5 out of 5 stars M*A*S*H - Goodbye, Farewell & Amen.......2007-06-27

I am a MASH junkie, and this is the ultimate MASH DVD. In addition to the "Last Mash" episode--which still holds the record for the largest audience ever for a TV show--the DVD includes the MASH 30th Anniversary with all the living members of the cast, and a Shelly Long-hosted "Memories of Mash, which is very well done.

If you like MASH, you will love this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars A Satisfying End to a Great TV Series!.......2007-06-26

Whether you like the series or not, the series finale/movie was extremely well-written and a very fitting conclusion to one of the most powerful and entertaining series ever!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Little Collection.......2007-06-12

Being a Mash fan since High School, this episode really means alot to me. It's the end and the begining for all the characters, and for us fans, it's a way of seeing what happened to our unit, and where we may go together.
This DVD is a must buy! For all Mash fans, it has behind the scenes footage of the final day of shooting, and it also has the 30th Anniversary Reunion that ran on Fox in 2003; which included the cast and the producers. It even has short trivia questions, so you can test your Mash knowledge. It also covers some interviews with the cast during the show and after the show ended, which is great, because the stories are absolutly awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Friends..take my advice, pull down your pants & slide on the ice!.......2007-06-08

For MASH fans, having access to the most memorable final episode ever, is beyond a treat. It captured the best of all of the years MASH was on, honored the characters and made you believe in their sorrows. I never get tired of watching it. --Dr. Freidman at his finest :)

5 out of 5 stars Well, I guess it's better than nothing.......2007-05-24

Yes, 20th Century Fox really kicked all us original M*A*S*H fans in the head for how they dragged out the releases of each season just slowly as hell over the years, just to put out an attractive complete series box set with hours of extras for less than half of what we, the most loyal fans, had to pay. I'm glad that I don't have to buy that box set now just to get the bonus extras. So, I guess I'll just have to cough up another 25 bucks just to get the bonus features. Another 25 bucks! Jeee-zuss!!!

So now, we have to buy the final episode of "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" again just to buy the bonus features. And so now we've paid for two copies of that same final episode. Pay, pay, and pay some more! Go ahead 20th Century Fox, suck us dry! Here, just take my whole wallet!

They could have just released the bonus features without the final episode and made it a lower cost for all us "already disgruntled" M*A*S*H fans. They could have just called it: "M*A*S*H: The Bonus Box For All the Whiners and the Cry Babies". Yes, I'd be targeted for purchasing it.

But alas, 20th Century Fox has now entered a new arena of how to disappoint classic TV fans. Now they are releasing the first season of "WKRP in Cincinati" and they are already getting tons of negative backlash for releasing the show WITHOUT the original songs from the series. Way to go 20th Century Fox, I guess you just can't win.

But, I have learned from 20th Century Fox, to be more cautious about buying my favorite TV shows on to DVD. I won't buy any DVD collection until I know all the seasons have been released. So, I'll just wait for that one big box set that's likely to be released in the end.

Slowly, his program begins to work, giving the students new hope and purpose. But the local drug lord, himself a martial arts expert, vows to stop Stevens' positive influence. Now Stevens must fight to save his own life, as well as the lives of his rebellious young students.

4 out of 5 stars looking for capoeira? this is the movie.......2007-05-30

Amongst the thousands of martial arts films in circulation, it is near impossible to find one that focuses on Capoeira fighting. And among a few films that contain tournaments, such as the Bloodsport series, you can find a Capoeira fighter in the tournament. But if you are looking for a fighting style used throughout an entire film, Only The Strong is the only movie I know of.

In addition to a Capoeira treat, the movie stars Marc Dacascos, a fan favorite by many who has been in several notable films such as Drive, Cradle 2 The Grave, and American Samurai. Though not a true Capoeira fighter, Dacascos did a pretty good job of learning it for this film. Though the fights look unrealistic because of all the flash of the moves, nevertheless it is beautiful choreography that is quite original and never gets old. This is why we watch movies after all, to see fantasy fights that look sweet.

As for the story, though somewhat cheesy, I thought it too was quite original. The Mark Dacascos character returns to his old high school in Miami, Florida and begins a program to teach the absolute worst kids there the art of Capoeira. Unfortunately, one of the student's cousins, Silverio (played by Paco Christian Prieto - Street Law, Champions), tries to put an end to it, leading up to a big confrontation and fight between Dacascos and Prieto. I loved the fight scene. It lasted 4 minutes, about average length, and took place on a sgement of Miami beach at night. The choreography for this fight was amazing to watch.
You might even like the soundtrack for this film, which incorporates a lot of rhythm and beat for the fighting. Songs like "Bananawe" may stick in your head for hours and hours after watching.
I highly recommend Only The Strong if you want to see a lot of Capoeira fighting, or just something different in a martial arts movie. I also recommend Tony Jaa's newest movie "The Protector" if you want to see a really flashly fight involving Capoeira.

5 out of 5 stars Martial arts to a dance.......2007-05-15

I love this Brazilain technique looks imposible. this is one of my all time favourite movie. good thing is it actually has a story line to it, it doesn't go straight to fighting. As a kid going to a bad schooll with a bad attitude a teacher straightens him out then ships off to the navy in brazil were he learns the deadily art of capoeira.

3 out of 5 stars If you like Capoeira you have seen this already.......2007-01-03

So only the strong is not a great movie. Poor acting, formulaic plot, cheesy....everything but it is one of the only movies in the U.S. that has a lot of Capoeira. As a capoeirista myself I found the actual demonstration of the art to be very limited and the writers understanding of the art to be somewhat lacking. Mark Dacascos is not a Capoeirista but trained in a style of kung fu, explaining why his skill in Capoeira is less than desireable but his basic fighting knowledge pretty good. He trained for six months in capoeira for this movie which is not enought to really get any good. In response to one of the other posts, Capoeira is Brazilian. It is based on an African fighting style but does not currently , nor has it since the slaves modified it so much, resembled the lost African art it originated from. OTS is a campy movie that has a lot of flaws to it.

All that being said I have to say that I really liked. Admittedly it has so many things wrong with it that I could not list them all here but I didn't care when watching it. It is fun, and easy to get into. As a capoeirista I felt that they showed a good effort in displaying all the art in many parts, even if the writers really didn't understand on a higher level what it is about. The movie was memorable and entertaining. I recomend watching it but I just can't give it more than three stars because of huge cheese factor. If you like movies such as the last dragon you will like this. If you haven't seen TLD then buy them both, get a few friends together and watch them both. Great fun and a lot of memorable, cheesy quotes that will last you a lifetime.

3 out of 5 stars gREAT SHOWCASE FOR mARK DACASCAS, don't expect that good of a movie.......2006-03-07

This is oen of your favorite movies from back when you were 10, you probably remember it. Most of the characters seemed like they are dubbed even though this is an American movie. No real great fight scenes, but if you are one of those people who like Jet Li's the Master, then you will probably like this.

4 out of 5 stars A strong movie.......2006-02-01

Mark Darascos is a great martial-artist and "Only the Strong" is where he shines. This film is an under-rated flick that is a must own for any fan of martial-art movies.

There's good news aplenty in this DVD reissue of Say Amen, Somebody, director George T. Nierenberg's 1980 film focusing on some of the giants of modern gospel music and the younger singers whom they inspired. That's "good news" as in the word of God, and what better way to express the power of faith than through this powerful and uplifting music? Liner notes writer Anthony Heilbut describes the film as an exploration of "the golden age of gospel music in its dying hour," and Nierenberg (whose informative and illuminating commentary track, like Heilbut's lengthy notes, is one of the several features that justify the DVD's "bonus deluxe" tag) focuses principally on two senior citizens: Thomas Dorsey, often credited as "the father of gospel music," and Willie Mae Ford Smith, a St. Louis-based singer and an innovator who helped popularize the modern gospel singing style, with its emphasis on exaggerated, open-mouthed vibrato and careful articulation of the lyrics. Dorsey is an engaging raconteur who explains the origins of modern gospel (once a secular songwriter who wrote for Ma Rainey and others, he added rhythm to traditional hymns and spirituals, essentially "bringing the blues into church") and speaks movingly of the trials and tribulations that led to his writing the classic "Precious Lord." For her part, Smith is not only a tireless worker but something of a feminist pioneer who insisted early on that women have just as much right as men to spread the word (her own son's remark that "women ought to stay in their proper place: behind the man" illustrates what an uphill battle that was, and is); this chauvinism, along with the creeping commercialism that makes singers like the O'Neal Twins wonder if they're compromising their evangelical calling, are among the deeper issues Nierenberg's film addresses. But in the long run, of course, it's all about the music, and the DVD package includes 18 complete performances accessible via separate menu, as well as a 15-song CD. All of this will prompt not only a few "amens," but no doubt some "hallelujahs" too. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Gone Too Long.......2007-05-08

As great documentaries have gained a new audience in independent film, it's fun to revisit some of the movies that transformed the genre and infused it with more humanity and feeling. While the Maysles' works were fundamental, it would be tough to omit SAY AMEN, SOMEBODY from the list of greats.

This beautiful, uplifting film focuses largely on the late-life careers of Thomas A Dorsey and the amazing Willie Mae Ford Smith. In an unsentimental and elegaic way, we witness the end of era -- one that shaped American culture, and also gave immeasurable help to people of color from the 1920's through the mid-eighties, when commercial producers replaced the veterans at leading labels.

One of the most amazing qualities of this beautifuly photograhed, edited and recorded film is that its emotional magnetism would convince an atheist to examine the faith of others with more introspection. It is not the scenes of ministers speaking in tongues or parishioners being annointed that matter here as much as the infectious lyrics and rhythm of indelible performances. Couched somewhere between traditional blues and early R&B, gospel haped part of what it means to be American --and this beautifully designed set pays it the homage it deserves.

For a VERY low price, I received a 70-minute CD with 15 of the best performances from the film, and the remastered film on DVD with a photographic gallery and other features. The two dics are packed in a hardcover long-pack with an informative booklet -- all of it well-designed.

I rank this documentary with SALESMAN, HARLAN COUNTY, USA; TOSCA'S KISS, GREY GARDENS, WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE and perhaps five or six other fwonderful ilms. Personally, I wouldn't miss this DVD-and-soundtrack set for the world.

5 out of 5 stars Not the first release of this wonderful documentary but I suspect the best.......2007-03-31

"Say Amen, Somebody" was released on DVD by Xenon Pictures in 2001; so, this is not the first release, but it is still an amazing documentary. I had the pleasure to go on a Caribbean jazz cruise on which the Barrett Sisters were scheduled to sing the first Saturday night with little fanfare. They were so thrilling that the ship cancelled the Wednesday's evening shows for both those on the jazz cruise and the rest of the passengers and subsituted the Barrett Sisters (featured here. To say they brought down the house (or ship if you must) was an understatement. Willie Mae Ford Smith, Thomas A. Dorsey and The O'Neal Twins plus The Barrett Sisters make this essential watching even if you think you won't be moved by Gospel. This is one amazing documentary. It was premiered at the Telluride Movie Festival and Roger Ebert told me one of the most thrilling moments of his life was seeing the film followed by the stars appearing live after the movie. I wish I had been there but seeing the Barrett Sisters was close enough. Search out their few CDs; they are brilliant. If you have not watched the recently Paul Simon Gospel All-Star DVD do so. It's a close second to "Say Amen, Somebody."

5 out of 5 stars Hallelujah, It's Finally On DVD!.......2007-03-09

I was wondering which would come first....the rapture, or the DVD release of Say Amen, Somebody. This fantastic and uplifting documentary on the founders of gospel music is definitely my favorite documentary of all time. I had an old VHS that was pretty much worn out - this is one movie that you can watch and enjoy over and over again - so when I found out that Say Amen, Somebody was not only being released as a 'Bonus Deluxe' DVD, but that it would also include a CD of the soundtrack, I was shouting for joy! Pop the DVD in your home player, or the CD in your car stereo, and you'll be uplifted.

The packaging is very impressive, including a booklet with articles on the movie as well as the featured artists, a director's commentary, and indexed musical numbers for when you want to skip ahead to the good stuff. Lots of vintage photos, both in the booklet and on the DVD, add to the quality and collectibility of this DVD set. This was true history in the making. Even if you're not a fan of gospel music, this movie will make you a believer!

5 out of 5 stars SAY AMEN SOMEBODY IS A REAL GEM!!!.......2007-02-19

Years ago the producer of this awesome documentary "Say Amen Somebody" Karen Nierenberg, loaned me her video copy for viewing. I was so impressed with the gospel singing, the high caliber and multi-facited informational content of this film that I requested a copy for myself. At the time she didn't have access to any others and thought perhaps if I looked around I could find a copy.

Well, at that time there were no DVDs; I went on line to obtain a video copy and found a few copies that were new or used, however they were expensive.

Over the years I never forgot about this film, and so a couple of months ago, I went on line to see if a DVD had been made available and found out that a deluxe DVD was being produced; I was elated and pre-ordered a copy. I have recently received this DVD and find it to be REAL GEM!!

For openers, it isn't packaged like a DVD. It looks like a small hard covered book that includes 24 pages of original rare photos and essays by gospel music scholar, Anthony Heilbut, as well as DVD commentary by the director, George T. Nierenberg. As a bonus, a 15-song soundtrack CD is also included.

I feel blessed to have found out that this wonderful film has been formated to DVD and at an affordable cost

Many thanks to the producers of this extraordinary documentary.

Ybati

5 out of 5 stars A great and historically important documentary.......2007-02-04

This is just a superb, wonderful documentary about gospel music and some of the central historical figures who help to create and develop the genre of gospel music. I'm delighted that it has finally been released on DVD. I can't praise this film enough. The director does a beautiful job of allowing the persons in this film to communicate directly with the viewer, without noticeable intrusion. Thomas A. Dorsey and Willie Mae Ford Smith are the two key figures in this film and two of the most important figures in the history of gospel. They are inspirational and joyfully spiritual people. You don't have to be Christian to appreciate the wonders of this film ... I'm not and I do!

5 out of 5 stars The price of dissidence.......2007-04-20

This is the story of SS Officer Kurt Gerstein, the "good Nazi" who was good at his job and believed in his work until he realized what it was. This is my first experience with the concept of the "good Nazi," especially one that operates in the ranks of the SS - but the story claims to be true. While the Gerstein character is real, the Catholic Priest who tries to help him is a fictional character, a composite of others. Still, I've done a lot of reading on the holocaust, and I have yet to find a Catholic Priest who actually worked the ovens. Please. The Nazis made the Jews do that, and they made them do it for a reason. Because the Nazis were very, very "good" at what they did, and the mental torture made the physical torture exquisite.

Gerstein's area of expertise was "disinfection," but he had no idea, apparently, what the "final solution" was all about. Most Germans did not, or if they did, were in complete denial about it. Denial is not that hard to believe. We are living in it now.

It isn't until Gerstin actually gets to look through the peephole each gas chamber contained that he could see the naked bodies climbing all over each other, the weakest at the bottom, in order to get to what air was left at the top. Apparently, the other Nazis weren't bothered. He was.

"I must be the eyes of God in that hell!" cries the Priest. A great line. I'm sure God had lots of eyes in that hell.

With each attempt to work within the system, as many of us continue to do in our own corrupt systems, the protests are familiar:

"We are at war!" (When at war, all bets are off)

"Germans are incapable of such attrocities!" (How often have I heard that bureaucracies couldn't organize a conspiracy to wipe their own noses!)

Protestations were dismissed as "rumors" and "conspiracy theories." (sigh) The more things change...

"The Jews left for America long ago."

"There is no proof." (Just because there is no proof doesn't mean it isn't happening.)

The scene of the Germans celebrating Christmas with their fancy dinner and fancy liquor singing "Silent Night" when you just know ashes of the dead are falling, mixed with snow is probably the creepiest scene.

The Pope never even pronounced the word "Jew" or "Concentration Camp." Just like so many Presidents who never pronounced the word "AIDS".

"We refuse to negotiate with the Nazis." ("We don't negotiate with terrorists)

"Jews are being sent to labor camps!" (Certainly not being tortured and killed!)

One line - "It is out of the question for an SS who is betraying his country to appear at the Vatican!" What kind of a Catch 22 is that???

I refuse to take the hard line that Gerstein was a coward who did nothing. It is easy for armchair quarterbacks who weren't there to presume that it would have been easy to stop the machine that was Fascism. Many people tried. Apparently, Gerstein was one of them. Many Germans tried to work within the system, and console themselves with the lives they were able to save - even Mengele, who actually patted himself on the back for the "experiments" that saved Jews from the gas chamber, and the people he directed out of the death line. Germans who had access to food, clothing, shelter, blankets were able to share them if they were inclined to. Germans who had access to nothing had nothing to share.

Another powerful scene was the scene where the Zyklon-B had become diluted thanks to Gerstein's attempt to make it unusable. The Camp officials decided to use it anyway. Kapos who were working the ovens complained that they were throwing living bodies into the ovens who had not yet died. For their complaints, they were immediately shot.

People in Hitler's Germany knew that was the price to be paid for dissidence. You obeyed authority or you died. Don't forget that the Prussians were a people who invented the public school system that created a people incapable of questioning authority. The very system all public schools are based upon today.

Gerstein was in a no-win situation. The movie raises the question, but gives us no answers. It is important that we all consider the question, and where each of us would draw the line. We may confront that decision sooner than we think.Scapegoat: The Jews, Israel, and Women's Liberation

"Amen" certainly ranks with the triad of WWII epics in recent years,"Schindler's List," "Saving Private Ryan," and "Life Is Beautiful." It is not that the film has less bang than its distinguished companions, it still has lasting reverberation. Its sweep is wider than the others, yet the brushstroke of a master storyteller stays meticulously detailed. Its heroes come out of the background quietly, yet with considerable fervor; one from the opulent, spiritual citadel, the other right from the jackals of hideousness. With building suspense the ultimate horror is that the film cannot answer: why did the Vatican aid the Nazi criminals and not the Jews? The telling of this drama has no false note, balancing respect for the Holy See and a paucity of humanity(skepticism)in the SS ranks. For once, there were good Germans, but bad earthly representatives of Christ. Where "Life Is Beautiful" lifts into transcendent philosophy, "Amen" hurls the wine of hypocrisy into the Papal leadership with sobering justification.

5 out of 5 stars A great movie on a grave topic.......2006-07-18

This movie explores the theme of collective guilt in the Holocaust by focusing on two individuals who stand out of their collectivity, SS officer Kurt Gerstein (Ulrich Tukur) and Catholic priest Riccardo Fontana (Mathieu Kassovitz).

A chemist by profession, Gerstein supplies zyklon B gas for the gas chambers of the death camps, but tries to alert the allies of the horror in which he is a willing participant. Hard to believe, but allegedly based on fact. A priest by vocation, Fontana tries to use his family contacts to alert the Pope.

Neither the SS officer nor the Catholic priest succeed. The Allies ignore the nazi. The Pope ignores the priest. The cowardly officer kills himself. The brave priest martyrs himself by boarding an Aushwitz-bound train.

Based on the movie's reconstruction, SS officer Gerstein was a coward and guilty through and through of high-level complicity in a Genocide. He would no doubt have received a heavy sentence after the war, and deservedly so.

This SS officer deserves no sympathy. The authors have therefore thrown in a few Faustian baits for those who need the idea of the good nazi.

The success of Schindler's Ark/List demonstrates the existence of a need for a belief in the good nazi. Here we have a would-be good nazi. He would like to be good, but he is so cowardly that he fails in his attempt to do good through the courage of others. In this sense, SS Gerstein is more interesting, dramatically speaking, than Schindler. He is a total loser and, in this, immensely dramatic. By Hollywood standard, not quite the ticket.

Catholic priest Fontana was a good guy who martyred himself in total despair. He is a modern version of Jesus, who died to expiate humanity's guilt. Fontana is a composite of several real-life catholic martyrs. The list of Catholic victims under the nazis is a long one, especially among the Poles. Not quite as long as the list of Jewish victims though. The complicit silence of the Catholic Church is well documented, but unfortunately not well publicized and occasionally denied.

If I dared to be controversial, I might write that Amen does to the Catholic community what Shindler's List did to the nazi community.

The greatest merit of a movie like Amen is to publicize Pope Pius 12's guilty silence while not, perhaps, alienating the entire Catholic community.

I also wish to add that Mathieu Kassovitz does an outstanding job as the Catholic priest. Another reader suggested otherwise. I have seen young Catholic priests in the flesh, and I believe Mathieu Kassovitz is perfect, a wonderful actor.

Great actors. True story. Great movie.

5 out of 5 stars Turning a Blind Eye to the Truth.......2006-05-12

This is the story of German SS Officer Kurt Gerstine and his efforts to inform the world of the mass extermination of the Jews of Europe. The film has some historical inaccuracies as far as the events that really took place,(Zyklon B was only used at Auschwitz-Birkenau, and Majdanek) but these shortcomings are easily forgiven just to have this story finally be told. Gerstines' actual written report about the gassing of a convoy of Jews in the Belzec extermination camp, using carbon monoxide chambers, remains one of the most horrifying documents ever to appear in print. In fact, one of the most disturbing aspects of this movie is the realization that there were thousands of people who devoted much of their time and effort to create a method of killing thousands of people at a time in mere hours, and then worked to streamline that process of mass murder to an industrial level. Through trial and error, they would, at Auschwitz-Birkenau, actually reach the point of being able to kill and destroy the remains of over 6000 people in just a few hours. Since the film at least tries to tell Gerstines' story, and makes it clear that at least one Nazi officer was truly haunted by the events taking place is a single fact, that alone, makes it worth the purchase. To learn that someone from the inside had the courage to attempt to inform the world shows us that not all Nazi's were cold blooded killers. The real villians in this story are those who were in positions of power, who, after being informed through first hand accounts, then said and did nothing, thereby allowing the mass murders to continue. To be a knowledgeable, but silent bystander of such horrific events has, through hindsight, cast a hugh blanket of guilt over those who found themselves in this very position. However, it is this kind of silence, and your reaction to it, that actually touches at the very heart of the story. It makes you ask yourself the question, "What would I do in such a situation"? It also reminds us that there were people at the time, often acting alone, who stepped up and answered this moral imparative through heroic actions, rather than stopping at mere words. After seeing this film, you'll never look at a train made up of boxcars in the same way again. They send chills down your back every time one passes in the movie, and they pass with alarming frequency as the film progresses.

All in all, it's an excellent movie about a little known chapter in the history of the Holocaust. This may well be the only time Gerstines' story will ever be told in film.

5 out of 5 stars The would-be whistleblower of the Holocaust.......2006-02-20

Amen. got an indifferent response from critics and box-office alike, but its easily Costa-Gavras' best film in a couple of decades. While it doesn't have is the rough and raw anger of his early classics, or the emotional weight of Missing, it's a compelling tale well told. Based on the true story of a German chemist and devout Catholic promoted to the SS who, on finding out what use the chemicals he inspected are really put to, tried to make the existence of the Nazi extermination policy known in the hopes of stopping it (not without precedent: as the film shows, the Catholic Church and public outrage did prevent the earlier extermination program for the mentally ill). Unfortunately for the would-be whistleblower, no-one wanted to know: they either didn't care or didn't believe the sheer enormity of the numbers of victims.

Ulrich Tukur is impressive in the lead, portraying the moral outrage and frustrated urgency without resorting to theatrics, though Matthieu Kassovitz's priest (a composite of several characters) is less convincing despite his best efforts. The most interesting character, however, is Ulrich Muhe's `Doctor,' a fellow SS officer unconvinced by the Nazi rhetoric but more than morally ambivalent and pragmatic enough to go along with his `unsophisticated' colleagues. He's a constantly unnerving presence because of his honesty and his playfulness: you're never quite sure what his position is, although you never doubt his own certainty in himself.

Much was made at the time of release at the finger pointed at the Catholic Church for their complicity by silence in the Holocaust, but the film doesn't limit its frustration to the Church - the Allies are equally culpable of pragmatic neglect. The script is an impressively constructed, with early scenes flowing effortlessly into each other as they demolish the concept that ordinary Germans were powerless to resist, establishing a moral framework for the drama that follows. The resolution of Kassovitz's character veers into cliché and the enormity of the main character's loss of faith is slightly taken for granted at the end (his final action is a total rejection of the fundamental principles of Catholicism that fuel his doomed efforts), but it's nonetheless a powerful movie that deserves to be better known.

4 out of 5 stars Only por sensitve people!.......2007-06-13

Pretty Argentine film with the usually cool Adrian Suar playing a lonely man, isolated, full of complexes... until beautiful Leticia Bredice comes back...
Good for latin cinema lovers, Argentine movie fans, sensitive Spaniards. I really enjoyed it!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting culturally and psychotherapeutically, if a bit uneven as a story.......2007-05-13

This is a nice cultural study of a cross section of upper middle class porteño society and of the symptoms of depression--and in the case of Leticia Brédice's character--personality disorder. It's a bit uneven as a drama, but does offer some good grist for the psychotherapy technique mill as we see the psychologist working with the main male character perform a number of provocative therapeutic techniques. (I happen to think it's too heavy on the confrontation and poorly performed when using paradox, but that's my opinion).
The drama is a bit uneven, though, and so unless you're really into the cultural, linguistic and psychotherapeutic aspects of the movie, which are rich, you might be let down.

i watched this movie last night, first in all spanish without subtitles (even tho my spanish is horrible), then later with subtitles. you could do nothing but listen to it, and still see the beauty that exists in this film. i loved watching the story of the 2 characters unfold, and all the people around him. going thru the story, my mind played out dozens of reasons for his anger, countless suggestions as to why things happened the way they did.

watching this movie was a gift. i highly recomend it to any person who wants to see (or hear!) a story of immense beauty, love, loss, and life.

5 out of 5 stars American tourists in France...need I say more?.......2007-05-19

Once Upon a Crime is one of the great comedic crime capers of the 1980's and early 1990's. The cast is comprised of many of the comedy heavyweights of the era, the plot is both plausible and silly, and twists abound.

The crime is the murder of rich, elderly Monte Carlo resident Madame Van Dugen. A cast of Americans get mixed up in the plot and all become suspects under the intense scrutiny of the police inspector, played by Giancarlo Giannini. Sean Young plays a jilted lover trying to make it on her own in Rome. Richard Lewis is an unemployed actor who is reluctantly paired with Young when they find Madame Van Dugen's missing dachshund, Napoleon. John Candy is a gambling addict willing to pay thousands for the dog as a present to his wife. Jim Belushi and Cybill Shepard play an unhappily married couple visiting Europe for business and pleasure.

George Hamilton is priceless as the local gigolo. Throughout the movie, the American tourists stumble over themselves, telling lies for no reason and digging themselves deeper in a hole with the French police inspector. In a stunning climax, the inspector gathers them all in one room and gets them to expose the truth about the night Madame Van Dugen was murdered.

Once Upon a Crime is a delicious comedy full of laughs. The movie should be celebrated for the cast performances and its homage to classic European crime capers.

5 out of 5 stars Among the Best Comedies!.......2007-02-10

This is one of the best comedies I've ever seen, and a personal favorite of mine.

The movie revolves around a series of events in France among a few American tourists. The French police are investigating a murder, and one American (James Belushi), finds his suitcase stuffed with the dead body. Each of the tourists becomes a suspect in the eyes of the incompetent French police, leading to hilarious situations. The mystery-cum-comedy works brilliantly!

Excellent comedy, highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad crime comedy.......2006-10-16

This is light bouncy fare, but that doesn't mean it's no good. In fact, it's funny and even has some romance in it. Only reason there's three stars here is because it's so light and frothy. But the actors all do a fine job and this being Eugene Levy's directorial debut (1992), give the man some credit. (He also shows up in the film as a sneering casino cashier).

On hand for the highjinks (or is that hijinks? I never did know) are John Candy, Jim Belushi, Cybill Sheperd, Sean Young, Richard Lewis (with his trademark shrugging brand of hilarious comedy), Giancarlo Giannini, and George Hamilton as, of course, the "tan guy". Some bits are definitely funnier than others, but overall this is a nifty romp with some real giggles and a couple of guffaws. In Rome, a dead body is discovered in a garage by an unemployed actor (Lewis) and a not-too-well-off tourist (Young) and soon the local polizia link the murder as well to Belushi and Sheperd, as well as Candy.

Pivotal in these shenanigans is Napoleon the dachshund. But hey, don't take my word for it. See it for yourself. The script is thankfully not stupid at all and everybody has fun with it.

Nicely done.

4 out of 5 stars Once Upon A Crime there was a hilarious, laugh-a-minute mystery..........2005-08-28

The film Once Upon a Crime is a classic comedy/crime film with its brilliant cast, fantastic script and plot. The performances are just so hilarious and the intertwining storylines of characters is so cleverly done, you'll laugh all the way to the twisted ending. It is a great "Who Done it?" that manages to hit all the right places and keep you guessing until the end. The features are a behind-the-scenes featurette and the film Trailer, and it is all very cool. If you haven't seen this film yet then don't waste any time and see for yourself just how good this is.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable,.......2003-11-10

I've been eagerly awaiting word that this was to be released on DVD...what a cast! John Candy, Jimmy Belushi, Cybill Shepherd, Sean Young, Richard Lewis, George Hamilton (his best comedy role), the great Giancarlo Giannini, even a humorous turn by the director, Eugene Levy (Candy's buddy from SCTV) as a casino cage manager! This one harkens back to the screwball comedies of the forties, and is a real joy. It's a comedic crime caper that unfolds in romantic Rome and exciting Monte Carlo, with loveable characters scrambling to avoid suspicion and arrest by the suitably weighted (yet hilarious) Giannini as "Inspector Bonnard"...and who'd have thought Richard Lewis would hold his own as Sean Young's love interest? As a feuding American couple, Shepherd & Belushi are priceless, as they rediscover their love, by discovering they have larceny in their hearts; and in the end, we finally learn who the real culprits are in one of those "gather all the suspects together in one room and reveal the murderer" scenes (always fun!)...can't tell from the info, but the DVD's "extras" will be probably be few, the picture and sound will be good to very good (MGM puts out good transfers, normally), but unfortunately, it looks like this small gem is not going to get the widescreen treatment it deserves...why a studio EVER releases anything in Pan & Scan is beyond me. But hey, at least it's available, and that's great news for those of us who love this film...and those of you who will now have the joy of discovering it!

5 out of 5 stars urban sainthood.......2007-06-14

In this documentary director David Peterson takes us to World Mission for Christ Church International, a tiny black Pentecostal storefront church a few blocks from the nation's capitol. I think I counted four pews in the sanctuary. But the thirty or so parishioners have followed the advice of a sign on the wall: "keep the fire burning." They take up offerings for each other to fix a car, and pass out free food and clothing to the neighborhood. The film follows the stories of three people in particular. Darlene is a single mother raising eight kids and studying at night to become a nursing assistant. David works in the church's homeless shelter and wants to buy a house. Ceodtis, "Big C," is a street singer who wants to cut his first gospel CD with his ten-year old son, and who wants to find out who murdered his son. You'll have to watch the film to learn their fates. The dignity, resilience and joy of these urban saints reminded me of Hebrews 11:38, "people of whom the world is not worthy." Director Peterson never prompts his subjects, and there is no narrative voice over; he simply lets these people tell their own stories in their own words. It is a story worth seeing.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2007-01-16

I'll echo exactly what the previous 2 reviewers wrote, this film is amazing, unbelievable, almost beyond words. Here is a church, probably minutes away from our White House and our Congress (these who are supposed to be taking care of their neighborhood, which would be the whole, United States.) Anyway,

The church is filled with people who support each other, and improve their neighborhood with knowledge, job training, peaceful demonstrations, free healthcare, and much more. The church seems to me, to be exactly what a church is meant to be.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic movie about faith in real life!.......2006-01-26

I saw this film at Sundance two years ago and desperately wanted a copy of it right away. I am delighted to have found it now on Amazon. It is not only a riveting portrait of faith lived out in the context of very difficult situations, it is also an important corrective to the treacly, mass-marketed, individualistic piety that dominates much of what is labeled "Christian" nowadays. I wept through much of it, but they were good tears -- tears of joy.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely lifechanging .......2005-04-01

I am a somewhat cynical person; however, after seeing this film I was absolutely blown away. It affirms what I have known for years, but some had forgotten, that the best way to serve God is to serve your fellow man. Watching the devotion to others and to God that the people in this film exhibit under very trying circumstances has caused me to recommit myself to the cause. I highly recommend this film to those who, like myself, heartily dislike the standard vanilla "Christian" fare usually presented in the mainstream, but still would like to be able to view inspirational type films that relate this strongly to the real world. The joy that these people exhibit in worship and in daily life, set against the backdrop of addicts, gangs, and urban decay, makes me ashamed that I've not been more thankfull for where I am, and how little I've given back. If I could, i would give it 10 stars....
