Ingmar Bergman's great 1972 film is about the elemental things: death and dying, sex, injury, repression, and the body as a fount of sustenance. No wonder Bergman chooses to focus on female characters, in this case three sisters--one of whom is dying of tuberculosis--and a maid who is the only one capable of caring for the ill woman. The film is noteworthy for many reasons, not least of all an interesting camera style that marries beautiful imagery with an anxious frame. That tension perfectly suits the overlapping psychodramas of the piece, but this is a movie that ultimately pushes beyond the particulars of these characters' virtues or neuroses to a greater mystery, one that somehow sustains our existence while slowly taking it away. A landmark film. --Tom Keogh
Description
Legendary director Ingmar Bergman creates a testament to the strength of the soul-and a film of absolute power. Karin and Maria come to the aid of their dying sister, Agnes, but jealousy, manipulation, and selfishness come before empathy. Agnes, tortured by cancer, transcends the pettiness of her sisters' concerns to remember moments of being-moments that Bergman, with the help of Academy Award®-winning cinematographer Sven Nykvist, translates into pictures of staggering beauty and unfathomable horror.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-07-03

I'm a new mom of four days and I purchased this DVD for myself 3 weeks ago after hearing a little about it from a friend. Boy am I impressed! The information given is very simple and easy to follow. I was instantly able to recognize Mason's different cries and take appropriate action. Otherwise I would probably be tearing my hair out trying to figure out that he needed to eat yet again after just finishing a meal. Worth every penny and then some.

5 out of 5 stars This DVD Rocks!.......2007-06-20

I bought this DVD for my best friend Kelly who just had her first baby and she has said "thank you" about a million times. Her husband, who was skeptical, has become a big fan too. She said it took listening and watching the DVD just a few times and now she knows exactly what her new baby girl needs with every cry. Why didn't this come out sooner? I'm looking forward to having this DVD for my first baby soon!

4 out of 5 stars Unique explanation of different cries.......2007-06-11

Having bought this hasn't changed my life but it has definately given me a different perspective to my daughter's different cries. For the most part I am able to tell what she wants but it is still sometimes difficult to distinguish between the cries -even after reviewing the DVD. It is a great DVD and aside from distinguishing what the cries mean, Dunstan does a wonderful job offering different techniques to help solve what is bothering your baby - from different burping methods to various feeding positions. This is very helpful and overall I do recommend the DVD!

5 out of 5 stars Not just for parents.......2007-06-07

I bought this as a gift for my sister before her first baby but I have found it also helps me with my babysitting duties. I don't have kids of my own and was worried that my lack of experience might mean that I didn't feel confident enough to play a large part in this baby's life. Thanks to this I don't feel like I am getting it all wrong. I would recommend the system not only to new mothers but to extended family as well.

3 out of 5 stars Pricey for what you get - In any language........2007-06-05

I saw a TV broadcast and thought, "Gotta have it." My wife and I just had our first, so I thought it would be a good idea. It seems to be useful so far, and Dunstan is good at what she does. However,I was rather disappointed to find a combined content total (lessons 1&2) of barely 30 minutes (on two DVD's! wasteful), covering only five 'words'.
These 15 minute lessons are followed by extensive praise in the form of testimonials, so called 'Bonus Features'. These run longer than the lessons. I don't understand, if I'm at home watching the DVD I've already bought the item, so why sell it to me?

The content is quality - the item is 20% overpriced.

5 out of 5 stars sisterly love.......2007-05-05

one of ingmar bergmans most moving films, as three sisters (harriet andersson, ingrid thulin, liv ullman) reunite around the pending death of one of them. harrowing and unflinching, with great supporting performances around the 3 central characters, not to mention a stark photographic style (longtime bergman collaborator sven nykvist gets huge kudos). i wish i could understand swedish, since im certain there were many subtleties of the language that can not be conveyed in translated subtitling. not a movie you want to watch if youre feeling down, but it IS oddly cathartic. one of the masters best.

1 out of 5 stars I STILL HATE BERGMAN!.......2007-04-20

I have tried for years & years to get it. I still don't! This being the one Bergman film I seem never to get around to seeing, I made sure I saw it this time @ a Bergman retrospective @ my local art house theatre. Well @ least I sat thru it. During the show, no less than 5 people got up & just walked out. So I guess it's not just me! I personally found it to be mediocre at best. I don't get why folks think this is such an incredible film? The storyline is just so banal, as are the continuous close-ups of faces centered mid-screen. DATED TO SAY THE LEAST! I don't think it holds up-period! I have said it before & I still believe that if you want to see what Bergman was attempting thru-out his career, GO SEE "INTERIORS" BY WOODY ALLEN! He does Bergman BETTER THAN Bergman! And don't even get me started on Liv Ulman---ugh!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Sounds Of Cries And Whispers Or A Study In Red.......2007-03-28

The idea of this film that is considered by many as Bergman's crown achievement came to him in his house at Faro where he lived by himself for sometime in a melancholy state of mind after a rather painful breakup. One image kept coming to him and it was a very vivid and persistent image of a red room (red walls, red furniture) and four women sitting at the window in the room and dressed by the fashion of the beginning of the 20th century. He could not shake the image out of his mind and he knew that the only way to deal with it would be to start writing about the women - who were they, what was their relationship, their lives, their fates?.. He also knew that should the movie be made of his writing, the dominating color of it would be red. Bergman talked with affection and gratitude about his friend and long time collaborator Swen Nykwist who spent many days creating the passionate haunting red world of "Cries and Whispers. The title came to Bergman from one of the reviews on a Mozart's sonata (he does not remember which one). The sonata was described as sounds of cries and whispers...

"Cries and Whispers" is about pain, death, love, lust, hate, and self-loathing. There are more than one scene in the film that I found unbearable, horrifying and depressing. In the same time, it is about beauty and power of life, every minute of it - how little we appreciated it until it is too late. Typical Bergman's subjects, Bergman's actresses giving amazing performances, strikingly beautiful - it even hurts your eyes cinematography by Sven Nykvist - typical Bergman's masterpiece - what less do we expect from him? I admire the brilliance of it: acting, cinematography, Bergman's simple but devastating approach to Death as an inevitable part of life. The ending is heartbreaking - with Harriet's face and her words from beyond the grave about appreciating every minute of life...

Not my favorite but powerful and devastating film of the great master.

2 out of 5 stars My Least Favorite Bergman.......2006-12-24

Really didn't think this movie was as convincing and gut wrenching as most of Bergman's films. He does happen to be in my top list of directors, but this movie just didn't blow my mind. The chemistry of the actresses just wasn't there. It didn't achieve the amount of misery i expected because it simply is not bergman at his finest. I even could consider it a bit boring. I story line sounds wonderful, the movie itself...not quite there...

5 out of 5 stars Pain, Love, Hate, God, Death...Yet Another Bergman Masterpiece........2006-10-13

How many masterpieces can one director make? In the case of Ingmar Bergman, the answer would be plenty. This is one beautiful, but very painful and at times horrifying film. I think I've yet to see another film that depicts the pain, suffering and despair of dying to such vividness that like the characters, one almost feels the need to look away. The story itself is fairly simple - a woman is in the final stages of cancer/tuberculosis and her two sisters and maid take care of her in her final days - but Bergman's unique narrative style and the complexity and depth of his script turn what at first seems a horror show into a profound meditation on faith, love and mortality. Bergman's direction is simply too perfect. The way the film is conceived visually couldn't be more evocative of its themes. The intensity of the color red to convey the hell these characters are living, and the chamber-like, claustrophobic atmosphere it creates is suffocating and exhausting. Sven Nykvist's Oscar-winning cinematography is simply one of the most inventive and unique I've ever seen in a movie. Bergman's narrative strategy is incredibly thoughtful and effective; it's like the scenes flowed into each other, and despite the horror we are to endure, there is such tact, sensitivity, attention to detail and a feeling of intimacy to every scene. It's simply glorious to behold, appreciate and let yourself be taken by the emotions and insights this film has to offer. All four actresses give spectacular performances: Harriet Andersson (Agnes) is searing physical pain personified, Liv Ullmann (Maria) is so nuanced and real in her flight sensuality (one extended scene that is a close-up to her face is astonishing in the incredible nuances of expressiveness and what the character is trying to conceal but can't), Ingrid Thulin (Karin) is chilling to the bone (and that one scene that is about mutilation in a very sensitive place is for sure one I'll never forget) and Kari Sylwan (Anna) is pure warmth, dedication and love. Bergman has a fame for depicting a bleak and pessimistic view of the world, and I won't argue with that, but I don't think his humanism is addressed very often. I had heard so many things about how depressing and horrifying this film is, and it is indeed, but it is not hopeless. Yes, Bergman suggests that the world can a horrible place and the human experience is full of pain, loneliness and cruelty, but he also suggests that if we extend our love to one another and let ourselves be loved, the burden won't be as hard to bare, and that there will be moments that will bring us love, happiness and grace, as Agnes says in her beautiful and haunting soliloquy. Agnes manages to find solace and consolation even though she's living the most excrutiating hell because she allows herself to love and be loved, and her confrontation with death won't be as terrifying. Maria and Karin on the other hand, as the film suggests, will have to endure the pain and fear of dying in utter loneliness because they don't allow themselves to be loved and have lost the ability to love as well. The film is also bold and insightful enough to suggest that the most awful of circumstances in which a human being can be is paradoxically what strengthens one's faith and love, therefore sustaining one's existence. An amazing film.

A Masterpiece.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Negative, biased, one-sided depressing documentary.......2007-06-08

I bought the film in order to show it to my Spanish students and engage them in a discussion about the recent immigration debate. After previewing the film, I ultimately decided not to present it to my students. The documentary only presents one side of the issue -- that of Americans on the border fighting the illegal aliens trying to get in. The filmakers perpetuate, as a result, the stereotype of the drug-running, criminal scary Mexican doing everything he can to get across our border to continue his life of crime. There's no attempt on the part of the producers to show the underlying causes for the illegal immigration nor the benefits our society gains (especially the agricultural industry) from the migrant workers. If you want to explore the hot-topic of immigration in more detail, this documentary is definitely NOT one for your research.

4 out of 5 stars Shows lots of problems but still way too positive.......2007-02-12

America needs to wake up and solve the problem of illegal Mexican immigration. Lots of interviewed people feel sorry about the 2,000 people that died trying to cross the border. I say, there haven't been enough deaths! Stop feeling sorry for the criminals and start deporting them. We also have to stop offering any type of free service (e.g. healthcare).

5 out of 5 stars United States in Danger!!!.......2007-01-11

This is an excellent documentary on the current border problems facing the United States. We cannot continue this way. Decisions will have to be made in the very near future (so we may have a future), and the decisions will have to be made by all Americans for the benefit of the United States; unless, of course, you wish to go the way Rome did!!! (as in, down the tubes!!!)

4 out of 5 stars Need to be here to see it first hand.......2007-01-04

This is a good DVD to show what is really going on. You have to be here to really see what is going on. I live in the area and have witnessed some of this first hand. The presentation could have been better when comparing the pro-illegal immigration v.s. anti-illegal immigration groups. My grand parents came into this country LEGALLY through Ellis Island in NYC in the early 1900's. They put America first and learned English, became US Citizens and yet kept their ethnic culture from Europe. It is disgusting how many do not feel these illegal aliens have done anything wrong. What part of ILLEGAL in Illegal Alien do you not understand? Because our government has not taken this seriously in enforcing the law, many terrorists have already entered our country. Wake Up America!

5 out of 5 stars Cochise County USA - Cries from the Border.......2006-11-04

I was very impressed by the objective treatment of the illegal immigrant situation on the Arizona Border. As a Southern Arizona resident, I've seen both sides of the issue first hand. If you are concerned about the border, you will likely find this movie to be informative. It portrays both sides, pro and con of stricter enforcement vs. amnesty.

Most importantly, it portrays the human element. Everyone along the border is affected by the debate. Debate if you will, humans (families, children, business owners) and the environment (range land, recreation areas) are being affected. Long time residents of border towns are fearful because of the limited support they have for security and the damage to property of litter that the constant people trafficing causes. Many individuals and groups are concerned about the health and safety of those crossing into the US. Either way, safety, health problems and, of course, money are all issues presented in the forefront in this film.

Cries from the Border portrays these concerns in sympathy (and objectively) for both sides. I recommend this movie for anyone who wishes to present an informed debate about the critical issues of border security. It informs realistically and gives insight into how critical this issue is to all of us.

5 out of 5 stars A rare film.......2006-07-22

Basically, I am writing to rebut the negative reviews on this page. I saw this film years ago, and it rang very true to me- so much so that I wanted to buy the DVD. Have to admit that I was myself an ex-pat teenager in Europe in somewhat the same era, and Merchant Ivory replicated the feel of that time and place very well.

The acting was excellent, and the reviewers who complain that the film doesn't "go anywhere" miss the point in that this is a film about growing up and experiences that make up part of who we are and therefore can't be compressed into plot developement, of beginning, middle, and dramatic end.

Also think Francis, the possibly gay character was touching, reminded me of people I have known etc. It seems to me that the teenage theme of betraying true friends because of peer pressure and desire to appear "cool" isn't dealt with very much in films, so hats off to Merchant Ivory and the author for trying.

3 out of 5 stars Contains Profanity.......2006-07-17

The reviews already written sum up this movie pretty well, so I can't add anything new.
It's a typical artsy Merchant Ivory movie with lots of pretty pictures and not much story. If you view it just as the daughter's diary and don't expect a plot, it's more acceptable.
I saw it because I'm a fan of James Jones and of Kris Kristofferson. It is boring, disjointed, and hard to sit through, but it does have a few redeeming moments. It's like watching someone else's home movies. Little drama until Billy Willis (Jones/Kristofferson) dies in the end.

1 out of 5 stars No Sir, I Don't Like It.......2005-11-01

I usually can stand "artistic" films, but this one was sooooo awful.

The biggest complaint I have with the movie is that nothing ever happens. The film is split into several sections, all around major events in the life of the daughter of an American expatriate writer living in France in the 60's. In each section many events occur, and right when you think there will be some resolution, or conflict, or anything... they switch to another section. It's laughably pathetic how bad this is!

Case in point, at the end of the movie, the adopted son, Billy, is given a journal from his biological mother after his adopted father dies. He doesn't want to read it, yet his adopted mother and sister insist that he read it because it was the wish of the deceased father. So how does the movie end, does he reject that part of his life? Does he read it and gain some insight into who he is? Hell if I know, because the movie ends with them dancing on the porch, without any resolution!

This movie has not one redeeming quality. The plot is full of hiccups (such as the one previously described), the acting is uninspired, and there appears to be no theme whatsoever! Watching this movie is like passing a kidney stone, it hurts like hell, and it's an incredible relief when it's over!

4 out of 5 stars strong characters, somewhat sleepy story.......2004-02-23

I watched this movie for the second time (I think) last night with my husband and daughter. The R rating is somewhat extreme for this movie. Aside from Kris Kristofferson's characters rampant swearing, this movie could easily be rated PG-13 and then only for frank discussions about sex between the father and daughter. It could actually be considered a good "coming-of-age" movie for liberal-minded families, though even those who consider themselves liberal might disagree with the father's philosophy on life and his advice for his fifteen-year-old daughter. Of course, if you view the story and follow the plot, you might feel that he was compelled to be deliberate and forthright with her. Unlike many fathers, he takes the time to interact with his daughter and have heart-to-heart talks. This father also takes the time to cultivate his relationship with his wife. Bill and Marcella obviously have a very passionate relationship, but alcohol use is very prevalent as well. In any case, the movie is intriguing. I especially enjoyed the young seven-year-old Channe played by a beautiful young girl (I don't know her name). The scene in the treehouse with the young French actor is realistic enough to be disturbing and frightening. Channe's transition into adolescence (now portrayed by LeeLee Sobieski) is very believable. Her relationship with Francis, also an American, is so frustrating because both characters are so realistic. You feel the anguish that Channe experiences having a friend whom most young people would shun, and over time, Channe would choose to shun as well. Francis is one of those people whom you want to like because he's interesting to be around, but unfortunately, he's also so self-deprecating and self-absorbed and whiny that you can't help but dislike him at the same time. This relationship between Channe and the effeminate, opera-loving Francis might be enough to turn off many viewers.
Channe's adopted brother Billy remains an intriguing enigma throughout the movie and certainly his character could have been fleshed out more. What we gather is that he's sensitive and kind to Channe, but never seems to make friends. In France, we never see him even interact at school, or even grow into adolescence at home. If this is an autobiographical movie, then one could at times only wonder if Channe and her brother lead isolated lives within the family. There are moments of connectedness within her family that do dispel this, however. When Billy arrives with his family in the United States, he seems unhappy and out of place right from the start. There is the slightest hint that he might be quietly gay, and therefore somewhat repulsed by Francis' blatant personality. We experience a moment of unrequited connection between him and Channe's American boyfriend.
One could find so much to explore within this movie- the interracial relationship between Candida (their Spanish or Portuguese maid who, by the way, has a lovely, siren-like singing voice) and her black boyfriend, Candida's fear of commitment and total devotion to Channe, devotion that leaves her lacking the ability to create her own life. Barbra Hershey's portrayal of Marcella, a fun-loving wife and mother with no apparent career aspirations, who turns to alcohol to soften life in Paris as an American in the 60's where it's obvious she and her husband and friends often felt out of place. What's disquieting is that she experiences the same feeling of being an outcast initially when they move back to the United States.
Well worth viewing, though some like my husband might watch the movie and ultimately comment "What's the point?" (and rightfully so, since everyone is entitled to their own opinion). This is not entertainment for entertainment's sake. It is an exploration of relationships.

1 out of 5 stars A Waste of Time.......2003-12-14

The critics must have been really drunk when they rated this movie. That or they were bribed with a fantastic dinner. The movie is full of nonsense and is looooong winding. Easily one of the worse movies I have ever seen.

Product Description

Subtle Voices: Cries from Colombia is a film that highlights the complicated struggles of the Colombian people. From the capital city of Bogota and the corruption of Medellin, to the rural landscape of Apartado, follow documentary filmaker Andrew Patterson as he takes first hand accounts directly from the mouths of those tortured and abused by armed actors in the violent civil war that has been raging in Colombia for over fifty years.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Honest documentary.......2007-02-14

This is a low budget documentary, but I do feel it gets the message across. I guess Mr. Rico has never seen the film, Super Size Me or any other non-Discovery channel documentary since he was expecting it to be filmed in High Def. I also do not think Mr. Patterson's intention was to "make money off you" since he was on a mission trip. Overall, I enjoyed the film and the glimpses of Latin America it provides.

1 out of 5 stars Low Budget.......2006-12-19

I was very disappointed with the quality (audio and visual) of the documentary, particularly considering the purchase price. First, the interviewer's technique is not very skilled, and each individual interviewed is not asked important follow up questions. Second, the audio and picture quality is akin to the quality that can be obtained using a $250 (or less) camcorder purchased (not on sale) from your neighborhood electronics store. Third, there is no cohesive theme between the interviews, and those interviewed tend to say the same thing. Although the documentary deals with a particular subject, those selected to be interviewed should have been veted. In short, its worth about $5. I didn't learn anything new about Colombia or the goings on in the country. Honestly, I've traveled throughout Latin America, and I have taken better videos (including audio quality) and come into contact with more interesting people (survivors of death squads [i.e. cleansing campaigns] and economic/ political refugees) during my Latin America travels. Hey, maybe I should make a documentary too!

I don't want to sound harsh, but the price doesn't match the quality, which is a very big bummer. There's nothing wrong with making a quick buck, as Patterson is obviously very adept at doing (particularly since he got me for $20 of my hard earned money), but the other reviews are GREATLY INFLATED. Oh yeah, I also should have taken note that the only other reviewer shares that same last name as the documentary's producer/star/ narrator "Patterson". I don't want to sound jaded, but having read that review and watched the movie, I suspect that the other reviewer HAS to be related to the documentary's creator. You've heard of the saying "that he/she has a face that only a mother could love". . . well this is a documentary that only a realtive could love.

4 out of 5 stars Cogent & Profound.......2006-01-22

Imagine a documentary film without an axe to grind. Let the camera do the story-telling. That's what Andrew Patterson has accomplished in "Subtle Voices." He's not out to tackle the American government, the drug cartels of Columbia, or a leftist group think. Subtle Voices represents a wholistic series of interviews to raise awareness and ask difficult questions about an even more difficult human quagmire in Columbia. Some want a diatribe to support the current Columbian government, others want a sermon against US misguided interventionism. Patterson does not provide either in this poignant documentary. Instead he heightens awareness, provokes mind and conscience, and does so with a cogent and profound collage of Columbian images. Indeed, subtle voices, cries from Columbia.

Description

Clinical psychologist Dr. Tony Hill (Robson Green) has an extraordinary understanding of the criminal mind. It enables him to empathize with both victim and murderer - and even to visualize the crimes. Working alongside Detective Inspector Carol Jordan (Hermione Norris), Dr. Hill helps the police profile and track down vicious killers in northern England. Tony persuades the police to reopen the case of his long-standing patient, serial-killer Maggie Thomas, in order to recover the bodies of her victims. Carol, however, believes that Tony made a mistake in bringing his pretty, young student Laura Webster along on the search. When Laura's best friend is kidnapped and murdered, loyalties begin to fray and Tony finds more than just his judgement called into question. DVD extras include: Trailer, Interviews with Robson Green, Hermione Norris, Val McDermid, Sandra Jobling, Phil Leach, Bios of Robson Green and Hermione Norris, About The Author, Behind the Scenes montage

4 out of 5 stars Stylish Terror.......2004-10-26

Except for a bit close to the end where the exposition gets murky, this is a superior entry in this series. With the trademark violence of this series represented in large part symbolically, Tony Hill (Robson Green's character) is faced with a killer on the loose, a patient who cannot remember where she buried the bodies of the children she killed five years before, and a troubled student.

Green gives another good performance of a seriously off kilter psychologist (he's totally competent as a psychologist, it's his personal life that needs some serious adjusting). Green's character usually seems on the edge of a meltdown, pulling back at the very last minute.

Lots of clever camera work and some nice music give this one a bit of Scott Ridley flavor at times.

I really enjoyed this film, I liked the action, the beautiful girls and think Fawnia is gorgeous.
The same production group has a new website called www.boundheat.com that are selling dvd's on their new series, along the same genre line and for great prices. My friend ordered one and it came quickly and they reply to all emails, which you never find at a storefront on the web. I heard they have a whole new line in production, can't wait, love the girls, love the storylines.
