A surprise sleeper hit when released in 1992, this romantic fantasy works as a comedic adventure and a gentle tearjerker thanks to Mel Gibson's appealing performance. He plays Daniel, a daring test pilot who is deeply distraught by the apparent death of his girlfriend, Helen, in 1939. Feeling little reason to live, he volunteers for a pioneering cryogenics experiment and is thawed out 50 years later by two young boys. They bring the confused pilot home to Nat's single mom, Claire (Jamie Lee Curtis). There's a hint of romance, but Daniel desperately needs to know if Helen really died in 1939, and he discovers that love has a way of surviving a half-century leap in time. The premise is hokey and certain plot details are conveniently ignored, but Gibson, Curtis, and Elijah Wood (as Nat) hold it together with irresistible charm and just the right balance of fantasy and drama. --Jeff Shannon

Unless this turns out to have been a made for TV movie, I will wait until
it comes out in widescreen format before I buy it. I project my movies on
a 10 foot wide screen and I like to see the WHOLE picture in its original
format thank you very much. ( 4 stars for the movie, not the format ).

4 out of 5 stars Forever Young.......2007-03-11

Wonderful movie for young and old alike. Just enough flying to satisfy the airplane "nut" in your family, and a great love story to keep the ladies interested. You might want to keep the box of tissues handy just in case...!

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it is on widescreen.......2006-09-01

The widescreen version of Forever Young was released on LASER DISC. And it is awesome! I have it in my collection. Someone in their infinite wisdom probably decided it wasn't worth it to put that version on DVD. They were so wrong.

5 out of 5 stars love this movie!.......2006-02-23

I love this movie! The classic romance, the modern-day dilemmas, great quotes like "It's the dead guy!!" And, of course, all the flying scenes! Mel Gibson, Jamie Lee Curtis and Elijah Wood are favorites of our family and did not disappoint in this wonderful film.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Film.......2006-01-12

C'mon! Admit it! You love sappy love stories. Especially with a sci-fi twist. Yes, this is cute and harmless, and a real tear jerker. But you know you are gonna love it even more when you see it done by Mel Gibson. Jamie Lee Curtis and Elija Wood also do a great job. The main thing here is that the characters make the story believeable and enjoyable.

Description

Live Forever is a film about a period in the Nineties when anything seemed possible. Britain was of a time, of a people, of a place, which captured the world's imagination. A bright new culture deserved a bright new government. And it seemed, for a little while at least, that Britain had one. Live Forever is a story that builds to that moment in the Nineties when the politicians recognized the emergence of a vibrant British popular culture and seized it, guerrilla-fashion, to re-brand the country. In the mid-Nineties Britain was swinging again and Oasis' debut album Definitely Maybe captured the mood of the times; a swaggering and epic celebration of the joys of living purely for the moment. Along with Pulp and Blur, Oasis had kick-started an upsurge in home-grown musical talent. It heralded a new music scene, which became known as Britpop. But it wasn't just the music. British galleries, catwalks and records were the envy of the rest of the world. British culture rocked and cool Britannia had arrived.

5 out of 5 stars Tongue-in-cheek documentary slams the Gallagher brothers and their whole pretence........2006-12-29

This is a great documentary, very sly, subtle and informative. Made up of interviews with prominent bandmembers from the Britpop scene it documents the rise and fall of the Britpop phenomenon. It also shows, via interviews with Damon Albarn, how a fairly good band - Blur - can be brought low by its own hubris and by a popular perception that the band was 'not authentic enough'. It also shows, via interviews with Noel and Liam Gallagher, how another fairly good band - the Beatles tribute band Oasis - can be so over-hyped that the bandmembers end up in Cloud-Cookooland thinking they're geniuses and working class heroes when in reality they've become multi-millionaires of musical mediocrity living in mansions, with about as much in common with the working class as Bertie Wooster has with Jeeves. Also covered is the manipulation of Britpop and Oasis by New Labour. The whole thing is tied together using interviews with Louise Wener (the lead singer of Sleeper) who gives her perceptive thoughts on the Britpop phenomenon.

It seems that many here think this documentary is a homage to Oasis. I saw it very differently. When we see Gallagher in his mansion talking about himself being authentic working class it should become clear to everyone that the documentary is poking subtle fun at him and criticising the whole contrived Oasis vs. Blur 'battle of the bands' working class vs. upper crust thing. I mean get a clue folks! The whole thing is hilarious - the Gallagher brothers must be high as a kite if they think their current situation makes them the salt of the Earth to anyone but those whose brain capacity is on a par with Blackadder's Baldrick or Monty Python's Mr. Gumby. At least Damon Albarn realises he was played for a patsy - I don't think the Gallaghers really know, but then again why would they care? After all, they made out on the deal.

By the way, the Oasis tribute band Wonderwall had me in stitches - I mean a clueless tribute band paying tribute to a clueless tribute band. It's classic!

An awesome documentary with a lot to say about how the Gallaghers betrayed their roots while still thinking they never left them. Honestly Gallaghers, get a clue - when you get mansions and Rolls-Royces you have to give up your claim to the working class mantle. You're nouveau riche - deal with it.

4 out of 5 stars I thought this was a decent perspective and EXTREMELY entertaining.......2006-01-11

If you enjoy the music of Oasis, Blur, Pulp, the Verve, this DVD will be entertaining. Granted some of its theories revolving the BritPop movement seem overextended, it still provides a bit of entertainment. You might not agree with some of the theories, but its still worth a listen. Anyway, the DVD devotes a most of its time to the 3 biggest bands at the time : Oasis, Blur, and Pulp. (Well, I guess the Verve should also be included, but I doubt the reclusive Richard Ashcroft was willing to give an interview). The DVD is worth a go just for the great MUSIC, the hilarious (and on-the-spot) GALLAGHER Bros. interviews, and Jarvis' insight. BTW, Damon Albarn comes off as a real tool.
Its also interesting that they interviewed two delusional members of an Oasis tribute band. I'm still baffled by that one.

5 out of 5 stars I agree with the first reviewer..........2005-12-14

Noel and Liam and Jarvis are f*&king hilarious...Damon needs to off himself...same with the weirdo journalist with the upper-class accent...this video is good at making Britpop seem like an actual period in music...hahahahaha...whatever...besides, everyone knows Radiohead and Prodigy were quite accepted in the U.S. and were very original...Oasis is an awesome, lethal rock n roll band, anyone who loves rock n roll have to love Oasis...don't cheat yourself...

4 out of 5 stars wot brit pop/rock is all about.......2005-11-05

it does capture the essence of the era...that being the 80s-90s of the brit pop/rock era. its a cliffnote version of the times with the well noted stars of the brit music business, noel and liam gallagher(luv ya blokes) as usual are dead on and funny as hell, damon of blur, the guy from pulp(too ugly to remember his name) and many more. i gave it 4 stars because it was an in depth look at the rise and fall of "swinging london and reigning brit rock" interesting, but i must say i took away that 5th star because they booed at all the american music...giving the impression that all of british rock was superior, when all of it is not...i've heard alot of brit music and i must admit alot of it is good and alot of it is rubbish as well. overall my 4 stars recommend this film to music lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Maybe it will live forever ..........2005-08-31

I was in college when the Brit Pop phenomena hit. But I was a snob back then, deeply involved in my college radio station and turning my nose up at this tripe. Oh that was just too mainstream and commercial for ME to like! Of course I've since matured, and I gave Brit Pop a chance since then, and this documentary taught me a few things I otherwise didn't know.

There is a curious phenomena that takes place between America and the UK in terms of pop culture. One gentleman made a comment about a pendulum swing back and forth between the two, and that is certainly true now that I think about it. I had heard of The Stone Roses, but they never caught on with avengence here. Then, of course, Nirvana happened and eclipsed everything else. After Kurt died in 94, Oasis began to rise and the UK's "grunge years" began. I heard stories about all the kids in the UK chasing after Oasis and their packed, sold out shows, and a new chapter began.

This documentary concentrates mostly on the Gallagher brothers. Noel is far more well spoken than Liam (but everyone knows that because I don't think he's spent nearly as much time pickling himself), everything Noel said seemed to have more meaning behind it. They interviewed a few more people, such as Damien from Blur and the guy from Pulp. Damien seems like a real downer, they should've given the guy from Pulp more of a say as he seemed a little more animated than Blur. I liked the Beatles vs. Rolling Stones - type rivalry established against Blur and Oasis (seeing whose album would hit #1 first), but you can tell that they really weren't interested and it was a creation by the press. Plus, you got the impression that London was swinging again like the mods in the 60s.

It is a little ironic that they too fell into the same traps that we did in America with the death of grunge. Heroin too had them in their grasp (referencing Blur's song "BeetleBum", as it was supposed to be about heroin). And, a celebrity death ended their trip as well (ours was Kurt's, theirs was Princess Diana).

Here it is 10 years later. Blur and Pulp seem to have gone the way of the dodo, but Oasis is still around. They're not the hot phenomena they were, but they continue to make music and seem to have staying power (when they're not fighting or drunk/high). Now Coldplay seems to be the one leading the Brit Pop charge. Maybe they will, in fact, live forever.

3 out of 5 stars Puff up the volume !.......2006-07-07

Step aside Powerpuff Girls, 'cause Cartoon Network's got a new "kawaii overdose": "Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi" !!!

This is number two of the TV series DVD collection. It's got even more episodes starring an anime-esque version of the awesome J-pop twosome and their friends. They include:
"Team Teen" - The singers become superheroes.
"Rock and Roe" - The girls go through a wild dream world after eating bad sushi.
"Scowlitis" - Yumi wears a strange smile-inducing device.
"The Oddyguard" - Manager Kaz hires an overprotective bodyguard.
"Song Sung Bad" - Kaz plays a rather horrible solo performance.
"In the Cards" - The two battle over a cute guy through trading cards.
"Koi Fish" - The girls get some weird information from a talking koi fish.
"Ami Ami" - Yumi thinks she's Ami !

Bonus features include a Puffy music video - karaoke style ! Also, there's "How to speak Japanese with Puffy". Now that's very helpful; especially if you're rather "lost in translation".

So get ready to say "HI HI" (or "konnishiwa", if you prefer) to the latest rockin' pair this side of the far East !

5 out of 5 stars Fun and loveable show.......2006-03-20

How could anybody not like this show? It's so cute and fun it makes me feel like a little kid inside and I'm 19 years old! haha, I seriously wished they had this show when I was 8 years old.

The animation is very nice thanks to the great artists, the storylines range anywhere from the girls being super heros to them being on tour and making pit stops into awkward situations, etc etc.

Overall this is one of the most original cartoons on television. Compare it to everything else on tv, there's nothing like this. And that's why I like it so much!

My only complaint is that there weren't any good extras. There were a few but they were too short...

Just beware that some retailers may jack the price up on the DVDs so be sure to shop and get your moneys worth. There aren't too many episodes on the DVD so don't buy it if someone sells it for $20. I got mine for only $10.99, you just need to look around before you buy.

If you have their cds, the DVDS makes a great edition to any Puffy AmiYumi fans.

4 out of 5 stars Reviewing Puffy Ami Yumi.......2006-01-07

HiHi Puffy AmiYumi is a decent animated show. It has the fun attitude that most animated shows lack. The Puffy AmiYumi show is an animation that is based upon two Japanese Rock Stars known as Ami and Yumi along with their manager Kaz. They tour around the world in their tour bus, having different adventures in each episode. The rock band also bases the animation around their J-Rock style music which is known as Japanese Rock'N'Roll, Their music is very catchy and can also be enjoyable to listen too, the animation used in the show, places Ami and Yumi off as two cute best friends. They also use their friendship to help each other to acomplish various goals in each episode, which shows how strong a friendship can be. Thats the basic story of the animation.

This animation has a funny and carefree aspect meaning that any age group would be able to sit down and enjoy it. The show can also contain rude and spiteful comments which are harmless. Others say that the characters are rude, nieve and disrespectful. But you'll find that in 70% of animated shows that are shown at this present day a.k.a (Simpsons, Megas XLR etc)

This is my review on the HiHi Puffy AmiYumi Show, i hope it helped you. Thanks for reading!

5 out of 5 stars Lighten up and have fun!!!.......2005-12-21

This show is adventerous and fun, it's new and fresh. And first and foremost it's a cartoon show for cryin' out loud. The previous reviews are harsh and insultful. I find this show very funny and I, for one, adore their music. The above reviewers sound as if they are the same ones that would like cartoons like Tom & Jerry removed form the air for being 'too violent'. Hey everyone, it's great that opinions can be shared and expressed, and my opinion is this show rocks! I also love the girls' 'indie rock' sound. This show is a keeper, right up there with the likes of Billy & Mandy and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

1 out of 5 stars Comments To Jessie "304".......2005-12-14

FINALLY! I'm not the only one here against this absolutely dreadful TV series. It shows only how much of jerks people can be. I mean, Taz never changes being the rude and greedy idiot while the two "stars" either need to insult someone, hurt someone, or play crap that they call music.

Description

A brief career. A timeless stardom. In just three major movie roles, James Dean became an icon for the ages. Now his legacy shines even brighter thanks to this fascinating film that, filled with an astonishing treasure trove of newfound or rare glimpses of Dean's TV performances, is like a road map to his meteoric success. Michael J. Sheridan directs and Martin Sheen narrates this revealing documentary showcased at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. Movie clips, romances, photos that are part of our national DNA (and the stories behind them) and the small-screen work that paved the way to the big screen are all part of the James Dean you couldn't see until now. Forever young. Endlessly fascinating.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great Clips, But...........2006-08-19

JAMES DEAN -- FOREVER YOUNG is essential viewing for anyone interested in the actor; the writer/director's done a wonderful job of assembling hard-to-find film clips, particularly from Dean's early days in live tv. The screen tests with Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman are fascinating, too. (On the strength of this scene, she'd have made an interesting Abra.) My major problem with this overview? No mention of Dean's bisexuality. True, the production team needed cooperation from the Dean estate, and many of his fans probably don't want to think closely about that side of his life. But Dean's proclivities have been extensively documented in print by now, and Liz Sheridan and Pier Angeli definitely weren't the entire story. Given that much of Dean's appeal (like that of his contemporaries Brando and Clift) tempers traditional notions of American masculinity with a feminine side, seems a terrible pity to continue mythologizing a complete heterosexuality that apparently never existed.

5 out of 5 stars A must buy for James Dean fans..........2006-02-11

James Dean - Forever Young is a fascinating documentary into the life of James Dean, a lot of thought & effort has obviously gone into the production of this short (around an hour in length) documentary.

My advice? Ignore any negative remarks about Forever Young from people who haven't even seen a Jimmy Dean film before (why would anyone watch a documentary on his life if they have never seen one of his films before!?)

In short, all James Dean fans need to pick both "James Dean - Forever Young" and "James Dean - Sense Memories" as they're both a fascinating watch and a wonderful compliment to the new special edition releases of "Rebel without a Cause" and "East of Eden".

3 out of 5 stars Does Dean a disservice.......2005-12-11

At the beginning of a special screening of JAMES DEAN: FOREVER YOUNG, two of its film editors opened with introductory remarks, among which was that the production had been a "labor of love". At the end of the showing, the question fleetingly crossed my mind: With friends like this, who needs enemies?

This documentary is a sterile visual record of Dean's brief acting career, which spanned the period 1949 to his death in 1955. The film includes brief snips from roughly two-thirds of his 38 television roles, as well as slightly longer segments from his few feature films. There are also matter-of-fact asides about his brief, first marriage to a dancer, his romantic pairing with actress Pier Angeli, and his love of Porsche cars and auto racing, the last interest indirectly leading to his death on a public highway as he drove his sports car to an event in which he was to compete.

I was only six years of age at the time of Dean's death. Obviously, I wasn't old enough to have become a fan. Subsequently, I've never seen any of his big three feature films (GIANT, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, and EAST OF EDEN) even though "Jimmy Dean" is an American household staple. (Whoops, sorry! That's breakfast sausage.) What makes this documentary such a disservice to its subject is that it's neither compelling enough to prod me to watch any of those films nor read-up on the man's life and career. My 3-star award will cause worshippers of the James Dean Icon to howl with indignation. That's OK; I understand, and forgive all the negative votes this review will attract.

If I was alive fifty years from now, even I could extract segments from three feature films by, say, Johnny Depp (e.g. CHOCOLAT, THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, and THE LIBERTINE), and string them together in a short documentary with commentary in such a manner as to make contemporary audiences beg to see the entirety of each movie and read a bio of Depp's life. The fact that the creators of JAMES DEAN: FOREVER YOUNG didn't do that, at least for me, indicates that 1) they tried too hard and lost their way, or 2) there wasn't sufficient starting material to begin with. Either way, it's a lost opportunity to achieve something greater. As it is, this 50s "rebel" comes across as surprisingly mundane.

5 out of 5 stars VERY, VERY GOOD!.......2005-11-29

This is a very good documentary about James Dean. He goes through his entire acting career from beginning to end. One particular scene, he showed some of his rebel-NESS. He had spoke when the script did NOT have any speaking parts for him.

Just like Al Pacino, James Dean made every role he played convincing and exciting to look at. He was an outstanding actor and I wonder what would he be like if he was still alive today. I wonder what it would be like if they casted James Dean and Al Pacino in the same movie, opposite to each other like they did with Heat (Al Pacino / Robert De Niro).

Besides being an outstanding actor, he was a COOL dude. I mean, everything about the guy was cool. From the way he talked, walked, smoked his cigarette, wore his clothes, EVERYTHING was just COOL. I don't believe there has been another actor or person as cool as James Dean was. That's what I admire about him most, his COOLNESS and him being a rebel. I, myself, can relate to his style because I consider myself as somewhat of a rebel. I lost my father at the age 7 years old and my mother wasn't really around for me and I have been rebellious against everything and everybody.

My three favorite actors of all time are:
James Dean
Al Pacino
Denzel Washington

If you haven't seen this, SEE IT and I'm sure you'll like it, especially if you're a James Dean fan.

5 out of 5 stars For all Deaners.......2005-11-09

A sleeper hit when released in 1992, this romantic fantasy works as a comedic adventure and a gentle tearjerker thanks to Mel Gibson's appealing performance.

Wonderful movie for young and old alike. Just enough flying to satisfy the airplane "nut" in your family, and a great love story to keep the ladies interested. You might want to keep the box of tissues handy just in case...!
