Handsome young men whack each other in the face with sticks and learn about life in this enjoyably silly hockey movie. Rob Lowe stars as Dean Youngblood, an American rookie who's been given a shot on a Canadian Junior League hockey team. Sure, he can skate, but can he take a punch? This coming-of-age story is about learning the beauty of vicious hockey fights. No, really. Containing both young-bucks-in-the-locker-room shots and plenty of hockey violence, Youngblood is a surprisingly entertaining cupcake of a movie--there's not much nourishment, but it sure tastes good. Watch for Patrick Swayze as the team's leader and Keanu Reeves in his first film role as the French-Canadian goalie. The DVD's most entertaining feature is the option of watching Youngblood dubbed into French--not to be missed. --Ali Davis

Forget any off-screen impressions you may have of Mel Gibson, and experience Apocalypto as the mad, bloody runaway train that it is. The story is set in the pre-Columbian Maya population: one village is brutally overrun, its residents either slaughtered or abducted, by a ruling tribe that needs slaves and human sacrifices. We focus on the capable warrior Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), although Gibson skillfully sketches a whole population of characters--many of whom don't survive the early reels. Most of the film is set in the dense jungle, but the middle section, in a grand Mayan city, is a dazzling triumph of design, costuming, and sheer decadent terror. The movie itself is a triumph of brutality, as Gibson lets loose his well-established fascination with bodily mortification in a litany of assaults including impalement, evisceration, snakebite, and bee stings. It's a dark, disgusted vision, but Gibson doesn't forget to apply some very canny moviemaking instincts to the violence--including the creation of a tremendous pair of villains (strikingly played by Raoul Trujillo and Rodolfo Palacias). The film is in a Maya dialect, subtitled in English, and shot on digital video (which occasionally betrays itself in some blurry quick pans). Amidst all the mayhem, nothing in the film is more devastating than a final wordless exchange of looks between captured villager Blunted (Jonathan Brewer) and his wife's mother (Maria Isabel Diaz), a superb change in tone from their early relationship. Yes, this is an obsessive, crazed movie, but Gibson knows what he's doing. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Mel's Done It Again!.......2007-07-04

A powerful commentary on the strength and weakness of society and religion.

Without giving too much of the plot away, one sees a stark contrast between the beauty, parity and unity of a humble tribal village and the prejudice, oppression and fear that rules the grandiose Mayan empire.

As has come to be Mel style, there are layers of meaning and powerful parallel relationships that have didactic purpose (kind of like the Father and Son theme that ran throughout Braveheart). One can see the other parallels he draws between today's 'Superpowers' and their attendant ostentation, control and fear mongering.

He manages to make concentric layers of meaning from the individual to the family the tribe and the nation and their indivisibility.

The ending will stun you, awaken you and make you question the status quo as well as Gibson's intentions when one considers his own religious background. It made me respect Gibson as a man who can see the the broader picture of what really matters in life and faith.

The imagery is stunning and, without knowing the historical accuracy, one is brought to a time and place without the Hollywood fanfare. Despite it's intensity Gibson manges to make you laugh as much as you cringe.

Well worth it.

The movie was done so well - a little too violent, but Mel Gibson did an excellent job.

5 out of 5 stars Mel Gibson Really Outdoes Himself With this One!.......2007-07-02

The Amazon "Plot Synopsis" above asserts that this film should only be watched "by people who enjoy exaggerations of history," but the only thing that Mel Gibson is guilty of, with regards to historical accuracy, is a blurring of Mayan and Aztec cultures. It was the Aztecs, not the Mayans, who were kidnapping, enslaving and sacrificing minority tribesmen in the years before the Spanish conquest. The Mayans had been gone for centuries by the time Cortez arrived.

The human sacrifices that are depicted in Apocalypto are not an "exaggeration" of history. The law of the Aztec Empire, for example, mandated a thousand human sacrifices to the god Huitzilopchtli in every town with a temple, every year. The largest mass sacrifice that was documented by the Aztecs themselves occured in 1487, just a few years before the arrival of the Europeans: On the occasion of the dedication of the immense Temple of Huitzilopochtli in Tenochtitlan (what is now Mexico City), eighty-thousand men were killed over a four-day, four-night period. By all accounts, sacrifice victims had their "heart torn out while still beating and held up for all to see," and their "body was kicked over the edge of the temple platform where it bounced and slithered...down the steps." The only detail that Mel Gibson leaves out is the cannibalism.

But Apocalypto is about a lot more than the slavery and genocide that preceded the European conquest. It is an action adventure thriller like no other.

When a Central American village is raided for slaves and sacrifice victims by Mayans, one of the villagers, Jaguar Paw, hides his pregnant wife and child in a deep hole in the ground. Jaguar Paw must then escape from his captors and return to save his wife and children before they die from exposure and starvation.

Mel Gibson usually makes great movies, but he really outdid himself with this one. Apocalypto is his geatest film to date. It is sad that many will miss this film because of the unfortunate drunk driving incident. Many are intent to boycott Mr. Gibson, and, in a free country, we should be free to watch or not watch movies for any reason we choose. But if you don't watch this one, for any reason, you're really missing one of the most affecting and exhilarating films of all time.

5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed watching this movie in hi-def.......2007-07-03

This was the first time I have seen this movie. It has a good story line, and the battles were realistic. I would recommend this movie to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Blu-Ray Heaven.......2007-06-29

Absolutely pristine video transfer and audio transfers make this a reference BD title.

I was not sure if I wanted to see this movie due to it being in Mayan dialogue with english subtitles. However as strange as this may sound I actually understood most of what was being said with only minor glances at the subtitling. Truely an awesome movie, if you want to see a Mayan Rambo then check this movie out.

May I just add that anyone who has put off seeing this movie because of Mel Gibson then I would respectfully suggest that in this instance you are doing yourself an injustice. I am sure Mel had a hand in this film but in all honesty after watching the extras on the disc I think even Mel would acknowledge that there were many, many people who made this film what it is. This truely is a masterpiece when it comes to engaging a predominantly english speaking audience into a non english speaking movie.

I had a couple of friends over tonight to watch it, knowing full well that they are both very anti Mel. They watched the movie and were blown away by it to be honest, the comment that I thought was interesting was when they said that they had deliberately not watched it due to Mel's involvement. However, they thanked me for putting it on as they thought it was a wonderful movie and very thought provoking for them with their beliefs.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest movie since Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.......2007-06-28

Just watched this movie on standard def DVD - didnt know if i was going to like it at first but after 20 minutes in- I was TOTALLY HOOKED!!!!!!!! I cant wait to see it on Blu-Ray! Im buying this tonight!

4 out of 5 stars Decent movie, great presentation.......2007-06-27

Since others have focused on the movie itself, I ask you to read their reviews for a review of the content. I want to focus on the quality of the encode instead.

For a short review of the film, I will say that it is action packed and nicely done, though I found the story slightly sparse; like the action took precedence over story.

It's also pretty violent in places, which is fine by me, but may not be everyone's cup of tea.

As far as the disc is concerned, the Blu-Ray presentation is phenomenal.

For video encoding Buena Vista chose to use the AVC/MPEG4 format. The encode is what you'd expect from HD; crisp and clear. There are no compression issues or any other perceptible visual anomalies present. It just looks darn good! The only real issue is the use of different film stocks. What you have is more grain in some areas due to the use of certain film stocks, while in others you have crisp clarity. This is as the movie is supposed to be presented, but if you don't realize why the change in "quality" it can be a bit confusing.

As far as audio is concerned, I commend Mel Gibson for his use of authentic languages on his films. The LPCM 5.1 audio (uncompressed) is absolutely clear and problem free. The channels have good separation when needed and it works really well in the Mayan language. There is also a more compatible Dolby Digital 5.1 track, listed as English, though this is not the case. There is only the Mayan language available on this release; no English language dub. You have to watch with subtitles, so if subtitles aren't your thing, look elsewhere.

Extras are presented in standard DVD resolution (480p). This is somewhat disappointing, but my guess is that the footage was shot on digital and not digital HD equipment. Hopefully in the future companies will record things in HD and present the entire package, not just the film, in HD. The film is what really matters, but standard def extras are slightly disappointing.

Over all I am happy with this release. The movie itself was good, but not "great" for me, while the technical aspects make the Blu-Ray presentation shine.

I purchased it for my son this Christmas for him to watch with his grandson. They watched it twice (both DVD's) the day after Christmas. Joe is still "hooked" on the movie after all these years and now his grandson, Cody, as well.
I copied all the verses of the song off the internet for "them."

Leonardo DiCaprio sought to distance himself from the purity of his character in Titanic, and his role in The Beach is in many ways a polar opposite. As Richard, a young American seeking to "suck in the experience" of freestyle travel in Thailand, he's a chronic liar, a pot-smoking hedonist, an amoral lover, and ultimately an unstable snake in a doomed Garden of Eden. This crazy descent might be expected from the filmmakers of Trainspotting, but The Beach is a movie without a rudder, venturing into fascinating territory, promising a stimulating adventure, and then careening out of control.

After receiving a not-so-secret map to a secluded island from a stoned-out loony (Robert Carlyle, full of dark portent and spittle), Richard sets out to find the hidden paradise with a young French couple (Virginie Ledoyen, Guillaume Canet). What they find is a tropical commune existing in delicate balance with Thai pot farmers, and before long--as always--there's trouble in paradise. There's trouble in the movie, too, as DiCaprio is reduced to histrionics when the plot turns into a muddled mix of Lord of the Flies and Apocalypse Now, with shark attacks tossed in for shallow tension. Director Danny Boyle attempts perfunctory romance and a few audacious moves (notably DiCaprio's vision of life as a violent video game), but what's the point? Tilda Swinton registers strongly as the commune's charismatic leader, but her character--and the entire film--remains largely undeveloped, and pretty scenery is no guarantee of a laudable film. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Great movie .... interesting and different........2007-06-27

Have viewed this movie several times and just continue to come back and watch it over and over again. Things that were missed during the last viewing are seen for the first time. Great movie.

P.S. This is from one copy that was on loan. Purchased 2 copies, but haven't received them yet. Not sure why?

2 out of 5 stars "Kentucky Fried Mouse".......2007-06-13

The Beach was a bit of a disappointment, considering the presence of Leonardo DiCaprio (!), Robert Carlyle (the Full Monty), Guillaume Canet (Vidocq), and Tilda Swinton (Constantine), among others.
A young American finds himself walking the streets of Bangkok, Thailand, where he encounters a mentally disturbed Englishman who hands him a map of a mysterious island. Things quickly become more complicated when the Englishman turns up dead following an apparent suicide, and the mysterious island turns out to be off limits to the public...
In short, the acting is pretty good (though nothing great), the setting is BREATHTAKING, the music is GREAT, while the plot and the dialogues are average and below average.
It seems as though the actors/directors/producers went to Thailand on vacation separately. While there they met up with each other at the hotel lounge over drinks, and then decided, on the spot, to make the best of their stay by doing a quick and easy film on the side for some extra cash/spending money.
Though the potential for a good movie was definitely there it fails to take off, primarily due to the writers.
In a nutshell, it's a mediocre movie and that's about it; no masterpiece here...

3 out of 5 stars Compelling, But Far From Perfect.......2007-03-26

I remember, years ago, wanting to see "The Beach" as it was just hitting movie theatres. I saw it about a year later on HBO during a night in a motel and I remember thinking that it was less-than-superb. Images from the film have remained in my memory over the years though and I figured I'd watch it again, since my taste in movies has changed significantly over the years. "The Beach" still is not a perfect movie and there's still many things wrong with it, but I found it entertaining and compelling, although it overstays its welcome. Three-time Oscar nominee
Leonardo DiCaprio plays Richard, an American tourist trying to find a paradise. For some reason, he's currently in Bangkok. One night, while staying in a motel, he meets an insane man ironically named Daffy (Robert Carlyle) who tells him about a secret island, a beach, that is perfect for the seeker of paradise. The next morning, Daffy is dead and has left a map for Richard. Rounding up two French guests at the motel, Etienne and Francoise (Guillaume Canet & Virglile Ledoyen), to go with him; Richard sets off to find the beach. I want to say that the first 37 minutes of the film (that is, until they arrive in the civilization) is the best part; Compelling, entertaining, and suspenseful. The rest has its moments. Anyway, eventually, Richard and company have reached their destination and are welcomed into the mixed civilization with open arms. Especially by the leader Sal (Tilda Swinton), who takes a particular liking to Richard. The rest of the film goes for a "Lord of the Flies" vibe, but never really captures what the initial 37 minutes did. One scene, where Richard pretends he's in a video game is ridiculous but pretty short so it doesn't become annoying. There's also a stretch in the film where Richard goes all "commando" before realizing he's not as stealthy as he thought. "The Beach" is directed by Danny Boyle, a director who is always trying something new. He made his name with the British drug-drama "Trainspotting" and has more recently directed the family movie "Millions." "The Beach" easily falls into the category of experimental movie. It's trying to relay an important message about humanity, as well as present a plausible and enjoyable film. It doesn't completely succeed. I liked the dynamic between Richard, Etienne, and Francoise; I loved the cinematography and art direction, which combine to make the film wonderful to look at. But the film goes on a little to long and is filled with unsympathetic characters. I can guarantee that many images from the film will remain in your mind long after you viewed the film, but I can also guarantee that there's a lot of people who won't even make it through the entire movie before turning it off. The only reason people still talk about the movie today is because of how poorly reviewed it is. It's hard for me to really make a recommendation with this film, all I can do is state my opinions and make you either want to watch it or not. It's not terrible, I think it's worth one viewing if you're really interested, and it's a beautiful film...That's all I got.

GRADE: C+

5 out of 5 stars This Film Rocks........2007-03-16

Half the reviewers on this page need to watch the film again and pay serious attention to the major themes. The Beach is one of my favorite movies of all time. I believe it is also one of the most interesting, especially for young adolescents and young adults. The Beach successfully combines themes from Garland's novel and other classic high school reader works such as Lord of the Flies and Heart of Darkness. Where The Beach excels is in its cinematography and score which is absolutely beautiful, effectively drawing the audience down into the depths of the major ironies of the film, its main themes and qualms. The supporting cast who does a fantastic job, (wow is Virginie Leydoyen sexy) never lets Leo steal the show. As a viewer i can to see that Leo's character is beautifully flawed; as he searches for pleasure, the audience can sense his pain. To me this film is greatly under appreciated and many viewers ended up missing it because it was released just after the box office smash Titanic. Check out The Beach!!

3 out of 5 stars Noble intentions but unable to deliver; "C+".......2007-02-15

I truly admire that the film was attempting to reexamine/modernize some of the themes of 'Lord of the Flies' and even 'Heart of Darkness' (there's a clip from 'Apocalypse Now' in the movie, which, for those who didn't know, is a modern retelling of the Conrad novel) but, as many have said, it just can't quite pull it off. The tone of the film is set up quite well initially and there *are* some profound moments of insight into modern society at certain stages in the film. Overall however, there just isn't enough dramatic tension, darkness, and edginess throughout. This is a shame because the film had a lot to offer: noteworthy cinematography, music (that captures the mid-to-late 90's very well I thought) and its noble intent to address the theme of "utopian visions gone amuck" and "what happens to people when they don't have to answer to authority." Boyle's work in 'Trainspotting' is a more accomplished examination of the deficiencies of modern culture and I suggest you check that out instead and/or read the aforementioned books to further understand why this film fell so disappointingly short of its potential.

--Ali Davis

5 out of 5 stars Best Hockey Movie Ever...........2006-03-14

THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST HOCKEY MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN. WITH AN AWESOME CAST AND APPROPRIATE REPRESENTATION OF THE TRUE CANADIAN GAME OF HOCKEY ITS EXCEPTIONAL. PLUS WHO CAN FORGET GOOD OLD HANNAH...THE BEST CHARACTER IN THE MOVIE BY FAR!

4 out of 5 stars Youngblood Review.......2006-02-26

No movie deserves 5 stars. :)
Youngblood is a good movie and well casted with professional acting.

Not much else to say.. ... I don't play hockey. lol But I'm sure the movie is an accurate representation of the hockey profession.

5 out of 5 stars What I think of the movie Youngblood.......2006-01-30

I saw this movie a loooonnnggg time ago, I thought it was awesome then, and seeing it took me back to my hockey years. Still awesome!

4 out of 5 stars Cynthia Gibb and hockey sticks.......2006-01-13

This is a decent movie about athletes whom you normally don't hear too much about: minor league hockey players. It centers around a young player (played by Rob Lowe) who is a wonderfully skilled finesse player, but he's also physically weak & unable to fight. In short, he is a Wayne Gretzky type of player. He just started in the minors & wants to go pro. Question: how will he deal with the goon side of hockey?

The movie is nostalgic as both Lowe and Patrick Swayze are so very young. Lowe is not much more than a teenager and this is one of Swayze's earliest films too. A young Keannu Reeves has a bit part as the goalie. Of course, with him nothing is really nostalgic: he couldn't act then & he can't act now.

The single biggest reason to give this DVD a viewing is Cynthia Gibb. She is absolutely gorgeous and really gives a fairly bland plot a sexy edge. This is also the only movie I know of where Cynthia takes her shirt off. That by itself was worth the price of the DVD!

If you like hockey movies, you may or may not like this one. Some of the chronology seemed to be pretty screwed up. For example: the coach is supposed to be giving his team a pep-talk in between periods, yet most of the players have their uniforms off. I've never played hockey myself, but am fairly certain that hockey players don't remove their uniforms in between periods. Also, the timeline between Lowe's character leaving the team & then coming back for the last game is not believable.

That said, this is a pretty good flick. It doesn't have the "tacked on" ending that I was fully expecting it to have. It also does showcase some of the less desirable features of the life of a minor league hockey player.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best made hockey movies ever.......2005-09-25

Youngblood accuretly shows the what hockey players go through around that teenage years while playing hockey. Some feel the movie is made to be more violent and all then hockey really is. Well first this movie was made in the 80's when ice hockey was alot more violent and you can go and tell the canadians that played then that they were not as physical as the movie depicts. Thia movie shows what teams do to players on the team and the hardships endured with college hockey. I've played hockey for 14 years and play for college now and you go through alot at times but its fun and the movie shows it. This is one of the best hockey movies ever made 2nd to slapshot. This is a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite Movies.......2007-03-19

I have always loved this movie. They changed the name to "Boyfriend School" so it took me a while to find it in DVD, but it's the exact same movie. It's a story with a lot of heart and exposes some of our silly notions about what really matters in the character of a person. I highly recommend it.

This movie is funny and entertaining. I viewed it previously when it was titled "Don't Tell Her It's Me". I believe that many of the scenes were shot in the Charleston, South Carolina, area - quite beautiful and historical. I'm so glad to have it in my library.

. . . makes it sound like it's a movie for pre-teens. That marketing agent should be sent back to the mail room. I saw this movie in my 20's and loved it. I found the VHS version after some hunting in my early 30's and I still love it. It's a good girly-movie with all the cheezy fun of a romance novel. (My husband actually likes it too - though he wouldn't exactly announce it.) If you like Shelly Long and Steve Gootenberg (sp?), you'll like this movie.

I had heard rumors that they were going to put out the movie "Don't Tell Her It's Me" on DVD. It has been one of my all time favorites!! The title change threw me though, but it's out and it's the same great movie I remembered!! Steve Guttenberg and Shelley Long are great in it. Now I can retire the VHS version of it!!!

Gary Cooper makes a dashing, flirtatious explorer-adventurer in The Adventures of Marco Polo, a twinkling account of Polo's 13th century travels from his home in Venice to China, where he established a new east-west trade route. Nothing comes easy, of course, so the film's script (by author Robert E. Sherwood) finds playboy Polo barely surviving his journey only to be sabotaged in his efforts to forge a relationship with emperor Kublai Khan (George Barbier). Polo's rival for Khan's loyalty (and the affections of the emperor's daughter, played by the exotic Sigrid Gurie) is the scheming Ahmed (Basil Rathbone), who has the ruler's ear and is wont to punish enemies by chaining them down for the benefit of hungry vultures. The story's general outrageousness extends to Polo's banishment to a tribe of rebels, led by a henpecked strongman (Alan Hale) whose shrewish wife takes a shine to the Venetian stud and saves him from execution. Directed by Archie Mayo (The Petrified Forest), The Adventures of Marco Polo is glossy fun, led by Cooper's charming, knowing performance and highlighted by the film's unwillingness to take anything too seriously. Scenes in which Polo is introduced to two Chinese inventions--spaghetti and gunpowder--are priceless. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Hybrid.......2007-05-18

The problem with Marco Polo is that it couldn't make up its mind whether it was a comedy or swashbuckler. Although I like him, Gary Cooper is miscast in this role (Ronald Colman or Robert Donat would have been better) and the screenplay needed to be more sober. George Barbier's Kubla Khan (sp?) is better suited to a Paramount farce with W.C. Fields. Ernest Truex, with that whiny voice, is almost unbearable. Who comes out on top as usual?....Basil Rathbone. He is the only reason I would watch this film.

4 out of 5 stars A fun adventure movie.......2007-03-15

Much has been made about the "miscasting" of Gary Cooper as the Venetian explorer Marco Polo. However he is one of the best actors Hollywood has ever seen and I don't believe we've seen his equal yet or are likely too anytime soon. He does quite a good job in this pic and it's a fun watch. It's not up there with Sgt. York or Mr. Deeds but you can't go wrong with any film starring Cooper. Also look for Lana Turner in one of her first roles as one of Alan Hale Sr.'s servants.

2 out of 5 stars Marco?.......2007-01-05

I'll always watch Gary Cooper. But as Marco Polo he's just not that good. MGM lavish production seems kind of chinzy. Amusing? Entertaining? Not so much. He hops effortlessly from Venice to China. He messes around with another man's fiancee in the 13th century as 20th century American men were wont to do. Nobody knows what Marco Polo was really like. He brought the west spaghetti & gunpowder. The rest of the story seems like it's from the screenwriters at MGM. The movie ends with Marco taking Princess Kukachin (Sigid Gurie) to her husband in Persia, the long way around. The more time to fool around until she marries. Nice.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT PAIRING OF COOPER and SIGRID.......2003-06-18

Amusing, entertaining.... two words I would use in describing this holiday confection from Samuel Goldwyn. Lavish sets, costumes, music and good performances from Cooper and the Norwegian Sigrid Gurie(she is equally good in THREE FACES WEST with John Wayne).

Sigrid Gurie suffered greatly in her shaky career: At the time mof this film it was found out that she was born in Flatbush, Brooklyn and that the "Siren of the Fjords" was a "fake".

The fact that her parents were Norwegian and moved back to Norway when Sigrid was 11 months was dismissed. (Their ship was not so far the Titanic when it sunk...)

Vivien Leigh was born in Darjeeling, India and Liv Ullmann in Tokyo. They were never labeled as Indian or Japanese. There are many similar examples and why poor Sigrid suffered this idiotic case in unbelivable. Goldwyn indeed called it "a great hoax"... Why Sigrid left Goldwyn after "Algiers" is no wonder.

But she did leave us with this film, ALGIERS and THREE FACES WEST - and she playes each role differently. It`s a shame Goldwyn didn`t look after her - me may have had another star in the tradition of Dietrich and Garbo. Though I must say; SIGRID GURIE had and has a quality and a presence all her own:-)

Go Fish won acclaim in its initial release in 1994, probably because of its irreverence in gazing at the lives of a group of young lesbians in Chicago. The film was directed and cowritten by Rose Troche, who went on to make Bedrooms and Hallways with the help of Guinevere Turner, her then-partner and star of this film. (Turner later appeared in several films and collaborated with director Mary Harron to bring the nearly unadaptable Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho to the big screen.)

Go Fish is an audience film in that it needs a crowd to make its in-joke mentality pulse. In fact, it's hard to believe the film transcended its target demographic despite the fact that in its heart of hearts it's an old-fashioned love story. It feels amateurish upon solo home viewing, though retaining an iota of charm for its low-budget clunkiness and funkiness. While it basically tells the story of a young lesbian (played by Turner) looking for Ms. Right, and conforms to a standard scenario in that love is always found where it's least expected, it benefits mostly from Troche's ability to wring some wit out of "dyke drama" and, with her insider's point of view, poke gentle fun at it with a relatively sharp stick. --Paula Nechak

5 out of 5 stars Without Go Fish there'd be no L Word.......2007-01-17

Crtiticze all you want, but without Go Fish breaking the ground that it did, we'd have no L Word. While the production values are low, hollywood was not shelling out millions of dollars tomade for, by and about lesbian films. This film is historical and paved the way for lesbian representation. Hate ot or Love it...we are here because of it.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for your collection!.......2007-01-11

This is a good movie that is well written, acted and a good message as well. A must have for the lesbian collection! It was a low budget film that was creatively done. I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars worst lesbian movie I've ever seen.......2006-12-23

My and girlfriend watched this movie and we hated it. It was senseless and we had to stop it when it was around 35 min. I couldn't watch it no more. It was horrible. My girlfriend gave it to her best friend and she said it was the worst lesbian movie she had ever seen... I agree!

3 out of 5 stars Go Fish vs. The L Word.......2006-11-05

Like many of the other viewers who reviewed "Go Fish," I was initially so repelled by this movie that I shut it off half way through. At the time I had just begun to date women and I was disturbed by the way that this movie represented the lesbian community. I found myself thinking "This is not me. This is not how I want to walk through life. This is not how I want to be seen by others." The experiences of the women portrayed in this film did not (and still do not) represent my experience as a lesbian. Ironically, this is one of the main arguments made by critics of the L-word.
In a way, "Go Fish" is a foil of the L-Word; comparing these two features may be more interesting and enlightening than watching either one alone. It has been argued that the L-word is normalizing or "mainstreaming" the queer community and thereby misrepresenting the actual experience of lesbians--but by only representing a specific subculture of the lesbian community, doesn't "Go Fish" ultimately do the same thing? Wealthy, conventionally beautiful lesbians do exist and have sex with other wealthy, conventionally beautiful lesbians (even if they are a minority).

While in the process of figuring out my own identity and role in the queer community, I found it difficult to stomach a depiction of lesbians who are so completely removed from mainstream society. One reviewer suggested that people who write negative reviews of "Go Fish" have internalized the ideas that this movie is trying to dispel. I can see their point--many people who are gueer struggle with internalized homophobia and may shun a film that depicts lesbians without all the airbrushing. Plainly, many viewers (including myself) do not WANT to see themselves in this movie because it is unconventional and "unattractive."

It's no coincidence that one word which repeatedly comes up in reviews of "Go Fish" is "ugly." The lesbians in the L-word are "hot." Shane is "hot"--people of all genders and orientations want to watch Shane and Carmen having sex. The popularity of this show speaks for itself--I believe that the beauty of the characters in the L-word has contributed to making lesbians (and lesbian sex) appealing to mainstream society, and maybe it's a means to an end (the end being equal rights). But just because people will tune in to watch Shane and Carmen having sex doesn't necessarily mean that they're going to change their minds about gay marriage... And where does this leave lesbians like Max, Ely and Moira (not surprisingly, the LEAST popular character on the L-word!) who don't fit the model?

The big question is... Are we only acceptable to society when we're young, attractive and having hot sex--but not when we want to adopt children, pay taxes together or be politically active? By purchasing and supporting a the L-word and being repelled by "Go Fish" am I just buying into a revised version of homophobia? Do I only watch the L-word because it helps me feel better about being who I am?

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good.......2006-07-15

It's funny that a lot of people are claiming they were "duped" by the cover of this movie, thinking it was going to be about two hot straight-looking girls getting it on. That's exactly what I thought when I saw the cover, which is why I never rented the movie after years of seeing it in the video store. Then after seeing almost every lesbian film there is, I decided, finally, to watch Go Fish, and was shocked when I realized the main characters weren't straight-looking at all (accept for Turner, who seems a little akward playing a butch but tries to pull it off the best she can). I was surprised that I actually ended up liking this movie a lot better than a lot of other lesbian films I've seen, even though the acting is stale. But you have to bare in mind that the movie was extremely low-budget, didn't have any big-name backing, and was basically homemade. I was also a little shocked to find that this movie was made in the early 90s, revolutionary for it's time. As for the comments people have made about the attractiveness of the actors, grow up. The whole point of the film is that looks aren't everything, and yes, in real life, we do sometimes fall in love with people who are, godforbid, unattractive. And you'd think that in the 21st Century people, especially within the lesbian community, wouldn't be as misogynistic as to say "we only want to see hot girls making out." As far as the "duping" cover of this film, I think it's sad the producers had to use it to trick people into buying it, since so many people are too shallow to see past the fact that the characters in this film, except for Turner, aren't beautiful, and that's the whole point, by the way. It's also ironic that so many people who posted hear are saying "Go Fish" sucks, rent the "L Word" instead, when the writers and directors of "Go Fish" are two of the "L Word's" creators (Troche and Turner). The story line is a bit immature but fun, and the film brings up a lot of important issues about gender and sexuality and includes people from all different races and backgrounds (another rarity, even in lesbian films). Anyway, this film is going to remain a lesbian classic inspite of its amateurishness and the bad reviews people have given it.

4 out of 5 stars the REEL Ali.......2006-07-28

After listening to the audio book Sound & Fury from Blackstone Audio, this bio pix of Ali is a wonderful self promotion.

This 1977 movie had a great cast of actors. Such names as James Earl Jones as Malcolm X, Lloyd Haynes as Herbert Mohamad, Ernest Borgnine as Dundee, John Marley as Ferdy, Roger Mosby as Sonny Liston in minor roles. There are also cameos from Robert Duval, Paul Winfield, Ben Johnson, and David Huddleston. All this creative talent playing against Ali. Ali isnt acting, he is being himself...but himself works.

They skip over his religious beliefs in this film to focus on his career.

Lets be honest, the film isnt a great film..its music is wonderful. The film is minor in scope and its major starred cast.

This movie is for real boxing fans who love films like Rocky, The champ and Digsstown, this is great to add to the DVD film library

3 out of 5 stars I thought I was renting a documentary.......2003-03-30

Expecting to see a documentary of the great man I was rather surprised when I realised this is in fact a film starring Ali himself detailing what he sees as the key points in his life.

As the three stars indicates this film is a mixed bag. Ali does a solid job of portraying himself and the ever brilliant Ernest Borgnine does a good job as Angelo Dundee. The storyline is somewhat disjointed and seeing an old Ali replaying his youthful antics is only a limited success.

There are points in the film where Ali is acting like a prize ..., whether he intentional meant to show this or whether he still didn't realise considering it was still only 1977 when this was made I am not sure.

Like the life of Muhammad Ali himself there are some areas of the film which age very well whilst others already seem rather embarressing and will only get worse as time goes on.

Ali's risking prison by refusing to be inducted into the military is a great example of a principled stand, something that will never be diminished.

However the three stages of Ali's interest in women is an example of the rather dated attitudes of the day. First we have Ali with the white hooker, thankfully saved ...by the calling of Malcolm X. The not so subtle message of this encounter equating white women as basically [easy] who are there to tempt the black man from the righteous path is racist nonsense. Ali is then saved by the perverted ideology of the Nation of Islam as spoken by Malcolm X (bizzarely played by James Earl Jones) and their "blue eyed devil" hate filled speaches. Next he moves to a transitional stage where he is with a black woman who is swiftly got rid of once she dares to dress provocatively and heaven forbid is willing to talk, even flirt with the devil white man. Finally Ali gets the perfect girl, your classic submissive and virginal young black muslim girl who needs her parents permission to go on a date.

The scenes where Ali encounters racism is no more or less convincing than the usual Hollywood stuff. Ali looks all noble whilst some small time actor is paid to stand there and call him "boy" and generally give him grief.

All in all this is probably only going to be enjoyed by the Ali fan. As someone who is a huge fan of the man despite recognising his many shortcomings I found it interesting. Someone with a limited knowledge would perhaps be better off with the modern day Wil Smith epic.

ps. I noticed they didnt include Ali getting pole-axed by 'enrys Hammer (Henry Cooper) in London. Where only the quick thinking of Angelo Dundee ripping Ali's glove and thus stopping the fight for five minutes and allowing Ali to recover prevented him from losing. ;)

4 out of 5 stars Chip Mcalister.......2002-11-17

Chip was excellent in this movie and I know what happened to him. I ran into him in San Clamente, Ca and ate lunch with him. He seems to be doing very well. Good actor and good guy. 11/16/02

3 out of 5 stars Perfect for the hard-core Ali fan.......2002-07-12

To sum it up, "The Greatest" is not a very well made movie. There are a few very taltented actors in it, but overall the movie lacks that certain special somthing that a movie needs to be good. Most of the scenes are dull, long and drawn out. And i don't believe that Muhammad Ali was the perfect choice to play Muhammad Ali, he really is not a good actor. But I did enjoy the movie, because I am a huge Muhammad Ali Fan. Many that ive heard have tried to compare this movie and the recently released "Ali" on DVD. But you can't really compare the two movies. "The Greatest", even though it's not a very good movie, its does portray what happened in Muhammad Ali's life very well. But the movie "Ali" does not portray his life, It just portray's Muhammad Ali himself, not his life. So I would say that this movie is a must for those who want to know more about Ali. Then after wards, rent or buy "Ali" to understand Ali's mind. when you do that, you'll have a great understanding of what kind of person, what kind of things he had to go through, and a much higher respect for "The Greatest."

2 out of 5 stars More compelling than ALI with Will Smith.......2002-01-05

The day after I paid to see the film ALI, starring Will Smith, THE GREATEST, starring Muhammad Ali (playing himself), showed up on cable television. I had high hopes for ALI and low expectations for THE GREATEST.

The better picture? THE GREATEST. That's not saying much (if you saw ALI), but if nothing else THE GREATEST is worth a look for Muhammad Ali's charming performance. THE GREATEST offers several compelling scenes, even if they don't add up to a coherent film, all anchored by the ever-watchable Ali.

As the 5/30/00 review points out, Muhammad Ali doesn't sanitize himself in THE GREATEST. However, the movie's 1960s documentary fight footage followed by Ali, age 36, playing himself at age 22, breaks your concentration. Thankfully, talented actors, including Ernest Borgnine, James Earl Jones and Robert Duvall, help Ali pull it together. See THE GREATEST.
