Amazon.com essential video
One of the most compelling tragic romances ever captured on film, Wuthering Heights is an exquisite tale of doomed love and miscalculated intentions. Though only half of Emily Bronte's classic tale of Heathcliff and Catherine was filmed by director William Wyler, it lacks for nothing.

The story begins when a Yorkshire gentleman farmer brings home a raggedy gypsy boy, Heathcliff, and raises him as his son. The boy grows to love his stepsister Catherine, with catastrophic results. Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon were perfectly cast as the mismatched lovers, with Olivier brooding and despairing, Oberon ethereal and enchanting. This won cinematographer Gregg Toland a much-deserved Oscar for his haunting and evocative depiction of mid-19th century English moors. (Quite a trick, as this was shot in California!) Though nominated for seven other Oscars, it won none of them, as it was released in 1939, one of the best years in Hollywood history and the same year as Gone with the Wind. Interestingly, the script was written by Charles MacArthur and Ben Hecht, best known for their witty 1931 flick, The Front Page. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Product Description

An abandoned orphan Gypsy boy Heathcliff (Rex Downing as child, Laurence Olivier as adult) is taken in by a well-to-do 19th century English family, the Earnshaws (Cecil Kellaway as the father) on the isolated moors. He becomes their stable boy and falls in love with the family's spoiled young daughter Catherine Earnshaw (Sarita Wooten as child), his childhood friend. The beautiful Cathy (Merle Oberon as adult) is desperately in love with Heathcliff, but because of his low birth begins seeing a wealthy neighbor's son. Heathcliff leaves during a misunderstanding and with driving ambition later returns moderately wealthy, discovering that she has married rich Edgar Linton (David Niven), in spite of her passionate love for him. In revenge, he spitefully marries Edgar's naive sister Isabella (Geraldine Fitzgerald) and then neglects her. The long-suppressed passionate feelings that they have had for each other continue to torment them as haunted, star-crossed lovers.

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie.......2007-06-30

I have seen many versions of this movie and in different languages too. But there is only one Heathcliff and he is Laurence Olivier. I do agree with many of the reviewers the Hollywood version of Wuthering Heights is different than Emily Brontë's novel. However its not necessarily a bad thing I love the movie, I love Heathcliff character in the movie. I highly recommend this movie for your classic movie library.

5 out of 5 stars sadly almost forgotten.......2007-04-17

im a 26 yr old dude...and i watched this the other day on TCM....and was astounded.....never has a film moved me emotionally as much as this.....maybe becuz i have experienced somewhat similar themes in my life such as loving someone whom u cannot have.........but the flawless acting...beautiful cinematography and breathtaking score complement emily bronte's classic novel so well...i have yet to read it but i will soon enough.....there has never been a movie like this one by any means..it's not your typical love story..it's quite dark...very sad and moving......almost agonizing to watch yet so beautiful you cant help but watch it.........why they wont release a special edition dvd is beyond me.....this is one of Hollywood's classic masterpieces.....if not for Gone With the Wind this movie probably would have brought home the oscar.....i cant imagine a single film-loving individual who lives without watching this film......get it somehow!

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking. Haunting. .......2007-03-19

I have to admit that I was somewhat apprehensive in watching the movie. I thought it would be dated and ...hmm, naive? Please forgive my ignorance.

Was I wrong! This is the most exquisite love story I have ever seen. Dark and haunting yet ethereal and dreamy. I havent read the book but oddly was inspired by Kate Bushs song, 'Wuthering Heights'.

It showcases the strength of love. Two people meant for eachother and noone else...and the torture of not living out their lifelong desire. Watching it is absolutely agonising.

This movie an absolute masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless..........2007-02-01

This is a classic masterpiece of (b/w) film-making that sadly isn't done anymore. Yes, it doesn't correspond word for word with the book, get over it, re-read the book. Still, the mood of the book is ever present and Laurence Olivier, Merle Oberon and David Niven are all wonderful in their roles. Regretably, Wyler and studio didn't tackle the entire book. This was released the year of Gone With the Wind and won only one academy award (for best B/W cinematography). It was nominated for 8 including Best Picture, and for flics released in 1939, that says a lot.

4 out of 5 stars Wyler Masterwork of Thwarted Yearning in the Yorkshire Moors.......2007-02-01

Brooding and tempestuous, William Wyler's 1939 version of Emily Brontë's only novel, "Wuthering Heights", is a masterwork of doomed love, conflicting passions, and unbridled revenge, all set in a romantic, haunted vision of the Yorkshire moors. Samuel Goldwyn considered this his favorite among his many productions, which included "The Best Years of Our Lives" and "Dodsworth". Legendary writers Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur (of "The Front Page" fame) adapted Bronte's book by streamlining it to the first two-thirds of the novel, a point that continues to rile up purists. But frankly, the story ends at exactly the right place in the movie.

Personally, I like it for the slightly over-the-top acting that propels the melodramatic plot and defines the aching beauty of the romance at its core. After years on the London stage and in British films, Laurence Olivier was finally introduced to Hollywood with his surly performance as Heathcliff, the stable boy locked in destructive thrall with a country squire's daughter, Cathy. Though he looks a little too cerebral and sounds a little too articulate for his role (I keep picturing a young Brando in the part), it's an impressive debut nonetheless, and his feral sullenness was put to good use again the following year in Alfred Hitchcock's "Rebecca". What Olivier does convey particularly well is the heroic tragedy of Heathcliff, as he renounces any power that denies his love with a turbulent, almost demonic sense of yearning.

A beautiful woman with hidden half-caste origins, Merle Oberon plays the capricious Cathy to the best of her limited capabilities. It's a full-bodied role for the right actress (ironically it would have been ideal for Olivier's then-fiancée and Scarlett-to-be, Vivien Leigh), and Oberon plays certain scenes quite well, especially those where she is not called on to speak. Unfortunately, she handles her death scene as if she was in a Cecil B. DeMille silent movie with hands aflutter, mouth aquiver and eyes widened to the point of looking palsied. The chemistry between Olivier and Oberon works though, as much of their dialogue is antagonistic apparently resembling their real-life relationship. But their one scene of open romantic euphoria is a beauty, when Cathy rips her formal gown off to join Heathcliff up on Peniston Crag, where she has him fill her arms with heather.

The supporting work is solid though not overly demanding of the excellent cast assembled. A young and pretty Geraldine Fitzgerald plays Isabella, Cathy's sister-in-law and Heathcliff's eventual wife, as the silly, determined romantic she is, and David Niven looks understandably puzzled most of the time as the put-upon Edgar Linton. Best of all is Flora Robson, who seems to breathe the part of the haunted, devoted housekeeper Ellen Dean. Evoking the right atmosphere is critical to this kind of piece, and a huge amount of the credit needs to go to master cinematographer Gregg Toland and art director James Basevi, both of whom capture the windswept bleakness of the novel. And Wyler again shows his innate skill in directing actors toward their best work, Oberon included.

Peter Kosminsky's 1992 adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights goes to the extreme of casting Sinéad O'Connor in a brief bit as Brontë herself, but the film still doesn't approach the accomplishment of William Wyler's classic 1939 production (with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon) or subsequent versions by Luis Buñuel and Robert Fuest. That doesn't make it unwatchable, however: it still offers The English Patient costars Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche as doomed lovers Heathcliff and Cathy. Binoche is a bit washed-out, but Fiennes makes a strong impression as the rejected laborer who makes his fortune and exacts a vengeance. Unlike Wyler's film, this one covers all the chapters of Brontë's book, but it is sodden with misery and lacks all grace. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good but not great.......2007-05-28

I enjoyed this film from beginning to end and recommend it. I'm not sure exactly why I didn't give it five stars. Perhaps because it failed to live up to my memory of the book, which I read many, many years ago and my memory of the Lawrence Olivier screen version. Both of those probably formed "my" Heathcliff, which was different from Ralph Fiennes'. "My Heathcliff" was stockier, more physical, craggier, (looking more like Beethovan!) Fiennes' is more mental and serpentine.

However all of that is personal and Fiennes' performance is certainly powerful and convincing. I felt a sympathy for him, too, even in his last, most monstrous days. The scene in which he grabs Cathy from the coffin is memorable.

I was a little disappointed in the performance of Juliette Binoche. There was something unconvincing in her Cathy. Another reviewer suggested that she lacked the necessary qualities to play an English country girl. I'm not sure exactly how to define those qualities but I tend to agree with that comment. Perhaps she was less firey than the original.

I agree with others, too, that the sequences were choppy and somewhat rushed, especially in the second half. But it's hard to fit all of the novel into two hours. I did like the ending a lot.

In sum, it's a great story, very well done and certainly worth watching.

3 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and brooding.......2007-05-27

Atmospheric version of classic. The movie is all about the interaction between the "players". Ralph Fiennes was excellent as the scheming villian.

3 out of 5 stars decent.......2007-05-06

how some people say this version surpasses the 1939 version is beyond me....id really say its 3 and 1/2 stars......the pacing is just too fast...it all happens too fast...they fit the entire novel into an hr and 46 mins....we barely have time to FEEL the love between cathy and heathcliff before she marries edgar ..heathcliff comes back..cathy dies....it just happens so fast before we can really connect to the lovers...Fiennes is brilliant and is what really keeps u interested in the film....Binoche is ok but to me pales in comparison depthwise to Merle Oberon....just watch the scene where Cathy discovers Heathcliff runs away...in the 1939 version it is pouring rain and u can actually FEEL the pain and longing to have Heathlciff back.....makes me cry everytime...but this one Binoche barely seems to shed a tear or show any emotion in what should be one of the most emotional scenes of the film.......and the other actors in the film dont compare to those in the original..........still the film is beautiful to watch..contains great scenery on the moors.....and a wonderful score as well..id love to have the soundtrack....it just isnt as moving as the original.......but worth watching for a great performance by Ralph Fiennes

3 out of 5 stars If you are going to tackle Bronte, do it right.......2007-04-30

Not to say that Ralph and Juliette are not fantastic actors in their own right, they are just not Cathy and Heathcliff. This production lacked so much of the novel's mood, that it just seemed esthetically boring. I personally would never hire that cinematographer again if I were the director/producer. I have YET to see a film version of Wuthering Heights that can do justice to Emily's art. I am not under some naive assumption that movies based on novels always turn out great (just look at Stephen King movies - BLECH!) - however we all thought that The Lord of the Rings could never be done properly, and then Peter Jackson came along to wow us all. It CAN be done with Wuthering Heights as well, and the great thing about it is, it would require no special effects. Just a great director, a better script adaption, and some actors who have chemistry - unlike the two in this one. They may be great, but again, they are no Heathcliff and Cathy. I really wish someone would get this right. Turn it into a miniseries ala Pride and Prejudice BBC style. Maybe they could get Clive Owen to play Heathcliff..... he would be a great one. Tall, dark, brooding, dangerously handsome. Perfect Heathcliff. Grrrrrrrrr.... ok enough of my Clive Owen fantasies.

Seriously though, it is the best adaptation so far, but not even close to being perfect. Filmmakers need to stop trying to turn this into a 90 minute theater picture and do it right with a BBC miniseries that has some meat to it, just like the novel. Look what they did with Jane Eyre! I really did not care much for the novel or anything else Charlotte tried to do, but they did a great job with that one. I actually loved it.

Someone.... PLEASE make Emily proud.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-04-08

It's a great pairing of actors, moody, gloomy, romantic, it's everything it should be.

Description

This brilliant adaptation of Emily Brontë's timeless tale breaks new ground by covering the complete story of a love so powerful that it reaches beyond the grave. Orla Brady (The Rector's Wife, Proof) stars as literature's most controversial heroine, the spirited, but tragic Cathy. Robert Cavanah (Cracker, Cadfael) plays Heathcliff, the dark stranger whose love for Cathy leads him to take terrible revenge on anyone who comes between them.

Nothing is known of Heathcliff's mysterious past when kindly Mr. Earnshaw adopts him into his family, but his daughter Cathy sees in him a soul very much like her own. They are divided by birth, class, and Cathy's jealous brother, but nothing can break the bond between them- not even when Cathy marries the wealthy gentleman Edgar Linton. Yet there are forces in nature that seem to be even more powerful than their love.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Characters way too old for their parts .......2007-06-19

The movie is ok. The movie's characters are way too old and not properly cast in the movie. Heathcliff and Cathy are young -- not near 40 ! Nelly is of their age - not an apparant 40-year old as shown in the movie! Joseph is written to be crass and you can imagine him an old, somewhat haggard man of poor speech - not a handsome, erect, well spoken servant. It was not well done at all. For passion and more believable characters, watch Timothy Dalton as Heathcliff and Anna Calder as Catherine. This movie detailed their lives from start to finish - not of the children's as continues in the book, but the passion was definitely there for the main characters.

3 out of 5 stars Wuthering Heights.......2007-05-14

It has been years since I seen a different version of Wuthering Heights, very good version but I forgot how disterbing this story is. Acting very good but I also bought this version because it was on Matthew Macfadyne credits he was only in about 10 minutes on film.

3 out of 5 stars Not even close.......2007-04-25

Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights is a tragic love story. Though this movie version reflects the story, it doesn't do the book justice. From reading the book many times, I was able to follow through and understood what was going on. But, there were so many times in the movie where I thought, that didn't happen, or that was premature. In the opening scene, Mr. Lockwood goes to Wuthering Heights and is let in by Heathcliff not by Hareton as the movie portrays. Nelly is a young servent who grew up with Cathy and Heathcliff, not already an older woman upon Heathcliff's arrival. In the movie, Cathy and Heathcliff are running through the moors and Cathy asks him where he came from and as the scene progresses, they are mature young adults and she's still asking where he came from. In the book however, it is Nelly who makes up his past to try to cheer him up from his depression. Hareton is kept as a hired hand in Wuthering Heights but in the movie, Heathcliff treats him like a companion. Sure, I found the movie to be good but couldn't help gasping at such major changes. I guess I have to wait patiently for Hollywood to make this movie in true book form!

2 out of 5 stars "Whatever Our Souls Are Made Of, His And Mine Are The Same" ~ Love And Necromancy Make Strange Bedfellows.......2007-02-04

First things first, I hate to admit it but I've never read Emily Bronte's classic novel `Wuthering Heights', therefore I can't comment on whether or not this cinematic production from '98 is an accurate retelling of the tragic love story of Heathcliff and Cathy.

Secondly, I don't see any reason to give a synopsis of the plot since the majority of people reading this review are already quite familiar with the storyline.

That now said, I will say that this is one of the most bizarre, depressing and unromantic love stories I've ever seen. The two love birds, Heathcliff (Robert Cavanah) and Cathy (Orla Brady) are myopic, narcissistic, manipulative, cruel and overall downright unlikable. What can you conclude about a guy whose only comment after his true loves death is, "Did she mention me?"

Final Thoughts: Beautiful cinematography, wonderful production values and attractive period costumes can't compensate for two main characters you just can't force yourself to care about. Maybe this is your cup of tea, but it's not mine.

5 out of 5 stars opposite stories of love.......2007-01-29

This is the best version of Wuthering Heights I have seen. The acting superb by Robert Cavanah and Matthew Mcfadyen was great to behold. The dark, all consuming love Heathcliff had for Cathy and the gentle, protecting love Hareton had for the daughter Catherine is such a contrast. It made the story more strong in the obsession of Cathy's and Heathcliff's dark romance standout. Watching this story unfold tore at your heartstrings in how they treated the people around them. They were so involved with each other, they just damaged and run over the people they were supposed to also love. Just did not have any room in their hearts for others I think. It almost wore me out I got so involved in the story. Get this version, you will not be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars This is the one to own .......2007-06-19

I first saw this movie back in the 70's and fell in love with the movie - way before I read the book. After reading the book, I realized they left so much out, so I've watched the other 3 movies I know of to see if they better matched the book (Olivier, Fiennes and that BBC Theatre version). After just an hour of the latter (it was poorly done and badly cast), I realized that there could be no better actor than Timothy Dalton as Heathcliff. Perfectly portrayed as the dark, tall, handsome gypsy - tower of physical strength - which is important in the story. He and Anna Calder as Catherine are excelent in this movie. Such passion and fire are evident and spill out of their souls in their acting - the movie may not follow the books' story to point, but it's the best one yet. I sobbed with such emotion in watching this movie... I felt every tormented word and malicious act portrayed by each character -- I definitely recommend it if you're a WH fan !

1 out of 5 stars Typical Hollywood treatment.......2007-06-12

Did not follow the book. Timothy Dalton was a 'slap em around, throw em down' kind of lover. The BBC productions are much more refined.

5 out of 5 stars Best Heathcliff ever - he will rock your world!.......2006-08-26

I searched for this movie for years before it was finally released on video. I have two copies in VHS and now finally a DVD that hopefully will survive time! I think this version fills in the blanks that Emily Bronte couldn't write about in her time, but it also has some elements directly from the book that are missing from other Wuthering Heights versions. Watch this movie! You will fall in love like never before.

4 out of 5 stars Whatever Souls Are Made Of, His And Mine Are The Same.......2006-03-14

Having seen this movie some years ago on video, I'm very excited that it is available on DVD. While Sir Laurence Olivier and Ralph Fiennes have both done respectable turns as Heathcliff, Timothy Dalton is just glorious!! He embodies the character's passion, ambivalence and consuming torment and longing for Cathy splendidly. Anna Calder-Marshall, while perhaps not one would think would make an ideal Cathy, is wonderful as the Yorkshire lass. Oh, how these two sizzle! Whenever Dalton speaks, or broods, the room temperature just seemed to skyrocket! The ill-fated lovers find themselves separated and bound by circumstance and other people, leading to tragic results.

Sure, the consummation of their relationship did not occur in the book, but with young hot actors like Timothy and Anna, how could the filmmakers not succumb to temptation? The locations (complete with windswept wild moors) and music are intoxicatingly gorgeous as well. I don't know how Emily Bronte would feel about this adaptation, but I'd like to think that this production would have done her proud.

Make sure you've got a fan going, as well as ice cold drinks, because the heat will go way up!

3 out of 5 stars Kept To Plot--But, Disappointing Ending.......2006-01-15

For Timothy Dalton's performance alone, I should have given this movie 5 stars. Dalton's devilish dark good looks, and the way he brought out Heathcliff's passion, rage, and fury, rendered him the best Heathcliff I have ever seen portrayed on screen. You could see the evil in him and the VIOLENCE frightens you. The movie's music and scenery gives one a taste of life in the English moors. And, I was impressed with watching details from the book. But, the movie lacked real passion and drama, and overall emotion and feeling that the 1992 version exuded. Too, since this movie did not keep to the original plot, like the 1939 and the 1992 versions,--And ended with Heathcliff being shot (What? Heathcliff was never SHOT in the book!) I have to say that I did not thoroughly enjoy this movie.

With MTV and Emily Bronte in the credits of this television movie, one's expectations are automatically set at a realistic level. This is a teen-angst version of Bronte's star-crossed novel, with lots of cute young people and heavy breathing. Luscious Erika Christensen plays Cathy, who grows up alongside the rough, passionate Heath (Mike Vogel), a lost boy who wants only to play his kind of rock & roll. The fates, of course, will not allow their true love to blossom, although they allow quite a few of his songs to get on the soundtrack. Some genuinely spectacular seaside locations (in Puerto Rico) form the backdrop for the creaking dialogue and Jim Steinman's typically melodramatic music. It's pretty grisly unless you're 14 years old and cherish "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Cultural note: Aimee Osbourne, the Ozzy daughter who opted out of the Osbournes series, takes a small role. --Robert Horton

At first I just wanted to see this movie because Mike Vogel is in it. And he is sexy. But I really enjoyed the movie overall-some scenes are cheesy. But what can you do? MTV made the film so it's a pretty decent watch.

1 out of 5 stars Emily Bronte rolling in her grave D: <.......2006-09-12

Murder was commited here by MTV and the victim's name is classic English Literature.

This is by far the WORST insult that MTV could have given to a respectable writer like Emily Bronte and they have the audacity to call it "an MTV original". All they did was butcher her only literary masterpiece into an abominable high school drama for kids to enjoy. If Emily Bronte were to raise from her grave today to see how badly MTV butchered her only masterpiece, she would have fallen back into it, but not before she had the chance to murder the crew at MTV for such a blasphemy.

Don't waste your time and money by buying this garbage if you are a fan of the original novel by Bronte. It'll only serve to make your eyes bleed and I honestly don't understand how people can give this movie five stars when the characters and story were so horridly portrayed and completely stripped of their essence. If anything, I would recommend the Lawrence Olivier version or the 1992 version with Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes. Those versions atleast manage to stay true to the real essence of the story and its characters.

Words alone cannot even begin to describe how badly my heart ached to see the work of my one my favourite writers of all time get displayed with such vile mediocrity.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorites.......2006-07-25

I saw this movie on mtv the first time they ran it. I waited for months and months. Immediatly after I saw it I wanted to see it again. It's that good.
I finally found it for 2 dollars at iggle video.
I'm sure you all know this is a modern twist on Wuthering Heights. It's not exactly like the book. But it is a wonderful love story and it will make you cry. From some of the reviews I'm wondering if anyone even saw the same movie I did or if they saw that it said MTV so they decided to rate it bad.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING: Classic Love Romance in MTV Style (and It's from MTV ... Lots of Songs with Shallow Story).......2006-01-27

This is an MTV original movie which takes a daring step - modernized `Wuthering Heights' in MTV style. Modernizing classics can be tricky, and not everyone is happy with DiCaprio's `Romeo and Juliet' of which success must be the reason for the production of this `Wuthering Heights.' Still, I think it is not impossible to make a decent film out of Emily Bronte classic in modern situation. You don't have to be perfectly faithful to the book because it is practically impossible (Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes version tries it but didn't work).

So I bought the video and watched it. My impression is ... Can you give me a refund please? I don't mind if they changed the names. Heathcliff is Heath and Catherine is Cate. "Wuthering Heights" becomes `Heights' the lighthouse by the beautiful seaside. And, see, Heath, formerly an orphan raised by kind Mr. Earnshaw, is so cool a guy that he grows up to be a rock-star. This sounds pretty incredible, but I have to believe this story because Heath is a "musically talented homeless youth," according to the descriptions on the back cover of the VHS. But what is really incredible is not that part.

[LIFELESS CHARACTERS AND DIALOGUES] `I love you' - melodramatic music starts -- `I love you' - music continues: fade out - `No, I wanna go. I hate you!' `You belong with me!' `Let go of me!' `Wait!' `Let go of ME!" -- The story goes on and on like this. There is no chemistry between Heath and Cate, and rich boy Edward is peeping at them through a telescope from his mansion. Cate's brother Hendrix is reduced to awful stereotype of punk rock musician who can smashes a guitar in pieces. As to musical instruments, Edward can be as wild as Hendrix for he can throws a violin-cello into the ocean if he likes. Oh, and the conclusion of the film is pretty weird.

Erika Christensen (`Swinfan'), Mike Vogel (`The Texas Chainsaw Massacre'), Chris Masterson (`Malcolm in the Middle'), Johnny Whitworth (`Empire Records') and Katherine Heigl (`Roswell') appear, but none of them is allowed to show what they can do. There is no chance form the cast from the beginning when the story is so thin, and the romance is so shallow. John Doe and Aimee Osbourne also appear briefly, but can do nothing to save the film from the mess.

Don't waist your precious time of your life as I did, watching this terrible adaptation.

Product Description

Made two years after Citizen Kane, this 1943 version of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre sure looks like star Orson Welles muscled his way behind the camera much of the time. (In fact, costar Joan Fontaine--who plays the title character--has maintained that Welles methodically did just that every day on the set.) Not that the film's official director was a hack: Robert Stevenson, who later had a busy career at Disney making numerous live-action hits for the studio, such as Mary Poppins, gets the credit. But there's no mistaking Welles's masterful hand in the film's bold and creative look, and there's no getting away from his enigmatic charisma as Rochester, the widower who takes in Jane as a governess to his daughter. An engrossing, gorgeous film, there's even a small role for Elizabeth Taylor at the beginning as Jane's unlucky, doomed friend at a cruel boarding school. -------------- Import Version

5 out of 5 stars Orson Wells Version soars.......2006-10-06

Orson is the perfect Mr Edward Rochester, and Jane, while some say that Joan Fontaine was far too pretty for the role of Jane, She captured Jane's quiet strong spirit and aced the role. The Gothic moodiness of the moores and Thornfield is perfect. Complete with mist and contrast of dark and light. I delight in this film.
My only thought of improvement would be if it could have been longer and not rushed along so much. Though this version may not exactly follow the book, the mood and feeling are there. It is full of heart
A must see!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best version of Jane Eyre!.......2006-08-20

This in my mind is the definitive version of which i noe tend to mark all other version by and they don't come close. With an exellent Joan Fontanine and as a previous reviewer said a Beefy and sexy Orson Welles, with a fine supporting cast.

5 out of 5 stars Best Film Version of Jane Eyre.......2006-07-25

I've been having a "Jane Eyre-athon." There are many good versions of this gothic story of the fight between worldliness and virtue. Many have one really outstanding element, but this version, with Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine remains overall the best. Like most, it eliminates much of the second half of the book, which is the really important part for Bronte, who is one of the finest religious thinkers of her age. There are so many bests in this version, it will always be hard to top for getting Bronte right.

This version was shot when black and white filmmaking was at it's best, and Fox was known as the best at noir/gothic, with velvety blacks, and really crisp lighting and shading. One thing that helps this film be better is that it has the best script (by Huxley, Stevenson and Houseman). The script transitions well, and really captures the major emotional elements of the story. This version also has the best child Jane (Peggy Ann Gardner). I agree with many that Zelah Clarke (Jane in the 1983 miniseries) is probably the definitive adult Jane, but Joan Fontaine is equally fine, and many people will simply not sit through the slow miniseries. Joan Fontaine has a real sense of refined restraint that seems very natural, and her strength is not so much in knowing she is strong, but overcoming her weakness. That is a very important mental/emotional component for getting Jane right.

Orson Welles is beefy and sexy, and plays every note of Rochester perfectly. If he is a bit too young for the role, that is the only flaw. While I feel that Cairin Hinds (the 1997 film version) is the best Rochester, Welles performance equals him. Once again, the striking dark haired beauty Blanche was cast with a platinum blonde, she is undeniably and great and striking beauty, and is the best of the Blanche - easy to see why men like her, and why women don't. Little Margaret O'Brien, who I usually find cloying and hammy is, of course, the perfect Adele, so we have the best Adele, too! She is absolutely convincingly the daughter of a diva, a dancer and coquette, and her "look at me" peskiness is just right for Adele.

The supporting roles, just simply nail the characters as described in the book, Broklehurst, Agnes Morehead as the Aunt, Mrs. Fairfax, and young Elizabeth Taylor as young Jane's friend all add up to make this a masterpiece. Having Bernard Herrmann do the score doesn't hurt a bit, either. (Film buffs will find it of interest that some of the exact themes and sound cues used in this film were also used again in Hitchcock's NORTH BY NORTHWEST.)

See the 1934 version for a laugh and film history. See the 1983 miniseries to see the truest rhendition of the book. See the 1997 version for breathtaking color, scenery and Cirian Hinds' Rochester. See this to be fully satisfied. This is simply an exquisite film - filmmaking at its best in every respect; and while not as letter-perfectly definitive as the 1983 miniseries, I feel it is overall the best, truest version of JANE EYRE.

4 out of 5 stars Particularly Good First Half.......2006-04-06

If you enjoyed Franco Zeffirelli's 1996 version, you should check out this 1943 version of Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre". The two adaptations are almost identical, both chose to front- weight the story, placing considerable emphasis on Jane's childhood and condensing the Gothic romance at the end. Although this makes the ending a bit rushed, it insures that the Bronte's theme is given sufficient consideration.

While the story is generally thought of as a Gothic romance, it is really a tale about how people can make a difference. Jane's childhood was quite horrible and should have permanently warped her, as it would anyone suffering similar abuse and the absence of love. But Bronte wanted to show the positive impact a single individual can have on someone at a formative time. Enter Helen (Elizabeth Taylor) as Jane's (Peggy Ann Garner) salvation, allowing her to have much the same impact later with Adele (Margaret O'Brien).

Director Robert Stevenson was content with the agreement letting the overbearing Orson Welles (two years after "Citizen Kane") direct his own character (Edward Rochester) in the later scenes with costar Joan Fontaine, Stevenson's real interest was in directing children. Which is probably why Garner, O'Brien and Taylor have such a prominent part in the film.

Garner turns in the best performance of the three girls but you have to marvel at six year-old O'Brien's credible French accent.

Welles liked Stevenson and had a good time on the set except when O'Brien was present. O'Brien was thrilled when she first put on Adele's ruffled white gown, and the cast and crew were amused because she could not keep from glancing at herself in the mirror. But Orsen was not pleased and snidely told his secretary that the kid was nothing but a "little scene stealer".

Welles received $100,000 for playing Rochester, about the same amount he got for acting, directing, producing, and partially writing "Kane".

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

2 out of 5 stars I just saw this today.......2006-02-23

Like I mentioned, I just saw this version. I have read the book many times and love the book. First thing, this version does not follow the bood very closely. Too many things were left out. There was not very much emotion portrayed in this version. There was much of it in the book and other versions I have seen. Jane was too pretty in the the movie. I couldn't imagine Jane being that pretty in the book. It tells me in the book that she was plain. Everything was sickly sweet and glossed over.

5 out of 5 stars More than a love story...........2007-05-19

Few films explore the depths of dysfunction quite like the 1939 version of "Wuthering Heights." It is perhaps one of the greatest love stories ever captured on film, great because it is more than just a love story; it is a portrait of the long term results of alcoholism and child abuse. Based, of course, upon the novel of the same name, the film stops after the first few chapters. The book, however, goes on to show with immense psychological detail how the abused Heathcliff himself becomes an abuser and replicates, to the best of his ability, the circumstances in which he was mistreated. The film captures in a short but intense manner the brilliance of the original story-telling.

In spite of the all the melodrama, the 1939 "Wuthering Heights" is a subtle film compared to the remakes. There are no sex or rape scenes, little bloodshed, just phenomenal acting and a stirring score. When Hindley places his muddy boot on Heathcliff's hands, one feels the humiliation, the degradation. And no R-rated love scene can compare to the passion with which Catherine rips off her fine frock so she can don her usual shabby attire and dash off to join Heathcliff on the moors.

The obsessive love between Catherine and Heathcliff is the result of the bonding which occurred when they were children in a brutal situation, with no one but each other to turn to for help. Although Catherine loves Heathcliff, her desperation to escape from her alcoholic brother dominates all other emotions. She marries wealthy Edgar for material security and seems to be happy, until Heathcliff comes back. The division in her soul destroys her; in the book she dies giving birth, so tormented that not even the love for her child gives her any peace or hope.

Throughout both the book and the movie are the recurring mentions of the devil, of hell, of witchcraft and curses, so that one has the distinct impression that the religion of the characters in more Manichean than Christian. The evil spirals into consuming jealousy and hatred. No sins of the flesh are committed, that anyone is aware of, although suppressed passion simmers in every chapter. The tempestuous climate of the moors reflects the inner tumults. The core of the evil is not in the wildness of the elements but in the addictive behaviors of the Earnshaw family. Heathcliff is as addicted to his anger and hatred for all who have injured him as much as Hindley is addicted to his drink, and his inability to forgive, more than his thwarted love for Catherine, is what destroys most of the main characters. The film provides a searing study of the evil that is unleashed when people cling to the past. It also shows, in the final ethereal shot, how love can transcend time and space.

    5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2006-02-07

So far this is the only movie adaptation of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights that I've ever seen and I absolutely loved it! I love old black and white movies and this is one of my faves and I think the black and white really fits the moody, edgy plot and characters!

1 out of 5 stars Way Over Rated !!.......2005-10-22

"Wuthering Heights" is very possibly my favorite book and this ,by far the WORST filming that I've seen of it! They all speak in artificial and sonorous tones. Making dramatic pronoucements sometimes accompanied by rumbles of thunder like a bad horror movie! I never thought Merle Oberon, regardless of how pretty she was, could act and Olivier is too subdued and displays NONE of the passion described in Bronte's novel. Example: the "May you not rest until I am dead too!" Which is spoken as he bashes his head against a tree trunk, is delivered in a dreamy, removed and subdued manner with no head banging involved. Timothy Dalton and Ralph Fiennes ECLIPSE Olivier's pallid performance!

    4 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2005-09-30

This is a must for old film buffs. Though the passing years have rendered it a bit melodramatic for modern tastes, the performances still crackle with electricity, with a very young David Niven turning in a spot on version of Linton.
