The long road to Pollock began when actor Ed Harris received a biography of Jackson Pollock from his father, who noticed that his son bore an uncanny resemblance to the artist. Harris's fascination with Pollock matched his physical similarity; the actor chose to direct and star in this impressive film biography. And his devotion assured a work of singular integrity, honoring the artist's achievement in abstract expressionism while acknowledging that Pollock was a tormented, manic-depressive alcoholic whose death at 44 (in a possibly suicidal car crash) also claimed the life of an innocent woman. The film also suggests that Pollock's success was largely attributable to the devotion of his wife, artist Lee Krasner, played with matching ferocity by Marcia Gay Harden in an OscarĀ®-winning performance.

In many respects a traditional biopic, Pollock begins in 1941 when Pollock meets Krasner, who encourages him and attracts the attention of supportive critic Clement Greenberg (Jeffrey Tambor) and benefactor Peggy Guggenheim (Amy Madigan). As Pollock rises from obscurity to international acclaim, Harris brings careful balance to his portrayal of a driven creator who found peace during those brief, sober periods when art brought release from his tenacious inner demons. The film offers sympathy without sentiment, appreciation without misguided hagiography. As an acting showcase it's utterly captivating. As a compassionate but unflinching exploration of Jackson Pollock's intimate world, there's no doubt that Harris captured the essence of a man whose life was as torturous as his art was redeeming. --Jeff Shannon

Never mind purists who bemoan Margaret Rutherford's incarnation of Agatha Christie's celebrated spinster sleuth. These four British films, produced between 1961 and 64, are jolly good, regardless of their tenuous connection with Miss Marple as written, or with Christie herself. One of the films, in fact, Murder Ahoy, is an original screenplay credited as "an interpretation of Miss Marple." And two others, Murder at the Gallop and Murder Most Foul were based on books featuring Christie's other famed detective, Hercule Poirot." But no matter. The redoubtable Rutherford indelibly makes Marple her very own, or, as she proclaims to Inspector Craddock (Charles Tingwell), with whom she locks horns throughout all four films, "I am always myself." Rutherford makes a formidable first impression in Murder She Said, based on Christie's 4:50 from Paddington, in which the armchair sleuth goes undercover as a servant after witnessing a murder on a train. In Murder at the Gallop, based on After the Funeral, where there's a will, there's murder. In Murder Ahoy, Marple discovers a ship of thieves. In Murder Most Foul, Marple deadlocks a jury and joins a theatrical troupe to prove the defendant's innocence.

The Marple films are endearingly modest productions, redeemed by peerless performances and mostly sharp scripts. Ron Goodwin's theme music used in all four films is an irresistible piece of '60s symphonic pop that's a classical gas. None of the actors are suspect. Rutherford gets able support from her real-life husband, Stringer Davis, who portrays Marple's Watson-esque sidekick. Venerable character actors Robert Morley and Ron Moody enliven Gallop and Foul, respectively. And in Murder She Said, that's Joan Hickson, who would go on to acclaim as Miss Marple in the celebrated BBC series (also available on DVD). But it's tough to steal a scene from Rutherford, whose Marple displays a keen mind, and, in Ahoy, surprising prowess with a sword! --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars You've never seen Miss Marple if you haven't seen these films!.......2007-06-22

It almost seems like Miss Marple was created with Margaret Rutherford in mind, and it's a dreadful shame she didn't make more Miss Marple movies! This is a mischievous, witty, stubborn, tough Miss Marple; not a frail little old lady (looks can be deceiving!) It's an acting recital times four, and every film in the series is worth buying and watching! You'll also enjoy the catchy theme music and the fast-paced action. Margaret Rutherford doesn't just "play" Miss Marple; she becomes, and redefines Miss Marple! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Mrs. Marple--The Best Agatha Christie Adaptation Ever!.......2007-06-08

I first saw Murder Most Foul at home on cable late one Sunday night. For someone who loves murder mysteries, especially a Murder She Wrote fan, this old black/white movie was just wonderfully funny and entertaining. I was hooked on Margaret Rutherford as Mrs. Marple immediately! She's witty, stubborn, and full of spunk for an older lady and she totally matched the picture I envisioned of Mrs. Marple from reading Agatha Christie's books! Once I watched Murder Most Foul, I had to purchase the rest of the series that Margaret Rutherford starred in and I was not in any way disappointed!!! Each of the movies were well worth owning. I'm content to watch them over and over again and enjoy them everytime. If you're a mystery sleuth at heart--this collection is for YOU!!!

5 out of 5 stars agatha Christie Miss Marple by Margaret Rutherford.......2007-06-03

The Agatha Christie Miss Marple Movie Collection A great video set showcasing both the talents of Agatha Christie as a mystery writer and Margaret Rutherford as a superb actress.. She makes you feel that she is Miss Marple, even though the script does not exactly follow what Miss Christie wrote. The stars and supporting cast in the films portray there roles as both serious in the pusuit of the murderer and at the same time it strikes you as humorous and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection For Every Home.......2007-05-20

Margaret Rutherford is excellent as the curious and undaunting Miss Marple. This set is a must have for every home, perfect for watching as a late night mystery. The supporting characters are all fine actors as well, and the wonderful harpsichord music throughout the set lends much atmosphere to the stories. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5 out of 5 stars Classic mysteries without a dull moment!.......2007-05-07

I grew up watching these four movies, and have loved them all along. I have never been a fan of watching English murder mysteries such as the Ms. Marple that are seen on TV, but this collection gives us a new take on these classics and a loveable heroine as well. If you like a good mystery but want some witty laughs and characters that dont take themselves to seriously, then I highly recomment this product. My parents enjoy the Ms. Marple's of TV, and they love this different take on her as well.

Filmed in the widescreen splendor of "Panavision Super 70" and blessed with the finest production values that Hollywood clout can buy, this tale of spunky Irish immigrants forgot one crucial ingredient: a decent screenplay. The film is entertaining enough, and director Ron Howard brings his technical proficiency to the simple plot, culminating in a dynamic, breathtaking depiction of the Oklahoma land rush of 1893. But the movie is really just a vacuous vehicle for married stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as (respectively) the poor tenant farmer and rich landlord's daughter who flee Ireland to be American pioneers. The scenery and the stars are never less than stunning, but Howard falls short of the mark in his attempt to match the epic sweep of films by David Lean. On the other hand, this movie is certainly never boring even if it rarely makes sense, and Lean's own Irish epic, Ryan's Daughter, is a snoozer by comparison. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars a great historic film.......2007-04-11

I have fallen in love with this movie based on the 1893 Oklahoma Land Run. My relatives on both sides of my family were immigrants from Scotland and Germany. Both of these participated in the 1893 Oklahoma Land Run. This Land run was pivotal to the developement of what is now the state of Oklahoma. The cinematography is wonderful. The actual " Land Run" scene makes you feel the excitement that those who staked their claim on the land must have felt. A great film by Ron Howard.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-09-07

This is one of my favorite movies ever. It really captures life in the 1800's slums and you really get attached to the characters. There are parts that you can barely watch because you feel for the characters. This is a great story about people who hit rock bottom and become much stronger people by becoming tougher and working their way up again to achieve their dreams. I've seen this movie about 3 times and each time I see it, it is just as good.

4 out of 5 stars Movie review.......2005-09-21

Knowing this movie had a lot of real life to it, I paid attention to the details more. I enjoyed this movie but found it a bit much during some of the fights. The ending was fantastic.

Ex-60 Minutes producer Harry Moses made Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?, a favorite documentary film at festivals in 2006. Like an extended 60 Minutes segment, the film presents all aspects of the drama surrounding San Bernadino resident Teri Horton's ten year crusade to certify that her thrift store art purchase is an authentic Jackson Pollock painting worth $60 million. The story, hilarious because of Horton's vibrant, spitfire personality, and because of the absurd lengths she has gone to prove skeptical Pollock experts wrong, extends into a larger sociological discussion of art historical fraud. Gathering forensic evidence to battle art critics and collectors, Horton's attempt to buck the system, which requires provenance and a paper trail to qualify artwork, seems lame. Early on, for example, she claims that the painting was made in a bar at ski resort Mt. Baldy, where several movie stars were snowed in and forced to make artwork together culminating in Pollock's signing the painting with his penis. Interviewed, she explains why she's declared war on the established, discriminatory "art world." As the plot thickens, the viewer chuckles at its absurdity, but also sympathizes with this clever woman who, if anything, deserves some payment simply for her dedication to the cause. --Trinie Dalton

Description

When Teri Horton, a 73-year-old former long-haul truck driver with an eighth grade education bought a painting in a thrift shop for five dollars, she didn't know that it would pit her against the most powerful people in the art community and perhaps forever change the way art is authenticated around the world. Who The #$&% Is Jackson Pollock? is a rollicking adventure that documents a 15-year war with the art world's inner circle, lifts the veil on how art is bought and sold in America and introduces audiences to the funny, profane and utterly unforgettable Teri Horton.

5 out of 5 stars Is this documentary a fake???.......2007-06-20

....OK, I'm going to go way out on a limb here and state I think this documentary is a fake!!!I think what was made here was a "Spinal Tap" for the art world. If that is the case this "Movie" is deeper and more interesting than any documentart could ever be....think about it.

4 out of 5 stars Who the *&^( is Teri Horton?.......2007-06-18

I happened upon this documentary at the video store. As an artist, I was intrigued. I watched the entire video twice.

Teri, as the cantankerous truck-driving little woman is the perfect underdog we can really get behind in fighting the establishment. I thouroughly enjoyed this tale. If you like a good story, it's a must see.

5 out of 5 stars Trucker momma proves the emperor has no clothes!.......2007-06-17

This film just tickled me; delightfully done with a light touch, it pits a down-to-earth dumpster-diving trucker named Teri Horton against a pretentious boatload of art world snobs, and she proves (in the words of a famous author) that they don't know their scrotums from Kentucky-fried-chicken. The film stands up well as a documentary, covering a lot of ground to interview witnesses who knew Pollock, as well as forensic, art, and legal experts. Bottom line is that the fingerprint and other physical evidence pointing to the authenticity of the painting is just overwhelming; if this were a murder case, there would be more than ample evidence to send someone to the electric chair. The only thing standing between Ms. Horton and $50,000,000 (the estimated value of the painting if it were deemed authentic) is a bunch of arrogant blowholes who can't utter a single coherent or persuasive sentence in support of their position that the painting is a fake. If I ever had any doubts about the credibility of the art world, this certainly settled the issue once and for all. As for Teri, a phenomenally feisty, if complicated and self-destructive woman, she makes one of the most interesting lead characters I've encountered in fact or fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Fair and Real.......2007-06-12

I am an artist of thirty years and consider myself well-read and aware in regards to artworld issues and painting, my main form of expression. Having grown up with people who became the world's most profound art critics once they got a little alcohol in them and who regularly counseled me that what I was learning in art school was all wrong, I found this DVD quite fun. It was fair to both the experts and the philistines.

I am sure that the experts will seem quite funny to a lot of folks. Yes, it looks weird the way elderly men twist and dance in front of Teri's painting to visually test it for it's possible Pollockness. But, those feelings are ironic in the context of this story. While experts are questioned as to how they know what they know, other experts are touted as being experts, and therefore right. I suppose it is a matter of expert against expert.

This DVD has something for everyone. Beyond its entertainment value, it offers a great lesson in how artworks are authenticated. It also offers an insight into the world of people who decide what we will see in museums, a world that almost none of us has anything to do with. Finally, it's a real kick for those persons who would love to tell off artworld experts once they get a little lit. You get to watch Teri Horton do this with great verve.

Personally, I'm on the side of the artworld experts. But, you can decide for yourself. Whether you laugh more at the experts or Teri, you will get some good chuckles out of this DVD. Watch it! :-)

4 out of 5 stars Populist granny vs. art snobs - an entertaining match-up.......2007-06-11

I enjoyed this little documentary that chronicles the decade-long battle of a feisty trailer-park granny seeking to convince the "art world" that an unsigned painting she found in a thrift shop was created by legendary abstract artist Jackson Pollock. I have no idea if it really was, but it was fun watching her challenge the often-stuffy "art experts" while trying to prove that her find is the real deal. I had to wonder why the arty set was so relentless in their opposition to her claim. What would they lose if it turns out to be genuine? Also, I have to wonder why Pollock's real paintings are worth multi-millions. Sure, they're interesting, but I fail to see why they're worth that much. $25,000, sure - $25,000,000, no. Maybe the answers to these two questions are intertwined.

DangerMan set the tone, the quality and the style for everything that followed, be it Bond (which it predates "The name's Drake, John Drake", come on!) or The Man From UNCLE, Mission Impossible etc. Drake did it all first. Accepted it's dated, but still superb, stylish and adept storytelling for its time with the facilities available. The storylines are certainly more compelling than most modern day TV dramas, and the acting certainly so. Also a terrific score by Edwin Astley. This is one of the foundations of TV history. A 'must watch'.

Although I was very young when this series was first shown in the States and have no memory of watching it, I've been a Patrick McGoohan fan for many years (ever since seeing him in Disney's "The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh"). The fact that he was in Danger Man was the primary reason that I purchased it, but remarks from other reviewers regarding the fact that the hero rarely used a gun and didn't spend his time falling in and out of bed with the nearest handy female, was another HUGE selling point. I rarely watch television anymore because I'm so disgusted by the rubbish that's shown, so am always grateful when good televisions series' are brought to DVD. My family and I have watched just about the entire series and have enjoyed the episodes we've seen. Thank you so much for making this available!

5 out of 5 stars Secret Agent(aka Danger Man).......2007-05-18

In my opinion this is one of the best 1960's spy genre TV series ever made. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes european cold war era espionage alla James Bond.

5 out of 5 stars McGoohan is Drake-- JOHN Drake.......2007-05-13

Patrick McGoohan is cool as John Drake, intelligence man for N.A.T.O.
(North Atlantic Treaty Organization). A messy job, that's when they call
him. He storms out of the fluorescent-lit building, gets into a convertible sports car, and races off to the airport. In no time, he
is in a foreign country, meeting dangerous characters and fetching dolls.
He mostly uses wits and cunnning instead of violence, but can beat up
bad guys three at a time. He doesn't have time to romance the women,
except maybe after the fade-out. A tall, strong, and handsome guy,
he is British TV's thinking person's James Bond. Look for all the great
British support actors and actresses, a film-noir style, and socko
"hard-lounge" music.

This likable 1976 comedy gently skewers the whole post- Rocky mania for movies about losers who find their mettle or salvation or purpose in life in competitive sport. Walter Matthau stars as a drunk who becomes manager of a pathetic little-league baseball team. When he brings in a talented girl pitcher (Tatum O'Neal), the crew have an actual chance at winning some games and maybe a championship. But director Michael Ritchie (Downhill Racer) undercuts the romance of it all with the team's foul-mouthed tendencies and Matthau's own decadent spin on mentor-coachdom. Similarly to Ritchie's wicked comedy Smile --which lampooned the fervor surrounding beauty pageants--The Bad News Bears pokes fun at another American institution. --Tom Keogh

Thanks for delivering what was promised. Totally satisfied and great fun going back to my childhood with this great movie :)

5 out of 5 stars Its a baseball classic.......2007-03-08

My wife is not from the US and when I started talking more and more about baseball she watched this film with me. Now she understands. This is far better than the Billy Bob version. As a kid I loved this movie and as an adult I still do.

5 out of 5 stars Rather excellent.......2007-02-24

Hollywood is still churning out films like this but they don't seem to be able to capture the simplicity and charm of this very likeable classic little movie. There really is nothing to it but its a little charming gem probably long since forgotten after being done over and over again. Kicking and Screaming, another good movie, springs to mind. It is interesting to note that Jackie Earl Haley has been nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the film Little Children. I am South African and have never played baseball but this movie was a nostalgic trip back to my childhood. It is to be cherished. What is refreshing is it does not get all moralistic in the end. Enjoy and appreciate it for what it is.

5 out of 5 stars Funny as can be........2007-02-23

The Bad News Bears starring Walter Matthau and Oscar-winner Tatum O' Neal is still a delightful film after all these years. Great acting all around from the supporting cast. This movie does have a good message at the end. This movie is a classic especially for those who loved playing little league baseball when they were a kid. You can't go wrong with this family classic, get The Bad News Bears today!

5 out of 5 stars Shockingly Good.......2007-01-12

I watched this with my 12 year-old son and he immediately wanted to watch it again. 'The Bad News Bears' is an amazingly raw, unsentimental and brilliantly evocative little timepiece of a film. It's strange how a movie like this --so bursting with life and character-- seems almost like it came from another planet now. Today a film about this subject (a disastrously bad little league team turning their season and their self-esteem around) would be layered with mountains of horrible, sugary sentimental baloney and tarted up with overt sexuality. This film has none of that. It feels, instead, extremely real and also provides an amazing snapshot of American life in Southern California in the mid-seventies. It's like a kids movie made by John Cassavetes.

People over-use the term "forgotten classic" but this is it. 'The Bad News Bears' has the timelessness of baseball itself and is just as hard, raw, unforgiving and ultimately joyous.

New Zealand filmmaker Lee Tamahori (The Edge) directed this brutal but powerful story drawn from the culture of poverty and alienation enveloping contemporary Maori life. Rena Owen plays the beleaguered mother of two boys--one of whom is already in prison while the other contemplates membership in a gang--and a daughter whose potential is being smothered at home. Temuera Morrison gives an outstanding and sometimes shocking performance as the violent head of the household, more adept at keeping up his social stature within his community of friends than holding down a job. The film pulls no punches, literally and figuratively, but despite the rough going, Tamahori gives us a rare and important insight into a disenfranchised people digging down deep to find their pride. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and moving.......2007-06-29

I could watch this moving over and over again and still be very affected. The tale of this family and their issues was portrayed in a powerful way.
The two sons' and their acting out in rebellious ways was very realistic. I can't even speak on the oldest daughter's story as it makes me cry out in angst.
The abuse suffered at the father's hand and the mother's acceptance as if the norm was disturbing, yet, real... too real.
It was hard to see the father attempt to redeem his family through violence. He was so very violent and warped it was painful to watch.
The director's choice of color and Smokey filters added to the vivid imagery.
I recommend the movie to all students of film and cinematography as well as those interested in what a great screenplay looks like.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie, but very depressing.......2007-06-29

I saw this movie while in Australia visiting my wifes family. About 8 of us sat and watched a DVD version there. They had all seen it and were familar both with the movie and the problems with the Moari culture - very similar to the US American Indian reservations. When this movie was over everyone was speechless. Very well written and thought provoking movie. Do not think that this is an uplifting movie or a happy everafter movie - it is not.

This is the most powerful movie that shows domestic violence and sexual assault that I or my associates have seen. It is remarkably well done and tasteful, but very powerful. I show it to domestic violence, anger management and sexual assault clients in my practice.

5 out of 5 stars Moving but disturbing story of a urban Maori family .......2007-03-04

When I first watched Once Were Warriors I had no idea of what to except. From the jacket I knew it was drama that centered around the lives of a urban Maori family living in Aukland, New Zealand. Being that I am an American fasinated with American urban life I decided to give Once Were Warriors a try. I am gratified with the end result but also shocked by many of the depictions. Life for a Maori seems plagued with many of the ills that you find in urban areas in most metropolitan or even smaller towns and cities in America.

From my reserch I understand that Once Were Warriors was written by a Maori novelist that grew up in a neighboorhood similar in Wellington. I cannot judge on how realistic his depictions are but he definately does present a very engaging story.

The film made me feel the emotions of every single member of the Heike clan. Ultimately, I felt sympathy for all the characters including Jake. Jake was a tragic figure that was a loveable monster. Of all the characters, I felt the most sympathy for Grace who had an ambition to make it out of her surrounding a be more. I will not spoil the movie but say that what happens to Grace literally turned my stomach in disgust. Just for the initial reaction shows how power this film is and why exactly it deserves a 5 star rating.

Just a note: I would like to see more movies done about the Maori people that showcase also the indigenous culture and spirtual traditions of the Maori. Once Were Warriors was nice but I would like also some other kind of Maori films as well.

Director John Kent Harrison's imaginative film adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's 1963 A Wrinkle in Time may not be able to fully satisfy the immense expectations of those decidedly loyal to L'Engle's book, yet delivers a family thriller impressive enough to stand on its own merits. Katie Stuart plays Meg Murry, the introverted, intelligent oldest child of Dr. Jack Murry, an astrophysicist who has suddenly disappeared without a trace. As Meg struggles with her father's absence and her own coming-of-age awkwardness, she tightens her bond with Charles Wallace (David Dorfman), her brilliant, eccentric 6-year-old brother. When a trio of celestial beings summons them to find their father, the children are joined by neighbor Calvin O'Keefe (Gregory Smith) to embark on a dangerous journey of time travel. They "tesseract" onto the planet Camazotz where Dr. Murry is being held prisoner by an evil force. The film retains the essence of the novel, and deftly employs its 128-minute running time to build viewer affinity for the heroic children. The special effects will not disappoint, though the climatic last battle should have held closer to the book. Stuart is exemplary as the understated and deeply reflective Meg, while Dorfman dazzles as conflicted Charles Wallace. (Ages 8 and older) --Lynn Gibson

Description

Madeleine L'Engle's best-selling and beloved Newbery Award-winning novel bursts to life in a spectacular family film that TV Guide calls "a charming and imaginative film." Guided by Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which, the children travel to a distant planet and encounter a society controlled by an evil force. They must trust themselves and one another if they are to rescue Dr. Murry and return home safely. Enjoy the nonstop excitement and adventure of A WRINKLE IN TIME, starring Academy Award(R)-nominated actress Alfre Woodard (1984 Best Supporting Actress, CROSS CREEK) and teen idol Gregory Smith from TV's EVERWOOD. It's an amazing journey your family will want to take over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-13

My children love this movie and so do I. It is a great family movie. I think it is great for children as young as 5. When we are taking several of my daughters friends anywhere we always bring this movie along. The girls never want to get out of my SUV. We rented it from Blockbuster before buying it, but we had to have it.

4 out of 5 stars Mysticmoods' Review.......2007-03-22

I enjoyed this movie immensely. A great movie for the family.Plot was good & the actors fit their roles perfectly.I highly reccomend it.

3 out of 5 stars Passable.......2007-03-06

With all the books that have recently been made into fantastic movies (Harry Potter; The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe; The Lord of the Rings...), I was very disappointed that Disney did not give this movie the budget and attention it deserved.

There were plenty of minor changes from the book. The parents names have changed. There's some focus on Charles Wallace not liking pineapple, that didn't appear in the book. Meg is a bit of a tomboy. It's set in modern times, so you see the internet being used. All these things are forgivable; a movie interpretation will never be exactly the same as a book. However, this movie seemed to lose much of the essense of the story being told.

I thought the three children did an okay job for the roles they were given. That said, they weren't given much to work with. None of the characters are developed; I don't think the audience would feel attached to any of them, if they didn't already know them from the books.

The interpretation of the three ladies was different from the book, although not altogether bad. I enjoyed Mrs. Who's character the most. In the book, Mrs. Which was stern but encouraging; in the movie, she begins by casting the children aside. Her character became more supportive as the movie continued, at least. Mrs. Whatsit was a bit sillier than I had imagined her, and the Happy Medium was very silly and not appealing to me. For me, the silliness detracted from the intensity of the story.

The special effects were pretty terrible--and this from Disney? The tessering scenes were okay--I'm not really sure how one would visualize tessering, anyhow--but they lasted several minutes longer than they needed to. Weak special effects just shouldn't be dragged out. Mrs. Whatsit's horse-like creature was laughable. And the purpose of the big brain in the final scenes just wasn't clear. In the book, there is a large brain that is understood to be the center of control of Camazotz. In the movie, you really only see the man with the red eyes, with no explanation that there is a power greater than he at work, so the giant brain coming out at the end just seemed strange. And the cuts between scenes were a bit annoying, too. This was originally made for TV, so some of the scene transitions were meant to incorporate a commerical break. However, the attempt at creating suspense during some of these transitions came off as overdone and silly.

Finally, the music was mediocre, and at times distracting. During "suspenseful" scenes, I found myself hearing the music and thinking about how cheesy it was. Think about the fantastic movies you've seen, and the wonderful scores associated with them. This score was not one of those.

Die-hard fans who want to own everything Wrinkle will want to own this movie as well. It's not terrible. However, it's not wonderful, either. It's fairly harmless, so some children may enjoy it, if they can make sense of it, with so much of the theme being glossed over. You should definitely make sure you introduce the children to the book, as well, to cover what the movie didn't.

5 out of 5 stars Not the Book, but Worth seeing.......2006-05-05

This DVD includes a never-before-seen interview with author of the book Madeleine L'Engle and is worth the entire cost of the DVD for this reason alone.

The film itself does not "suck." It is particularly worthwhile for anyone who has not had the pleasure of reading the book, which is a masterpiece.

The film is thought-provoking and beautifully filmed--set design and editing are quite good and creatively accomplished by director, editor and screenwriter. Someday there may be another version, but this is what we have now and I therefore recommend it without qualms.

1 out of 5 stars Could Bring Back Reading.......2006-03-27

I can't believe BLT productions had anything to do with this film which is unwatchably bad. Now I see why Roy Disney made a website called Save Disney. Oddly enough, Disney did a great job on a lesser-known L'Engle book, Ring of Endless Light, which will hopefully make it out on DVD.

Who doesn't think L'Engle's time quintet (there are five books, even if it's sold as a quartet: An Acceptable Time is the fifth) deserves Harry Potter treatment? Who doesn't think these books would be great on the big screen? Supposedly, properties float around the various studios in Hollywood until someone picks them up. Look at the really bad books that get made into films. Here's one of the best properties you could find, just lying dormant.

Here's an idea; let's save Disney and (re)make it as Walt intended: a company with drive and passion, heart and soul that cares what it puts out and doesn't pass off schlock like Desperate Housewives through its ABC network or the endless man-hating shows on Deathtime. How could anyone be proud of making shows like that? What a waste of talent and money! How about some people who care about filling the vacuum for good TV and movies saying damn the torpedoes, rolling up their sleeves and getting to work? L'Engle deserves better and so do millions of viewers. If Disney keeps cranking out stuff this bad, it could bring back reading.

The film also suggests that Pollock's success was largely attributable to the devotion of his wife, artist Lee Krasner, played with matching ferocity by Marcia Gay Harden in an Oscar®-winning performance.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Depressing.......2007-05-12

The acting and direction are excellent. The trouble with this movie for me unfortunately is that it is so unremittingly depressing. I used to like Pollock's paintings. This movie portrays him as a thoroughly despicable person. In the end he is even guilty of negligent homicide--possibly murder. Now I will have to read Pollock's bio to see if this movie is an accurate representation.

There are a few things I found valuable about this movie. One is the extent to which Pollock was undermined by his intense reaction to public responses to his art. Often his worst episodes were provoked by negative remarks or indifference on the part of others.

Another interesting insight is that Pollock's art was limited. Once he's done paintings in his drip style there was really nowhere for him to go with it. This led to aesthetic stagnation and ultimately to his suicidal depression.

The movie also brought out the extent to which artists who are not independently wealthy are dependent on wealthy patrons and the extent to which artistic reputation is made by networking with critics and dealers.

These and a few other worthwhile aspects did not, for me, compensate for the pain of experiencing Pollock the movie.

4 out of 5 stars An act of love.......2007-03-29

I didn't know anything about Ed Harris' extreme efforts in getting this picture made until I read some of the reviews here. (Unfortunately I could not get the "Special Features" on my DVD to play and these contained comments by Harris.) But I immediately sensed that he must have had a deep personal involvement in the character in order to turn out such a loving film.

I'm not saying that he spares showing the dark side of Pollock or that he excuses his often wretched behavior. But the devotion he must have had to the subject matter really comes across in so many ways. I read here that he studied painting for 10 years in order to do this film. Is that true? Well, when I watched it I was amazed at how beautifully he handled the paint. I felt like I was watching a master. He is a very strong and graceful man and it seemed almost like a dance when he dripped and threw the paint on the canvases.

As others have mentioned the cast is superb, with Marcia Gay Harden matching Ed Harris' strong performance. Although I've seen her a number of films where she seemed to be Marcia Gay Harden rather than the character, here she totally melted into the personality of Lee Krasner. (I found myself being very happy to read the "Afterword" which explained that Krasner outlived Pollock for many years and managed his estate and also found the time to develop her own work. Yea! She really deserved it!)

I'm not sure why I didn't give this five stars. Maybe, as others have mentioned, it was the lack of understanding of the origins of Pollock's mental instability, especially in light of what looked like an exceptionally warm and loving family. Maybe it was the imbalance between the drunken self-destructive scenes and the good times, with the down times claiming a lot more screen time than the happy ones, that made it too grim. Maybe it was just the pain of watching this really beautiful hurting himself and others over and over.

I would have enjoyed more scenes of the interactions between the other famous artists of the time, which seemed to be a source of "juice" for him. This was an extremely important era in the history of modern art and more of that might have addd to the balance and "enjoyment" of the film.

But even with all of the darkness, I came away with a warm feeling, which I credit to the love Ed Harris had for Jackson Pollock and for making this film. It is palpable. Last, but not least, he was very generous with gorgeous shots of Pollock's paintings.

5 out of 5 stars High Biography. .......2007-02-16

Considering that it's a movie, it is tough to imagine how a more accurate and haunting picture of the disturbed artist, Jackson Pollack, could have been made. That some reviewers did not find it terribly enjoyable is merely a testament to its verisimilitude. This is Pollack and it is not a pleasant view. Nevertheless, the performances are quite spectacular. Ed Harris and Marcia Gay Harden could not possibly have been any better, and I was stunned by how closely Hollywood's Harden managed to resemble Lee Krasner. The most descriptive word for this picture is "intense." From the moment it began, with Pollack being obliterated and carried up a stairwell until to the moment it ends with a final scene that I will not ruin, this production makes for a vigorous and stimulating ride. The veracity of its depiction of the man, with devotion of the artist along with his fierce integrity figuring prominently, heightened its value immeasurably.

5 out of 5 stars ED HARRIS IS AWESOME !!!!!.......2007-01-10

This is another little publicized and known movie, from what I hear. I think it's a very real and awesome movie about the artist, Jackson Pollock. A must see !!

3 out of 5 stars Great performances in an OK movie.......2006-12-14

I thought every performance in this film, from Ed Harris and Marsh Gay Harden to Jeffery Tambor and Jennifer Connolly was excellent. Unfortunately the movie as a whole doesn't live up to their performances. I still really enjoy watching it because of my love of Pollock's work though.

5 out of 5 stars The Truth.......2007-02-17

I can't beleve you people think that on the English version Maria was not killed but arested. That is not true! When that retired policeman was telling Scarlet and Mr. Stuart his story about what happened at the ark fifty years ago, it showed him pointing a gun at Maria and when she pulled the lever, yes they did skip the scean when she was shot but after that, the guy was crying and regreting he ever shot her, he wouldn't be doing that if nothing happened to her, besides he was pointing a gun at her and telling her to get away from the lever and she disobays him what else would you have expected to happen. When he said they took her away, he ment her dead body because they were camanded to take the casualty's bodies back to Earth to have them identified and that is when Professor Garald found her name in the list of those who died when the ark was shut down. If Maria was still alive and was arested as you guys say she was, even 4kids would know that Shadow wouldn't waist his time trying to destroy the earth, he would go strait to the prison that was holding her and break her out.

5 out of 5 stars This is movie is awesome!.......2007-02-07

Man, these shows are so great together, I personally think Project Shadow should've been a full-length movie and released into theaters. Obviouslly, there's some parts that need to be edited, but there's many scenes in it, especially the end, that make it look like it should've been a full-length film and released into theaters.

4 out of 5 stars Sonic Adventure 2 Adaptation!.......2007-01-29

To start things off, let me just say that Sonic Adventure 2, or SA2, is my absolute very favorite video game. EVER. Better even than Pokemon! (For me, that is definitely saying something)

While there were still some differences between SA2 and the Sonic X adapt, I have to say I loved it. Still the same blue blur that rocked the world with a Sonic Boom 15 years ago. Amazing. 15 years, and he's still making new game-totally awesome. Despite what those so called 'profession' reviewers say, I loved the new Sonic '06 game, Sonic Heroes was immensely fun, (Who couldn't love it? Totally awesome Neo Metal Sonic claiming that he was 'the one true Sonic.') and Shadow the Hedgehog had an awesome story.

But, now for the review. The Project Shadow SA2 adapt is probably one o the deepest Sonic stories ever. Shadow the hedgehog is a Mewtwo-like character, planning to gain revenge for the death of his best and only friend-a girl named Maria.

The military, GUN, mercilessly murdered her, and now, Shadow aims for revenge! Although, in the dub (English translated version is what 'dub' means) Maria is apparently arrested. Well, thats what some people have said anyway. IMO (In My Opinion) the dub implied it well enough that Maria was shot, and not arrested (They never explicitly said she was killed, but they never say she was arrested, just taken away. Of course, that could be a metaphor, and they showed a scene with the GUN soldier with a, duh, shotgun, and Maria...eh, I won't spoil it) So, yes, Maria died.

Its very emotional, (Though not as much as the game) and very, very good. Many scenes are very good, one in particular where Knuckles hijacks a space shuttle becuase the Master Emerald flew out the window. Strange, I know xD.

There is also a very cool battle between Sonic and Shadow as well. Very fun, so don't miss it!

So, a brief and spoiler free summary of the DVD? Sure! Why not? Sonic has been framed by a mysterious black hedgehog, and is on the run form the military. Meanwhile, this same hedgehog teams up with Dr. Omele-I mean, Eggman, and Rouge the Bat. When a dangerous space station known as the ARK prepares to fire a cannon into earth, can Sonic stop it? And what does a professor named Gerald and a girl named Maria have to do with this? Why, watch and you'll see~!

Despite the editing that the dubbers did to it, its still very, very good, but the game itsdelf is the very best. If you want the absolute ultimate SA2 experience, then just go buy the game itself.

All in all, this is a very deep story and any respectable Sonic fan should watch this DVD. And as a side note, fans of SATAM never fear, for a SATAM DVD has been released! To anyone who's missed the 'way past cool' Sonic the Hedgehog Freedom Fighter, buy that DVD as well as this one.

Oh yeah, the moon gets blown up.

Until next time! Sayonara, readers!

Based on the true story of Evelyn Ryan, The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio is one of those overlooked gems that deserves a long life on DVD. Splendidly adapted by writer-director Jane Anderson from the memoir by Terry Ryan (one of Evelyn's daughters), the film operates on several endearing levels: as a revealing study of the housewife's plight during the Eisenhower era, an inspiring tale of tenacity and survival against formidable odds, and a charming family drama that tempers sentimental nostalgia with the emotional toll of harsh reality. As always, Julianne Moore brings subtle perfection to her role as Evelyn, the cheerfully strong-willed mother of ten who compensates for the failings of her alcoholic husband (Woody Harrelson) by becoming the most successful "contester" in the country, entering cleverly-worded poems, jingles, and slogans in corporate sponsored contests throughout the mid-1950s and early '60s. Winning everything from palm trees and pogo-sticks to sports cars and cash, she holds the financially desperate family together with happy smiles and a rock-solid defiance of her husband's volatile temper. Directing her first feature after a respected career in television, Anderson employs some delightful visual effects to liven up the period kitsch (in some cases allowing Moore, as narrator and actor, to appear with herself in the same scene), but she never compromises the emotional core of the drama, which yields an unexpectedly powerful payoff when surviving members of the real-life Ryan family appear, as themselves, in the film's touching final scene. Like Evelyn, this movie's a winner. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars A reconnection to the fifties.......2007-05-12

How come this film had such a limited release? It is a pure delight and the best performance Julianne More has ever given in a film of hers that I have seen. Fifties movies can be rather dour and depressing but this movie was a story of grit and laughter in the face of adversity. If you want to watch something to make you feel better about this world and the times we have lived through would really recommend it. The fact that it was based on a true story makes it even more appealing. Really worth watching!

3 out of 5 stars An Uplifting And Fun Film Featuring Abuse And Alcoholism--"Prize Winner" Tells A Great Story, But With An Uneven Tone.......2007-04-06

"The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio" is one of those films that can get me into trouble. Based on the life of Evelyn Ryan, and adapted from her daughter's memoir, the film depicts an honorable story of perseverance, positive attitude, and survival. In fact, it's such an earnest and inspirational story--one might be inclined to overlook the film's flaws. Many will! But while I admire Ryan's story, and it is genuinely fascinating, "Prize Winner" is only moderately successful as a film. A fanciful narrative, a frothy tone, and colorful visuals often seem at odds with a film that is also trying to be a biographical treatment of Ryan's life. And as Ryan's life was filled with many adversities such as abuse, alcoholism, and poverty--the lightweight tone can be somewhat unsettling in the more dramatic moments.

Julianne Moore portrays Evelyn Ryan, a mother of ten (yes, ten) children. Well, let me tell you, raising ten kids doesn't come cheap--especially when your husband has a spotty work record and an insatiable need for drink. Set during the fifties and sixties, Moore depicts Ryan as a perennially upbeat person. Ryan has a special talent that she employs to keep her family fed--she enters and wins lots of contests. Back in the day, you actually had to have skill to win these contests and Ryan had a knack for jingles and slogans. Winning many prizes (to keep and/or sell) she supported the family in this very unorthodox way. It really is a special and unusual story.

The tone of the film is so light, though. Moore often appears in scenes with herself to narrate the action, and it's a fun visual device. The whole thing plays not as realism, but as a Disney-type family fantasy film. That might work--but the film is also wrestling with some much more downbeat topics. Woody Harrelson, as Ryan's husband, often explodes in drunken rages and terrorizes Evelyn and the kids. Some of these scenes are quite unpleasant--and it's as if they are from a completely different movie. There is a lot of misery within this uplifting story, but for me the transitions were awkward. The picture never gels as a cohesive whole--so the drama ends up lacking in emotional impact. An instant after one of these attacks occurs, we're right back to a comedic tone.

I'd probably watch Julianne Moore in anything, however, and this film has a lot to recommend it. I know that the director intended to tug at my heartstrings, but the way "Prize Winner" was constructed kept me from appreciating this as a true life story of triumph. Instead, it's passably entertaining--and that is not a commentary on the real Evelyn Ryan! KGHarris, 04/07.

3 out of 5 stars Less Acquiescence, More Defiance.......2007-03-18

If you want to see Julianne Moore at the top of her game get Far From Heaven, a film where creative vision brings make-believe characters to life. While Moore is excellent in The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio, ultimately she is defeated by the emotionally manipulative "true" story and ham-fisted directing of first-timer Jane Anderson.

Moore Plays Evelyn Ryan, a housewife with an ear for language who supplements her family's income by entering jingle contests. Her flair with words is significant because the family is always broke. Amazingly, only the milkman seems to be familiar with the concept of "living within your means." Her husband quite literally drinks up the rent money, but she stays with him anyway, tolerating abuse of all types, and breeding like there's no tomorrow. Indeed, it is Evelyn's determination to single-handedly overpopulate the world, despite her self-inflicted poverty, that plays the biggest role in making her unsympathetic.

Defiance is based on a memoir by Terry Ryan, one of Evelyn's real-life daughters who came to town with an agenda. She wants us to think about - what would have happened if Evelyn had been allowed to freely express her talent? What price did Evelyn pay for tiptoeing around and enabling an alcoholic husband? In case we're not clever enough to answer these questions ourselves, she points us straight to the culprit - the 1950s. Even the least attentive viewer will "get it" when s/he watches Bert Parks and Miss America discuss why women are simply incapable of being President.

These sins are egregious, and Ms. Anderson compounds them with many scenes where Evelyn speaks directly to the camera, (a cheap, lazy expository technique.) Worse still are the MTV-esque montages of advertising art, to say nothing of the other "contesters." One of these women makes regular appearances in an iron lung; an absurdist touch so macabre that it looks like it's been imported from another movie.

Instead of feeling inspired by the grit and determination of Evelyn as she writes idiotic rhymes to promote awful products, we are left with a sense of sorrow that a person with such admirable qualities would be forced to squander them by social forces beyond her control.

4 out of 5 stars More Moore, Please.......2007-03-13

I stumbled upon The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio totally by accident. I'm a fan of Julianne Moore, though, and the opening credits looked fun, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Glad I did. Moore is, as always, wonderful in it, and it was definitely worth watching. In a nutshell, Evelyn Ryan (Moore), Catholic housewife and mother on TEN children, has a way with words. She's married to luckless, alcoholic Kelly Ryan (played pitch-perfect by Woody Harrelson), who drinks away the money he makes as a machinist in a local factory. For fun, and to help make ends meet, Evelyn participates in national contests for jingles, rhymes, and other marketing mumbo jumbo. And she's good, too. Her winnings make up the down payment on the Ryan house and also include cars, kitchen appliances, supermarket sweeps, and more. Frustrated Kelly is by turns resentful and amazed at his wife's prowess as she neatly feeds and cares for their brood. The movie is based on a true story, and for the most part, it's a feel-good family flick.

Moore and Harrelson are the true stars of the film, and I don't know which one is better. Moore's character is imminently sympathetic, maintaining a good attitude and a can-do spirit in spite of her husband's failings. In contrast, Harrelson is masterful as Kelly, a good-natured but weak man who can't seem to succeed. He is torn - his status as sole provider is consistently challenged, making him defensive. However, at heart, the viewer does feel that he loves his wife implicitly and admires (indeed, depends on) her resourcefulness.

1 out of 5 stars I wish there were brain soap..........2007-02-24

So I could wash the memory of this film from my mind. Run, no wait... get in a car, a fast car, and drive as fast as you can- ignoring all traffic signs and signals- away from this movie. It's terrible mix of pure treacle and bitter hostility. Julianne Moore plays a saint -nay- A GOD, who takes care of, I dunno, 100 kids? And she's as warm and kind and intelligent and loving and patient, etc., as any ascended being would be. Woody Harrelson plays... I don't even know. Knowing one of the kids wrote this is creepy because Woody's character, the father, is an angry, bitter drunk who is about as emotionally mature as your average 10 year old, and all the kids hate him. But then occasionally he has to come groveling for forgiveness and I think it's intended to elicit some sympathy, but it's so slapped on it seems pretty clear the author would have just preferred to damn the father altogether. Cree-py.

And that's the thing, this movie isn't even honest. Moore's character at some point says "I'm not a saint". Yeah, right! That's just bad filmmaking. This movie is nothing but the 90 minute beatification of Moore's character (with some serious damning of the father thrown in), and rather than show the character as a real person, the character has to tell us she's a real person. Show, don't tell. Every second the woman is on screen she's second only to Jesus. When she said that "saint" line I laughed out loud because it was so ridiculous.

This is a lousy movie. It's gonna appeal to anyone who loves blunt treacle, but if you're a fan of realistic characters, effective pacing and plotting, stay away.
