If you ever need dramatic proof that adultery is inevitably destructive, look no further than Adrian Lyne's Unfaithful. Drawing inspiration from Claude Chabrol's 1969 film La Femme Infidèle, the director of Fatal Attraction is mining similar territory here, but this grownup thriller is more intimate than Lyne's dead-bunny potboiler, probing more deeply into the rush of conflicting emotions provoked by infidelity. In what many critics praised as the role of her career, Diane Lane plays the instigator of emotional turmoil, a seemingly happy housewife and fundraiser who cheats on her devoted husband (Richard Gere, in a welcomed change of pace) when she casually encounters a seductive Frenchman (cliché alert!) played by Olivier Martinez. Allowing his actors to speak volumes without words, Lyne emphasizes silent tension over explicit thrills, creating a sexually charged thriller that remains riveting even as it turns partially predictable. "Someone always gets hurt," says one character in a pivotal scene, and Unfaithful fulfills that prophesy in a timeless tale of passion. --Jeff Shannon
Description
From the director of Fatal Attraction comes "a steamy thriller" (People Magazine) about physical passion so intense, it consumes everything - and everyone - in its path. Edward and Connie Summer (Richard Gere, Diane Lane) have the perfect life: a happy marriage, an eight year old son, and a beautiful house in the suburbs. But when Connie's chance encounter with a handsome stranger (Olivier Martinez) erupts into a full-blown affair, desire becomes obsession, and the true price of betrayal takes a shattering toll. Pulsing with heart-pounding suspense and erotic thrills, Unfaithful is "sexy", stylish and seductive!" (Wireless Magazine)

4 out of 5 stars UNFAITHFULNESS = TRAGEDY.......2007-06-27

I really enjoyed this movie. I have it in my dvd collection. Both Diane Lane and Richard Gere render remarkable performances in their turns as husband and wife. In fact it was this movie that made me a fan of Richard Gere. This movie is full of lust, sex, raw passion and, of course, betrayal. Pampered housewife meets sexy French book dealer. Their affairs leads to tragedy.

Diane Lane is absolutely gorgeous. I have always thought so. She is killer in this role and I was glad when she received an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the lusting housewife. Her character engages in a torrid affair with a book dealer whom she literally runs into one day. At first she throws herself into the affair but eventually guilt pays her a visit. Unfortunately guilt comes too late.

The husband, suspecting his wife is being unfaithful, has his wife followed. He then confronts his wife's lover. At first the meeting is calm, although the viewer can sense there is a sick morbidity underlying it. The first time I watched this movie I was unprepared for the scene with the snow globe. It was so unexpected and sickened me so much that I literally fainted. It is after this scene that the movie turns to slow decay (not of quality of film but of lives unraveling). The heaviness of death at first lingers and then becomes pervasive as husband and wife slowly confront the reality of their situation and begin to accept the consequences of their actions.

It is a sad, tragic movie in the end. Some reviewers have compared it to Fatal Attraction although I don't see the comparison at all. At the end of this movie, everyone involved loses. There is a strong moral to this story. The film is in no way preachy. Rather it leaves you with a pang in your heart as you grieve for a family torn apart by adultery.

Unfaithful is an excellent drama and I highly recommend it.

I don't get it...This movie (about a highly toxic love triangle) started off strong--it literally had me pinned to the television. Then it just tanked and FLAT LINED!

In ending of this film was just way too soft to justify the initial explosion.

4 out of 5 stars Raw Review of Unfaithful.......2007-05-26

Adrian Lyne shoots Unfaithful as if hed been in the situation before. Maybe it's some of that "Fatal Attraction" energy left over that kept the complexity of Gere's and Lanes relationship right on. Not to mention, Gere and Lane's performance is excellent. You can't help but FEEEEL the tension build as Lane's slips into the life of being Unfaithful...

Okay folks - So what happened here?!

Overall the acting was great, primarily Diane of course! Script, great. Music, great. Steamy scenes, great and definitely necessary! I mean, what woman doesn't want to be rough and spontaneous every now and then?

HOWEVER - Was anyone else left hanging? If not, what do you believe happened? ANSWERS AND COMMENTS WELCOME :o)

CAN YOU ANSWER THIS FOR ME??? --
When at the intersection, do they end up moving on with their lives? OR, does Gere actually submit himself to the police? That whole scene just left me confused and wanting more. Anyway, I just assumed he turns himself in being that they where at a stand still at the intersection in front of the police station.

Regardless, this movie deserves 5 stars. Olivier Martenez gets two thumbs up and a big kiss from me! AND NO, I'M NOT MARRIED.

4 out of 5 stars Really good movie.......2007-04-09

While I am not a Richard Gere fan, I have to say this is a really good movie. A loving wife has an affiar with a french stranger. Her husband eventually finds out and has his revenge, but only for a moment until he has realized what he has done. Now he must decided to come clean, or just pretend it did not happen. The bulk of the movie is the affair and all the places and ways she cheats. But a good movie, Diane Lane, and Olivier Martenez make it very watchable.

5 out of 5 stars The Unfaithful Wife.......2007-07-02

Murder maestro Chabrol is one of the heralded French New Wave directors whose intelligent twists on genre (thrillers are his domain) ushered in an exciting new era in filmmaking. In "Wife," he offers a fresh take on the standard crime-of-passion tale, with the intense Bouquet playing a wealthy cuckold and Audran, Chabrol's own beautiful spouse, lending her ironic talents to the role of über-bored trophy wife. Chabrol's graceful camerawork, his sardonic attitude toward the nouveau riche, and a disquieting resolution will make you faithful to this "Wife." (Note: Divorce yourself from Adrian Lyne's wan 2002 remake.)

4 out of 5 stars for fans of Claude Chabrol and Stephane Audran.......2007-06-23

Another insightful tale from the talented Claude Chabrol. Audran is very good here.
What's it about? Well, the title gives you a pretty good idea. A married woman steps
out on her Hubby...and Hubby does his best to, ah, deal with it.

Won't insult your intelligence, like some films in this genre. Suspenseful.

3 out of 5 stars "A change in my way of living would be dangerous.".......2007-04-15

Claude Chabrol's film "The Unfaithful Wife" ("La Femme Infidele") centres on a married couple, Helene Desvallees (Stephane Audran) and her husband Charles (Michel Bouquet). An upper class couple, they live in a large country home with their only son, and Charles commutes to Paris daily. Charles begins to suspect that Helene is having an affair, and so he employs a private detective to investigate.

"The Unfaithful Wife" subtly hints at problems in the Desvallees' marriage, but this couple conforms to the coldest and politest behaviour at all times. Helene sprawls out invitingly on the bed, but Charles offers only a modicum of affection right before turning off the lights and rolling over to sleep. There's a problem here, but it's never addressed head-on. Instead the Desvallees maintain their normal, polite behaviour until their world is shattered beyond repair.

"The Unfaithful Wife" was remade as "Unfaithful" (directed by Adrian Lyne), and I have to say that this is one of the rare instances when I prefer the remake to the original. While the plot outline is essentially the same, "Unfaithful" in contrast is all stormy, sweaty uncontrollable passion. In Chabrol's film, Helene's affair with her paramour is almost as stilted as her marriage. Nonetheless, Chabrol fans will want to catch the film, and Stephane Audran is quite superb. In French with subtitles--displacedhuman

4 out of 5 stars The Unfaithful Wife (1969) - Claude Chabrol.......2005-10-14

The Unfaithful Wife is another film dealing with murder by the French New Wave's most mainstream talent, Claude Chabrol. What makes Chabrol different than his many contemporaries who also worked in the thriller genre is his approach towards his actor's emotions. Chabrol stays far away from exposing his characters inner thoughts, and allows more subtle actions and gestures to tell the story. The Unfaithful Wife is a prime example of how to deal with murder in the most minimalistic fashion. Chabrol isn't concerned wth visual exuberance, or artistic integrity like some of his New Wave counterparts, instead he's concerned with building characters that are meaningful to the viewer in different ways based on interpretations. Done in his most prolific period, The Unfaithful Wife is one of Chabrol's most emotionally detached, and deadpan films that works because the characters are not easy to define. The film also has a memorable ending that puts an original spin on an old plot.

4 out of 5 stars Faithfully Chabrol.......2004-08-20

Stephane Audran has a face that reminds me of Isabelle Huppert. Both women always have a game face on. We can never quite tell what's going on in their pretty little heads, but we know we should be on the look out.

Audran does this to perfection in "The Unfaithful Wife". She also did a great job in Chabrol's previous film "Les Biches".

She has such a sleek beauty to her it's easy to see why a man would fall for her and perhaps even easily to see why a man would go to the lengths her husband Charles does in this movie to keep her by his side.

Audran plays Helen Desvallees, a seemingly happily married woman who has a child, wealth, and a mother-in-law she likes (That's our first sign this is only a movie). What more could she possibily want?

Chabrol presents these people as if they are an average family. On the surface they could be your neighbors, but, the impression I got was there are a lot of secrets between this couple. There is never a scene where they actually have a conversation. It's all small talk. Do they really know each other that well?

We fairly quickly know what's really going on. Helen (Audran) is having an affair with Victor Pegala (Maurice Duchaussoy) and Charles (Michel Bouquet) finds out and trys in his own way to keep his wife.

The movie is never really suspenseful. You're never on the edge of your seat. Chabrol works in much more subtle ways. With whispers not loud bangs.

This film as many may know was remade in 2002 as 'Unfaithful'. It was diirected by Adrian Lyne and starred Richard Gere and Diane Lane. It was admirable but not as polished as this movie is. This movie clears up some of the pot-holes I thought the first one suffered from. I should also mention I saw the remake first. So don't think I bashed it simply because it was a remake. I had nothing to compare it to.

"The Unfaithful Wife" shows Chabrol at the top of his game. It was a time when he was able to churn out hit after hit and much thanks to Stephane Audran.

Bottom-line: Effective Claude Chabrol film. Has a nice setting and strong performances. Audran plays her part extremely well. Lots of choice moments here for film buffs and Chabrol fans.

Product Description

Brimming with action while incisively examining the nature of truth, Rashomon is perhaps the finest film ever to challenge perceptions of reality and justice. Through an ingenious use of camera and flashbacks, Kurosawa reveals the complexities of human nature as four people recount different versions of the story of a man's murder and the rape of his wife. Toshiro Mifune gives another commanding performance in the eloquent masterwork that revolutionized film language and introduced Japanese cinema to the world.

of looking at things, way of thinking.it's such a murder mystery that all the witnesses got different versions. it's so weird, so clueless, yet so assured and simple. but nobody could give a definite version.
you are what you are, you are what you believe, your background, social status, occupation, religious belief, superstition, hidden agenda, dark secrets in your own closet....all of these things would affect you to look at anything and everything, thus everybody got a different version or copy of interpretation or explanation. when you conclude by saying: 'gosh, it's so rashomon' in taiwan, hongkong or china, it means nobody knows what really happened, because everybody got a version of his own, and none of them could be holden as the last truth. so 'the truth shalt set you free' is actually not correct, it should be 'the truth will only burden you further.' knowing truth is not a blessing but a curse. people are being killed or murdered just because they know too much. therefore, 'the truth could get you killed' is another quite 'rashomon' saying, don't you think so? you don't? well, that's another living example of 'rashomon', man.

When confronted with the self-confident and ravishingly sexy Alex, Diana's insecurity increases. A jaded Timo seems detached in sharp contrast to the boyish excitement of Julian. But as the games begin, Timo is far from casual; Diana's initial shyness is replaced with an enthusiasm; and Julian begins to doubt the scene he has initiated. 'Swingers' is more about revelation than sex. We think we know the people we share our lives with, but can we ever really know another's inner demons or passions. Could your relationship stand the 'Swingers' test?
