Ethan Hawke, fresh faced and full of determination, tackles the icy wilds and rowdy boom towns of Alaska in Disney's 1991 adaptation of Jack London's turn-of-the-century gold rush classic. Though somewhat tamed for young audiences, the story of a city kid who befriends a feral half-wolf/half-dog orphan while learning to survive the dangers of nature and man has its share of peril and rousing scenes of wilderness adventure. But the humans are upstaged by both the animals (the standoff between White Fang and a wild brown bear is a highlight) and the Alaskan landscape, from the snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes of winter to the rich green forests and whitecap rivers of summer. The scenes of dogfights and wild wolves hunting game are carefully shot to avoid bloodshed (the opening disclaimer takes pains to remind viewers that all such scenes have been simulated), but they may still be too intense for young children. Good movie ---but nothing like the book.......2007-05-31

I had read White Fang with my 8th graders recently and thought it might be good to compare with the movie. WOAH! Who is Jack? Where was Weedon Scott? Gray Beaver is actually kind of a nice guy in this movie. It was a good adventure movie, but if you are expecting it to be like the book, think again. It WAS good to show the students that movies aren't always accurate to the book, and that was a good lesson to teach. I would have liked this production to be truer to the novel, but not a bad movie to enjoy with the family.

White Fang.......2007-05-12

A very well orchastrated and touching sequel to that age old classic "Call of the Wild." I loved the book and the old movie, and this has proven to be a classic in the making to match it. The actors were believable and had you right in the midst of their struggles, clashes, and victories. Heart tugging and a tear jerker at times. It is definitely a keeper and well worth to add to ones library of films.

Delightful Surprise.......2007-04-29

I own this movie. First saw it on satellite because I love Jack London and the TIVO caught this because it is based on his novel. Even though it is different from the novel it captures the spirit of his story and as Ebert says, it is great entertainment in its own right. Anyone who loves canines is going to love this movie. Even some people I know who don't love canines, still loved the movie.

I liked it so much I bought the DVD. Excellent story, excellent soundtrack (the music is beautiful), excellent cinematography, excellent acting by both man and beast. Four stars because as like another previous reviewer, to release a movie as beautiful as this one in pan and scan instead of widescreen is a crime. Why Disney? This movie deserved widescreen. This movie is quality, maybe the best Disney live action movie, surely the best Disney live action movie I have ever seen. Good for repeated viewing at my house and well worth the purchase.

What does this have to do with Jack London's book?.......2007-01-09

I love Jack London's books and have since childhood, so it's hard for me to understand why Disney would take a classic book title and make up a new story to go under it. I re-read WHITE FANG two months ago and there is precious little in this movie that was in the book. Jack London did not write kiddie books (nor did Anna Sewell, for that matter) and I understand how difficult it would be to adapt his works to the screen and get a family rating. Even so, people who read and loved the book and expect to see an adaptation of the original classic might well be terribly disappointed. If it's a good film and a good original script, then it should be allowed its own title and the Disney writers should get the credit for the story.

This movie is very simple, and unique. It's the kind of love story which you really believe in while you're watching because it doesn't feel phony. This can be credited to the acting, the situation, and the plot as well. This isn't about a man falling madly in love with a beautiful woman and then spending his life missing her. That's all been done, and that's what makes this film a breath of fresh air. River Phoenix shows why he is missed by so many, and really allows you to connect with his character. I recomend this to anyone who wants to see love put to true art, and be touched at the same time.

I got sucked into this movie on IFC last night and was very glad I did. I was reminded just what a compelling and talented actor River Pheonix was and couldn't help feeling sad at various points throughout the film about our loss of his brilliance. Lili Taylor played her character beautifully. Despite her meek, unassuming, and shy manner, her strength shone through and she did not allow Eddie to intimidate her or cause her to back away from her ideals.
As many other reviewers have noted, this film does a wonderful job of capturing the sweetness and the awkwardness of young and new love. I loved the contrast between Eddie's night with Rose and that of his buddies raucous, hollow ramblings.
Where I found the movie lacking was at the end. It felt a little too contrived and formulaic for me, especially in light of the rest of the film and it's attempt to show the illusions of both characters, their extreme difference in view points, and the development of these fledgling new identities that we can only really guess at in the final scene. So much is revealed to us in the subtle scenes and conversations they share in their night together and yet at the end we are only shown one scene from Eddie's experience in Vietnam and must guess at who they have both become and what it is that brings them back together. In addition, there was some very interesting commentary on the United States - its culture and foreign policy - that I think is highly relevant today. This element was very much overshadowed by the love story and I think deserved more focus.
Despite this, I still very much enjoyed it and would recommend it if not only to see these two great actors in a moving story.

Decent overview.......2004-01-08

This DVD provides a decent overview of attack aircraft, dating back to 1910. It includes interviews of pilots of the time and original video of early flight. At the end, it analyzes the future of attack aircraft and emphasizes stealth technology as the main driving force.

I didn't give this DVD 5 stars because I was looking for a little more depth into more recent attack aircraft, but that was a personal grievance and is not a criticism of the quality of this DVD.

Great Documentary.......2000-02-21

This was a wonderful and informative documentary on bombers since the beginning of aviation. There is much information that I did not know that is exclusive to this DVD. The back cover shows a B1 Bomber but there is virtually no footage of this plane. This was a dissapointment but you will see the B 52, F 111, and many others including the stealth B2 bomber. Your only mistake in buying this DVD is that for a few bucks more you can have the 3 DVD set in a collectors case for less than the price of the three together. It includes bombers, fighters, and attack aircraft.

I reccomend this to any aviation lovers because of the content and exceptional price. It is only in 2 channel audio for all you home theater buffs. IMAX please come to the rescue.

Description
