This energetic, sardonic, and richly funny adaptation of Daniel Defoe's classic novel is completely unlike what you might expect from genteel Masterpiece Theatre. The heroine, Moll Flanders (Alex Kingston), after being born in prison, wends her way through the top and bottom of 18th-century English society, has five husbands (including a roguish highwayman who becomes the love of her life), many lovers (male and female), travels to America and back again, and in general discovers all that is cruel and sweet in life. Kingston tears into her role with gleeful amorality and delicious charm, often turning to the camera with a seductive smile to ask, "What would you do?" This British miniseries is brilliantly written, skillfully directed, and superbly acted all around (with particularly delightful performances by Diana Rigg and Daniel Craig)--in short, among the best of its kind; both a cunning examination of social morés and a hugely entertaining story. Not to be missed. --Bret Fetzer

"Wherever we are, that will always be the center of things." So professor Guy Pringle reassures his new wife, Harriet. Unfortunately, where they are is Bucharest in 1939, with the Nazis gathering on the border, and fascism casting longer, darker shadows. Thus begins this epic 1987 miniseries based on Olivia Manning's Balkan and Levant trilogies that was originally broadcast in the United States on Masterpiece Theatre. For most Americans, it was an auspicious first look at England's glamorous former First Thespian couple, Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson, who, as one character notes of Harriet, "lightens the darkness." Fortunes of War suggests what Casablanca might have been like had it followed Victor and Ilsa instead of Rick, who famously didn't want to stick his neck out for anybody. Not Guy. "I want to do something more dramatic than lecturing," he proclaims. "It is our duty to shine a little light to hope someone notices." His activities are enough to put him on a Nazi death list, forcing Guy and Harriet to Greece and Egypt. "It isn't a lark," Guy tells Harriet early on, "but it is an adventure." Fortunes of War is populated by colorful characters, most notably the pitiable and decidedly untrustworthy Prince Yakimov (Ronald Pickup), and the dashing young soldier Simon Boulderstone (Rupert Graves of The Forsythe Saga and A Room with a View). There is plenty of intrigue, betrayals, domestic melodrama, and emotional separations and reunions to propel this nearly seven-hour production to its powerful conclusion. Readers of Manning's books and Branagh and Thompson fans will find the release of War good fortune indeed. --Donald Liebenson
Description
The Baltics, 1939. British professor Guy Pringle (Kenneth Branagh) arrives in Romania with his new bride, Harriet (Emma Thompson) and becomes enmeshed in the politics of anti-fascism. Despite Harriet's serious misgivings, Guy's social circle soon includes members of the British Secret Service who want to involve him in dangerous missions, and a downtrodden prince who zeroes in on Guy's generous nature and winds up living with the Pringles. Thus the stage is set for this mesmerizing story of marriage tested by accidental betrayal, callous insensitivity, and a world in upheaval. Based upon the autobiographical novels of best-selling author Olivia Manning, and set in places as far-flung as Bucharest, Athens and Cairo, Fortunes of War is majestic in both its scope and its vision.

Choose Carefully.......2007-07-04
Brilliant Series, but unfortunatly , the copy I received was Region 1, and I was unable to play it on my DVD player. No worries on my computer, but the big screen was impossible. But a top show.
Everything I expected - and more!.......2007-06-19
This is a brilliant series with a wonderful cast.
As I'm not one to give away plot and action in any film, I'm going to limit my review to what I've stated already.
This is a five star production from some great actors, Including Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, and Ronald Pickup. There are a lot of cameo roles from people who acted in great films in the past as well.
This one will have you on the edge of your seat, but set aside some time for it. It's worth every minute on the clock.
A little-known gem of a miniseries.......2007-04-08
On the brink of World War II, follow a young British academic couple (played by Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh)from Bucharest to Athens to Egypt.
Meet their friends, their refugees, their colleagues, and the locals in each country who are bewildered, befriended, bemused, or betrayed by the Brits.
Learn a lot of history painlessly as the inevitability of the war unfolds.
Become interested enough to go back to the original Olivia Manning novels; for once the film does the book justice. The series has excellent detail in costumes, language, politics, dress, silliness, and seriousness. The plot is complex and compelling, the writing literate, intelligent, and entertaining. Best of all, the acting is superb.
Thompson the terrible.......2007-02-13
Why do I dislike Emma Thompson so much as an actress? Aha, I know why -- she can't act. She can read lines and make gestures, but never makes me believe for a second that she's who she's pretending to be. She ruins everything she touches. I have to admit I couldn't watch this in its entirety, purely because of her. For those who haven't seen the show, just look at her picture on the box; she looks like a woman wearing a hat that belongs somewhere, anywhere, else. It's like a pimple on cheese. Apart from her, it was OK, but I don't like Branagh either, another actor afflicted with an unhealthy dose of self-consciousness in his acting, which is fatal.
quick and perfect, thank you very much!.......2007-01-18
I ordered the DVD in the US around the 15th Dez. and it was delivered at Cologne only two weeks later - I think this is a good job.

In Bush Family Fortunes: The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, journalist Greg Palast argues persuasively that George W. Bush was allowed into the Air National Guard ahead of other applicants due to his political connections; paints a damning portrait of how over 90,000 Florida voters, predominantly black, were prevented from voting in the 2000 election; discusses the number of government contracts handed out to large corporate donors to Bush's campaign--and that's just the first half-hour. Palast doesn't have the cinematic savvy of Michael Moore, but Bush Family Fortunes acts as a valuable corollary to Fahrenheit 9/11, exploring certain facets of the same argument--specifically, that the Bush family is detrimentally tied to both the Saudi Arabian ruling elite and the American oil industry, with whom they trade influence and money for mutual benefit. Palast's investigations will stir the blood of any Democrat and may raise doubts in some Republicans. -- Bret Fetzer

hurts to realize poppy bush a crook too; not just his sons.......2007-05-17
Finally, a chance to "see" Greg Palast (and his eccentric fedora), whom I read all the time. What poppy Bush and his mining company employers did in Tanzania to THEIR people is a national disgrace. I wonder, is that why they blew up our embassy??
Bush Familt Fortunes- The Best Democracy Money Can Buy.......2007-04-04
Told the truth and really will shoch the people of the United States. It should me put on National TV during prime time.
Not so long ago..........2007-03-29
...US got a fine president doing a fine job, but since he liked a b...j.. in the office from time to time, they prefered to replace him with one nerd who liked to f... the US and the whole world.
Why should anyone be concerned about some petty elections' misdemeanors, when concern should be about using (and maybe asking for) fabricated evidence so he could start a stupid war, next being the first terrorist in US by firing (or getting them fired) those who are trying to make some sense and getting things back on the right track (extreme right wing doesn't fit that description). Of course, since his grandfather made his fortune by helping Hitler's finances, he must have learned there what he was supposed to do.
Don't beat around the Bush, TRASH IT!!!! He deserved impeachment even SINCE HE WAS ELECTED THE FIRST TIME : WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?????
based loosely on facts.......2007-01-19
I have to admit this is a little over the top. However. that said it still contains important facts that americans should be made aware of. some what of an inside look at the ugly side of our reality with bush
One Of The Great Investigative Reporters Of Our Time.......2006-12-24
Greg Palast does the type of investigative reporting made illegal under "Patriot" Act III. Greg bends over backwards to give people the benefit of the doubt which really makes them look bad when he gets the goods on them. Greg and his team do exhaustive research. Greg's investigations are also funded by a non-profit organization so he's not beholden to the corporate media. Greg Palast is my hero. If you have an aversion to the truth, you probably won't like this video or any of Greg's work. If you like true investigative reporting, Greg is your man.

WONDERFUL PIECE OF HISTORY.......2007-05-14
The film is a wonderous look at years before how things were and the poor unfortunate Moll is having a very difficult time. A pleasure to watch and so well put together, even with the current Mr James Bond featured!!!
WOW!.......2006-10-01
I'll go into this review assuming you know the story of Moll Flanders, all right? That saves me time for my soap boxing climbing which is coming up in a moment. Moll Flanders is among my favorite books of all. (If you don't believe me, check out my review of it.) Purists might object that this 1996 film version strays a bit from the original, but as is the case in some other rare instances (the 1991 motion picture version of The Last of the Mohicans, for instance) it actually enhances the tale in so doing therefore the sacrifice of authenticity is more or less worth it. What is shocking about this production, which aired on PBS's Masterpiece Theater back in the `90's, is the extent to which the filmmakers chose to focus less on Moll as a survivor against all odds and more on those erotic elements left understated by Defoe. Here by my estimate perhaps one in four scenes in the movie contain both nudity and sex: sometimes downright raunchy, rutting-like-beasts-in-heat sort of sex, too. It blows my mind how back in those happier days of the 1990's, before that dictatorial anachronism that is the FCC was quite so draconian about flexing its Puritanical muscle, this version of Moll Flanders actually aired in prime time. As I said up there in my title: WOW! Don't see the Robin Wright Penn adaptation that misguidedly sets this story in the 1700's instead of the 1600's, see this one. Or better yet, read the book. It's truly great literature.
wrong casting job for this film.......2006-05-12
the heroine simply turned out to be too clumsily big-mama sized unattractive. she didn't look a bit like young woman that might differred her from other women around her. and the screenplay was a poorly adapted one that made the viewing a clinched no-brainer. the storyline is too tasteless and boring that made the viewing a painful endurance.
Missing scenes, Added graphic sex scenes-same production, different edit.......2006-02-27
This DVD (The Fortunes and Misfortunes of Moll Flanders) is renamed for a purpose: it is a different edit of the "Moll Flanders" that PBS put on a few years ago. This edit loses at least one scene (the garden scene with Moll and Roland in the strange, circular shrubbery) and some of the narration is either missing or moved. The result is a different product. The time gained by losing a scene (or more) and narration is spent in adding graphic sex scenes for nearly EVERYONE Moll sleeps with (yes, even the disgusting, drunken baronet, but thankfully, his pasty bottom is one of the few that isn't shown in the act). Why this edit adds so many more sex scenes and then does not add any new scenes or retain the old scenes is beyond my understanding. This edit results in a less satisfying story.
If that were not enough, the music is changed for this version. After a while, you can get used to it, but it is a much sweeter soundtrack and often doesn't seem to go that well with the scene as a result.
Don't buy this version if you watched it on TV and loved it.
"DON'T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT!".......2006-01-01
I purchased this many years ago on vido tape. And just recently watched it again this New Year's Eve. Let me say, it has lost none of it's sparkle. Moll is as firery and adventurous as ever. This is one of the best productions ever to grace Masterpiece Theatre and that is saying something.( Pease see this version and NOT that HOLLYWOOD glossed over one.) It is not for the kiddies mind you, Moll leaves nearly no sin unturned but she is such a sweet funny girl deep down you just want her to win.
If you only know Alex Kingston from her work on ER well, you are in for a Big and may I say enjoyable surprise.

Great 50's matinee swash and buckle.......2006-08-14
Pristine presentation, though no extras. Two films on two discs follow the adventures of Captain Blood made fameous by Errol Flynn 15 years earlier. Fourtunes of Catain Blood is in black and white while Captain Pirate is in quite glorious color. No Oacar contenders here, but interesting stories, colorful characters, and some pretty good swordplay. Recommended to those who cherished their time as a kid at the Saturday matinee, or those too young to have had the pleasure.
Two Great Swashbuckling Sagas! .......2006-07-20
This review is for the Midnite Movies DVD "Fortunes of Captain Blood" and "Captain Pirate," both from Columbia Pictures and produced by Harry Joe Brown, who produced a number of Randolph Scott westerns.
This Double Feature DVD is distributed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The video transfer is excellent. The movies are remastered in high definition and have subtitles in English, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish.
Louis Hayward and Patricia Medina were teamed together for a number of swashbuckling sagas. In addition to the above, the team also did "The Lady in the Iron Mask", and "The Lady and the Bandit", which I hope will be released soon since their movies were very entertaining.
The first movie on the DVD is "Fortunes of Captain Blood", 91 min., black & white, 1950, directed by Gordon Douglas (G. Douglas directed "Doolins of Oklahoma" and "The Nevadan", two exciting Randolph Scott westerns. "Fortunes" had an excellent supporting role from Dona Drake. She plays the Spanish spitfire who helps Captain Blood release his mates from prison, and generally steals every scene she's in. The heavy is George Macready. Incidentally he was the heavy in the two Randy Scott westerns I mentioned above.
The second movie is "Captain Pirate", 85 min., color, 1952, directed by Ralph Murphy, who had previously directed them in "The Lady and the Bandit", 1951. "Captain Pirate" is a lively buccaneering programmer with plenty of high spirits. Needless to say, Patricia Medina looks ravishing in Technicolor. Although he never reached the swordsmanship skills of Errol Flynn, the South African Louis Hayward handles his action scenes well enough.
For all of the above, I rate it five stars.
Rousing Adventure Yarn.......2006-06-16
Fortunes of Captain Blood:
Rousing Adventure Yarn WITH LOTS OF ACTION, plenty of sword-play, an excellent cast (Macready, Bedoya, Gilmore) and a marvellous musical score by Paul Sawtell.
Captain Pirate: continued good swashbuckling entertainment in technicolor, Louis Hayward starring in both. Both an excellent opportunity to re-enjoy good cinema entertainment of Columbia's golden B-era of the 40's and the 50's. Should be followed by Cornel Wilde ( A Thousand and One Nights, Bandit of Sherwood Forest), Larry Parks (The Swordsman, the Gallant Blade), Jon Hall (Prince of Thieves -48) and John Derek (Rogues of Sherwood Forest, Mask of the Avenger, Prince of Pirates) and many others.

Go inside John Hampden Randolph's 64-room Nottaway, set on a 7,000 acre sugar plantation, and visit the exquisite Rosalie, built by Peter Little for his 13-year-old bride. Meet the colorful Irish immigrant Frederick Stanton. He became one of the richest men in America and built the five-story Stanton Hall to prove it. And what tour of Natchez would be complete without a look at Dr. Haller Nutt's Longwood, the 100-foot tall octagonal wonder they call "Nutt's Folly"? It's a once-in-a-lifetime grand tour of the Old South's spectacular palaces.

Took a second look.......2007-02-20
I rented this DVD because I was very interested to see how the 3 lead actors played off each other, particularly in light their being, ostensibly at least, such different character types. I'd seen Mike McGlone in Brothers McMullen and She's the One, and then later in the excellent Dinner Rush with Danny Aiello. And James Urbaniak plays the uniquely idiosyncratic lead role amazingly in the seminal independent film Henry Fool, directed by the great Hal Hartley. Finally the least "indie" of the 3, Tony Hale, plays one of the more neurotic characters on one of my favorite (now a "brilliant but canceled") shows Arrested Development and turns in the most realized and comically sympathetic performance in the film.
Although funny and compelling in places, it seemed inconsistent and admittedly I found I was a bit unsure about Fortunes on the initial viewing, but it definitely charmed me into taking another look. And I discovered that what at first felt perhaps more like pacing issues and the absence of the sharp "edginess" that characterizes a lot of independent film, as that certainly is generally what the indie audience comes to see, was actually much more of a studied, subtle exploration of early life crisis and uncertainty. The film is a sort of dark satire but with a lighter touch, resisting the indie urge for grittiness and brazenness in favor of a more supple approach.
The acting is really good (all 3 of the leads as well as a few of the supporting cast - notably the woman who plays the wife, Diana Henry, have terrific comedic and dramatic timing) - subtle like the writing and the overall film - and it's definitely shot very well - it's beautiful to look at for an independent. And the direction of the film brings all the elements together creatively and imaginatively, but again, with a sense of restraint. Getting past the initial sense of deliberateness in the film was a bit like the characters themselves getting past (ie - forced by their uneasiness to get past) their initial, natural cynicism about what a fortune teller has to say in the first place.

Give FORTUNES a Chance.......2006-12-11
This is a small independent film that really -- and unfortunately -- has been under the radar; however, FORTUNES features a terrific cast and an original yet identifiable story line. And the music is really good too. Though its humor may be a bit dry and its action too subtle for some, if your attention span is longer than that of a four-year-old inhaling Halloween candy then this fine movie's true and rewarding qualities will be readily apparent. Give FORTUNES a chance!
Maurice Blanchot and Fortunes.......2006-10-03
Over the course of a weekend, I started reading Maurice Blanchot's The Space of Literature, had a bad case of flu and writer's block, and then watched this movie. Three states of being, three characters, a few fortune cookies... FORTUNES, the movie, ostensibly offered a great escape: a light/dark comedy, full of boys, beer, a dwarf. Just what I needed to shake French postwar criticism, a stalled novel and other pressing issues into oblivion. Instead, my preoccupations immediately took shape around the characters in the movie... biological and existential angst (Phil), the practical and spiritual perils of being an artist (Lewis) and the empty drive for money and acceptance (James). It was only after the movie was over that James' role as the real artist in the picture--filmmaker himself--became clear to me. The clarity came from re-reading Blanchot's concept, "Noli me legere: do not read me." Blanchot says, "No one who has written the work [made the film] can linger close to it. For the work is the very decision which dismisses him, cuts him off, makes of him a survivor without work. He becomes the inert idler upon whom art does not depend." This is James at the end of the film... the only guy of the three who didn't get to sit down in the same space with inspiration (the fortune teller), who, in the end, beats the pavement, effectively homeless (gel-less), glimpsing/misrecognizing inspiration in diner windows... wandering outside the editing booth after the film has been shot, after the work has been written, cut off, a survivor. Bravo FORTUNES!
Strong early work by the "up and coming" ...........2006-06-21
I don't know what the other reviewer is talking about. No, this movie does not have the budget of a big studio film, but that is part of what makes it so enjoyable.
The focus here is on the story and the acting, all of which are successfully represented by an excellent cast, many of whose names have already become more recognizable (Tony Hale), some who were already recognizable (Mike McGlone) and some who hopefully will be more recognizable with deserved work (Diana Henry). These characters are not presented in easy to digest cardboard cutouts. The film actually asks for you to view it complete before making full judgement on the individuals and their choices. Perhaps some people don't have the patience for that and need to have their attention diverted with flashier tricks. Similarly, this is not a movie packed with "jokes," but one where the humor is derived from character and situation. When did these become bad things?
Anyhow, ignore the other review (he doesn't even have the right actors associated with the correct storylines). This movie has plenty to offer, starting with script and following through to it's acting and directing. It's a freshman effort on many people's parts here - all of it encouraging. I look forward to seeing more from this screenwriter and director (as well as the capable cast).
QUITE A MISFORTUNE.......2006-06-02
Here's a movie that is another example of the artistic freedom independent moviemakers make, and how a disregard for sheer entertainment value is abandoned in a sober attempt to exhibit their own "originality." FORTUNES is a dull, tedious movie with a plot so slim and uninteresting as to question why any studio picked it up.
We have three youngish men: Mike McGlone as an investment banker with wandering eyes; James Urbaniak as a corporate husband with a young son; and Tony Hale as a television editor who wants to be a writer. They all stop in to visit a fortune teller on a whim and what she tells Urbaniak and Hale changes their lives. Urbaniak was told that something might happen to his four year old son so he becomes an overly protective, completely fanatical father looking for doom behind every door; Hale quits his job and sits around the house drinking in his bathrobe. Problem is these guys are so obnoxious it's hard to care about them, especially Hale whose withdrawal and self pity only enhances his irritability.
Sloppily filmed and acted, FORTUNES is a real loser.
