Amazon.com essential video
The burning intensity of Russell Crowe (L.A. Confidential) first lit up screens as a hate-filled, Mein Kampf-spouting skinhead in this brutal Australian drama. Crowe glowers from under his deep-set eyes as Hando, the creepy but charismatic leader of a racist gang who declares war on the Asian immigrants pouring into Melbourne. His rage erupts in violent attacks on the local Vietnamese community, but when his victims fight back his gang breaks up, and Hando flees the city with his best buddy Davey (Daniel Pollock) and redheaded hellion Gabe (Jacqueline McKenzie), a rich girl runaway who turns the dynamic duo into a splintered love triangle. Writer-director Geoffrey Wright's matter-of-fact treatment of this subculture eschews social commentary for visceral immediacy. His portrait of white supremacist punks living like squatters on the fringes of Australian society is powered by coiled anger and simmering frustration, which finds its outlet in brutal fights and murderous rampages (the intense violence earned the film an NC-17 rating). The lack of moral position may bother some people, especially in light of Wright's sympathetic treatment of particular members of Hando's racist army, and the cold, hate-driven violence is sometimes hard to watch, but his vivid characters and richly drawn world create a compelling drama for adventurous filmgoers. --Sean Axmaker
Description
The controversial film drew rave reviews for its visceral look at how the seeds of racial hatred, fueled by fear and paranoia, can explode into raw violence. Winner of three Australian Film Institute Awards, including Best Actor for Crowe, Romper Stomper is "exhilarating and utterly brilliant" (Preview Magazine).

live the life, then criticize........2007-05-21
this movie portrays many elements of the skinhead lifestyle in true fashion. i have never witnessed fight scenes that were more true to life than these. i have owned a copy of this film for eight years, and i have viewed it many times over. those of you that hope for a happy ending and forget that real life is the law of the jungle, will not enjoy this slap in the face. i am not racist, but i appreciate the brutal honesty that geoffrey wright portrays. i was disappointed with the audio soudtrack liner notes where he proclaims that OI! is a strictly racist form of underground music. for a man who did such an excellent job of portraying a subculture, i felt let down by this mainstream generalization.
needless to say that i watched american history x only one time. it was inaccurate, sensationalist, and complete fodder for the masses. those of you that have recommended it are blind, sheltered, and ignorant.
don`t question that statement.
walk a mile.
romper stomper stinks.......2006-12-30
I should of listened to the bad reviews, they were right. I am very good at knowing a good movie from bad and i watch all kinds of movies so if you want to save yourself so money go and rent American history X.
I got caught up in the Russel Crowe facter as he is a very good actor and I wanted to see an early Crowe movie. Some one said this movie was violent, ive seen more realistic violence on The Sitcom Happy Days than this movie. The character develepment is terrible, the story line is terribly done, I thought I was watching a movie someone made on there home camera, and Russel Crowe just aint that good in this movie. I cant believe that this aint in the 2.99 bin with some old martial arts movies, TERRIBLE , IT GETS NO STARS AT ALL. There is nothing at all to like about this movie, NOTHING.....
Disturbing.......2006-08-06
It opens very violent and pretty much stays that way. If they are not fighting it seems this gang of skinheads are verbally abusive with each other. Even their "fun" is scary to watch. Their anger is directed at Vietnamese immigrants moving into their neighborhood and buying up property. A confused, rage filled rich girl joins the gang and makes a bad situation worse. As you can imagine, this isn't going to end well.
This movie brutality is only matched by "The Warriors" which frighten the heck out of me when I was a teenager. This film just disgusted me. There was only one person I could feel for a little. The second in command who falls in love with the rich girl that Hondo (Russell Crowe) claims as his. He seems ready to leave the band and does later.
Is this DVD worth watching? I see it got a lot of accolades and a few awards. And Crowe shows his considerable acting talents. But personally, I think there are better movies about gangs out there to watch that shows gang members as complex people instead of just plain thugs. This seems more about shocking the audience.
Skinheads down under.......2006-07-10
Geoffery Wright's "Romper Stomper" is an unflinching look at life inside a neo-nazi skinhead gang in Austrelia. Their leader is Hondo, (an attention grabing performance by a young Russell Crowe) who is a psycho but intellegent and charismatic. Things are going well until he meets runaway rich girl Gabe (Jacqueline McKenzie). He falls in lust with her, but Hondo's friend Davy (Danial Pollock) falls in love. Couple that with a disasterous raid on Asian immigrants and the gang brakes up and things deterioate from there. This is a interesting look inside skinhead society. The violence is very realistic and more disturbing because of it, and the sex is pretty brutal and grungy too. This is not a glamourous movie, very dirty from it's slum locations to it's character's scummy point of veiw. For the strong of stomach, I recomend it.
This movie is powerful!.......2006-04-24
I saw this movie when it came out in '92 and right away I fell in love with the powerful presence and aura of Russell Crowe. He was a no name in the states then though.
This movie takes you for a wild ride! It's a must see...Russell Crowe is one of the foremost acting talents of the age.
