Comprehensive but user-friendly, reasonably challenging but accessible to a variety of levels, Yoga Shakti is inarguably one of the best yoga products on the market--no small achievement when one considers just how many of them there are. Instructor-creator Shiva Rea, a California-based yogi of considerable international renown, specializes in vinyasa yoga (a vinyasa is essentially a series of flowing, connected poses, incorporating breath and movement and cultivating heat, strength, flexibility, and balance). Four complete practices are presented, ranging in length from 42 to 85 minutes and including Basic Flow (for beginners), two more vigorous Solar Flow sequences, and a Lunar Flow sequence falling somewhere in the middle in terms of degree of difficulty; familiar poses like sun salutations, forward bends, lunges, twists, and inversions are featured, although Rea adds many of her own touches (such as the four "dancing warrior" sections, sun salutation variations designed for intermediate users and focusing on hips, backbends, and so on), and there are also sections devoted to pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation. It's all good, but the principal innovation of Yoga Shakti is the "yoga matrix," which allows users to customize and program their own workouts, drawing on portions of any or all of the four sequences to create series of various lengths and levels of intricacy (some guidelines are suggested for the less experienced) and thus keep their practices fresh and evolving. One can also do the various workouts with or without the instruction audio track on (the Indian-New Age-flavored music is quite good, and usually unobtrusive), and there's even an entire second disc, containing interviews, additional instruction, travel footage (filming took place primarily in India and the Maldive Islands), and more. All in all, Yoga Shakti is most impressive. --Sam Graham

This is the breast! Best yoga DVD ever! You're always able to change it up and and the visuals and instructions are flabulous! Perfect for beginners and intermediate yoga lovers.

3 out of 5 stars Good concept, but I'm very disappointed.......2007-06-06

Let me start by apologizing for offending the tastes of Shiva Rea fans. I'm not really sure how this review could be SO unhelpful but keep a-voting, I stand by my opinion. This really is a nice concept, I like that you can choose your own workout or follow a set workout. This DVD also has some gorgeous cinematography. The main problem for me is Shiva, I personally don't enjoy her style of teaching at all. The poses she includes in this workout are not ones that I enjoy or find challenging. Another main gripe I have is that when you build your own workout it has poor "flow", and there is a pause for titling between each set section. The meditation at the end is short, and her words are nonsensical and make me want to laugh out loud. I never reach for this DVD and I can't see myself growing to love it. I realize this is a very popular DVD, which is why I purchased it, and that many of you will find my review unhelpful but it's just my honest opinion. I hope it helps someone! :)

1 out of 5 stars Way Too Fast.......2007-05-30

I used to do a yoga class and I thought this tape would be fun at home. It is way to fast on all the moves. All it is is a woman on a beach doing yoga with NO instruction on what she's doing. I wish I could return it.

5 out of 5 stars Shiva Rea- Yoga Shakti.......2007-05-28

I loved it! Well planned, nice flow, a pleasure to watch and practice with.

5 out of 5 stars Lunar Series good for siactic and putting me to sleep.......2007-05-25

There are four series put together, and multiples you can put together with this new form of programing. The basic is too basic for me, but I love the other choices, particularly the lunar. Don't be in a hurry though, the series are long, and it's up to you to adjust them if you want.

Things started going downhill for Eddie Murphy around the time of this 1986 clunker, in which the comic actor plays a social worker predicted to be the savior of a kidnapped child, who has special powers to heal the Earth. Dennis Feldman's script and director Michael Ritchie (The Candidate), a once-thoughtful satirist, stumble over every link in a chain of fantasy-fueled sequences. Murphy phones it in, and Charles Dance (Pascali's Island) looks foolish in retrospect. --Tom Keogh

What a terrible, low budget, movie. We could not finish it.

5 out of 5 stars The golden child.......2007-04-11

This is one of my husband's favorite movies so i picked this up for him.I don't care for this movie and thought it was boring but the kids loved it so four out of five people in my family loved it thats why i gave it five stars.

3 out of 5 stars Golden no, decent yes.......2007-03-29

This is certainly not one of Eddie Murphy's hits, but I think it deserves a look. This has enough of an interesting story, comedy, and decent acting to make it at least a decent rental. Fans of movies like "Big Trouble in Little China" and "The Phantom" are most likely to enjoy it the most. It is a bit of an oddball cross between an oriental story of mysticism and a US big city detective story with a little Murphy goofyness thrown in to boot. I will say the music sucks. That is one thing that probably hurt this movie the most. It is sounds like they tried to match rock music, poorly, to a mysticism movie. To bad John Carpenter didn't direct this and do the music, it would have been much better.

3 out of 5 stars The Golden Child.......2007-03-03

The Golden Child~ J.L. Reate is a pretty good movie but it is nowhere close to his best movies of the early 80's like Coming to America, Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop. Eddie Murphy is doing a great job in the role but his jokes are a bit lame since one has heard them in other movies before. The music is what makes this movie less then stellar. The music is terrible to say the least. It seems to me like they went way cheap on selecting the person to write the soundtrack and many other tracks sounds like cheap 80's music produced in someone's basement. The script is alright but it just that extra fun and excitement that other Eddie Murphy movies. Still and all this is not a bad movie and I give it the 3 stars that it deserves.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2006-09-04

Being a huge fan of Ash's I had to buy this film. Especially since it featured Abishek Bachchan as well. This was a very interesting film-by interesting meaning it played out a lot differently than I expected. I kept feeling like the movie was going to head in one direction, but then it headed in another.
The action, action, action was not what I expected, but because of this, the film might appeal to men more than say a love story like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanaam.

How I actually found out about this film was that I went to an Indian/Pak grocery a couple of cities away to check out what they had for a cd selection. I came across the soundtrack for this film, bought it, loved it, and THEN bought the film.

I have already watched it a couple of times and I've only had it for 3 days now, so I definately recommend the film and the
cd as well.

5 out of 5 stars Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke.......2006-04-20

This movie was fun to watch. I am a big time Aishwarya Rai fan and now I have a crush on Abhishek Bachchan. I don't want to give the movie away but it reminded of A Walk in the Clouds with Keanu Reeves. It' about a girl played by Ash who wants more out of life instead of getting married goes to college and her father is very upset with her and she meets Abishek at train station after witnessing a murder. He rescues her from the goons and so the movie begins the songs are nice, It is a fun movie.

5 out of 5 stars Love is the inspiration ..........2005-12-05

Some might call this film a bit clichéd, but there really are no clichés in Bollywood. For a while, I thought Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke was going to be a relatively simple Bollywood love story, but the film takes some nasty turns toward the end. That's what I love about Bollywood, though; you just can't pin one of these movies down, as it is constantly transforming itself into something else - so, when the end comes, it's always thrilling and emotional. I don't know how you can't love a film like this. It has everything: true romance (not that true lust junk Hollywood sells), suspense, drama, comedy, incredible music, and wonderful performances all around. Aishwarya Rai is particularly stunning here.

I hate to see my girl Aish unhappy, but her characters always seem to be put through the wringer. When we first meet Sahiba (Rai), she's running from a gang of killers; luckily for her, she is saved by an Army Captain named Karan (Abhishek Bachchan) who is on his way home to see his beloved Nisha for the first time in a year. After fate compels him to save Sahiba a second time, Karan tells her that he will take her back home and help her face her father. Dad had made Sahiba persona non grata after she, in an effort to stay in school and avoid an arranged marriage, told her family she was already married. Naturally, she's afraid to face her father's wrath. Sahiba is welcomed home with joy by all of her extended family, but Dad greets her with gunshots. Unable to explain his true relationship to Sahiba, Karan takes on the role of her husband and is forced to continue the charade for much longer than he ever planned. Part of the reason why he stays is the love that the family shows to him (except Dad, of course) - as an orphan, he had never experienced the joys of family life. As the days pass, things just get more and more complicated, as Karan is formally accepted into Sahiba's family. Sahiba, as you might expect, has fallen madly in love with Karan by this time, and she doesn't want him to leave. Leave he must, though, for he is anxious to see Nisha again. That's when things take some really dark turns, leaving a heartbroken Sahiba in very real danger. It makes for a decidedly intense ending, as true love is once again put to the most intensive of tests.

Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke is a wonderful story of true love, family ties, and the mysterious workings of fate - and it did feature a couple of late twists that took me by surprise. Bachchan is wonderful as Karan, but Aishwarya Rai really steals the show with her emotionally powerful performance and unsurpassed beauty. The movie boasts a wealth of wonderful songs performed against some truly awe-inspiring settings; three of the musical numbers are nothing short of spectacular - especially an engaging marriage song called Mera Mahi, which features Aishwarya Rai at her most jaw-droppingly stunning best. There is one aspect of the overarching love story I would like to have changed, but it's really just one teeny, tiny flaw in an otherwise gorgeous gem of a movie.

The DVD includes a theatrical trailer, five song promos, and a 15-minute Behind the Scenes featurette. Unfortunately, there are no subtitles for the behind-the-scenes look at the film, but some of the interviews include comments in English (and most of Aishwarya's comments are in English) - and it gave me the chance to put a face to Sameer, who has to be the most prolific (and gifted) lyricist on the planet.

3 out of 5 stars "While You Were Sleeping" -- The Hindi Version.......2007-03-13

OK I haven't actually seen this film yet, and will do a real review after I do. But from the synopsis, this film is apparently a complete plot remake of "While You Were Sleeping," a fabulous romantic comedy with Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman. It's going to be tough to beat the original. Salman Khan's not my favorite actor but I like Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta so I'm giving this 3 stars on approval. :)

Here's my question: did the producer clear the rights with the copyright holder of "While You Were Sleeping"?

    Description

What is the gospel according to Jesus? Simply this: that the love we all long for in our innermost heart is already present, beyond longing. -Stephen Mitchell, author of The Gospel According to Jesus. "Love your neighbor as yourself." -Imam Talib Abdur-Rashid The Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood, Harlem, NY "For if you forgive others their offenses, your heavenly Father will forgive you." -Maya Angelou Author/Poet, North Carolina No one in history has been as famous and widely interpreted as Jesus of Nazareth. For two thousand years, beginning with the Gospels, people have tried to capture the essence of his teachings in words, in art, in music - and in their daily experience. The Gospel According to Jesus continues the noble quest for Jesus' actual words. This translation and guide is based on poet/scholar Stephen Mitchell's popular book, which critics called "a masterpiece of immense power and permanence." You will see hundreds of people - from our most famous celebrities to the homeless poor - read and analyze this "living gospel." Participants include: Maya Angelou, Rev.Calvin Butts, Deepak Chopra, Ran Dass, Erica Jong, Norman Lear, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Rabbi Zalman Schacter-Shalomi, Marianne Williamson and many others.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Skeptics & Sages.......2007-02-20

The Gospel According to Jesus is presented by Norris J. Chumley. He takes Stephen Mitchell's book around American for comment and consideration. The September 1995 edition appears frequently throughout. While this is an intriguing way to market a book, the DVD turns out to be profoundly beautiful, humorous or revealing.

Christ's powerful words are read by people across America in situations that seem to give a visual reference. At times this enhances the words and at other times gives one pause.

A woman speaking of grief, sweeps away a tear. A family quotes passages about sowing and reaping while images from a farm are presented. People read passages while vacuuming, while writing, painting, sewing, working, swinging on a swing and even while their children laugh and dance for the camera. I think Jesus likes those sections especially well, to hear his words being read while children were present.

There are quite a few unbelievers who are willing to go along with reading from the book and this may cause some concern to anyone who considers Christ's words to be sacred. For some reason, I felt this was not a hindrance to Christ's message, although the author's exclusion of the resurrection seems a more serious decision. Ideas like "the Christ Consciousness" are discussed briefly.

Famous faces that appear include Maya Angelou, Deepak Chopra, Ram Dass, Erica Jong, Norman Lear, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. Their voices intermingle with a young girl who claims to be an atheist, a homeless woman on the street and a truck driver sitting in his truck with "JESUS" on a license plate in the front window.

The first section contains mostly people reading the word's of Christ and then in the second section many of the participants give their ideas about what Christ's teachings and life means to them. This crosses all cultural, religious and social boundaries.

The truth is, this seems to make Christ's words more accessible for the modern reader and it made me want to read the book. In the brief time I have walked this earth, I've noticed references to Jesus turning up in the most unlikely places - certain movies, books.

Jesus' wisdom, love and beautiful spirit lives from generation to generation in the heart's of anyone who is willing to look for his message. I think that even with the author's intention to dissolve parts of Christ's life story in his book, the people who believe in his resurrection share this idea on the DVD.

The idea of eternal life through a belief in Christ is not swept away in the mists of time; instead it again gives believers hope and unbelievers something to think about. I found the almost two hours of contemplation to be healing and comforting.

2 out of 5 stars Intresting but incomplete........2004-07-25

I just got done watching this movie. I found it interesting to hear some of Jesus Christ teachings from various people (young and old, Christians and buddist). But I found some of their comments of Christ teachings to be completely wrong. Also the fact that they leave out the greatest thing Jesus Christ did, which is the Resurrection. They had a little 10 minute spot where some believe and some didn't believe. The author reminds me of a friend I had who said she believed in Jesus, but didn't believe in the Bible.

If you are enjoy hearing other people thoughts on the Gospel, I say watch it. But don't look to it for any growth in your knowledge of Jesus Christ.
