This film features the wonderfully understated duet of Robert Duvall and James Earl Jones, two old pros who know just how to stay out of each other's way while offering superb support. Duvall plays Earl Pilcher, an aging Southerner whose mother dies, leaving him a letter with a startling secret: in fact, she was not his mother, though she raised him--but his father is really his father. His real mother was a black servant whom his father forced himself upon, and she died in childbirth. Even more shocking, he has a black brother in Chicago, Ray (Jones). Stunned to his soul, Earl heads for Chicago, where he finds that Ray not only knows his secret but wants nothing to do with him. Slowly, however, in this marvelously drawn script by Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, the two brothers find common ground. The theme--about discovering a family bond where none existed before--works better than the story-telling, which is a shade predictable. Watch for a great supporting performance by actress Irma Hall, who plays the aunt of both men. --Marshall Fine

Based on Anna Quindlen's bestselling novel, this is a mother-daughter and father-daughter story, two for the price of one. But director Carl Franklin also tries to inject a police-mystery angle that it neither needs nor will support. Renee Zellweger plays a young writer on the rise, who has finally gotten her break for a New York magazine. While home for a birthday party for her nearly famous writer father (William Hurt), she learns that her mother (Meryl Streep) has been diagnosed with cancer. Then her father does the unthinkable: He all but commands her to put her career on hold to take care of her mother and nurse her through her illness. Dad, a popular college professor who has never gotten the literary acclaim he always believed he deserved, essentially checks out--and daughter must play parent to her mother. Strong performances by Streep and Zellweger give this parent-child relationship the heart--and the anger--of the real thing, while Hurt seems slightly disembodied as the self-involved father whose needs have dominated both women. Still, the detective-story aspect (the film is told in flashback, as the cops try to discover whether someone slipped Mom a fatal dose of morphine) is a construct that could have been done without. --Marshall Fine

Believable.......2007-06-16
I had a hard time putting into words how I feel about One True Thing. This is a believable movie about one families' struggle to battle their mother's cancer. Through their journey they were able to come closer as a family and learn more about each other....until the end where they learn the one true thing.
I really think that Meryl Streep did a fantastic job at playing Kate, the mother. It was almost life-like.
If anyone has ever seen anyone struggle with a disease, they can identify with this movie. Be forewarned, tissues are a must. :-(
A view to a soul!.......2007-05-16
Ellen (Zellwegger) is a rising star with a New York magazine that may have just gotten her big break and chance to 'wow' her literary professor father (Hurt) with her new found success.
After she returns home to attend a birthday party for her father she learns that her mother (Streep) has been diagnosed with cancer. Ellen's father guilts her into saying that she will put her future on hold and move home to help care for her mother. In Ellen's eyes her father was strong and authoritative, intelligent and stoic; while her mother was silly and naïve and involved herself in frivolous, meaningless things.
Over the course of her mother's care Ellen begins to see things in a different light. Convinced that her father is cheating on her mother while she has been forced to be the caregiver she begins to blaze a new path of consciousness. In a twist of circumstance Ellen comes to realize that her father never had an original thought of his own and that her mother was the backbone of the family...the one who understood the capacity of each member of the family and the one that soothed and protected the wounds of missed opportunities and bore the brunt of failures. She was his "One True Thing."
One True Thing
Life is full of surprises.......2006-08-12
A close, loving and stable family is knocked back on its heels when Mum (Meryl Streep), the strong uniting force develops cancer. Dad (John Hurt) is too busy with his career as a university professor and head of department to look after mum and it is inconceivable to employ a nurse, even though there is money enough to do it, so it falls to the daughter (Renée Zellweger) to put her career at risk to look after her. She makes an enormous sacrifice and performs miracles looking after her mum but her dad doesn't really appreciate it and carries on with his own career and affairs. The son does very little to help and on top fails his exams. The daughter finds out some quite unpalatable things about her dad which she thinks mum doesn't know. We see poor mum gradually dying from cancer and in the end the pain and suffering is too much and she is dispatched to the better life. But who did it? The daughter, dad or.......
On the whole a very good, engrossing film. I shall watch it again soon.
One, true great movie.......2006-04-10
This movie has it right even before we know what it's about just by the casting itself. When you have an amazing cast like Meryl Streep, Wiliam Hurt and Renee Zelwegger etc 9 times out of ten you can't go wrong. Then when we do find out what the story to this movie is we realise just how wonderful it is. There's no need to give a synopsis of this film considering Amazon do it for us but I wanted to rate this movie to advise anyone who hasn't seen this film to rent it immediately. If you like a movie with real human emotion, realistic storylines and fantastic acting this is the film to watch.
One True Thing.......2005-10-23
This film is so well performed by Meryl Streep, William Hurt, and especially Renee Zellweger, that I could experience the frustrations of each of the characters. I felt the pain of Meryl Streep and her stress brought on by her inability to do the things that she loved to do for her family and home. I felt the struggle of William Hurt trying to receive acclaim for his literary work, and having it forgotten by the one person, whose opinion meant so much to him. I felt the resentment that Renee felt being thrust into a situation that she felt could have been dealt with by her father. I felt her ineptness trying to make a meal for her mother's friends and being unable to manage it the way her mother was accustomed to doing. I felt her sense of being trapped into giving up her career opportunity to stay and help her mother. I also felt her accepting and being glad to be there for her mother as her illness progressed to the end.
A magnificently played film all around

The thing about Ben's folks is that, after four decades, they're breaking up. It starts when Sam (Peter Falk) finds a letter from Muriel (Olympia Dukakis). She's gone off to find herself, he tells Ben (writer/producer Paul Reiser, Mad About You) and daughter-in-law Rachel (Elizabeth Perkins). He isn't as upset as he is confused. Mostly, he thinks it's just a misunderstanding. Ben and Rachel offer to let him stay with them, so he starts spending all his time with his son. Sam doesn't have anything else to do and Ben, a freelance writer, can't bring himself to say no. Meanwhile, Ben's older sisters put their heads together to determine where their mother has gone and to make sure she's all right. After a bumpy start, Ben and Sam bond while on a road trip through upstate New York. The Thing About My Folks is sensitively acted by a talented cast and appears to have been made with love (Reiser wrote the part of Sam specifically for Falk). It elicits a few laughs and even a few tears, but the language is unnecessarily profane--no one would confuse the Kleinmans for the Sopranos--and the humor can be a little crass--for a film aimed at adults, gags about flatulence seem ill-advised. Still, Reiser's heart is in the right place. Sometimes that can be enough, although Raymond De Felitta's previous film, Two Family House, is a more original look at the complexities of family life. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
The Thing About My Folks is a heart warming tale of family bonds and enduring love. After 47 years of marriage, Ben's (Reiser) mother unexpectedly leaves her husband. With no where else to turn, Ben's father Sam (Falk) is forced to spend time and get to know his son. Hysterical antics ensue as Ben and Sam strengthen their father/son relationship while Ben helps his father rekindle the romance with his mother.

Sunshine.......2007-05-08
We saw the movie and it was great - this was a gift and they loved it!!!
A Beautiful Story.......2007-03-15
I thought this was a great story, it was one the whole family can and should watch together. It was a real story, it makes you realize how short and beautiful life is and the acting was from the heart, a classic...
Apples and Oranges.......2007-01-22
Paul Reiser steps away from the standup comedy spotlight to write a warmly humorous and gently tender story about family - what we see and what we don't see, what we expect and what surprises us. THE THING ABOUT MY FOLKS doesn't set any new standards for film, but it is a fine little story well told that reminds us about the significant bonds that family represents.
Sam Kleinman (Peter Falk) has been a workaholic, at times pushing his wife Muriel (Olympia Dukakis), his daughters (Mackenzie Connolly and Lydia Jordan), and his son Ben (Paul Reiser) into the background. One day Muriel leaves a note that after years of marriage she is leaving! Her daughters, along with Ben's wife Rachel (Elizabeth Perkins) immediately begin the search for her whereabouts, leaving the confused and hurt and disgruntle Sam to sort things out on a road trip with son Ben. The road trip becomes a time for the two men to learn who each other is and what they each mean to their status as father and son and as family members. Sam relaxes for the first time in his life and introduces the now workaholic Ben to the pleasures and fun of living. The trip comes to an end with a phone call about the whereabouts of Muriel and why she left and the regrouping of the wiser family draws the story's warm ending. All is not what it seemed: it's better and, well, different.
Falk and Reiser play off each other like the pros they are, but in many ways the film belongs to the brief moments when Olympia Dukakis is on screen, reminding us that she is one of our strongest matriarchs on film.
Well worth viewing. Grady Harp, January 07
Peter Falk movie.......2007-01-04

Father And Son Bonding--A Slight And Unassuming Little Film For Those Who Like that Sort Of Thing.......2006-11-14
"The Thing About My Folks" is a pleasant, if not at all surprising, little diversion. In a bit of male wish fulfillment, a man and his father find themselves on an unlikely roadtrip--and thus have the time to learn about one another and bond in ways previously foreign to them both. This seriocomic adventure stars Paul Reiser and Peter Falk as the duo, and the piece was obviously put together as an ode to familial love. What little boy doesn't yearn to spend more time with his dad? Apparently, even into adulthood, that's not something you ever get over.
After a fairly contrived and perfunctory beginning, our guys get on the road. Their escapades are pleasingly familiar which means that we're treated to a lot of cliche'd moments. As you might expect--we get ballgames, camping, fishing, drinking, smoking, carousing with women, and any other father/son interaction you might hope for. It's all very tame, though, but there is a warm humor to be had throughout. Naturally, they grow closer and there are some sweet (and completely expected) moments.
There is nothing particularly wrong with "The Thing About My Folks"--it's just so safe and unassuming. I suspect many will be attracted to it's comfortable feeling and experience a tugging sensation on their heartstrings. It has the feel of a good Cable TV movie, and never strives to be anything other than pleasant. In that it succeeds, it's pleasant. It is good to see Falk back in a leading role, and he makes the most of it. It's a very likable performance.
People who like the "warm and fuzzies" should like this film--but if it sounds like it's not your type of film, it probably isn't. KGHarris, 11/06.

Description
OscarÂ(r) winner* Robert Duvall stars with the legendary James Earl Jones in this powerful yet tender film from director Richard Pearce (Leap of Faith) and co-writers Billy Bob Thornton (Academy AwardÂ(r) winner** for Sling Blade) and Tom Epperson. "Fresh and thought-provoking" (Rex Reed), this touching story is steeped in life-affirming insights and down-to-earth sincerity. Duvall is Earl Pilcher, Jr., an Arkansas man who is about to discover the surprise of his life: the family he never knew he had. When he learns that he has an African-American half-brother living in Chicago, Earl heads north on a journey that will take him closer to home than he ever could have imagined. It won't be easy, though, since his brother (Jones) wants nothing to do with him. But with the help of their remarkable Aunt T (Irma P. Hall) and her simple wisdom, the men work through their long-held grudges and prejudices, gaining a greater understanding of each other andthemselves. *1983: Actor, Tender Mercies **1996: Writing (Screenplay based on Material Previously Produced or Published), Sling Blade

A Family Thing.......2007-01-18
We are very pleased with this DVD. The quality is excellent and we are happy to add it to our collection.
A Great Movie.......2007-01-12
I saw this movie in the theater when it came out. I thought it was great and when I had the opportunity to add it to my home collection, I did. I had a Girl's Nite In (dinner and a movie) and the four of us thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I would recommend this for middle school and high school students as a lesson in tolerance and family issues. Two great actors. I wish they would make a sequel to show how Earl's side of the family reacts to the situation. It would complete the circle.
On eof the greatest.......2005-01-31
This is one of my all time favorite movies. It's certainly my favorite Duvall movie. James Earl Jone is great; the whole cast is wonderful. It should have won all kinds of awards. I stumbled upon it accidentally, and was pleasantly surprised.
WHAT HAPPENED TO IRMA P. HALL'S OSCAR NOMINATION?.......2005-01-28
When this film first came out, all the critics agreed that Irma P. Hall would get a Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nomination. What happened? Such a disappointment that her wonderful performance didn't get the recognition it deserved. A wonderful film. The only criticism I have is that the Chicago locations used are all mixed-up and not set up the way they really are in town.
Intriguing theme and two fine actors, but a bit predictable........2004-12-30
This 1996 film has two of my favorite actors: Robert Duvall and James Earl Jones. And Billy Bob Thornton was one of the screenwriters. It also has an intriguing theme.
Robert Duval is cast as Earl Pitcher Jr, a 60 year old auto body shop owner in Arkansas. He's as southern as can be and the scene is set so well that we can almost feel the heat of the hot summer. His mother is dying and he rushes home to her bedside. A few days after the funeral, the minister comes to call. He gives Earl a letter that his mother asked to be delivered after her death. When he read the letter, his life changes forever.
The letter reveals that his mother is not really his birth mother. His real mother is an African American servant girl who was impregnated by his father. The baby was born perfectly white and the real mother died in childbirth. And so the white women raised the baby as her own. This has been a secret all these years.
In the letter, his mother reveals that the African American woman had an older child who was thought to now be a policeman in Chicago. She urges Earl to try to connect with his brother. And so, he drives his pickup truck to Chicago in order to find his black brother. That's quite a setup for a plot.
James Earl Jones is cast as his brother. And Irma P. Hall is cast as Auntie T, who is in her eighties and remembers everything. Oh, and one more thing. Auntie T is blind.
The two men meet and clearly don't like each other. And then, as Earl is leaving Chicago, his truck is carjacked and he is slightly injured. He winds up staying in James Earl Jones' house for a few days. Naturally there are complications. And this is also where the plot becomes a little predictable. There's an upbeat ending too, of course.
No matter though. The acting and concept were so good that I just couldn't stop watching. And I found myself thinking about the situation long after the film ended. Therefore, I cannot help but recommend this film.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a modern-day couple as impossibly glamorous as Rupert Everett and Madonna; their casting as common folk in the gay-parenting drama The Next Best Thing is just one of the film's myriad problems. (One thing we never needed to see was these two pushing grocery carts in a supermarket. It's just unnatural.) Best friends in sun-dappled L.A. (he's a landscaper, she's a yoga instructor), Abbie (Madonna) and Robert (Everett) fall into an amorous embrace on a fateful Fourth of July after a few too many martinis. Robert's gay, which complicates things; even more complicating is Abbie's confession a few weeks later that she's with child. Six years later, Robert, Abbie, and their son Sam are all living together peacefully and happily--that is, until a hunky investment banker (Benjamin Bratt) starts making eyes at Abbie, throwing their carefully constructed dynamic into disarray.
Lazily directed by Oscar-winner John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy) with an eye towards his actors' muscle tone rather than characterizations (even the kid does yoga), the faults in The Next Best Thing aren't solely on the shoulders of its miscast stars, but rather the painfully inept screenplay by Tom Ropelewski. With cardboard dialogue that sounds like bad first-draft material--including wailing by Madonna about how she can't find a man (ha!) and a gym-buffed Everett complaining about gay male body image (double ha!)--the movie stumbles from domestic comedy to custody-suit tragedy when it takes a bizarre left turn in the third act. Any statements about new definitions of family are buried underneath these dubious events, which (of course) provide teary courtroom outbursts for both leads. Everett has a quick way with a one-liner, and Madonna is more relaxed than she's ever been in a film, but Schlesinger just tosses them in front of the camera with no help whatsoever; the supporting cast, including Lynn Redgrave, Neil Patrick Harris, and Illeana Douglas, is also left to flounder inexplicably. There's a thoughtful and provocative movie to be made about gay parents, but The Next Best Thing certainly isn't it. --Mark Englehart

Poor Madonna.......2007-04-25
"The Next Best Thing"
Poor Madonna
Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
"The Next Best Thing" has a lot going for it. Rupert Everett is a charming and gay leading man, the script is based on a very cute idea--a straight woman and a gay man decide to have a child. The problem is the leading lady, Evita herself, Madonna, just can't act. As Evita Peron she won a Golden Globe but she has not acted decently in any movie she has made besides that one role. I was all ready to be entertained by this film and I was entertained by the scenes without Madonna.
The plot in a very concise way goes like this--two best friends, a gay male (Everett) and a straight female (Madonna) spend the night together, she gets pregnant, they have a son whom they raise together and then she meets a straight man she wants to marry and the whole mess gets messier.
The premise for the movie is good but the script is just awful--there is no continuity, the characters are completely underdeveloped and Everett comes out looking as the bad guy. The child is somewhere and we hate everyone in the movie. The bad guy is the bad guy, the good gay guy is the bad guy, the child is the bad guy, and the boyfriend is the bad guy and so on and on. Madonna is obnoxious. For someone who cries all the time she looks beautiful. She plays a woman let down by one man too many and when she sleeps with her gay fried, she gets pregnant. And then the movie slides toward a mudslide. Now I love Madonna--when she sings and she still is looking good but she is not an actress--wait--she is an actress--a lousy one. A stellar cast with Madonna and Everett, Benjamin Bratt and Lynn Redgrave should make a stellar movie. Instead the made a real stinker. Maybe that is why it moved so fast--so we would not see how bad it is. In fact, it is so bad that it is good. Madonna's vapidity mesmerized me, Benjamin Bratt astounded me at how bad he was, Rupert Everett--I love you but you were terrible and Lynn Redgrave had a few seconds on the screen and was lost.
I rarely give anything a bad review--if something is bad, I choose not to write about it and I would not have written about this movie if I thought it was really bad. But this is not just really bad--it is politically too correct and pitifully awful. Rupert Everett, I am so sorry.
Watchable, .......2007-02-14
This film has suffered very, very bad publicity and very, very bad reviews. But if you choose to see it open-minded, you might just get to like this mess.
"The Next Best Thing" initially sets itself up as a comedy. Robert (played by Rupert Everett) is always there for his best friend Abbie (Madonna), especially when it comes to comfort her over her terrible taste in men. And since he's also keen on men, he gives her a few pointers along the way. However, after a few drinks (and an unbelievably entertaining Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers act), Abbie gets pregnant. The viewer is then quite surprised when the whole thing turns serious and chaotic as Robert and Abbie decide to live and raise the baby together, and then struggle with problems concerning their family, friends and Abbie's new sweetheart (Benjamin Brett).
Now, the good thing about this film are its stars. Although it's hard to believe that it's taken them 30 minutes of the film to sleep together and that Madonna can't find a man in L.A., they are irresistible. Everett is top-notch as always and Madge has rarely seemed as much at home with a part as she does in this film. They are able to pull off the comedic parts and are good enough when the film surprisingly evolves into a study of family life.
However, the second half of the film doesn't really work. The problem is that "The Next Best Thing" is made of too many different influences and styles connected with very loose bonds. Are you able to go through a sitcom, a melodrama, and a courtroom drama in one film? Yes , it's quite possible to watch the ups and downs of this glamorous couple, but it can be difficult to digest the way they are developed.
This Madonna Movie Had Potential but..........2005-12-31
She keeps on trying doesn't she, our Mads, like the trooper she is. No matter how many times the critics trash her. Honestly, this movie had a lot of potential, with an interesting story line that tackled a kind of a modern day re-definition of family units and the moral dilemmas and choices involved. With its very worthy supporting cast it could have really gone somewhere but just failed to get there.
Madonna god bless you, I truly wish you could read this because I have two bits of stern advice which I'm sure many others would agree with, to help your (flailing) acting career, if it's not too late. Firstly, get some major voice coaching! Your delivery of dialogue is so unbelievably stilted and wooden at times. It's like you've just learnt the script. And what is up with this phoney pseudo half British half American accent you put on? Was that supposed to be part of your character development or research?. Even though her gay best friend 'Robert' is British, the audience would assume 'Abbie' is just an American living in LA. Besides which, it just sounded so fake. I mean we know you've become a bit of an 'Anglo-Phile' now that you're married to a pom (Australian slang for 'English person'), but you don't have to make it part of every character you play now do you? Concentrate on your acting craft before you start with the specialty accents luv. Meryl streep you aint. Secondly, if you want us to believe in Madonna the actress you've got to leave out Madonna the pop star just for a moment, and quit with the mindless marketing of your pop image, just for the sake of selling more records. My god woman, why does nearly everyone of your movies have to feature your music in the soundtrack somewhere? That scene early on in the film, where you all sing American Pie, at the gay friend's lover's funeral, was just sooo embarrassingly contrived and unnecessary. And quite frankly, fond as I am mostly of your music, your recorded version of 'American Pie' was very weak. Just lifeless.
I know I am being a bit harsh but someone really needs to tell you these things, or rather you really need to hear them,'cause I have actually been a fan of yours from the beginning. Despite your money hungry commercialism, you're an amazing artist and woman in so many ways. I see the potential in your performances often and you have an incredible presence on stage and screen that cannot be denied. But when it comes to the craft of acting a lot more subtlety and discipline is required and you need to learn a bit of humility darling, come down to earth.
Now, as for the redeeming features of this movie, and there are some. I would love Rupert Everett in anything he does. He's so cleverly sardonic and witty in that classy British way. Unfortunately though he is sold rather short here due to a poor script and mediocre direction, but I still enjoyed his performance. I must say I did feel awfully sorry for Robert near the end. He must have felt, intentionally or not, tricked and used by Abbie in a way. I mean she really should have taken responsibilty to ensure who the father was initially, don't you think?. Benjamin Bratt is most easy on the eye and a welcome hetero-sexual addition. Also, I loved the colourful 'Sante Fe' style design and setting. As well as Madonna 'hippyish yoga teacher' chic, (though the yoga thing is also somewhat contrived, no doubt Madonna's influence?) Lastly, there are moments (yes some) when Madonna's acting and character are believable. I always find her the most convincing in her character's more casual, fun moments. Which makes me think she is better suited to lighter comedic roles like earlier on in her career. The kid who plays Sam is quite natural and cute. In reality though that poor child would be left feeling so torn and confused after all that had occurred. He's faced with the prospect of three fathers (or at least father roles) in his life. Overall I quite enjoyed the first part, but really lost interest when the 'same old, same old' court room battle scene came around. This movie isn't a total waste of time and it's always interesting to see what 'Queen Madonna' will come up with next.
Take a deep breath, relax - and enjoy!.......2005-12-07
Have you ever bought at the stock market when everybody told you to sell - and won? That's what happened to me with this film. After buying almost all of John Schlesinger's films, I hesistated before ordering this one - in view of all that criticism. But then I assumed that - 1) Schlesinger cannot suddenly make a bad film after making so many excellent ones, and - 2) if so many bad things are said about a film it must somehow be good. Luckily, I was right this time.
Perhaps much of all that criticism springs from unjustified expectations. Let me try to put two points right: First: this is not a film about Madonna, or by Madonna. She is just an actress here - and a good one, just right for the part. Schlesinger does not present her as a singer or a sex symbol - but as a person. Secondly: Nobody has made a promise that this will be an in-depth, politically correct exploration of gay life. This is just a film - and an entertaining one. There is no law in the land that says a gay person cannot be a times a trifle ridiculous or sentimental, like other persons.
Therefore I recommend you follow the advice Madonna gives in her part as a Yoga teacher: Take a deep breath and relax - just enjoy this as another very good Schlesinger film - a real work of art.
Patronising.......2005-05-22
This movie treats gays like preteens keen on, but too afraid to have sex with women. It reeks with anti-gay stereotypes without even being funny. It could be described as Madonna's ego trip delusion that all gay men are hot for her.

The premise sounds like the most crass 1980s teen sex comedy imaginable: A teenage boy dying of cancer makes a last wish to spend a weekend alone with a supermodel. Yet One Last Thing... is neither crass nor a sex comedy, but rather a surprisingly touching exploration of taking chances, mortality, spirituality, and the price of love. Dylan (Michael Angarano, Sky High) has been granted a conventional dying wish by a foundation, but at the televised press conference he changes his mind and asks for a weekend with blond sex symbol Nikki Sinclair (Sunny Mabrey, Snakes on a Plane). The consequences unfold realistically: The supermodel (who has her own problems) and her agent (Gina Gershon, Bound) show up for a brief photo opportunity, then split--but Dylan, with the help of his friends, goes to New York to follow up on her promise to go out with him if he visits. The core of One Last Thing... is Dylan's relationship with his mother (Cynthia Nixon, Sex and the City), one of the most real and affecting mother-son relationships on film. The actors--including an uncredited Ethan Hawke (Before Sunset)--are uniformly excellent, giving this potentially absurd set-up a remarkable emotional integrity. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Meh........2007-04-10
There was promise at the beginning that this could be a good non-sentimental movie about a young boy coming to terms with his imminent death. So, we have to suspend our disbelief when he takes off for New York to woo a supermodel. Alright, I can do that. But then we have to add in a bit of a subplot with the old mom going for evening strolls with the good-looking football player. It was really one too many impossible relationships for me to buy into. The movie went all over the place, and not in a good way. Felt like they were BSing their way through to the end of the movie. And all the flashback/hallucinations got tiresome fast. It's not that there weren't any redeeming qualities to the movie, but that those qualities were diluted and squandered by the end.
Lacks Consistency........2007-01-23
In ONE LAST THING, Dylan (Michael Angarano) is a teenager who is dying of terminal brain illness. At a Make-A-Wish-type organization, Dylan is expected to ask to spend a day fishing with a professional football player he has idolized for years. Prompted by a conversation with his two best friends earlier, Dylan instead wishes that he would like to spend one evening alone with supermodel Nikki Sinclaire (Sunny Mabrey). The foundation people are shocked as is Dylan's mother, Carol (Cynthia Nixon). However, the announcement quickly makes Dylan a mini-celebrity for having the balls to ask for something that apparently every guy on the planet would want. Eventually, Carol goes along with her son's wish and does everything she can to help him see it become a reality. Meanwhile, Nikki's life is in major turmoil. She's gained the reputation of being a diva and no amount of booze, drugs, or sex with her current boy toy seem to help. She's dropped from a major gig. Her publicist, after hearing of Dylan's request, sees it as the perfect PR opportunity for Nikki to revamp her career. They meet and greet and take a photo and leave. Everyone's happy, right? Not quite. Dylan's determined to spend an evening with Nikki and leaves for a trip with his two friends to New York City to convince her to spend one evening with him. Of course, all the while Dylan's headaches are getting worse and he keeps seeing images of his dead father.
I'll give ONE LAST THING credit for trying to be a resonant film full of dark comedy that doesn't treat its subject matter lightly. Dylan is going to die and the film goes into detail exploring how the boy faces death.
However, despite this attempt ONE LAST THING really doesn't work and I did not enjoy it very much. It got better half-way through, but it never did grab my attention. One might wonder why because the cast is excellent, the writing is decent, and there is both witty comedy and serious drama involved. The pacing feels right and the look of the film doesn't seem out of the place.
Nevertheless, the movie never really gels; it never finds a consistent tone. If the film were a novel one would say that the authors fail to show any sign of an original style. The filmmakers behind ONE LAST THING are relatively new, so style isn't an issue, yet, but tone is. The movie deals with some important issues and has some black humorous moments, but the two never mesh. One moment the movie feels like a serious drama, the next it seems like it longs to be a dark comedy. Back and forth. Up and down. There is no consistency.
It should also be noted that even though the movie has sometimes been promoted as having a "spiritual" message, it does not. Several times in the movie Dylan is given an opportunity to explore spirituality, but he rejects each attempt. He makes it very clear that he doesn't believe in God. Yet, when he dies he appears to go to Heaven where his earthly father is waiting. To some it might appear that this is a spiritual moment, but in reality it is not. It is a blatant promotion of universalism.
Exquisitely crafted and heartwarming surprise.......2006-12-14
Since the earliest days of theater, tragedy and comedy often go hand-in-hand, and it's at the heart of this story. As they say, "you'll laugh, you'll cry." The power of this film comes from the script by Barry Stringfellow and a brilliant cast, led by Michael Angarano. Arguably the most sought-after teenage actor in America, Angarano is finally beginning to tackle some powerful leading roles. As Sky High's Will and Lords of Dogtown's Sid we saw just a hint of the powerful range of Angarano's abilities, and in One Last Thing he uses both his comedic talents as well as dramatic ones in a way that we haven't really seen before. If you liked Sid, you'll love Dylan.
Angarano has an uncanny ability to make us laugh when we want to cry and to make us cry when we want to laugh. It's a real gift, and one which is evident in films like Dear Wendy and Lords of Dogtown. But here is able to use that gift from opening to closing credits. Anyone who has seen his films will not be surprised at how elegantly he slips into this character, but no doubt others who are not as familiar with his body of work will discover what many already know.
To say that this is a film about a boy's carnal desires in his last days is to miss the point. Even more than that, One Last Thing is about coping with loss - a son's loss of his father and a mother's loss of her son. It's also about the search for love. "Carpe diem," if you will. The mother here is Cynthia Nixon, who is absolutely heartbreaking in a performance that can only come from deep within. This is a role that lesser actors would find daunting. Who among us hasn't experienced a similar loss? On the other hand, nothing can compare to seeing your child go before you do.
The "love object" (of Dylan - there are others here) is played by Sunny Mabrey. She is the image that has been but a poster on his wall, and his quest to fulfill his dream is only as powerful in its resolution as Mabrey is in her ability to make a petulant supermodel a sympathetic character. But she pulls it off effortlessly. Dylan's partners in crime are his two best buds, Slap and Ricky (Gideon Glick and Matt Bush), who provide much of the comic relief in what would otherwise have threatened to be a heavy-handed statement on death and spiritual belief. Their lines elicit the most laughs and the fact that these were two "real" teenagers, both acting in their first film, gives their performances a ring of truth which more jaded veterans might actually have had to fight to find.
But what struck me more than anything was just how incredibly economical Steyermark and editor Michael Berenbaum are in their work. This is one of the most efficiently constructed films I've ever seen. The tendency lately seems to be to build slowly, sometimes spending up to a third of the film on character development before you begin to see the story unfold. Not here. The basic plot is presented in the very first scene, literally in the opening minutes of the film. From that point on not a moment is wasted - not a shot, not a line, not a frame. Every second here is valuable to the story and yet nothing feels rushed. What a breath of fresh air this was in a season of pretentious, "look-at-me-I'm-an-indie-filmmaker" projects.
Don't let the "teen sex comedy" cover fool you. This is a dark comedy in the true sense of the word, packed with the kind of gallows humor that is made especially poignant when the subject is a high school kid. I was moved by One Last Thing, and it will leave you thinking - in my book, the definition of a film that has hit its mark.
Dig Deep.......2006-06-16
I can understand how at first glance the premise and trailer for this movie may be dismissed as a light hearted teen comedy. But to simply watch the trailer and move on would be a big mistake. This movie simply has much more depth than that. The film deals with death and relationships from a number of perspectives and the story nicely resolves like a well-crafted piece of music. The writing, casting and directing all combine to give well thought-out characters. The characters Dylan, Slap and Ricky realistically portray typical teenager's light-hearted views on life and keep the movie grounded. Cynthia Nixon gives an unselfish performance as a single mother juggling her sons disease and his quest for life. Sunny Mabrey plays the complex supermodel that is her own worst enemy. Ethan Hawke gives an excellent cameo as Dylan's father, a character that for me was central to the entire story. Some of the best characters are the bit parts, Caoti Mundi as the Bellhop in New York, Wyclef as the cab driver and especially Michael Rispoli brilliantly cast as the non-krishna spiritual advisor.
Oh, and speaking of well crafted music, the final song from Wyclef is the perfect finishing song that was obviously inspired from a beautiful script.
i've seen this four times.......2006-06-15
And it keeps getting better. I, too, thought the premise was an eye-roll. and the poster didn't help. but from the opening credits til the last, great closing credits song by wyclef jean, i found a sweet, smart, sad, and very funny movie. the writing is amazing. my teenage brothers were stunned, and thrilled, to find realistic teen dialogue and comraderie. and on top of that, they all admitted getting teary eyed, right along with me. as a mom, i was slayed by the scenes with cynthia nixon and michael angarano. there are so many lessons and wisdom to be heard here.cool, if you're into that. if, instead, you just want to watch a really entertaining movie with a great soundtrack and sublime acting, see "one last thing..."

Fun and entertaining........2007-01-17
The Hip Hop Kidz video movie has a good story and great music. Kids and teenagers will enjoy watching it, and their parents won't be bored either.
Recommended for anyone who likes to perform or ever dreamed of being a music or dance star.
Sweet Hip Hop, A new Genre has been invented...........2006-10-12
Wow I just watched this. You know, it was awsome hip hop dancing and the kids are amazing. The music is all original Hip Hop, written by the hip hop kidz to have clean lyrics but with a cool edgy vibe. The story is a little school-aged adventure about trying to come together to make a music video for a online music contest. They run in to obsticles along the way. All in all, it was a cool youthful fairytale mixed with hip hop style.
Great kids movie!!!!.......2006-10-07
Bright colors, catchy music, cute story, positive message! The making of video was almost as entertaining as the movie. If you have kids, buy this movie!!!

Fantastic! Entertaining........2007-06-02
My 20 month old niece just loves this DVD. I received a copy when she arrived on vacation from Virginia, plopped it into my computer and began to watch it. She stopped what she was doing, stood in front of the monitor and dances her little heart out. She had to watch it three times in a row!
Gets Toddlers Singing and Dancing.......2006-10-19
ThingamaKid Toons' series for kids aged two to five kicks off with Toddler Toons, Action Bible, and Christmas Toons, all of which come packaged with a DVD and CD. The DVD contains animated "toons" singing children's songs and provides a karaoke version of all the songs to help the kids sing along. The DVD also has three educational shorts and a Spanish option so kids can learn songs in another language.
The Toddler Toons shorts cover shapes, colors, and counting to ten. They last up to 30 seconds, so they don't lose the toddler's attention. The DVD plays great on a TV/DVD player, but doesn't auto-run when using it in a computer (not all parents know how to get a DVD going or have the right software to run it). The DVD run time is about 25 minutes. Included songs:
* Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
* The Butterfly Song
* The Wheels on the Bus
* Mary Had A Little Lamb
* Pop! Goes The Weasel!
* This Old Man
* The Bear Went Over the Mountain
* Eensy, Weensy Spider
* Old MacDonald
* Alphabet Animals (the A-B-C Song)
The CD comes with tunes for listening on the go or at home. It holds the same songs as those on the DVD, plus five extras including "The Muffin Man," "Roll Over," and "Baa, Baa Black Sheep." The CD also provides split track versions of the songs.
Our family toddler, a three-year-old, watched the DVD and asked for replays until told it was time to stop watching TV. He got up and danced and sang along when he knew the songs. It's sure to please toddlers who like music, singing, and dancing. Parents can help sing along as most of the songs are classic with a couple of unknowns for them to learn.
The box comes with song lyrics and the karaoke version displays lyrics as they're sung. More ThingamaKid titles are planned for 2007. The products seel for a great price considering they come with a CD and DVD plus karaoke and split track versions.
Get this DVD! Your kids will LOVE it!! .......2006-10-13
I had been looking for a sing along DVD that both of my kids would like and this far surpassed my expectations. My 1 year old was dancing the minute it started and when the first song ended my 4 year old was asking "what song is next"? They were glued to the TV from start to finish. What is nice about this DVD is that the kids see the story with the animation, as opposed to just watching kids sing. That way they get to know what the song is all about. Get this DVD and the others offered by Thingamakid. You won't be dissapointed!
