Red Dirt opens with lush images of rain-drenched faces and half-naked bodies lying entwined against the gnarled roots of a tree. Slowly, the movie unwinds the story of Griffith (Dan Montgomery), a young man who feels trapped in a small Southern town by the madness of his invalid aunt (Karen Black). His only comfort is his secret affair with his cousin Emily (Aleksa Palladino), but even that begins to lose its meaning. When a stranger (Walton Goggins) seeks to rent a cottage on Griffith's property, they strike up a friendship that offers Griffith the possibility of escape. At first, Red Dirt threatens to drown in the tortured emotions of a Southern gothic novel, but the excellent performances slowly build a rich, affecting web of hope and passion. Palladino, a young beauty with amazingly thick red hair, is particularly striking. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Family secrets, simmering anger, and reporessed sexual desires vividly capture life in the Deep South. Griffith, a morose young man, orphaned as a child, dreams of leaving home but feels tied down by his cousin (who is also his lover) and his invalid aunt. When a mysterious man appears to rent the family cottage, Griffith is tantalized with the possibility of escape and homoerotic fulfillment.

Wasn't my thing.......2007-06-08
The movie was well filmed, directed and acted. I gave it 3 stars for that. I just couldn't get into it though. It was slow, over-dramatic, and not entirely believable.
Pass on this.......2007-04-22
This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. You have to be a mind reader to figure out what is happening. Don't waste your time.
Romantic.......2007-04-09
"Red Dirt"
Romance
Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
"Red Dirt" is an enigmatic film dealing with two major themes--agoraphobia and claustrophobia. As the film deals with the difficulty and pain of expressing love and the changes that love takes, we are witness to a southern family and how love affects it. This film is one that demands complete immersion into the story line. Set along the Mississippi River, the presence of the South is readily felt from the moment the movie opens. It revolves around the character of Griffin who longs to leave the south after finishing high school but feels an obligation to stay and see to his Aunt Summer (a bravura performance by Karen Black) who raises him after his parents died. Summer is not a well woman; she suffers from depression or is bi-polar--we do not know. She closer herself up in a room listening to operas. When he is not tending to his aunt, Grif hangs around with his cousin, Emily. Suddenly everything changes when a young drifter, Lee, comes on the scene and becomes Grif's friend.
There is a lot of character development in the movie. We see that Grif comes to terms with his sexuality with a quick kiss to Lee and so ends the question in his mind as to what he s sexually. Overtly gay, this film is not but after a second viewing of it. I saw many things I did not see the first time. When we meet Lee, we think that he is nothing more than a drifter with no goal in his life and no sense of direction.
The script has many problems but the movie has any pluses that negate the minuses. The acting is superb as is the cinematography. The emotional tenseness of the film is overwhelming. We not only see the emotions but we feel them as well. Although the movie is set in the present, the characters were not ready to admit their true feelings because of a primitive belief system in which the characters believed. Because of this, romance was not allowed to blossom. Perhaps this is reflective of people who are trapped by what they consider to be the rules of society. Yet with that the movie is a love story. It also deals with the evil perpetrated by the women in this movie. The lies and manipulations and calculations that they concocted were responsible to make Griffin the nervous wreck that he was. Griffin was unable to make his escape and he stays, imprisoned by a half-mad woman. He had the chance to find happiness but instead he imprisons his life by staying. It isn't to the bizarre end of the movie that any hope surfaces for Grif.
In today's world of determinist sexuality and the politics of identity, this movie fails drastically. People fall in and out of love and there is the overt hint that sex and love do not have to be related. This s what I found to be so interesting in "Red Dirt". Instead of the usual teenage coming out story there is no tediousness. It is a movie that s quite simply about love minus all of the gay clichés so associated with coming out.
Not crossing that line.......2007-01-21
Red Dirt clearly shows the difference between what woman need, want, and ultimately get; versus what men want, need, and cannot have. The isolation of living in a rural area reflects what many men feel, yet understand those feelings are best kept as a dirty secret in a culture that embraces women's feeling first.
Perhaps this film is best described as one man's journey of learning how to love, for his first time, in a non-sexual way -- and this lesson helps him overcome a past that has been disappointing and empty. I think it is a difficult issue for grown men (as opposed to teenaged boys) to face without crossing that line of full engagement, which itself involves different and un-related dynamics.
Interesting but not compelling.......2007-01-08
Not a bad movie but worth a rental only. Karen Black was campy and fabulous as always but the movie never really took off. While it was realistic in many aspects, it just never got me to care that much about the main characters.

"the all-time greatest country duo".......2004-10-12
Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn are a phenomenon, with 27 million albums sold, 21 # 1 hits and countless major awards, they have had over a dozen years of incredible success, all so well deserved.
With Kix on guitar and Ronnie on lead vocals, they always put on a razzle-dazzle show, with superb musicianship and high energy performances.
Though this is a limited DVD in both quantity of videos as well as price, it gives a delightful snapshot of what these two artists can do.
1: "Red Dirt Road", a clever collage of country images in warm ochre toned colors, with the song from the "Red Dirt Road" CD from 2003.
2: "Ain't Nothin' but You", features an attractive fashion model, and has some interesting changes in the melody that appeals to me, and the song comes from the "Steers & Stripes" CD from 2001.
3: "Only in America", is a stage performance with film clips interspersed with it to illustrate the song, also from 2001's "Steers & Stripes".
4: "My Heart is Lost to You", yet another "Steers & Stripes" entry, with imaginative visuals, a gorgeous melodic line, cars in the desert and a duo of Spanish dancers. I love this video !
5: "My Maria", features some wonderful horsemanship from Kix, and candlelit Spanish-style rooms and architecture; a big hit from the "Borderline" CD released in 1996.
6: "Boot Scootin' Boogie" is an irresistible, spirited tune, with a great honky tonk piano part and a marvelous performance from Kix and Ronnie, and the song came from the "Brand New Man" CD released in 1991.
Total playing time approximately 23 minutes.
Two of these are already on the Greatest Hits Collection!!.......2004-04-06
Coming from England it's particularly difficult to hear and see any country music, and almost impossible to hear new country music. This release from Brooks and Dunn is a God-send to be honest, although like a lot of recent country music DVD releases it is very short, although to be fair the price does match. The average music buyer in England will not have any idea who these two are, even though their albums do usually get a UK release there is no promotion whatsoever and it's usually not too long before they're in the bargin bucket.
So as a very frustrated country music fan this sort of DVDs are very welcome. For this partiular release I was a little disappointed to see two videos included from their previous collection (My Maria and Boot Scootin' Boogie) but the new videos more or less made up for it. Three of the remaining four were completely new to me (the Red Dirt Road video I'd managed to see while on holiday in Nashville). The song Ain't Nothing 'Bout You is a personal favourite of mine and I was delighted to finally see the video.
Overall I was very pleased with this release but coming from a country music starved country it's probably a better release me than other fans in the US where the wonderful CMT is available. For people in the UK I would recommend this release wholeheartly but for US fans I would probably tread carefully. UK fans need to be aware of the extra cost for shipping to the UK but I wouldn't let that put you off.
