From the day he picked her up on a Dublin street, James Joyce (Ewan McGregor) was passionately in love with Nora Barnacle (Susan Lynch). Her sexual forwardness excited him, then rapidly fed into his compulsive jealousy. Nora follows these famous literary lovers as they flee Dublin for Italy, hoping to find freedom from claustrophobic Irish city life. Joyce's erratic emotions continue to make life difficult, but they find some happiness and have two children. Then, when Joyce returns to Dublin to open a movie theater, the lies of his former friends send him into a jealous fury--which is finally resolved by an erotic correspondence treasured by scholars and fans of Joyce's novels. Nora depicts all sides of Joyce and Nora, not shying away from the writer's difficult personality or from the often torrid language of their letters. A well-rounded biographical film. --Bret Fetzer

Amazon.com essential video
The Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Best Director Robert Zemeckis, and Best Actor Tom Hanks, this unlikely story of a slow-witted but good-hearted man somehow at the center of the pivotal events of the 20th century is a funny and heartwarming epic. Hanks plays the title character, a shy Southern boy in love with his childhood best friend (Robin Wright) who finds that his ability to run fast takes him places. As an All-Star football player he meets John F. Kennedy; as a soldier in Vietnam he's a war hero; and as a world champion Ping-Pong player he's hailed by Richard Nixon. Becoming a successful shrimp-boat captain, he still yearns for the love of his life, who takes a quite different and much sadder path in life. The visual effects incorporating Hanks into existing newsreel footage is both funny and impressive, but the heart of the film lies in its sweet love story and in the triumphant performance of Hanks as an unassuming soul who savors the most from his life and times. --Robert Lane
Customer Reviews:
Heartwarming, deep and very, very funny. Forrest Gump is the Ultimate Movie........2007-07-04
The sweetest of love stories, philosophically profound, deep as the ocean and light as a feather... and very funny. Forrest Gump is the ultimate movie in so many ways, there are so many sides to it. It's predominantly a `serious' film about a dim headed, yet good hearted southern boy and how the absence of a dysfunctional ego and a simple sense of honor and integrity enables him to flow through life effortlessly, like the metaphor of the white feather we see at the beginning and the end of the film.
Forrest Gump is a masterfully written and directed tale that punctuates deep philosophical substance with a good deal of humor -the scene of Forrest and Bubba scrubbing the floor with toothbrushes while Bubba enlightens Forrest on the details of `shrimping' is just too funny for words. There's never been a film like it before or since. It ingeniously weaves the history of a generation into the script, taking scenes from the Vietnam war, JFK, the 60's protest movement and flower power, and onward into the age of AIDS. Actual film clippings from various historical events are cleverly edited to enable Forrest to step into them and interact. Wonderful Stuff... it's kind of a nod to the `Wonder Years'.
As richly entertaining as Forrest's life is, and as very funny as many of the scenes are, it's still the character of Forrest that carries the move. He's impossible not to like. You become significantly invested in his life. You share his heartbreak as Jenny repeated shuns the open heart he offers her. And you admire his quiet acceptance of 'what is'. His lack of self consciousness - devoid of the myriad games and manipulations that most people of `greater intelligence' display -his simple open heartedness and sense of personal integrity which he carries through life are inspirational. This clearly is a story that shows the ultimate triumph of virtue over the complex dysfunctions of the mind. Jenny plays out a sad character... always looking somewhere else for love, although she finds it on her death bed And Lt. Dan is just an awesome character. His 360 degree turn through what life deals him is as inspirational as Forrest's.
The closing scene is the most memorable for me... the feather floats in the random breeze, as Forrest muses about predestination vs random existence: " I think it's both... both happening at the same time." - which leads me to believe our beloved Forrest isn't as dumb as he's portrayed.
Forrest Gump a hero for our times.......2007-06-28
Forrest Gump is a greatlook at the 60s and 70s. Tom Hanks is the most likable actor from his generation. Forrest Gump may seem dumb but he mostly makes sense. Forrest Gump has a good heart and guts, his life is a good full life. Forrest Gump is one of the best characters in movie history. This movie is everything its supposed to be.
Forrest Gump.......2007-06-27
It is one of the greatest movies than I've ever seen BUT it doesn't have spanish subtitles.
a spiritually and intellectually bankrupt enterprise.......2007-06-15
This movie celebrates one of the worst possible perspectives on life and does it by exploiting all of the good will and energy of music of the Woodstock generation. Think about it: Tom Hanks portrays a pure innocent who presumably is to be seen as an American Buddha -- detached from everything except pure love. Meanwhile, Robin Wright Penn is portrayed as an idiot because she invests herself in silly causes such as opposing the Vietnam War. We are manipulated into sympathizing with the figure who remains utterly detached from life instead of the figure who cares about the world around her.
Meanwhile, we are further manipulated by a soundtrack carefully assembled so as to have us associate all the good feelings and hopes connected to the songs with what we are watching: a phenomenal bit of film making that successfully transposes the audiences associations with the highest ideals of the sixties and seventies on a film that belittles commitments to those beliefs.
This is a truly insidious, reactionary piece of work. At the end of the movie, "Nashville," Robert Altman cleverly decries the ease by which an audience can be seduced into acquiescing to feel-good nihilism by having everyone leave the theater singing "You may say that I ain't free, it don't worry me." with gospel abandon. The raves that the movie Forest Gump got proves Altman's point.
No one can deny that this movie is a well made film with some sweet and wonderful performances. But, at its core, it is spiritually bankrupt. While it is not as powerful a film as "Triumph of the Will" and the "philosophy" it attempts to manipulate the audience into buying isn't as remotely evil as that of Leni R's patrons, it is nonetheless of that ilk -- a successful attempt to bypass the audience's frontal lobe.

The Waltons: The Complete Fifth Season finds the Depression-era, Blue Ridge Mountains family a little more in touch with the outside world, largely because of the aspirations of the growing Walton children. The most dramatic example, over numerous epsiodes, results from the assertiveness of professional journalist John-Boy (Richard Thomas) as he insists on publishing national and international news in the small-circulation Blue Ridge Chronicle he writes, edits, and publishes. A lot of people in the county are mystified as to why John-Boy would want to bring Walton's Mountain closer to epochal events in Germany, or why he would choose to provide coverage of the Hindenburg zeppelin's aerial triumphs despite its link to the Nazis. Yet John-Boy is just as interested in his backyard as the world stage: In season opener "The First Edition," he stands up to strong pressure to kill a story about a judge whose drunk-driving offense causes costly property damage. In "The Fire Storm," locals are appalled when he prints excerpts from Hitler's Mein Kampf in order to make readers aware of what kind of madman the German chancellor is.
While John-Boy stands up to popular opinion, brother Jason (Jon Walmsley), a talented musician, has to take a job playing piano at a roadhouse to make up for the loss of his college scholarship. The decision doesn't go down too well with the Walton women, but Jason's presence at the Dew Drop Inn allows for some interesting scenes over the course of the season, none more so than the unexpected visit of a fire-and-brimstone evangelist in "The Baptism." In that same show, father John Walton, played by Ralph Waite, notorious in his Christian community for eschewing church services, faces renewed pressure from wife Olivia (Michael Learned) to accept her faith, making for one of the most interesting episodes of the season. Meanwhile, John-Boy's sister, Mary Ellen (Judy Norton), is wooed by a couple of different men and hears wedding bells with one of them. She also pursues her nursing degree and misdiagnoses an ailment of Grandma Esther (Ellen Corby), resulting in long-term hospitalization and no end of grief for Grandpa Zeb (Will Geer). The other, increasingly restless Walton boys and girls grab their share of the spotlight, too, but The Complete Fifth Season is, once again, John-Boy's year, capped by dramatic developments in his career and vision of himself. --Tom Keogh

We Love It!.......2007-07-03
Thank you for providing access to these great family shows. I grew up watching all of these in the 70's, and I love seeing them again. My husband and I just had a baby, and we plan to show these DVDs to our child some day, as well. They just don't make the same quality t.v. shows the way they used to. I can't wait for the next season of The Waltons to become available... will you notify me?
Thanks!
Brenda P.
Great Family Viewing.......2007-06-27
I'm so glad there are DVDs of this best of all family programs. We need more shows like this to watch over and over again. It is nice to have the collection to view when there is nothing worth my time on TV.
old time beauty salon.......2007-06-17
As I am trying to recreate a 1930's beauty salon, I found that the episode, The Rebellion, was right on target. Not only is the beauty salon seemingly authentic, so is the perm machine that is being used. Steam was shown rising from the head! Seeing this helped me understand what I should see with my own perm machine for my videos. For those intrigued by beauty salons of days past, I highly recommend the 5th season of the Waltons, even just for this one episode!
Classic Waltons.......2007-06-17
The 5th season is the last with the full cast and it is very good. We are already about 12 episodes in and there have been many changes during that time. For one the kids all seem to be growing up rapidly and there has already been a marriage this season. It's a great joy to be able to view these again as the last time I saw them was with my grandparents when they were originally aired on TV. The Waltons is still one of the best shows ever to grace the TV screen. What can I say if you like The Waltons then go get it now; you won't be sorry.
GREAT DVD's set........2007-06-11
These are a great purchase for someone who was a Waltons fan. And even if you weren't it is a great addition to your DVD collection and very good for your children to watch.

What is last line spoken by Meg Ryan?.......2007-07-01
Also one of my favorite movies. This classic is shown at least once a month on one or another of my cable channels. I am particularly impressed with the way the music moves the story along as it reaches its conclusion. I'm still trying to get the last line--spoken by Meg Ryan just before the elevator doors close and the credits begin. Can anyone tell me what she says to Sam and/or Jonah. Thank you for your assistance. Mary McCue
Wonderful.......2007-06-16
This is a classic film, full of romance and yet the 2 main characters are almost never together...great job!
What I think about Sleepless in Seattle.......2007-05-18
This was supposedly a little known film that made a big impact on me and the general product. Anthing with Tom Hanks is usally a good bet it's going to be good, plus add in Meg Ryan and it's going to be a winner. I realy enjoyed this movie
Feel Good Movie!.......2007-03-18
This is such a feel good movie. It makes you believe in "Love At First Sight" or Love at first touch. This is a movie I watch over and over again. When I am sad and want to be lifted up. When I want to believe in love. There is a line in the movie that goes something like this, "it was like coming home, but not to any home I have ever know before". That's what you want to believe love is, like coming home.
Outstanding Romantic Fantasy.......2007-02-07
I dislike most chick flicks, so I wondered why I found Sleepless in Seattle (SIS) so entertaining and emotionally satisfying. I concluded that it succeeds for me primarily as a fantasy. My remarks here focus on that aspect of the movie and ignore its other strengths, notably its witty screenplay and the outstanding acting, by both youngsters and old pros.
For me, a good fantasy, in a movie or in a book, does at least two key things. (1) It uses a fantasy environment to strip away distractions from underlying truths that are basically important and emotionally resonant but that are so simple that they seem trite when considered more baldly. (2) It provides characters with whom one can easily and enjoyably identify because they act -- within the unrealistic fantasy environment -- in ways that are very plausible, human, and appealing. The actions of these characters may be more admirable than the viewer or reader typically aspires to in everyday life, but they do not reach the point of being unrealistic (like the fantasy environment) and unbelievable.
To illustrate my first criterion for a good fantasy, consider the subgenre of heroic fantasy, where the defining underlying truth is that some battles are worth fighting, and some causes are worth risking one's life for. In a typical non-fantasy story about WWII, it is not entirely satisfying to realize that one is being induced to forget that many of the German or Japanese soldiers that are being mowed down would have lived entirely decent lives if the war had not occurred. On the other hand, in the fantasy environment of Lord of the Rings (LOTR), one is much less distracted by such issues when orcs and Uruk-hai are being mowed down. The empathetic consideration of bravery thereby becomes more powerful and satisfying. (Tolkien's books take a few moments to wonder about the family lives of orcs, but those moments are fleeting.)
Considering SIS as a fantasy, the most important underlying simple truth for me -- admittedly trite -- is that there is an important element of chance and luck in finding a more compatible partner, not to mention one that is more universally desirable.
Key elements of the SIS fantasy environment are more exaggerations than the kind of pure contrivance commonly employed in heroic fantasy: (1) Compatibility with a partner ideally exceeds a recognizable threshold beyond which it becomes "magical," and prospective long-run satisfaction from the relationship takes a quantum leap. (2) A few minutes of overheard phone conversation or a few seconds of direct observation are sufficient to identify a potential soul mate with high probability of success. (3) Certain gifted preadolescents can be extremely mature and perceptive in identifying promising and unpromising potential soul mates for adults.
From very limited examination of chick flicks, my impression is that most do not work as fantasy because they do not partition unrealistic plot elements into a fantasy environment. Instead, lack of realism pervades the plot and the behavior of the lead characters. The behavior of the lead characters is often made even less appealing because they are overwrought and self-absorbed.
In two-world heroic fantasies such as Chronicles of Narnia, the heroes typically have great initial skepticism about the fantasy world they have encountered, which serves generally to reinforce the realism of the heroes' personal behavior and particularly to reinforce the partitioning off of the fantasy environment. In SIS, protagonists Annie and Sam do something similar. Moreover, they do it with entertaining humor, which is even better.
Many professional movie reviewers liked SIS but seemed to be embarrassed to admit it and seemed compelled to express reservations. Considering SIS as a fantasy, their reservations tend to become insignificant or irrelevant. A typical criticism was that the plot was contrived and gimmicky -- a stunt. However, saying that the fantasy elements of the SIS plot are contrived is akin to criticizing LOTR because there is no such thing as a ring of power that can make its wearer invisible. The observation is literally correct but, for the cooperative viewer or reader, fundamentally irrelevant. Another typical reservation from the pros was that the proceedings of SIS are entirely feather-light and ephemeral. However, for me at least, a light touch is exactly what best serves the underlying simple truth that this fantasy is considering.
SIS particularly resonates for me because I have been lucky enough to find a wife who puts up with me much better than I deserve, despite idiosyncrasies that are more reminiscent of Walter than of Sam Baldwin. In fact, I am writing this commentary primarily for Valentine's Day 2007. I will be including a copy, with this concluding paragraph highlighted, in my card.

By now, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan have amassed such a fund of goodwill with moviegoers that any new onscreen pairing brings nearly reflexive smiles. In You've Got Mail, the quintessential boy and girl next door repeat the tentative romantic crescendo that made Sleepless in Seattle, writer-director Nora Ephron's previous excursion with the duo, a massive hit. The prospective couple do actually meet face to face early on, but Mail otherwise repeats the earlier feature's gentle, extended tease of saving its romantic resolution until the final, gauzy shot.
The underlying narrative is an even more old-fashioned romantic pas de deux that is casually hooked to a newfangled device. The script, cowritten by the director and her sister, Delia Ephron, updates and relocates the Ernst Lubitsch classic, The Shop Around the Corner, to contemporary Manhattan, where Joe Fox (Hanks) is a cheerfully rapacious merchant whose chain of book superstores is gobbling up smaller, more specialized shops such as the children's bookstore owned by Kathleen Kelly (Ryan). Their lives run in close parallel in the same idealized neighborhood, yet they first meet anonymously, online, where they gradually nurture a warm, even intimate correspondence. As they begin to wonder whether this e-mail flirtation might lead them to be soul mates, however, they meet and clash over their colliding business fortunes.
It's no small testament to the two stars that we wind up liking and caring about them despite the inevitable (and highly manipulative) arc of the plot. Although their chemistry transcended the consciously improbable romantic premise of Sleepless, enabling director Ephron to attain a kind of amorous soufflé, this time around there's a slow leak that considerably deflates the affair. Less credulous viewers will challenge Joe's logic in prolonging the concealment of his online identity from Kathleen, and may shake their heads at Ephron's reinvention of Manhattan as a spotless, sun-dappled wonderland where everybody lives in million-dollar apartments and color coordinates their wardrobes for cocktail parties. --Sam Sutherland

You've got OSCARS!!!.......2007-07-03
I absolutely know why the academy went nuts over this one. It definitely graduated magnum cum laude in my opinion!!!
The chemistry between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan is out of this world! Sleepless in Seattle was good, Running in Circles was great, and You've Got Mail was phenomenal!!!
I loved that one part when Tom Hanks sells the dictionary to that one guy!!! It was so funny. I heard that most of this movie was unscripted... just a testament to these actors' abilities to light up the Silver Screen.
Before I write more about this movie, I think it would be a good idea JUST TO THANK these wonderful actors for their contribution. I heard that AOL didn't even exist until after this movie was made!! Talk about defining popular culture, huh?
So back to the movie. Greg Kinnear is in it.
RENT IT.
Very Good Date Movie.......2007-07-03
Very Good movie based on the start of the cyberdating era. Good storyline, very believable. It is cute, it is entertaining, it's a little funny! You root for the success of the romance!
Again and Again!!!.......2007-06-27
I LOVE IT! It could be called a chick flick but even a guy would be able to find something to love. It leaves Shop Around the Corner (the orginal You Got Mail) in its dust. I orginally had you got mail on VHS but I watched it so much the picture was starting to look pretty bad. But I didn't mind having to buy it again. Hanks and Ryan work perfectly together! And the music isn't that bad either. It's most definitely one of the best romantic comedies EVER! And anyone that says differently should feel shame.
Tom and Meg..........2007-06-16
...is there a better pairing? Lovely film! Be sure to watch it again with Nora's commentary.
You've Got Mail.......2007-06-08
This is a classic and I never get tired of watching it. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are a very good match for this romantic comedy. This type of movie is something a entire family can set down and watch together.

A confident hybrid of M*A*S*H, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and Dr. Strangelove, Three Kings is one of the most seriously funny war movies ever made. Improving the premise of Kelly's Heroes with scathing intelligence, it explores the odd connection between war and consumerism in the age of Humvees and cellular phones. Writer-director David O. Russell's third film (after Spanking the Monkey and Flirting with Disaster), it's a no-holds-barred portrait of personal conscience in the volatile arena of politics, played out by one of the most gifted filmmakers to emerge in the 1990s.
George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovich) play a quartet of U.S. soldiers who, disillusioned by Operation Desert Storm, decide to steal $23 million in gold hijacked from Kuwait by Saddam Hussein's army. Getting the bullion out of an Iraqi stronghold is easy; keeping it is a potentially lethal proposition. By the end of their mercenary mission, the Americans can no longer ignore wartime atrocities (and neither can we--the film is boldly unflinching), and conscience demands their aid to Iraqi rebels abandoned by President George Bush's fickle wartime policy. This is serious stuff indeed, but Russell infuses Three Kings with a keen sense of the absurd, and the entire film is an exercise in breathtaking visual ingenuity. Despite a conventional ending that's mildly disappointing for such a brashly original film, Three Kings conveys the brutal madness of war while making you laugh out loud at the insanity. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Clever, funny and different.......2007-06-23
David O. Russel's 'Three Kings' is a hard film to lock down into a particular genre. It combines elements of a war movie, a comedy and a drama, and manages to do it very well. People wanting to see lots of big guns and bombs should stay well clear, there are video games to keep you amused. Anyone who appreciates witty, clever and slightly off beat films is well advised to see it.
Telling the untold story of the Gulf War, with Saddam's army more worried about shooting rebel Iraqis then allied soldiers, was a brave move in Hollywood, because many people don't want to know that a democratic uprising in Iraq was being crushed while the Allies sat by in the desert. Rather than being an action movie, the film develops into an exploration of three soldiers and the human development caused by their experience of the war, and the extraordinary circumstances they place themselves in.
Many innovative and experimental cinematic styles are used nicely, and solid performances are recorded by Clooney, Wahlberg, Jonze and Cube. The characters are portrayed as normal human beings, both noble and flawed at the same time, and even the Iraqi soldiers are seen as people rather than typical war movie bad guy cannon fodder. This film genuinely showed me the desperation felt by many Iraqis for the Allies to help them as they starved and fought desperately against Saddam.
One of my favorite films, and probably one of the most underrated films of its time
Don't like Clooney, what are you Looney?.......2007-05-13
Sorry about the title, Three kings was not a movie I chose to see on the big screen. My wife recommended it and I found it was an entertaining flick. Not a desert storm movie like Jar Heads, a different take on an old story line.
Interesting Adventure film set In Iraq after Gulf War 1.......2007-04-09
A group of Gi's in Kuwait following the first Gulf War find a map on a prisoner that leads them back across the border on a gold hunt. The country is in a state of chaos with Sadam's soldiers taking their revenge on anti- Sadam citizens. The GI's get caught up in a more complicated situation with refugees then they planned on.
Well conceived and written with excellent special effects, this is a hard movie to categorize. It's sort of Oceans 11 goes to Iraq, A combination military adventure/heist movie with some interesting social commentary and moralizing thrown in.
All three of the principal actors do a good job but Ice Cube is particularly good in this. George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg are fine in their respective roles.
Definitely entertaining and different.
Good movie.......2007-03-30
This is a good movie that starts out as an adventure and slowly changes into a morality movie. I like it and think its setting is contemporary and timely.
Very ordinary..........2007-03-23
This was a critically lauded film, so when I went in, I had high expectations. Roger Ebert himself called it a masterpiece. I saw it, and it was certainly interesting, but I immediately forgot about it right after I left the theater. There really isn't much depth here. It's more reminiscent of getting a quick rush from something, then after it wears off, you don't even remember how you felt afterwards. I remember a scene where a cow is blown up, but other than that, it's hard for me to remember anything about it. It ultimately was very ordinary, and not a really deep film about war.

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock pair up again in what could be described as the anti-Speed: The Lake House, a sweet, relaxed-paced, whimsical romance. When Alex Wyler (Reeves, The Matrix) moves into an unusual glass house on stilts over a lake, he discovers a note from the previous tenant in the mailbox--but no one's lived in the house for years. He replies and soon discovers that he's corresponding with a doctor named Kate Forster (Bullock, Miss Congeniality) who's writing from two years in the future. Their correspondence turns romantic and their paths cross in unexpected ways, but when they try to truly connect, danger looms. Though the plot of The Lake House sounds potentially static, the movie is skillfully structured and, despite some truly awful dialogue, will exert an emotional pull on anyone willing to embrace the device of the time-travelling mailbox. What the movie really demonstrates, though, is the genuine rapport between Bullock and Reeves; Reeves, though handsome, has a wooden presence--but in his few scenes with Bullock, his stiffness transforms into a palpable yearning. On-screen chemistry is slippery and hard to define, but these two have it. --Bret Fetzer
Description
A lonely doctor (Sandra Bullock) who once occupied an unusual lakeside home begins exchanging love letters with its newest resident, a frustrated architect (Keanu Reeves). When they discover that they're actually living two years apart, they must try to unravel the mystery behind their extraordinary romance before it's too late.

Think - Vanilla Sky or Sixth Sense.......2007-06-21
Great Love Story with a Twist!!! I've seen it twice and have it in my library. I am sure I'll watch it again. It's a great romance, excellent date movie that leaves you with a good feeling! A very unique concept! You'll love it!
Second Chance.......2007-06-17
"Lake House" didn't do well in the theaters, and that doesn't surprise me.
I saw the movie at my sister's house last Thanksgiving, and bought it just recently. Here's the theory: The Keanu Reeves (Alex) character is killed crossing a city street in the beginning of the movie while the Sandra Bullock character (Kate) is sitting on a bench with her mother in the square, and she sees it happen. Maybe he saw from her across the street and was intrigued; maybe he had seen her somewhere before and wanted to talk to her. It's Valentine's Day 2006. After that, Alex starts communicating with her from "heaven," with the help of God or a Guardian Angel disguised as a dog named Jack. (Jack is both of their dogs, and Jack seems to know everything). Kate then starts writing to Alex two years in the past, and the whole episode of letter exchanges "across time" from beginning to end is a process of changing history, a "second chance" for both of them.
The thing that intrigued me about "Lake House" was that at first I didn't really understand what was going on; and then I realized that it all made sense (given the premise that time travel is possible) once you realize that he got killed in the beginning of the movie in a traffic accident, and right after that she gets an answer back from him from the past in her mailbox. This is a time travel movie, but strictly speaking it is not sci-fi, maybe the genre should be called "romantic mysticism."
Alex can't show up at the restaurant where he made a reservation for them to meet two years in advance because he is dead. For the same reason, he can't call her on the phone at the appointed time that she gives in another letter. When he meets her earlier (in 2004) at Kate's boyfriend Morgan's party, and when he picks up her lost book at the train station, we can assume that these are also changed history episodes that didn't really happen the first time around. (Then again we might assume that they did happen.) Also when he plants the trees in front of the big apartment building where she lives in 2006, history is changed and the full-grown trees suddenly appear. At the end of the story when she writes to tell him not to cross the street on Valentine's day 2006, the main history changing event takes place and they can finally meet in 2006 with both knowing who each other is.
I gave away the "plot" because this is the kind of movie you can enjoy much more once you know what's going on.
Good time travel movie.
Imaginative love story that won't fail to delight........2007-06-16
The Lake House is a rare, modern romantic drama that won't fail to delight the viewer. As beautiful as it is mysterious, watching it a second time proved more enjoyable than the first. Without the need to decipher the mystery before the film ended, I was able to enjoy the heartfelt roles of both Kate (Sandra Bullock) and Alex (Keanu Reeves) free from any images of Miss Congeniality or Neo from The Matrix. The mystery surrounding the lake house keeps this story a class above any other drama or romance of late and I do hope we see Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves working together in the years to come.
A love story.......2007-06-13
I went to the theater to see this movie, because the previews made it look so appealing. About halfway through the movie, I knew I was going to buy it to watch again. I love both actors and the unexpected twist of two people living separated by two years added another dimension. I wanted all the loose ends to be tied up and a clearcut explanation for why they could communicate (I like everything spelled out - not open to interpretation) but I still enjoyed every minute. If you are a romantic, you will probably like this story. Some great acting in it, too!
WOULD THEY EVER MAKE IT TO EACH OTHER?.......2007-06-13
T. Anderson give the most great and complete review.
I wasn't sure that I would like the movie but felt it was worth buying.
To tell the truth I have never seen a dog like Jack.
The Mystery of the Lake House seems to revolve around love.
Alex's fathers love for his wife and the house and his son.
I loved the fast flag flip.
Kate being at Alex's death to save him later.
The Lake House finally brought them together. Time is no obstacle to love.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ---------- most excellent.

The Waltons: The Complete Fourth Season finds life on Walton's Mountain changing in some significant ways. The first episode, "The Sermon," sets the tone with a story in which oldest son John-Boy Walton (Richard Thomas) is asked by the local preacher (John Ritter) to substitute for him at one Sunday service. Meanwhile, John-Boy's mother, Olivia (Michael Learned), is asked by the local schoolteacher to fill in for her for a week. Each of these Waltons has doubts that they're up to the task (Olivia has an especially hard time, since her charges include several of her own children). But they persevere, and Olivia finds herself teaching on and off throughout the season. Meanwhile, patriarch John (Ralph Waite) has a midlife crisis that causes him to leave home for a stretch, a cousin of Olivia's comes to grieve the death of her husband, the family closely follows the abdication of King Edward from the throne in England, and musician Jason Walton (Jon Walmsley) has a crisis of confidence as a performer. Special episodes include "The Fighter," starring Cleavon Little as a boxer who takes a paying job working for the Waltons, and whose presence upsets Olivia and Grandma (Ellen Corby). "The Genius" finds John-Boy being asked by his school to supervise a brilliant but socially cold 16-year-old who has to learn a lot about life. --Tom Keogh
Description
It's 1936: Hitler and Mussolini threaten the world, King Edward gives up the English throne for love, Gangbusters is on the radio, a movie crew hires John-Boy as a scriptwriter, Mary Ellen applies to nursing school, Jim-Bob discovers a shocking fact about his birth and a fire drives the Waltons from their home. Waltons 4th season.......2007-05-13
As far as the Waltons it was good, but the first disk had 1,2,3 on both sides, and the quality was a little lacking
The Waltons Season Four was Great!.......2007-05-12
This season of our favorite Great Depression family, the Waltons, was one of the best in the whole entire series. Changes in the normal life of everyone increase more and more. New people come and old kin visit. John-boy takes on a challenge in the latter part of the series that will leave Walton's Mountain a beacon calling "Home,, Sweeet, Home!"
Waltons 4th season.......2007-05-09
I enjoy these types of family movies. I especially enjoy the continuing story as the children grow up. I also watched all 9 seasons of Little House On The Prairie. That one was my favorite. I wish the children of today has just 1/2 of the values they did back then.
Great Family Show But Poor Transfer Quality & No Extras.........2007-04-26
Now don't get the wrong impression of my rating because this is an excellent family show and it gets 5 stars it that area, but the 2 rating is my opinion of the poor way that this quality show was put on DVD.. First i noticed that this is a bare bones transfer with no extras but you would think since we are paying good money for these dvds that they would at least make sure the trasnfer quality from film to dvd is excellent, but sadly its not, it seems like there was not much care taken in the transfer process. Let me explain, during the opening music i noticed that it fades in and out something that i did not notice in the previous 3 seasons. Also on a few episodes i just watched, it appears like there was little cleaning up of the film done before transfer to get rid of all the spots or floaters that sometimes appear on older films, it would have been nice if the time was taken to remaster the film for good dvd viewing. It also would have been nice to include a closed caption feature for the hearing impaired for those who need it. In closing i really enjoy watching the Waltons and I am very pleased to have it on DVD, but if a little more care and extra work was put into the transfer process this could be so much better and i would feel i am getting the most for my money spent...
GREAT SHOW BARE BONES RELEASE IS A BUMMER.......2007-04-18
Another great season! I wish someone would get some kind of behind the scenes info for some bonus material for these releases. Season 5 the last great season is coming out soon. After John Boy's departure and the loss of Grampa the series goes down hill fast!

Amazon.com essential video
Having proven itself as a favorite film of children around the world, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is every bit as entertaining now as it was when originally released in 1971. There's a timeless appeal to Roald Dahl's classic children's novel, which was playfully preserved in this charming musical, from the colorful carnival-like splendor of its production design to the infectious melody of the "Oompah-Loompah" songs that punctuate the story. Who can forget those diminutive Oompah-Loompah workers who recite rhyming parental warnings ("Oompah-Loompah, doopity do...") whenever some mischievous child has disobeyed Willy Wonka's orders to remain orderly? Oh, but we're getting ahead of ourselves ... it's really the story of the impoverished Charlie Bucket, who, along with four other kids and their parental guests, wins a coveted golden ticket to enter the fantastic realm of Wonka's mysterious confectionery. After the other kids have proven themselves to be irresponsible brats, it's Charlie who impresses Wonka and wins a reward beyond his wildest dreams. But before that, the tour of Wonka's factory provides a dazzling parade of delights, and with Gene Wilder giving a brilliant performance as the eccentric candyman, Wonka gains an edge of menace and madness that nicely counterbalances the movie's sentimental sweetness. It's that willingness to risk a darker tone--to show that even a wonderland like Wonka's can be a weird and dangerous place if you're a bad kid--that makes this an enduring family classic. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A poor little boy wins a ticket to visit the inside of a mysterious and magical chocolate factory. When he experiences the wonders inside the factory, the boy discovers that the entire visit is a test of his character.
Customer Reviews:
Wilder makes this movie worth it........2007-06-27
Don't let the star rating fool you. Despite this movie having an absurd plot, largely unlikable characters, particularly Charlie's family, and repetitive singing from the loompas, this is a fantastic movie. But wilder and the boy who plays charlie are the ones who really makes this movie a classic. ill leave the explanation of whats in this movie to the editors and other reviewers.
the reason for the 1 star deduction is because of the transfer quality. some scenes are quite bad. such as the sketchiness of when charlie runs home after finding the golden ticket. since its been ages since i've last seen this movie i have no idea if anything was removed.
Overall, this is a good buy. They're are interviews with cast and directors included on this too which makes even more valuable.
This is a great movie that your entire family will surely enjoy time and time again........2007-06-20
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is an awesome movie. I used to watch this over and over again as a child. My favorite character is Veruca Salt (Julie Dawn Cole) because she was so mean and spoiled. I loved how Veruca always seemed to get her way, it was so funny. This is a great movie that your entire family will surely enjoy time and time again.
One of my favorite movies of all time!.......2007-06-05
I don't know what it is, but when you see the opening scene of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, you will instantly be hooked.
So what's to like about this movie? Pretty much everything! If you're a kid, you'll love the candy scenes (yum!) and the weird and funny "tour" scenes. If you're an adult, you'll appreciate the "moral of the story" and the little inside jokes here and there.
And what's NOT to like about this movie? Not much. I find myself fast forwarding through the "Cheer up Charlie" song simply because it seems to last forever but that's not enough reason to lower my rating. Also, if you're a parent and are picky about what your kids watch, the end of the movie (where the poor kid gets everything he wants) may or may not be a not so good lesson to teach to your kids.
My verdict: 5/5 stars. I can't see why anyone would NOT like this movie. I can watch it three times a week and still be enthralled each time. This is a must have movie in every household's movie collection!
Excellent Movie!.......2007-05-09
This is a movie for the generations. My two year old niece is as fascinated as I was when I first saw the movie. She and I sing along everytime we watch the movie together. I love this movie for its strong moral content, as well as the world of fantasy it evokes. No big budget movie today can touch it. Get it for a child, and get one for yourself.
Best Movie Ever!.......2007-04-21
I have loved this movie ever since I can remember watching movies. I was just so fascinated with everything in it. I watch it all the time. If you've never watched it, make sure you do. It will always be at the top of my list.

Bestowing Jim Carrey with godlike powers is a ripe recipe for comedy, and Bruce Almighty delivers the laughs that Carrey's mainstream fans prefer. The high-concept premise finds Carrey playing Bruce Nolan, a frustrated Buffalo TV reporter, stuck doing puff-pieces while a lesser colleague (the hilarious Steven Carell) gets the anchor job he covets. Bruce demands an explanation from God, who pays him a visit (in the serene form of Morgan Freeman) and lets Bruce take over while he takes a brief vacation. What does a petty, angry guy do when he's God? That's where Carrey has a field day, reuniting with his Ace Ventura and Liar, Liar director, Tom Shadyac, while Jennifer Aniston gamely keeps pace as Bruce's put-upon fiancée. Carrey's actually funnier before he becomes Him, and the movie delivers a sappy, safely diluted notion of faith that lacks the sincerity of the 1977 hit Oh, God! Still, we can be thankful that Carrey took the high road and left Little Nicky to Adam Sandler. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful.......2007-06-18
As a pastor, I had some misgivings before I saw this film. Now, I wish I had seen it long before. It is delightful, hilarious and not at all blasphemous. It is a comedy that actually has some redeeming theological value.
The story is of a self absorbed news reporter. When things don't go as he wished, he falls into a theological temper tantrum and calls God out for the injustice he perceives to have been done. God answers the call and teaches the self absorbed idiot a lesson by granting him divine power over a limited area of New York.
At first this seems like a lot of fun but it soon becomes apparent that as he gets what he wants, he loses that which he most needs...the love of his long suffering girlfriend.
I would never call this a teaching tool but it does have a point and that point is amusingly put. It's a great job.
No Cohesion/Too Manic.......2007-05-19
Jim Carrey's energy level is unbelievable considering he ain't that young anymore. However in 'Bruce Almighty' he plays an unsympathetic character who did not deserve God's undivided attention. So the premise of the movie stinks from the get go. The movie was also deleted to death which tells me the studio destroyed any cohesion it may otherwise have had. These 'God' movies are nearly impossible to pull off anyhow unless they're being done from a non-secular perspective. You know what I'm talkin about if you've been around for a while or can remember the backlash that 'Little Nickie' caused. The supporting cast is outstanding for this movie but they can't save it from a wishy washy, cliched script. Catherine Bell is pretty much missing in action and or regulated to stick figure status. What a waste ! The funniest scene in the movie was deleted. It involved Carrey free-falling onto Big Foot and then they both miraculously survive. I don't know about you but that was a side-splitting moment for me ! Jim Carrey is funny but here he has little restraints put on him so it's just too much Carrey. If I could redo the movie from scratch I'd one 'Attempt to get religion out of it' , two 'reduce Jim Carrey's exposure-make him more sympathetic', three 'Increase Catherine Bell's exposure'. We're talkin about a much different movie now. Jennifer Aniston is good. I'd keep her. Morgan Freeman is excellent as God but I would have made him a bum that a way more sympathetic Carrey befriends to beneficial effect. I could go on and on about the movie that could have been and I will: Every time I watch this one !
"I am Bruce Almighty! My will be done!".......2007-05-07
WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS
TITLE: Bruce Almighty
PREMIERED IN: 2003
RATED: PG-13
RUNNING TIME: 102 Minutes
STARRING: Jim Carrey, Morgan Freeman, Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carrel
PLOT: A TV news reporter named Bruce (Carrey) is tired of having a "mediocre life" and blames all of his problems on God. Needless to say, he suddenly meets God (Freeman) and is given Godlike powers. While Bruce starts to enjoy his newfound glory, his girlfriend Grace (Aniston) is worsening because he is still the same person that he has been: egotistical. 9/10
CHARACTERS/PERFORMANCES: Carrey and Aniston are typically brilliant as the troubled couple. Carrel, I believe, steals the show as the antagonist that every news reporter would love to hate. Freeman was absolutely stunning as the humanlike God. He made me feel good about being a Protestant. But let's not forget all the memorable moments of this film. Bruce secretly tormenting new anchorman Evan (Carrel) is memorably hilarious. I don't know how Carrel was able to pull it off. Bruce breaking down on the Maid of the Mist was almost gave me a heart attack! The way he yelled out the word "eroding" just made me so happy with laughter. 9/10
THE SCRIPT/DIALOGUE: The script was top-notch, with every scene elaborated very nicely. 10/10
DIRECTOR: Tom Shadyac proves that he is a good Christian by getting the point across perfectly. There is no hint of biased storytelling anywhere; it just tells about God and the miracles that we control. Shadyac makes the tension throughout the movie flawless as Bruce Nolan starts to tear away the entire Earth whenever he works his magic. He also makes sure that the comedy is never over-the-top, although the drama can be a bit melodramatic at a few points in the movie. All in all, Shadyac does a brilliant job here. 9/10
PACING: It's perfectly paced. Nuff said. 9/10
CINEMATOGRAPHY: It's all good. There are no flaws in lighting or coloring whatsoever. 9/10
SETS AND COSTUMES: It's all modern, so there's nothing special about it. God's suit, however, might symbolize either hope or comfort. 10/10
MUSIC: It sounds very nice, although it isn't anything special. The songs (by Mick Jagger, Joan Osbourne, and Fatboy Slim) seem to fit perfectly for this movie. 8/10
VISUAL EFFECTS: All the CGI effects look realistic and beautiful. The "close-up" of the moon might be the only exception, though. 10/10
DVD SPECIAL FEATURES: The deleted scenes and extra outtakes had me in stitches (not literally)! 9/10
CONCLUSION: This isn't your typical feel-good comedy, but it does have countless moments that will make you cheer. This is one of the finest comedies that I have seen.
OVERALL GRADE: 9.2/10 A-
FUNNY BUT TRUE.......2007-05-06
THIS MOVIE IS FUNNY BUT THE FACTS IN THIS MOVIE ARE VERY TRUE. IT SHOWS THAT WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND. THEYRE ALOT OF CRUEL PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD BUT BRUCE WAS NOT ONE OF THEM. HE WAS CARING, HARD WORKING, LOVED HIS GIRLFRIEND, AND TRIED HELPING A HOMELESS MAN. BUT NO MATTER WHAT BRUCE DID IT ALWAYS BACKFIRED ON HIM. HE IN RETURN GOT MAD AT GOD AND CURSED HIM. HE THEN KEPT GETTING BEEPED ON HIS PAGER BY A WEIRD #. HE CALLED IT AND TO MAKE LONG STORY SHORT HE MET GOD. ALL IN ALL THIS MOVIE PROVES A POINT. ONLY GOD CAN KNOW WHATS RIGHT OR WRONG FOR YOU. AND NOBODY CAN OVER POWER GOD. JUST BUY THIS MOVIE YOULL WATCH IT MORE THAN ONCE TRUST ME.
Jim Carrey is ALMIGHTY funny.......2007-05-03
Here is how I knew the movie was funny-- I went in thinking it would be funny; expecting it to be funny; hoping it would be funny and WANTING it to be funny. Turns out-- it WAS funny.
Jim Carrey stars as Bruce Nolan a human interest TV Reporter in Buffalo, NY at a crossroads. In a bit of life parallel maybe (wanting to be taken seriously as a dramatic actor while being wildly hilarious??), Nolan's high ratings and beautiful girlfriend Grace (well played by Jennifer Aniston), are not enough as feels he is due something bigger & better as he awaits a possible promotion to station anchor.
In a wildly funny, angry & poignant moment (we all have been there) Carrey's Nolan angrily lashes out at God -- and the Almighty (HILARIOUSLY portrayed by the ever-suave Morgan Freeman) responds, endowing Bruce with all of His divine powers. And from there, the movie just takes off with Carrey given free-license to be a comedically-selfish almighty.
Shenanigans at the station, romantic-goofing around with Grace & potty-training the dog, all lend to another fine outing from director Tom Shadyac who let Carrey run amok in Ace Ventura as well as Liar, Liar. Its a winner, and at only 1 hr 40 mins, leaves you wanting a bit more, which in this case, is a good thing.

Purportedly one of Walt Disney's most personal pet projects, Darby O'Gill shows the effort and care put into it. Even now the special effects hold up shockingly well. Darby O'Gill is an estate caretaker, but in his advanced years he's more fond of telling tall tales in the local pub about the wee folk than keeping the grounds. A new man (a very youthful Sean Connery) is sent in to take his place, and O'Gill doesn't know what will become of himself and his daughter. He snags three spectacular opportunities, however, when he catches the king of the leprechauns. This film is whimsical without being silly, supernatural without being outlandish, and all and all a treat for the whole family. --Keith Simanton

Customer Reviews:
Darby O'Gill and the Little People.......2007-06-25
Classic Disney live-action tale delivers authentic Irish charm, and tells a whimsical story blending humor, music, romance and suspense. A couple of spooky moments might make this risky for younger kids, but overall this is delightful, family-friendly entertainment. Sharpe is charmingly roguish in the title role, and it's fun to see a pre-Bond Connery in the romantic lead. He even sings- and not badly!
Disney Fun.......2007-06-17
This has a good tribute to the Irish.
I like this because I`m Irish.
St. Patrick's Day must see.......2007-05-30
Classic movie and must see for St. Patrick's Day fun. Sean O'Connor in all his youth and charm contending with traditional Irish lass and her father.
A Classic Sean Connery!.......2007-05-28
Darby O'Gill and the Little People
A children's classic movie that is fun for the adult's to watch also. Set in Ireland, you will see a very young and singing Sean Connery, his future father-in-law taking on the king of the leprechans, and a delightful cast of townspeople. Our 2 1/2 year old Grandson only lasted for about 1/2 of it, so I would say it would be better for ages 4 or 5 and you will still be answering a lot of questions. The music is fun, a lot of early animation, and a few scary parts for little ones.
Disney movie.......2007-05-13
The greatest thing about this movie is you see Sean Connery before he had his heavy signature voice. The movie is a little heavy for young kids. My 6 year-old couldn't keep his mind on it.
