Scorsese's movies are a warranty of quality, and this one ain't an exception. Newman's performance was exceptional, and if you've seen the Hustler, you can also aprecciate how he has developed. Cruise is actually pretty good when compared to his early work.

Very good 80's classic.

5 out of 5 stars A great sequel.......2005-05-15

A sequel of sorts of Newman's 1960 THE HUSTLER, and a great one. Newman, long out of the pool game now, but still unable to forget it, finds Tom Cruise shooting the daylights out of the game one night and talks the brash young kid into going on the road and becoming a hustler, with Newman as his mentor. Then halfway through the picture Newman gets the bug to play again. He and Cruise meet up in Atlantic City in a match and Newman wins, only he learns that Cruise lost on purpose to collect a bigger debt. Although it's just an example of his pupil learning his lessons too well, Newman is crestfallen; but he refuses to share in the money - thus he's purified under fire and comes away clean. It's a bit of a shock to see the movie shift from Cruise to Newman halfway through, but the ending redeems it. Both Cruise and Newman are simply mesmorizing to watch. Everything in the movie seems to work perfectly: the gritty pool-hall settings, the minor characters (especially Forest Whitaker as a hustler) - everything. Definitely worth a watch.

5 out of 5 stars The Color Of Money: The coolest Scorsese flick.......2005-01-04

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Martin Scorsese is one of the best directors living today. Films like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, The King Of Comedy, and his most recent The Aviator are modern day classics.

The Color Of Money is also on the list of Scorsese's movie portfolio, and it's also one of the best movies made in general. The film stars Paul Newman (The Hustler) and Tom Cruise (Jerry Maguire, Rain Man) as hustlers out to make big cash in the pool halls. Newman reprises his role as Fast Eddie Felson, from 1961's film The Hustler, an oldtimer who is looking for new talent to sport around, Tom Cruise plays his target Vincent, a talented pool player and potential hustler. Felson teaches Vincent and his girl sidekick Carmen (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) everything there is to know about professional hustling and then out they go across country hustling through every state they pass on their way to the big championship in Atlanta. The highlight of the film is in the tense relationship between the desperate Felson, the crazy jealous Vincent and the manipulative Carmen, and how they manage to work as a team.

5 out of 5 stars This DVD needs EXTRAS LIKE THEY DID FOR ROUNDERS.......2004-12-06

Simply put, I'll watch my old VHS tape of this forever. I will not buy a DVD of any mainstream movie that has no extras. GET ON IT ALREADY. Put Newman and Cruise together again for a commentary track. Assemble a handful of pros to do a featurette on it! I've seen other movies revamped two or three times with DVD extras but this one just keeps getting printed with a plain old brown wrapper. Put the Money where your mouth is!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-09

My daughter, who is 7, loves this movie. She first watched it on VHS when she was about 5. It was a bit scary for her then. Fast forward one year and she liked the movie so much that it started to show wear and tear at the beginning. She doesn't watch a lot of TV, but this is a favorite. Other than scary Rasputin, there's nothing offensive in the movie and in the end good conquers evil and everyone is where they are supposed to be. Happy endings abound.

5 out of 5 stars I've always loved this movie!.......2007-02-17

I bought this in stores some time last year (I believe in April) and was ecstatic to have actually found the movie. I originally received th VHS version back in April of 1998 and had almost worn my tape out from watching the movie so much. I happened to think "I wonder if I can find Anastasia on DVD" and at that moment was passing by the only copy in the store.

The movie is great, but not historically accurate. It's a kid's movie, not a history lesson, so keep that in mind if you plan to purchase this. I won't summarize the story but I will say that this movie is easily my Favorite 2D animated movie. Fox did a beautiful job on this and even almost 10 years later I am greatly in love with this movie.

The DVD set contains 2 Discs and has a lovely menu. The only thing that isn't beautiful is the cover which is a hideous malnourished rendering of Anastasia. The original cover was so much better, but as I still have the VHS it's not that much of a bother to me. This DVD also features the straight to video/DVD release of Bartok the Magnificent. It's a very cute movie which revolves around the adorable bat character from the original and has a cute lesson to be learned. Also the bear is voiced by the same guy who voiced Vlad in the movie (I can't remember his name). He's a great singer which just adds to the movie.

A definite recommendation to buy for your children or yourself. It's actually kind of sad to see the 3D dominated world of animation, so it's great that movies like these are still so popular.

5 out of 5 stars Anastasia.......2007-02-08

Family loves it and watches it over and over. Bought the music too.

5 out of 5 stars At the Beginning.......2007-01-20

Amazing song. Anyway, I simply LOVE this movie. It has it all; action, romance, comedy...I have watched this movie so many times. It has such a fluffy, light ending that just makes my heart swell up in glee. I really like that Dimitri's character had a huge change of heart. That was very sweet. I recommend this to anybody who loves unexpected love stories.

No one but madcap stand-up comedian Eddie Izzard can spin comic gold out of papal history, monkeys with guns, Jesus preaching to the dinosaurs, and cafeteria food on the Death Star. Circle, taken from his stand-up tour in 2000, doesn't have the astonishingly seamless free-associative flow of Glorious or Dress to Kill, his previous specials--which is to say, he's only intermittently brilliant, instead of supernaturally nonstop brilliant. We'll take what we can get, because Izzard can slip in surprisingly stinging commentary about international politics and religion, yet his impish smile suggests that he's only pointing out the obvious. He tosses out an idea and then plays with it like a cat plays with a mouse, flipping it around, teasing it out, pouncing, and then letting it go, only to sneak back up on it just when you'd forgetten it was there. Cheeky, subversive, and very, very funny. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Not up to Izzard standards.......2007-06-12

We are huge Eddie Izzard fans, have all his cd's and dvd's of concerts, have seen him live twice, love The Riches, but..... This dvd concert is not up to his usual genius. It is funny in parts but he seems disinterested, distracted and almost annoyed with the show. So was I.

5 out of 5 stars Izzard Rocks.......2007-04-21

Eddie Izzard has to be just about the best comic around. My upper division English teacher in college showed us some of "Dress to Kill," and the class was cracking up. I watch everything of his I can get my hands on.

5 out of 5 stars izzard is the wizzard! .......2007-03-27

Eddie Izzard is the best comedian of this age, no doubt.
Is he smart? Yeah! Does he make you laugh for hours? Yeah!

The point is his intellectual capacity and quality makes his show even more interesting. Comedians are observes I belive, they observe things. Think of one and only Jerry Seinfeld. He is funny, he has lots of things to say about anything. So does Eddie. But Eddie loves to talk about politics, history, war, humanity etc. He sure observes moreover he reads, he writes, he questions, he searhes. Well, it's not a piece of cake make jokes about latin empire! This is what I like most about him. He is cultivated. You may get a quick survey to history and politcs; little details about daily life in Eddie style of comments and gestures.

The show "Circle" has cultivated smart funny stories.
You can come across with James Mason, Sean Connery, Jesus, The English and of course Hitler.
He sure gives more than you want....with a fantastic make up! :)

5 out of 5 stars Eddie Izzard - Circle.......2007-01-15

Hilarious. Eddie Izzard is a very clever, intelligent comedian. Not a lot of cursing.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice, but not quite up to the standards he set for himself..........2006-11-03

Eddie Izzard is my favorite comedian by far and just about everything out of the mans mouth gets at least a chuckle from me. Though if you are new to Izzard I reccomend buying any of his other DvD's first, as this dosn't quite live up to his other preformances (Though I have not seen Unrepetable or Sexie yet so I can't say anything about them). That said, if you own all the other Eddie DvD's or simply must hear the Star Wars bit this is still a very fine performance that got quite a few laughs out of me.

You wouldn't know it by watching the mostly ridiculous escapades on display in Wild America, but this comedy/adventure for young boys is marginally based on the true story of Marshall, Mark, and Marty Stouffer, three young brothers who successfully pursued their dream of becoming wildlife filmmakers. From their home in the South, the Stouffer boys embark on a cross-country trek to the West, where they hope to get rare footage from inside the dreaded Cave of the Sleeping Bears. Along the way they encounter cute British tourist girls, deadly alligators, a rampaging moose, and an Air Force fighter on a bombing range. In other words, Wild America is about as contrived as it could possibly be and still claim to be based on reality, but it is harmless enough for young viewers with its wholesome message about bravery, hard work, and family togetherness. Jonathan Taylor Thomas (from television's Home Improvement) leads the young cast of adventurers. --Jeff Shannon

Kids love this movie. As an adult I can nit-pick all I want, but the simple truth, is that kids love this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great adventure.......2007-05-07

I found this movie to be thoroughly entertaining. I loved the spirit of life and nature shared by the experience of the 3 brothers. It was also refreshing to see their hopes and dreams come to life. Well acted and a well told story. Loved the relationship of the parents and children - the support and nurturing by all was very positive. Then you find it is based on a true story and that makes the tale even better. Great movie to watch with your family and friends.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise.......2007-04-03

My husband and I were trying to keep from dozing off on the couch one Sunday afternoon when we came upon this movie. It wasn't what the local station had promised they would show, but within minutes we were hooked. It quickly became clear that you have to keep your tongue in cheek while watching this. The main character is being fanciful as he tells the story through reminicing. Don't let that bother you. It is a dear, warmly-told story. I plan to get it so I can sit down and see it again.

5 out of 5 stars Wild.......2007-03-21

This is the best movie to watch with a teenager to bring your family together. Laugh, cry & laugh some more! Get it!

5 out of 5 stars Wild America.......2007-03-20

I thought Wild America was the best movie ever!! It was funny and interesting. The movie was really, really cool because it was based on a true story. Every time when it got scarey something funny would come in, like when they were in the cave singing to put the bears back to sleep and at the end of the song they did what their Dad did (farted)!! This is my absolute FAVORITE MOVIE EVER!!!!!!

If you are purchasing this movie to see Keira Knightly's breasts, make sure you don't blink as you will miss them.
Otherwise the movie is good

2 out of 5 stars Impressed but not..........2007-05-13

I bought this DVD because of Kiera Knightly, I won't deny it. That said I was not expecting much. It still disappointed me.

This film had some good story ideas, but it didn't deliver on any of them. The thriller aspect of it was less than thrilling and I found it to be anticlimatic.

If you are a Kiera fan I guess its worth having for the collection or renting it. If not there is no point to buying or renting this DVD.

2 out of 5 stars Possibly The Worst Film Blunder Ever.......2007-01-03

Warning: Spoilers Abound.

Okay folks, I was flipping channels and came across a movie called The Hole, starring Thora Birch, Keira Knightley and Desmond Harrington. Now, aside from this terrible blunder I'm going to tell you about in just a few more sentences, the film was fairly entertaining. I dig Thora Birch, and her character was really well-played. What really shocked me though, was my quick research after the film was over. I mean, I checked IMdB, Rotten Tomatoes and Wikipedia. Although all reputable sources, none mentioned this ridiculous mistake.

Have you ever been so utterly sure of something so blantantly, painstakingly obvious that it would literally take an entirely different, alien planet to be able to even minutely comprehend the vast insipidness of its vacuous residents? That's how I felt after watching this movie and realizing that apparently I'm the only goddamn human being on this prosaic, infantile planet who immediately saw the dimwitted aberration for what it was!

And what exactly was this stupendous error, you ask? Well... It's very simple. I mean, it couldn't get more common sensically moronic than this. The basic plot of the film is four teenagers trapped in an old war bunker. The movie begins with Thora Birch's rendition of what happened: that her friend set this whole thing up, locked them in the 'hole' and didn't come back when he was supposed to. She escapes and the three others die. The story changes from what she originally told her psychiatrist to what actually happened. Turns out the only way out was actually locked from the inside and Thora had the key the whole time. The other teenagers die for various reasons, irrelevant to the blunder at hand, and she ends up telling the tale to her psychiatrist from inside the bunker. In the end, she kills the guy who set it up and plants the key on him. The police come and find Thora and her psychiatrist in the 'hole' and after rebuking the psychiatrist, mention that the case is now closed. At that moment, a flashback shows Thora murdering her friend that set everything up and planting the key on him. Right after that moment, I said to myself: "What the heck? The door locks from the inside?! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that either a) the door was never locked, or b) someone had to unlock it from the inside!" Alright, those weren't my exact words, but good god, it's so obvious!

And that, my friends, has got to be possibly the worst film blunder ever.

3 out of 5 stars Better Than You'd Expect.......2006-12-23

Surprisingly good movie -- Laurence Fox as always, is hot, and the cast is very strong, even Kiera Knightly, who manages to pull off a good performance with a minimum of her trademark grimacing. The story is engrossing, and keeps you in gritty suspense all the way through.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2006-09-28

I really enjoyed this movie and have told most of my friends about it and they liked it was well. I thought the acting was wonderful - you can feel the tension build as the whole situation disintegrates into chaos. Awesome ending as well :-)

Stomping out their usual cuteness and carbon copying Disney's grand animation style to a T, directors Don Bluth and Gary Goldman (An American Tail) create a successful musical comedy from the story of the lost Russian princess. Adapting the story of imperialism and revolution is tricky, and subsequently the film's opening is weak. Once Anya (voiced by Meg Ryan, sung by Liz Callaway) is a teenager and on her own (suffering from some degree of amnesia), the film is quite pleasing though never refreshingly new.

Twentieth Century Fox's big-money gamble to horn in on Disney's realm is worthy. The songs, especially the recurrent "Once Upon a December," by Broadway team Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty are better than Disney's recent efforts. It's worth picking up the soundtrack. The mix of cell animation and computer work is vivid. The collection of vocal talent is also strong, from John Cusack (as Dimitri, who wants to earn the reward by bringing Anya to Paris) to Hank Azaria as an amusing albino bat. Kelsey Grammer helps turn a roly-poly sidekick into a warm and strong supporting character.

The biggest drawback is Bluth/Goldman's insistence on having a typical villain. Surprisingly, the story would be strong enough without one, and the undead corpse of Rasputin (Christopher Lloyd) is unneeded and unoriginal. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!.......2007-06-14

I love watching this movie over and over! My favorite character is Bartok the little white bat! So cute in his attitude about the whole situation with the characters! A must have for any family!

5 out of 5 stars Have you heard.......2007-01-17

I first saw parts of this movie when I was young about 12 years old at a Day care center called Kids Castle in Houston Texas. This year I final got to see the whole movie from being to end. I rememmeber loving the character Bartok when I was a kid but being scared to death by Rasputin. This movie was a phonimal hit when it came out making over 40 million in the US and over 80 million dollars world wide. A word of warning even though this movie for reason I don't understand got a G rating it has several parts with scary lord of rings like Demonic images in specifally bat like green demons flyinng about destrotying trains and other vehicles. The movie starts in Russia in 1917. The whole royal family except the princess Anstasia and here Grandmother are wiped out by the vile Rasputin and his demon minions. Ten years later will the now tennage Anstasia find here family and regain her memories. Or will the vile dispecible Rasputin final have his revenge against the royal family. For those of you who were fond of the character Bartok this movie is not his final deput two years after this Bartok appeared in his own movie Bartok the Magnificent. For those of you that like this I also recommend the Swan Princess Triology.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful animated feature allegedly based on the true story.......2006-09-25

Plot in a nutshell - at the beginning of the 20th century, Russia is thrown into chaos when Czar Nicholas and most of his family is killed thanks to a curse by the evil "sorcerer" Rasputin (voice of Christopher Lloyd), but one daughter, Anastasia (voiced by Kirsten Dunst as a child), manages to survive, for better or worse, but with amnesia. Years later, the adult Anastasia (voiced by Meg Ryan, once of one of Hollywood's most sought after actresses, her career now in a state of severe disrepair thanks to her much over publicized fling with Russell Crowe), known only as Anya, is released from a Russian orphanage with no memory of her past, her only clue being a necklace with an intimate message written on it that indicates Paris as a place of importance. In trying to get to Paris, she falls in with two charmingly lovable scoundrels, Dmitri (voice of John Cusack) and Vlad (Kelsey Grammar); the two con-men intend to present an "Anastasia" lookalike to the Duchess (voice of Angela Lansbury), the last surviving member of the Royal Family, who is holding meetings with girls claiming to be Anastasia in hopes of finding the real one so that they can get the reward money she's offering. Initially unaware that Anya is the real Anastasia but merely assuming that she is an uncanny lookalike, Dmitri & Vlad decide to clean Anya up and present her to the Duchess. Along the way, long buried secrets are revealed and unexpected feelings arise as the nearly dead Rasputin and his bat sidekick Bartok try to destroy the trio.

Beautifully animated feature courtesy of Don Bluth, you'd almost swear this was one of the great Disney features. Strong animation is complimented by competent voice acting by the big stars, notably Meg Ryan throwing out her perkiest voice possible. Historically inaccurate, but who cares?

5 out of 5 stars I watched it as a little kid and remember..........2006-09-19

I remember when i was 3 my dad brought home this movie and the minute i watched it i fell in love with it. Now I'm twelve and found the movie, and i fell in love with it again. The story line is amuzing and i love it to this day. I like the music too. If you really listen to The Beginning, it will make you cry, at least it made me cry. If you don't buy the movie, buy the music...OR BOTH!

5 out of 5 stars What a Fabulous Movie!.......2006-08-11

The music is very entertaining and the story really catches your attention. The plot is well put together along with the thrilling and suspenseful scenes of action/adventure. Anastasia (though she doesn't know who she is) is on a quest to find the truth about her past, and bumps into a few guys conning to get a girl to pretend she's the long lost Anastasia and receive their reward, if the girl fits the part. Together, they all go on the journey expecting to find what they're looking for, but on the way there, they face many challenging obstacles, growing closer together all the time. Even a little romance between the travelers comes in that threatens both their lives and having them never actually getting what they traveled the long way for. This movie is totally worth it!!!!

Jude Law's Alfie, much like Michael Caine's Alfie in the 1966 original, is what you'd call an unrepentant womanizer. He beds 'em but never weds 'em, and New York provides ample opportunity to continue the process--until reality slaps him in the face. Because Jude Law is, well, Jude Law, you can see why he gets away with it as long as he does, and the actor also pulls off the usually awkward trick of narrating directly to the camera. Neither his Alfie, however, nor director Charles Shyer's remake emerges completely without scratches. Law has a Chesire Cat carnality, but he emanates too much intellect to buy him as the relatively dim bulb he's supposed to be. The film, meanwhile, is a bit soft around the edges; the whole thing would have more resonance if it wasn't quite so intent on watching the unrepentant repent. Regardless, it's a surprisingly thoughtful diversion, and there's fine work from Marisa Tomei, Nia Long, and Susan Sarandon as the women who understandably make Alfie reconsider his ways.--Steve Wiecking

Description

In this remake of the 1966 classic, Jude Law stars as Alfie, the quintessential Don Juan who is rather caught up in himself. Using his charm and a great smile, Alfie searches for beautiful women who will give him what he wants. Once they become too attached, he breaks their heart. This ideal bachelor lifestyle ends up unraveling and Alfie must learn to admit defeat and change his ways.
