"I foresee a glittering future for your daughter," the conspiratorial Duke of Northumberland insidiously whispers to the mother of Lady Jane Grey, the woman who would be England's queen, albeit for only nine days. The same could be said for Helena Bonham Carter, who, in her screen debut, carries this historical drama with aplomb. Jane, a principled and precocious 15-year-old (she reads Plato in Greek) was a pawn in a plot to maintain Protestant rule in the wake of young King Edward's death. A dashing Cary Elwes, anticipating his swashbuckling role in The Princess Bride, costars as Northumberland's feckless, wastrel son, Guilford, whose arranged marriage to Jane unexpectedly blossoms into love and rebellion. Anglophiles will bask in this impeccably mounted production (featuring Patrick Stewart as Jane's bullying father), but swooning teens, too, may embrace these young lovers as did the youths who made Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 Romeo & Juliet a box-office smash in its day. --Donald Liebenson

3 out of 5 stars Remix, please...........2007-05-27

The story was compelling - yes, I know it is not completely accurate, but please.....But the sound mix was horrible. The dialog was very soft, the music VERY LOUD. Watch, enjoy, but keep the volume control close by.

3 out of 5 stars A good movie,yet take it lightly........2007-05-02

The good things; the acting was well enough, the script was beautiful, the costumes were brilliant, and the editing was good. The personalities of Frances Grey and Mary Tudor rang true, Jane's studiousness was relatively well captured and the execution scene was practically exact.

BAD things; Jane Grey was young young young when she was put on the throne, just barely fifteen. Her marraige to Guiliford was virtually loveless, and were the sappy love story excluded people could have realized the true tradgedy this was. Her parents were, as the film shows, physically abusive, and her husband was neglectful and stupid. She was married to him as a product of her parent's ambitions to get her on the throne. Jane was painfully shy and probably would not be *quite* the harpy in the bedroom this film shows her to be. She was also very strong for a girl in her time, and refused quite loudly to make her husband King, and yes she did faint when the crown was placed on her head but she did not, would not yell "Guiliford!!!" before doing so. She did have excellent command of her council but was hardly the revolutionary that the movie paints her to be. she was fiercly protestant-and anti-catholic. if she had continued to reign it could be quite possible that an Inquosition similar to Mary's would be acted out in England-perhaps we would be drinking Bloody Jane's instead. And if I'm not mistaken her last words were "Lord into thy hands I commend my spirit" not "Guiliford"

However, I am not going to lie and say I did not intensly enjoy this movie. I loved the storyline, as seperate as it was from reality. If you enjoyed this movie I STRONGLY reccomend Alison Weir's "Innocent Traitor" which follows the story more accurately and is equally enthralling.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-02-14

If you like costume movies this is a good one. Both the leads are great and I thought the way Jane was presented was great.

5 out of 5 stars Lady Jane - DVD.......2007-01-10

This movie is compelling. Idealistic child-adults who want to change the circumstances for the people of England. They had wonderful ideas and thought they had the power to carry out their ideas and make life better for their people. Unfortunately, their parents carried the real power. This film is based on a true story and is well acted. My daughters like it, too.

1 out of 5 stars Lady Jane.......2006-12-22

I was disappointed in this movie. I had hoped to show it to my students, however, decided against it. It is a boring story. I kept waiting for it to get better, but it didn't.

Warm Springs is a riveting, deeply moving film about a lesser-known chapter in the life of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the American president who saw his country through the dark, terrible times of the Great Depression and most of World War II. Before those epochal events, however, Roosevelt spent time in a political wilderness, groomed for high office but struck down by polio at age 39. Warm Springs is the fascinating story of Roosevelt's painful journey from despair back to wisdom and leadership. Kenneth Branagh gives an emotionally raw, courageous performance as FDR, estranged from his wife, Eleanor (a near-luminous Cynthia Nixon), and his political guru (David Paymer) while ambivalently seeking rehabilitation at Warm Springs, a broken-down spa in the backwoods of Georgia. Mired in misery, misanthropy, and drink, Roosevelt is coaxed back to civilized behavior and a glimmer of altruism by the spa's ailing, folksy manager, Tom Loyless (a remarkable Tim Blake Nelson), and the ministrations of a progressive-minded, physical therapist (solid work by Kathy Bates). Word of Roosevelt's improvement in the buoyant, mineral-rich waters of Warm Springs draws other polio victims--some of whom endure terrible discrimination and misery while traveling—to the spa. In time, these hopeful, all-ages paraplegics form a community that inspires a sense of mission in Roosevelt, setting the stage for his return to the political arena. Surehanded, 80-year-old veteran director Joseph Sargent (on a roll following his lovely, 2004 cable movie Something the Lord Made) has made a pitch-perfect and intimate, historical drama one never wants to see end. --Tom Keogh

Description

He was the only president to be elected three times, and is admired for his leadership during some of this nation's most challenging times, most notably, World War II and the Great Depression. Despite these historic accomplishments, many Americans have never known of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's greatest achievement...until now. Starring Kenneth Branagh (Shakespeare) and Cynthia Nixon(Sex and the City) this inspiring true story reveals one man's secret quest for hope during his darkest days, in a place that would serve as a source of strength for him the rest of his life: Warm Springs.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Movie.......2006-11-11

I don't know about the historical accuracy of this movie, but it was very entertaining and well acted, in my opinion (naturally, since I am writing this!). It left me wanting to know more about FDR and I think that in and of itself should recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars FDR is revolving in his grave.......2006-09-23

This was a agonizing viewing experience from first to last. The main problem is the complete miscasting of Kenneth Branagh in the role of FDR. I don't know whose idea it was to cast a British actor in the part, but the results are embarrassingly bad. If you thought Anthony Hopkins was miscast as Richard Nixon, Branagh as Roosevelt beats that hands down.

History lesson for the screenwriters: Franklin Roosevelt was a 19th century patrician gentleman. He was reared as a rich, spoiled only child, educated at Groton and Harvard and had the world by the string. Branagh apparently thinks having an American accent will suffice, but he is physically and emotionally all wrong for the part. Roosevelt was 6'2, Branagh is about 5'8. He possesses none of the real man's ebullience, wit, charm, charisma or the friendliness that oozed from every pour. For some inexplicable reason, Branagh plays FDR as a seedy, unshaven and unfriendly bum. Where are the characteristic head tilts, the jaunty manner, the lilting voice? Branagh plays FDR as if he were Jimmy Cagney!

Yes, FDR went through a prolonged depression in the aftermath of his polio but here's the rub: he never showed this to anyone. He suffered in silence. He didn't display his real emotions, he had been a taught as an upper class gentleman of his era to obscure them. Thus it's ridiculous that this screenplay has him complaining to valets, Louis Howe or Eleanor.

Cynthia Nixon as Eleanor Roosevelt is scarcely any better. Eleanor Roosevelt is probably the easiest woman to imitate of the 20th century, but Nixon hasn't a clue how the real Eleanor looked or sounded. The examination of the torturous, complicated Roosevelt marriage is totally absent. We see one brief flashback of Franklin undressing his mistress Lucy Mercer and then... nothing.

The screenplay is dreary and they achieve the impossible: making the fascinating Roosevelt come out boring and droning. It was enough to make you tear your hair out.

The only saving grace was the presence of the regal Jane Alexander, who played Eleanor magnificently in the TV drama "Eleanor and Franklin" from 1976. This is available on Amazon on DVD and I urge everyone to watch this infinitely superior production. The sets are insane and the homes which serve as Hyde Park and Campobello are anything but. The definitive characterization o FDR comes from the late Ralph Bellamy. Watch him in the TV mini series from the 80's, "Winds of War" and War and Remembrance." Perhaps Mr. Branagh should have watched these and real films of FDR before tackling this job. He's an adequate actor but miscast to a hideous degree in this limping dog of a drama.

4 out of 5 stars Warm Springs.......2006-08-29

If you happen to see this in a DVD store or your TV listings, I recommend watching it. Kenneth Branagh is, of course, an excellent actor. In this film, he portrays Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the years between the onset of polio and his return to politics. I've never heard this part of his bio before, and it's quite interesting.

The plot must be somewhat simplistic, since it compresses much into 100 minutes, but that doesn't make it a bad plot or a bad movie. Knowing what little I do of FDR's later history gives depth and meaning to this formative part of his life.

Again, I recommend this one. Not five-star material, but damn worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening Story.......2006-08-19

If anyone ever had a legitimate reason for giving up on a political career it was Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. WARM SPRINGS is the film that shows how they fought back that urge and conquered their fears to become two of the greatest Americans. The film garners some of the best acting I've witnessed from lead actors and supporting actors as well, but the main highlight of this piece is the story. The story is one that will remain with me for many years to come because it depicts the time in this couple's life that prepared them to lead America through the Great Depression as well as World War II. The world needed men and women of courage and stamina to defeat the likes of Hitler and because of what happened to them here no one had more courage and stamina than Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.

The picture we see of Franklin as the film begins is one of a rich, spoiled, self absorbed man who is in an extra-marital affair. He and Eleanor are on the verge of separating. It's 1920 and his star is on the rise politically. It seems to be fear of committing political suicide that prevents that breakup. Eleanor at first is a shy traditional wife who is afraid of crowds, who resists the opportunity at every turn to help boost her husband's career.

Fate intervenes and Franklin contracts a devastating case of polio, and it seems at first that his political career is over. But, he receives a letter from a man in Warm Springs, Georgia who runs a place where polio victims can swim in the near 90 degree spring water and receive therapy to build up their leg muscles. It's here that Franklin again finds a mission for himself; here that he sees people who were born under much less fortunate circumstances than himself. In spite of being victims of polio or their caretakers, these less fortunate men and women create a community of people who truly care for each other. Franklin learns at Warm Springs to be compassionate. Back in New York, Eleanor supports her husband by keeping his name in the political fray. She becomes an activist and makes speeches and demonstrates for the downtrodden. She learns in his absence to be strong and as a result grows into a truly political asset.

After this experience, this couple not only loved each other, they respected and revered each other as well.

4 out of 5 stars Good acting by Kenneth Branagh and Cynthia Nixon(Sex and the City) as the Roosevelts........2006-08-14

It's about when Franklin Delano Roosevelt came down with polio and how he attempted to recover by using natural hot springs water at a broken down resort in Georgia. The plot didn't try to sugar coat FDR or his wife Eleanor. They were shown to be flawed human beings who trudge through life like the rest of us, learning to cope with problems like most of us do. It made me sad to see the fear and discrimination toward polio victims. One scene was heartbreaking where a young man was in the baggage car, chair tipped over with him in it, and hasn't ate for two days! Thankfully, there are laws protecting the disabled today.

Of course, FDR never walked again but that didn't stop him from becoming one of the greatest presidents of the USA.

1 out of 5 stars pathetic porn.......2006-11-30

A brainless T&A flick that demeans women. See-through plot devoid of motivation.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Romantica.......2006-11-17

The novel on which this movie is based is widely regarded as a classic of Victorian erotica, which mostly seems to be focused on whipping, with other activities as a sideline rather than the main course.

This movie, on the other hand, qualifies as the modern term "romantica" - romantic erotica. Jennifer Inch shines as "Frank." New to the world and shy, we get to watch this young lady as she discovers the joys and sorrows of being a woman and finally arriving at love with a man who cherishes her. Jennifer is charming and beautiful, making every scene she's in a delight.

This is a "couples movie" without a doubt. The ladies will appreciate the growing regard "Frank" and Charles develop for each other, and their menfolk will enjoy the "skinemax." I'm absolutely thrilled this one is finally out on a superb quality transfer to DVD.

Leave it to New Zealand director Jane Campion (The Piano, Angel at My Table) to begin an adaptation of Henry James's great novel (set in the late 1800s) with a group of late-20th-century women from Down Under talking about the importance of a kiss. Like any good film adaptation (and it's a very good one, indeed), this exquisitely framed and mounted Portrait of a Lady is at least as much Campion as it is James. The story of strong-willed, independent-minded Isabel Archer (Nicole Kidman, whose skin here is photographed like delicate porcelain) is a tricky one to dramatize, since it's largely about good intentions going awry, roads not taken, misguided decisions made for good reasons. Headstrong American orphan Isabel rejects the proposal of a decent, sensible English suitor, Lord Warburton (Richard E. Grant), because she wants to find her own destiny and identity first. Instead, she is seduced by Gilbert Osmond (John Malkovich), an effete collector of art (and women) whom one character describes as a "sterile dilettante." How Isabel's life, and the lives of those who love her, are affected by this fateful (but irreversible?) decision is what the bulk of the film is about. Portrait of a Lady is lovely, heartbreaking, and at times terrifying--as only coming face-to-face with the consequences of one's own life-changing decisions can be. Gorgeously photographed in anamorphic widescreen format. --Jim Emerson

2 out of 5 stars The portrait of a BAD screenplay.......2007-05-25

I will start first by saying that," NO...I have not read the Henry James' novel." That said, my job is to review the Jane Campion film and Laura Jones written screenplay.Having seen this film several times over the years since it first was released in the theatres, I have pondered why this film has never really connected with me until today. I do believe that the real problem with this film is the screenplay itself. Laura Jones also adapted Peter Carey's OSCAR AND LUCINDA and the same problem exists in that film as it does in THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY......short scenes, uneven character development and a lack of "glue" that ties it all together to make the viewer have a total sense of identification with the characters and their situations.Jane Campion certainly has a beautiful sense of how a film should look and feel visually, but this screenplay screams for the viewer to run to read the source material to truly understand character motivation.

As in OSCAR AND LUCINDA, I read the book after viewing the film in order to REALLY understand what the film SO lacked. In other Henry James' film adaptations, such as THE BOSTONIANS and THE EUROPEANS, the treatment of James' material was much better (BOSTONIANS being the better of the two IMO). In THE PORTRAIT OF THE LADY, Laura Jones' script simply does not capture and distill the characters and the plot enough to grab a viewer for screen watching alone. The BBC mini series of PORTRAIT from the 1960's has alot more information in it, but it is still rather dull and is centered in the character Ralph Touchett and not Isabel Archer.Standing on it's own, without the book or other screen adaptations, Jane Campion's film is as cold as ice, filmed in dark blues with little light, and very disjointed. For all of it's gorgeous costuming, elegant set design and some moments of brilliant acting, PORTRAIT OF A LADY cannot overcome it's one biggest, glaring fault.....a BAD screenplay. Laura Jones should NOT adapt source material beyond her scope.

3 out of 5 stars What kind of moron can't see through John Malkovich? .......2007-04-29

John Malkovich plays this creep creepily just as he played Valmont in the American movie Dangerous Liasons. Ugh. Unknowing girlchiks, here's a litmus test to help you avoid Isabelle Archer's fate: Do you think this guy will ever help you move that heavy armoire up or down the stairs? NO!!! So kick him to the curb, slam the door in his face, IGNORE him. His type has no innate power, he only has power that you give to him.

Martin Donovan is all voice and Mary Louise Parker is all scary in this movie. But this might be too much voice from Martin Donovan.

Wow. I can't believe that there are people who could ruin their lives like this.

4 out of 5 stars Complex,, thought-provoking.......2006-08-27

The unusualness of this movie intriqued me so much that I have to give it 4 stars!!The prose and oral exchanges of the characters are very stimulating....For someone to watch @ understand this movie they have to be reasonably intelligent. A few times I paused the movie to think about what the characters meant in their converses (especially the scenes involving Malkovich @ Hershey)... I can see why the average person would think this movie is slow and dull, but the great part of this movie are the subtle conversations that take place. (Ex. When Isabel is explaining to Lord Warburton why he shouldn't marry Pansy and the dialogues between Isabel and Ralph). The ending is great as well. Not catering to the average moviegoers' sensibilities, it leaves the viewer wondering what might happen just as the book does. Alas, for this movie to be enjoyed, one needs to have an appreciation for literature. The musical score gets 5 stars!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is why...........2006-04-24

I ADORE period movies! The acting, scenes, story line...character growth is beyond amazing. The scenery is breathtaking. The movie pulls at my soul and heart....

And I love the ending....so much intense possibilty with that one pause and backward glance. Nicole Kidman was superb in this adaption. All the other actors as well were excellent.

This is by far the best adaption of Portrait of a Lady I have yet seen.

3 out of 5 stars Too much emphasis on girl power.......2005-12-31

I have a hard time taking Jame Campion's work seriously, because she has such a chip on her shoulder. She'll find a way to present such a male-centered classic like "Portrait of a Lady" through her own feminist filter. Once again, she tries to show how wicked manipulative men try to bring down a "strong idealistic woman". Really, Jane Campion is better off adapting the works of Sapho. She should leave dead white male authors alone. She and Cher need to get together and organize a self-pitying feminist fest.

3 out of 5 stars A LUSH AND BEAUTIFUL PERIOD PIECE..........2006-07-27

Jane Campion is a brilliant director who can direct a film and convey much with a minimum of language and action. Her film, "The Piano" is a testament to that innate talent. This would lead one to believe that directing an adaptation of a Henry James novel would be a natural segue for her.

While this is a lush and beautiful period piece, the problem with it is that it is somewhat dull. Despite stellar performances by Barbara Hershey and the supporting cast, the main star, Nicole Kidman, is out of her league, though she is a luminous beauty and has some acting ability. The problem is that her performance lacks the presence or depth necessary to transcend the material and make this a truly interesting film. She just is not good enough an actress to be able to carry this type of storyline and engage the viewer in the lead role of wealthy expatriate, Isabel Archer.

Moreover, while John Malkovich gives a wonderful performance as the malevolent Gilbert Osmond, he is decidedly miscast as he is simply not charismatic enough to make it believable that the rich and beautiful Isabel Archer would throw caution to the wind over such an unattractive and, decidedly, sinister man. It is unfortunate, as the film is an otherwise fairly faithful adaptation of Henry James' complex novel of the same name. It could have been a contender.

4 out of 5 stars Peaches Page, Baby!.......2006-04-19

At first appearance, it looks like a mediocre collection of vintage female wrestling clips, most of which are pretty redundant. The shorts (both in and out of the ring) are interesting and somewhat humourous, but I highly recommend it solely for the inclusion of PIN DOWN GIRLS, a great exploitation fillm starring Tim Farrell and the wondrous, mysterious Peaches Page. A great find!

4 out of 5 stars If You do like women's wrestling, buy this........2005-08-10

THis is for the women wrestling fan. This is NOT the bad, cheap, half-assed-at-best crap attempts made by W.E.W., (W.E.W. it's not extreme, it's veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery lame.) It's not the over choreographed WWE, where it's more about T and A than whatever limited wrestling skills those women have. No, this is womens wrestling at it's best. these are hard brawled matches from the pioneers of women wrestling. IF you are a die hard fan of women wrestling/females fighting, then this DVD is a fitting homage to the women who came loooong before the DWW,WWWE, W.E.W.,G.L.O.W., and the lesser feamle fight franchises that are around, good and/or bad. Yeah, the fighting isn't too great, but without productions like this, made by women who fought when it was most definately taboo. Plus, it's got over two hours of fighting, yeah, the "Pin Down Girls" movie isn't the best, but I consider it a cult classic for any true die hard female fight fan.

1 out of 5 stars boring stuff.......2003-06-13

This dvd contains a lot of old black & white wrestling stuff but it is not interesting at all. It contains a small black & white movie which is about a female wrestler and also a long boring catfight with very bad sound and picture. If you love womens wrestling and catfighting do not buy this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Punishers Of The Ring.......2001-10-10

Womens wrestling as it used to be:women who sat on your face or
squeezed your head between their thighs till you you were barely conscious, and did not feel sorry for you. This DVD is brimming with the head scissors and face sitting you loved to watch. Women, especially, will enjoy this retrospective, watching their own kind laying on their sides, crushing heads between their powerful legs, or staring down at their oppponents eyes, the only part of their faces visible, as their bottoms smother the consciousness from them.
