In this uproarious hit from the director and producers of The Nutty Professor, comic genius Jim Carrey stars as a fast-talking attorney and habitual liar who, forced by his son's birthday wish, must tell the truth for the next 24 hours. 3 out of 5 stars Liar Liar (HD DVD) Review by Justin Sluss.......2007-06-21

The Movie Itself tells the story of how one smooth talking, habitual liar of an attorney "Fletcher Reede" (played by Jim Carey) is forced by his son's birthday wish to have to tell the truth for the next 24 hours. From the second his son "Max" (played by Justin Cooper) blows out his birthday candles until that exact time the next day "Fletcher" (a shady lawyer) is in for 24 hours of telling "the whole truth and nothing but the truth."

This movie for it's time was a huge hit and allowed star Jim Carey to portray a character that looked normal (meaning not have to wear a wig, make-up, etc.) but still allowed him to be able to do his crazy spontaneous comedy type of acting at the same time. This film is not only hilarious and one that is sure to make you laugh but it's also kind of touching the story between the father, son. Obviously not as much so as just downright how funny Jim Carey is in this film. Even with all the other ratings considered this is still a film worth checking out if you have never seen it.

Video Quality on this release is 1080p VC-1 on a 15 gigabyte HD DVD disc. To be a film from 1997 and only on a HD-15 (15gb HD DVD) the video quality here looks really good I think over the original DVD. I for one owned the original `97 DVD release which was actually a 4:3 Fullscreen version, so for me this is almost like night and day but still it's nothing worthy of a 5 star rating. Honestly at times I have to say this is almost just as good as the video transfer for "Bruce Almighty", the other Jim Carey film released the same day on HD DVD. There is some obvious film grain in a few scenes that just hasn't been cleaned up. This translates into some very noticeable film noise in the video presentation from time to time. This is I guess to be expected from a 1997 release like this but I'd have to say the video transfer is an improvement overall and very watchable.

Audio Quality on this release is in Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 @ 1.5Mbps which is an improvement over the original DVD releases' Dolby Digital tracks but still nothing that amazing. It gets 3 stars for being an improvement over the original DVD and really that is why it gets this audio quality rating. The film is primarily dialog driven anyway so it really doesn't matter too much about an improvement in audio quality here. This film is mostly about Jim Carey's character and his hilarious dialog he dishes out once his son has makes the birthday wish. You're most likely going to be laughing so hard at some points I doubt you'll hear too much of the movie's sound over yourself.

Bonus Materials appear to be nothing more than the latest DVD release's ("Collector's Edition") bonus materials ported over and presented in 4:3 standard definition. Really disappointing as you'd expect but let's begin with what all you'll find here. First off there's audio Commentary by Director Tom Shadyac. "Bridging the Comedy Chasm" (16 minutes) starts off to appear to be nothing more than Jim Carey goofing off but soon we get interviews not only from him but also the producer, Director Tom Shadyac and other cast members like the young Justin Cooper. This proves to really showcase Jim obviously more than anybody but it still is worth watching and has some laughs. "Deleted Scene" (4 minutes) is just what you'd expect. Only one deleted scene here obviously but it's a good one if I say so myself. It shows "Fletcher Reede" in a court case (which would have been shown probably near or at the beginning of the film if it had not been deleted) defending this big neanderthal of a criminal against this little old man in a neck brace. It's "Fletcher" at his finest when he could lie. This scene honestly shouldn't have been deleted if you ask me. It's worth 4 minutes of pure laughter, I think anyway. Last we get a very horrible quality (for both video and sound) version of the original Theatrical Trailer to the film. These bonus materials are nothing short of really disappointing as I started this off saying. The only reason this got as high of a rating as it did for bonus materials is the fact Universal not only includes bookmarks now but the ability to make In and Out's to your favorite scenes. If it were not for that, this would have been rated probably 1 or 1 1/2 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Loved Tonja Walker too... the whole cast.......2006-04-06

I hadn't seen this film in a long time and had forgotten Tonja Walker was in it... I have been a fan of hers for a long time. This must have been one of her first movies.
Matt Dillon was believable and charming and also illicits great sympathy. Cindy was good too. A great coming of age to real love story.

4 out of 5 stars MATT DILLION IS DARLING!.......2006-02-26

Okay so this may not be THE best Matt Dillion film but you must admit he is rather darling. The film has some touching moments and some really weird ones (Lora Mae....she is TOO much!)
There were actually 2 endings to this film. One in which the character Ginny died and the one that is on this DVD. I wish they would have shown both and added a few extras. It's a worth buying to add to you Matt Dillion collection.

5 out of 5 stars Liar's Moon song title.......2005-03-02

Answer to question about a song title in the movie.
First words of song "I'll love you forever..."
Song title is "Forever" and was written by Ray Benson.
Paw Paw Music is the publisher. Located in Austin, TX.
Hope this helps.

3 out of 5 stars For Teen Girls.......2005-01-17

This is an early Matt Dillon movie. He looks like he's 17 years old. Cindy Fisher plays the sweet rich girl that falls unexplainably in love with a local poor heartthrob. Hmmm, yes, he's good to look at and Dillon is polite, but it's hard to say what quality of speech or physicality attracts Fisher. Then there are the usual difficulties of youth and thorny parents. This one has a twist that only seems to happen if the setting is the South, Texas, or Bill Clinton's hometown of Hope, AK. I won't let the main complexity out of the bag, but our star-crossed lovers have their hands full.

There's plenty here to thrill and enchant a teen girl. The plot is all melodrama, soap opera, and teen-sex stage show. There are elements of humor to relieve the relentless drama: a greased pig contest, a drinking bout, prep boy gets sick on a carnival whip, or Dillon pays for Fisher's kiss at the same carnival. These chuckles reminded me of American Pie, a later and far superior film. The drama is Rebel Without a Cause, but it's inferior to the older film. Again, this one is for Matt Dillion fans and teen girls.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting little movie.......2003-05-30

Liars Moon is a movie that never gets talked about anymore the only star I recognize is Matt Dillon but he never talks about this film anymore and all of the other actors I have never seen before. It was made in the early 80's but the film quality looks older than what the movie appears. This is such a nice little love story that is not over the top. This movie was very overlooked years ago and still is now a great story about southern romance I never knew that there was such a great story like this.

A sweet love story. Poor boy falls in love with rich girl. The parents try to stop it. They elope are are hunted down by the parents. A terrible "secret" is revealed which turns out to be false, but not before causing disastrous results. I've actually seen two endings to this movie. Not sure which ending this DVD will hold.

"There is no real you," jokes Lynn Margulies (Courtney Love) to her boyfriend, Andy Kaufman (Jim Carrey), as he grows more contemplative during a battle with cancer. "I forgot," he says, playing along, though the question of Kaufman's reality is always at issue in Milos Forman's underappreciated Man on the Moon.

The story of Kaufman's quick rise to fame through early appearances on Saturday Night Live and the conceptual stunts that made his club and concert appearances an instant legend in the irony-fueled 1970s and early '80s, Man on the Moon never makes the mistake of artificially delineating Comic Andy from Private Andy. True, we get to see something of his private interest in meditation and some of the flakier extremes of alternative medicine, but even these interludes suggest the presence of an ultimate con behind apparent miracles of transformation.

Screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (The People vs. Larry Flynt) allege that transformation was Kaufman's purpose--more than a shtick but less than a destiny. As we see him constantly up the ante on the credibility of his performance personae (the obnoxious nightclub comic Tony Clifton; the insulting, misogynistic professional wrestler), Forman makes it harder and harder to detect Kaufman's sleight of hand. But it's there, always there, always the transcendent Andy watching the havoc he creates and the emotions he stirs.

Carrey is magnificent as Kaufman, re-creating uncannily detailed comedy pieces etched in the memory of anyone who remembers the real Andy. But while Carrey's mimicry of Kaufman is flawless and funny, the actor probes much deeper into an enigmatic character who, in life, was often a moving target even for those closest to him. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Probably a better rental.......2007-05-14

I really enjoyed this movie, and it does a great job telling Andy's story. However, I can't say I would watch this movie more than once a year, so a rental would probably work for this movie. I recommend this movie highly, and enjoyed it, however the bonus DVD features are kind of disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding.......2007-02-01

Jim Carrey is absolutely spellbinding in his portrayal of the late Andy Kaufman. Lore has it that Carrey stayed in character even when he wasn't shooting a scene. I may be incorrect, but I don't believe he was even nominated for an Oscar for this role and that is an absolute joke. The movie does a good job of moving through the different periods of Kaufman's ever-changing comedy periods. The one thing that I didn't particularly like about the movie was the time devoted to crowd shots, but I suppose that was Forman's way of showing Kaufman's effect on an audience. Highly recommended both for Carrey's performance and to learn about Kaufman.

5 out of 5 stars Man On The Moon.......2006-10-08

Andy Kaufman isn't as famous in Australia as he is in America. I remember the first time I saw "Man in the Moon". I thought it was a very interesting concept, a film about an unconventional comedian who liked to provoke not just laughter from his audience, but confusion, anger and relief. It wasn't until halfway through that someone told me that it was based on a true story. "You mean, someone actually did all this?" I said, impressed. Kaufman must have been quite a character in real life, a character in more ways than one!

Jim Carrey plays Andy Kaufman, and I think he does a pretty good job potraying Kaufman from his low-key beginnings in the comedy clubs, through his days in "Taxi" all the way to the Carnegie Hall concert just before his death. He plays him as a passionate, curious man with a vision, a man who likes to have things his own way, and has a few ways of getting it. He's a man who seemed spontaneous but seemed to plan things both on stage and in life very carefully.

There are a few special features on this DVD, and they're pretty interesting. There's a selection of deleted scenes, a featurette on the real Andy Kaufman, the original theatrical trailer, and two music videos from REM, who contributed to much of the soundtrack.

Overall, worth a look for fans of biopics.

3 out of 5 stars Weird.......2006-05-29

In this Andy Kaufman bio the viewer is left asking one question: Who is weirder, Jim Carey or Andy Kaufman. I don't know the answer, but both of them are fruitcakes.

The problem with this movie is that if it is accurate, Kaufman was really not a very nice man, so you really don't feel for him when he gets sick. Also, the movie never really gave much insight into Kaufman. It's like nobody knows him or understands him. Not uncommon amongst comedians, most of them are messed up people.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you very much..........2006-01-24

The greatest comedian who ever lived! Andy was very special, a rare breed! My hometown hero from Long Island, NY. Sorry that you had to go so quickly. God bless you Andy where ever you are? Here I come to save the day...
