Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
If it hadn't been released in 1998 with a veteran cast of Hollywood's finest, you could swear that Twilight was a movie from the 1940s--the kind of intelligent mystery that would've made Humphrey Bogart feel right at home. To be sure, that was exactly the intention of director and co-writer Robert Benton (in collaboration with Nobody's Fool writer Richard Russo), but the film's blessing is also its curse. Benton and Russo are so enamored of vintage mystery plots and characters that their movie nearly succumbs to the burden of old-fashioned familiarity. As the title suggests, the movie's aging characters, led by Newman as a private eye who's almost literally on his last legs, are all on the downhill of life, their Hollywood glory days behind them. Newman's character lives in the luxury home of two fading stars (Gene Hackman, Susan Sarandon) who may or may not be connected to a murder plot that also involves one of Newman's old colleagues (James Garner). Whether they're literally in their final days (as in the case of Hackman's character) or just grasping for some comfort in their twilight years, these characters interact with the kind of worldly, intelligent dialogue that was common in the better movies of Hollywood's past. But while Twilight gives Newman yet another role to fit into like a favored old suit, the movie's so low-key that some viewers may find it hard to sit through. That's a shame, because the bombastic, frenetically paced films that dominated the 1990s may have diminished our collective capacity to appreciate the solid, character-driven movie tradition that Twilight attempts to revive. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Timeless! My favorite TV show.......2007-07-05

Finally got this in the mail a couple days ago. At Amazon's price of $169 it was a steal! Was tempted to buy it around Christmastime when it was $180 (still a steal) but I put it off.

The good: superb video & audio transfer of material almost fifty years old...much better than what's presented on late night cable reruns. The quality of the actual content goes without saying as this contains some of the most memorable stories ever written with high production values for a TV show. It's amazing how the original series doesn't appear as dated as Night Gallery or even the 80's Twilight Zone.

What I love most about this set are Rod Serling's informative audio lectures at Sherwood Oaks College which are included for many episodes. Just by listening to these Q&A discussions you get a sense of how much of a perfectionist Serling was, his knack for storytelling, and the high standard he put upon himself when you hear him critique and sometimes bash his own episodes. His lively, open-minded interaction with the audience makes him seem like a pretty cool dude.

Now for the bad:
A couple nitpicks are that not all episodes have special features & the DVD menus aren't as streamlined as they could be. But by far THE SINGLE MOST ANNOYING FEATURE are Zicree's audio interviews included with certain episodes. Marc Zicree (author of the Twilight Zone Companion) is perhaps the most annoying interviewer EVER because of his bad habit of constantly talking over his interviewees by uttering "mmm-hmm", "hmmmph", "huh", every three seconds or so! It's the most awkward thing you'll ever hear. The first time I noticed this was for the episode "Time Enough At Last" and I just wanted to yell at Zicree saying, "STFU and let Burgess Meredith talk you friggin Twilight Zone dork!!!". Zicree's audio interviews are simply unlistenable.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2007-06-19

This is surely the best transfer of a 1960's television programme ever made. Even if you are only a sometime fan of the series these 156 episodes have been lovingly transferred from original masters. With the extras this must be the best box set of a television series on DVD. Forget that the price may be daunting, enjoy it for its content (controversial in its day) and Serling's attention to detail.

5 out of 5 stars These are wonderful!.......2007-06-01

As a lifetime TZ fan, I thought I had seen every episode. Not so! I am amazed at how many I had never seen and what a great job they did with this at this time in television history. The writing and acting are fabulous and the stories provoke imagination and thought. These will be enjoyed by the family for many years.

5 out of 5 stars In the Zone.......2007-05-15

I have been a twilight zone fan since I was a kid. Through the years I collected several episodes on DVD but was never able to find the episodes I really loved and missed. When I saw the complete collection of episodes on amazon I knew I had to buy them no matter how much they cost. I have been watching and rewatching my favorite episodes since and enjoying new ones that I have never seen before. Thanks for the great package.

5 out of 5 stars The Whole Story.......2007-05-15

Well, if you are a TZ fan like I am, this is a must purchase. You won't need anything else because this package has it all. Every episode from the entire five year run of the series in the early 60's. Even though most fans have seen these episodes many times, it is great to have each and every episode at your fingertips to view whenever you want. I especially enjoy watching the acting, seeing todays actors in their early roles on TV, some of whom made it big and others who you never heard from again. This package is worth every cent.

3 out of 5 stars Review of The Twilight Zone: Vol. 2.......2006-03-20

I ordered this particular volume to augment, with video, a story in the literature book from which I teach my students. I knew what to expect from the DVD and was not disappointed. It did arrive sooner than I expected which was a pleasent surprise.

5 out of 5 stars You are traveling through another dimension..........2005-12-27

Four great episodes are included in this Twilight Zone Volume. Also included is some background information about the six seasons of The Twilight Zone, as well as a biography of Rod Serling. Like many who have reviewed The Twilight Zone, I became an instant fan of the show and think it still is one of the most intelligent and creative shows ever created.

My favorite episode of all time is "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street," so I had to check this out just for that. In this episode, after residents on a block see something mysterious fly overhead all sorts of unusual events begin to happen and the people, suspicious of one another, begin to make accusations and lose their patience. This episode is so intelligent because it really draws on the whole idea of mass hysteria and mob thought, and what can happen when it takes over a community, even a peaceful one.

The other episodes are all classics as well...

Time Enough At Last-Burgess Meredith plays a bookworm working at a bank. He is dissatisfied with his life at home because he never has enough time to read, so he reads everywhere he goes. He finally gets his wish of having enough time to read, with an ironic twist.

Nightmare at 20,000 Feet-This one stars William Shatner, who gives an extraordinary performance as a man who has had a previous mental breakdown, and now must take a flight with his wife. Once the plane takes off, he begins to see that all is not well as he looks outside the window. Is there really someone, or something out there, or is this just his imagination?

The Odyssey of Flight 33-A plane takes off trying to get to its destination, but mysterious things begin to happen when the plane apparently breaks the sound barrier and goes back into time.

The only beef I have with the volume is that, as others pointed out, it is a little thin (only four episodes) in a day and age where we can get an entire season of other shows on DVD. You can get other larger volumes of Twilight Zone on Amazon, but they cost somewhere in the neighborhood of eighty dollars for approximately thirty episodes. If you are looking for a specific episode, I think you are better off getting these smaller volumes for about six or seven dollars.

And this volume is a great way to start!

5 out of 5 stars TZ as zeitgeist of the times.......2005-11-03

As others have already commented on the technical features of the set and the individual episodes, I just wanted to make a few comments on the series as a whole and perhaps how it was influenced by the cultural milieu of the time.

It was the drab 50s and then turbulent 60s, and the Cold War, with its threat of possible nuclear annihilation, was in full swing. Perhaps that explains the pervasive film noir ambience and dark mood that often hangs like a pall over many of the episodes. Although the characters are drawn from all levels of society and from all walks of life--from two-bit criminals to the rich and famous--many are just various and sundry low-lifes, riff-raff, criminals, and grifters. And then there are the simply down and out--the bored or emotionally overwrought, middle-aged and overstressed, desperate housewives, the dyspeptic, dispossessed, or depressed, and your average guy just down on his luck.

Almost every human emotion or character flaw or neurosis is explored: loneliness, depression, euphoria, greed, obsession, gambling addiction, hypochrondria, the lust for power, the fear of death, feelings of inferiority, failure, and inadequacy, feelings of ugliness and beauty, the stress of modern life, the old and unwanted, the young and neglected, the dispirited but still hopeful, the dispirited who have abandoned all hope, the highly successful who find their success and fame empty and meaningless, the losers who find their failures just as galling and damning, the boredom of a comfortable marriage, the boredom of the single and lovelorn, the boredom of a respectable middle-class existence, the boredom of grinding poverty, the desire to live forever, and on and on. Modern civilization and its discontents (or more like 20th-century America and its malcontents) seem to march by in all their false and meretricious glory. If this was the dull and malaise-ridden 50s and early 60s, one can only wonder what Serling would make of our frenetic and divided and paranoid post-9/11 world.

One funny aspect of the episodes is how unflatteringly writers themselves are portrayed. The episodes starring Keenan Wynn (in the first season) as a America's most famous (but philandering) playwright and Richard Haydn in the second season as a snobbish, effete, arrogant, spiteful, and verbally abusive wine and food writer with a short temper and a sharp wit and tongue, don't exactly portray writers in a positive light. :-)

In fact, overall, the series is notable for how many unsympathetic, unprepossessing, and even despicable characaters where often in the lead roles. :-)

So all in all, a truly unique piece of Americana from a long lost era whose themes and stories have held up better than I expected.

5 out of 5 stars Nightmare on Twilight zone vol 2.......2005-10-24

"Submited for your aproval" we can find here in these vol 2 :
4 gems of the old show.
Nightmare at 20.000 feets, probably one of mst revered and beloved episodes of twilighT, and the most parodied, (in the simpsons treehouse of horror No 8, Johny Bravo, & Tiny Toons i thinks ..and of course the 80's version movie with John Lightowsegment

The others episodes are interesting for example Burgues Merdith performance in "Time enought at last", when i was child and i watched in 1983 the movie Twilight zone, I heard the dialogue between Dan Akroyd & Albert Brooks in the car about favorite episodes and this is one...

I remember when i read another review of the 1st seasen where is included originally this chapter t " The monster are due on maple street" with Claude adkins ( Aldo in planet of the apes last movie / & Sherrif Lobo).. that the aliens that appears in "monsters" were the inspiration behind Kang and the other alien from the Simpsons show.
The other episode about another nightmare with planes that have all the pasengers who travelled around time is interesting

Unfortunaly doesnt have subtittles

see Ya.

5 out of 5 stars "The Twilight Zone Volume 2" = The Best "Zone" DVD! Four Superior Episodes!.......2005-09-29

Volume #2 in the series of "Twilight Zone" DVDs is what I consider to be by far the best individual volume. It offers four classic "TZ" programs, including two of my all-time favorites -- the two airplane-related episodes ("Nightmare At 20,000 Feet" and "The Odyssey Of Flight 33").

The other two half-hour shows on this DVD are also extremely good as well -- "Time Enough At Last" and "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street".

The picture quality is very good within the "Twilight Zone" series of DVDs. Audio is good too (in Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono). There are a minimal number of Chapter Stops included on all four programs, too (3 breaks per show), but they certainly could have placed the breaks in more appropriate spots throughout each episode. Some of the chapters begin in mid-sentence. And there's no break right after the opening credits, which would have been nice.

A "Play All" option is also provided, although it's not labelled "Play All". Selecting "Feature Presentation" from the Main Menu will play all four shows back-to-back.

No subtitles are included.

Not much in the way of extra features here. But there are some text-based "Inside The Twilight Zone" items.

Since this second volume is one of the earliest (1999) TZ discs put out by Image Entertainment, you'll have to put up with the annoying "animated eyeball" Menu design (and repetitive "Zone" music that never stops) -- but it's a minor annoyance. The quality of these four episodes overcomes the aggravating and slow-transitioning Menu system. ;)

I have enjoyed nearly all of the TZ volumes, but this "Volume 2" tops 'em all for great episode selection, IMHO. The only thing that could have possibly made this volume better would have been by adding a fifth program to the disc -- that being another William Shatner classic, "Nick Of Time". Volume 9 contains that one.

Slow-paced and subtle in presentation, The Twilight Samurai captures a side of the famed samurai that is rarely seen. Set in a northeastern province (Shonai) of late nineteenth century Japan, the film tells the story of Seibei Iguchi (Hiroyuki Sanada)--a low-ranking, debt-ridden samurai who, after losing his wife to consumption, struggles to care for his two young daughters and senile mother. Emphasizing the conflicts between duty and family, and love and class rank, director Yoji Yamada has created a film that is deeply engaging on several levels: a classic tale of honor, love, and courage.

Winner of 12 Japanese Film Academy Awards, as well as an Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, The Twilight Samurailives up to its billing. But don't expect an action-packed, samurai-fighting film, or you will be sadly disappointed (there are only two modest fight scenes). --Joel Berman

Description

Seibei Iguchi is a low-ranking samurai living in the fading days of the Shogun period in Japan. His wife has died of tuberculosis, and with two daughters and an elderly mother to support, he and his family must survive in austerity. But when news of his sword-fighting prowess gets out, his superiors order him on a dangerous mission: kill a renowned warrior who is on the wrong side of a clan power struggle.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Twilight Samurai.......2007-07-03

The thing I really like about these foreign films is their simplicity. There are no expensive props, the main reason for watching this film is the story. This is not a martial arts flick, although it does have a few fight scenes.

The main character in this film was very humble but one of the toughest of warriors. He was poor, from a lower caste and struggling to feed his two daughters and ailing mother. It was a very simple story but still profound. It's natural to be drawn to the main character and side with him as all he wants to do is live a simple life and take care of his family. But as a member of a warrior clan, he also has another duty. He reluctantly accepts one final assignment which is the toughest of life.

5 out of 5 stars Anti-Samurai films at their best.......2007-06-08

The trailer and posters, and other overused and trite forms of pre-determining what a film will be like are misleading. the Twilight Samurai feels like it should be just another samurai flick where a impoverished peasant finally reveals his past and his finely tuned samurai technique to his family, enemies or a master. But there is so much more to this film. Yamada turns the classic tales of the samurai on their head, But its more than just an inversion, it separates itself from other anti-samurai films, like Sword of Doom or Sword of the Beast. The cinematography is bleak and brooding, less like 21st century Japanese cinema and more in the style of Dogme 95 or even earlier Scandinavian filmmakers. Hiroyuki Sanada is phenomenal as 'Twilight' Seibei, he portrays the impoverished retainer perfectly, allowing Yamada's film to continue to exceed expectations. A great play on the traditional samurai movie that is every bit as intense and emotional as Rashomon or Harikiri

2 out of 5 stars Great Movie - Worst DVD Quality EVER.......2007-05-31

Great Movie - 5 Stars. One of the best Samurai films ever made. Refreshingly modern take on the genre.

TERRIBLE DVD quality - 0 Stars . Basically it looks like a VHS tape

The image is poorly colored and drab. The resolution is horrible, the entire image is fuzzy and noisy. The subtitles are huge, and their glued on! You can't turn them off. The image is also Non-anamorphic - which basically means it doesn't fit a widescreen tv.

By comparison the recent Criterion re-release of 7 Samurai which was made in 1954 looks better!

Please someone (Criterion) remaster this one for the good of mankind!

4 out of 5 stars captures the end of the samurai era perfectly.......2007-05-12

Seibei, a low ranking samurai ridiculed and shunned by is peers for his complete lack of ambition. Additionally he is very poor as his meager salary cannot cover the expenses required to maintain samurai appearances, and provide for his family at the same time. His wife died long ago, any money he had was spent giving his higher status wife a `proper' funeral, her family wouldn't have it any other way. He is a doting father of two girls but does not want to remarry as his feels his status is too low and would not want to burden another female to such a life. His life is soon to get more complicated when his friend's sister (who Seibi has loved since boyhood) suddenly becomes available, yet she belongs to a higher Samurai class and as I mentioned, Seibei won't make that mistake again. His only desire in life is to take care of his family in happiness, he wants rid himself of the costly and meaningless samurai class and work the land as a farmer.

Worse for Seibei while he is a poor representative of how a samurai should appear, he is is a brilliant swordsman and the secret gets out. The clan decides to put his skills to work regardless of the risk to Seibei and his family.

That is the story in a nut shell but it is about so much more, meaning of life, search for happiness, the obstacle of pride. I can go on. This beautifully lensed film perfectly captures feudal Japan just before the Meiji restoration. It's a film that instantly transports you to another time and place. It tells a humble story yet vocers grand themes; the viewer comes out more wise through the experience. With all philosophy aside it still is a beautiful, brilliantly acted and enjoyable film. While it is a samurai movie it is also a character study, not an action film. Yet because it is a character film it makes the two small action scenes jump out. They are perfectly choreographed and one has completely unexpected outcome (based on Seibei's low status) while the other is dreadfully realistic. This movie is about realism and is a must for any samurai fan, it will nicely contrast other more action themed films and give one a deeper understanding of the social and economic context of the samurai.

Supplement material is two interviews, one with the actor and one with the director. Both short yet contain interesting material.

So why only four stars?

The film's denouement is so jarring it makes you realize you a watching a movie instead of experiencing a transcendental event. In short it obliterates that time and place transportation which captured you from the opening scenes. Here is what you need to do, since it is the last scene of the movie you can just turn it off and not view it at no harm is done. The scene starts with a train in motion, turn of the movie as soon as you see the train. Yes that last scene is so damaging to an otherwise perfect film.

5 out of 5 stars exactly the same as 'hidden blade' but better titled........2007-04-30

there's no word to praise this wonderful film. this is not just a traditional samurai movie but a wonderful drama and beautiful romance, so beautiful that almost made your heart ache to watch. the helplessness, the dreadful living condition of the scholastic samurai, so poor yet so reserved with the principles. the tough romance would make your heart tremble and wish a better ending instead of a bad one. 'twilight samurai' was a better title than 'hidden blade', because it's more poetically correct, while the hidden blade only focused on the secret weapon, a weapon only to be used at the right moment in a right place.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Version of The Twilight Zone.......2007-06-21

I had never seen the 1985 verison of The Twilight Zone. At first I had overlooked this verison of The Twilight Zone. Finally after reading most of the reviews I decided to purchase this series on DVD. After watching most of the episodes, I can say that this verison was almost as good as the original Rod Serling version in the 1960's. The writing is much better here than the 2002 verison.

Most of the episodes in this season are fantastic to watch. I do agree that the video quality could have been a little better, but I am not complaining. At least Image was able to bring this set out for the ones like myself who had never seen the 80's verison of the Twilight Zone. So I gave this series 5 stars for its artwork, writing, and acting.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-12-13

I am a Sci-Fi fan from way back. The technology in these stories is, no doubt, old. But the stores are done so very well. You can really see the difference between the Mid 80's version and the 21st century version. The work done by the director is great. The actors are timeless. There are some excellent messages in some of these stories. One in particular is "The Star". I am not overly religious, but this is a good Christmas story for those who wish to focus on the day Christ was born. Another good story, for the Santa lovers, is; "Night of the Meek." Very heart warming. Each of these is from Disk 4, episode 13. Last but not least. A good, short story, for the quick minded. On disk 3, episode 12, "I of Newton." Rod Serling would be proud.

3 out of 5 stars Let down by poor presentation.......2006-08-05

I love this series, but I really feel, like some others, that the presentation is shoddy. There have already been lots of grumbles about poor DVD transfers. I can live with the slightly murky, fuzzy picture quality. What is harder to tolerate is the awful sound - easily the worst I've heard on DVD, and much worse than the audio quality on the black and white episodes from the 60s. I've tried turning up the volume to double my normal listening level, and still find some of the dialogue incomprehensible.

Another problem is that the sleeve notes (in the UK at least) have black titles on a dark blue background - almost impossible to read! For a DVD set that costs at least £50 in the UK (about $80 US) I feel more effort was needed.

5 out of 5 stars Highly underrated.......2006-06-02

This show's niche in between the classic TZ and the tiresome new, new twilightzone shelters it from much limelight these days. However, the 80s incarnation deserves much more attention than it has been getting. There are many aspects that made it groundbreaking technically, but I like to remember the stories. So many of the concepts from TZ 80's would later be lifted by future writers simply because of the lack of attention history has bestowed.

During the time of the original broadcasts, the first 5 or 6 episodes were criticised for being too "intense" for television. Actually, they were simply great shows. I liked the first season best, with my favorites being: Nightcrawlers, Some Peace and Quiet, Wordplay, and Chameleon. In addition to being a suspense filled episode, Nightcrawlers featured a rare acting performance from Exene Cervenka from the early LA punk band X (she played the waitress.)

5 out of 5 stars Great Series...Been waiting for a while to watch it........2006-04-16

I've liked this version of the Zone the best since I was a kid. Very good writing that makes sense.

There were 24 episodes containing 59 stories in season 1. Even though I've only finished two discs out of 6, I know that it'll be well worth the money that I spent.

5 out of 5 stars Twilight Zone (1980's, seasons 2 & 3).......2007-04-12

I recorded every episode of this on VHS tape during the 80's when it was first-run. It is OUTSTANDING! It is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better than the UPN series that aired in 2003 or so...buy this if you are a Twilight Zone fan, and don't be surprised if you like it more than the original series...

5 out of 5 stars Episode: The Cold Equations.......2007-02-06

After having been sorely disappointed in the purchase of the feature length version of Tom Godwin's story (see review elsewhere on Amazon), I purchased this set primarily to see the treatment my favorite SciFi short story received. I was ENTHRALLED! The TZ's treatment was almost as good as the original written story (which is difficult to find in published form).
The Cold equations is a story that will haunt you, as it has me.
I was able to have my 20 yo son watch the episode. His reaction to it was similar to my own when I first read the short story in my teens.
Congrats to TZ for a wonderful episode. The words "He was not alone" live!

3 out of 5 stars A worthy successor to Rod Serling's vision.......2006-04-16

The 1980s revival of "The Twilight Zone" had some memorable moments that would stand out in the minds of its viewers. While it did offer some changes (i.e. The Grateful Dead offering its version of the classic theme), all-in-all it was a good follow-on to the classic 1960s series. Purchase it if you are a die-hard TZ fan - if not, its worth a weekend rental.

5 out of 5 stars so titillating.......2005-12-09

This is sweet sweet justice for those of us who grew up in the 80's and saw it at the time.

The stand-alone nature of every episode makes it great for this type of set. Skip the crappy ones and see a ton of great 80's television horror/comedy noir.

If you like Tales from the Crypt, Outer Limits (older or newer versions), et al. - you be glad to add this to a horror/fun collection.

long live the 80's

5 out of 5 stars Buy the package deal.......2005-12-05

I bought season one because back in the 80's there must have been some competing show I was watching, like Cheers or whatever. So I never got to see a great revived series. There are a few yawners, but by and large it is an excellent collection.

Submitted for your approval: The Twilight Zone's inaugural season, all 36 episodes complete with Rod Serling's original promos for the following week's episode, not seen since their original broadcast. To discuss television's greatest anthology series whose title has become pop culture shorthand for the bizarre and supernatural is to immediately become like Albert Brooks and Dan Aykroyd in Twilight Zone: The Movie; a can-you-top-this recall of famous shocks and favorite twists. Several essential episodes hail from this season, among them, "Time Enough at Last" starring Burgess Meredith as a bespectacled bookworm who is the lone survivor of an atomic blast; "The After-Hours" starring Anne Francis as a department store shopper haunted by mannequins; and the profoundly disturbing "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," in which fear and prejudice turns neighbor against neighbor (and, by the by, whose alien observers inspired Kang and Kodos on The Simpsons).

From an unsettlingly persistent hitchhiker to a malevolent slot machine, The Twilight Zone's first season did plumb "the pit of man's fears." One forgets how moving the series could be. Three of this season's most memorable and enduring episodes are the poignant and primal "stop-the-world-I-want-to-get-off fantasies, "Walking Distance," "A Stop at Willougby" and "The Sixteen-Millimeter Shrine," in which desperate characters seek refuge in a simpler past. Serling's few stabs at comedy ("Mr. Bevis," "The Mighty Casey") have not aged well, but the series finale, "A World of His Own," starring Keenan Wynn as a playwright whose fictional characters come to life, has a brilliant capper. The episodes are more deliberately paced than one might remember. Less patient younger viewers might be anxious to get to the payoffs, but once they settle into the rhythm, they will savor the literate writing and the performances by such veteran actors as Ed Wynn, Everett Sloan, and Ida Lupino, and newcomers such as Jack Klugman. The extras, including the unaired version of the pilot episode, "Where is Everybody?", audio commentaries and recollections, and a Serling college lecture, truly take this six-disc set to another dimension. --Donald Liebenson

3 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2007-05-17

I enjoyed watching the Twilight Zones many collections of stories. Some seem campy such as Roddy McDowell; People are alike All Over. With todays space shuttles technology all those rockets launches seem antiquated. We all ready sent people into space but the only one that seems relavent to today is Where Is Everybody?

Some episodes do retain some of the horror quality that I remember as a child Long Live Walter Jamison is still sends shivers up my spine; glad to see it again.

The only problem I have with some of these episodes is that they deal with social problems like bias; Judgement Night had a Nazi realism which was quite disturbing; and the Monsters are Due on Maple Street seems like they took a cue from todays papers. I thought that being in the Twilight Zone these human discrepencies didn't exist; that people from other planets didn't have these frailtys.

I have always wanted to own The Twilight Zone Definitive Editions on DVD, espically Season One, and I have finally got my wish. The Twilight Zone is a classic and very enjoying. The quality on these sets are so excellent and sharp that its hard to believe that this was a classic 1960's show. I can honestly say that these are well worth it for their prices. The younger you are, the more you'll enjoy UPN's short-lived revival of The Twilight Zone. Front-loaded with young actors (or marginal celebrities, like Jessica Simpson) and a bone-jarring theme by Korn's Jonathan Davis, the show panders to a teen demographic, which original-series creator Rod Serling would never have tolerated. It's a pale copy of Serling's original, and even the 1985 TZ revival was marginally better, but there are some memorable exceptions in this 43-episode, six-disc set. Not surprisingly, the best episodes are straight remakes of (or sequels to) classic Serling originals, including "The Monsters on Maple Street," "It's Still a Good Life" (with former child actor Bill Mumy reprising his creepiest role, and featuring a series-best performance by Cloris Leachman), and "Eye of the Beholder." Of the originals to this series, highlights include the pilot episode with Jeremy Piven; Jason Alexander in "One Night at Mercy," Amber Tamblyn in "Evergreen"; Lukas Haas in "Harsh Mistress"; Lou Diamond Phillips in "The Pool Guy"; ER's Eriq La Salle as writer, director, and star of "Memphis"; and a few others that capture the eerie quality of "another dimension of sight, sound, and mind."

Woefully miscast as the series' host, Forest Whitaker delivers facile introductions devoid of Serling's literary finesse. More often than not, the writing relies on forgettable characters and thinly-disguised variations on original-series themes; at its worst, the series demonstrates a staggering lack of originality, and the youthful casting frequently results in one-dimensional performances, with a few notable exceptions. It's hit-or-miss at best, but shooting locations in Vancouver, British Columbia, lend the series a visually stimulating variety of settings and atmosphere; production values are consistently high (as they were in the Canadian seasons of X-Files), and Rick Maguire deserves praise for his cinematography on virtually every episode. If you can forget Serling altogether (a difficult challenge for his devoted fans), you'll be able to overlook the flaws and enjoy some occasionally clever trips into The Twilight Zone as it was meant to be. --Jeff Shannon

I'm 54 years young. Some of my more vivid childhood memories are of huddling on the couch at age 5 or 6 and watching things like "One Step Beyond", "The Outer Limits" or Rod Serling on "The Twilight Zone". Little wee B&W TV with rabbit ears. I'll never forget the way those shows made me nervous; when you're a kid it seems like anything is possible.
I have a 7 year old daughter now. Our "Twilight Zone" compendium arrived last week and we watched the first few episodes last night. Big Screen, Surround Sound. She sat curled up in my lap. Because, when you're a kid, anything's possible.
An Excellent Bargain, too!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Anime.......2006-11-19

Before I bought this, I had absolutely no idea what .Hack was all about. I've got a friend that told me some things about the games but other than that I knew nothing.

This series is about a brother and sister's adventure into an online game called The World. It all starts out with Shugo (the Brother) and Rena (the Sister) winning an online contest. The prizes for this contest are Special Edition Play Forms, Black Rose and Kite. The siblings then enter The World and start exploring and getting a feel for things.

However, it soon becomes apparent that there is something really evil going on inside of The World and they have something to do with it. Everywhere the duo travels, the encounter monsters that should not be there in the first place, but they also have the ability to automatically regenerate their damage.

Soon, the duo encounter and add new friends to their clan as they travel The World, attempting to level up. Soon things take a turn for the worse when Rena disappears inside of The World and her body goes into a coma in the "real world". Now, it's up to Shugo and his friends to try to find Rena and try to save The World from the evil that threatens it.

All I have to say is that this show is both fantastic and hilarious. There are some really funny moments in this show. The animation itself is beautifully done. I believe that anyone that buys this DVD will not be disappointed in the least bit. The only bad thing is that the opening and ending credits are in their original language. However, at the end of each DVD, the ending credits have been translated so you'll know when that volume is over. Oh, and at the end of the very last episode, make sure to watch all the way through the credits for the final ending. I was so scared that it was gonna be one of those "open endings". Anyway, I'm really anxious to get the next series .Hack//Sign, it sounds like it has as much promise as this one did.

5 out of 5 stars .hack//RULES.......2006-10-24

.hack// rules . The music of Legend of the Twighlight is good. (SIGN Music is better though). All the characters ar so cute! I liked this so much, that when I brought it home from the store I watched the entire thing in one stitting. It was that good! I actually found this at Best Buy for $29.99. CHEAP!

If you liked the manga, there is a chance you might not like this.
The story is almost complety different. In the manga, Shugo and Rena still lived together while in the anime, they are separated and can only meet in THE WORLD.
Also, in the manga, Aura has a child. In the anime, she has no child and there is no talk of vaigrant AIs.
In the anime there is no Kaz!(Fumikazu)
In the anime there is a group of chilren who are hackers that capture Rena while in the manga there are no child hackers and not just Rena, but the whole gang is captured.

All in all the anime has an almost complety diferent story line, but is still a great anime that is worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars No .hack background needed!.......2006-09-22

I watched .hack//Legend of the Twilight without having seen any of .hack//Sign. I have however, played the first three .hack games that had been released for the PS2. In any case, .hack//Legend of the Twilight works without any previous .hack anime or game background.

.hack//Legend of the Twilight is mainly about 14-year old Shugo and his twin sister Rena. Their parents have been separated for some time. Shugo lives with their father while Rena lives with their mother. They remain close although they haven't seen each other in a while, and so getting together online to play in "The World" proves to be a very joyful and fulfilling experience for them. Shugo and Rena make a lot of new friends in "The World", all of which subsequently help them in their quest to get to the bottom of the mysterious events which transpire.

.hack//Legend of the Twilight pans out just like a typical MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). Kite, Black Rose, and their companions go in dungeons, fight monsters, level up, get items, participate in special in-game events... if you have never played an MMORPG, this series will give you a rather clear picture of what it's like. The plot thickens when bizarre occurences keep coming Shugo and Rena's way. They come across perpetually regenerating monsters, eerie non-player characters, and supposedly inaccessible areas among others. Soon, players start going comatose while logged in "The World" -- including Rena. This prompts Shugo and his friends to investigate, at the risk of going against the group which the CC Corporation (the company behind "The World") assigned to do the job. It's a pretty straightforward storyline interspersed with some philosophical concepts that are not at all difficult to grasp. I was, however, a tad uncomfortable with the incestuous implications of Shugo and Rena's relationship.

Exceptionally crisp and vibrant visuals make up .hack//Legend of the Twilight, although the character designs are a bit of a mixed bag. Kite and Black Rose (especially Black Rose) are rendered in an overly cutesy, superdeformed-esque style which I wasn't particularly fond of. The rest of the characters (i.e. Balmung, Sanjuro, Ohka, etc.) looked really good however. I loved the catchy opening theme "New World", but I found the background music that would play during the scenes to be distracting in general.

Overall, I found .hack//Legend of the Twilight to be an enjoyable and entertaining series with just the right number of episodes -- not too long that it would drag, but not too short that it would hang.

I got this because I wanted to watch some episodes before I purchased entire seasons. I have to admit that it wasn't what i expected. I think these episodes are too early on in the show because they are sort of cheesy. I will still buy more but probably a later volume. I was upset that there are only 3 episodes on the disc.

5 out of 5 stars Zone Junkies.......2006-02-24

Zone junkies will love this classic. These can be watched over and over and never tire from them.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a blast from the past.......2005-11-01

As others have already commented on the features and technical aspects of this set (which were generally well regarded), I thought I would make a few comments more on the episodes themselves.

This series aired for a few years in the early 60s (although it started in 1959) and immediately passed into pop culture and TV legend. Many famous actors and actresses, or soon to be famous, appeared in the show. I especially remembered the episode with Robert Redford, who was probably in his mid to late 20s but who looked 18, playing Mr. Death who had come to get an old woman.

In addition to Serling, the main writers for the show were Charles Beaumont and Richard Matheson, who had already established reputations as fantasy writers, and who wrote many of the episodes. There was one other writer who did contribute some episodes, but unfortunately I can't recall the name.

I wasn't a fan of the original series as I was a little young at the time, having been born in the early 50s, but I saw some of the shows in reruns in the mid-60s. I was more of a fan of the Outer Limits, Lost in Space, and Star Trek, and only caught saw maybe a dozen episodes at the time. So at age 53, I decided to buy seasons 1-4 and finally watch most of the episodes. (I still need to find the last season, number 5).

I was pleased to see how well they have held up. And then there are the simply down and out--the bored or emotionally overwrought, old and unwanted, middle-aged and overstressed, desperate housewives, the dyspeptic, dispossessed, or depressed, and your average guy just down on his luck.

There were the few episodes that made an attempt at humor, but as the editorial review mentions, they don't seem to have held up as well as the other episodes. It was also interesting to see how often science fictional themes cropped up--although the science aspect isn't so important as the fact that a futuristic scenario allowed Serling to explore another dark topic--such as in the episode starring Jack Warden, who has been unjustly sentenced to a lonely existence on an uninhabited asteroid. He is going mad from isolation, his only contact with the outside world being the few minutes every 3 months when the supply ship comes to drop off supplies.

So overall, I'm finding it to still be a great series that has stood the test of time. This is truly a great slice of Americana, from a younger, simpler, less complex America that is now long gone.

A brief note here. The only reason for four instead of five stars is the many extra features The Definitive Edition contains. Some people may not care about those, which cost extra. These mainly include special commentary, interviews with writers and actors, photos from the first season, the separate music scores, Serling's rare blooper, his Netherlands sales pitch (the show was selected to appear in Holland), The Twilight Zone comic book in .pdf format, and his Emmy Award appearance (the Emmy's were hosted by Chuck Connors and Fred Astaire). If all you really want is mainly the episodes themselves, this edition will probably do quite well for you.

1 out of 5 stars wasted my money.......2005-10-26

I bought this one after reading some reviews here, and I am regretting it after I was able to watch it. All the episodes were terrble. It made me blush, because it was really that bad.

I think I wasted my money on this one.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Some of the sharpest, tightest writing and acting on record........2006-10-02

In this review, I do not disclose any of the surprise endings. So don't worry.

I own about twenty Twilight Zone discs. Some of the tales are eternal classics, for example, To Serve Man, The Odyssey of Flight 33 (William Shatner), Nick of Time (William Shatner), The Fever, The Living Doll (Telly Sevalas), and Time Enough At Last (Burgess Meredith).

The volume being reviewed, Volume Three, contains some of the tightest writing and sharpest acting that I have ever encountered on any T.V. program or movie.

The first story, Kick the Can, takes place in an old folks home, where the inhabitants can view youngsters out in the street playing kick the can and other games. One of the retired old folks, reminded of his own childhood, is struck with the notion that if he can persuade the other old folks to join in a game of kick the can, they will somehow recapture some aspect of their youth. FIVE STARS.

The second story, Steel, takes place in 1974, a time in the future when boxing has been outlawed and all boxing matches are done with competing robots, where the robots look essentially like real people. The issue is that the owner and mechanic, in charge of their boxing android, realize that their android is broken and won't be fixed before that evening's fight. The owner, Lee Marvin, has the idea of placing himself in the ring, instead of the robot. What is astonishing is Lee Marvin's ability to change personna. In one scene, Lee Marvin is a forceful and demanding towards his mechanic, that is, the android's mechanic. And in another scene, Lee Marvin is groveling and apologetic towards the owner of the boxing ring. A similar transformation (demanding versus groveling) can be found in the character of Biff, in Back to the Future. FIVE STARS.

The third story, A Game of Pool, is initiated when Jack Klugman, a pool player in Chicago, vows to himself that he wants to have a match with deceased pool legend, Jonathan Winters. As it turns out, the pool legend materializes, and after several minutes of negotiating, decide to have a match then and there.

Jonathan Winters was one of the highest profile comedic actors from the 1960s (I recommend Jonathan Winters' narrative of the Paul Bunyan story, accompanied by Duck Baker on guitar, available on compact disc). FIVE STARS.

The fourth story on this disc, Walking Distance, starts when a high pressure company executive stops in a rural service station for an hour's worth of repairs on his automobile, then decides to walk to a nearby town when he realizes that the town is where he'd spent his childhood. As it turns out, when he stops in an ice cream parlor for a bit of refreshment, the year is 1938 when the man was just a boy. The man finds his childhood home, visits his disbelieving parents, and unintentionally scares himself off, when he (the executive) discovers himself (the boy) carving his name in a structure in the town park. When the executive (the man) tries to approach himself (the boy), the man again inadvertently frightens the boy, and the boy falls off the edge of a merry-go-round, injures his leg, thus explaining the etiology of the executive's limp. The story is really a mood piece, that is, the story is not a setup for a suprise ending. The story concludes with a charming little narrative. FOUR STARS.

Volume Three of Twilight Zone makes an excellent, inexpensive gift, for just about anyone. This volume does not include any especially creepy or scary scenes. This volume also includes a couple of stories that feature little kids. All of the actors on this disc are easy to like.

I LOVE THESE CLASSIC TWILIGHT ZONE SERIES. THEY ARE T.V. HISTORY AND THEY ARE NOW FOREVER IN MY COLLECTION. I WANT THEM ALL!!!

5 out of 5 stars Walking Distance.......2005-02-19

I have been a fan of Twilight Zone since the early 1960's--as a child still mystified by television. Recently, as a result of modern tech., I have been fortunate enough to stroll back in time via the dvd series of TZ. There seems to be a preference for the episode Walking Distance, understandably so. The elegiac quality of the music, dialogue, and character depictions is more than evocactive; the episode does for the viewer what the twilight zone does for Martin: takes you right along with him. How brilliant this show was/is in terms of telling a story. To hear Martin talking about the old proprietor of the soda fountain and then to have the door opened onto him napping strikes a resounding chord in us all who can remember a glimmering of those days. Vol. 3 also has Kick the Can, also pleasurable along the same lines as Walking Distance. Game of Pool, good, particularly for us Jack Klugman fans. Steel, perhaps my least favorite of all TZ episodes.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2004-01-21

I liked most of the episodes on this DVD.

Steel- Didn't like this one too much. I found it kind of boring. Maybe it's because I'm a girl and not really into boxing. (*)

Game of Pool- This was a good one. It kept my interest. (****)

Kick the Can- Another good one. I found it to be very sweet. (***)

Walking Distance- Wow, this was a good episode. Something about it nearly brought tears to my eyes. (*****)
