5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2006-01-03

I have been watching and rewatching this film since it was released. This movie became one of my favorites after seeing only the first 30 minutes of it. The story frollows a priest struggling with his own faith as he acts as postulator for the cause of a woman whom the people have petitioned Rome to make a saint. Ed Harris (as Father Shore) was perfect for the part, the viewer truly believes that he is a priest struggling with his faith while being surrounded in a cause for the faith. Anne Heche was also the perfect choice to play the daughter of the woman to be cannonized. If you are looking for a film to lose yourself in and become a part of this is the one.

4 out of 5 stars Great film on Faith.......2005-09-01

How nice to see a film involving priests that show the priesthood and the Catholic religion in a positive light. Great story from a great book.

5 out of 5 stars More than Catholic; and existential exploration of faith and reason.......2005-08-03

I'm Protestant, but this is one of my all-time favorite films. This story, which features a Catholic priest who is struggling with his faith and then must investigate miracle claims of a woman nominated for sainthood, is probably enriching viewing for any Catholic. But Father Frank is representative of people in many faiths and walks of life who must choose what to believe and how to live his life in the midst of tremendous uncertainty and high costs. Does he give up his faith and his life work as a priest because of his uncertainty? Who would he be if he walked away from the faith that has become his whole identity? If he did, would his new secular life be free of the doubt that now agonizes him? If he didn't, would his whole life become a lie? Roxanne, played by Anne Heche, has rejected Catholicism and the memory of her saintly mother, yet also wrestles with doubt, this time from outside the church. Roxanne is a counterpoint and a temptation to Frank, and her own conflict is not fully explored, yet it forms an important context for Frank's choices and what they do and do not promise him.

As someone outside the Catholic church, this film does two things for me. First, it makes me think about my own journey of faith. What do I believe, what do I reject, why, and what price would I pay for my convictions? But it also makes me think about Catholicism, the similarities and differences with my own faith, and why I understand that Catholic church and its doctrines the way I do.

Although the plot and the central conflict of this film are heavily Catholic, the strength of this film is in its fine character acting and the integrity with which it explores the struggle with faith, reason, and identity. If these are ideas that matter to you, or if you wonder what it might feel like to be the kind of person to whom they do matter, this is an interesting and valuable film. The religious themes are unique, honest, and spiritual, without being proselytizing or heavy-handed. A good film for anyone who enjoys being reflective about faith, whether or not they are among the Catholic faithful.

5 out of 5 stars too good to miss.......2005-07-31

This movie is a well-kept secret!! This is not an action movie. People are not shot up and cars blown up. There is no sex. This is just a great movie with some of today's finest actors/actresses. Ed Harris, a priest and postulator for the Catholic Church, is sent to review a woman's candidacy for sainthood. He must verify that she performed 3 miracles. The audience sees the good and bad sides of the Catholic Church. Harris, who is struggling with his own faith, is only able to verify 2 miracles until he and the audience realize at the end that this woman has been responsible for a third miracle, that of restoring his faith and purpose for living. Anne Heche is excellent as the woman's daughter.

5 out of 5 stars saints can be incomodating.......2005-04-06

Over all in our modern society, thirsty of things made easy. This movie is very interesting as it deals with a main theme and some derivations of it: do exists the saints truly? There are people capable to do miracles? And if yes: are a saint those people we usually know as a good person in ordinary life?
For me, the film answers yes, there are saints around us, but... they are worrying, preoccupant people, as they don't observe a regular way of life. And this is so for ordinary people but also for official Church, in this case Catholic.
In effect, it's said a woman has detained a bombardment over Central Europe during WW II. She emigrates later to the USA and she is responsible of one or two unexplainable healings, but she abandons his family. Father Frank Shore is in charge to investigate the truth of these facts, but summing up, modern consumer society isn't the best environment for saints and miracles, and Shore is plenty of doubts about his own faith. He's too much humane and so, likes to drink and likes women. Devil's advocate comes from Europe: he's a German cardinal, a cultivated and elitist intellectual, but over all, he conserves in his memory things nobody knows excepting himself, but the case is as he says. "these miracles aren't convenient for the Catholic Church" Today we have times to be reasonable, miracles are bad to reveal to the public. But each one of us aren't the public in mass, and so we can extract our own individual conclusions. That's difficult, against the current cinema of today that uses to be too much easy and banal.

When Principal Prickly's car gets stuck in a snowdrift, he and passengers Miss Finster and Miss Grotke reminisce about the good and bad aspects of their students, segueing nicely into episodes from the animated television series. These include Detweiler's stint as principal for a day, the gang's rivalry with the Ashleys during the Thanksgiving can drive, and the elderly Miss Finster's surprising luau weekend with Spinelli. The final story centers on Mikey's faltering efforts to prove Santa's existence to his friends. James Earl Jones voices the wise old-timer who may change everyone's mind, and Robert Goulet provides Mikey's singing voice during his solo of "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas." The kids wrap things up with an unsentimental version of "Jingle Bells, Christmas Smells." Parents who want their children to believe in Santa might want to avoid this holiday offering, as the pro-Santa resolution may be too subtle for the young ones. (Ages 5 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

Share a hilarious and joyous holiday with the Recess kids, as they convince the Third Street Elementary School teachers that miracles really do come true at this special time of year. When Principal Prickly's car gets stuck in the snow, he unfairly blames the Recess gang. And after a surprise rescue frees the stranded trio, they're treated to a special Recess rendition of "Jingle Bells" to get them in the holiday mood.
This delightful movie features the impressive voice talents of Dick Clark, Robert Goulet and James Earl Jones in a holiday adventure that reveals the Santa inside everyone.

3 out of 5 stars "Recess" is radical!.......2005-01-23

"Recess-School's Out" was really pretty awesome, & although I never saw the Christmas version, I'll bet that it was also very charming, in a sense.-Earl

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2003-10-20

I loved this movie it was very funny and entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Want to ruin Christmas for your 5 year old ???.......2003-06-22

Then make your children watch this movie . The last segment of this movie will forever alter your child's perception of Santa's existence . If you want to treasure the last few years of your child's innocence ,then protect them from watching Recess Christmas. I found the movie entertaining , but the way they presented the doubt about Santa really caused problems for my 5 year old.... We watched the movie last night and today my 5 year old is still asking questions. Should have carried a warning for parents.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Christmas story with James Earl Jones as Santa.......2002-08-02

This is a fun Christmas tape for fans of Recess. I think the last story featuring James Earl Jones as Santa was quite touching and funny. At least one other reviewer, who said there was "no Christmas content" on the tape, must not have actually watched it. I guess technically some of the material comes from the episodes they have produced but unless your child has taped every episode this is unlikely to be redundant in your collection.

2 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2002-01-09

I wish I had read everyone elses' reviews before buying this. I saw the dvd out and was so excited about getting it for Christmas. As soon as it started I knew it was going to be "flashbacks" of episodes that were already on TV. And none of them had anything to do with Christmas. The only bonus on the DVD was the reports done by Gus, Spenelli and Mickey (I love Mickey). They were very funny but not worth the money.
