The intense soundtrack of Boiler Room is a fitting underscore for this movie, which pulses with the vigor of young, rich, amoral men wreaking havoc. This is not the antisocietal havoc of Fight Club, but the more deliberate mayhem that comes from greed run amok. The testosterone-junkie brokers of J.T. Marlin (the only female in the office is Abby, the receptionist and love interest, played by Nia Long) are out to make the sale, and whether that sale is legal or ethical doesn't matter.

Seth Davis (Giovanni Ribisi) is a 19-year-old college dropout who strives for approval from his father (Ron Rifkin), a judge who is horrified that his son operates a 24-hour illicit casino. When an old friend visits the casino with a fellow broker, Davis is impressed by their wads of money and yellow Ferrari, and decides to join the firm. In no time he's making sales and settling into the groove of the office and all the after-hours perks, but the dream fades when Davis discovers the scam that is making all of the brokers wealthy beyond their dreams.

Borrowing heavily from Wall Street and Glengarry Glen Ross, Boiler Room is at its best when dealing with matters of money, and powerful scenes of Davis learning to be a "closer" showcase the significant talent of Ribisi, Nicky Katt, and Vin Diesel. The movie flounders when developing the relationship between Davis and his father, becoming sentimental and trite. However, as a fable of modern society and a nostalgic vehicle about the days of yuppies past, Boiler Room is right on the money. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars Triple X.......2007-06-02

Vin Deisel wimps out in this movie. At the end when the FBI is gonna raid the office he should kick butt!! He doesn't, so it sucks. The best scene is where the Boss tells one of the Stockbrokers that he can't sit down ever again! He has to stand until he makes a sale hahaha. Ben Affleck isn't as good as Alec Baldwin in Glen Gary GlenRoss. He tries to be, but can't. It just isn't good enough of a performance to equal Mr. Baldwin's. Vin Deisel should shoot people with machine guns in the film. He should shoot Affleck hahaha. Go Triple X!!

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2007-05-14

I spent some time in the car business at one point in my life and I developed an appreciation for taking what is yours and making it mine. With that said, if you liked Wall Street and Rouge Trader, then this 90's movie with a similiar storyline should find its way into your collection. For the price, you can't really go wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but cannot overcome "Wall Street".......2006-07-20

Both "Wall Street" and "Boiler Room" have the same moral outline. In both movies, young, ambitious, and smart individuals are looking to make an enormous amount of money in the quickest time possible. Both are doing it on the stock market. Both want to make their fathers proud, and both quickly learn that the only way to get the fast "wall street" money is to get it illegally. Once they realize they are committing crimes, they do it anyway. Then, of course, comes a braking point. Both movies open with shots of New-York city. Only in the "Boiler Room", the soundtrack is rap music. That shows us the evolution of time since "Wall Street" came out. Well, the tastes in music changed, that's for sure, but no change occurred in human nature. "Greed is good", said Gordon Gekko. Greed still reigns supreme in "Boiler Room".

The love story does not end anywhere in "Boiler Room". In this story, the love interest is not a whore and does not like him for the money. And she really needs the job. In this movie, she is a positive character, whereas in "Wall Street", the love interest is a negative character.

Also, in both movies, we do not see the main characters really enjoying their new found wealth. Yeah, Bud Fox did buy a nice apartment, but we never see him free of worry, free of self-doubt and guilt. The same applies for Seth.

Vin Diesel, an excellent actor, ads flavor to the movie, along with Jamie Kennedy and a bunch of other young actors trying to prove themselves. Ben Affleck is in the movie too, although you only see him once or twice and the movie could have gone on without him. That's too bad. I don't know why he agreed to such a mediocre part.

Overall, an enjoyable, easy to follow movie. Not as glamorous, not as flashy, but gets the point across. However, not able to surpass "Wall Street".

4 out of 5 stars Boiler Room May Boil Your Nerves.......2006-07-10

Some folks might rent or buy this DVD for its well known names, but Vin Disel and Ben Afflec play very small roles It is Giovanni Ribsi that shines. He plays a young college drop out, who turns to an in-house, illegal gambling den to help him release his inner rage and built up anxieties towards his demanding father.

(SPOILERS)
But it is his discovery of a Boiler Room operation hawking non-existent stocks and bonds for non-existent companies that really steers this movie.

Fantastic interactions between the main character, and Vin Disel character. I appreciated the relationship beteen Giovanni and the secretary character, but I felt it was under-developed and weak. Could have been left out, or developed better.

I saw this one in the theater, and now own on DVD, and would recommend it to any Pre-MBA student, or Wall Street wannabe. It is great training.

This movie gives you the chills, it reminds you of the all-time classic ''Wall-Street'' with Bud Fox & Gordon Gecko. Only this time it is played by Seth Davis as Bud Fox. Boiler Room has an all-star cast with Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel, Nia Long, & Ben Affleck... If you haven't seen this film, you are missing out, it is unforgettable and it is one of those keeper DVD's to have in your collection. - Chad Castorina

Inspired by creator Michael Crichton's experiences as a medical student in a hospital emergency room, ER quickly became one of the most compelling shows of the 1990s, each episode a whirlwind of intense and involving drama, gritty realism, and offbeat humor. Heading the staff at the inner-city Chicago hospital is Mark Greene (Anthony Edwards), a doctor so good at providing care to the downtrodden, helpless, or just plain quirky patients that his career blossoms even as his personal life crumbles. Greene is the soul of the cast, but the heart is Julianna Margulies's nurse Carol Hathaway. Her character was intended only for the pilot episode, but she ended up capturing viewers with her palpable empathy for patients and her troublesome romance with womanizing pediatrician Doug Ross (George Clooney). The rest of the central cast consisted of compassionate Susan Lewis (Sherry Stringfield), Peter Benton (Eriq Lasalle), whose prodigious talent nearly matches his ambition, and his fresh-faced student, John Carter (Noah Wyle). Other key characters included ER heads Morgenstern and Swift (William H. Macy and Michael Ironside, respectively), overachieving student Deb (Ming Na), who returned later in the show's run, attending physician Angela Hicks (CCH Pounder), and physical therapist Jeanie Boulet (Gloria Rueben).

The remarkably strong first season showed off its sharp ensemble cast through a variety of compelling story lines both personal (Carter's conflicts with Benton, Lewis's struggles with her no-account sister, Chloe, played by Kathleen Wilhoite) and professional (a holiday blizzard and especially the harrowing tale of a pregnancy gone bad, "Love's Labor Lost," which won five Emmy Awards). When Carter is pondering whether his future includes the ER, Green jokes, "It's not bad: Stress, late nights, hard work, no pay--it's hard to beat." It's hard to imagine people choosing to work under those conditions, but they do, and in the process these very human people perform superhuman feats as they face life and death as part of their daily jobs.

DVD features are fairly generous for a TV series box. There are two commentary tracks on the pilot episode, including one by Crichton, and crew commentaries on "Sleepless in Chicago" and "Love's Labor Lost." A new 39-minute documentary discusses the show's genesis, casting, and the "Chicago hospital drama smackdown" with Chicago Hope through interviews with Crichton, executive producer Steven Spielberg, other crew members, and the principal cast members other than Eriq LaSalle. Also included are a very watchable featurette on the show's realism (ever wonder why Ross is always looking down?) and another on post-production, a list of characters (including patients by episode, but why no actor credits?), three minor deleted scenes, outtakes, and a glossary of frequently used medical terms. Particularly notable is that the episodes are shown in anamorphic widescreen. ER was one of the first network shows broadcast in widescreen, but that was years after these episodes, which are shown in widescreen for the first time. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars ER has a structure that sets it up for the long-term.......2007-03-23

Some TV shows have a structure such that you can tell almost from the beginning how long the show has to live. As much as I love "Scrubs", that show is built around a few core characters, and once their stories are played out, that will pretty much be the end of that show. "Cheers" basically had a double length of life due to the fact it was actually two shows instead of one - the first 5 seasons with Diane and the last 6 seasons with Rebecca as the female lead. "ER" is different. It has a large cast of constantly revolving characters, and the storylines will always be there as long as there is controversy in medicine to merge with the personal drama. Early in ER's history, things were different. George Clooney's character, Doug Ross, was really the star of the show, although they did spread the stories around so that there was quite a bit of focus on the other characters too. This was a successful formula, but once Clooney became a star and a heartthrob he quickly tired of television and longed for the big screen. Thus, starting in season four, he is absent more and more as he goes off to make action films and the show began to look like it was going to suffer from "Welcome Back Kotter" syndrome, where John Travolta's success on the silver screen killed that show. After Clooney actually did formally exit stage left, the show changed the formula to its current one of spreading the action around with nobody in particular having the spotlight. I guess my point with all of this is, with ER already in its thirteenth season, this show could easily go on for years. The bundles of ER seasons are overpriced, so collecting this show season by season is probably your best bet. It's interesting to look at how season one was set up and look at the show today and see how it still holds up over time. At least, that is my humble opinion.

it was a gift and the person who received it stated it was excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Where it all began!.......2007-01-16

watch it from the beginning - get the backstory on the original cast....everyone is still just a little uncomfortable in their characters' skin; its really funny to watch. don't miss this!

This item was much cheaper on Amazon than in the stores, even after shipping. I gave this item as a gift, but as far as I know there were no problems with it!

5 out of 5 stars A great show!.......2007-01-12

ER has been one of my favorite shows, so when I saw it at such a great price here at amazon I had to buy it. It's a medical drama with some great characters, story lines, and everything else. Watch it, you won't be sorry.

Amazon.com essential video

When it comes to long-awaited treats like The Marx Brothers Collection, you can never get too much of a good thing. These seven comedies can't compare to the sheer lunacy of the five classics (The Cocoanuts, Animal Crackers, Monkey Business, Horse Feathers, and Duck Soup) that the Marx Bros. made for Paramount between 1929 and 1933 (available in The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection), but when uber-producer Irving Thalberg signed Groucho, Harpo, and Chico to an MGM contract in 1935 (by which time sibling costar Zeppo had become the team's off-screen manager), he knew just how to cure their box-office blues. As a result, A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races were critical and commercial hits, lavishly produced according to the "Tiffany" studio's golden-age formula of glamorous set pieces and musical numbers combined with sensible plots that smoothly integrated snappy, well-written Marxian antics. Opera is the jewel of this set, with timeless scenes (the Stateroom, the Groucho-Chico contract negotiation, etc.) that rank among the greatest bits of silver-screen comedy... not to mention Groucho's flirtatious insults at Margaret Dumont's upper-crust expense.

A Day at the Races deserves near-equal acclaim ("Get-a your tootsie-fruitsie ice cream!"), but Thalberg's death in 1937 dealt a devastating blow, and the Marxes suffered from studio indifference, resulting in a succession of comedies that are timelessly enjoyable even as they fall prey to diminishing returns. By the time they made Go West and The Big Store, the Marxes were out of their element, and a few of the musical interludes indulge racial stereotypes that were common in the studio era. Despite this, these movies remain fresh and frantic, and Warner Bros. (holder of the RKO and MGM libraries) has done a marvelous job of packaging The Marx Brothers Collection to nostalgically approximate the filmgoing experience of the 1930s and '40s, with vintage shorts (Our Gang, Robert Benchley comedies, MGM cartoons, etc.) from the time of each feature's original release. Archival materials are slim but worthwhile (especially Groucho's 1961 interview with TV talk-show host Hy Gardner), and while Glenn Mitchell's commentary on Races is sparse and superficial, Leonard Maltin brings his usual superfan's enthusiasm and encyclopedic knowledge to bear on a full-length Opera commentary track. The new documentaries are somewhat redundant, but essential viewing for Marx Bros. neophytes. With all seven films presented in pristine condition, this is definitely a Marx Brothers Collection worth having. --Jeff Shannon

Description

This set includes seven of only thirteen Marx Brothers films ever made! Collection includes: "A Night at the Opera" (1935) - The Marx Brothers turn Mrs. Claypool's opera into chaos in their efforts to help two young hopefuls get a break. It contains the famous scene where Groucho, Chico and Harpo cram a ship's stateroom with wall-to-wall people, gags, one-liners, musical riffs and two hard-boiled eggs. "A Day at the Races" (1937) - Groucho stars as Hugo Z. Hackenbush, a horse veterinarian dispensing horse pills and quips with equal glee. Chico selling racing tips, Harpo destroying a piano to turn it into a harp and favorite foil actress Margaret Dumont make this thoroughbred comedy wall-to-wall hilarity. "A Night in Casablanca" (1946) - This parody of the Bogart/Bergman 1943 classic features the Nazis vs. the "nutsies" as the Marx Brothers foil Axis criminals when they find stolen jewels and paintings Nazis have hidden in a hotel. "Room Service"/"At the Circus" - These two films are combined on one disc to provide double doses of laughter. In "Room Service" (1938), Lucille Ball and Ann Miller provide comic co-star support while the Marx Brothers play producers trying to keep their show above water and a hotel room over their head. In "At the Circus" (1939) Groucho stars as professional shyster lawyer J. Cheever Loophole in the middle of big-top bedlam as the boys try to save the circus and look to Margaret Dumont for the money to do so. Groucho sings one of his famous songs, "Lydia the Tattooed Lady." "Go West"/"The Big Store" - Another Marx Brothers twin bill makes this a hilarious comedy "two-fer." In the first, the Marxmen "Go West" (1940) to the land of outlaws and Indians where the fun never stops and where they outwit a land grabber. In "The Big Store" (1941), Groucho plays Attorney Wolf J. Flywheel who with sidekick Wacky (Harpo) and bodyguard Ravelli (Chico) are investigating the shady dealings of a crooked department store owner. Bonus extras include commentary by Leonard Maltin.

5 out of 5 stars An honest to goodness classic comedy!!!!!!.......2007-06-14

If you want a good clean entertainment and a good laugh, and a classic fun, then the Marx Brothers are for you.

5 out of 5 stars Classics.......2007-05-24

By today's standards, these films are fairly slow-paced in places. Even some of the jokes seem lame in contrast to today's vulgarity. But if you've never seen the Marx Bros at the top of their game, you've gotta see this collection. Fast forward through the occasional sappy romantic bits if you must. Savor the interaction between Harpo and Chico and Groucho. I promise you'll laugh.

5 out of 5 stars still laughing.......2007-05-13

The best of the Marx Brothers comes alive into our living room . I laughed when I was a kid , and now when my Grandchildren come over , they want to watch the Marx Brothers, and I still laugh at their satire . It's as funny now as it was back in my younger years . I'm glad my Grandchildren love them , and I hope their Grandchildren love the Marx Brothers also . It's hard to find good clean entertainment now days , and these movies are classics . I recommend the Marx Brothers for anyone who needs a laugh , and an afternoon for good entertainment .

5 out of 5 stars The Marvelous Marx Brothers Collection!.......2007-03-31

This collection showcases some of the Marx Brothers' biggest film hits. Kitty Carlisle (who was a guest on television's "What's My Line?" in the 1960s) does her own operatic singing in "A Night at the Opera." She is interviewed, with Dom DeLuise and others, in a DVD featurette included in this collection, and talks about that wild, wonderful association with the Brothers. An interview with Groucho Marx reveals the true story of what happened in producer Irving Thalberg's office when he made the mistake of keeping the brothers waiting too long for scheduled meetings! These movies are classics and give today's "movies" more than a run for their money! Well worth ordering, viewing, and treasuring forever.

An effective exercise in "confined cinema," Panic Room is a finely crafted thriller that ultimately transcends the thinness of its premise. David Koepp's screenplay is basically Wait Until Dark on steroids, so director David Fincher (Seven, The Game) compensates with elaborate CGI-assisted camera moves, jazzing up his visuals while a relocated New York divorcée (Jodie Foster) and her daughter (Kristen Stewart) fight for their lives against a trio of tenacious burglars (Jared Leto, Forest Whitaker, Dwight Yoakam) in their new Manhattan townhouse. They're safe in a customized, impenetrable "panic room," but the burglars want what's in the room's safe, so mother and daughter (and Koepp and Fincher) must find clever ways to turn the tables and persevere. Suspense and intelligence are admirably maintained, with Foster (who replaced the then-injured Nicole Kidman) riffing on her Silence of the Lambs resourcefulness. It's not as viscerally satisfying as Fincher's previous thrillers, but Panic Room definitely holds your attention. --Jeff Shannon

Jodie Foster is great again! This movie will keep you glued. Great chilling and suspenseful.

    4 out of 5 stars PANIC INDEED!.......2007-03-25

A very tense thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat through out! It does go a little over board towards the end,but it is still a first rate thriller. The superbit version I have, did not impress me any more or less than a standard DVD release.

4 out of 5 stars A lesson in home construction.......2007-03-09

The next time you remodel or build a new room or home, add this to your plans. As the threat of terrorism increases those old 1950s bomb shelters are in vogue. Use this movie as a model. A lot of valuable information here.

    5 out of 5 stars WTFis a panic room?.......2007-01-07

There was a lot of negative hype about this movie, so I decided to sit down, watch it and set the record straight. So, I gather up the usual movie watching essentials, (popcorn, pizza, shinerbock, green tea, Hershey bars, cornnuts, barbeque, French onion, cheddar, salt and vinegar flavored potato chips, a slab of ribs, and some carrots and celery stick, so I won't get fat) and proceed to watch the movie. From the moment the movie started...I could tell it was going to be interesting. I was very right. The story starts out with a woman and her daughter trying to find a house. They find this humongous house with a {you'll never guess} panic room in it. During their first night...the house gets broken into. From that moment on...you will be on the edge of your seat. The cinematography was wonderfully done. It was full of suspense that kept you on the verge of your chair. Amen.
So that's about it. Just to recap. You like movies? You like houses? You like chicks? Oh, hell, you like men??? Well, all of these are a factor in this movie, so watch and enjoy. If you don't like it, you can get the F#@K out!

"Blue's Room: Knights of The Snack Table" is the first-ever DVD release featuring the all-new "Blue's Room" with Sprinkles and Joe on-board as regular characters. It contains two episodes of it, as well as two episodes of "Blue's Clues."

The flagship episode, "Knights of the Snack Table," is a DVD-premiere and as of the writing of this review, has not been seen seen on Nick Jr. Blue and her little brother Sprinkles are playing knights. Joe is a king and he's lost his four dragons. He needs Blue, Sprinkles and our help to find them. He presents us with a shield (which can be seen on the DVD cover art) containing the four dragons. Along the way, we play various games and learn many things to help Joe find his dragons. The other "Blue's Room" episode is the premiere of the new episodes, "Blue's Farm Play Date." Joe is Farmer Joe MacDonald this time and he needs help taking care of animals. This episode teaches types of animals, counting, and more.

If you or your kids don't like "Blue's Room" (even with the wonderful additions of Joe and Sprinkles), there are also two "Blue's Clues" episodes to be found on this DVD. Both of them feature Joe. The first is "The Boat Float," in which the characters create their own boats to sail. Viewers learn about what causes boats to sink and how to keep them floating, as well as how different types of boats move. The other episode is "The Scavenger Hunt." Blue and Magenta put together a scavenger hunt. As we help Joe find items that are on the scavenger hunt list, they ultimately come together to create clues.

This DVD includes a special bonus --- a sneak-peek at the "Save the Blowfish! episode from the first-ever "Wonder Pets!" DVD coming in April. It's a nice sneak-peek that will please fans of this wonderful new addition to Nick Jr.'s lineup.

Italian filmmaker Nanni Moretti's signature talent for the overheard, unexpected, and happened-upon detail lends The Son's Room, the story of a grieving middle-class family, the unnerving quality of an unwanted surprise. Giovanni (Moretti) is a successful psychoanalyst whose family life is remarkably placid and enviously intimate: his beautiful wife (Laura Morante) and two intelligent, attractive teenage children are unafraid of their emotions. When his son, Andrea (Giuseppe Sanfelice), drowns in a diving accident, Giovanni is driven to suspend his practice and unintentionally betray his patients as he is haunted by what small choice he might have made in order to avert his son's death. Moretti, more widely known for his comedies, masterfully recreates how seemingly trivial things can take on such importance in the aftermath of tragedy. The intricacies of remembering are traced with such a light touch that the cumulative impact of the film is far greater than its many well-chosen details. Winner of the Palme d'Or (highest honor) at the Cannes International Film Festival, The Son's Room, which refuses melodrama at every step, is a deeply affecting portrait of familial love and the ritual of grieving. --Fionn Meade

      Description

Declared Best Picture at the Cannes Film Festival, this universally touching film tells the unforgettable story of a man facing the greatest challenge of his life. Giovanni is a psychoanalyst who thought he had all the answers. In contrast to the worries and neuroses of his patients, Giovanni's reassuringly calm existence revolves around the security of his loving family and the comfort of his daily routines. So when an unthinkable tragedy hits his home and turns his life upside down, he must somehow summon the courage to deal with his own grief while giving strength to those who need him most. Released to overwhelming critical acclaim, this ultimately uplifting emotional journey has drawn praise for its subtle realism and remarkable power!

5 out of 5 stars The Capriciousness of Life.......2006-08-10

Rarely has a film drawn me in so deeply that I remain affected days after I viewed it. "The Son's Room" is profound in its ability to create its moods especially in the latter half of the film. I feel that the director's presentation of this happy family, in the film's first half, is what allowed me to feel the result of an impending tragedy so personally. I kept thinking that I wanted everything to go back to the way it was before. I shared their grief as if it was my own.
I also applaud the presentation of an Italian society which is unlike the comic opera Italian experience presented in American films over the past decades going back to the silent era.
The film may not affect you as deeply as it affected me, but I highly recommend the absorbing story that is presented.

1 out of 5 stars Based on a true story.......2006-03-05

I was surprised at the ending of this film that I didn't see the above caption at the beginning of the film. This movie to me was comparable to American television movies where something terrible happens to a family and how they cope with it. It was an Italian film, but on the whole it was of the same viewing quality as these movies, maybe a little less slick in appearance.

Also some of the scenes were so banal. Like just before the boy drowns a sense of danger is created by the girl on the moped kicking one of her friends on another moped, the close passing of a truck as the father drives to his patient etc. Or when the boys' casket is nailed shut and is screwed shut interchanged with images of the mourning father. How fat can you lay it on?

Especially the beginning of the movie is excruciating. A very one-dimensional portrait of the family, if they were black, they would be called the Huxtables. This is of course to offset the second part of the movie with the first. First routine and happiness, the second chaos and sadness.

The above are just some things I noticed about the movie which didn't make sense to me. I won't even go into the storyline which is rather unplausible at some points even though it is completely predictable. What bothers me most though is that all of this must have been done on purpose, but why? The end result is a bland film which may have been made with a lot of care, but just doesn't come across. This is the first movie I have seen by this director. I have heard that his other movies are better. I hope so, because this film hasn't made a great impression on me.

4 out of 5 stars "Very little of life is completely under one's control".......2005-08-31

Happiness can be delicate. In just one swoop, it can stolen out from under you, just when you least expect it. The results can be often devastating - some can never recover. The family in the Italian film The Son's Room has found such happiness, but when tragedy suddenly strikes, they're engulfed in a whirlwind of grief and paralyzed with heartache.

Grief is perhaps the most tangled of human emotions, and the vagaries of sadness, love, and anger that comprise its essence are often very difficult to portray. Luckily, co-writer, director, and actor Nanni Moretti avoids all the usual clichés in this delicately nuanced and subtly acted film. The Son's Room is indeed a moving and weighty depiction of one family's attempts to heal after sudden death strikes them.

Moretti stars as Giovanni, a successful psychiatrist with a busy practice treating the assorted neurotics of the picture-perfect Northern Italian coastal town he and his family call home. Giovanni is a mild-mannered and kindly man, who has a sort of passive and submissive approach to living.

Giovanni also has a lovely family: he's happily married to gorgeous book publisher Paola (Laura Morante) and shares what he considers a close relationship with his teenaged daughter Irene (Jasmine Trinca) and son Andrea (Giuseppe Sanfelice).

He presides over his wife and two children with a kind of flaccid authority, enveloping them with the same deceptively passive doctoral concern with which he counsels his psychiatric patients. He supports, and heals, less by what he says than by what he doesn't say. He quietly coaches Andrea in soccer moves, while encouraging Irene to be more competitive at basketball.

Perhaps it's an ominous portent of what is to come, but the film opens as Andrea and his friends have been accused of stealing a valuable fossil from the school's Science department. Giovanni and Paola are surprised to find they entertaining the idea that their son may in fact be guilty as charged. However, no one takes the incident that seriously.

If this is the only drama that affects Giovanni's serene life, nothing prepares him for the sudden tragedy that occurs one sunny Sunday afternoon. Called away from home by a desperate client, Giovanni cancels his plans to go jogging with Andrea; and it's a fatal choice that haunts him for months to come.

The accident, when it happens, is so unexpected. The loss giving rise to sorrow, rage, tenderness, and the inexplicable feeling that hope is no longer possible. The family, emotionally fractured, is unable to continue on. Plunged into unimaginable grief, Giovanni attempts to carry on with his life, but bereft of his objectivity, he finds he's no longer able to function as an analyst.

The Son's Room, with it's subtle acting and its pensive, emotionally layered story, remains a startling testament to the delicate nuances of grief. And it's as though Moretti has invited the viewer to spy on a deeply personal event in the life of a very ordinary family. Like a fly on the wall we witness the sadness, the regret, the empty dinners and the overwhelming feeling of whether they could have done anything to stop the accident.

Moretti, whose eyes glitter with knowledge from within a bland, bearded, professorial face, gives a wonderful performance, as does the classy Morente as the beautiful, anguished Paola. While Giovanni wanders dazed through a theme park, numb to the grief, Paola fields a desire to talk about the absent child.

A savior for the family arrives in a letter addressed to the deceased, and when the writer appears on the family's doorstep, she offers the grace note that reminds them of the means by which happiness eventually repairs itself and the unavoidable fact that life goes on. There's no catharsis here, only a heartfelt exploration of what it means to grieve. Mike Leonard August 05.

      5 out of 5 stars Moving.......2004-08-06

Italian director and actor Nanni Moretti delivers a deeply moving meditation on the nature of grief and loss with "The Son's Room." Moretti plays Giovanni, a respected psychoanalyst, who leads a normal and happy life with his wife Paola and their two teenage children. But when Andrea, their son, suddenly dies in a diving accident, the family is forced to deal with this tragedy as best they can. It would be easy for the film to become so depressing and sad as to be unwatchable, but somehow that does not happen. The characters are so well drawn that, while you feel all their heartbreak, you know they will stay together and eventually find a way to deal with this. This is a beautiful film. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The Buddhist Way.......2004-06-27

Must say that I've been waiting for a film like this for a long time. Nothing fancy, just beautiful, elegant, and detailed. Most of the time I was not aware that I was watching a film. It was that real. The film may have a simple look, but the philosophy/attitude that helps the family to come through the crisis is not. The Buddhist ideas revealed in the film are not some new age bull but sincere and inspiring. And I find the ending extremely powerful yet soothing. This is a great film made by a filmmaker who knows the medium really, really well.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Forget About This Gem.............2003-01-27

A wonderful addition to any DVD collection. R.L. Stine, the man behind the "Goosebumps" legacy, has returned with this collection of tales from his "The Nightmare Room" series. This disc features four episodes from the television series. The episodes in question are "Camp Nowhere" (Parts 1 & 2), "Don't Forget Me" and "Full Moon Halloween." "Camp Nowhere" sees Russel, Dave, Erin, and Charlotte attend Camp Hawkwood. The campfire story depicts a ghost-camp. In a routine initiation the four experience the `story' first-hand. Will they escape alive? In "Don't Forget Me" a family moves into a new house. Danielle is left to look after her brother Peter when the parents go away. To make him a better brother, Danielle decides to hynotize Peter, who then begins to act strange. Does this have anything to do with the calls from the basement or is it a hynotization gone wrong? Lastly, in "Full Moon Halloween" a rumoured werewolf is attacking people. An invite to a surprise Halloween party for five friends soon turns into a game of `Who is the werewolf?' Will everybody pass, fail, or is it all a hoax? Each of the episodes are excellently scripted and are great stories. The episodes even feature familiar faces....faces such as Amanda Bynes (Big Fat Liar), Sam Jones III & Allison Mack (Smallville), Frankie Muniz (Malcolm In The Middle), Madeline Zima (The Nanny) + a few others. In term of the special features, they are quite excellent as well. Aside from trailers from other Warner Brothers titles, an an intervew with R.L. Stine entitled "The Nightmare Files," there is a bravery test of our darkest fears in "Do You Dare," and lastly a choose-your-own-adventure type of interactive game with "The Nightmare is Yours:Sink or Swim" where you decide your fate. I recommend that this disc be picked up because the stories and features are things that people of all ages would enjoy. So please don't forget to venture into "The Nightmare Room" or else "The Nightmare Room" will venture into you! :-)

      5 out of 5 stars Camp Nowhere.......2002-08-27

I watched Camp Nowhere once and I really like it alot, and the part that I really liked the most is when one kid was cutting down the tree and everybody else was running from the storm to get back inside, but the camp was gone, and the people who were there were gone forever.
