Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
Bugsy represents an almost miraculous combination of director, writer, and star on a project that represents a career highlight for everyone involved. It's one of the best American gangster movies ever made--as good in its own way as any of the Godfather films--and it's impossible to imagine anyone better than Beatty in the movie's flashy title role. As notorious mobster and Las Vegas visionary "Bugsy" Siegel, Beatty is perfectly cast as a man whose dreams are greater than his ability to realize them--or at least, greater than his ability to stay alive while making those dreams come true. With a glamorous Hollywood mistress (Annette Bening) who shares Bugsy's dream while pursuing her own upwardly mobile agenda, Bugsy seems oblivious to threats when he begins to spend too much of the mob's money on the creation of the Flamingo casino. Meyer Lansky (Ben Kingsley) and Mickey Cohen (Harvey Keitel) will support Bugsy's wild ambition to a point, after which all bets are off, and Bugsy's life hangs in the balance. From the obvious chemistry of Beatty and Bening (who met and later married off-screen) to the sumptuous reproduction of 1940s Hollywood, every detail in this movie feels impeccably right. Beatty is simply mesmerizing as the man who invented Las Vegas but never saw it thrive, moving from infectious idealism to brutal violence in the blink of an eye. Director Barry Levinson is also in peak form here, guiding the stylish story with a subtle balance of admiration and horror; we can catch Bugsy's Vegas fever and root for the gangster's success, but we know he'll get what he deserves. We might wish that Bugsy had lived to see his dream turn into a booming oasis, but the movie doesn't suggest that we should shed any tears. --Jeff Shannon

The Cat in the Hat is a marketing ploy disguised as a wildly designed movie for hyperactive kids, and it could use a dose of Ritalin. It hardly matters, though, because kids will surely enjoy the rampant romp that occurs when the top-hatted feline convinces young Sally (Dakota Fanning) and Conrad (Spencer Breslin) to wreak havoc in the home their mother (Kelly Preston) has neatly prepared for an upcoming party. It's all in the name of fun, and while Seuss's classic rhymes are relegated to voice-over narration, director Bo Welch capitalizes on his background as one of Hollywood's most gifted production designers (with credits including Edward Scissorhands and Men in Black), turning the Seussian town of "Anville" into a playful pastiche of pastels. As played by Mike Myers under layers of fur and latex, Dr. Seuss's mischievous Cat is mayhem personified, and the movie suffers from his anything-goes approach to getting a laugh. And though Myers delivers a few laughs while channeling voices from his own comedic repertoire (including "Coffee Talk" maven Linda Richman), a little of this Cat goes a long way, and he nearly wears out his welcome. --Jeff Shannon

Belongs in a Litter-Box!.......2007-04-04
When I watched this stinker, I felt like sniffing it and covering it up.
This is just another attempt to cash in on nostalgia. Obviously the producers of the film were aiming at parents fond memories of the Dr. Seuss classic childrens book and tried to exploit it into an updated version. It fails miserably. It is another example of Hollywood dumping tons of money on the look of a movie instead of the script. Dont get me wrong, this movie looks great. It has awesome costumes and set design but the problem is, it seems like they whipped the screenplay out in 20 minutes. Even the kids think this movie stinks.
Do your child a favor, avoid this film and instead sit down and read your child the original book. They will appreciate it way more.

I loved this movie. The one liners are so funny. Mike Myers is over the top as the cat. If you like Mr.Myers you will like this movie, if not don't bother watching it cause you will not get the jokes.

I don't know why people are so negative about this movie. My family and I think it is hilarious! It's a great movie for kids and adults. It also follows in the lines of the book. My whole family stops what they're doing to watch this movie when I put it on. It's one of the few "older kid movies" that my younger brother will watch. This is an awsome movie for anyone!
I love this movie.......2007-01-05

What a hoot!.......2006-12-18
I really disagree with those rating this movie poorly. My kids and I really love it! It is such a hoot to watch it again. The kids were watching it in the car on our way home the other day and I was cracking up just listening to the snappy one-liners. It is full-on fun from start to finish and I think any movie that delivers this is truly a worthwhile watch. We sure need some relief from all of the doom and gloom in the world. If you want some relief too, give it a watch. You'll be in stitches!

Bugsy: Extended Cut special features
Anyone who's heard how intense (or perhaps the word is "torturous") it can be to make a film with Warren Beatty will be captivated by the behind-the-scenes extras on the Bugsy: Extended Cut DVD. The highlight is the chat among screenwriter James Toback, director Barry Levinson, and star and co-producer Beatty on how the project and the final film came to be. Tellingly, Beatty is sitting quite apart from the other two, though they're in a semi-circular banquette at Perino's in Los Angeles.
 |
The conversation starts out slowly, with Toback, a genial blowhard, talking about losing the original script, but it picks up steam when the topic turns to the casting of the excellent actors in the film, including Sir Ben Kingsley and Elliott Gould, who also participate. And of course the most interesting off-screen component of the project--Beatty meeting his future wife, costar Annette Bening--is given a fun spotlight in the film. Levinson remembers that after meeting Bening for the first time, Beatty called him enthusiastically saying, "She's great, I love her, I'm going to marry her" ("you know, just a throwaway line," Levinson says, laughing), and Toback and Levinson and Bening herself talk about the signs the two were slowly falling in love. It's as dishy as anything you're likely to see about the notoriously private Beatty, and well worth the investment.
Other extras include several deleted scenes that are now included in the film (and unlike many other "extended cut" releases, actually enhance the depth of the story). One is a harrowing scene in which Bugsy contemplates, and nearly commits, suicide, via Russian roulette. Another is an amusing screen test that Siegal takes, thinking his roguish charm will translate to the big screen. Though it takes Beatty's considerable talents to make that happen, the earnestness of Siegal's outsider character is touching in glimpses like this. --A.T. Hurley

Warren Beatty and Annette Bening star in the incredible true story of Benjamin Bugsy Siegel, the playboy gangster who betrayed the Mob for love. A cold-blooded killer who dreamed of Hollywood stardom, a crazed patriot who plotted against Mussolini, and the brilliant visionary who carved Las Vegas out of the dry Nevada desert, Bugsy had it all. Until he fell for the one woman who wanted more. A critical masterpiece, BUGSY is a remarkable collaboration of Hollywood's best: director Barry Levinson, screenwriter James Toback, and an all-star supporting cast that includes Harvey Keitel, Oscar®-winner Ben Kingsley (Best Actor, Gandhi,1982), Joe Mantegna, and Elliott Gould. But at the center of itall is the white-hot romance between Bugsy and the insatiable starlet, Virginia Hill.
Customer Reviews:
wouldnt we all have rather seen a movie about moe green?.......2007-03-25
warren beatty indulged himself yet again (tho not as severely as in "dick tracy") in this overblown biopic of gangster bugsy siegel, whose fascination with celebrity led to his virtual one-man founding of las vegas as a gambling and entertainment mecca, and eventually to his murder by the mob once he grew too big for his britches. yet, in a movie paying homage to a man of excess, it is the excess which draws us in. the garishness works here; its a pity that theres no depth -- but then again, in a tribute to las vegas, maybe thats what director barry levinson was aiming for.
Bugsy (Unrated Extended Cut).......2007-03-08
It was a good movie, it fits well among these types of crime films mixing fact with fiction. The extended version adds to the interest.
Must-Have for 'Bugsy' Fans.......2006-12-28
'Bugsy' was one of my favorite films in 1991, mainly because of the sharp as a tack writing of James Toback and the smooth direction of Barry Levinson.
This new two-disc DVD set is a must-have for any fan of this film. The picture quality is vastly improved and more vibrant than the previous single-disc edition. It's a beautiful transfer. In my opinion, the movie is even stronger with the restored footage. There is one particularly chilling and powerful interaction between Beatty and Bening (**spoiler alert** - look for the suicide attempt) that probably should never have hit the cutting room floor. Such great acting.
There is also a very uniquely styled documentary on Disc Two. Screenwriter James Toback, Director Barry Levinson and star Beatty sit at a restaurant and discuss their memories of the process. Film critic Richard Schickel (of TIME magazine), Annette Bening, Ben Kingsley and Elliott Gould also share their thoughts. It is all extremely compelling.
This is the version of 'Bugsy' to own if you're going to.
And The Extended Version?.......2006-12-15
I'm reading all these reviews of a film I really loved
but haven't seen in years, "Bugsy." But I WANT TO KNOW
AND HEAR FROM OTHERS WHO HAVE seen the "EXTENDED
VERSION." All of these reviews are for the original theatrical version which doesn't help one who is deciding
if the "NEW" version really makes a difference.
So please, if you seen the "extended version" give us YOUR review!
Good-looking criminals.......2006-03-23
Bugsy is easily one of the most handsome pictures of the 90s, but on a second viewing it's a little less impressive than it seemed at the time. Siegel's life and crimes were too all-encompassing for anything less than a mini-series to do justice to it, but even so it's curious that for a film concentrating on his time in Hollywood and his fatal dream of turning Las Vegas into a gangster's paradise avoids his attempts to squeeze the studios dry by offering a union-fixing protection racket, one of the great untold Hollywood stories of the 40s. But what it does do it does well, offering centerstage to its charismatic, contradictory, impulsive and sporadically violent anti-hero and his equally contradictory lover. The violence isn't glossed over (indeed, Siegel's humiliation of one underling acts as a turn-on for the far from saintly dame), although Warren Beatty doesn't always quite convince when he's required to be pathologically sadistic.
The supporting cast are pretty impressive, especially Ben Kingsley before he disappeared up his own backside post-knighthood and Elliot Gould as a very simple stoolie, but it's surprising that Harvey Keitel was singled out for an Oscar nomination for his good but unremarkable work as Mickey Cohen. Still, it did result one of the best pre-Oscar interviews of all time: when asked what he'd do with his Oscar if he won, he casually replied that he'd smash it over Edward James Olmos' head (Keitel's wife had just left him for Olmos at the time). Maybe Keitel should've played Bugsy himself...

Writer-director Alan Parker's feature debut Bugsy Malone is a pastiche of American movies, a musical gangster comedy set in 1929, featuring prohibition, showgirls, and gang warfare, with references to everything from Some Like It Hot to The Godfather. Uniquely, though, all the parts are played by children, including an excellent if underused Jodie Foster as platinum-blonde singer Tallulah, Scott Baio in the title role and a nine-year-old Dexter Fletcher wielding a baseball bat. Cream-firing "spluge guns" sidestep any real violence and the movie climaxes cheerfully with the biggest custard pie fight this side of Casino Royale (1967).
Unfortunately for a musical, Paul Williams's score--part honky-tonk jazz homage, part 1970s Elton John-style pop--lets the side down with a lack of memorable tunes. Nevertheless, Parker's direction is spot on and the look of the film is superb, a fantasy movie-movie existing in the same parallel reality as The Cotton Club and Chicago. A rare British love letter to classic American cinema, Bugsy Malone remains a true original; in Parker's words "the work of a madman" and one of the strangest yet most stylish children's films ever made. --Gary S. Dalkin

Awesome Classic.......2007-05-07
This movie is a classic. It took me forever to find out the name to this movie. I remembered watching it as a kid and wanted to see it again. Definitely a classic that kids would enjoy today!
Great memories!!!.......2007-04-03
My mom took my brothers and I to see this movie in the theater when it first came out. I liked it so much that she bought me the cast album (which I still have, by the way,and I'm 39 years old!) so I could listen to the songs over and over. Now I have children of my own, and it's one of those movies I think all children should see. I was very happy to find it here! My copy arrived promptly. However, I wish it was an English publication (the box has the title written in Chinese, with a picture of Tallula on the front instead of the classic picture from the movie and album. Also I thought the movie could be a little clearer. It was not as sharp as it could of been. Oherwise, I recommend this movie for anyone who remembered seeing it as a kid, or if you have kids of your own. It's an absolute classic!!!!
Bugsy Malone.......2007-03-23

This thing is in English, OK?.......2007-03-13
Don't listen to ignoramus reviewers who apparently didn't bother to put the DVD in their player. I did. Guess what? It default played into English with no subtitles. It's even a pretty nice transfer.
I suppose if you are offended at the sight of (oh no!) Chinese characters on your DVD cases, you can pass on this item--even though English characters below clearly spell out Bugsy Malone. Or you can wait until some unknown time in the distant future when an American studio sells you their "Made in China" DVD copy that you can blissfully overlook in Wal-Mart.

Description
DONNIE BRASCO: Posing as jewel broker Donnie Brasco, FBI agent Joseph D. Pistone (Johnny Depp) is granted entrance into the violent mob family of aging hit man Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino). When his personal and professional lives collide, Pistone jeopardizes his marriage, his job life and, ultimately, the gangster mentor he has come to respect and admire. From acclaimed director Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral), and featuring an extraordinary supporting cast including Michael Madsen, Anne Heche, Bruno Kirby and James Russo. SNATCH: When jewel thief, Franky Four Fingers (Benicio Del Toro), takes a slight detour to London on route to delivering a huge stolen diamond to his boss in New York, he unwittingly sets off an avalanche of sinister and comic events that wind their way through the rough and tumble worlds of bare-knuckle boxing, Irish gypsies, pawn shops, pig farming and... a stray dog. SNATCH, Guy Ritchie's brilliant follow up to his critically acclaimed Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, exposes us to his hip and helter-skelter view of London's gangster underbelly. Ritchie's characteristic fast-paced and constantly twisting story features a madcap ensemble cast of larger-than-life characters, including Jason Statham, an unlicensed boxing promoter; Stephen Graham, his bumbling sidekick; Alan Ford, the local underworld kingpin; Dennis Farina, Franky's no-nonsense boss; Vinnie Jones, a legendary thug; Rade Sherbedgia, a psycho double-crossing Russian; and Brad Pitt, in a hilarious turn as a fast-talking gypsy bare-knuckle boxer. BUGSY: Warren Beatty and Annette Bening star in the incredible true story of Benjamin Bugsy Siegel, the playboy gangster who betrayed the Mob for love. But at the center of it all is the white-hot romance between Bugsy and the insatiable starlet, Virginia Hill. THE AMERICAN GANGSTER: This unique documentary examines the origins of organized crime in America with actual film footage of such notorious underworld figures as John Dillinger, Al Capone and Bugsy Siegel.

Description
This innovative drama from writer and director James Toback (BUGSY, BLACK AND WHITE) follows the travails of Alan Jensen (Adrian Grenier), a Harvard student determined to live life to the fullest and find the ultimate truth. He gets high regularly, and is sleeping with Holy Cross cheerleader Cindy Bandolini (Sarah Michelle Gellar), who also happens to be a mobster's daughter. Simultaneously, Alan is carrying on an illicit affair with his philosophy professor, Chesney Cort (Joey Lauren Adams), a woman with a vast sexual appetite. When his parents lose their Kansas home in a tornado, Alan is desperate to help them financially. He turns to Cindy's father for a loan and is soon entrenched in a high-stakes gambling scheme. But all is not as it seems and Alan soon finds himself in over his head with many aspects of his life: his drug use, the women in his life, and even the FBI. Grenier is endearing as the truth-seeking Alan, and as a tough-talking Mafia princess, Gellar steps far away from her television persona as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Eric Stoltz and Rebecca Gayheart lend their talents in supporting roles that add to the film's twisting storyline.

--Gary S. Dalkin
