The innovations of the French New Wave were many, but one was the uncorking of sheer joy: joy in youth, joy in rule-breaking, joy in cinema. No film of the era is more blissful than Jacques Demy's Lola, a bittersweet ode to first loves and missed opportunities. Gorgeously photographed by Raoul Coutard (shortly after his groundbreaking work on Breathless), it's set in the atmospheric seaside town of Nantes. At the center of the interlocking storylines is a dancer (the stunning Anouk Aimée), who reunites with an ennui-burdened childhood friend (Marc Michel) but pines for the memory of a long-lost sailor. Lola points toward Demy's subsequent musical treasures, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort, which together form one of the great happy visions in all of movies: a niche between workaday reality and a fairy-tale world in which everything works out exactly as it should. --Robert Horton
Description
Anouk Aimée (A Man and a Woman) delivers a groundbreaking performance in the title role of Lola. Left by her sailor lover Michel (Jacques Harden), on the eve of her pregnancy seven years ago, Lola brings up their son while working as a dancer in a sailor's café. She anxiously awaits the return of Michel, who has gone to America to seek his fortune. In his absence, Lola spends time in the company of her childhood friend Roland (Marc Michel), and an American sailor Frankie (Alan Scott). She is a woman searching for love and would settle down with one of them if her heart did not belong to Michel… Jacques Demy's gorgeously shot B&W debut film is a loving tribute to Max Ophüls that has now been restored to radiant form under the supervision of his widow, award-winning filmmaker Agnès Varda.

Spanish for "Coming Back," Volver is a return to the all-female format of All About My Mother. Unlike Pedro Almodóvar's previous two pictures, the story revolves around a group of women in Madrid and his native La Mancha. (The cast received a collective best actress award at Cannes.) Raimunda (a zaftig Penélope Cruz) is the engine powering this heartfelt, yet humorous vehicle. When husband Paco (Antonio de la Torre) is murdered, Raimunda makes like Mildred Pierce to deflect attention away from daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo). After telling everyone the lout has left, she struggles to conceal his body. The other women in her life all have secrets of their own. Her sister, Sole (Lola Dueñas), for instance, has taken in their mother, Irene (a sprightly Carmen Maura). Since Irene perished in a fire, is this person a ghost or simply a woman who looks like her? Then there's their childhood friend, Agustina (Blanca Portillo), who is desperate to find out why her mother disappeared after the blaze. Was she responsible? Almodóvar deftly blends the ghost story with the murder mystery in his tribute to the Italian neo-realist films of the 1950s. The resilient Raimunda is a throwback to the earthy heroines of Sophia Loren and Anna Magnani. The latter appears in Luchino Visconti's Bellissima, which shows up on Sole's television one night (thus confirming the link). If Almodóvar's 16th feature lacks the emotional punch of the more audacious Talk to Her, it's less heavy-handed than Bad Education and Cruz is a revelation. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Customer Reviews:
Undoubtedly the best movie I've ever seen. .......2007-07-05
The beauty of life is magnificently captured in legendary director Pedro Almodóvar's latest international sensation, "Volver." Almodóvar is known for his quirky, fascinating and extremely moving films that appeal to all people of all cultures. "Volver" is his best film to date, and it is, without a doubt, the best movie I have ever seen in my life.
I was truly touched by "Volver." The cast is absolutely amazing; for those of you who are not of Hispanic or Spanish origin, it's important for me to stress how much of an icon both Almodóvar, Carmen Maura (Irene), Penélope Cruz (Raimunda) and Blanca Portillo (Augustina) are. This cast, and the director, are the best that Spain, and the international film scene, can offer.
The story is so moving, so adventurous, so captivating that, if I were to disclose even one small tid-bit of information about how the movie begins or how the plot develops, I would be revealing too much. You will have to trust me when I say that this is a powerful movie about the bonds that form between generations of women, women struggling with life's many trials and tribulations.
Seeing this movie released internationally has truly been an amazing experience for all people of Latin heritage, as the prowess of the Spanish film scene is finally being revealed.
If you ever had a doubt about watching "Volver," remove it from your mind, and watch "Volver" now!
Mom's under the bed.......2007-06-12
I was set on avoiding this one. I admired Almodovar's past few movies but found them fairly dreary to sit through, and this sounded like more of the same, and the "celebration of mothers" as I had heard this one was--blech! But a friend of mine wanted to see it on Christmas Day, so whatever, I thought I could sit through it. And surprise, not only did I love it, it went straight to the top of my own personal Best of 2006 list.
It's hard to describe the story, because it is so mundane and yet complicated at the same time. Penelope Cruz plays Raimunda, who has two daughters, one of whom is Paula, and a husband. At the beginning, she goes to see one of her aunts, the sister of her deceased mother. The girls don't want to see her, and certainly don't want to be close, and in these first few scenes there is a lot of comedy about the ritual of kissing both sides of the face; how uncomfortable it makes people who don't want to do it, and how ridiculous the whole thing is in the first place.
Now I have to decide whether I want to reveal crucial plot points, but you know what, I don't. I think it's a lot better for you to see it and let it unfold on your own.
Here are some observations, though. It's very well-written. There is a subplot involving Raimunda's daughter Paula that sets a lot of the action in motion, and later in the movie it is paralleled by a similar scenario that occurred in the past. One of them reflects and builds off the other. And there are a lot of parallels or contrasts like that in the script, and they all reflect and resonate with each other in a way that is very smart and literary.
It's also sweet and sentimental without being cloying. One really likes the Raimunda character from the start, even when she is imposing on friends or being a little selfish. In fact, some of the most memorable little scenes involve her asking neighbors to give them the groceries out of their refrigerators, and how willing they are to do exactly that. There's a nice, warm and moving vibe to the whole thing that only grows more affecting and emotional as the film wears on.
Cruz is a shot in such a way that is a little ludicrously glamorous [especially when she's working in a laundry or in the kitchen of a restaurant], but you forgive the movie for it because she is SO gorgeous. EVERYONE I know who has seen this movie says "Isn't Penelope Cruz gorgeous?" She is also complex and charming and delivers a wonderful performance--kind of a relief after seeing her poorly used in such things as Blow and Sahara.
There is also a variety of characters and their worries, each of which is portrayed in a sympathetic way that gives you that good, "troubles are part of what life is all about" feeling. The main action of the movie concerns a meeting that comes close to happening on several occasions, and a lot of the pleasant tension is waiting for that meeting to happen. I also like that when it finally does, and one of the characters freaks out and runs away, she soon realizes what she wants and turns back, instead of making the film waste our time while she goes home and thinks about it and calls her friends and writes in her journal or whatever a more Americanized movie might have her do.
I don't know what else to say. This, for me, was one of those movies where I was in love with it by 30 minutes in and it only kept getting better. It encompasses wonderful people and behavior and reprehensible people and behavior, but comes off with a warm and accepting vibe. I don't know, I keep finding myself stopping myself before using hideous professional-movie-critic language such as "humanistic vision," or whatnot, but this was something I was expecting to admire but be emotionally indifferent to, and I came out thinking it was one of the best things I had seen all year. If you like a movie that'll make you walk out happy, have a good and patient feeling about life, and show you a gorgeous woman [who sings a magical song, btw] you really should make an effort to get out to this.
beautiful.......2007-06-10
gorgeous film
great acting
penelope is great in the role and i love almodovar
It is the unexpected that makes the movie good ... but ...........2007-06-07
it's a dark dark film and the viewer doesn't really get to put the pieces together until the end of the film. I think if you read most of the reviews before seeing this film it will, for the most part, spoil it, since many of the reviews let the cat out of the bag.
terrific or horrific? - spoiler alert.......2007-06-01
I am amazed at the emotions that this movie has elicited from the viewers, considering the horror being portrayed. A young teenager has to kill her father in self-defense and later we learn that she is a product of incest, her mother's sister and daughter at once. Is it really a movie about love? or is it about the ordinariness of dispicable behavior and our ability not to see it when presented as a matter of fact. People, wake up from admiring Cruz's cleavage and consider what her character was through!

A love letter to movies (and the French new wave of the 1960s in particular), Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers starts with a 1968 riot outside of a Parisian movie palace then burrows into an insular love triangle. Matthew (Michael Pitt, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), an expatriate American student, bonds with a twin brother and sister, Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel), over their mutual love of film--they not only quote lines of dialogue, they act out small bits and challenge each other to name the cinematic source. Matthew suspects the twins of incest, but that doesn't stop him from falling into his own intimacies with Isabelle. As the threesome becomes threatened, Paris succumbs to student riots. The Dreamers aspires to be kinky, but the results are more decorative than decadent; nonetheless, the movie's lively energy recalls the careless and vital exuberance of Godard and Truffaut. --Bret Fetzer
Description
From Academy Award®-winning director Bernardo Bertolucci (The Last Emperor, 1987), comes an erotic tale of three young film lovers brought together by their passion for movies -- and each other. When Isabelle and Theo (Eva Green, Louis Garrel) invite Matthew (Michael Pitt) to stay with them, what begins as a casual friendship ripens into a sensual voyage of discovery and desire in which nothing is off limits and anything is possible. Featuring an engaging, seductive cast, The Dreamers is a ?spellbinding, provocative feast!" (Ebert & Roeper)

THE DREAMERS.......2007-07-01
Its tempting to try selling this film as the debut performance by the newest Bond girl Eva Green.
As an alternate, see my review, as well as this Amazon review by Bret Fetzer below mine.
Many would attempt judging this film as kinky with a sprinkling of frontal nudity and a menage a' trois scene thrown in (the NC-17) version. However, this Bernardo Bertolucci film would rather like to remembered as a love letter to the movies and to the average Parisian's intense love for good films. Using a backdrop of the 1968 student riots brought about by the firing of the director at the Cinematheque Francais - a temple for students and afficionados of art films, the story weaves into it the coming-of-age story of a bother-sister par and a young exchange student from America living together duing the heady days, and their evolving relationship.

This was an ok flick...........always good to see up and coming artists and these were fine......Eva Green should definitely do more of these types........very sexy.....sequel might do better.........
Great Movie!.......2007-05-07
If you haven't seen it you should, if you have then you're already here to buy it.
Some of the finest modern film making, subtle, sensual, insightful.
Not a fan of the last 4 minutes though.. other than that better than great till that point.
House of 'Yes' in the War Zone or The First Tango in Paris.......2007-04-26
When Bernardo Bertolucci makes a new film, I want to see it. I know it will be visually beautiful, deep and meaningful. Even when he is not completely successful - his films are difficult to forget. It applies to "The Dreamers" (2003)
In this film, Bertolucci returns to Paris of 1968. His First Tango is as shocking as Last one - it received NC-17 rating for very open scenes of nudity, masturbation, sex, and the hints to incest. But it is not just about sex - it is about film itself. It was the time when Pauline Kael said, "Bertolucci and Brando have altered the face of an art form". It was the time when a crowd in Chicago would line up under umbrellas on the sidewalk, waiting in the rain to get into the next screening of Godard's "Weekend." It was the time when movie makers became the Artists. It was the time when closing down of the famous Cinematheque Francais in Paris by the government started the student culture riots which became the part of youthful rebellion all over the Western World.
Young American, Mathew, a devoted movie buff (Michael Pitt who by the opinion of several reviewers looks like cross between Leo DiCaprio and Macaulay Culkin. I found him looking more like young Roger Ebert would've. ) becomes friends with two French students and fellow movie lovers, twins Isabella (Eva Green, in a star making debut) and Theo (Louis Garrel) and accepts their invitation to stay with them at their apartment while their intellectual parents are away for vacation.
All three are big fans of movies - they not only talk about movies, they live their favorite scenes. "The Dreamers" is Bertolucci's love letter to cinema, and his irony toward people taking it so seriously that the real world is ignored.
When Matthew moves in with the twins, the result closely resembles "Last Tango in Paris". Much of the film's second half occurs in that apartment, as insular as Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider's more than thirty years ago. Flirting becomes passion becomes dark and dangerous games to see how far someone will go. The difference is that the kids of "The Dreamers" are not as complicated and interesting as Paul or Jeanne (especially Paul, one of the greatest performances by genius Brando).
With this wistful ode to sex, cinema, and the heated atmosphere of the '60s, Bertolucci has proved that he is still on the top of his game. I will be happily waiting for his next film.

Cinderella and the Prince are destined to be together, but have you ever wondered what would have happened if the glass slipper that was left behind after the royal ball fit someone other than Cinderella? Cinderella's Stepmother and Stepsisters Anastasia and Drisella change history when Anastasia steals the Fairy Godmother's magic wand and her mother uses it to turn back time and then cast a spell on the glass slipper so that it will fit on Anastasia's foot. Customer Reviews:
Loved this movie!.......2007-06-22
I was not sure about this movie when I bought it but my 4 year old and I sat to watch it together. We both love it! The twist is very clever and is a great "what If". The chacter voices are similar to the orginial and the animation is really good. The cat still causes trouble and is just as funny as in he first movie. The Stepmother is the evil familar character that is in the first movie. I like the fact that even though there are bad people out there, it shows that they can have a change of heart. This movie is definately worth buying especially if you like the first Cinderella.
Everyone is fawning over the new sequel, as usual...*yawns*.......2007-05-19
This is about Cinderella going back in time, hence "what if the slipper didn't fit?". It "answers" a lot of questions that you didn't ask. This was an insult to the original Cinderella in short. If this were truly all that great, it would have:
1: been released in theatres by disney
2: would have made a killing in sales
3: would have TONS of toys and commercials based on it
But since it doesn't... You have to wonder, despite all the reviews, why it doesn't attract more attention than it does. This is a typical disney sequel folks, so that means that you have to sift through the reviews and use your common sense.
Amy, 10
MUCH better than I thought it would be.........2007-05-13
I rented this movie from netflix because I just love renditions of the Cinderella story. I thought that this would be something purely tacky that Disney was merely trying to make a profit on. Well, I dont doubt that they are at least trying to make a profit, but it was surpisingly better than i anticipated.
I LOVE the twist on the story in which Cinderella needs to save herself and work without magic to win the prince. It has a stronger feminist message. I also love how the ending uplifts the idea of wanting a man to love someone for who she truly is as well. It has a stronge feminist message as a result which i fully appreciate. But it does not take away any of the fun or emotional sense of magic within the underlying message.
The reason I gave it four stars is because even though I enjoy the twist on this, its really hard to beat a classic!
Fantastic!.......2007-05-11
This movie was great! Especially after the HORROR of Cinderella II, which was so bad that it was traumatic! This is the true sequel to the classic Cinderella story.
The story is interesting and moving. You really get wrapped up in Cinderella's plight as the Stepmother's level of evil goes through the roof.
Prince Charming finally gets a personality, and he is such a wonderful character! The animation and voices were so well done that I believe this could have made it in the theaters!
Even the songs were very enjoyable, though Disney sequel songs often leave a great deal to be desired.
Skip Cinderella II and go right to this movie!
Good enough for a 4 year old.......2007-05-10
This is a nice addition to any little girl's Princess video collection. Not an Academy Award winner, but certainly not as bad as some of the Disney sequels.

Product Description
When the coach of Vince Papale's beloved hometown football team hosted an unprecedented open tryout, the public consensus was that it was a waste of time--no one good enough to play professional football was going to be found this way. Certainly no one like Papale--a down-on-his-luck, 30 year-old, substitute teacher and part-time bartender who never even played college football. But against these odds, Papale made the team and soon found himself living every fan's fantasy--moving from his cheap seats in the upper deck to standing on the field as a professional football player.

Walt Disney Pictures scored a surprise box-office hit with Invincible, and the movie deserved its good reviews as a fine example of how above-average writing, direction, and casting can turn formulaic material into something special. And make no mistake, this is a formulaic movie, with its real-life story embellished with Rocky-like enthusiasm, and lovingly crafted with the same quality of working-class humanism that made The Rookie a similarly popular Disney hit. This time, the inspirational true story is that of Vince Papale, a down-on-his-luck substitute teacher in Philadelphia (played by Mark Wahlberg in a nicely understated performance) who was 30 years old, out of work, abandoned by his wife, and biding time as a bartender when he answered an open call for tryouts on the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team in 1976. Going with his gut instinct, new coach Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear) rewards Papale's diligent efforts with a place on the team, and Invincible combines gridiron guts, low-key romance (as Papale meets his future wife-to-be, played by Elizabeth Banks) and blue-collar friendship in an underdog story that moves, with casual charm and abundant appeal, toward a rousing feel-good finish. Making good use of digital visual effects to recreate Philly's now-demolished Veterans Stadium, director Erickson Core (also serving as his own cinematographer) tackles this heartwarming assignment with intelligence and flair, spinning gold from what could have been just another routine sports movie. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Great family fare.......2007-06-22
This is a wonderful film that the entire family can enjoy (without watching a cartoon). It has the further benefit of being based on a real person's life and experience. In some ways it is Dick Vermeil's story as well as Vince Papale's. Both are embarking on long-shot careers. The fact that we know how Vermeil's will turn out provides reassurance that Vince's will turn out well also. A sweet and engaging film about individual aspiration, family, neighborhood, and friendship. Watch it with your kids without any fear of embarrassment. How often can you say that today?
a real good movie.......2007-05-14
this is very serious and true movie. i really enjoyed it.
Love this movie.......2007-04-11
This movie will really touch your heart. The scenery, the acting, and the music are all on point. What a great story!
Better than the usual sports saga.......2007-04-02
"Invincible" is a cut above the usual "downtrodden young man achieves the impossible" sports saga. It's the true story of a Philadelphia Eagles fan who responds to the coach's publicity stunt of holding tryouts for his beleagured team. No one expects anything to come of it, but Vince proves to be incredibly fast on his feet, and makes the first cut--and the second, and the third, and eventually the team. He's ostracized by regular team members, and even by some of his buddies back in the neighborhood, who fear they'll lose him to the big time. In his first big play, he blows it--but then makes an incredible play in a later game that wins it for the Eagles. My husband says Vince played for 3 years on Philadelphia's special teams.
This movie paints a real life gritty picture of working class Philadelphia, almost like the first Rocky film. Very suitable for kids without being sappy sweet--my 8 year old grandson thought it was great. Highly recommended.
A feel good movie.......2007-03-31
This movie was well done, it builds the problem (a depressed era) and a lack of confidence and shows how one man handles that struggle with the help of his friends and family. A must watch and one that I would recommend purchasing. Then do a look up on Wikpedia to learn more about the man.

Screenwriters rarely develop a distinctive voice that can be recognized from movie to movie, but the ornate imagination of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) has made him a unique and much-needed cinematic presence. In Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a guy decides to have the memories of his ex-girlfriend erased after she's had him erased from her own memory--but midway through the procedure, he changes his mind and struggles to hang on to their experiences together. In other hands, the premise of memory-erasing would become a trashy science-fiction thriller; Kaufman, along with director Michel Gondry, spins this idea into a funny, sad, structurally complex, and simply enthralling love story that juggles morality, identity, and heartbreak with confident skill. The entire cast--Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, and more--give superb performances, carefully pitched so that cleverness never trumps feeling. A great movie. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
One of the most original films in recent years, a truly mesmerizing accomplishment..........2007-06-26
Very rarely does a film come around that is so utterly flawless I have absolutely nothing negative to say in its behalf. `Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' is that movie. From start to finish, from its script to its cast to its brilliant direction, `Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' is fantastic, engaging, entertaining and most of all genuinely refreshing, unique and completely original and that is a facet of film that is very rarely attached to a motion picture. All to often the same concept is revisited time and time again with different actors but the same story is being told, and while the underlining moral behind this film, of the haste in action and the reversal of consequence, I can't say has never been broached I can honestly say it's never been exploited with such sheer brilliance and most likely never will again.
The film tells the story of Joel, played by Jim Carrey in his finest performance to date, a man who falls in love with a woman any man would be lucky to find. Clementine is funny, spunky and sincere, nothing like anyone Joel or maybe even the movie going public has ever met and immediately he is absorbed and content in her light. Everything is going perfect, going as expected. They love, they fight, they live and they repeat. They have a normal, healthy relationship until one day when Clementine doesn't remember Joel. Joel soon finds that Clementine had a procedure done to erase him from her memory and so in haste he decides to do the same only to realize partway through the process that his best memories are of her. He struggles to save her, hide her away in the corners of his mind and his fight is so remarkable and heartbreaking to watch.
Director Michel Gondry is a masterclass of a director, and here he is so remarkably in tune with his characters and their surroundings that every scene jumps from the screen and into our skin. Every scene, every prop is a perfect compliment to the actors and dialog and chemistry that just illuminates and oozes forth with utter satisfaction. The cast is also at the top of their game. As I mentioned Carrey himself gives us the best performance of his career breathing so much maturity coupled with adult naivety into Joel that he becomes the man we know or perhaps even are. Winslet though is a revelation as Clementine giving one of if not the best individual performance of the past decade. Her character is not an easy character to create let alone master yet she effortlessly becomes Clementine and thus we become enthralled in every scene she accompanies. The mere fact that Kate Winslet is nothing more than `Oscar Nominated' infuriates me to no end, but that is for another discussion.
The supporting cast of talented actors is flawless. Kirsten Dunst is charming and fun and Mark Ruffalo is brilliant as always. Even Elijah Wood, an actor I've never really felt owned it, surprised me and put in a great performance despite its lack of length. Plus, any movie with the great Tom Wilkinson is worth its weight in gold, and the subplot involving his infidelitious doctor is a great asset to the film.
`Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' dissects the most common of problems, human relationships, and does so with such grace and candor that the audience is involved and invested in every second of running time. It beautifully captures the very real feelings of pain, abandonment and despair and the very childish ways that we as adults so often deal with those feelings and then of course the negative affect they have and our humane struggle to correct the problem before we're forced to live with it. Charlie Kaufman's script is perfect, not a flaw in sight, and the casting of Winslet and Carrey in the leads was genius. Neither of these actors, despite their rich resume, has ever accomplished what they have with this film as far as depth and richness of character. `Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' may have been snubbed the Oscar for Best Picture, heck, it wasn't even nominated, but it proved to me to be the best picture of that said year and maybe even of many years that precede and proceed.
My All-Time Favorite Movie.......2007-06-24
Words cannot sum up my love for this movie. It's unique, quirky, funny, romantic, sad, and simply fascinating.
One of the movie's masterstrokes was the way that time was handled. If you don't already know, Joel (Jim Carrey) decides to have the memory of his ex-girlfriend (Clementine - Kate Winslet) erased after she did the same to him. Most of the movie takes place in his memories as they are being erased. However, the memories are erased in reverse-chronological order. So it starts with these very negative memories about their breakup which only confirm the need for the operation. Then, as he travels back in time through more positive memories, he realizes how much he still loves her and he changes his mind about the operation. Of course, since he's asleep, he has trouble figuring out a way to do that. If the movie had shown their relationship go from good to bad, then it would not have been near as touching. Here we get to see that no matter how bad things seem, there are always good memories and the love is still inside somewhere. Both hopelessness and the feeling of love build up concurrently making the film a very intense emotional experience. The last memories (chronologically the first) were unbelievably touching.
Another thing that made this film great was the dialogue. In modern films, it is rare to see dialogue so eloquent. If you like classic movies, then this may be your film. The dialogue was one of the reasons that the scene in the beachhouse moved me so much.
The music needs mention too. The soundtrack is amazing and very emotional. My favorites are the song played during the opening and closing credits and the song that was played backwards (fitting, huh?) before, during, and after the beachhouse scene.
If you haven't seen this movie, do so immediately. It is so unique and very touching. It also has some nice comedic moments although the film is more of a "Twilight Zone" romance than a comedy. Being an image-conscious male, the number of movies that made me cry I can count on one hand. This one is the pinky.
A True Gem!.......2007-05-29
Everytime I watch this film it never gets old. Amazing acting across the board. I cannot recommend this film enough. Just make sure to see this.
Could this mark a new direction for romantic comedies?.......2007-05-29
A romantic comedy that breaks away from the tired formula. Its worthwhile and I enjoyed it. The only thing I didn't like was the scenes inside the apartment of Stan (Mark Ruffalo) and Mary (Kirsten Dunst) goofing off while Joel (Jim Carrey) lies unconcious on the bed - jumping around half naked on the bed and so forth. It felt forced. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet give great performances while the others aren't on the same level.
Wow! What a Pleasant Surprise!.......2007-05-28
If you've ever wanted to forget something painful or wanted to never forget something precious...this movie will strike a cord in you.
I was watching this movie for pure entertainment, I admit. I was killing time. I knew it was different. I had no real expectations going into it. But the story line is compelling and thought provoking. And suddenly entertainment becomes so much more.
I wish more movies were this way. I love an open ended story that allows the audience to bring themselves into it. And forget the fluff and cookie cutter approach to traditional romances today. This movie brings in the reality of relationships and all the pain and insecurity that can come with them. It's an honest look at people. Jim & Kate's relationship isn't what I would call exemplary or a good model, but I still totally got into their connection with each other.
Yes, I really enjoyed this movie. In an age where time is precious, watching this movie is a very good use of it. Use your grey matter, people! Watch this movie and THINK!

Amazon.com essential video
It's difficult to create a film that's fast paced, exciting, and aesthetically appealing without diluting its dialogue. Run Lola Run, directed and written by Tom Tykwer, is an enchanting balance of pace and narrative, creating a universal parable that leaps over cultural barriers. This is the story of young Lola (Franka Potente) and her boyfriend Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu). In the space of 20 minutes, they must come up with 100,000 deutsche marks to pay back a seedy gangster, who will be less than forgiving when he finds out that Manni incompetently lost his cash to an opportunistic vagrant. Lola, confronted with one obstacle after another, rides an emotional roller coaster in her high-speed efforts to help the hapless Manni--attempting to extract the cash first from her double-dealing father (appropriately a bank manager), and then by any means necessary. From this point nothing goes right for either protagonist, but just when you think you've figured out the movie, the director introduces a series of brilliant existential twists that boggle the mind. Tykwer uses rapid camera movements and innovative pauses to explore the theme of cause and effect. Accompanied by a pulse-pounding soundtrack, we follow Lola through every turn and every heartbreak as she and Manni rush forward on a collision course with fate. There were a variety of original and intelligent films released in 1999, but perhaps none were as witty and clever as this little gem--one of the best foreign films of the year. --Jeremy Storey
Customer Reviews:
intense, fast paced, a mind flip .......2007-07-02
What a great movie? I've loved it since the first time I saw it... eight years ago or so. The sound track gets repepetitive at times .. but it's still a wonderful film.
How did this poorly acted and directed movie get 4.5 stars?.......2007-03-23
Since I'm not a customer here I'm using this kid's forum. I'm not a kid by the way.
Anyways, I don't get why this movie is so highly regarded. It was just the most annoying movie I've ever seen. Basically it's the same story about retrieving a lost bag of money repeated three times. It's not like we needed to see shots of Lola running all the time. There are too many crazy cuts between events that don't seem to make much sense. Also, what's with all those cuts when Lola runs past or bumps into any bystander on the streets? How can she have any insight into the pasts of these people and seriously why do we need to know about them? They're not essential to the story. One more thing is why does Lola scream like such a maniac and why does it shatter glass? These are all just failed attempts to make a good arthouse film. It's a poorly acted and directed film unworthy of the praise it gets.
6 Stars Out of 5! The Most Creative and Brilliant Movie Since Godard's Breathless in 1960.......2007-03-23
There are very few films that become instant cult classics such as Godard's 1960 Breathless and the less-than-brilliant Pulp Fiction by Tarantino. Run Lola Run in many aspects tops both these movies in its ability to take an incredibly simple plot and turn it into an exgtravaganza of motion, sound and film-making showmanship that redefines filmography and becomes a genre of its own.
Run Lola Run is a brilliant combination of a very talented cast, extremely creative writing and masterful video and sound editing, which results in one of the greatest masterpieces in modern moviemaking history. I am not getting carried away!
Although the movie is sparse with words, it does an incredible job at providing a unique perspective into the characters lives, sometimes with a single sentence or even just a sequence of camera snapshots:
Lola's mother's only sentence in the movie while holding a glass of wine at home: "clearly, I knew your ascendant was Sagittarius.... But you are married too".
Lola's relationship with her father:
Lola: "if I can't get the money, Manni will die".
Father: "Who is Manni?"
Lola: "My boyfriend for a year now".
We also get a glimpse into random characters' lives through a sequence of camera snapshots, sometimes in a humorous way, all interweaving into the main theme which is the stage and play that we're all part of and how sequences of events change the outcome of the end of the play.
Along the plot line there are several humorous winks and tributes to other movies and books which arguably provided some inspiration to parts of the movie. For instance, Lola's ability to shatter glass with her voice is a direct tribute to German author Gunter Grass's The Tin Drum. A silent scene at the casino provides a tribute to Apocalypse Now. The 3 tries plot may have been inspired by Fritz Lang's 1922 Der Mude Tod, etc.
Regardless if you recognize these tributes, Run Lola Run is a captivating movie where every frame and every note of sound seem to be perfectly orchestrated by a maestro who is conducting this fast paced, brilliant symphony.
Film making at its best! Savor it!
Lola's Running .......2007-03-09
I thought this product was awsome, a classic, cheaply priced, and I recieved item way before the delivery date. Recommend buying movies from this seller. This movie was creative (although it was in subtitles), and equally unique from any of the other movies I found over the internet.
Lola runs well.......2007-03-09
Most of the movies I buy from Amazon are sale priced gems I've seen already. They're additions to a burgeoning home library. As I add additions I screen them to make sure the DVD plays properly. In this instance I screened the movie for co-workers during lunch and dinner breaks. "Lola" was well received by those who had not seen it before. I think it's a terrific example of an alternative (foreign or otherwise) to mega budget (or even mid to low budget fodder) movies especially those with huge stars, and an over abundance of special effects, which play as if they were written for and by marketing robots.

Charlie and Lola, Vol. 1
Charlie and his spirited little sister Lola are the best of friends and, like most siblings, the pair must employ a little ingenuity and a whole lot of creativity to maintain a healthy sibling relationship while conquering their individual problems and fears. When Charlie's Mum solicits Charlie's help getting Lola to eat her dinner in "I Will Not Ever Never Eat a Tomato," Charlie must call on his creativity to convince his extremely picky sister to eat her peas, potatoes, fish fingers and tomatoes. Lola gets a chance to see what being responsible for a dog is like in "We Do Promise Honestly We Can Look After Your Dog" and Charlie joins forces with Lola's invisible playmate Soren Lorenson to help Lola conquer her separation anxiety in "I Love Going To Granny and Grandpa's It's Just That. . . . " Other predicaments visited include keeping a secret, being sick in bed with a cold, a fear of spiders, and cooperative play. Based on the Charlie and Lola books by Lauren Child, this 84-minute compilation of BBC programs features simple images, universal themes, a delightful smattering of British pronunciations and colloquialisms, and bonus features that include English subtitles, an interactive jigsaw puzzle, outtakes, and several hidden video snippets. (Ages 2 to 7) --Tami Horiuchi
Charlie and Lola, Vol. 2
Charlie's little sister Lola is "very small and very funny," with an infectious laugh and a young child's tendency toward intense enthusiasm and emotions. In this second volume of Charlie and Lola episodes from the BBC, the ever responsible Charlie helps his sister through the difficulties of everything from bedtime rituals to delayed gratification and disappointment. A wide awake Lola possesses a seemingly inexhaustible arsenal of excuses why she simply can't go to bed in "I Am Not Sleepy and I Will Not Go to Bed," but a patient and creative Charlie creates a bedtime routine that celebrates Lola's imagination AND gets her to bed with a relative minimum of fuss. Dealing with disappointment is especially difficult for Lola, but Charlie always seems to have an innovative remedy like unearthing just the right book to check out from the library when Lola's favorite book is already checked out, good advice about the perfect birthday gift for a friend, and a creative way to salvage a picnic that's been ruined by a rainstorm. In "I Want to Play Music Too," it's Lola that ends up teaching Charlie a lesson about the value of collaboration and creativity in music when she rescues a flailing Charlie during a school musical performance. Anglophiles, fans of Lauren Child's Charlie and Lola books, and children ages 2 to 7 will delight in these six escapades featuring the spunky Lola and her clever brother Charlie. Bonus features include an interactive hide and seek game, funny outtakes, and hidden surprises. --Tami Horiuchi

Good Family Laugh.......2007-07-03
The kids and I enjoy Charlie and Lola so much. I love that they are only 15 minutes each too. They are so fun to laugh with! My brothers who don't have children yet don't really enjoy them, I think it is a requirement to be on the same level with small children to really enjoy the humor.
Excellent, clean, and wholesome entertainment for children........2007-07-03
This was the beginning of a wonderful set of children's cartoons. It will teach children how to play and use their imaginations while keeping them entertained. It will also teach them a good sense of family. I love how the big brother is so doting towards Lola.
Wonderful stories, fabulous role models.......2007-05-24
I'm a huge fan of the show, and I love the patience and caring Charlie portrays while living with Lola. My children are several years apart in age and C/L make wonderful role models for treating each other with respect and using kind words when your feelings are hurt or you are disappointed. I keep these DVDs in the van; they are just the right length to occupy my little guy for a short trip to the market or while in a school pick-up line (especially in foul weather). Both children love the show and I've seen them acting out episodes on the playground.
Charlie and Lola.......2007-05-14
This show has revolutionalized my ideas about TV for kids. I think it's brilliant: natural, educational, warm, emotional, witty and clever. Plus - and it's a big plus - i think it's fun for adults too.
A great choice for preschoolers.......2007-04-01
My 3.5-year-old dghter and I love watching the Charlie and Lola sketches. They are charming and funny. What I like is that the stories all have a point that is made with lots of imagination (and not belabored) AND the children sound geniune, unlike some other shows where they sound artificial and forced (like Caillou). What my daughter likes are the stories and humor--she is quoting lines from this all the time.

Stanley Kramer's 1959 antiwar movie looks like everything Kramer did: subtle as a car wreck but undeniably affecting. Gregory Peck plays a submarine commander looking for survivors in Australia after a nuclear holocaust. Ava Gardner is among them and, somewhat improbably under the circumstances, becomes his love interest. Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins are among the characters awaiting death from the gradual spread of radiation from the north. One might scoff at Kramer's implicit finger-wagging about nuclear politics in this mad, mad, mad, mad world, but it is hard to stop watching this compelling drama all the same. --Tom Keogh
Description
The war is over. Nobody won. Only the inhabitants of Australia and the men of the US submarine Sawfish have escaped the nuclear destruction and radiation. Captain Dwight Towers (Gregory Peck) takes the Sawfish on a mission to see if an approaching radiation cloud has weakened, but returns with grim news: the cloud is lethal. With the days and hours dwindling, each person confronts the grim situation in his or her own way. One (Fred Astaire) realizes a lifetime Grand Prix ambition, another (Ava Gardner) reaches out for a chance at love. The final chapter of human history is coming to a close... From acclaimed director Stanley Kramer (The Defiant Ones, Inheritthe Wind) and screenwriter John Paxton comes this spectacular movie landmarka film masterpiece with a message that will resonate as long as the world has the power to self-destruct at its own fingertips.

A Cold War Classic.......2007-05-20
On the Beach is truly an excellent Cold War Classic - I think this is
a movie everyone should see at least once. Fine acting by the best of
actors for its time. Get a copy for yourself and get a viewing audience
to watch it too.
On the Beach, the original........2007-05-12
This is one of the best cold war, end of the world, somebody dropped the bomb movies ever. Very thought provoking, especially if you live thru that era.
Still Relevant.......2007-04-16
This movie was science fiction. Absolutely.
But, seeing this movie again reminded me that the ideas in this movie are something we should still be thinking about.
A great premise that drowns in monotonous levels of mediocrity.......2007-02-15
When I read the synopsis of this 1959 film starring Gregory Peck, I had to get it. I had never heard of the film before, or the book that it is based on. The whole premise of a film coming up with an "alternative" history in a post apocalyptic setting back then intrigued me. Considering the scare of nuclear war and the consequences of radioactive fallout, I can see how this film at the time of its release, was perhaps more fearfully felt than enjoyed as a fictional tale. Considering it had one of my favorite actors from that era cast as the main star, I figured I couldn't go wrong. I was almost expecting a sort of Twilight Zone kind of setting, with the producers able to take this "what if" scenario and have a full reign on endless theories and imaginative portrayals.
The premise of the film is centered on an earth in which the typical "nuke shootout" has occurred in the year 1964. Gregory Peck stars as Dwight Towers, commander of a U.S. Submarine that has escaped the nuclear holocaust and eventually finds its way to what seems like a safe and inhabited area in Australia. Towers and his crew work with the people there in trying to establish communication with the outside world, although at this point it seems futile; The fallout will soon be upon this last resort on Earth. Towers sets out again to search for other areas and particularly has his eyes set on heading to San Francisco, where there are some strange transmissions being relayed that may be signs of life after all.
The plot and premise of this film are great, but I felt that overall it dragged on way too much. The first forty-five minutes seemed to take forever, and it wasn't until they were on the mission in the San Francisco bay that I really felt any "peril" for anyone in the movie. Much of this comes from the fact that none of the characters in the first hour seem to act like anything is wrong. They talk about the bombs and the outcome, and the possibility of death knocking at their door like they are visiting about some football game from a day before. The sailors portrayed, with the exception of a few, mostly just sit around looking like slackers. The "setup" of the film just never was strong enough for me to feel that it was an "End of World" type scenario.
A shining light in this film is Fred Astaire. Fred plays Julian Osbourne, a nuclear scientist who despite feeling the guilt of having a hand in one of mankind's deadliest inventions, gets to live out a dream of racing in a grand event. His speech on the sub about the irony of war, peace, and how the most noble of thoughts can lead to the deadliest of actions was spot on. It was a rather timeless and truthful look at things that doesn't sound dated at all. Ava Gardner plays Moira, a possible love interest for Towers, but even her and Anthony Perkins roles in this film seemed to slow, and by the time any emotion or feelings are shown, it just doesn't come across as realistic.
Not terrible, and some hail it a great classic. As I said, the plot and its outlying ideas are there, and some of the scenes of a dead San Francisco add to the charm of this film's portrayal of mankind's "final days", but with so much of the dialogue void of strength and emotion and a finality that takes what seems like an eternity to reach, it just isn't as good as it could have been. Overall it is not the story, but the disjointed way it is told that is an issue. I've seen Gregory Peck in a multitude of films and I must say that his character in this one didn't do HIM justice.
On the Rocks .......2007-02-02
Nothing is worse than Hollywood when it preaches. You half expect Al Gore to make a cameo appearance, wailing hysterically about "climate change". But I guess in 1959, he was sitting on his mom's lap, singing "Look for the Union Label." It's a shame to see so much talent go up in politically correct smoke.

Top Notch.......2007-07-05
My granddaughter absolutely loves Charlie and Lola, so I watch a lot of Charlie and Lola with her. The stories are actually quite good, the characters are very likable, and any friend of my granddaughter is a friend of mine.
Excellent, wholsome, and clean entertainment for children........2007-07-03
I don't think there are many children's shows on television that are this wonderful. I hope they keep these coming. Lola is exceptionally funny and very much like a small happy child.
CHARLIE AND LOLA.......2007-06-27
I love this show for my daughter... This DVD is cute and funny for children of all ages.. My only problem was there wasnt as many shows on the dvd as my daughter would have liked... :o)
Always a hit with the entire family!.......2007-06-27
If you've never read or watched "Charlie and Lola", you've been missing out! This adorable British brother and his little sister never fail to entertain while teaching valuable life lessons. My soon-to-be four year old daughter danced around with delight when she opened the package to find her "favorite and her best", Charlie and Lola! (Our ten year old and eight year old are big fans as well!) We watch the videos, read the books and listen to the music while riding in the car! I promise you'll become a fan too!
Another cute Charlie and Lola volume!.......2007-06-11
We love to watch the episodes on this volume. And when I say "we," I mean it. I enjoy watching it with my girls (4 and 6) because they are constantly giggling as the animation and storyline are very entertaining for them.

Customer Reviews:
Minnelli did make a few "bombs" during his MGM period and this was one of them........2007-05-01
Yolanda and the Thief and Brigadoon were 2 others! He made Gene Kelly look sexier than his wife did in this one!
Nonsense but still worth to watch!.......2006-07-06
Music is by Cole Porter, directed by Vincente Minnelli, and staring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. That sounds like promised musical to be impressed. However it didn't seem to get the result as expected.
The story is not typical musical stuff but pirate theme has been picked in Hollywood since silent movies era. The stage is an exotic island and there is a dreamed girl, Manuela (Judy Garland) who has been in love the famous pirate, Macoco, she never met anyway. She engaged with a rich man and a new mayer, Don Pedro. She wanted adventure but she knew it could not be possible. She is just a girl who is supposed to follow men or elder people. She meets an actor, Serafin (Gene Kelly). Serafin falls in love with Manuela. Manuela refuses him but also somehow attracted by him. She goes out to see his show and she is hypnotized there. Then she confesses she is in love with Macoco then she expresses her all passion to Macoco by singing and dancing "Mack the Black". After she waked up from hupnosis, she ran away to go home. Serafin followed her place and pushes his love to her. He tries to fight her fiancé, Don Pedrao, then he finds out his real identity. Serafin announces he is Macoco and he takes Manuela as a reward. Manuela believes first but she finds out it is fake at his place. Don Pedrao called police to catch Serafin. Serafin tried to explain that is joke but Don Pedrao made up the evidence then he is caught. He is going to be executed, Manuela, now she is sure to love him, tries to stop the execution....
Although the story is nonsense but it is worth to see some scene, such as Judy Garland's singing "Mack the Black", Gene Kelly's dancing "Be a Crown" with The Nicholas Brothers, and Judy and Gene's "Be a Crown" at the last. And Judy's acting is also worth to see.
I'm the only one who didn't care for it........2006-06-02
Gene Kelly was very good in it, and it did have one very good musical number with Kelly, that I saved, after I recorded it from Turner Classic Movies.
I saw it all, but erased the rest. I kept thinking, "Did people actually pay to go in to see this weak movie, in 1948?"
But everybody else loves it, so what do I know?
The Pirate Should Be On DVD!.......2005-08-23
The Pirate starring Judy Garland and Gene Kelly is a wonderful musical and the singing and dancing by the two leads is excellent and I wonder why this movie hasn't been put on DVD yet and I think it's about time it got the DVD treatment! I have this movie on video but the tape is in really bad condition with several scenes that are so worn out they are unwatchable so a DVD would be very appreciated!
Pirate's Brilliance Stolen by Critics and Skeptics.......2005-06-14
After reading more than 20 A+ reviews of this 56-year-old film, I wonder why WB Home Video is taking so long to bring it to DVD. They have released a bevy of inferior MGM musicals, but the best of the best is still on their wait list. I have a tape copied off TCM, but I long for the crisp beauty and color of a DVD version of this masterpiece. I just celebrated my 70th birthday. Wonder if I'll live to own the DVD.
