A jewel of a sleeper, The Man in the Moon comes off as a nearly perfect short story of two sisters' first competition in the field of love. In a 1950's small Louisiana farm town, 14-year-old Dani falls for Court, a 17-year-old engaging neighbor boy. The two become great friends, but Court is more interested in Dani's 17-year-old sister, Maureen, who is blossoming. Dani will look for any justification why she should be with Court, but as human law dictates, there is no cure for a 14-year-old with a crush.
The film is another winning portrayal of small-town adolescence from Robert Mulligan (To Kill A Mockingbird). His eye for casting is impeccable, with Sam Waterston and Tess Harper as the earnest parents and newcomer Jason London as the dreamy Court. The real find, though, is Reese Witherspoon as Dani. Her timeless work here is magical. The PG-13 rating is a bit heavy-handed--although the film does not shy away from its look at budding sensuality, or a horrific and emotional accident. Mature 10-year-olds may find one of their favorite films here. --Doug Thomas

Description
Oscar(r) nominees* Sam Waterston and Tess Harper and veteran actress Gail Strickland (Norma Rae) join three talented newcomers in this deeply moving film (Los Angeles Times) about coming of age and sexual discovery in rural, 1950s Louisiana. Brilliantly directed by Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird, The Summer of 42), The Man in the Moon is a poignant and bittersweet tale Roger Ebert calls a wonderful movie...a victory...a meticulously prepared masterpiece. Fourteen-year-old Dani (Reese Witherspoon) and her older sister Maureen (Emily Warfield) have always shared everything. But when Court Foster (Jason London) moves in next door, the sisters become rivals as Dani experiences her first feelings of affection and Maureen finds the true love she's longed for. But with love comes heartache, and the sisters soon learn a tough life lesson when tragedy strikes and the strength of their bond is the only thing that will keep theirhearts from breaking. *1984: Actor, The Killing Fields; 1986: Supporting Actress, Crimes of the Heart

Excellent movie.......2007-05-15
This movie was a joy to watch. NO nudity, NO bad language, just a simple story line about a family, a real family, and how they handle life. I have seen this movie more than once and will probably see it again.
Great Love Story.......2007-05-08
This movie is a great love story (love triangle). Most guys would call this movie a chick flick. It has great stars in it such as Reese Witherspoon, Sam Waterson, Jason London, and Tess Harper. This movie is a real tear jerker! A must see!!!
Great Movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-10
I really like this movie! I just saw it two days ago,and I didn't like it that much. But,now that I think about it,I decided it was really great!!! It's about two sisters,Dani and Marueen.Dani is 14.First of all,she is in love...with ELVIS PRESLEY!!!!! But then, she falls in love with the boy living next-door.They go swimming ALOT together. They really like eachother.... until..... Court [which is the boy Dani likes]see's Dani's older sister Marueen, and falls in love with her. Then,Court becomes Marueen's boy-friend.Dani can't belive it! Near the end of the movie,an unexpected death takes place.I don't want to spoil it,so thats all I'm telling you.Buy it,rent it,it's SOOOO WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A Wonderful Movie.......2007-03-16
Absolutely excellent movie about a teenage kid (Reese W) who falls in love with a boy 3 years older who in turn falls for Reese's older sister, the acting is superb and Reese shows us in her debut movie what we have seen for many years now - that she is a great actress. this is a film for all ages that everyone can identify with - the teenage crush and subsequent heartbreak when things go wrong. the screenplay is exceptional and director Mulligan keeps the film interesting at all times.
A coming of age.......2007-01-11
Dani is in love with a boy next door, heartaches too.

Terrific And Very Funny Chinese Horror-Comedy!.......2007-04-23
I wish there were more films like this one. It's great to see parody in any genre. Moreover, it is necessary at times. Which leads us to this unique film "Mr. Vampire." Having first seen the film many years ago [release date around 1986], I originally owned an import VHS copy which was pretty choppy and bad to say the least. I was happy when the DVD was released and grabbed it up right away. That's how much I like this film. The film has action, horror and comedy. Those who are into Martial Arts films, however, may not find the film as much action-based as you might like. But it does deliver as a fun parody of Martial Arts action. Nevertheless, I did like the fight sequences and acting, and the film succeeds exceptionally well as a very funny film. Which is one of the reasons I bought the film initially anyway. This is a funny delight of cinema from Hong Kong, and I would recommend to viewers to check it out.
I don't wish to give away too much of the film, therefore, I will leave out some of the funnier sequences from this review. However, I will write that the film centers on one Master Gau (Ching-Ying Lam) and his two assistants Chou (Siu-hou Chin) and Man Choi (Ricky Hui). Master Gau is in the business of controlling vampires. Both he and his assistants [bumbling ones at that] are in for one funny romp. They are trying to cope with the rewawakened corpse of a man. However, things backfire, and the viewer is in for one exceptionally funny horror-comedy. In trying to deal with the very strong 'hopping vampires' the film progresses through a maze of slapstick comedy [But in a very good way] as it spoofs Kung Fu and gives a delightfully comedic twist to the horror genre. Also, Chinese bureaucracy and the police are dealt with in a funny and lampooning way.
Yes, there are silly parts in the film, but it's done in a hysterically funny way, and that's what makes this film so funny. Also, while garlic is the recipe in the West for combating Vampires: English and American films in particular, in China--it's sticky rice. I really like this film. It delivers in every way that one will find entertaining. With Master Gau up to his elbows in trying to help his two assistant's Man Choi and Chou from falling prey to the vampire curse they now battle, he also finds himself up against one tough super powerful vampire. Not at all like what we see in the vampires flicks here in the West. This is a great and entertaining film. I recommend the film highly. I enjoyed the film immensely, and still do. Highly recommended.
Temporarily Hold Your Breath.......2007-03-16
Don't let the title mislead you. The film title should have been translated as Mr. Zoombie instead of Mr. Vampire as these hopping ghosts are what we called zoombie. When the film was first released in the 80's, it was titled as Temporarily Stop Your Breathing. It was an enormous hit throughout Asia. 2 or 3 sequels were made afterwards. It also created a zoombie sensation in Japan. Among the Chinese zoombie movie, this one stood out the most as it succeeded in all three genres that it tried to achieve: action, comedy and horror.
Mr. Vampire, along with Chinese Ghost Story 1, is among my favorite films from the 80's.
Hop, hop and hop.
Sticky rice!.......2006-07-19
"Mr. Vampire" is a movie for people tired of angsty, gorgeous vampires with thick Transylvanian accents.
Instead, this hilarious supernatural comedy has a different kind of vampire -- the superstrong, zombielike "hopping vampire." And dealing with the hopping vampires are a long-suffering Taoist priest and his bumbling assistants, who add all sorts of wacky twists.
Master Gau (Ching-Ying Lam) agrees to help the wealthy Yam family move their patriarch's body -- until he sees the undecayed body. Turns out Grandpa is a vampire. And after his bumbling assistants fail to properly restrain the vampire, it gets loose, kills its son, and now the vampire hunters are facing TWO vampires instead of one.
To make matters worse, Man Choi (Ricky Hui) has been infected with vampire toxin, which will turn him into a vampire if they can't cure him with sticky rice, and Chou (Siu-hou Chin) is being seduced at night by a ghost. Master Gau must cure one, save the other, and somehow destroy a superpowerful vampire that invades the Yam household.
"Mr. Vampire" was such a success in China that it started a whole trend of "hopping vampire" movies. But as with most trends, the original is still the best and more entertaining example. And it incorporates traditional vampires and succubi from China, as well as little-known mythical trivia (such as sticky rice being the "garlic" for a Chinese vampire).
Expect lots of Peter Jacksonish twisted humor (Man Choi having his fangs filed down) alongside the more typical kind (Chou and Man Choi cast a spell to make their romantic rival strip in public). But when the vampires show up, there are plenty of wild, undignified action scenes. And lots of property damage -- they break every piece of furniture they come across.
The late Ching-Ying Lam became a star thanks to this movie, and his staid, unibrowed priest is a likable guy when you consider everything he has to deal with. Hui and Chin are hysterical as a pair of earnest but hormonal guys. They're kind of an annoyance when Gau isn't actually fighting vampires, but perhaps they're good for doing errands.
(Fortunately they also cleaned up the subtitling on this movie. The original subtitling was comically bad, but the new ones are are very well done)
"Mr Vampire" is one of China's better supernatural comedies, with weird vampires and lots of sticky rice. Hysterical and warped.
A classic film of undead martial arts tomfoolery.......2006-02-27
Very good.
The performances are excellent, and the broad humor is genuinely amusing. There's also a heck of a weird story with hopping vampires and a ghost lover. The Asian sensibility of these elements is what pushes this into the forefront. These are not Bram Stoker's undead, and even the ghost is much more physical than you'd ever see in an American film. And she can even shoot off her head, which is pretty damn neat.
This is an excellent movie for anyone looking for monsters, martial arts, and a healthy dose of humor. Can't recommend it enough. So see it already.
Chinese ghost tale keeps things hopping.......2005-09-23
Sifu, the One Eyebrow Priest, needs all his skill to vanquish a powerful "hopping ghost"(like Hsien-Ko in "Darkstalkers," but more vicious) without much help from his two likeable, less-than-bright pupils. A bite from this creature will turn the bitten one into another vampire-zombie-ghost. Quick, get the sticky rice!

Customer Reviews:
Not the real show.......2002-08-17
This DVD is horrible. This show is from Japan, and yet there is no option for a Japanese-language track. What about the fans of Sailor Moon who actually want the "real deal"? In the English version of the show, the plot is entirely different, entire scripts are changed, some episodes are completely cut out, and even the names of the characters are not the same. They have turned it into a completely different show. The company who did this DVD does a GREAT DISSERVICE to the pheonomenon that is Sailor Moon.
great episodes.......2002-08-12
The enchanting story of SAILOR MOON continues in this third volume of episodes from the first series.
Serena and Raye find themselves competing against each other to win a honeymoon trip to Hawaii in "Wedding Day Blues". Serena's friendship with a photographer leads to deadly complications in "Shutter Bugged". Sammy finds himself on the outer after smashing his friend's doll in "Dangerous Dollies". Molly's infatuation with the disguised Neflyte's alter-ego Maxfield Stanton almost kills her in "Who Is That Masked Man?". Animation school student Laurey finds herself a target of the Negaverse in "An Animated Mess" and in "Worth A Princess's Ransom", Luna and the girls attend the ball held in honor of the visiting Princess Diamond, convinced that it might be the elusive Moon Princess that they have been searching for.
Some fantastic episodes. Featuring the voice talents of Terri Hawkes and Mary Long.
Molly and Nephrite's love affair!.......2002-04-21
We see Serena engaged in battles and her wailing continues. Yet she manages to save the day! Hopefully they won't add any Sailor Moon says junk! I think that'll only cheap this DVD's value! Save that for the tapes!

A jewel of a sleeper, The Man in the Moon comes off as a nearly perfect short story of two sisters' first competition in the field of love.
Customer Reviews:

I love this movie!.......2007-03-11
This feature was filmed in Bridgeport CT....a few exits north of director Newman's and leading lady Woodward's family home in Westport. Newman created quite the stir when during the filming he described the city as "the armpit of New England". (HL Menkin refered to Pittsburgh PA as such- Newman only reapplied the quip.) Poor Bridgeport! There was a local film opening (I think it was in Westport) that I attended and later I saw this film a few times on TV. But it needs to be available on DVD already- who owns the rights?
"My heart is full.".......2007-03-03
I have not seen this movie since the early 80's and would love to own it on dvd. The before mentioned quote has stuck with me all these years!!!
This film did reconfirm Newman's stature as a director..........2006-12-28
Joanne Woodward starred as Beatrice Hunsdorfer ("Betty the Loon"), a loud, vulgar, gum-chewing, beer-drinking, unattractive middle-aged woman...
Living in a dilapidated house in a rundown town, abandoned by her husband, unable to face the responsibility of raising her two teenaged daughters' she is disgusted with life... She covers her despair with sarcasm, outrageous jokes and a tough, insensitive treatment of the girls... But she's also pathetic, as she checks the classified ads for business opportunities, and dreams of opening dignified teashops, even though her house is filled with garbage and she's a frightful mess...
The film focuses on the way Beatrice's savage, cynical, often self-deprecating humor and her embittered outlook have affected her daughters. Ruth, the older girl, is a typical adolescent boy-chaser and baton-twirler, who, like Beatrice, employs a tough, sarcastic manner to hide her fears and frustration... Shattered by nightmares and epileptic fits, she sinks hopelessly into defeat...
Matilda is shy, sensitive and introverted... Although it seems that she should succumb, she overcomes her environment and emerges strongest... An extremely intelligent science student, Matilda wins a prize for her experiment on mutated flowers that gives the drama its symbolic title; and she becomes a mutant herself--a delicate flower growing out of arid waste...
The play is transformed from a lyrical mood-piece into a naturalistic slice-of-life in the tradition of the fifties television drama Newman admires... This makes the symbolism somewhat obtrusive, and the emphasis on external squalor--the filthy house, for example--is overdone and superficial...
Newman's attempts to open up the play are largely successful--scenes of Matilda's science teacher explaining the mysteries of the universe, Ruth's accurate imitation of Beatrice in a school skit, and a teenaged mad scientist explaining with sadistic relish how she skinned a cat, are especially memorable...
As in "Sometimes a Great Notion," there's a real feeling for family life, although the emphasis is reversed: here it's a world of women in which men play a marginal role... Newman expertly handles the shifts from vigorous burlesque to black humor to terror to pathos... And as before, he uses the camera functionally, bringing it close to his actresses to achieve intimacy and character revelation...
Woodward again displays remarkable range... As the shrewish, noisy woman, she's at once horrifying and humorous, but her suggestion of underlying vulnerability arouses our compassion... There's even the familiar inner radiance, indicating a beautiful woman beneath the flamboyance... As Ruth, Roberta Wallach is a perfect amalgam of the tough, shallow teenager and the pathetic, defenseless baby...
The standout performance is by Nell Potts, the Newmans' thirteen-year-old, who played Rachel as a child, and here plays a Rachel-like character... As Matilda, she's a model of understatement, with her soft, fragile voice, subtle expressions of nervousness, and luminous blue eyes that, like her father's, seem to be quietly assimilating everything--sometimes disapproving but more often understanding...
The film did reconfirm Newman's stature as a director... In his three features he has shown an ability to work with a wide range of material, and if he lacks an original style, he does have a feeling for constructing powerful images and scenes... Above all, he was one of today's finest directors of performers, which has become almost a lost art...
Powerful drama - PLEASE put this on DVD, somebody!.......2006-08-05
Let me add my plea for someone to release this quiet, powerful, wonderfully acted film on DVD. Like more recent films such as The Ice Storm, Affliction, and Brokeback Mountain, Marigolds shows ordinary people struggling against problems that are beyond their ability to solve, sometimes winning a little, sometimes losing a little - or a lot. The film is all the more heartbreaking because those who struggle and, perhaps, lose are young people as well as adults. But even in their defeat, they endure, and that in itself is a kind of victory.
My VHS copy, taped 20 years ago off cable TV, is about at the end of its useful life. Some studio with a heart, PLEASE obtain the rights to this and give us a DVD. Forget the cost of interactive menus, forget the cost of special features, forget the filmographies and the bios and the previews of upcoming attractions. Just get the best copy you can find, clean up the video and sound to a reasonable degree, and give us this powerful film on DVD.
The best of Joanne Woodward .......2006-07-28
I just saw this movie on television. I was just blown away by Joanne Woodward's portrayal of the mother. Her character is so believeable and real. The two girls in the film are just stand-outs. It's a complicated plot with complicated characters, a real actor's movie. I want to purchase the DVD just as soon as it's released. If anyone is a Joanne Woodward fan or likes a good story with good acting, this is it.
