Hollywood's legendary "woman's director," George Cukor (The Women, The Philadelphia Story), transformed Audrey Hepburn into street-urchin-turned-proper-lady Eliza Doolittle in this film version of the Lerner and Loewe musical. Based on George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion, My Fair Lady stars Rex Harrison as linguist Henry Higgins (Harrison also played the role, opposite Julie Andrews, on stage), who draws Eliza into a social experiment that works almost too well. The letterbox edition of this film on video certainly pays tribute to the pageantry of Cukor's set, but it also underscores a certain visual stiffness that can slow viewer enthusiasm just a tad. But it's really star wattage that keeps this film exciting, that and such great songs as "On the Street Where You Live" and "I Could Have Danced All Night." Actor Jeremy Brett, who gained a huge following later in life portraying Sherlock Holmes, is quite electric as Eliza's determined suitor. --Tom Keogh

Way Over-Rated, and Often VERY Unpleasant!.......2007-06-29

Yes, it is a nice Cinderella story, and Audrey plays a fine role.There is an excellent message about the ingrained Brit Class System circa 1910..And there are some nice costumes, mainly women's hats, at the Horse race..Add to this a few memorable songs..So what is the problem with this ? Mainly, the near- nauseating character of Higgins, an old fashioned snob and misogynist of the ugliest type, who we have to watch sneer and scold for the better part of two hours! Not pretty! True, Pickering is a nice counterpoint, and really a decent old chap, but Higgins is the main character, and to watch and listen to this old goat goes well beyond a pleasant way to spend time! The song and dance numbers are hardly even third rate. Any comparison with a 1940's-50's MGM musical puts this one to shame! No dancing to speak of, and very low production quality..Then again, this was Warner, not known for musicals!..And there is a claustrophic sense here that says , "How can I get away from this miserable phonetics teacher?" It's near impossible..I can think of at least 30 musicals far and away above this, not just MGM, but Fred and Ginger, and so forth..In fact, 3-stars may be too kind for this one, since it is way below the hype!..Also, check out the 1930's PYGMALION with Wendy Hiller and Leslie Howard, and you can easily see how almost the entire movie (MY FAIR LADY) was completely taken from PYGMALION, including the sets and dialogue..About the only thing new is the songs, which are fun and amusing, but not really in the top tier of great musical tunes.

Is the Creator Responsible for His Creation?.......2007-06-12

I had not watched this marvelous movie for many years when I took the opportunity to watch it again. The movie is a little stiff in places, but that stiffness seemed, to me, to enhance the formality of English high society. Audrey Hepburn belies that stiffness with her free-spirited characterization of Eliza Doolittle. Eliza contrasts nicely with Henry Higgin's mother, played by veteran actor Gladys Cooper ("The Happiest Millionaire," "The Song of Bernadette," and "The List of Adrian Messenger"). Mrs. Higgins is quite proper and perfect in every situation. Henry, played by the incomparable Sir Rex Harrison, is disdainful and aloof. Henry believes he is the remote scientific observer who can categorize and stereotype everyone, and is not affected by his surroundings.

A problem arises when Henry Higgins bets Colonel Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White, "Ten Little Indians" (1965) and "In Search of the Castaways") that he could take anyone, such as Eliza Doolittle, and turn them into something like a lady's maid or a shop girl. Colonel Pickering takes Henry up on his bet, volunteering to finance the experiment.

Looking at the next part of this movie with five decades of life, I quickly saw the problem that Henry was getting into. Henry was taking a human life adjusted to a certain set of surroundings, modifying that life so that it no longer fit in, and was then prepared to cast that life adrift once he proved his point. Henry failed to see that he did anything wrong, and therein lies the irony and pathos of this movie. The question a first-time watcher asks is whether Henry will be able to grow up at last and realize that people require compassion and empathy and are more than science experiments.

In addition to a marvelous story, this movie boasts wonderful music and excellent sets. Though some of Audrey Hepburn's singing survived, Marni Nixon sang most of the music attributed to Hepburn. Nixon's singing was phenomenal and her singing voice is close enough to Hepburn's that it sounds as though Hepburn could be singing.

Other singing numbers contained extensive choreography on expansive sets. Two complexly choreographed songs that come to mind are "Get Me to the Church on Time" and the "Ascot Gavotte."

This movie featured an array of sets depicting street scenes and interior scenes. Though the street scenes were excellent, my favorite set in the movie has always been Henry Higgin's incredible library. I would love to have his library in my house, though duplicating that library would be incredibly expensive.

This movie won 20 awards, which includes eight Oscars. Rex Harrison won the Best Actor Oscar and the movie won the Best Picture Oscar, both highly coveted awards. Harrison won many other awards for this film, and "My Fair Lady" became the most awarded movie of 1965.

Of course, awards do not necessarily mean a film is either good or great. However, Rex Harrison, Audrey Hepburn and Wilfrid Hyde-White have such incredible acting skills and such screen presence that they make this film a joy to watch. I was spell-bound as I watched Audrey Hepburn become Eliza Doolittle and capture the hearts of everyone in the movie. Rex Harrison was incredible as Henry Higgins. This movie was either Harrison's best, or one of his best.

The story is also captivating. Henry Higgins experiments with the life of a human being. What Henry Higgins failed to realize is that once he became involved with his subject, he lost his objectivity and learned compassion. Love can come from compassion. The only thing that surprised me in this viewing of the movie is that I previously had not realized how early in the movie that Eliza Doolittle had come to love Henry Higgins.

"My Fair Lady" is one of the best musicals of all time. The combination of story, acting, singing and sets is amazing. Fans of musicals and love stories will enjoy this movie, even on multiple viewings.

Does not work!.......2007-04-11

The DVD does not work in Ireland so it is absolutely useless!! I should have been made aware of this when I was purchasing the product. I would like to be refunded in full for the three DVDs I have purchased: My Fair Lady, Paris when it Sizzles and Breakfast at Tiffanys (purchased at the same time)
Also the packaging costs were not displayed until i had entered my credit card number and were much too expensive.
Overall i am extremely disappointed with my experience and I expect to be compensated for this.

Maybe it doesn't quite live up to its sterling reputation, and maybe the leading man and director were slightly miscast. But who cares? Roman Holiday is the film that brought Audrey Hepburn to prominence, and the world movie audience went weak at the knees. The endlessly charming Hepburn had her first starring role in this sweet romance, playing a European princess on an official tour through Rome. Frustrated by her lack of connection to the real world, she slips away from her protective handlers and goes on a spree, aided by a tough-guy news reporter (Gregory Peck). Director William Wyler, more at home with such heavy-going, Oscar-winning classics as The Best Years of Our Lives and Ben- Hur, doesn't always keep the champagne bubbles afloat, and the Peck role would have fit Cary Grant like a silk glove. But the film is great fun, the location shooting is irresistible, and Hepburn embodies an image of chic style that would rule for the rest of the fifties. No coincidence: she won an Oscar, and so did veteran costume designer Edith Head. --Robert Horton

How many people know Dalton Trumbo actually wrote the screenplay? .......2007-04-17

I remember the first time I saw this movie, as a child, with the absolutely radiant Audrey Hepburn in her first major role as the naive, protected Princess determined to have her day of freedom and to escape from her overscheduled, dreary routine.
How lucky Hepburn was to have Gregory Peck as a costar, a man who was gallant (and wise) enough to insist she be listed as a costar, right up there alongside him in the credits. The studio wanted to use the words "and introducing Audrey Hepburn" in the credits but Peck believed -and turned out to be right- that she would win the Academy Award for her excellent portrayal, which may seem a bit over the top to today's audiences but absolutely charmed viewers at the time (I still love the movie).
The story behind this movie is nearly as fascinating as the movie itself and it is worth buying this Collector's Edition to get some of that behind the scenes info in the special sections. Frank Capra was set to direct the movie but when he found out that the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo was the scriptwriter, he bailed. That's when Wyler stepped in, letting Trumbo do the writing but having another writer "front" for him. It took years for Trumbo to be duly recognized.
I do believe this film is best seen in black and white, as it was intentionally filmed this way. Why? Because it was shot on location, in Rome, at a time when movies were often filmed in Hollywood, with backdrops to give the illusion of another country. But not THIS time. However, Wyler feared that if the movie was shot in color, Rome might overshadow the story itself. As it is, some have called Rome the third "character" in this film and it benefits greatly by being shot on location.

This movie can not possibly work.
It has got too much stacked against it.
First the writer. As you should know from the movie Capote, the man was something that Amazon does not allow me to write. I have tried to read his short stories and found them awfull, unoriginal, boring versions of Southern Gothic. I remember that I found his great success 'In Cold Blood' terribly boring, although that was 30 years ago. How can he have written anything good? (Also I am of course biased against him, being an admirer of Gore Vidal.)
Then the story: a schmaltzy romance between two pretty people of questionable morality. Even the promise of Southern Gothic, the 'husband' from redneck country, turns out schmaltzy.
Then the mediocre actors: Audrey just could not act, despite her special beauty and charme and gracefulness, she just was not up to it. Peppard's best moment was when he managed to look like Warren Beatty.
And then the awful scenes written for Mickey Rooney as Japanese neighbour. How disgusting can you get, how tasteless.
You throw all this into a movie and what you get is somewhat different from the sum of its parts. You get a charming romantic comedy, a genre that I detest normally. Maybe I have been infected by a bad dose of Audreyphilia? My teenage daugher definitely is infected. She forced me to watch it with her. She watches it every day now since she saw it first time a week ago. When will this end?

i have wanted to see this movie for years because i had always heard such wonderful things about it. what a bust. holly golightly is just too flakey to be able to follow in this movie. totally unrealistic plot. and really it was going no where. don't bother with this movie. it was a real disappointment.

Why is this movie considered a classic?.......2007-06-24

THIS MOVIE IS THE BEST!!! at being terrible!

This movie is, frankly, one of the most uninteresting, and utterly boring movies I have ever seen. Seriously, this movie makes reruns of c-span seem as exciting as "Raiders of the Lost Ark". This movie does not even begin to have what could be loosely described as a plot. Instead it focuses on the uninteresting life of a woman who calls herself "Holly". It focuses on various occurrences in her life, primarily on her love interests (which are contingent entirely on money). However the man that falls in love with her seems not to care, lending to one extremely stupid seeming character. When Hepburn throws her cat out of a cab into the rain, it left me wondering why he didn't do the same to Hepburn. Her character is so unlikeable it's nearly impossible to describe. At one point she states "lets each do something we haven't done before", then states "but I couldn't think of anything I haven't done before". At this point, I couldn't contain myself anymore. I yelled at the screen "How about something interesting to watch! Neither of you have done that before!"

All in all, the lack of a plot, unlikeable characters, and mediocre scripting lead to an outright dull and uninteresting movie. There should be a warning on the box that says "hide all sharp objects before attempting to view this movie" because chances are, you will be stabbing yourself in the eyes before you've finished this one. Whoever decided this movie was a classic should be shot!

A true classic film........2007-05-26

This is one of Audrey Hepburn's finest films. It is based on the novel by Truman Capote set in early 1960's New York City. Hepburn plays Holly Golitely, a stylish New York socialite with a hidden past (which couldn't be more different than her life today). Her character is quirky, vulnerable, sweet, and lonely, while at the same time is selfish, naive, and strong. She considers herself to be "a wild thing" that can never be tamed. She detachedly "dates" several older men who give her money which is how she makes her living. While in search of a glamorous life and a wealthy husband, she is at the same time is afraid of true love. She won't commit to anything, even naming her cat.

Whenever she is very upset, she dresses up in her finest, most glamorous dresses and jumps in a cab to the famous Tiffany's jewelry store. As she dreams of owning the diamonds someday, she thinks "nothing bad could ever happen to you here."

Along comes Paul Varjak, played by George Peppard, who is a writer and a kept man that moves into an apartment in Holly's building. He lives off the money that he receives from his older, married lover. He develops a friendship with Holly that turns to love. He understands Holly's vulnerablity and wants to help her, but he has a difficult time trying to love this "wild thing".

Though the film is over forty years old and looks dated now, it still stands the test of time. The scene where Audrey Hepburn sits in a window singing "Moon River" is a truly magical moment of film history. It is a great romantic movie and the ending will bring a tear to your eye.

A Truly Great Film.......2007-07-03

This is a great film with unforgettable performances -- a classic by any definition. You can't really compare it to the drek that normally released as a movie today. Do yourself a tremendous favor and buy it!

Medieval dysfunction.......2007-06-28

It is Christmas, 1183 and aging King Henry II of England meets with his estranged wife Eleanor of Aquitaine to decide which of their three sons will inherit the kingdom upon Henry's death. Each has a favorite and one must be chosen, and through deception, torment, connivance and deceit the "family" follows through in their respective roles. It is a wonderful story and though the outcome is in doubt, one thing is certain....there will never be another Christmas like this one!

Strong performances are universally good in "The Lion in Winter" and Katharine Hepburn earned a much deserved Academy Award. It's a shame that Peter O'Toole didn't win as well, as the two are equally matched for spark-flying drama. A third dazzling performance is turned in by a young Timothy Dalton as King Philip of France.

Though as much as the drama is perfected, "The Lion in Winter" (1968) hasn't particularly worn the test of time well. The dialogue is kitschy, (sometimes unintentionally funny) and the dysfunction is all too broad. Emotions change faster than you can snap your fingers, so many of the scenes don't play out as well as they should. That said however, "The Lion in Winter" is worth seeing for Hepburn, O'Toole and Dalton. On that score, you won't be disappointed.

Shot on location in France and the British Isles, and based on an excoriating play by Richard Goldman, "Lion" is a wit-fueled, magnificently acted parable of power-lust and extreme family dysfunction. O'Toole and Oscar winner Hepburn are superb as the grizzled, sarcastic regent and his cunning wife, locked in a never-ending exchange of venomous criticisms. A youthful Anthony Hopkins, in a spirited turn, pops off some of the best insults. Aside from the endless machinations of various family members, Harvey adds period flavor with authentic costumes and gloomy, tone-perfect settings. When this "Lion" roars, you'll be hooked.

"The Lion in Winter" is one of the best films ever made. It has the language, scope and beauty of a great Shakespearean play. It also has two magnificent performances by O'Toole (King Henry II) and Hepburn (Queen Eleanor)and a fine early film appearance by Anthony Hopkins (Richard the Lionhearted). It concerns the struggle of Henry's three sons to take the crown and King Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) is willing to use Richard's love for him to destroy the kingdom.

Great storyline. Untoppable Performances. I keep buying copies, because my friends keep making off with them. This one dosn't dissapoint.

Yes, there is not a US edition of The African Queen. So be happy with what we have got in this Asian import. The picture and sound are just fine. The DVD played perfectly in my player, and turing off the subtitles were as easy as reading the instructions on the menu.

So until we get the 2 disc special editon here in the US, order this import edition. It's a must and well worth the money.

It is my understanding that the copyrights for "The African Queen" is privately held which may be why it has never been released on DVD in the USA,i.e., the copyright owner has not released their rights for reproduction. Just recently "Marie Antoinette" with Norma Shearer was put to DVD and that movie, although not on par with "The African Queen" is one of my favorites. Again, the copyright may have been privately held which precluded earlier adaptation to DVD.

Also, I agree with the reviewer regarding "Widescreen". The old movies will not come out in widescreen because that is not how they were filmed.

I just wanted to add in my support of having this DVD released in the US. There is so much crap out there on DVD - why are the classics being held back? I would buy this in a second if it were given a proper release.

DVD was good til the last 5 minutes or so, then it started to skip. I reversed for a few minutes and restarted and this time it went all the way to the end without a problem. I will watch it again and if the problem occurs again, I will send it back for a replacement or refund.

George Cukor's pitch-perfect adaptation of Philip Barry's hit play marked a triumphant Hollywood comeback for Kate (having earlier been labeled "box-office poison" by exhibitors), and an Oscar-winning vehicle for up-and-coming star James Stewart, wonderful as a fish out of water in high society. Though overlooked by the Academy, Grant is every bit as good as the raffish C.K., while Hepburn shines in what may be her signature role. Don't miss Roland Young's hilarious turn as naughty Uncle Willie. Sly and sophisticated, this title stands as one of our finest screen comedies.

Tremendous Aplomb.......2007-06-01

No need to chronicle the miracle that this vehicle wrought in Kate Hepburn's career, sufficing to say that Howard Hughes bought the rights for her and she took it from success on Broadway to Hollywood gold with tremendous aplomb. She insisted on control of director (Cukor) and co-stars (Grant and Stewart) and her gambit paid big dividends. The rest is movie magic.

Hepburn portrays a Main Line divorcee on the eve of Wedding Number Two. Grant is Husband Number One and Stewart is the initially-under-cover reporter there to chronicle `An Intimate Day with a Society Bride' for "Spy" magazine. Hepburn's character is the one to watch as she grows from a distant goddess to a flesh and blood woman, but it is fair to say that one and all undergo some pretty rooty tooty transformations before The End.

Marvelous moments abound--it is playwright Philip Barry's masterpiece, after all. Favorites...

Hepburn and Virginia Weidler's send up of the Main Line drawl, complete with the lockjaw pose is dead on--people in Bryn Mawr and Chester County Horse Country still talk like that if you can believe it.

Droll moments include the witticisms about South Bend (Hepburn says vaguely, "It sounds like dancing, doesn't it?), about Duluth (Hepburn again: Duluth. That must be a lovely spot. It's west of here, isn't it?), of Stewart's friends ("Of whom you have many, I'm sure...").

And Weidler's over the top rendition of "Lydia, the Tattooed Lady".

The witty repartee holds throughout the film, and at one point, perhaps the key moment in the film, Barry gives Hepburn's character Tracy Lord the best line in this or any film, "The time to make up one's mind about someone is (pause) never."

The ending is one of the three or four ideal wedding endings in film, along with "The Graduate", "It Happened One Night" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral".

P. S. The play was remade as the musical "High Society" with Bing, Blue Eyes and soon-to-be Princess Grace, which is not half bad. But "The Philadelphia Story" is better, and among the best 20 films of all time.

You cannot say enough good things about this movie!! Cary Grant was I think snubbed for the Oscar but Jimmy Stewart well deserved it too!! Dinah (the litttle sister) is hilarious! Katharine Hepburn of course shines and her presence is what makes the movie so fantastic!

#51 on the American Film Institute's Top 100 List, "The Philadelphia Story" is a 1940 comedy that has never lost its popularity. It's the film that rekindled Katherine Hepburn's then-ailing film career, the only movie James Stewart ever won an Oscar for, and a movie that Cary Grant demanded a huge salary for. Surprisingly, the movie is actually funny to this very day.

Grant plays C.K. Dexter Haven, a millionaire who has recently separated from his wife Tracy Lord (Hepburn). Now, Tracy is getting remarried and Dexter has hired two people from the gossip magazine Spy to cover the marriage. They are Macaulay Connor (Stewart) and Elizabeth Imbrie. Neither one is happy to be there. Connor is on the verge of quitting his job at the Spy, as he fancies himself a writer and is sick of writing gossip articles. Elizabeth fancies herself a painter and is sick of taking photographs of rich people. Pretty soon, Connor finds himself falling for Tracy as Dexter finds himself falling for her again.

Stewart deserved his Oscar as he steals every scene he's in. As I said, the film is still very funny to this day (a rarity, since comedy has changed so much over the years). Anyway, "The Philadelphia Story" is not my favorite film of all time. It think there's plenty of films on the list placed beneath it that are much better, but "The Philadelphia Story" is a charming film that is definitely worth your time.

Considered by many to represent a low point in Steven Spielberg's career, 1990's Always did suggest something of a temporary drift in the director's sensibility. A remake of the classic Spencer Tracy film A Guy Named Joe, Always stars Richard Dreyfuss as a Forest Service pilot who takes great risks with his own life to douse wildfires from a plane. After promising his frightened fiancée (Holly Hunter) to keep his feet on the ground and go into teaching, Dreyfuss's character is killed during one last flight. But his spirit wanders restlessly, hopelessly attached to and possessive of Hunter, who can't see or hear him. Then the real conflict begins: a trainee pilot (Brad Johnson), a likable doofus, begins wooing a not-unappreciative Hunter--and it becomes Dreyfuss's heavenly mandate to accept, and even assist in, their budding romance. The trouble with the film is a certain airlessness, a hyper-inventiveness in every scene and sequence that screams of Spielberg's self-education in Hollywood classicism. Unlike the masters he is constantly quoting and emulating in Always, he forgets to back off and let the movie breathe on its own sometimes, which would better serve his clockwork orchestration of suspense and comedy elsewhere. Still, there are lovely passages in this film, such as the unforgettable look on Dreyfuss's face a half-second before fate claims him. Spencer Tracy's last performance was in this well-meaning, handsome film by Stanley Kramer about a pair of white parents (Tracy and Katharine Hepburn) trying to make sense of their daughter's impending marriage to an African American doctor (Sidney Poitier). The film has been knocked over the years for padding conflict and stoking easy liberalism by making Poitier's character in every socioeconomic sense a good catch: But what if Kramer had made this stranger a factory worker? Would the audience still find it as easy to accept a mixed-race relationship? But there's no denying the drawing power of this movie, which gets most of its integrity from the stirring performances of Tracy and Hepburn. When the former (who had been so ill that the production could not get completion insurance) gives a speech toward the end about race, love, and much else, it's impossible not to be affected by the last great moment in a great actor's life and career. --Tom Keogh

A courageous movie.......2007-06-30

In the context of the times in which it was made, this movie is even more amazing than it first appears--and it is very courageous on first appearances, so that is saying a lot!

Marriage between ethically diverse people was still illegal in quite a number of states, racism and all the terrible crimes it fosters was rampant. Into this maelstrom came a movie about two well-educated and very intelligent people who wish to get married. They deliberately made the doctor (Sidney Poitier) a paragon, so that it would be clear that any hesitation on her parents' part would be solely because he was Black.

My favorite parts are the beginning, when they arrive in California and go to her home and meet her mother (Kate Hepburn), and the end, when her father (Spencer Tracey) does his amazing speech, which earned him an Oscar (and rightly so).

The prejudice of the art gallery "lady" (note the quote marks) was accurate for the times (and, sadly, is still accurate at times) and well done by the actress in that role.

"Those who do not learn from history..." Let us keep watching this movie, so that we can learn, remember, and avoid sinking into the same mire again. And let us applaud the unknown people of courage, who did what was portrayed in this movie--trailblazers and pioneers in a wilderness no less challenging because it was subtle.

Truly romantic.......2007-06-10

Sidney Poiter is magnificent and always awe-inspiring, but the real draw of the movie is watching the interaction between Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. When their real-life romance and difficult relationship is taken into account, their characters are given an extra dimension of honesty. This is particularly true of Tracy's speech at the end of the movie about what it means to love someone regardless of the circumstances. Very touching, brought tears to my eyes.

A Beautiful Film.......2007-05-07

I recently read a biography of Sidney Poitier which emphasized his role as "The Black Actor" of his time, and what this meant culturally and politicaly during the conservative 1950's and the turbulent 1960's. Poitier's mere presence in a film during this time assured black audiences that "Yes, there were roles of merit for blacks in Hollywood" while simultaneously letting white people know that all blacks were not dangerous, sex-craved animals, or buffoonish syncophants, but upstanding citizens like you and me. It seemed at times that Sidney Poitier, The Icon, overshadowed many of his screen endeavors, pushing the film's plotline into the background (with the exception of "In The Heat Of The Night") Which brings me to "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner". Released in 1967 (it was the THIRD box-office hit for Poitier in a single year. A feat no other actor since, with the exception of Tom Cruise in 1996, has accomplished) an extremely tumultous year when the nation grappled with civil rights and Vietnam, "Guess Who" provided a fresh breath of air. Its the story of a prominent black doctor, John Prentice, who falls in love with a younger white girl,Joanna. He is 37, she is 23. The couple arrive at the girls' parents' house to announce to her parents their marriage plans. But the good doctor has a secret that he is keeping from his fiance: He has promised himself that if the father (Spencer Tracy) disagrees he will not marry her. He has come to this conclusion because he knows full well the problems the two of them will face as an interracial couple, and if they have disapproving in-laws to contend with as well, the marriage might not survive. This particular aspect of Poitier's character is what nailed it for me. What a strong statement to make, and the reserve to back it! How many of us who have been fitfully in love would EVER make a proposal like this?! Most people would say to Hell with the in laws, but this is what seperated Poitier from most stars of his day and which contributed to his overall popularity. Upon its release, the film was not a CRITICAL favorite, but it was certainly a box-office fav. The problem most critics had with the film was the preposterous love story itself. "What would an accomplished doctor who had been married once want with a young, naive girl 14 years his junior? " asked many critics (as if you really had to ponder THAT one!)I have never discovered why the director Stanley Kramer put this age difference into the film in the first place, the only answer I have is that Katherine Houghton was the niece of the Great Hepburn. Nepotism strikes again, right? But that was not the most gnawing question in the film. Most critics simply missed the point. A point that the movie-going public got: It is a FANTASY. Kramer over emphasized everything, from the techni-color skies to the immaculate skin complexions of his stars, to let the public know just how ridiculous skin color prejudices (and prejudices in general) are. Poitier's character is so PERFECT, that the ONLY problem Tracy and Hepburn have with him is his skin color. Brilliant. Yes the film is dated a little, but unfortunately it is still a timely and beautiful film.

Times Sure Have Changed!.......2007-04-23

I remember watching this movie for the first time with my mother. We were shocked, but tried to keep an open mind. Today it is not shocking at all. Times have really changed for the better. We still have a long way to go. I thought about showing this movie to my students, however, they wouldn't understand what the big deal was as we did the first time. Still, it's a good movie and it has a powerful message.

Kay Thompson Keeps This 'Funny Face' from Sagging.......2007-06-12

Better state up front that I'm not a huge musicals fan. There've been a few I love (The Sound of Music comes to mind) but mostly I find them frivolous and tedious. Why, you might wonder, did I watch this, then? Don't know, 'zactly. Read a little squib about it somewhere, the library had it on hand and, voila, there it was in my video player one night.

That said, I can't say I enjoyed it all that much, though it contained one great surprise: Kay Thompson--who, I just learned, was the author of the wonderful "Eloise" books, and who portrays fashion magazine powerhouse Maggie Prescott (a high-energy prototype of Meryl Streep's "Devil Wears Prada" Miranda Priestly character)--was the shining star in this film as far as I was concerned.(Phew! Thought I'd never get to the end of that sentence!). Thompson could sing, dance, AND act--a triumverate her two co-stars each fell apart on one way or another. Astaire could dance up a storm, but his singing is mediochre and his acting, well, let's just say he's (for the most part) likeable anyway. Hepburn is a marvelous actress, an (surprise, surprise!) excellent dancer, but her singing....eh.

Well. Put these three together into a powdered sugar of a show with excellent set design, fun dance numbers, but forgettable tunes and you get a three star out of five result (raised up from two, to my mind, just because of the star power of Hepburn/Astaire, and the fun, high-powered performance by Thompson.)

I have to agree with others here who were given the willies by the age difference between Astaire and Hepburn (the same feeling one got with the earlier Daddy Long Legs, where they paired AARP-member Astaire with the pre-pubescent Leslie Caron...What were they thinking?) But the lovers' lack of chemistry doesn't stop there. I never believed for an instant that they were in love in the movie and, when they sail away on the raft surrounded by swans and doves with (no doubt) clipped wings that prevented them from flying away in fear and disgust, I found myself snorting haughtily at the whole premise.

Watch it, not for a show that's going to wow you, but for the entertaining dance numbers, the colorful sets, and for Kay Thompson.

I had to write a review because I want to respond the people who don't like the Astaire/Hepburn relationship. It's just a vehicle to get these two actors together in a song and dance movie to showcase Fred Astaire. She dances well which was a surprise to me. So he was somewhat older? He was a monstrous star and he still danced really well.

Having said that the story was a bit too predictable. The overall feel of the film was just OK. Can't fault the Gershwin music though and the dancing was good.

Charade is a great classic for any age group. Picture quality was excellent. Whenever you have Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, George Kelly, James Coburn and Walter Matthau in the same movie how can you go wrong. I rate this movie 10 stars.

This Hitchcock homage provides a last glimpse of Cary as leading man. At sixty, the actor still brings off his trademark persona superbly. Hepburn is also in top form as the put-upon damsel in distress. Deftly combining mystery, romance, and humor, director Donen creates a chic, sophisticated mood via gorgeous Paris locations and a smooth Mancini score. The villains are mean enough to be taken seriously, but exhibit enough idiosyncrasies to seem human (Coburn has particular fun as Tex). As top-drawer entertainment, "Charade" is the real thing.

I didn't want to write a complete review of the movie. No need, as so many have echoed my sentiments in previous reviews that this is a first rate movie, with first rate comedic/romantic actors. Hepburn, Grant, Matthau, Kennedy, and Coburn are superb. The dialogue is fun and campy. The plot twists are classic, and the great 60's feel, helped mightily by the amazing Henry Mancini score and Parisien setting are unforgettable and unmatched since. I must point out to buyers, and I likely am repeating other collectors' comments (I didn't read down far enough), that the hi-def digital transfer is incomplete in some places. The first instance I notice this is during 'Bartholomew's' (Matthau's) first meeting with Mrs. Lampert (Hepburn) at the embassy (20:20-30), when he is cleaning a stain from his tie. The image goes inexplicably from clear and warmly lit, to grainy and out of contrast, then back again in the next scene. A very short interval, but strange for a Criterion disc. The other instance of note is right at the end when the last few seconds of the final scene morph with the visuals and credits, not serious, but still odd. There were likely some other spots. I didn't go back and micro-analyze the DVD frame by frame. But, for the serious Criterion fan, it is worth noting. I apologize if such has already been pointed out. It still does not change the fact that this is one of the best comedy/mystery/whodunnits of all time. Enjoy!

I'm a Cary Grant fan so I natuarally think this is an enjoyable movie.
