Before director Ken Russell's name became synonymous with cinematic extravagance and overkill, he actually directed what is one of the most passionate and involving adaptations of D.H. Lawrence in recent memory. Oliver Reed and Alan Bates star as friends who fall in love with a pair of sisters (Jennie Linden and Glenda Jackson, who won an Oscar for the role). But the relationships take markedly different directions, as Russell explores the nature of commitment and love. Bates and Linden learn to give themselves to each other; the more withdrawn Reed cannot, finally, connect with the demanding and challenging Jackson. Shot with great sensuality, it was surprisingly frank for its period (1970) and includes one of the most charged scenes in movie history: Bates and Reed as manly men, wrestling nude by firelight. --Marshall Fine

Need a good cry? A real fistful-of-Kleenex, cathartic, "Oh (sob) my (sob) God (sob)" weeping jag? The deft and lovely Miracle in the Rain is exactly what the love doc ordered. The 1956 classic stars Jane Wyman as Ruth, that long-lost movie heroine type: a working-girl spinster caring for her ailing mother, toiling at her mundane job and feeling life's passing her by. Well, life has a little surprise up its sleeve, in the form of a random meeting on the streets of New York, with a soldier named Arthur (Van Johnson), who's on temporary leave during World War II. The streets are dingy and the rain is pounding, but the mood is changed; two lost souls connect. What follows is a believable, heart-wrenching tale with a great script (courtesy of Ben Hecht), and terrific performances by the two leads and a brassy Eileen Heckart as Ruth's best pal (and chaperone on the couple's first date!). The film presages the later weepy Somewhere in Time, with its echoes of fate, chance, and even the role of a tiny coin. Fans of romance of all eras, who believe what Arthur says--"Love never dies"--should wrap themselves in the cocoon of Miracle in the Rain--and never stop believing in miracles. --A.T. Hurley
Description
Wartime romance about a lonely man and woman who meet one rainy afternoon in New York.

"Absence Makes the Heart Fonder".......2007-05-14
`Miracle in the Rain' is a could-be classic. Off the radar screen, `Miracle...' is an offbeat adventure, celebrating ordinary people coming to life when able to do so. Both romantic and religious, it stars Jane Wyman in a remarkable performance as Ruth Wood, a spinster caught in life's dreary web. She meets Private Art Huegenot (played with lively spirit by Van Johnson*--not my favorite actor--in a role of a lifetime.) The developments are life-changing and exuberant.
The story begins with Ruth going to work. Quiet, she works in an office with a blond bombshell who makes out with the boss in his office. Nearby, a young man keeps a map in front and keeps track of the raging war. And as a consolation, a kindly woman offers to take the edge off of Ruth's solitary existence. Later, in a New York rainstorm, she bumps into Private Art, who, given a pass to enjoy the city, can only glower about rain and everything else. Charming the socks off Ruth, who knows nothing but her day job and her night support of her ailing and abandoned mother, he convinces her to let him show her the town she`s never seen before. Cautiously, she warms up to him. When there's freedom at point zero, both the colorful extravert and the shy recluse hit it off. Then, the specter of war looms over them both. Having lost her father who abandoned both her mother and herself, she can only feel bitterly cheated, missing out on a brief awakening in her sadly pedestrian life. The movie interweaves the stories skillfully many years before modern movies like today do.
`Miracle in the Rain' deserves to be unearthed by classic movie fans. At first the characters and development are genuine and believable. Later, a good film becomes a fine one with loose ends coming together and a satisfying resolution for those who love old-fashioned movies. Rent or buy 'Miracle in the Rain,' and it could the next 'It's a Wonderful Life'.
*Johnson often played the stock garrulous roles. Here he's perfect.
MIRACLE IN THE RAIN.......2007-05-12
LOVE THIS MOVIE. BROUGHT BACK MANY MEMORIES FROM MY CHILDHOOD.
a lost gem.......2007-04-07
a real british rareity this..and very enjoyable with john mills surprisingly good in a musical , although he did start his career on the stage in musical comedies
A nice Sentimental film.......2007-04-01
A good-hearted movie with Van Johnson being his most appealing and Jane Wyman being her sweetest A good group of supporting character actors gives this a nice New York feel. Although at times it might be a bit corny and melodramatic, it is a movie free of violence, vulgarity, and the shallow erotica that is so prevalent in our own time. Watch and enjoy.
Touching Wartime Romance.......2007-03-30
"I love you as if I'd always known you. I'll be back as if I'd never left you." -- Van Johnson
Jane Wyman is wonderful as a lonely woman brought to life by the unexpected attention of soldier Van Johnson in this tender soaper. Though it doesn't have quite the charm of "The Clock" with Garland and Walker, there is something very real and ultimately moving about this bittersweet story of faliing in love during wartime.
Ruthie (Wyman) lives in New York where she takes care of her heartbroken mother, still shell-shocked years after Ruthie's father called one night to say he was leaving. It has not allowed the sweet Ruthie much of a life outside her job and mother. When she meets a soldier in an elevator named Art (Val Johnson), his warm and friendly manner is just the right medicine for Ruthie, who's never really been noticed.
Johnson really shines in a role tailor-made for his boyish charm. He is lonely too, and masks his need with constant chatter so that Ruthie can't tell him to go away. Art sort of invites himself to dinner and over the next two days they paint a picture of love's transforming magic, which does not always take huge amounts of time. It is a picture painted on a canvas of fresh grass in Central Park, boat races, and a city made for falling in love.
When Art's 153rd is slated to pull out, however, their happiness is interrupted. It is the small touches, such as Ruthie's pride in a story Art gets publised in the paper, and a truck full of soldiers yelling goodbye to Ruthie when Art leaves that make this film rise above its soap opera origins. Ben Hecht's script, based on his own story, doesn't hurt either. A lovely and subtle score by Franz Waxman adds just the right mood to this special film.
Writing Art every day until he can write her back, a letter finally arrives for a lonely Ruthie, waiting for the voice and words which will make her heart live again. To reveal more would be unforgivable to anyone with a romantic heart who hasn't seen this yet. I can only say that a scene in the rain is a poignant moment never forgotten by those who have seen it, either recently or years ago.
A great cast gives Johnson and Wyman the room they need for two lost souls to find each other. Those with a romantic heart will find much to enjoy with this film, finally available on DVD.

Louisa May Alcott's beloved story is one of the most-read novels ever written. It has also proved popular film and telefilm fodder (at least six versions plus a TV series). In addition, Little Women is one of those rare literary projects that can truly be done well on screen. This, the 1933 version, chronicles the lives and loves of sisters Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth (played, respectively, by Katharine Hepburn, Frances Dee, Joan Bennett, and Jean Parker). It's a superior rendering to the amiable, perky 1949 version with June Allyson, Janet Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Margaret O'Brien, and Peter Lawford, and comparable to the beautiful, feminist Gillian Armstrong 1994 take. Douglass Montgomery's Laurie isn't nearly as dreamy as Christian Bale's (1994), but the lack of chemistry between him and Hepburn's Jo is perfect for the story, in which Jo loves him like a brother. Jo's real love she offers up to perhaps the finest Professor Bhaer (Paul Lukas). Character actress Edna May Oliver is at her indignant best as Aunt March. Director George Cukor's vision is elegant, warm, and as true to the original source material as 117 minutes allows. This Little Women was a huge box-office hit, and broke all the records to that time. --N.F. Mendoza

Fantastic, could not be a "re-make" today, no one could do it better!
Not so great.......2007-05-01
There are three versions of little women, and this would have to be my least favorite. the only good thing about this movie is Katherine! She gives a great preformance as the charactor, but that's the only thing that keeps this movie at being one star movie apposed to being a complete drag. I probably wouldn't actually choose to watch this moovie again. If you're are looking for good really good version try the 1949 version with June Allyson,Mary Astor, Janet Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Margret O'Brien, and Peter Lawford.Or try the 1994 version with Winona Ryder, Christian Bale, and Gabriel Byrne just to name a few. Both are wonderful, and worth watching again and again.
Refreshingly Sweet.......2007-02-06
Without comparing this version of Little Women to the 1994 remake I grew up with, I can heartily endorse it as fun-loving, wholesome family entertainment that does justice to a story we hold dear. I suppose one has to develope a taste for these older movies, however . . . and I'm not thinking about the black and white. There are so many parts where it's hard to keep up with the diolog, probably because I'm used to newer movies where they always zoom in on who ever is speaking. Katherine Hepburn did good acting, there is no doubt . . . but looked too old for a teenage role, and she oddly resembled Lucy ("I Love Lucy"), giving me a weird feeling about her through the first half of the movie. The potrayel of her sister/brother relationship with Laurie was brought out better in this movie than in any other, in my opinion. In the 1949 one Laurie seemed to be sweet on her to begin with, and that wasn't the way it was in the book. In the 1994 one with Christian Bale and Winona Ryder, their relationship was playful, but in the book they also "quarreled" a lot, and the 1994 version didn't bring that out enough to explain Jo's rejection of his suit. The Laurie in this 1933 version, however, looked way younger than Jo, and a bit frail. And, too, his facial expressions were sometimes nerdy, and sometimes cute, making me edgy. The Beth they had was PERFECT, as was the Amy, but Meg's character was a bit flat, as she wasn't given many lines, and I only remember one scene which Mr. March was in. John Brook was also a side character. Mr. Lawrence and Aunt March were given big parts, though, and were highly entertaining. The Marmee they had gave a sincere effort, you could tell, and truly seemed the warm, caring mother of four girls from Alcott's novel. I would reckon that most of her acting career was on the stage, however, because it shows in her overworked gestures, facial expressions, and intonation. (Stage actors had to be overly dramatic in a time before the magic of fancy camera work.) Jo's Proffessor from the 1994 movie is and will remain my die-hard favorite. The new version did the best with Jo and the Proffessor's romance. My favorite thing about this movie was the quiet, unforced reverence it radiates. Marmee and her girls are shown praying at different times and even sing "Abide With Me" as Beth plays the piano, and the March girls are rightly concerned about fashioning their characters as best they can. Very wholesome stuff. This is one good movie, and I'd reccomend it to anyone.
cukor & hepburn would go on to better things.......2006-07-04
katharine hepburn heads the cast in george cukors too respectful treatment of the louisa may alcott novel. a pleasant enuf way to spend a couple hours, but i wouldnt seek it out.
Good, But a Little Too Stagey and Creaky!.......2006-03-18
This is my second favorite movie version of Little Women. It is good but I found it to be a little too stagey and creaky!

Description
This compelling rendition of the literary masterpiece is a visual stunner and very likely the mostsensuous film ever made (N.Y. Daily News). Glenda Jackson garnered the first of her two Oscars®* for her superb performance in director Ken Russell and writer Larry Kramer's brilliant exploration of the complexities of sexuality and romantic love. Growing up in the sheltered society of 1920s England, Gudrun (Jackson) and Ursula (Jennie Linden) know little about the ways of love. So when they pursue thrilling, torrid affairs with a notorious playboy (Alan Bates) and abrooding philanderer (Oliver Reed), what they discover about their lovers, and themselves, may be more all-consumingand dangerously volatilethan they ever dared imagine.

PERHAPS THE BEST MOVIE IN MY COLLECTION.......2007-05-07
Every aspect, from script to production quality to casting/acting is Great.
Over the years I have viewed it many times (over 20 times!). Now, so many years after its initial release, it still stands with the best of today. Everyone should see this movie - again and again.
Time Has No Power Over Women In Love.......2007-04-16
***This comment may content spoilers***
Ken Russell's adaptation of D. H. Lawrence's novel Women in Love is one of my favorite films. It explores the hearts and minds, personalities, and philosophies of four intelligent and educated young people in the beginning of 20-th century and their romantic relationships (heterosexual and homosexual, friendship, love and desire). They are played by Alan Bates, Oliver Reed, Glenda Jackson, and Jennie Linden.
Glenda Jackson who was relatively unknown at the time won her first Oscar for a magnificent performance in a most difficult role: her Gudrun is not a likable character, she is an self-centered predator, but she is honest and very interesting. I read some comments that she was not beautiful. Well, she may not have been pretty but I believe there is more than prettiness to make a woman loved, and admired otherwise a lot of women in this world would never be able to learn the feeling. Gudrun's intelligence, strong character, and self-confidence make her very attractive and desirable.
The film has many unforgettable scenes with two that stand alone after all these years. First of them is one of the most provocative and delightful sexual scenes ever filmed. It takes place during a picnic. Alan Bates dressed in a light white suite describes to the others how to eat a fig. He carefully holds it, and then pulls it open while he compares the process to a woman and looks teasingly at shy Ursula, Gudrun's sister (Jennie Linden). This little scene is as powerful as a famous wrestling scene, even though everybody who saw the film would recall the wrestling scene as a most memorable in "Women in Love".
The wrestling in the nude was Lawrence's (and Russell's ) solution to allow two men to relieve the horror and dreadfulness of the drowning tragedy that occurred shortly before. The scene takes place for long time, 5-10 minutes, with the fire from fireplace highlighting Reed's and Bate's bodies as each struggles against the other. The scene is extremely sensual but whether they engaged in sex or not we don't know...
This is a very special film that has not lost its beauty and appeal now even though it was made over 35 years ago. Extraordinarily striking and highly sensual, it is a must see for anyone truly interested in film.
Lush .......2007-04-10
The story line was poetic and the scenery was very lush. The acting was great and the charactors were well developed from book to screen. The actors were all sexy and were great in their prospective roles.
Women in Love .......2007-02-24
A wonderful film with a stellar British cast. Leaves you wondering...whatever happened to Glenda Jackson? She was one of the great actresses of the 20th Century as her work here in this film shows.
Key to Lawrence.......2005-10-08
This is a necessary film to getting a handle on D.H. Lawrence, a writer much more discussed than understood. Director Russell properly finds his key and turns it relentlessly: the art deco aesthetic, both formal and almost too self-consciously daring, which prevailed in Europe between World War I and Wold War II. It never took total flight and is easily parodied; it is thought of today mainly as a style of decorating furniture or buildings. It had a short life and was obliterated since the second war; Lawrence was quite up to his neck in it, and its strangeness throws people off who plunge into his works looking for the sexual liberator. That is all there, all right, but in his time the chick was still largely imprisoned in the egg, so to speak, of late 19th century Victorian aesthetics too.
Simply, it was a transitional period, and can be a little edgy. Russell is not afraid of it at all and has the guts to drink his Lawrence straight. So you get marvelous visual emblems wide open to parody or ridicule in lesser hands, stunningly presented: the dead couple like a bas relief sculpture on the floor of the drained pond; the naked male wrestlers curling into each other in a dark room, their forms outlined by dim light. Like it or not this was what was beautiful in Lawrence and the film pays it due homage without being subservient; Russell gets in his licks too. The aesthetic was so self-conscious that it can be delightfully hoisted up the flag-pole for a laugh, too, as in the wicked scene of Hermione and her parlor dancers.
There is no need to summarize the story of the two sets of lovers; just see it. The major actors have never been better. They become the complex characters, who while not totally explained are something better: totally present and alive. They pick up a big slice of the private and public aura of the period in their wake. Also, the film has the most incredible punch line at the end which Russell just perfectly transmits.

Customer Reviews:
Classic Grier.......2005-02-10
I would only recommend this film
because it is an interesting alternative
to the usual scenery in which we are
accustomed to seeing Pam Grier.
Otherwise, it's stock 70's female exploitation,
in which Pam Grier led the pack. Very little plot:
exotic women are kidnapped from foreign locales and
are trained in the arena, where they put on spectacles
for eager, bloodthirsty onlookers. In the end, the fittest
of the fittest, Grier and Markov, are forced to fight each
other. Fight or die, one or both. In the end, they both
rebel and race for freedom while pursued by the emperor's
soldiers.
Not much else to it.
Even nudity isn't a plus here.
It was not until this film
that I noticed how extremely BEAUTIFUL
Margret Markov is. Whatever happened to her?
I think this film is worth the time, but I don't
think you'd want to buy it, unless you already have a
space on your DVD rack for once-viewed movies that will never again see daylight.
This would be one of those movies.
You Gotta Love the 70s -- Action - Nudity - Lust - Catfights.......2004-04-26
Two viscous catfights, three duels in the arena, a gladiatrix revolt, and a running battle through the catacombs as the girls escape make for plenty of action. Plus for Pam Grier fans, a full frontal nudity shower scene. The movie portrays them as playthings for the vicarious bloodlust of Imperial Rome, slave-girl gladiators forced to fight or die in spectacles of barbarous combat. Pam Grier and Margaret Markov head the cast of sweaty sword-and-sandal sisters.
Pure Awful!.......2003-02-11
Yeah I know that this was a "B" movie but this was a chore to watch! I purchased it hoping like every other male to get to see some great nude scenes of Pam Grier and the few nude scenes (only 2 of Pam) are not even worth it. The picture guality for a DVD left much to be desired. There was no plot whatsoever but then again this is a Corman picture. Dolemite movies don't have a plot either but I'd much rather sit through one of his ridiculous attempts at cinema than this stinker. Like Pam Grier? Get Coffy and don't waste your money on this garbage!
A must-be for Pam Grier-Fans.......2001-07-17
Every Pam Grier-Fan must have seen this film. The story is nothing special, but there are some nude-scenes worthseen. There is a shower scene with Pam Grier, in which she shows her pubic hair. If you are not interested in that scene, forget about the film!
Not the greatest Grier..........2001-07-12
If you're looking for a funky sleazy flick like Coffy you've come to the wrong place, as although this sand & sandals "epic" has it's fair quota of sleaze it's just not up to the Jack Hill standards.
Grier is great, as always, and Margret Markov gives good gladiator as well, but the film really starts to sag in the second half when it can't make it's mind up if it wants to be a tounge in cheek catfight movie or a serious Ben Hur style epic.
Good...but not good enough - thumbs sideways.

Women In Love.......2007-05-14
Too much "intallectual" chatter. Little about Love.
touching and funny.......2007-05-09
It's a kind of film based on real life experiences of lesbians and as it's not always easy to be lesbians, depending much where you come from, here they depict some stories which explore the difficulties and the good things in relationships. I enjoyed it very much and the actressess are really good.

Even as I worked on this project I didn't know if it was real or not. But if you ask me about it, I will deny it all... Mixing genres like most people mix drinks, the "Last Temptation in Thailand" is a reality based lie wrapped in a philosopher's illusion of truth. The Buddha said desire causes pain, but I went to Thailand anyway. My story begins on the road to Bangkok. It ends hot on a cold trail to nowhere - a six month odyssey through ancient temples, whore-bars and even a brush with love. The open road called, I had no choice, I had to go. The Buddha headed out on the open road over 2500 ago years to face his final temptation under the Bodhi tree. When the gods sent down the most beautiful goddess in the heavens to tempt his mortal soul the accounts read, "He almost wavered, but then he wavered not". Me? I waver with even the slightest hint of a comely bargirl nearby. Thailand is a place where not only are the footsteps of the Buddha still echoing in the sands of time, but where the women are free and the men don't mind paying the price. Every desire has it's price, though, as I end up paying for love like most men pay for a cold beer and find the whole thing kind of liberating. So when love finally knocks on my door I know it's time to go, lest I pay the ultimate price... freedom is a hell of thing to lose to any woman's charms. Finally, hearing echoes of the Buddha's ancient call to moksha or liberation, I hop aboard a boat to nowhere sailing through the beatific seas of Thailand. Hot on a cold trail, I hear rumors that the illusive Buddha was last seen somewhere in a bar down south... I had no choice, I had to go.

This giftset includes 14 favorite heartwarming and hilarious romantic comedies including: Baby Boom, When Harry Met Sally, Thelma & Louise, Mystic Pizza, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Hannah and Her Sisters, Mermaids, Not Without My Daughter, At First Sight, Women In Love, Paperback Romance, Heart Breakers, Moonstruck and Beauty Shop.
Customer Reviews:
Depends on whose mother we are talking about.......2007-03-17
This is really not a collection of 14 romantic comedies as the description says, but probably all of them could be classified as "chick movies". Nine of them are five star films and are so well known they really need no introduction - Baby Boom, When Harry Met Sally, Thelma & Louise, Mystic Pizza, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Hannah and Her Sisters, Mermaids, Women In Love, and Moonstruck. The other five movies are between three and four stars - Not Without My Daughter, At First Sight, Paperback Romance, Heart Breakers, and Beauty Shop. None of them are bad films. "Not Without My Daughter" is definitely no romantic comedy, and neither is "Thelma & Louise". Both have serious dramatic content. "Not Without My Daughter" definitely looks like it was made as an Oscar vehicle for Sally Field, and may be hard to watch for some people due to its intensity. It is based on the true story of a woman trying to take her daughter out of Iran without her husband's consent. "Paperback Romance" is not what it sounds like. Rather than being some silly Harlequin-type romance it is a pretty smart film that has a lot to say about disability and how it is perceived. "Heart Breakers" sounded good - a mother and daughter team conning wealthy men - but it just never pulled itself together, and "At First Sight" was just too slow for my taste. I liked "Beauty Shop" a great deal, but I am a real Queen Latifah fan, and I can see how you might not like the movie as much as I did if you aren't a fan of hers. The best way I can describe it is a female version of "Barbershop", which I also liked.
I'd say this is a very economical way to own these 14 films, and would make a great gift for any fan of chick flicks, but that is not an assumption you can make about all or even most mothers.

Customer Reviews:
poor picture quality.......2007-01-18
Among my collection this DVD has the worst picture quality. I had expected beautiful pictures underlining a romantic love story. The story itself seems little inspired and even a better technical quality would not add more than one additional star, particularly in consideration of the price.
