This biographical account of the tempestuous, taboo-shattering love affair between two 19th century French poets--Paul Verlaine (David Thewlis) and Arthur Rimbaud (Leonardo DiCaprio)--didn't do much at the box office when it was released in 1995. But after the success of Titanic, it became somewhat infamous when Playgirl magazine announced its intention to publish nude pictures of DiCaprio taken from the film. (Nobody much seemed to care that Thewlis, who also starred in Mike Leigh's Naked, also appears nude in Total Eclipse.) The truth is, the nudity in question only lasts for a few frames, but it's certainly in character for the young wild-man Rimbaud.

Directed by Agnieszka Holland (Europa, Europa, The Secret Garden), Total Eclipse begins in 1870 when the newly married Verlaine is 24 and Rimbaud is 17. The volatile combination of their reckless passions, idiosyncratic talents, and obnoxious egos is a recipe for disaster--and l'amour fou--culminating in a two-year prison term for Verlaine who was convicted of sodomy. DiCaprio's work in this film (as well as This Boy's Life, What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, and The Basketball Diaries) proves he is a serious actor who's interested in risky, challenging work--not just the matinee idol he became in the wake of Titanic. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!.......2007-05-28

When I saw this movie, like many of the movies I've reviewed so far, it was by sheer accident.

I was left stunned at the end.

As the movie unfolds, it becomes ever more so intense and gripping, as both a love story and a tragedy at the same time. The ending is truly gripping.

Leo, as usual, is phenomenal, and this was pre-Titanic.

5 out of 5 stars pleased.......2007-05-07

I was very happy when I recieved my CD........ It came very fast and it was in great condition.... very pleased. will order again

5 out of 5 stars Total Eclipse.......2007-02-26

One of the best works by DiCaprio and of course Thewlis who seems to get less attention for some reason. Inspired me to read more about Rimbaud and Verlaine. I don't know how anybody who watched this movie along with What's eating Gilbert Grape can still call him just a pretty face.

5 out of 5 stars BEST OF DI CAPRIO.......2006-12-10

I love Leo and this is the best he ever did. After this splendid movie he decided to go mainstream, away from independent films but this was his apex. It's hard to believe he did this in the era of his "This Boy's Life" for it's the opposite characterization. I have watched this film many times and I enjoy it more each time--his acting while still in his teens is incredibly apt for this strange, eccentric, nihilistic and anti-establishment poet.

3 out of 5 stars Eh........2006-12-09

This movie wasn't great, wasn't bad, it was barely good.
Knowing a little about the poet Arthur Rimbaud I wanted an insight into his life. The way he was portrayed was less than wonderful.
Leonardo played him as a whiny, selfish immature little boy. Little of his genius was shown. I realize that Arthur was young but he also had a mind mature enough to create such wonderful work. To me this movie should have been about his work first, it wasn't, his gay lovelife was.
While that is a big part of who he was I could have done with less of their relationship and more of the work of both he and Paul Verlaine.
Paul Verlaine came across as a complete nut case. I honestly couldn't see what either found so attractive about the other. And since this was made to be more of a love story you'd think that they would have worked a little harder on the chemistry.
This movie wasn't bad enough to turn off, but not good enough to buy or watch again.
I was hoping for a little more depth.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent fights........2007-01-06

WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS

Japan's Pride FC has some of the most talented fighters in mixed martial arts today, and this event is a fine example. These in particular are all heavyweight fights, and the tournament is a sort of elimination system, in which the winners of every fight advance to the next tournament. Fights are one 10 minute round, followed by two 5-minute rounds, which I especially like, having gotten into mixed martial arts by way of the UFC. I've always felt that 3 5-minute rounds just isn't enough time. Here, the fights have plenty of room to unfold, and only one even goes into the second round.

So, as I mentioned, we have here the cream of the martial arts crop. Chief among them is the incredible Fedor Emelianenko, considered by many to be the best fighter out there today. Watching his very impressive submission victory (in 2 minutes) over the legendary Mark Coleman, it's certainly not hard to believe. There are tons of other great fights here as well, such as Sergei Kharitonov pummeling Murilo Rua, wrestler Kevin Randleman scoring a surprise knockout over lethal kickboxer Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, and Antonio Rodrigo Noguera's epic battle against Hirotaka Yokoi.

A couple of fights here are kind of more novelty than anything, like the 7-foot Giant Silva taking on the short, squat Henry Miller, and the "giant vs. giant" matchup between Semmy Schilt and Gan McGee, but they're still fun to watch. Not a single boring fight on here. Also, Bas Rutten's commentary and interviews are really entertaining, and UFC champ Chuck Liddell even stops by for a little commentary toward the end.

All in all, a great buy for Pride fans, and mixed martial arts fans in general.

1 out of 5 stars PRIDE is the best . . . BUT . . . .......2006-12-28

A lot of the matchups on this DVD/Event are one sided. That's really what it comes down to in the end, Critical Countdown & Final Conflict (barring FC's ending) get much better.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best pride dvds.......2006-06-15

This is a great dvd. Pride has the best heavyweights in the world and this dvd shows why. There are a few lack luster fights but all in all a great dvd.

5 out of 5 stars Ok, so another five star after all..........2006-02-14

I had given Shockwave 2004 a five star rating before, wrongly stating that it was the only five star Pride event that I have ever seen. This event is another top notch performance in every way. Every fight on this card is exciting as hell. If you are a fan of MMA and really want to own the most exciting that Pride has to offer, then I highly recommend this DVD along with Shockwave 2004. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Total Non-Stop Action (MMA style).......2006-01-28

Totally the best tournament to date; definately surpassing the expectations of the middleweight tournament of 2005, and has some of the greatest heavyweights of all time squaring off to see who will be The 2004 Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion. Coleman, Fedor, Randleman, Cro-Cop, and none other than the Texas Crazy Horse Heath Herring all make this one to remember. This tournament continues in Critical Countdown 2004, and what a countdown it is.
