This Alan Seymour dramatization of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was originally broadcast as a BBC series in 1988. Edited here to feature-length, it's simply superb. Whether you take C. S. Lewis's unsubtle Christian symbolism on board or not, the fact remains that the cycle of Narnia novels, of which The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was the first, are among the best children's fantasy stories of all time. For anyone who spent their formative years on Mars, the story concerns four children who find their way into a magical land benevolently ruled by the mystical lion, Aslan (voiced by Ronald Pickup). Aslan has been deposed by the evil White Witch (played wonderfully by a screechingly camp Barbara Kellerman) who has cast all of Narnia into perpetual winter and whose eventual defeat entails a fearful sacrifice. While the special effects are firmly of the Doctor Who school, Lewis's writing is expertly transferred to the small screen and there are robust but credible performances from the four highly plausible young thespians who are cast in the leading roles. It's the perfect video for cozy family (early!) evening viewing, and one that young viewers will return to again and again. --Roger Thomas, Amazon.co.uk

C.S. Lewis's classic novel The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe makes an ambitious and long-awaited leap to the screen in this modern adaptation. It's a CGI-created world laden with all the special effects and visual wizardry modern filmmaking technology can conjure, which is fine so long as the film stays true to the story that Lewis wrote. And while this film is not a literal translation--it really wants to be so much more than just a kids' movie--for the most part it is faithful enough to the story, and whatever faults it has are happily faults of overreaching, and not of holding back. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe tells the story of the four Pevensie children, Lucy, Peter, Edmund, and Susan, and their adventures in the mystical world of Narnia. Sent to the British countryside for their own safety during the blitz of World War II, they discover an entryway into a mystical world through an old wardrobe. Narnia is inhabited by mythical, anthropomorphic creatures suffering under the hundred-year rule of the cruel White Witch (Tilda Swinton, in a standout role). The arrival of the children gives the creatures of Narnia hope for liberation, and all are dragged into the inevitable conflict between evil (the Witch) and good (Aslan the Lion, the Messiah figure, regally voiced by Liam Neeson).

Director (and co-screenwriter) Andrew Adamson, a veteran of the Shrek franchise, knows his way around a fantasy-based adventure story, and he wisely keeps the story moving when it could easily become bogged down and tiresome. Narnia is, of course, a Christian allegory and the symbology is definitely there (as it should be, otherwise it wouldn't be the story Lewis wrote), but audiences aren't knocked over the head with it, and in the hands of another director it could easily have become pedantic. The focus is squarely on the children and their adventures. The four young actors are respectable in their roles, especially considering the size of the project put on their shoulders, but it's the young Georgie Henley as the curious Lucy who stands out. This isn't a film that wildly succeeds, and in the long run it won't have the same impact as the Harry Potter franchise, but it is well done, and kids will get swept up in the adventure. Note: Narnia does contain battle scenes that some parents may consider too violent for younger children. --Dan Vancini

5 out of 5 stars UN CLASICO RELATO EPICO.......2007-07-03

1 out of 5 stars typical disney's junk for kids and adults with peter-pan syndrome.......2007-06-30

another bore-to-death disney fantasy for kids only with endless annoying music score that could be applied to every other disney movie.
i was so glad that my kids are all grown-ups now, so i don't have to sit thru in the torture chamber to finish this terribly pretentious movie.

5 out of 5 stars Ebdearing epic novel for children!.......2007-06-30

Disney would have made C. S. lewis proud with this production of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. I watched this play every year at Christmas time and have loved it from the start.

The panoramic snow scenes and stage decorum are nothing short of spectacular. The religious allegory that goes with the storyline is enhanced in the battle and the ending is left just right for sequels.

I have said this in many reviews. Disney you deserved the oscar for this picture.

5 out of 5 stars The Chronicles of Narnia.......2007-06-29

Fantasy, adventure, intrigue and triumph. What more could be said of this classic. Great special effects and good acting talents bring this story to life like no other version.

5 out of 5 stars A Visual Feast That Captures The Imagination!.......2007-06-14

The Chronicles of Narnia was brought to life on screen better than I have ever seen it! The visual effects were astonding! A great family adventure! If you liked the book, then you will like this! If you have not read the book, you should still enjoy the movie!

The Chronicles of Narnia, a seven-volume, Bible-based children's fantasy series written in the 1950s by British theologian C.S. Lewis, draws young readers into the magical, dangerous land of Narnia and plunges them into the age-old battle of good and evil. Lewis envisioned these stories as pictures before he wrote them, so it seems only proper that the books would eventually make it to the small screen. In the late 1980s and early '90s, three adventures in this series--The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (169 minutes), Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader (168 minutes), and The Silver Chair (168 minutes)--were faithfully adapted into a TV series by the BBC and Home Vision Entertainment, then edited to feature-length productions. All three of these discs (nine hours of viewing!) are included in this boxed set of DVDs, along with interactive trivia games and more.

Youngsters expecting special effects like those found in The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone may miss the subtler charms of these sweet but rather homespun productions, with humans dressed as woodland creatures and patched-in animation. And kids expecting fast-paced action adventures may snooze after a few hours of these relatively slow-moving scripts. But those who want a refresher course in all things Narnia will be thrilled to see these well-loved fantasies come to life in gorgeous snowy landscapes--the good lion Aslan (played by a large, talking stuffed animal), the horrible White Witch (performed with deliciously over-the-top zeal by actress Barbara Kellerman), the four siblings, fauns, dwarves, deadly sea monsters, and all. --Karin Snelson

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful making of Narnia stories.......2007-03-26

This is a wonderful making of the CS Lewis stories. The only complaint I have is that they did not make all the books. It is very magical and very much follows the books. I like it now as much as I did years ago when I first watched it on PBS. However it is not for everyone. It is low on special effects and more like an old Dr Who. Of course if you like Dr Who then you will love Tom Baker in the Silver Chair. On the other hand, if you want a fast paced high special effect film, then get the Hollywood version. Also if you are offended by Christian symbolism, then neither this nor the Hollywood version is for you.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-03-06

This movie is great. My son loves the stories, but the newer movie is a little too intense for him. The acting is a bit cheesy, but it is true to the books and is great for very young viewers. If you love the books, you can appreciate these movies.

5 out of 5 stars The Chronicles of Narnia (3-Disc Set) The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe/Prince Caspian & The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.......2007-01-10

This Dvd set is awsome (smile) it follow the book and what I could not picture in my mind the dvd made clear for me to understand. Once again my children isn't happy with this dvd...(smile) I brought it for me and I love looking at the character coming to life on screen. Ripacheek is my favorite character and I do recommend this Dvd for family fun and relaxation.

1 out of 5 stars Well it sure as hell didn't age well.......2006-12-09

Well if you saw the first movie you saw the original so I'll give it a star for being a good adaptation. I couldn't sit five minutes without fast forwarding. The child actor in this movie was to fat for the part and at the same time the only decent actor in the movie. The animation was really unimaginative (raptor/chicken anyone or how bout clichéd ghosts) and I'm betting the next two Narnia movies (if they come out) will be just as closely adapted to the screen. And it annoys me that the first book is still completely ignored.

Anyways unless you've seen this in your childhood stay away unless your like me and get a good laugh out of bad effects and spliced in animation. I don't care what year it was made, it's dry, dull, and the actors are wood. So unless you have allot of nostalgia for something like this I'd stay away, thank god for computer animation and save your money to buy a ticket to "Pan's Labyrinth" when it comes out because I doubt a dark R rated fantasy will get the atention it deserves and will make me ill.

5 out of 5 stars Why it's better than the new movie.......2006-11-26

Yes, the visual effects are primitive, but the production is so thoughtful and earnest that it hardly matters. I mean the BBC in the late '80's didn't have the technology for good visual effects. What did you expect?

Also, what's not to like about the casting? The only character I can think of who was arguably better cast in the new movie was Lucy, but BOTH Lucys were extraordinary child actresses. There are people saying Lucy doesn't look the part in this adaptation... true, she's not movie-star cute, but does she have to be? I think she looks a little too grown up, but she acts the part so well you almost don't notice. The other children are superbly cast. They chose a perfect Susan, better cast than the Susan in the new version (although she wasn't bad). Peter is also a lot better in this... I don't think the 2005 filmmakers got a handle on his quite uniquely British character.

But enough of defending this TV adaptation. The makers of the new movie should be the ones on the defensive. There are aspects of this series that the new movie can't even come near. The acting is brilliant and nuanced; all the more impressive coming from children. The White Witch may have over-acted a bit in this TV version, but Tilda Swinton has such a pared-down part in the new movie, it's hard to argue with any certainty that her understated performance was any better. The pacing is perfect in the BBC version. You don't see any of the maudlin crap that Disney puts into the new version, like the ten-minute scene of the kids boarding the train in London and crying as they leave their mummy. It's faithful to the books, not omitting or (what's more annoying) ADDING anything in the plot. At over two hours, the Disney movie could have included most of the book's dialog and dispensed with the overdone, overlong CGI battle scenes, and with adding its own minor characters (ex: the fox).

The music in this adaptation is also SUPERB. It's some of the best theme music I've ever heard for a small- or big-screen production.

You can say the battle scenes were more believeable in the new one, and that the witch's CGI army beats the embarrassing cut-and-paste animations, and costumed actor animals seen in the BBC adaptation. But NOWHERE does the movie create the level of suspense you see in Peter's fight with the wolf in the BBC adaptation. Yes, the wolf was obviously an actor in a costume. But seeing him toss Peter around, and with Peter looking like he was really getting hurt and genuinely scared, it was an incredibly frightening and well-directed scene.

Also, I have nothing bad to say about Liam Neeson, but I couldn't bring myself to believe an Aslan with an American accent in the new version. Neeson has been in the U.S. a long time, and he does an American accent better than an Englih one. I guess the filmmakers thought it would be too ridiculous to have an Irish-sounding Aslan, so they directed him to sound American, and frankly, it doesnt' work. Ronald Pickup's voice makes much more sense for this part.

I suppose if you didn't know what to expect, the shoddy special effects in this version might ruin it for you. But if you appreciate the ways this adaptation beats the movie, you'll be able to see past the visual effects, and you'll be glad you took the time. Makes me wish the BBC directors had just had the same CGI technology to use when they made this... with better visuals, it would be perfect.

It's good to see major studios take a chance on Christian themed films. And now that Disney is in production with a sequel. Bravo! I have never read "The Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis, but my two son's have the complete set, and have enjoyed reading them. Very moving, and extremely well done. Good family and inspirational film making.

Narnia was such a great movie. In many ways it reminded me of Lord of the Rings, with all its great scenery, characters and epic plotlines. The actors were fantastic, doing a great job, especially the youngest who should be greatly appreciated. Overall a GREAT emotional and adventurous movie that everyone should see.

5 out of 5 stars Into the wardrobe.......2006-07-05

For several years, fantasy films were MIA, except the occasional hack job.

Then Peter Jackson's glorious "Lord of the Rings" came and went, leaving some pretty big shoes to fill, as far as fantasy films go. "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" doesn't quite fit the shoes, but it comes a lot closer than any other movie has.

In Andrew Adamson's adaptation, C.S. Lewis's classic fantasy novel comes alive with remarkable fidelity, sparkling special effects, and some truly excellent acting by almost everyone concerned. If "Lord of the Rings" was stern older brother Peter, then this movie is Lucy -- bright, swift and thoroughly charming.

With WW II raging, the four Pevensie children are sent to the countryside, at an eccentric professor's mansion. But during a game of hide-and-seek, little Lucy (Georgie Henley) hides inside a wardrobe -- and stumbles into a wintry wilderness, with a faun she befriends. Alas, her brothers and sisters don't believe her -- but they don't know that Edmund (Skandar Keynes) has also gone through, and befriended a sinister, beautiful Witch (Tilda Swinton).

Eventually all four end up going through the wardrobe, but but they soon find that the Witch is hunting for them, in fear that they will fulfil an ancient prophecy. But Edmund has run off to join the Witch. And so the remaining three must join up with Aslan (Liam Neeson), the leonine god-king of Narnia. But the price for victory against the Witch may be too high.

Since "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" is labelled both a kids' book and a Christian fantasy, it's easy to get put off by the description of it. Don't be. Director Andrew Adamson ("Shrek" and "Shrek 2") has obviously given this his whole heart and soul, and it has the right mixture of majesty and humor that a film like this needed.

And Adamson does a spectacular job. The the taut race across a frozen river, the bombing of London, tea with the faun Tumnus, and even the cameo by Father Christmas (who gets a medieval makeover) -- all of these come to life with remarkable skill and grace, but with respect for its audience's intelligence. The make-or-break scene is Aslan stalking to the stone table, and the horrifying sacrifice scene that follows does justice to Lewis' novel.

But Adamson doesn't let it get overinflated on its own ego. When Edmund tells his horse, "Whoa, boy!" it retorts peevishly, "My NAME is Philip!"; elsewhere, the beavers snipe at each other like an old married couple. Those moments of lightness -- and giving Aslan a sense of humor -- keep the film from seeming self-conscious.

And of course, the special effects. WETA workship deserves an award (it's been nominated for a few) for the amazing CGI, ranging from goat-legged Tumnus to the lion Aslan, who looks almost real. They are especially good in battle scenes, which are startlingly savage and brutal, but filled with outstanding moments, such as a centaur leaping over the Witch and nearly beheading her.

Young Georgie Henley is probably the most capable actress here, conveying misery, awe, delight, childish glee and sorrow. All this from a small child, when a lot of adult actors can't manage that much. Skandar Keynes and Anna Popplewell turn in good performances as Edmund and Susan. Swinton and William Moseley (Peter) start off rather woodenly, but they both blossom when the four arrive in Narnia.

Though Lewis was reportedly against a live-action adaptation of the Chronicles, it's hard to imagine him having a problem with this rapid-fire, sparkling adaptation. (And stay for the credits for an extra surprise...)

4 out of 5 stars "You are giving me your life and saving no one. So much for love.".......2006-05-28

The Pevensie family must split-up due to the war and the children go to the country for safety. There Lucy while playing a game of "Hide-and-seek" discovers an old wardrobe in a spare room. There upon entering stumble into the country of Narnia. The story begins.

If you come at this film with no preconceptions or knowledge of the writer or writing. And of course did not see the BBC production, than you could almost perceive this film tale as a mild "Lord of the rings." We have the cultural classic coming of age journey that requires sacrifice and a new understanding of life.

The original BBC production truer to the story was of course lower budget and would appeal to a different audience. I think Disney adjusted this film to match their perceived audience.

The book which is a classic also has a following. However I must say that I think that C.S. Lewis's fictional works are a pail reflection of his other works.

I did find the film fun to watch especially after viewing the voiceover commentaries that told what they were trying to accomplish including the "Potty Mouth Bucket". And this was a good selection of character actors. The sets had great depth and care taken. Yet this is an interpretation of a book that is bay an author that is not the best at fiction and should in no way be compared with other works either book or movie. Dismay is trying to portray the essence of the story, not make a block buster action CGI film. In those contents this movie was well done.

Watch for "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" (2007)

As a side note I own wardrobe similar although not as large as the one displayed in the movie. So foe the only being that have been lost in it are my cats.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing movie.......2006-05-09

I haven't read the book, so I don't know how faithful it is to it. But I was very disappointed in the movie.

I had heard of it as a Christian allegory. It includes what is essentially a crucifixion and resurrection scene (the lion Aslan agrees to be killed to save the life of Edmund, a boy portrayed as a traitor), but this seems awkwardly placed in an otherwise secular action movie. It just doesn't fit. This was the major source of my disappointment in the movie. On the whole the movie did not seem to me to represent Christian values, and the crucifixion and resurrection bit semed quite discordant with the rest of the movie.

The acting was generally good, with the two young actresses playing the two girls offering particularly outstanding performances. But it was basically a fairly run-of-the-mill action movie with the discordant Christian reference just plopped into it.

But the evil witch has plans of her own.

5 out of 5 stars Oldie but goodie............2007-06-01

I grew up watching the BBC versions of C.S. Lewis' books and was never disappointed. Sure, they could've used a bigger budget and all the special effects technology we can put to use today, but I think they did brilliantly with what they had. I was actually disappointed when I went to see the "newer" version in the theater....seems to lack some of the heart and soul that I loved.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Lion Would be Pleased .......2007-03-07

Preface: Even though I have already reviewed this series as a whole ( sometime ago now), I felt the need to write about each individual film in the series to give them the detailed critiques they deserve. 1: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. This was the first film in the series, made in 1988 and aired on the BBC1 as a sixpart, thirty-minute-each series. It's true this film is now almost twenty years old and at some points it shows but let's go over the long 'goods' list first. The acting really is very good with the four child actors charming but at the same time capable of showing great emotion and characterization and Barbara Kellerman giving a suitably evil if slightly over-the-top performance as the White Witch. 'Big Mick' is wildly entertaing as the little man who drves her slege and despite the obvious costume ( it does still look good), Martin Stone's performance as Maugrim the wolf makes the character seem animalistic. Of course there's Jeffery Perry as Mr. Tumnus the faun who, along with the other repressed residents of narnia is well design with intricicate costuming and makeup and and highly mythical feel. None of the cast is particularly well known ( even in Britain) other than Michael Aldridge who is wonderful as the professer and Ronald Pickup, whom you may recognize from othe British programs as the voice of Aslan (incidentally, one reviewer I read had a problem with Pickup's portayl and I can't understand why because Aslan is truly one of the best things about this production and looks more real than Disney's.) This flows well into my next good thing. The live-action actors have wonderful, beautifully well-done costumes, hair and makeup and each section- dwarfs, fauns, dryads and nydads, talking animals- seem to have mythological looks and battle skills of their own. The sets and scenery are great too! From the proffessor's old country home to the barren, winter wasitland of the White Witch's Narnia, to the cramped dwellings and simple dwellings of Tumnus and the Beavers, the film is visually pleasing to the eye that does not look for huge-scale FX. By the way as for one reviewer who noted that many of the indoor sets/props looked made up of things foud around the house- is it not natural that an indoor set of HOUSE should have common household objects? and just because everything may not have been specially crafted like in modern films, does not mean it looks bad, rather I find it all cosy and pleasing to the eye, especially the Beavers' house. While were at it the statue effects were pretty realistic and Maugrim's face appearing on the letter Peter reads about Tumnus' arrest is still breathtaking. I also thought the green-screen flying sequence was reasonably well-done for 1980s TV and the camera trickery and other techniques used for the giants in the queen's courtyard were extremley well done. Also of note is the scene where the witch falls off of the cliff when Asland shakes it roaring- it' s by far the best part of the battle, which was all things considered pretty exiting. Sure there are some questionable creature-cartoons but at least the animation is remotley likeable. Overall, 4/5- great BBC TV Serial.

The DVD was very interesting. I learned that there was a more recent make of the story. Very good Christian allegory.
Why did I receive this order and I was told that you couldn't send a later order because the back would not honor my debit card??

This movie was sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo awesome! Wow! Now, I'll start with the cast Sophie Cook who played Susan was so loveable and heart warming. Her turquoise hair ribbon was so cool. Lucy was very happy, and cheered my heart. I love the scene where she was with Mr. Tumnus. Well, bye and I love this so much, and I Will remember everyone. Oh, yes Aslan was so cute in the collosal puppet suit. I just want to kiss him. Well it's my bedtime, bye Narnia
