Taking its lead from Jonathan Demme's Oscar-winning pulse-raiser The Silence of the Lambs, Copycat strives for intelligence over gristle and carnage. It's a terse, involving thriller that swings away from the usual cinematic notion of violence as a means to an end by forgoing brawn for brains. Young San Francisco police inspector Ruben Goetz (Dermot Mulroney) is teamed with brilliant force vet, M.J. Monahan (Holly Hunter), a diplomatic, no-nonsense cop who must buck the system in order to find a killer who is copycatting the crimes of history's most notorious serial killers. Ruben would rather shoot to kill than merely wound a suspect; Monahan labors to help him think more diplomatically. Everything changes when crank calls arrive at the station from serial-killer pin-up girl psychiatrist Helen Hudson (Sigourney Weaver). She's been housebound for 13 months, ever since murderer Daryll Lee Cullum (Harry Connick Jr.) nearly made her his next victim because she testified against him in court. Though he's in prison, he's still mentor and muse to every loose cannon walking the streets--one of whom is killing people with a vengeance and hoping to finish the job Cullum began. Cop and doc team up to solve the case in this stylish, plot-driven movie. Though Copycat loses steam in the end, it still makes a point. And it serves as a cautionary tale for people everywhere, tossing in street smart warnings against victimization. The teaming of Hunter and Weaver works well, the short and the tall forging a terrific and frictioned relationship that leads to grudging respect. Establishing an ominous atmosphere reminiscent of his classic British TV miniseries The Singing Detective, director Jon Amiel has an eye for the dark and the unusual and it gives this film an edge that eludes most other mainstream filmmakers. --Paula Nechak

Just Like an Alfred Hitchcock movie! The suspense never ends! One movie you should have in your collection! Not to mention this movie has some great actors in it!

Loved this film..............2007-02-23

The storytelling and acting are superb in this 1995 thriller which I recently watched again. Hunter and Weaver shine. Mulroney's role, especially, fits him like a glove as evidenced by his natural and seemingly effortless portrayal of Hunter's character's partner. This superb actor makes it look easy and he deserves more recognition than he gets. Special features include a voiceover behind-the-scenes guide by director Amiel, which is wonderfully informative and enlightening regarding his technique. A gotta see!

Copycat Kicks.......2007-02-20

I love this movie. It's creepy and mysterious and suspensfull. If you are into Serial Killer flicks this is a must see and a good addition to your collection. It's an older movie so it was very hard to find. In fact I checked in every store in my city first and no one had it so I was thrilled that I could not only purchase it but New and on DVD, at a reasonable price too.

I really love this movie and it was not available at my local DVD source. I went so far as to hook up an old VHS to watch the movie and was thrilled when I found I could add it to my DVD collection. It arrived proptly and in perfect condition.

Other Amazon reviews bring out the strengths of this movie, including the strong plot line, Sigourney Weaver's acting and the excellence of the supporting cast.

What seems to be underplayed in the reviews is just how beautiful -- not pretty -- is Holly Hunter's portrayal. So gentle, so vulnerable, so decent, so layered. No scene addresses even a hint of a personal life but you sense a deep depth in her character. In The Piano movie she showed the same resonance, playing a woman who does not speak. In that film she was the emotional still point in a vortex of passion, drawing superb performances from Harvey Keitel and Sam Neill. In Copycat she does the same.

It's a fine film. It's even finer if you just focus your eyes and attention on Holly H in every single scene.
