Only Werner Herzog could turn the factual story of Invincible into a timeless allegorical fable. This is unmistakably a Herzog film--the director's first narrative feature in a decade--exposing evil in the stage show hosted by the cynical occultist Hanussen (Tim Roth), whose Berlin nightclub entertains Nazi officers on the eve of Hitler's rise to power. This arena of pre-Holocaust amusement is ill-prepared for the disruptive influence of Zishe (Jouko Ahola), a burly Polish blacksmith recruited to play a strongman in Hanussen's act. When Zishe announces his Jewishness to the crowd, thus attracting a Jewish audience to Hanussen's Aryan enclave, his simple act of bravery represents a pivotal affront to Nazi pride, with entirely unexpected results. Finnish body-builder Ahola is Herzog's daring experiment--a nonactor (and it shows) whose likable nature is starkly contrasted with Roth's manipulative malevolence. As Zishe so innocently demonstrates, resistance may be hazardous, but it's not always futile. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

When the coach of Vince Papale's beloved hometown football team hosted an unprecedented open tryout, the public consensus was that it was a waste of time--no one good enough to play professional football was going to be found this way. Certainly no one like Papale--a down-on-his-luck, 30 year-old, substitute teacher and part-time bartender who never even played college football. But against these odds, Papale made the team and soon found himself living every fan's fantasy--moving from his cheap seats in the upper deck to standing on the field as a professional football player.

Walt Disney Pictures scored a surprise box-office hit with Invincible, and the movie deserved its good reviews as a fine example of how above-average writing, direction, and casting can turn formulaic material into something special. And make no mistake, this is a formulaic movie, with its real-life story embellished with Rocky-like enthusiasm, and lovingly crafted with the same quality of working-class humanism that made The Rookie a similarly popular Disney hit. This time, the inspirational true story is that of Vince Papale, a down-on-his-luck substitute teacher in Philadelphia (played by Mark Wahlberg in a nicely understated performance) who was 30 years old, out of work, abandoned by his wife, and biding time as a bartender when he answered an open call for tryouts on the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team in 1976. Going with his gut instinct, new coach Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear) rewards Papale's diligent efforts with a place on the team, and Invincible combines gridiron guts, low-key romance (as Papale meets his future wife-to-be, played by Elizabeth Banks) and blue-collar friendship in an underdog story that moves, with casual charm and abundant appeal, toward a rousing feel-good finish. Making good use of digital visual effects to recreate Philly's now-demolished Veterans Stadium, director Erickson Core (also serving as his own cinematographer) tackles this heartwarming assignment with intelligence and flair, spinning gold from what could have been just another routine sports movie. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Great family fare.......2007-06-22

This is a wonderful film that the entire family can enjoy (without watching a cartoon). It has the further benefit of being based on a real person's life and experience. In some ways it is Dick Vermeil's story as well as Vince Papale's. Both are embarking on long-shot careers. The fact that we know how Vermeil's will turn out provides reassurance that Vince's will turn out well also. A sweet and engaging film about individual aspiration, family, neighborhood, and friendship. Watch it with your kids without any fear of embarrassment. How often can you say that today?

5 out of 5 stars a real good movie.......2007-05-14

this is very serious and true movie. i really enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie.......2007-04-11

This movie will really touch your heart. The scenery, the acting, and the music are all on point. What a great story!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the usual sports saga.......2007-04-02

"Invincible" is a cut above the usual "downtrodden young man achieves the impossible" sports saga. It's the true story of a Philadelphia Eagles fan who responds to the coach's publicity stunt of holding tryouts for his beleagured team. No one expects anything to come of it, but Vince proves to be incredibly fast on his feet, and makes the first cut--and the second, and the third, and eventually the team. He's ostracized by regular team members, and even by some of his buddies back in the neighborhood, who fear they'll lose him to the big time. In his first big play, he blows it--but then makes an incredible play in a later game that wins it for the Eagles. My husband says Vince played for 3 years on Philadelphia's special teams.
This movie paints a real life gritty picture of working class Philadelphia, almost like the first Rocky film. Very suitable for kids without being sappy sweet--my 8 year old grandson thought it was great. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A feel good movie.......2007-03-31

This movie was well done, it builds the problem (a depressed era) and a lack of confidence and shows how one man handles that struggle with the help of his friends and family. A must watch and one that I would recommend purchasing. Then do a look up on Wikpedia to learn more about the man.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT START!.......2007-06-28

I hope to see more Marvel movies like this of all the charactors. This was a good intro to "IronMan" for those who know very little about him or his origin. For those who are VERY familiar with the comic and story it was a little skinny. But all in all it was fun and a good start. Hopefully it is the beginning of many more to come.

2 out of 5 stars Broken Promise.......2007-06-05

Long on story short on action. The other two Avengers movies were put together so well, that it makes for this movie to be a let down.

1 out of 5 stars abysmal........2007-06-05

alot of valid points here already, but, in a nutshell....it's abysmal.

it works, neither as a childs, nor adults, movie.

if you were in any doubt up to this point, rest assured, use your time & money elsewhere.

im a reasonably well read comic book / graphic novel fan & have enjoyed SOME movies in the genre...this being somewhere right down near the bottom.

i lasted 41 minutes. enough said.

3 out of 5 stars Wasn't that good.......2007-05-30

I was disappointed by this film. It starts out great but devolves into a robot bash rock-em/sock-em. The story line is both confusing and not memorable. I watched the movie and cannot remember nothing about it at all. It's really not that good of a film. It could've been much better.

I would not recommend it to anyone but hardcore Ironman fans

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding script.......2007-05-20

I published a little book about Iron Man twelve years ago -- "Exactly 12 cents and Other Convictions" (long past its prime at Amazon, though still listed) -- and have thought quite a bit about the mythos of this character since buying Tales of Suspense 39 new in the drug store forty-four years ago. Notwithstanding the broad range of opinions expressed here by other reviewers, for me the script for this new animated Iron Man feature was unexpectedly superb. Exactly 12 and Other Convictions: Four Imaginary Letters from Paul Davies

3 out of 5 stars Mark Walberg's been better.......2007-03-14

I liked this movie but not completely what I was expecting. It was based on a true story which also made it appealing but I found the story kind of dragged on. The football scenes were amazing though. Really got into the action and let you feel the violence that is professional football.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie and awesome picture and features.......2007-01-06

Movies in high definition are the future. This one was brilliantly made anyways (without the high-definition) and you add in the HD with Blu-Ray and the extra features (documentary on the real Vince Papale) and it just enhances the experience. I saw this at the movies and had to own it. It's inspirational and teaches that you are never too old to achieve your dreams. Definite buy on Blu-Ray or regular DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Chop Socky Classic!!!.......2007-03-14

I originally saw this film as a kid waaaay back in the 80's when my local TV station used to have "Midnite Kung Fu Theatre". As a fan of "Old Skool" flix I was happy when I found this DVD in my local music stores used bin for 5 bucks!!! The print quality is good and is obviously not the cut, full screen TV print. This is proably the best release of this film that you will find, unless some company undertakes a massive film preservation project for this flix. Ignore all the Kung Fu snobs that will complain about slow fight speed or other such B.S. issues and add this to your "old skool" collection.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT OLD SCHOOL FLICK.......2007-02-24

now with all this talent in this movie how can a director, a producer, and choreographer go wrong and they dont but the video asia release has a flaw. the chapter selection feature is all screwed up and the insta action isnt quite accurate ither. but video asia did manage to release to uncut version which is an hour and forty minutes compare to the other past releases who give us an hour and twenty five minutes or so but anyway this flick stars the legendary megakickers john liu and wong jang lee. other talented wonders include yuen biao, lee hoi sang, philip ko fei, corey yuen, tino wong, sonny yuen shun yi, tyrone hsu hsia, wong chi sang, ching kuo chung, and the yuens choreograph the action so it well equipped. this is an adventure action flick so that explains why it is 1 hour 40 minutes long in the original cut. for a movie made in 1977 this has great action this version is definite pick up but bare in mind like i said this is videoasia and it has its flaws and you gotta ask yourself this videoasia release is too good to be true well not exactly just the chapter selection that messed up the flow.

5 out of 5 stars Old "skool" Kung Fu .......2006-05-09

The Kung fu kid is right,,,,there seems to be a mild delay in the fight scenes,,,but WHO CARES. That did not take nothing away from this kick-ass flick,,,I said it before and I'll say it again,,,three words: TOUGH, TOUGH, TOUGH. This flick has to be up there on all of your top 10 best, and don't lie. If this one is not in the collection,,,you're not a true old school nut,,,PERIOD!!! The story nontheless very mundane, but the fight scene is off the hizzel!! If you agree with me on this one,,,I recommend "Mystery Of Chess Boxing" The best ever!!

4 out of 5 stars 5 bucks in the ne and used section, I decided to replace the vid tape and upgrade.......2006-05-06

And man am I glad I got this. This is THE version to get. I mean you have like 2 reviews down there that say the fights are slowed down, and you have another one who says that the release is awesome. So I have come here to set the record srtaight. THE RELEASE IS AWESOME, for videoasia at least. It is widesceened(not all the way of course)and great picture(for videoasia. The colors are nice and rich, they tend to bleed sometimes, and sometimes at the start of the movie, there does seem to be a but of distortion, chioppiness, and shakiness. But like I said, this is a videoasia release and their release of south shaolin master has to take a backseat to this, I had one hell of a good time watching this. And this is how fast Hwang Lee fights people, sorry if it isn't up to today's jet li standards, but the undercranking just isn't used that much, they tried to give you a little more of a real life feeling, sorry, go check out iron monkey 2 or something. I have had many problems with videoasia releases in the past, but after accumulating a total fo 7 dvd palyers, i always get ALL my dvd;s to work, all the time, except that dam doctor wai movie.
It is very possibel if you try it on another palyer, it will run at a normal speed.

Now this movie has many stars and i will try to name most of them, cause by the way this is the uncut version like other people said and you WILL see yuen biao's fight.

So the story is abotu the 3 invincible armour masters I think and john liu(secret rivals, fighting ace) gets framed for murder by Lee Hsoui?? You will recognize this guy as the monk who sort of opposes san te in 36th chamber, he also fought him in shaolin vs. wudang. He is also the guy who is opposite Gung on-hark as whang in-sik's other henchmen in young master, and shaolin traitor who gets killed by ti lung in avenging eagle. He has a really good acting performance in this and they actually fooled me into believing he was a good guy at the start of this. But of course he is not so Hwang lee seng sends Chiang Wang to get John. Adn I gotta say this guy wang di an AWESOME job in this movie. I sually dont; like him. He is in THE greatest chopsticks fight scene eevr from hitman in the hand of buddha, he is the guy who replaced don wong in secret rivals 2, and is teh one who beats up jackie's schol's master in snake in eagle's shadow, and he also gets beat up by jackie in drunken master. His hair is obviously so fake in this but he plasy his character SOOOOOOOO cool. He doesn't smile once, and his fighting is the same stupid style, but I have to sat that i loved him playing this role. So I haev to say that this is not your average Ng-See Yuen release. many people don't know it, but he actually directed many god movies like secret rivals and also this one. You can tell right away that they actually put some money into this flick. All the great sets and, costumes and SWEET wigs are definitely highly unusual for yuen. So the story isn't the shizzle by any means but nam me another white-haired mutant fight than this movie. I'm waiting... When phillip ko and his crane go up against Hwang's eagle, you will definitely have a smile on your face. Best white whair vs. white hair OF ALL TIME.

So the movie starts out a little slow, but at the 1 hour mark, don't plan on moving your eyes for abotu 40 minutes.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent kung fu adventure. .......2005-10-18

The eagle claw combined with the invincible amour is definitely unbeatable this one of Jonh Lui better movies and with a cast with the likes of silver fox this is an entertaining martial art conspiracy, lots of action great technique, lets be real chinese movies is not noted for original creative story lines and great realistic acting skills forget that!!!! if you want a good action pack martial arts movie this will definitely satistfy your taste, one of the best eagle claw techniques diplayed on screen a must to any collector laterz folks.

Shot in black and white, this 1965 Japanese monster movie was the Daiei company's answer to Toho's famous Godzilla series. A skirmish between U.S. and unknown "enemy" planes results in an atomic explosion over the Arctic which unthaws and unleashes the giant flying turtle Gamera, who eventually settles into Japan to wreak havoc while seeking out hydro-electric sustenance. However, this fire-eating (and breathing) behemoth displays a compassionate streak when he saves the life of a young boy who nearly falls to his death from a toppled lighthouse. Panicky scientists and military officials vainly try to find ways to destroy Gamera while the boy seeks to bond with his misunderstood reptilian hero. Like many of its celluloid Japanese monster brethren, Giant Monster Gamera has not aged all that well, but the well-staged and photographed assault on Tokyo makes for festive mayhem. Overall the film is good entertainment for young kids as well as the inner children of the adults who grew up on these monster mashes. --Bryan Reesman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tippy, oh, tippy........2006-10-03

OK, this film was seen on MST3K. So what? I happen to be a fan of the Gamera and Godzilla movies which is one of the reasons I enjoyed watching Joel and the Bots. Gamera The Invincible was made in 1965, in black and white. While being a Japanese movie it has a lot of inserted scenes for the American, English speaking, viewers. Some of these scenes, such as the television debate between two scientists, are funny because in some ways they reflect true life.
Gamera is a fire eating, flying giant turtle from a time before oxygen was used by life. Of course he wakes up from a million (billion) year old sleep by the explosion of an atomic bomb. Dropped by the evil Russians, of course. Anti-war film, anti-atomic weapons, pro-United Nations, pro-turtles, the film can be seen as a support for or against anything. An oldie buy goodie. The first of eight installments. Only eight? How sad. I think he was just as good as Godzilla.

3 out of 5 stars If you only see one space turtle movie this year..........2006-04-19

...make sure it's the one with the brain lusting space girls! But that one is kinda intentionally comic, this is played as straight as a movie about a flying space turtle can be. Minunderstood monster is unleashed from his artic grave when a Soviet fighter is shot down and boom, we get a mushroom cloud. The studio debate between the Gamera-believing mythologist and the skeptical science writer is priceless! "He called me an ape!" "No, I called you an ignorant ape!" Reminds me of the evening talk shows on the cable news fronts...my, how far we've come that the satire still stings. The contrarian Senator brings to mind some of our finest in Washington today, head in the sand all the way. Brian Donlevy makes a convincing general. Writers (and George Lucas) take note...this is how child characters should be scripted for minimum annoyance. And Gamera himself, well, he looks like a man in a rubber turtle costume, but it works all the way to the ending. A unique ending, I might add, saving the Earth *and* leaving the door open for sequels. All in a day's work for...Nizo Takahashi! Doesn't have the same ring as Mighty Mouse *sigh*

3 out of 5 stars I Am Invincible!.......2006-01-25

A flight of Soviet bombers "accidentally" flies over Alaska. U.S. interceptors shoot one of the planes down, causing a low-yield nuclear explosion. The nuclear explosion wakes a giant prehistoric turtle called Gammera by the local Inuit. Gammera attacks a model ship, flaming it with bad breath for good measure. Fortunately, the crew abandoned ship just in time. What excitement! Did I tell you that this turtle is so cool that it walks on two legs? Clever trick for a turtle.

This movie digresses for a while as Gammera is walking or flying in parts unknown. Various characters, including Brian Donlevy as General Terry Arnold and Albert Dekker as the Secretary of Defense, debate the existence of Gammera. This movie is relatively early in the monster genre because, as any self-respecting scientist of today knows, giant monsters exist and they are nearly all genetically programmed to attack Japan for reasons that scientists have yet to discover. Eventually the scientists and authorities bow to the overwhelming scientific evidence (footprints, sketches by small boys, anonymous phone calls, possibly including one from Kolchak, the Night Stalker) and recognize something must be done about this giant menace!

Gammera rescues a small boy (bless the monster's heart) before going off and frying a bunch of people in a Tokyo apartment building (this is one quirky turtle). To prepare for toasting Tokyo Gammera destroys a geothermal plant and chows down on the flames. I guess Gammera likes hot food. Somewhere around this point in the movie a scientist establishes that (drum roll) Gammera is not like other creatures!

The excitement builds as Gammera lands at a totally cool model airport and then begins to stomp around an excellent model of Tokyo. We catch a bit of a song titled "Gammera" that sounds suspiciously (to me) like the theme from the 1960s television series "Batman." It could be coincidence, or not.

Of course there has to be a plan to deal with Gammera, since all attempts to stop him have failed. Enter Plan Z! Before Plan Z we see model trains and a model laboratory and more models of other stuff, and then we see the Plan Z model. Woo hoo! This stuff is great! Of course, I have to leave the suspense of Plan Z to the viewer to discover.

After the success of "Godzilla," other Japanese studios attempted to capitalize on the monster fad. Modern audiences will find this attempt at giant monster horror more humorous than scary given today's sophisticated special effects. However, the models in the movie are excellent, and the laughs this movie generates for adults is worth a watch. Young children, on the other hand, may find this movie frightening (I know I did way back in the 60s), so just because you may not find the movie frightening, do not assume the little ones won't.

They just don't make movies like this any more. Thank goodness for that!

3 out of 5 stars Gammera the Invincible.......2005-09-25

Watching this movie is a trip back to my youth. I used to watch these monster movies late at night on the local TV stations. It is sooooo corny that it is good. If a person did not grow up watching these movies they may not like them. But for those of us in the know they are just plain fun to watch. It is nice to see it on DVD.

2 out of 5 stars DUMB!! But really funny in parts........2005-04-06

The first Gamera/Gammera movie with added American actor scenes. I was bored with the story but not the unintentional laughs. There are some real burst-out-laughing BAD dialogue and crazy scenes in this movie. My fav has to be when the Father orders his son to let go his pet turtle and the Father says,"I know it may seem cruel. It is. But it's for your own good". Thanks for the cruelty Dad! Or when they drop an H-bomb in the artic and free a jet propelled turtle from the dinosaur era, "a missing link to the leather back". Huh?? Ah yes back when turtles flew. Or when they drop an H-bomb in the artic and don't bother to tell the Eskimos anything. They just turn to the Chief and say, "Take care Chief" and they walk away. Maybe they should tell him not to go over there? Only he stops them and gives them a rare Eskimo carving dating thousands of years old depicting a giant turtle and some wavy lines. They look at the rock and babble widly at what the wavy lines mean, only they can't figure them out finally one guys says, "Lets ask the Chief" who's been standing there the whole time and he doesn't know. Sometimes we look back at old movies like this and think, "thats not bad for 1965". Until you remember that DOCTOR ZHIVAGO came out in 1965. I mean GAMERA IS BAD!! BUT in all fairness some of the miniature and monster scenes look great especially in black and white, like the attack on the nuclear power plant is very well done. It's the first ("American" version) of Gamera and therefore collectable. The nineties Gamera films are a 100 times better (although they have their problems too) and I would say forget the old Gamera movies and go with the nineties versions but this is the very first one and on Alpha Video its a very cheap way to pick it up. DVD quality is good enough.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Horrible picture quality does not help out this below average movie. It also doesn't help that it is badly full screened. .......2007-01-26

The movie starts out good enough with Chang Yi playing his usual white haired villain role and makes it clear that he is the king of stick fighters and looks to take down all others. Don Wong Tao plays the young playboy who shows to be a wimp after years of negleting his kung fu practice. When his 3 uncles hear about Chang Yi going around taking down stick schools they send Wong Tao away so that he can learn kung fu and become a man. Wong Chi Sang is good as one of the 3 uncles but the movie is just overall horrible. The comedy doesn't work very well, the fighting is not great, and the story overall is just kind of there and doing nothing until people fight. This movie is actually very similiar to 'Shaolin Iron Claws', only a little bit better and they fight with sticks instead of fighting open handed. After sucking me in with Chang Yi's good polework in his first scene, I had a lot of trouble sitting through the rest of the movie until they finally fight again at the end. This fight I have to say was actually very exciting though very short. It is so good that it almost bumps the movie up to a 3 but the horri-awful picture quality and it's terrible full screen presentation almost makes me give this movie the lowest rating possible of 1 star. Of course the DVD is from Video Asia so I shouldn't have expected too much.

3 out of 5 stars Old "skool' kung fu!!.......2006-06-11

After seeing the hype right here on amazon,,I rushed out to get this flick,,,,,it o.k,,,3 stars at best!! However, grossly over rated in my opinion. Of all the weapons you see in old school kung movies,,,there 's nothing special about stick fighting kung fu!! There 's no question the story is good,,the fight scenes good,,,however, you see one stick fights, and you see them all. Honestly,,after the first stick fight, there were no more suprizes in the flick, it got really boaring and predictable,,it only seemed and feel like the same scenes over and over repeating itself!!

4 out of 5 stars Shaolin Invincible Sticks - .......2005-08-26

Hey, another movie with one of those white-haired villans that must be "ELIMINATED." How did I guess that? Loved this flick also. Fighting scenes "tough" - stick matches "rough" - I can't complain at all. Overdubs - not bad. I can live with some bad overdubs if the flick is "tight."

Watch closely as this white-haired villan goes from school to school challenging and destroying anyone who knows stick fighting. This guy is really good with his stick/pole and it's very difficult for others to beat him. What is kind of bizzare about this one is that anyone who knows stick fighting is his enemy. I like this flick so much that I transferred it to my PDA and watch it sometimes at work. Some of the stick fighting scenes will have you seriously cracking up. You will surely play a few of these scenes over and over again!

By all means please see my other reviews so you won't get stuck with worthless Kung Fu [...] that's not worth the disc it was copied to. The plot keeps you awake throughout! Definetly in my top 5%. You wont go wrong with this one at all.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2006-09-16

When I was a kid, I used to watch this one over and over again. Definitely a great story with interesting plot and very talented stars. A must-see!

4 out of 5 stars I am reviewing the remastered, uncut, letterboxed, english dubbed, red sun version of this 6 venomed classic.......2006-04-26

If you have not heard of red sun and don't have an all region player, than this is THE perfect version.

Now first off it wouldn'tplay in my toshiba dvd player, but worked just fine in my crappy audiovox 5-discer. When the movie starts, you will be in absolute heaven seeing a crisp, clear picture of johnny wang(lung fei) who is playing the evil governor or something that wants to set north and south shaolin against eachother. He comes up with this great scheme to kill the 3 south masters after they have fought. Nobody knows how they died, but REVENGE WILL TAKE PLACE. Now I am a huge fan of all old school kung fu flicks, but I have to say that cheng cheh has made better stuff than this. Not much better but this tries to be mre stright up hard core fighting. No comic book deadly venoms style, or people being crippled and get revenge. The story is just non existent. You find out right away pretty much everthing that is going to happen. And I have to say thaty I love lo meng, but you do have to wonder after like showing about 5 minutes of jst close ups of guys chests, is this a gay movie? But then the training and action scenes happen and you forget all about this. The only thing i can explain this as is that it is cheh's vision. He wants to see the most buff, acrobatic dudes he can find to put on the screen. Cheng Cheh has a great appreciation for manly men. And us men are well represented here. The final fight is kind of like the whole movie, unbelievable. But there are enough deaths to keep any cheh fan happy. And the fighting is justy superb. The training is about as grueling as you are gonna get and it is welll worth it for the final fight, done in the same style that five venoms and return of the venoms was. So you can see that Cheng had it in mind for these 6 guys to be the greatest action stars of all time. It is just a shame that Run Run Shaw wouldn't pay these people because he could have made much better movies than these.

The letterboxed red sun version is perfect and sadly only has english dub but has original soundtrack which surprisingly differentiates from the average music they usually just pull off of the shelf. And to go along with the great picture the sound is a pretty good 2-channel output.

5 out of 5 stars Nice plot that keeps you enticed.......2004-09-12

This movie is one of my favorites.. I have quite a collection and enjoy revisiting Invincible. Won't get into specifics but the fighting matches are awesome.. love the fact that the movie displays a tense and avengeful atmosphere. More importantly, I personally favored the way different styles can be combatted by another this was indeed a Cheh Chang classic. Did I mention the entire 6 venom mob crew are in it !

5 out of 5 stars Another Hit.......2002-06-29

If you like Chang Cheh films, then this is another "must buy". Another political corruption storyline with Wang Lung Wei provoking a destructive confrontation between Northern and Southern Shaolin to do his work for him. The best fights are in the climax when Philip Kwok (formerly known as Kuo Chiu) and his pals match skills against the other Shaolin team. The DVD picture and sound quality aren't bad. More valuable now since the passing of the legendary Chang Cheh.

5 out of 5 stars This Is The Real Stuff.......2002-02-19

A masterpiece of the Venoms era-- matched (not surpassed!) only possibly by Masked Avengers for sheer exuberant heroism and villainy! This is the film that set the tone for so many others-- Evil-general-deceives-rival-kungfu-schools-into-wiping-one-another-out-type-stuff, and is replete with the lengthy, laughable training sequences that made the Venoms famous. You'll never eat scrambled eggs again! So what if it's about as believable as pro wrestling? You get to see bodybuilder/gymnasts somersaulting though Chinese gardens disembowelling one another with amazing weapons, all the while proclaiming their eternal camaraderie!!

Unlike later efforts, this one even features a moving camera, so unlike films such as Masked Avengers, actors aren't forced to stand in tableau looking sideways... they can actually walk around the set-- a bonus! And it's a beautiful, colourful, letterboxed print that appears to have been made from film, and not video. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Description

Based on a true story, this is the compelling tale of a simple Jewish man who leaves his humble village to become a mythical strongman in Berlin.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A FABULOUS FABLE OF TRUTH.......2006-08-30

The Jews believe that each generation 36 Unknown prophets arise to bring God's warnings to the people. Unknown meaning either the prophet is an unwitting tool of God, or knows his vocation but is all but unknown to the rest of the world. In the Glitterati of 1932 Weimar Berliner society, when all manner of decadence rose to the surface and Hitler was trying his hardest to find some theological symbol with which to attach himself as Messiah, he was open to the occult and spent many millions in archeological searches for scripture or other signs which he could manipulate to make his people believe what he was doing was God's will just as another demented leader is doing today. The film is based on the true story of Zishe Breitbart, a Polish Jewish blacksmith's son who becomes a rising star in Weimar, Berlin as a mystical/mythical strongman. His employer (Tim Roth) Hanussen wants to establish an all-powerful Ministry of the Occult in Hitler's government and the strongman Zishe as the Aryan hero Siegfried, amidst his success, makes a moral decision based on prophecies he is receiving from God to become the New Sampson and fearlessly exposes his Jewishness to the demented Nazi crowd. The rest is history romanticized by Herzog. A beautiful, lyrical, poetic film, an epic tale of the signs which some believe God sends, and which the skeptics miss or mock. Roth as always is excellent, as the mysterious and sinsiter Hanussen, who though tinged with avarice and evil, shows a thin streak of goodness. The film should have won awards for cinematography and Original screen play, although there was a book from which Herzog worked. It was, at least, indeed breathtaking and inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated masterpiece!.......2006-08-27

I saw this DVD at the library many times before I actually decided to take it home and watch it. (I think it was seeing something else with Tim Roth that made me decide to get it.) The cover shows a picture of Tim Roth doing a mystical magician type pose and some dice in the background. Never having heard of this movie elsewhere, I assumed that this was some sort of circus/Vegas movie. Hmmm, I guess the joke was on me!

Not only does this movie have nothing to do with Vegas or circuses, but Tim Roth isn't even the star of the show even though he is the only name listed on the front of the DVD! Much to my surprise, this is a story that deals with pre-Holocaust Germany and Jewish persecution in the 30's. It is a story about a Polish Jew who finds his way to Berlin as a strong man working as a sideshow for the "Palace of the Occult." He stands up to the extreme prejudice he is faced with and ultimately becomes an almost cult hero of the European Jews.

The theme of the story really did surprise me, and I must say it was a pleasant surprise. Tim Roth was somewhat misadvertised as the star of the show, but he is terrific as a sleazy scumbag. Although the main character is played by a real "strong man" and not an actor, he is just fine in an endearing role. Because of the story's attraction and intrigue, I was able to overlook some potential weak spots.

Between a wonderful, traitorous villain, and a lovable, courageous hero, the components are there for a movie that will entertain and make you cheer.

4 out of 5 stars Herzog does it again........2006-06-29

Invincible (Werner Herzog, 2001)

Tim Roth may be an incredible actor, but it's Jouko Ahola who steals the show in Werner Herzog's fantastic Invincible. Ahola, as Jewish strongman Zische Breibart, turns in a fantastic performance.

Herzog's fascination with folklore continues. Here, he gives us the story of Breibart, a Polish blacksmith who rises to fame and fortune in deux-la-guerres Germany as a strongman performing in a nightclub owned by Hanussen (Roth). In order to placate his largely Nazi audience, Hanussen bills Breibart as "Siegfried the Iron King" and puts him in a blond wig. Breibart goes along with it until a visit from his younger brother, Benjamin (Jacob Wein), who raises questions in Breibart's mind about his identity as a Jew.

It's a Werner Herzog movie, so quality is to be expected, but this is his best effort since Fitzcarraldo. A wonderful film. ****

4 out of 5 stars Slow, Odd, but Interesting True Story of Nazi-Era Germany........2005-08-09

Zishe Breitbart (Jouko Ahola) is a Jewish blacksmith in a rural Polish village in 1932 when he successfully challenges the Strongman in a visiting circus. A talent agent in the audience proposes that the young man travel to Berlin where there are greater and more profitable audiences for a man of his talents. Once in Berlin, Zishe is employed by Haussen (Tim Roth), an occultist who owns a popular theater specializing in spectacle. Mr. Haussen understands his audience well and strives to show them what they want to see, which at that time was a salve for German egos bruised by World War I and fodder for German egos looking forward to renewed greatness under the rising Nazi tide. Haussen is pleased to add Zishe to his show, but insists that he "Aryanize" himself in order to please and not offend the customers. So Zishe puts on a blond wig and takes on the stage persona of "Siegfried The Iron King", and the audience adores him.

"Invincible" is a true story, written and directed for the screen by Werner Herzog. The story is so odd and obscure that I am not tempted to question its veracity; no one would make it up. It is also an odd enough tale to overcome the film's length and deliberately slow pace. There are long periods of time where nothing happens in this movie. Unless you are fascinated by occultist dinner theater in prewar Germany -which is somewhat cheesy by today's standards- the long stretches where the story just plateaus are likely to wear on your nerves. On the other hand, it is interesting to observe the particulars of these shows and of their audience. They provide some insight into the collective self-image in Germany between wars and how political extremists were able to exploit that to advance their own agendas. The performances in "Invincible" are all impressive. Tim Roth probably doesn't have the screen presence to be a movie star, but he is one of the best character actors in cinema today, and he does some fine work here. I don't know if Jouko Ahola is known at all in Europe, but he embodies this simple but self-possessed Zishe well. Young Jacob Wein also does as nice job as Zishe's younger brother. I recommend "Invincible" if you don't mind slow movies. It's an obscure little story, but it is pretty interesting upon close examination.

1 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Bad.......2005-01-19

The acting and writing is atrocious and I was dumbfounded that some people would rate this movie highly.
The little brother's spoken parts are so British it is laughable and the hero, his brother, has a Scandanavian accent. The main character is no actor and it is embarrassing at times listening to him and watching him. The whole movie is so contrived and corny I gave up watching it more than halfway through. Just because it is based on a real character doesn't make it a good, or watchable movie.

Vegeta, embarrased at his loss, flies off in fury. Piccolo takes off to ask Kame to fuse with him, in the hopes of getting strong enough to defeat the androids. Meanwhile, Krillin and Trunks go to Goku's house, and gather everyone there onto a plane so they can fly to Master Roshi's, in hopes of being safe from the androids. And everyone is in for a shock when Bulma recieves a picture of Trunk's time machine, beaten and old in the woods. Yet Trunks has his time machine right in a capsule in his pocket...

The episodes deserve 4 stars, and the fact that there are four episodes on this DVD bumbs it up to 5 stars. It's always nice having another episode than the usual 3. These episodes aren't bad, but are mostly storyline. However, it does make the viewer tense about the impending android attack, and raises a very important plot point with the discovery of the time machine, one which will extremely change the course of events in the show.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best for action..........2003-02-23

To be honest, you learn A LOT from this DVD in the direction of where the Z soldiers are going.
Piccolo decides to fuse with Kami-Sama, Gokou leaves his home so the androids won't track him, and Buruma learns of another Time Machine!

However, like many DBZ episodes, there's a lot of 'wasting' time in the animation. Lots of panning out and panning in. If you're into animation, this is NOT for you. If you love the DBZ stories, then this MIGHT be for you... what I find quite annoying is that they have to have 3 episodes in order to get from one place to another, whereas they could've done it all in one episode!

Kurirrin again proves to be the guy with all the knowledge! Which is great - I love this character. But then you've got Vegeta who's annoyed he isn't the strongest guy in the universe so he goes on his usual rant...nothing we haven't seen before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good DVD.......2001-11-23

There was much action in the beginning but the rest of the DVD was basically just the Z Fighters worrying about how they're going to defeat the androids. There were some awesome songs in both the English and the Japanese version. I definitely reccomend buying this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars ANDROIDS-INVINCIBLE.......2001-06-20

THIS DVD SHOULD BE SIX STARS. IT IS THE BEST DRAGON BALL Z DVD IN THE WORLD. THIS IS THE DVD WHERE THEY FIND OUT THAT THERE IS ANOTHER TIME MACHINE. YOU NEED TO SEE THE ANDROIDS IN ACTION. LIKE THEM OR NOT THEY ARE AMAZING. YOU NEED TO GET THIS DVD. THE ONLY THING BETTER THEN THIS DVD MIGHT BE THE CONCLUSION TO THE CELL GAMES.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY.......2001-06-18

i've got nothing against vegeta i think he's 1 of the cooler characters in dbz but it's about time someone whupped his a**. plus it was a woman android who broke his arm and she took out the rest of the z fighters that where there except krillin. could something be going on between krillin and an android
