Most thrillers can be judged on their plots, but with The Clearing the plot is only a frame for three excellent performances. The story is driven by the kidnapping of a retired businessman (Robert Redford) by a former disgruntled employee (Willem Dafoe, Shadow of the Vampire). But while half of the movie follows these two men as they wend their way towards a cabin in the woods, the other half observes the businessman's wife (Helen Mirren, the Prime Suspect series) as she copes with both the kidnapping and the secrets it accidentally reveals. Redford and Dafoe play a skillful cat and mouse game as each tries to manipulate the other, but the movie's emotional core is Mirren, a superb actress who turns in yet another rich and layered performance. The emphasis on character heightens the suspense, making The Clearing taut and compelling. --Bret Fetzer

A talking baseball and a talking bat might not be the most likely characters to inspire a personal revelation about perseverance and self-esteem, but in Everyone's Hero it's just those two things that help young Yankee Irving (Jake T. Austin) overcome his reputation as a baseball loser and become a true American hero. A ten-year old spurned by the neighborhood kids because of his repeated strike-outs at bat, Yankee is at a point of personal crisis. A chance encounter with a talking foul ball named Screwie (Rob Reiner) and some time spent with his father (Mandy Patinkin), who's a janitor for the New York Yankees, gives Yankee cause for some serious reflection. When Babe Ruth's famous bat "Darlin'" (Whoopi Goldberg) is stolen by opposing teammate Lefty Maginnis (William H. Macy) and Yankee's father is fired as a result of the theft, it suddenly falls to Yankee and his new friend Screwie to find Darlin' and return her to Babe Ruth before the Chicago Cubs loose the final game of the World Series to the New York Yankees. The combined efforts of Screwie, Darlin', and new friend Marti Brewster (Raven-Symoné) aid Yankee in conquering his own self-doubt and infuse him with the self-confidence and strength to profoundly affect both his family and the entire baseball world. Produced by Christopher Reeve, this CGI animated presentation features a great cast of characters and voice talent, and an important message about the power of perseverance. 4 out of 5 stars Good Family entertainment.......2007-07-03

It seems that almost all the "Family" movies put out these days have a 'PG' rating which means you still have to censor it for small children. My wife is a kindergarten teacher and is always looking for actual 'G' rated films that she can show in class without getting complaints from parents or the movie being b-grade, straight to DVD, crap. This movie isn't a blockbuster, but it's very entertaining and safe for everyone. I even laughed out loud at several parts so it can appeal to the whole family. It's a great movie to have in your collection that you don't have to worry about your kids learning bad things from.

5 out of 5 stars a fun family film.......2007-07-03

my oppinion: Everyone's Hero is an outstanding movie and is to be enjoyed by everyone of all ages.

About The film: Everyone's Hero is about a boy's father who is fired by yankee statium because the great babe ruth's bat was stolen on his shift now Yankee the boy goes out to find the thief and redem his fathers name and on the way he runs into a talking baseball and bat who help him out.

This movie was directed produced by the great christopher reeves and his wife. this movie is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Great family film!!!.......2007-07-02

A film worth seeing. I especially loved Christopher and Dana's loyal friend Robin Williams whose voice is used for the envious team owner of the Chicago Cubs, Napoleon Cross. Robin at his request is not credited for the role.

5 out of 5 stars If ya like baseball ...you'll love this film!.......2007-06-09

This little film is a little charmer. Thought provoking, endearing, totally wild and entertaining all mixed into one. If you like baseball at all, you'll have a blast... if you LOVE baseball, this film will touch you with the way it weaves history into the game! Great for kids, cool to watch with them and talk about the game! About the game that is and the game that was! There's a reason why it had such a brilliant cast and production team (I mean, c'mon - Christopher Reeve, Dana Reeve (a little gift they left behind), Rob Reiner, Whoopi Goldberg, Forest Whitaker, William H. Macy, Brian Dennehy, Mandy Patinkin, Joe Torre... !! Beautiful in it's simplicity... great characters...GREAT storytelling! Fun fun stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-24

This was an excellent story with a moral. It was produced by Christopher and Dana Reeve and Dana's voice is in it.

Partly inspired by 1948's The Big Clock and its nominal 1987 remake No Way Out, the Denzel Washington thriller Out of Time is quite enjoyable if you ignore its implausible plotting. Like those earlier films, this reunion of Washington and his Devil in a Blue Dress director Carl Franklin is about a man--in this case the police chief (Washington) of sleepy Banyan Key, Florida--who falls into a trap set by others, sinks into legal quicksand of his own making, and must race the clock to extricate himself from a series of incriminating setbacks. The Florida setting adds welcome character to the potboiler plot, and Washington's screen-cred makes it easy to overlook the absurdities of rookie writer David Collard's screenplay. Eva Mendes is sharp and sensible as Washington's estranged wife (do you think they'll reconcile for a happy ending?), and the talented John Billingsley--whose portrayal of "Dr. Phlox" on TV's Enterprise is vastly underrated--is a constant delight as Washington's medical examiner, beer buddy and wily co-conspirator. It's hardly a classic, but Out of Time goes well with a big tub of popcorn. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Thriller.......2007-05-16

Denzel Washington gives his usual excellent performance as a Florida sheriff on the verge of divorce. In the meantime he has been having an affair with a married woman. He goes with her to a doctor's appointment and she is told that she has inoperable cancer and will die within a year. She is later told that she can go out the country for an expensive treatment that may give her several additional years. She tells Washington she can't possibly afford the treatment so she will just accept what fate has dealt her.

Washington decides to "give" her a large sum of "evidence" cash that nobody will miss so she can have the experimental treatment. Apparently, the case is over and nobody will look for the cash for a number of years.

Things go totally wrong for Washington after that as the wife and her husband are killed in a "suspicious" house fire of which a neighbor spotted Washington outside the house just before the fire started. Additionally, just prior to her death the woman was changing her life insurance beneficiary to Washington (giving him motive) and then the DEA all of a sudden demands the evidence money because it can be tied to another case. To top it off, Washington's estranged wife is leading the investigation into the two murders so he has to avoid her getting any sense that he might have been involved. To say any more about the movie would be a big spoiler but the movie is loaded with twists and turns.

I would have rated it higher but some of the things that happened seemed to have me shaking my head. There is Washington's friend who seems to know everything but still helps Washington even though he probably thinks he is guilty.

3 out of 5 stars Pedestrian Latter Day Noir.......2007-02-26

I always like it when Denzel Washington stretches his acting muscles and takes on characters with darker shading (see "Training Day" and "Man on Fire"). And he does account himself pretty good here as the philandering Florida Keys police chief who may or may not be set up. That said, this vehicle is pretty much of a waste of his time and talent. The plot does take an interesting twist at the film's midpoint but a ten year old could predict the ultimate denouement and the ending is a little too pat for my taste. Pretty much the sole reasons to recommend this flick is Washington and a pretty good turn by Eva Mendes as Washington's estranged detective wife.

5 out of 5 stars I love the opening scene.......2007-02-04

Hey, Denzel, there's an intruder in MY house. Can you come round immediately.

5 out of 5 stars The Action-Thriller At Its Best.......2007-02-04

"Out Of Time" combines character, fast action, tight drama, skillfully placed moments of humor, and electrifying thrills into an extremely potent package, one that reaches the full potential that many other, better-known, movies in its general vein have only partially captured. Denzel Washington stars as the sheriff of a small and idyllic Florida town who's faced with an ethical dilemna when his love is diagnosed with a fatal disease that's potentially curable, but only at an extremely high cost that her insurance won't cover. The sheriff can get his hands on the money needed easily enough - it's in the form of the ill-gotten gains of Florida drug dealers, sitting indefinately in the evidence safe at the local police station. He works out a plan he can live with that would provide the needed treatment without trampling on his integrity and principles more than would be bearable, but what seems workable gets a lot more complicated when some very unexpected events begin occuring. Scams and cons, ethical shades of grey, double-crosses and plot twist after plot twist crank up the suspense and action to uncanny levels, and ample doses of comedic content that could have been sorely out of place manage to fit in perfectly and just make the whole show better and more fun. Spearheaded by Washington, the whole cast turns in excellent performances and complete the job of taking this stunner into the upper reaches of moviedom. A great ride from start to finish, and a definate must-see for thriller and action fans.

2 out of 5 stars How can a police chief be this stupid?.......2006-10-03

I bought this dvd thinking it would be an enjoyable thriller. Instead my husband and I found ourselves repeatedly saying "how could he go and do that, that was so stupid". To be honest, seeing that he had been fooled was immediate and obvious. Rather than sharing the truth with his friend and his wife, he goes and does one stupid/criminal/incriminating thing after another. The fact that Denzel Washington gets out of this situation in tact is solely because of either a) luck or b) a friend covering up for him. eg..Good grief, how many police officers don't know their chief's cell phone number in a small town. When the old woman pointed him out he was wearing the same outfit as he was when he was prowling around the night before. It gets a heck of a lot worse. The only reason I give it two stars rather than one is pity because I generally like Denzel Washington as an actor.

I'm a Don Knotts fan. If I'm tired and irritable all I have to do is put on a Don Knotts movie and watch it. He always puts me in a good mood. The same goes for Andy Griffith. I love those two actors. In my opinion you can't go wrong buying a Don Knotts movie or an Andy Grittith movie. I love anything with Don Knotts or Andy Grittith.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh Gently, But Laugh Loudly!.......2007-01-04

Don Knotts was one of the most underated comics of his time. Just the way he'd want it. He'd just shimmy in place, stammer, and drop the microphone if he tried to accept any accolades anyway. This particular film sums up his homespun humor and at the same time gave him a bit of a backbone to play for the only time in his career (and whenever I think of the quintessential example of his persona i keep going back to the cameo appearance he makes in 'It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World' with Phil Silvers...if ever there were two polar opposites in screen presence it had to be the glib, con artistry of Phil Silvers up against the country
bumpkin of Don Knotts...but that's another movie). As I was saying Don gets to exhibit all of his comedic timing and a new aspect of his character to great advantage. Knotts made gentle comedies that spring out of his everyman cowardice and this is no exception. If you like his work you'll love this movie...if you never got his schtick...you won't.

1 out of 5 stars Not funny at all.......2006-03-11

I'm as much of a Don Knotts fan as anyone on the planet. But my high expectations were brought low as my family and I suffered through this stink bomb. It is simply dreadful. There is not a funny moment in this movie. Compared to this movie, "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" gets ten stars.

The 2004 version of Around the World in 80 Days is an entertaining hodge-podge of adventure, comedy, and scenery from across the globe. Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan, 24 Hour Party People), an obsessively precise inventor, bets that he can circumnavigate the planet in 80 days--considered impossible in the Victorian era. In this version, Jackie Chan plays a Chinese peasant who retrieves a stolen idol from the Bank of England, then convinces Fogg to hire him as a French valet so that Chan can get back to his village. Chan supplies numerous spectacular fights against the forces trying to stop Fogg or get the idol, while Coogan is both funny and a surprisingly appealing romantic lead (he flirts with a fetching French painter who joins them). The various episodes--featuring cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger, John Cleese, Owen Wilson, and Sammo Hung--are uneven, but a goofy good cheer prevails. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Great Kids Movie.......2007-07-03

My grandkids are Jackie Chan fans, (of course so am I) and I was looking for a good movie they could watch without a lot of bad language and violence. This movie had everything I could ask for, great action, comedy and enough adult fare to keep me interested. The kids and I both loved it!

1 out of 5 stars This movie remake really stinks big time, but..........2007-06-25

This remake of Jules Verne's 'Around the World in 80 Days' (actually, this is the third go-round if you count the Pierce Brosnan-Peter Ustinov TV movie in-between which also had its' problems) is a terrible, boring movie. Despite all of the familiar faces that show up with Jackie Chan and the other leads (Arnold must've been paid a lot of money for a cameo to make a complete fool of himself before becoming California's Governor), this 'comedy' is an absolute B.O.M.B. But I disagree with many reviewers when they suggest watching the 1956 T.U.R.K.E.Y. starring David Niven, Cantanflas and Shirley MacLaine. That '56 Oscar Winner (also filled to capacity with celebrity cameos) is considered by many in the film industry as one of the worst choices for Best Picture. If you have it on DVD or VHS, try watching it. It is so bland, so humorless, so lacking in adventure, so B.O.R.I.N.G. I guarantee you won't be able to get through it. Hey, the music is nice, and Cantinflas is allowed to show off some of his talents, but Niven is stiff and dull, the plot (a bet, I know) is paper thin, and there are absolutely no interesting characters (even Robert Newton, who is hired to spy on Niven, is underused). The 1956 version, in other words, is overhyped and totally blah, with three exclamation points!!! If you really want to watch some exciting Jules Verne action, watch Disney's '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' (1954) or 'Mysterious Island' (1960). I mean, some books just aren't meant to be translated into film. Maybe 'Around the World in 80 Days' is one of those books.

4 out of 5 stars Jackie Chan Strikes Again!!!.......2007-05-23

Of course, if you love Jackie Chan, just about any movies he's made is a MUST! This one has everything! He's funny, the action is speedy and all-over-the-place. There are also some tender character moments. Steve Coogan as Mr. Fogg is dashing and dares to be a little silly. Ewen Bremner is a cute addition to the mix as the free-spirited artist-lady, and handles herself well with screen-stealers Jackie and Steve.

Please check this one out the first chance you get!

4 out of 5 stars Disney + Chan = funny.......2007-05-07

I wasn't too sure what I'd find when I popped this one in my DVD player. It didn't take long for me to be laughing and, I'll admit, even gigglesnorting at the comedic moments. The laughs come pretty steadily with this movie. Mixed in with the situational comedy and prop gags that Jackie Chan is well known for, there's a entertaining storyline. Plenty of other well known comedians make appearances. All in all, worth the money spent and it's 95% child safe. ;)

3 out of 5 stars Okay as a Jackie Chan movie; terrible as a Verne story.......2007-03-11

If you attempt to watch this movie thinking about Jules Verne's book or thinking about the epic 1956 movie, you will be sorely disappointed. Some of the concepts of the original book and movie remain, but in general the only two concepts that survived from the book and the 1956 movie are the bet to travel around the world in a maximum of 80 days and the cameos of (famous?) people sprinkled throughout the movie.

Jackie Chan steals a jade Buddha from the Bank of England that thieves had originally stolen from his village in China. During his escape from the police Chan encounters Phileas Fogg, a rather eccentric inventor who is in immediate need of a French valet. Chan, whose real name is Lau Xing, quickly makes up a French-sounding name, Passepartout. The first encounter with Fogg is somewhat humorous as Chan rides a roller coaster until the track breaks and Chan goes flying about London.

Fogg has been trying to gain acceptance at the Royal Academy of Science, where Lord Kelvin insists that there is nothing major remaining to be invented. In fact, the real Lord Kelvin did make a similar statement regarding discoveries in physics. Other historical figures alluded to the lack of new inventions (how wrong THEY were!). Fogg bets Lord Kelvin his position as the head of the Royal Academy of Science in exchange for Fogg halting all inventive activities that Fogg can journey around the world in 80 days. Lau Xing helped to goad Fogg into the bet, hoping to use the journey to return the Buddha to his village.

Off Fogg, "Passepartout" and soon artist Monique La Roche (Cécile De France) go. As they travel they meet various people who appear to be mostly interested in stopping their journey. Some of the actors portraying these people are well-known, with the best known being Arnold Schwarzenegger. Former Chan co-star Owen Wilson ("Shanghai Noon") appears as Wilbur Wright. Other relatively well-known stars include Kathy Bates, Macy Gray, Sammo Hung, and John Cleese.

The most original part of the encounters is the martial arts scenes. The fight with the Ten Tigers in Lau Xing's village is nicely choreographed. Another fight scene in New York involving a yet to be assembled Statue of Liberty (which is very good even though the Statue of Liberty was assembled well before the Wright brothers started their bicycle business) contains numerous excellent scenes.

As with any movie involving Jackie Chan the stunts are excellent. The balloon launch contains an extended stunt sequence involving a mooring rope that must have been very dangerous to accomplish. The rope scenes also yield some humor as Chan climbs up the side of a building and jumps off the rope to regain Fogg's bag. There are other stunt sequences sprinkled throughout the film. Some of the sequences are reprises of Chan stunts from other movies, many are new. Many are ludicrous. Nearly all are enjoyable to watch.

This movie is fun to watch if you are a Jackie Chan fan. However, this movie is very tongue-in-cheek and has little to do with the original premise of the Jules Verne book. The movie has lost the epic feel of the 1956 movie, and the movie has given up any pretense of explaining how someone might have traveled around the world in 80 days in the late 1800's. If you are going to watch this movie thinking you are going to see another attempt to make a movie faithful to the Jules Verne book or at least similar to the epic 1956 version, you will be very disappointed. If you want to see a Jackie Chan comedy very loosely inspired by Jules Verne's book "Around the World in 80 Days," then you have come to the right place.

Good Luck!

Amazon.com

After turning down the role of Dirty Harry, John Wayne made up for lost time by starring in this pretty-good 1974 police drama. Shot on location in a gritty pre-Microsoft Seattle, McQ finds John Wayne butting heads with fellow cops and local crime elements as he investigates the murder of a fellow cop and friend. Wayne is obviously a bit long-in-tooth to be taking on this kind of role, but the script allows for some decent character development, including Colleen Dewhurst in a brief but memorable role as a washed-up barmaid, and the action sequences by veteran director John Sturges still hold up well. For anyone who cares, a key drug-heist sequence was shot in the hospital that now houses Amazon.com's Seattle headquarters. --Kristian St. Clair

Description

Police lieutenant resigns from the force to track down some big dope dealers involved in killing a couple of police officers. John Wayne is a force to be reckoned with when he stars as a cop who quits the force to seek revenge for his murdered partner in this high action, suspenseful drama.

3 out of 5 stars McQ is at it again.......2007-06-13

McQ is not going to let Eddie Albert tell him what to do. McQ is going to find out what is going on and he is going to get all of them. That also includes Diana Muldaur, and Colleen Dewhurst. McQ should also get John Sturges for those extended scenes where they drag it out to get their 111 minute run time.

5 out of 5 stars 1 Year before I was in Seattle.......2006-10-07

1974 McQ was shot in Seattle...mabe late 1973....but I just had to see all the locations where it was shot locally after the movie came out. I forced my parents to find that exellent freeway street run-off scene, and I have a picture from 30 years ago standing at the very scene location.

I really only liked it for it's music originally before I discovered it was filmed in my new town. I became even a bigger fan of the movie after I got my drivers license...drining along the docs looking for a visual scene from the movie. But my best scene was the beach scene where the run along the beach at high speeds.

Damn if 5 years later I re-created my own high spped chase at 70 miles an hour up the same beach!! It was so cool!! But '65 Impalas not equipped for runs in the sea are quick to choke....belive me...I had a whole lotta explaining to do! But I'm damn glad I did it.

Maybe next time someone could help me film it?...lol.

I'm an amature videographer now. But at least i have film now!!.

It's an excellent movie and John Wayne cannot compare to Bullitt McQueen, or any other film at that time. John Wayne is John Wayne, no one will ever fit his shoes again. Oh, you can compare the styles of movies at the time...sure. They were all alike. Revengefull cops forced out of the police department seeking vendgance.

But theirs only one John Wayne and one Clint Eastwood battleing for good vengenge cops during this time frame.

Each have exculded very excellent performances (from excellent directors).

But I go for McQ more for the soundtrack quality and editing for storyline. I absolutly think that if I only had to see any movie once in my lifetime...it would be McQ. It's not vengence so much as it is about justice.

I'm in favor of getting the bad guy. Columbo comes in a close 2nd. Oh...and Yes...CSI LV is my best current TV show.

5 out of 5 stars Really fun to watch John Wayne plays 'Dirty Harry'!.......2006-08-02

I recently watched the reruns of two action movies, McQ & Brannigan, both starring John Wayne, on cable TV. I had watched both of them in the theatres during the mid 70's or so.

As a young boy, I have always enjoyed watching John Wayne in so many westerns (Stage-coach, Rio Bravo, True Grit...) & in so many war movies (Green Berets, Sands of Iwo Jima, The Longest Day...).

I believe that John Wayne was almost in his late 60's/early 70's when he starred in the above two movies. I also believe that these were the only two movies in which he had played a street-wise no-nonsense cop. That's 'Dirty Harry' style!

In the first movie, McQ, he was Police Detective-Lieutenant Lon McQ in Seattle. He investigated the death of his partner & along the way uncovered some corrupt elements in his police department with shady connections to the mob. The signature mobster in the movie, Manny Santiago, was played by Al Lettieri.

In the second movie, Brannigan, he was Police Detective-Lieutenant Jim Brannigan in Chicago. He was sent to London to bring back an American mobster on the run, Ben Larkin, (played by John Vernon) & along the way he got entangled with the conservative work-style of Scotland Yard.

Despite his age, John Wayne was really remarkable in both roles. Having seen him in so many westerns & war movies, it was refreshing to see him acting in contemporary settings. The hot-pursuit action sequences (car chases & shoot-outs) were really good, considering that era. In McQ, the car chase along the beach, with sea gulls fluttering away for cover, was magnificantly choreographed. In Brannigan, the car chase segment ending at the Tower Bridge was great, too. There was even a large-scale brawl at a London pub...reminiscent of John Wayne's innumerable westerns. The storyline in both movies was quite intriguing. In McQ, he even got to show off his physical prowess with an unlicensed sub-machine gun. That was cool! The dialogue in both movies was witty, too.

In Brannigan, one could see how big & tall John Wayne was, when he was in London among the crowd. He really stood out like a sore thumb. His opposite was Commander Sir Charles Swann of Scotland Yard, played by a very fine British actor, Richard Attenborough. John Wayne even got a beautiful side-kick in the movie, Detective Sergeant Jennifer Thatcher, played by Judy Geeson.

In McQ, I was very surprised to see John Wayne in a relatively intimate scene involving a junkie informer played by a fine actress (Colleen Dewhurst) in an understated role. This was something which had never happened in any of his other movies, as far as I know!

On the whole, both movies had a good mix of action, drama & comedy, coupled with witty dialogue throughout. I have enjoyed very much watching both of them again after so many years.

4 out of 5 stars Look for Tom Valentine's old buddy Eddie Albert and future Magnum, p.i. star Roger E. Mosely in here, too.......2006-05-10

John Wayne was so busy pumping out
Westerns with his crew/family in
'71 that he had to turn Dirty Harry,
which ended up being done superbly
by a (then) novice named Clinton
Eastwood, Jr. (age 30). By '74, w/
Westerns going the way of the Buffalo,
Wayne was talked into this fine film
role by a very underrated Director
named John Sturgis. Moves a bit slow-
er than we would like, and 'The Duke'
was a bit slow by then as well. But
this film and his next (see my review
of Branigan) were two of his best made
movies in his remarkable 50 yrs. in
film. Wayne was born in 1907 in Iowa
and his birth house is still there
for visitors to see.

5 out of 5 stars wayne trades in his horse for a trans am and his six shooter for a machine gun in "mcq".......2006-04-28

by 1974 wayne saw that westerns were in their death thros and he though that is dirty harry was a hit he could do a police thriller also.
what we got is "mcQ" and even if wayne is a little slower than he used to be he makes this police thriller work. after his partner is killed and he almost is mcq starts to look for answers. what he finds is police coruption and cops stealing dope and selling it themselves. i like this movie and wayne makes it work even when it shouldn't sometimes

5 out of 5 stars Chop Socky Classic!!!.......2007-03-14

I originally saw this film as a kid waaaay back in the 80's when my local TV station used to have "Midnite Kung Fu Theatre". As a fan of "Old Skool" flix I was happy when I found this DVD in my local music stores used bin for 5 bucks!!! The print quality is good and is obviously not the cut, full screen TV print. This is proably the best release of this film that you will find, unless some company undertakes a massive film preservation project for this flix. Ignore all the Kung Fu snobs that will complain about slow fight speed or other such B.S. issues and add this to your "old skool" collection.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT OLD SCHOOL FLICK.......2007-02-24

now with all this talent in this movie how can a director, a producer, and choreographer go wrong and they dont but the video asia release has a flaw. the chapter selection feature is all screwed up and the insta action isnt quite accurate ither. but video asia did manage to release to uncut version which is an hour and forty minutes compare to the other past releases who give us an hour and twenty five minutes or so but anyway this flick stars the legendary megakickers john liu and wong jang lee. other talented wonders include yuen biao, lee hoi sang, philip ko fei, corey yuen, tino wong, sonny yuen shun yi, tyrone hsu hsia, wong chi sang, ching kuo chung, and the yuens choreograph the action so it well equipped. this is an adventure action flick so that explains why it is 1 hour 40 minutes long in the original cut. for a movie made in 1977 this has great action this version is definite pick up but bare in mind like i said this is videoasia and it has its flaws and you gotta ask yourself this videoasia release is too good to be true well not exactly just the chapter selection that messed up the flow.

5 out of 5 stars Old "skool" Kung Fu .......2006-05-09

The Kung fu kid is right,,,,there seems to be a mild delay in the fight scenes,,,but WHO CARES. That did not take nothing away from this kick-ass flick,,,I said it before and I'll say it again,,,three words: TOUGH, TOUGH, TOUGH. This flick has to be up there on all of your top 10 best, and don't lie. If this one is not in the collection,,,you're not a true old school nut,,,PERIOD!!! The story nontheless very mundane, but the fight scene is off the hizzel!! If you agree with me on this one,,,I recommend "Mystery Of Chess Boxing" The best ever!!

4 out of 5 stars 5 bucks in the ne and used section, I decided to replace the vid tape and upgrade.......2006-05-06

And man am I glad I got this. This is THE version to get. I mean you have like 2 reviews down there that say the fights are slowed down, and you have another one who says that the release is awesome. So I have come here to set the record srtaight. THE RELEASE IS AWESOME, for videoasia at least. It is widesceened(not all the way of course)and great picture(for videoasia. The colors are nice and rich, they tend to bleed sometimes, and sometimes at the start of the movie, there does seem to be a but of distortion, chioppiness, and shakiness. But like I said, this is a videoasia release and their release of south shaolin master has to take a backseat to this, I had one hell of a good time watching this. And this is how fast Hwang Lee fights people, sorry if it isn't up to today's jet li standards, but the undercranking just isn't used that much, they tried to give you a little more of a real life feeling, sorry, go check out iron monkey 2 or something. I have had many problems with videoasia releases in the past, but after accumulating a total fo 7 dvd palyers, i always get ALL my dvd;s to work, all the time, except that dam doctor wai movie.
It is very possibel if you try it on another palyer, it will run at a normal speed.

Now this movie has many stars and i will try to name most of them, cause by the way this is the uncut version like other people said and you WILL see yuen biao's fight.

So the story is abotu the 3 invincible armour masters I think and john liu(secret rivals, fighting ace) gets framed for murder by Lee Hsoui?? You will recognize this guy as the monk who sort of opposes san te in 36th chamber, he also fought him in shaolin vs. wudang. He is also the guy who is opposite Gung on-hark as whang in-sik's other henchmen in young master, and shaolin traitor who gets killed by ti lung in avenging eagle. He has a really good acting performance in this and they actually fooled me into believing he was a good guy at the start of this. But of course he is not so Hwang lee seng sends Chiang Wang to get John. Adn I gotta say this guy wang di an AWESOME job in this movie. I sually dont; like him. He is in THE greatest chopsticks fight scene eevr from hitman in the hand of buddha, he is the guy who replaced don wong in secret rivals 2, and is teh one who beats up jackie's schol's master in snake in eagle's shadow, and he also gets beat up by jackie in drunken master. His hair is obviously so fake in this but he plasy his character SOOOOOOOO cool. He doesn't smile once, and his fighting is the same stupid style, but I have to sat that i loved him playing this role. So I haev to say that this is not your average Ng-See Yuen release. many people don't know it, but he actually directed many god movies like secret rivals and also this one. You can tell right away that they actually put some money into this flick. All the great sets and, costumes and SWEET wigs are definitely highly unusual for yuen. So the story isn't the shizzle by any means but nam me another white-haired mutant fight than this movie. I'm waiting... When phillip ko and his crane go up against Hwang's eagle, you will definitely have a smile on your face. Best white whair vs. white hair OF ALL TIME.

So the movie starts out a little slow, but at the 1 hour mark, don't plan on moving your eyes for abotu 40 minutes.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent kung fu adventure. .......2005-10-18

The eagle claw combined with the invincible amour is definitely unbeatable this one of Jonh Lui better movies and with a cast with the likes of silver fox this is an entertaining martial art conspiracy, lots of action great technique, lets be real chinese movies is not noted for original creative story lines and great realistic acting skills forget that!!!! if you want a good action pack martial arts movie this will definitely satistfy your taste, one of the best eagle claw techniques diplayed on screen a must to any collector laterz folks.

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie.......2007-03-23

I really enjoy this movie I have watched a little more than a few times. I love Alex Carter in this it shows a funny side to him that you didn't get to see in some of his other films.

4 out of 5 stars Great adaptation of a Harlequin romance novel.......2007-02-22

Carly Westin (Kim Huffman) is a self-employed caterer out to make a name for herself. When she agrees to a Cyrano-situation where she cooks a meal for a friend to impress her new lover, she never suspects that she will be a witness to her murder. Identifying Chester Winnifield (Corbin Bernson), who is better known as "Professor Passion" makes her a target from both his fans and Winnifield. When she starts to receive strange notes and attempts are made on her life, sexy detective Jack Brannigan (Alex Carter) moves in to watch over her, and the sparks begin to fly, much to neighbor Elliott's strife.

Based on Kristen Gabriel's "Bullets over Boise," the film retains the novel's chemistry thanks to great casting and the humor of the leads (particularly Jack's bumbling antics when he helps Carly on her catering assignments). It's definitely one of the better Harlequin novel-to-film adaptations. In fact, it was better than most of the romantic comedies to make it to the theater lately.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE.......2007-02-02

When I found out that Harlequin Romance novels were made into movies I was a bit unsure if I should watch them. I always pictured the male heroine in the stories to be gorgeous...and figured that a made-for-tv movie might cast some well, not-so-hot- leading characters.

This is not the case with this movie!!

Alex Carter makes a great leading man. I thought his acting was great and he really played the tough cop well. I didn't even realize that he was going to be Carly's love interest (but then I saw he was the only hot guy in the movie so...duh). He really is the perfect leading man. He has these gorgeous blue-green eyes and fabulous Greek good looks. Mmmm. And even though I was annoyed with the late 90's fashion (neither "Carly" nor "Jack" can dress to save their life) he was still totally hot under all those horrible button up shirts. And no, I'm not being pretentious b/c harlequin heroines always dress well in the stories (unless of course they're ranchers--so they're excused).

Anyway, I won't get into the plot...but I loved it. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

4 out of 5 stars Harlequin movie.......2007-01-26

Made from a Harl novel. I thought it was done well. Police procedure isn't really followed, but it's about the romance and that's why I bought the movie. The lead characters are very likeable and have great chemistry. Alex Carter recurred on CSI (the original) as a cop for a while.

5 out of 5 stars Recipe for Revenge.......2005-09-27

I don't know if it was because I was very anxious to watch the movie, but it seem to take longer than usual for the movies I purchase with Amazon. However the wait was worth it and I've enjoyed it very much.

During the first three episodes Tohru Honda visits a friendly , yet sightly perverted, Ayame Sohma and his womens cothing store, meets the enveyous Hiro Sohma and understands why he lashes out at Tohru's friendship with Kisa Sohma, and then meets the EXTREEMLY insane yet kind and thoughtful Ristu Sohma.
That is not as convinsingly moving as my review title eh?
Well you didnt let me go on to the last three episodes.
Tohru Honda is an optimistic warm hearted young girl who lives with a new family since the untimely death of her mother. One of the three young men she lives with, Kyo Sohma , is one of the many Sohmas cursed with an evil animal spirit. Kyo, however lives with the worst of all of the curses. When the beaded bracelet he wares comes off his wrist , his true cursed form comes forth; a freakishly hiddious beast. Kyo's martial arts master involves the removal of Kyo's braclet one day...This isnt the worst of it, it happens before Tohru and she is given the greatest burden she edured since the realization of her mothers death, faceing and accepting the grotesque beast that is the zodiac Sohma curse. What is worse, Akito Shoma stops hideing HIS evil side and attempts to crush Tohru's soul with what is the darkest cloud of hate he can put in to her. At the same time Akito virtually begs her to calm Kyo's relentless spirit. Ok, I idmit that I am not the best at discribing a tear jerking sequence but hear me out, the last three episodes will with out a doubt, make you flood your shirt with tears.

Although they followed the story line pretty good, they totally messed it up in the end, with Kyo, Tohru, Yuki, and Kazuma. In the manga it was totally different, and Shigure barely had anything to do with it. Akito wasn't there, either. Although I know that they had to end it somehow and that they couldn't just wait for the series to be done (although if they wanted to make it good then they should have done just that), they could have made it a little more like the book. I'm not talking about just this volume, but the whole series. The anime was great and i liked it a lot, but it didn't do the manga justice.

5 out of 5 stars KICK ASS ANIME!!!.......2006-03-19

This is for sure my favorite out of the four Fruits Basket DVD's I've seen. I confedently give this DVD a 5+ rating. KICK ASS ANIME!!!

    5 out of 5 stars It's reall great!.......2006-02-14

Fruits Basket is a great series!
There are many fans out there who do not like the ending of it so much (which is on this DVD).
However, I think that is because they don't understand it as much as they should.
Not everything in this show can be interperated through normal words. If you watch it more than once, and try to think deep into it, it really makes sense!
The english dub isn't bad at all!
(of course, I do suggest the japanese with english sub.)

5 out of 5 stars Curses... The final Chapter........2005-10-06

The last disc of the first season of Fruits Basket starts off with a visit to Ayami's shop by Yuki and Tohru. Little does Yuki know that when Ayami says he sells "Male romantic Fantasies" what he means is that he sells ladies lingerie he designs and hand makes himself. This throws Yuki off, but he decides to try to continue bonding with his older brother anyways, and while he's at it he gets the added bonus of seeing Tohru sample some of Ayami's handiwork.

Another member of the zodiac crosses paths with Tohru; this time it's Hiro Sohma, born the year of the ram. Hiro is roughly Kisa Sohma's age, and it is because of Kisa that he decides to approach Tohru, a woman he finds obnoxious. But he must do it, especially if it is for Kisa. After that yet another member shows up, this time it's Ritsu Sohma, the monkey, a man who is not what he seems at first glance, and has severe anxiety problems.

The height of this disc comes in the last three episodes, all more or less a continuation of each other up into the climax of the series. When Kyo's master shows up the house goes into an uproar. Apparently along with training Kyo, Kagura, and Yuki, Master Kazuma acted as a surrogate father to Kyo, raising him in his own home since he was a young child after the unfortunate death of his Mother. At first Kyo is reluctant to show his happiness at Kazuma's arrival in front of Yuki, but he is nothing short of ecstatic to have his former master about, and he begs him to remove him from that house. Kazuma decides to push Kyo further and forcibly convinces him to reveal his true self to Tohru. This requires that Kyo remove his beaded bracelet, then his original self emerges in all of it's horrifying glory...What will Tohru say when she sees him like this? How will she react? Will he lose her if she sees him as he truly is?

I can't give everything away, nor would I want to. The climax to this series is so moving, I was crying by the end of this three part episode. There were parts that were altered from the manga...or at the very least switched about, I have not read the last four volumes of the manga yet so it is hard for me to say how accurate it is, but there are many tender moments that have been added to create more character depth and dynamics in the plot. Yuki and Kyo have a bonding moment in the end of the "Revelation of Kyo's true self" episode, and it's almost obvious where the two of them stand with Tohru as far as romantic love goes. Even Shigure, who is normally there for comic relief, has a few serious moments that turn out to be nothing short of heartwarming. Arisa and Hana show up as well, to show just how much they care about Tohru. Even Akito turns up in the ending of the series, and there are some nail biting screen moments between him and Tohru, but they are resolved well enough to lead into a second season....if there will ever be one.

I guess that could be my only real complaint about the way this series turned out... that the rest of it has not been animated yet. Personally, I can't wait to see where the members of the zodiac go from here. Everything was left at such a cliff hanger as far as character development goes that it would be an utter shame if the studio that produced it failed to get another season off the ground. Do I have any predictions for the future? Of course I do, but mine come from the knowledge I have gleaned from reading further into the manga series than has been animated up until this point, so I am going to keep those thoughts to myself, for the moment. All I can say is...wow... I hope more gets made soon... I'm going to go into withdrawal until it does.

1 out of 5 stars What a rediculous pile of poo........2006-06-02

You're kidding, right? The only good film in the trilogy is the origonal. How dare you try to continue the story of something that cannot be continued. The orgional was good enough. Leave it there. Just because you want money, don't ruin such wonderfull entertainment.

I didn't even stay awake through all of the movie, it was so bad! I'd rather watch Barney with my 2-year-old!

    3 out of 5 stars Further Explored.......2006-02-03

This third sequel in the terrifyng Candyam series is a further decline, as you can feel more sympathy for the character as it does explain all along- a mob lynched and hazed him, pasting honey on his body and bringing a swarm of bees to eat him alive. It was about inter racial marriage, which again was almost unbearable to watch, and what was even more scary was that this happens in real life. A true old fashioned ghetto which again is the closest thing to a hell on earth.

1 out of 5 stars Candyman 3: The Day of the Dead (1999).......2005-12-31

    Director: Turi Meyer
Cast: Tony Todd, Donna D'Errico, Alexia Robinson, Jsu Garcia, Mark Adair-Rios, Lupe Ontiveros, Elizabeth Guber, Rena Riffel, Ernie Hudson Jr.
    Running Time: 93 minutes
Rated R for bloody violence and gore, sexuality and language.

The third in the series derived from a concept by Clive Barker, "Day of the Dead" (they can't even come up with their own subtitle) staggers down the well-trodden path already navigated by the "Halloween" and "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies: that is, taking a decent concept and flushing it down the toilet. The original movie was a near horror masterpiece and relied on atmosphere rather than gore, while the first sequel was bearable if completely routine. This one is just a load of rubbish. Donna D'Errico, from Baywatch (what a spectacle of credibility), stars as Caroline McKeever, the great great granddaughter of the feared Candyman (Tony Todd once again), once a normal man but now an apparition who appears to slaughter everyone around you if you dare to say his name five times in front of a mirror. Caroline says his name five times in front of a mirror and up he pops to murder her nearest and dearest. As the Candyman hacks his way through various bad actors, Caroline teams up with new pal David (Nick Corri) to find a collection of paintings knocked up by the Candyman while he was still alive, which may hold the key to stopping him.

There's not a single thing here that isn't scavenged from the first "Candyman" film and every other ropy horror movie produced since caveman days. The screenplay is so lazy it can't even be bothered to connect half the characters to the plot, the photography is bright and glossy, which is at odds with what's supposed to be a dark story, while nothing in the direction adds any atmosphere at all. Anyone could have directed this movie, so little effort has been put in to make it scary, while the ending is an outrageous cop out. No thought has gone in to developing themes or structuring the plot because no one here is talented enough to give this movie any depth beyond having D'Errico running around in a variety of tight vests. The rest of the performances are poor too, although none are quite as bad as D'Errico's pathetic attempts at screaming and breathing erratically. Surely more can be done with characters like the Candyman than the constant repetition of scenes where he appears to stick his hook through someone's stomach. The fact that the makers of this movie think Candyman is so terrifying that the very sight of him just standing there will strike fear into our hearts is a sign that they just can't be bothered even to try something a bit different. Clive Barker may not be the master of horror as every at first claimed him to be, but he's right about one thing: the sequels to his movies are garbage.

    2 out of 5 stars Horrendous.......2005-09-26

Clive Barker did a good job on the original Candyman. It was truly a cut above most horror movies. The second movie was medicore at best in my opinion but this one was just horrendous. There is no suspense at all in this movie and the acting is deplorable. Donna D'Errico is soft on the eyes but too bad she talks. Lets hope this is the last sequel.

1 out of 5 stars 0 STARS: THAT WAS SO LAME! LMFAO THAT WAS SO LAME!!.......2005-08-21

I will not give "Candyman 3: Day of the Dead" a serious analysis because it is so stupid and to be frank, is not even worthy of a review other than to say that this TRASH sucks just like the rest of the series, but also, this movie goes above beyond being horrible and is the epitome of the word "lame". THIS MOVIE "F"ing SUCKS!!! Please pardon me for my language, but after watching this movie, I am sure you can understand my distress after wasting my time on this complete and utter rubbish.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Thriller.......2007-05-25

I just saw The Clearing for the second time and, I'm glad to say, it works as well as the first time. The plot keeps you intrigued and the characters are compelling, even the laid-off employee who turns to crime. Helen Mirren, Robert Redford and Willem Dafoe, but then again, that's not a surprise.

    4 out of 5 stars Kidnapped...A Study .......2007-05-21

This review refers to "The Clearing"...VHS

Whenever I see Robert Redford's name attached to any film, I'm usually assured of something at least very good. Add the names Helen Mirren and Willem DaFoe and my expectations rise even higher. All these greats don't necessarily make a "great" film. Although I would consider this film a good and somber character study of a family in fear, it's probably not one I would way say would stand up to repeated viewings. While debating on whether to go 3 or 4 stars, I decided on 4 because one thing it did, even though a bit sluggish at times, was keep my attention throughout the length of the film. And for me that's a big plus.

Robert Redford, a very successful businessman is kidnapped at gunpoint by Willem DaFoe who is your ordinary working stiff that just can't seem to get ahead in the world. It seems an elaborate and well thought out scheme, that appears to be organized by a sophisticated group of business rivals. DaFoe being the "middleman" will get his due. The film switches back and forth between the woods where Dafoe is calling the shots on Redford and the scene at the family home where the FBI has taken over the case. It is interesting to watch the two different reactions going on. that of the victim and that of the family. Mirren, the wife, tries her best to carry on with everyday life, swimming and shopping. But she does a very good job of portraying the toll it is taken on her. Sometimes everyone, including Redford seemed to me a little too calm and collected about the situation, although there is one outburst from the grown son, that did seem more like reality.

It's more of a psychological drama then an action packed one, and I think even the title, 'The Clearing" can be taken a couple of ways. One of course, the clearing in the woods where our guy is being held and the word play and relationship between kidnapper and victim is the focus. The other could be that, while her husband of 30 years fights for his life, Mirren has some issues of her own that she needs to clear her soul of as well.

There were still things in my mind though that were not clear in the end. Mostly the why's of what was happening. I'd call this a good rental for fans of Redford, DaFoe or Mirren. But not what I would call a keeper....Laurie

2 out of 5 stars Underwhelming and pointless.......2007-02-14

I assumed this was one of those mistakes, and I was going to rediscover some sort of gem, when I heard that this Robert redford film had gone straight to DVD. Alas, how wrong I was.
It's true, the performances are terrific, from Redford, from Willem Dafoe and especially from Helen Mirren - however, they are let down by a story that goes nowhere, and goes nowhere with no sense of style.
The plot has two strands - on one hand, we follow Robert Redford the rich businessman who is married and only now finally finding time for his kids, as he is kidnapped by Dafoe, with no apparent motive. As Dafoe marches his captive to the eponymous clearing, they talk, and we learn more about both their lives as a result.
Meanwhile, the FBI have moved in with his wife and kids, and as they investigate, we see the same family skeletons revealed from this other perspective. Displaying this flawed marriage of modern America seems to be the whole point of the movie, as the kidnapping is never truly explained, and the resolution is an empty one.
To make matters worse, the director intercuts the two stories, even though they happen in completely different timeframes. This does not help the story at all, other than to give a clue how it is all going to end.
What a shame to see such terrific performers in such an underwhelming and seemingly pointless movie. If you want to see Redford and Mirren then by all means get the movie, but dont expect any kind of hidden classic.

    4 out of 5 stars Shoulda...Coulda been a "great film" !!!.......2007-01-30

I won't go into the details of this plot...it's there in the description...this could have been a "great film"...it has the actors...how can a film go wrong with this lineup...I blame it all on the film editor...if you watch the deleted scenes that are included in the extra's so little that could have been left in would have mattered greatly...Redford and Mirren should have been childless because the children's roles are extremely limited due to the cutting floor...we don't get to know them at all...why does Hollywood think our attention span can't run the gamut of a full featured film...I just watched The Departed which ran for well over two hours and the time just flew by...come on guys...give the consumer a break....this coulda...shoulda been a "great film".

    4 out of 5 stars Amateurish suspense.......2006-12-06

Nothing to brag about. The action and rhythm are slow. An older man is kidnapped for a ransom, but we know from the very start we have one man alone, that the older man is going to be killed before even getting the money, in other words that we are dealing with an amateur who will manage to get arrested within a week or two. The interest of the film, if there is any, is in the slow moving exploration of the reactions and hardly ever powerful enough attempts at breaking the tie that this kidnapping is. The older man will even stop short of strangling his kidnapper who was under his complete control. Even a survivor who does not survive because he did not go to the end of his surviving killing. Absurd. No beginning, no middle and no end. A film without a form and a clearing without a forest around it.
