Contemporary comedies rarely stretch themselves beyond a bickering romantic couple or a bickering couple and a bucket of bodily fluids, which makes the ambition and intelligence of Good bye, Lenin! not simply entertaining but downright refreshing. The movie starts in East Germany before the fall of communism; our hero, Alex (Daniel Bruhl), describes how his mother (Katrin Sass), a true believer in the communist cause, has a heart attack when she sees him being clubbed by police at a protest. She falls into a coma for eight months--during which the Berlin Wall comes down. When she awakens, her fragile health must avoid any shocks, so Alex creates an illusive reality around his bedridden mother to convince her that communism is still alive. Good bye, Lenin! delicately balances wry satire with its rich investment in the lives of Alex, his mother, and other characters around them. Funny, moving, and highly recommended. --Bret Fetzer

The beginning of the end.......2007-06-19
Before the Berlin Wall fell, East Germany is ruled by Communist Russia and its citizens were forced to live a lie- a society that is supposed to be based on equality and social justice. Alex Kernel (played by the amazing Daniel Brühl) is a young disillusioned young man who, together with his fellow East Germans, are on the verge of a revolution and social change.
While walking together with fellow rallyist, Alex was arrested and his mother, who witnessed the scene, suffered a heart attack. While his mother survived, it left her in a coma and for 8 months, Alex and his older sister Ariane took care of her. As East Germany became no more and the reunification of his homeland was completed, his mother woke up. What follows is a hilarious, amusing and at times serious and thought-provoking attempt to shield his mother from the sweeping changes and their altered life as citizens of the newly unified Germany.
Director Wolfgang Becker spared no expense to capture a time and place that now exist only in old, yellowed newspapers and history books. The finished product, a film that is not only a realistic social commentary but also a love story between a son and a mother, and the journey a young restless soul need to travel to discover himself.
Good Bye, Lenin!.......2007-05-29
Funny and heart-warming story about a family during the time of the collapse of the Berlin wall. For the whole family.
High Grade Art. .......2007-05-21
I first heard about this movie a week ago after reading an article in which a commentator described it as being a bit of "communist chic." This intrigued me so I had to check it out. Well, I'm happy to report that the fellow's opinion was nonsense. It's no more accurate a perception than one that misconstrued The Beatles "Back in the USSR" as an ode to the Soviet Union. This is not a propagandistic story in the least. It's a beautiful film about love, family, and truth. Basically, the central question concerns whether or not we should lie to loved ones if we think the lie will ultimately benefit them. The answer is not easy for the main characters or the audience. Goodbye, Lenin! provides us with ambiguity after ambiguity and is rife with the same nuance that fills our own lives. I saw nothing offensive about this film; indeed, it is a valuable work of art.
A world of change.......2007-05-17
This movie represents in a very interesting way the changes that drive our world and our families. The molding of reality to fit certain likings is a very appropiate evocation of history. A very funny and tragic movie!
Neat Movie.......2007-05-12
This movie gave a lot of insight to the way that the East Germans were feeling that crazy time before the wall came down. For a few different generations.

Though it wasn't Jackie Chan's first film, Drunken Master is the film that cemented his stardom. Jackie plays the rebellious son of a kung fu master. To teach Jackie the value of discipline, his father apprentices him to another master named So Hi, who has a unique "drunken" fighting style. Jackie chafes at So Hi's rigorous exercises and runs away--only to be brutally humiliated at the hands of a hired killer named Thunderleg. Chastened, Jackie becomes So Hi's devoted student. He soon discovers he will need everything he's learned when Thunderleg is hired to kill his father. In Drunken Master, Jackie is only beginning to cultivate his mixture of action and comedy; here the emphasis is on kung fu acrobatics. But the kung fu is astounding. The final fight is dizzying and amazingly choreographed by director Yuen Woo-ping (now famous as the fight choreographer for The Matrix). --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Excellent purchase.......2007-07-03
arrived in a month, which is normal for me. And the dvd was in excellent conditions.
One of my favorite Kung-Fu Movies.......2007-04-12
If you are looking for an old school 80's style Kung-Fu movie with great choreography, a variety of styles (crane, snake, tiger claw, etc), and the English dubbing with Chinese mouth movements (sometimes continuing after an English sentence is completed), then this is the movie for you. The only thing missing is the high flying acrobatics such as jumping on the roof of a house. In addition to the above, the movie includes the amazing stunts and use of remote items (chairs stunts, buckets, brooms, etc.) that are common among Jackie Chan films. Drunken Master is a great movie that shows Jackie Chan's skills as a marital artist and the breadth of styles he is familiar with. Bravo!
I know you have to take the dialog and acting.............2007-02-05
.....with a grain of salt but, except for the amazing final fight scene and the hilarious Drunken Master himself, this movie was un-funny and almost unwatchable at times. Too bad, because we loved Chan's second Drunken Master movie but this one left us very disappointed.
An Amazing Chan Adventure.......2006-11-10
This was truly a classic martial arts film. It combined the prowess and acting ability of Jackie Chan with the excellent direction and choreography of Yuen Wo Ping. If you've seen "The Legend of Drunken Master", that's only the second half of the story. I strongly suggest you see how it all starts with this movie.
Jackie at his best.......2006-11-01
This is probably my favorite Jackie Chan film of all time. Disregard the recycled story line and focus on his amazing athletic ability and the expertly choreagraphed fight sequences - this is what made Jackie great. The one trait I most admired about him was his very clever use of props during these scenes. He would take a seemingly ordinary object and use it to his advantage during a fight. But also in less violent moments as well...a lighthearted chopstick duel over a piece of chicken. Excellent. In this age of blue-screen and CG, I am so glad we have these early films when everything was done right then and there on the set. Film making at it's best.

I selected 5 stars because it is the best for the movie. I watched the movie. It was a good movie. I loved it.
The title is the opposite 5/5 stars.......2006-12-20
This was a really good and creepy movie for people who like movies with a creepy child who likes to murder his family mostly thats not for me but I liked this movie it was really good but kind of short. If you loved macaulay culkin in home alone then see this movie where he lurks as the son of satan who tries to murder his sister and his mom really creepy movie.
THE GOOD SON ROCKS.......2006-10-26
when i saw this movie i was just like "this is Mcauley's best work".my favorite part was the bridge scene.the end sucks though(in my moms thought).but i personally liked the ending.i could watch this movie 5 times in a row, just like i give it 5 stars.
Macaulay Culkin and Elijah Wood a great combination.......2006-08-14
In this scary movie. Mark's mum dies when he is about 10 years old and he goes to stay with his uncle, aunt and cousins for a fortnight while his dad goes on a business trip. He is also under psychiatric treatment because of the trauma of his mother's death. Mark innocently gets involved in Henry's evil plans to kill and maim for fun!! Henry gives the impression of being a little angel to his parents and uncle and only shows his darker side to Mark. He even tries to convince everyone that his evil ideas have come from Mark because of the traumatic loss of his mum. Mark fails to convince his father, his uncle, his aunt or his psychiatrist of the evil doings of Henry right up to the end of the film. I won't spoil it for you by telling you the outcome. A very enjoyable film that had me on the edge of my seat almost all through.
Macaulay Culkin vs. Elijah Wood in this thriller.......2006-08-11
Very surprising performance from two young actors. the movie's about a boy named Mark (Elijah Wood) whose mother just died so his father (David Morse) leaves him with his aunt and uncle. So Mark befriends his cousin Henry(Macaulay Culkin). At first they become inseperable but later on Mark finds out that Henry doesn't care about the lives of other people. that's when the two become more seperable. Henry even tried to kill his little sister connie (Quinn Culkin Macaulay's actual sister). Henry took her to a skating rank where he was gonna throw her in the thick ice. Mark followed him to save connie but he didn't have any skates and he sipped which made him go slower. Then Henry threw her to the ice and the ice cracked and she fell right through he didn't save her then the lake froze and she was still in there. This is what I think about this film some kids can be worst than adults.

This movie was cute all around? I like Jr, and the elf Stan, I lile Jr sleigh!Jr has lost his faith in Xmas.
Jr is cute too!
Watch it for the elf!!.......2006-11-14
I won't bore you with another telling of the story, but will just tell you that the entire movie is worth watching just for Ed Gale as Stan the elf. He did a fantastic job of playing a role that is usually kind of hard to make noticeable. There are so many elves in so many Christmas movies that you start to feel you've seen it all. The movie is well worth watching and I'll watch again just to see "Stan."
An Original Charmer..........2005-12-02
"Santa Jr." Is A Wonderfully Funny & Warm Family Christmas Film, The Cast Is Terrific...Especially Nick Stabile As The Title Character!! George Wallace Is Also Beyond Words Funny!! I Have Enjoyed This Tale For A Few Years And Will For Years To Come!!
Very Good Family Movie For The Holidays.......2004-12-25
This is a great movie to watch with the kids!
Cute Little Movie For The "New" Type Of Christmas.......2003-12-23
I only discovered this delightful little Christmas movie from 2002 a few weeks ago and I was very pleased with this "modern", Christmas story so very different from the great classics normally associated with the festive season. "Santa Jr.", from it's enchanting title, to its lovable performances and sentimental writing is sure to delight viewers and while it is no outstanding tour de force it is a film that is just right for this time of year where finally we get to find out more about the family of Santa Claus!
It seems that good old Santa has been sending out apprentices for a few years now to make sure the presents are all delivered on time in different parts of the world. "Santa Jr." tells the story of , you guessed it his son who is called surprise "Chris" (Nick Stabile) and who's full name is Chris Kringle which as this story progresses manages to get him into all sorts of trouble. Chris is the ultimate reluctant son who doesn't really want to follow in dad's illustrious footsteps but who has nevertheless been assigned the "West Coast Route". The story takes place in San Diego where Chris arrives to start his present drop a bit ahead of time just as the city is the victim of a thief robbing homes who's trademark is to carry out his housebreaking dressed in a Santa costume. Chris is accidently arrested while trying to deliver gifts and placed on trial despite the fact that the house robberies continue while Chris is in custody. No one believes who he actually is and when a decision on his fate can't be arrived at he is placed in the custody of his lawyer Susan over the holiday period. Once moved in and fitted with an alarm to stop him leaving the house Chris begins to make the best of his situation while frantically trying to phone home to the North Pole to speak with Dad only to get a recorded message stating that there will be a 45 minute delay as this is Santa's busiest time of the year. While in captivity however Chris begins to see and appreciate the great work that his father has done for years and gradually he gets the point of what Christmas should be about. After a series of "miracles", occur such as a bottomless bag of toys for the local children appears he also manages to restore Susan's belief in people and the holiday season for the first time since her parents death. After a number of very amusing incidents Chris manages to catch the Santa Bandit and also manages to get Susan together with Policeman Darryl who is responsible for keeping an eye on Chris while he is in captivity. Only at this happy resolution does Chris become eager to return to his future role at the North Pole and trades in a standard sleigh for a flashy Red Sports Car to do at least part of the trip in!
"Santa Jr.", does make delightful simple viewing in the holiday season. Nick Stabile makes a wonderful Chris and his performance is full of charm and humour that makes Santa Jr a very appealing character. His scenes of swapping "traditional Christmas practices", for "modern tecnology" such as a "modified" Santa suit more acclimatised for the warm San Diego Christmas and a "meter reader" that can tell if people have been "naughty or nice" this year are most amusing and he is the actor that really makes this film so enjoyable. Lauren Holly as Susan displays a wonderful sense of bemusement as the story progresses and she is just right as the serious lawyer who learns to love and feel again thanks to Chris's intervention in her life. Judd Nelson normally associated with much heavier entertainment as a rule has the largely colourless role of Susan's love interest here and at that level he manages well. George Wallace as Darryl's cake eating, Christmas decoration loving assistant steals every scene he is in with a very funny performance and his scenes of helping Chris decorate Susan's home for Christmas are wonderful in their humour and comic delivery.
"Santa Jr.", might be considered by some to be lightweight holiday fare however it has a nice little message to convey without being to demanding on the brain cells. I'm glad I discovered this little Hallmark Christmas Movie and I hope to enjoy it in coming seasons as well. Nick Stabile is the real reason for enjoying this movie and his fresh and breezy delivery make it an enjoyable hour and a half. Let Santa Jr. entertain you this Christmas so that "Dad" can take a bit of a break for a change in the 2002 television movie "Santa Jr.".

Not Exactly As Good As The Book.......2006-05-16
This film gets 2 stars for good production only. Fans of the book will be grossly disappointed. Anthony Hopkins was grossly mis-cast. It stays too far from the book in order to be an "acceptable" movie and too much is lost and twisted in the conversion. Frankly, I'd think McEwan would have enough money that he wouldn't need to sell out this way.
The characters have no chemistry with one another.
The ending is ambiguous.
For all the "movie" magic weaved in, it lacks drama.
A mere phantom of the book. Skip it.
A Flawed but Intense Film of Espionage, Intrigue and History.......2004-08-23
THE INNOCENT is a little known movie released in 1995 and only just now available on DVD. For those who are fans of novelist Ian McEwan stories (The Atonement, Amsterdam, Enduring Love, The Comfort of Strangers, The Child in Time, etc) then this foray into screenwriting based on his own 1989 novel by the same name will be of great interest. Based on a true bit of history, the story takes place in 1954 when the British and Americans were carrying on a clandestine partnership in digging a tunnel beneath the Berlin Wall to gain access to the buried telephone lines that provided wire tapping of Russian communications. The CIA agent in charge of the American division is Bob (played by a very oddly cast Anthony Hopkins) who receives the genteel and innocent 25-year-old British soldier Leonard (Campbell Scott) as a technician to direct the wire-taping mission. Leonard is the true 'guileless fool', a wide eyed virgin on his first undercover military mission and eventually his first affair with an older German woman Maria (Isabella Rossellini), a woman with a dubious past, who eventually involves him in the murder of her husband Otto (Ronald Nitschke) and his rather Grand Guignol disposal. Now completely trapped by the circumstances of the Cold War and his inadvertent entry into espionage, Leonard is forced to escape to England in a way that involves Maria and Bob and the fact that the Russians discover the intrigue. The film ends with a return of Leonard to the Berlin of 1989 when the Berlin Wall come down: the intervening 25 years have taken their toll on all concerned.
The film is very well directed by John Schlesinger and while Campbell and Rossellini are excellent, Hopkins as a brash American CIA agent seems oddly miscast. He is a fine actor and is able to bring off his multifaceted role well, but just seems uncomfortable and makes us feel that. A movie well worth your attention, especially if you happen to love Ian McEwan's elegant way with words and story line.

BRING BACK THE GOOD OLD DAYS.......2007-01-09
I bought this film because I missed the good old days when I was athletic and young. I fenced as a kid and was always happily surprised when a new SwashBuckler (SB) came out. In this typical "B" film the old Louis Hayward sword and cloak genre, of many Monte Cristo and other SB's, Monte Cristo saves a nation from evil in the usual manner, by the clanging of sharp steel and innocent and childlike planning, which strategies would not win a checkers game, let alone a game of life and death chess. But in the end, the fun of watching a film from one's days of innocence, trumps it's lack of intellectual stimulation. If you are in a nostalgic mood, or buying for a boy under age 10, you can't go wrong here, despite the black and white film. I give it 3.5 stars, the last star and a half for nostalgic reasons
A wonderful piece of nostalgia.......2006-11-05
This brings back many wonderful memories of Saturday nights at the pictures. (movies to our American friends) Louis Hayward swashbuckles his way through a ruritanian tale of treachery and betrayal whilst George Sanders presents a truly menacing adversary. In black and white and no doubt tame by the present day offerings of violence and bad language, nevertheless people of my generation would enjoy this.
An Old Fashioned Swashbuckler, And Not Bad.......2005-10-04
"Menaced by more powerful nations, the country of Lichtenburg - tiny but proud - is known as the Jewel of the Balkans. Steeped in the ancient tradition of romance and chivalry, her people hold unswerving loyalty to the throne - on which now sits the young Grand Duchess Zona, who rules under the sinister shadow of one man - General Gurko Lanen."
And with this opening crawl, we're off on one of Hollywood's better swashbucklers. Gurko Lanen (George Sanders) is a cruel, smart tyrant. He's the son of a stone mason, determined to win legitimacy for his rule by marrying the lovely Zona (Joan Bennett). A nascent group of freedom fighters, sworn to overthrow Lanen and free Zona, is on the verge of being crushed. Zona is fleeing to France with a secret message imploring the French to come to her aid. Her loyal premier has been accused of treason by Lanen and imprisoned. Then just as Zona's racing carriage is forced to stop with a troop of Lanen's cavalry in pursuit, to her aid comes a handsome stranger (Louis Hayward), apparently out hunting. She's not to worry, he tells her, because his father was the best swordsman in France. Only later, when he secretly determines to help her by playing the fop with Lanen, does she realize that he is the son of the Count of Monte Cristo. The movie reaches a climax when Monte Cristo, who has also become the leader of the rebels as The Torch, unleashes a plot upon Lanen that will destroy him, free Zona and bring happiness once again to Lichtenburg.
The Son of Monte Cristo, as a rip-roaring adventure, is a darn good movie, but it was cursed with having "public domain" painted across its forehead. It has great sets filled with dank dungeons, weeping stone walls, hidden passages, a crypt full of moldering skeletons, sumptuous halls of state, and massive oak doors with iron hinges. It also has some clever dialogue. "General von Lanen," Zona orders, "I command you to set Baron von Neuhof free at once!" "Ordinarily, your wish would be my command," Lanen replies with a smirk, "but von Neuhof must die. I understand your grief. You're thinking of his services to you. But I must consider his danger to me." "I consider that you're having him murdered," Zona says. Lanen smiles at her. "When the same thing happened to Caesar and Louis XVI," he says, "they called it patriotism."
George Sanders nearly walks off with the movie. He looks the part, big shouldered, standing erect and with a buzz cut. Gurko Lanen is no fool, he doesn't believe in luck, and he doesn't take unnecessary chances. And in a nice touch, as much as he intends to force Zona to marry him, it appears he really loves her. Joan Bennett is gorgeous. As an actress she always seemed more intelligent than many. Here. she's more than the standard maiden in distress. Louis Hayward plays Edmund Dantes, the rich son of Monte Cristo, with great panache. He can use a sword with ease, leap over walls and down from balconies. He's a hero with a sense of humor. "I'm worn out climbing in and out of windows and up and down chimneys," he says. "It'll be such a relief to go through an ordinary door again." He makes an engaging fop and a believable action figure.
Incidentally, the director, Rowland V. Lee, also directed 1934's The Count of Monte Cristo with Robert Donant. It's a genuine classic and deserves to be on DVD in a sumptuous transfer.
The DVD I have is from Alpha Video. The picture is clear enough, but faded. Scratches and specks are visible but not too distracting. There are no extras and only four chapter stops.

Only for the Hercules movie fan as the effects aren't as good as they could have been. A low budget production. but the locations are great.
The Gods Of War.......2005-08-24
I thought that I would never get a chance to view these films of my early youth. I found them a joy to watch and they brought back a lot of happy memories. If you are a fan of sword and sandal films from the early 60's then I am sure that you will find these films as enjoyable as I did myself. Apart from nostalgia, the stories are probably a bit coy for the youth of today but lets face it. What isn't!
If I had anything of a critical nature to say about these films then I would say that they should have been protected much earlier than they were. Films like these shouldn't be left to rot in some basement, they should be treasured and protected.

Disappointed & Misleading Photo on DVD.......2007-06-03
I have never felt the need to write a review until now... I loved Jackie Chan in most of his newer movies. I loved "Drunken Master", so decided to purchase the DVD. In reviewing all the similar titles which came up on the Amazon search, I chose the one with the cover photo that resembled the movie. What a total disappointment when I began to watch it!
It was NOT the movie I expected. Many of us do NOT know that Jackie Chan made several versions of this same movie and title. If this is the OLD first version of his movie, why is he using a recent photo?
After more careful investigation it seems that I actally wanted the "Legend of Drunken Master", but the photo on the cover is of a very young Jackie Chan. Because I was fooled before, I am now very hesitant on purchasing any of Jackie Chan's DVD.
Disappointed.......2007-05-21
when i bought this title i was expecting a jacky chan movie but it turned out a jet lee movie though dvd cover indicates jacky chan but the actual content is not
Worst transfer to dvd ever.......2003-11-11
yes its a kung fu classic and Jackie Chan's personal favorite movie, but the video and audio quality are unwatchable, seek out the remastered edition and skip this one.
Drunken Master I.......2001-05-09
This is a good movie. Many are complaining that this movie is not Drunken Master II. It is Drunken Master I, just like it says on the cover. This is a movie with alot of fight scenes and action scenes, although it is slow in the beginning. The style used in this kung fu comedy is the Drunken Eight Immortals, it is a very comical and effective style. This movie demonstrates it well.
Outstanding fight scenes, poor quality DVD.......2001-04-24
I am a big Jackie Chan fan, so I bought this with high expectations. While the fight scenes are spectacular and well staged (an average of a fight every 5-10 minutes), the big disappointment in the is the quality of the transfer to DVD. The picture is blurry at times. Another disappointment is the sound. It is dubbed with very poor quality. Ironically it was very similar to the Kung Fu movies they used to show on television years ago, the very ones that made me a big fan of the genre. It was a trip down memory lane. I am still glad I bought it as a better version is not available and it is better than nothing.

Apart from the inherent clarity and richness of its black-and-white VistaVision--a wonderful format--The Lonely Man could be mistaken for a mediocre "adult Western" episode from '50s TV. The sets look like sets, not living spaces, and people trade ponderous, pause-laden dialogue instead of talking. Jack Palance plays an ex-gunslinger--a papier-mâché death's head--trying to reconnect with son Anthony Perkins, who's grown up (or not grown up) hating him. Meanwhile, gambler Neville Brand, once shot by Palance, waits for henchman Elisha Cook to pick up Palance's trail so other henchman Lee Van Cleef can kill him (got that?). The backstory is so weakly imagined, and the scenes so wanly directed, we have no idea how many years of history the characters have shared, or how many miles separate them as they move toward showdown. Elaine Aiken, a curiously hard-faced blonde "introduced" here, was scarcely seen on screen again. --Richard T. Jameson
Customer Reviews:
The Lonely Man........2007-01-11
This is a movie I have always liked, the quality of the disc was very good and I have watched it several times.
Like Henry King's "The Gunfighter," Levin equates victory with redemption..........2006-11-06
Jacob Wade (Jack Palance) used to be a celebrated shootist just stepping into middle age and mortally weary of having to be asked to leave every town he rides into... To make matters worse, a few notorious outlaws, led by the vile King (Neville Brand), are also out to take him down...
Now he tries to do something for his boy Riley (Anthony Perkins) by catching and breaking mustangs in Echo Canyon, the best wild horse country in the territory...
Complicating the situations further is Jacob's bad relationship with a kid who hates him, and Ada Marshall (Elaine Aiken), a young woman whom Jacob met in a gambling hall, and shot a man on account of her...
Here is a thinking person's Western that deals with one ex-gunman who also is unable to shake his past and whose ultimate goal for taking root again is by lynching...
Levin shows a dark, depressing, and sadly realistic face of the west... In fact, the entire movie is a drama of characters... But watching the film, you would be able to feel how Levin equates victory with redemption...
Great Palance Western.......2005-02-11
When we think of Jack Palance today, we often think of him as a bad guy, like in Batman or Shane. But back in the Fifties, he played a variety of roles, quite a few of them sympathetically.
And one of his best starring roles came in this film, about a gunfighter trying to live down his past, and build a relationship with his estranged son, played by Anthony Perkins. To complicate matters, Palance is going blind, which he keeps a secret from almost everyone, and he is also being pursued by a revenge-minded gambler, played by Neville Brand, who was shot by Palance some time back.
This is a beautifully filmed, poignant Western that deserves to be seen.
Jack Palance at his best!.......2001-06-20
In this western, the only real format to aficianados, Jack Palance displays every ability expected of the finest actors. He is gracious, honest, even having been one of the bad guys. He is courageous to a fault, facing down a number of bad people at once at terrible odds. He even rates a traitors loyalty.
This movie is a must-see if you liked "SHANE", and are tired of "RIO BRAVO" reruns, but like the genre.
Someone in those days actually knew all the classic elements of a good story, and it's obvious when you see this flick. Todays special effects, with bullets whizzing by, would be the only possible improvement for this film. Don't miss it if you like westerns!!!
