Screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin (author of the fanciful Ghost) made his directorial debut with this more serious confrontation with the realities of death. Michael Keaton plays an advertising executive who learns he is dying even as his wife (Nicole Kidman) is pregnant. The film beautifully focuses on his anger over everything: the unfinished business of his life and the probability he'll never meet his child. The late Dr. Haing S. Ngor (The Killing Fields) is terrific as a doctor who helps Keaton's character to recognize the corrosiveness of his rage and to let go. The film is a heartbreaker but truly cathartic for anyone who has felt the blunt pain of losing someone close. Keaton is outstanding. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Kathy is A-List all the way! .......2007-07-03

Season One of "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" is finally available, and the nice folks at Bravo have even gone the extra mile to tack on "Kathy Griffin is...Not Nicole Kidman" which is a stand-up special from 2005. I don't know what I've enjoyed more! Kathy is so quick and so impulsive, even the members of "Team Griffin" it seems are often surprised at how funny she is when she's not even trying. Even her stand-up special is so original and unscripted, it's like watching one big improvisational conversation, between Kathy and her audience. My only gripe is that the Bravo people found it necessary even here on its DVD release, to 'bleep' the explatives like they do for the TV broadcasts. While it might be a bit more family friendly, Kathy's cusses make it all the more chuckle worthy. (***Check out Kathy's DVD "Allegedly" for more uncensored laughs than you can handle. ***) All in all, it's a great DVD. Looking forward to Season 2 of My Life on the D-List. Thanks for all the laughs Kathy!

5 out of 5 stars She is just the BEST.......2007-07-01

I love Kathy Griffin and I love this show. I really want a deluxe set with all three seasons and the specials included. I also want the show to last all year long and air three hours a day. What I really want is all Kathy, all the time.

I am a happily married heterosexual woman. My husband loves her too! She stops at NOTHING for a laugh. I want to be her when I grow up. Even though I am several million years older than she is already.

5 out of 5 stars She Is So "A" List!!! .......2007-06-22

Ok, Kathy Griffin is not for EVERYONE. However for those of "US" she is for, there is just NO one that will make you laugh harder! Kathy has that special way of telling her stories and her observations are keen and whitty. No one is "safe" (including Kathy herself) from her stories and she finds humor in it all. Can't wait for season 2 on dvd. (and you can watch season 3 on bravo Tuesday nights all summer.....Ok kathy...you OWE me Girl!)

5 out of 5 stars IF YOU DONT LOVE IT....YOU CAN SUCK IT & HERE's WHY..........2007-06-22

Well i was on holiday in LasVegas when i got hooked on this show. And as soon as i got home, i was desperate for a DVD! Having bought the chokkingly funny 'Allegedly' , i couldnt wait to get my hands on Kathy's D-List life!!!OMG!
The wonderful, beautiful & extremely witty KG invites us into her hectic life (D-List). Its pee-extractingly funny! With generous dvd extras!
From the dorky ex-husband, to the slave driven PA, to the laugh a minute parents,,,Kathy's D-list life makes a great show and an extremely hard act to follow!

She is a genuine, comedy genius! Who is quite literally not fully appreciated in her own time.
I love her! And you will too,,,so buy this DVD NOW!!!!

5 out of 5 stars FROM ONE REALITY SHOW HATER TO ANOTHER, THIS SHOW ROCKS...!!!.......2007-06-15

The one thing that's always bugged me about reality TV, is the fact that most of it looks staged ("Gee, I think, for no readily available reason, I'm gonna take off my cloths and jump into this public swimming pool...") but that is the one thing that grabs you from the get go in this show, is that Kathy Griffin seems so frazzled most of the time (what with her self proclaimed D-list status, making her do twice the amount of work, for half the recognition) and doesn't really seem to notice the camera invasion, about 95% of the time (the other 5% has her playing to the camera like any comedian worth their salt would, being as cuttingly insightful as she can be, and ripping on anyone she can get her mind around, including, herself).

It's GREAT to finally get the whole first season (with the second to follow, fingers crossed) on DVD, as here in Canada, it was next to impossible to find it's air time on the station that was broadcasting it, and as a result, I only managed to see an episode and a haf of the show, but what I did see was a funny, oddly cute, but also vulnerable, side of Kathy Griffin ("don't call me GIFFORD!!!") that wasn't so much evasive (as most reality TV tries to be) but more documentaries, in a wholly entertaining and unabashed look into this funny lady's hectic life.

Just a note, yes the censor bleeps are still there, but in all reality, I think it adds to the hilarity of the show (kind of like Yo' Semity Sam, from the Buggs Bunny Show, when he'd curse under his breath, you couldn't quite make out what he was saying, and that only made it all the more funnier).

Or is it just me?

Falling neatly into the Enchanted April and Under the Tuscan Sun category, the made-for-HBO My House in Umbria boasts lovely Italian vistas and comforting Englishness. But it begins with a note of violence: on a train rolling through the sunny countryside, a terrorist bomb detonates, killing a handful of passengers. The strangers that survive recuperate at the villa of an eccentric but kindly romance novelist, also a survivor of the blast. She's played by Maggie Smith, who bustles through the role with a pleasing mix of gin and daffodils. Chris Cooper is an uptight American who comes to the villa to pick up his orphaned niece and bristles at the bohemian atmosphere. Director Richard Loncraine maintains the melancholy mood amidst the sun-dappled gardens of Umbria, but Smith really holds the film together with her authority and slightly tipsy humor. --Robert Horton

Description

Based on the acclaimed novel by William Trevor, My House in Umbria is a charming, evocative drama about a group of travelers in Italy who find solace and friendship after being thrown together by tragedy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A multistory level story of healing to delight for the whole family.......2007-06-08

This movie has wonderful, lovable characters that take you through joy, sadness, hope, challenge and especially teamwork with caring....setting is beautiful, Maggie Smith her gorgeous best.....it is the kind of story that could motivate some wonderful family discussions albeit with some difficult and some lovely themes and topics....I have given it to many people for gifts...one set of grandparents who have experienced a granddaughter muted by loss to another friend who consulted on the garden at my new house. A very highly recommended movie.

5 out of 5 stars The woman is awesome..........2007-05-26

Maggie Smith lovers should not be without this HBO film. Age cannot hamper nor time diminish the beauty of this woman and her work. The story conveys the richness of rising above pain by giving as much love and understanding as one can in return. Supported by a superb cast, the film encompasses mystery, humor and pathos, not to mention the beauty of the landscape. Maggie rules!

2 out of 5 stars Nonsense in Umbria.......2007-04-12

Maggie Smith is a wonderful actress and the Italian scenery is photographed to a luminous perfection, but the storyline of My House in Umbria is an exasperating mess. As the grande dame romance novelist with a dark past and a relentless imagination, our heroine makes a sloppy but sometimes piercingly insightful drunk: a complex and comprehensible character, a woman to be wary of. This marvelous mystery lady is even surrounded by a fine ensemble cast. But all these interesting actors are cast adrift in an unfinished plot hinting at complications it hasn't any idea what to do with. You're set on edge for some elusive explanation that they never get to. Just when you were convinced it didn't matter any more they toss you an extra clue or two, and then finally they expect you to be charmed by an off-camera change of heart in the cold American uncle who has never given the slightest indication of being thawed out by the warmth of either Italy or the lady of the house, such an unbelievable turn of events that you expect her to awaken from a dream so you can find out what really happened. Again and again I had to ask myself, Are these really the facts of the story? Or are we just muddling about in her imagination? And of the whole movie: Are we really expected to take this immense display of sentimentality at face value? Or is there an undercurrent here that would make sense of it all if they would just get to the point? Unfortunately these questions were never reasonably answered.

1 out of 5 stars My House in Umbria.......2007-04-10

DVD would not play. DVD stuck and would not go forward.

4 out of 5 stars Cheers Maggie.......2007-03-30

This is a classic Maggie Smith, with a very brave protrayal of her charachter. The plot moves about, but you slowly begin to realize that her character is narating to you and bringing the other characters to life.
Not that you would need help. If you are a Maggie Smith fan... and it's why I bought the movie.... you will not be disapointed. It's one of her best if you wan't a taste of Maggie.

The panorama of 20th-century Chinese history swirls past two men, celebrated actors with their own decidedly specialized view of things. We first observe their lives as children at the Peking Opera training school, a brutal and demanding arena for future actors. While still in training, the effeminate Douzi is chosen to play the transvestite role and the masculine Shitou is chosen to play the royal role in a ritualized play about a king and a concubine. The actors are so good at this performance that they become identified with these roles for their entire careers; through World War II, through the takeover by the Communists, through the insanity of the Cultural Revolution, they are known for their famous parts. Leslie Cheung and Zhang Fengyi are powerful as the two men, and Gong Li (the beautiful leading lady of Raise the Red Lantern) plays the wife of the latter. The movie may be stronger on good old-fashioned melodrama than on profound conclusions, but boy, does it fill up the eyes. The director is Chen Kaige, one of the most talented members of China's "Fifth Generation" of filmmakers, whose daring subject matter (and sometimes bald international ambitions) have often irked the Chinese government. Indeed, though Farewell My Concubine shared the top prize at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival and snagged two Oscar nominations, it had difficulty gaining official approval from China. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Epic on any scale.......2007-06-11

Having been told for a few years that this is a film I "must see", I finally decided to check it out.
As others have noted, this film is long; my copy clocks in at 172 minutes. However, I did find that any section was weak or dragged on. For me, it was the brilliant performance by Leslie Cheung as Cheng that kept the film centered. As the violent political atmosphere of China from 1924-1977 throws danger and traps in his path, Cheng clings to and embodies the spirit of the opera. His obsessive nature serves him on his climb to fame and in the end destroys him. Cheung's performance is incredible and I will certainly be watching more of his films.
I thought Gong Li's performance was impressive as well. With one look, she is able to convey crushing disappointment and hopelessness. It is heart wrenching.
I thought Zhang Fengyi's Xiaolou was a little uneven. His transformation from beginning to end rang a little false and, from what I could understand, didn't quite fit the "King & Concubine" theme running through the film. I did think, however that Cheng and Xiaolou were interesting contrasts and helped add that touch of melodrama.
Great film and one I will be watching again.

5 out of 5 stars $9.99 English only subtitles.......2007-06-05

There are no Chinese subtitles for this Chinese film in this dvd edition. This film is still the director's best so far and from the opening scene of Leslie's assailed posture and his hero's cautious interacton with the unseen petty authority, I felt immediately sad. This is a good story and a well made film but it is also so Chinese with the added element of having the perspective of a Chinese outside of the Mainland, the author. In this way, the Chineseness of the film is more intense. I don't regret paying $7.50 for this film even though there are no Chinese subtitles or any special features whatsoever. This film deserves commentary and cast interviews.

4 out of 5 stars good movie, but sad.......2007-05-16

This was a good movie, but sad. I think the acting in it was very well done. Its not something you want to watch everyday, highly depressing ending, but worth your time.

4 out of 5 stars A Chinese "Gone with the Wind" Epic.......2007-05-14

Great epic saga set on the backdrop of the political and cultural upheavals of 20 century. Excellent but don't start this movie unless you fresh and prepared for a long show.

3 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, but a good film..........2007-05-12

Since I watched this movie for Gong Li, I wasn't pleased that it took her a while to appear in the film. However, the story kept me interested as I waited for her. I can't lie and say that I didn't fast-forward some parts here and there that didn't seem terribly relevant to the plot, considering it's long running time overall. I was happily surprised by the bond/love shared by the two male characters since childhood. When you read that there's a love triangle and you see that there are two men and one woman, one usually assumes that both men will be in love with her. So again, I was pleasantly surprised with that angle of the film. And being a gay-rights activist, I enjoyed the hints of homosexuality in the movie (though I would've liked to see even more of it). Anyway, the movie's filled with history and emotions. I'd watch it again.

5 out of 5 stars Family drama.......2007-05-30

I loved this movie and have seen it five times. It charts the generations of a hispanic family in Los Angeles and gives a rich insight into Mexican culture. It's funny, sad, absorbing, and very well acted. For anyone interested in Mexican culture, it's a "must see", and would be especially interesting to anyone living in Los Angeles.

5 out of 5 stars Review for "My Family".......2007-05-13

Not only was this film well done and very entertaining, it was perfect for use in my "Racial, Ethnic, & Gender Relations" course at a local community college.

5 out of 5 stars My Family - Mi Familia.......2007-03-15

If you are Mexican American or Latino for that matter and were born and raised in California, then you can definately relate to this great tale. And for those of you, any race, who are family oriented, or were born to a big family then this movie is for you too. My Family if a wonderful demonstration of how families have unconditional love for one another, stick together, and are proud of each other matter what. It also shows the struggles of immigrant parents coming to our great country to make a better life for their family. This movie has it's comedy, drama, and action beautifully orchestrated, and also a great soundtrack. This movie is a must see by all.

5 out of 5 stars great history of Latios in South West America.......2007-01-09

This movie is a great example of what life was like over the last couple centuries for those Latios living in the South West region of the United States. Some of who without moving went from being Mexicans to living in a new country without the benefits of being a citizen. A great example of the struggles raising a family during that time.

5 out of 5 stars Mi Familia.......2007-01-04

One of the best Latino oriented films i've seen besides 'Selena' and 'La Bamba'. The story is very good and the movie is nice to see especially if you're a Latino. It's been a movie i can enjoy with my family, which is very rare. The DVD features aren't much, but I recommend that people see this movie.

A rare and harsh gem of a film, Mi Vida Loca tells the story of young Hispanic women in Los Angeles and the struggles they have in a life of gangs, drugs, and personal betrayal. Mousie (Seidy Lopez) and Sad Girl (Angel Aviles) are best friends from childhood, growing up in gang-infested Echo Park and remaining loyal to each other. But when Sad Girl sleeps with Mousie's boyfriend (a drug dealer who is killed) and becomes pregnant, their friendship is ruptured. As the violence of their neighborhood erupts around them, they must try to stay together as friends despite their betrayals. This is an unforgiving look at a world where women seem to have no choice but to raise their children, deal drugs, and survive by whatever means necessary. Director Allison Anders (Gas Food Lodging) structures the film as a series of unflinching and vivid anecdotes, bringing insight to a tragic side of modern society. --Robert Lane

The son (Chris Makepeace) of a hotel manager (Martin Mull) finds himself the target of the school bully (Matt Dillon, in his breakthrough movie role). So he makes an offer to a school outcast--the biggest kid in class (Adam Baldwin), who reputedly has actually killed someone. He'll pay him to be his bodyguard against the bully. But the business arrangement turns into friendship, even as the smaller boy learns his new friend's secret shame. The first film by director-producer Tony Bill, this one comes down a little too heavily on the feel-good notes (and includes a gratingly precious appearance by Ruth Gordon in her lovable eccentric mode) but works because of strong performances by its young cast. --Marshall Fine

Description

After years of being sheltered in private school, Clifford Peache (Chris Makepeace) finds life difficult at his new Chicago high school where a tough-talking bully (Matt Dillon) and his pals regularly extort students lunch money. Refusing to pay up, Peache hires a bodyguard-the intimidatingly large class misfit (Adam Baldwin) whose rumored violent behavior is legendary. Though everyone else is afraid of him, Peache strikes up a friendship with the troubled loner. Their deepening relationship and unified stand against the thugs manages to rouse the entire school.

5 out of 5 stars NOT JUST ANOTHER "HIGH SCHOOL BULLY" MOVIE!.......2007-06-28

This film is much deeper than the title would lead you to believe. A well crafted story and really good characters make this an engrossing little film. You will see young Matt Dillon,Joan Cusack and Adam Baldwin, plus Ruth Gordon and Martin Mull. My Bodyguard is an exceptional film and should not be missed.

5 out of 5 stars On Bullies, Bodyguards, and an Unexpected Friendship.......2007-06-18

This flick was filmed in Chicago. It co-stars Joan Cusack as a high-school sophomore. (In time, she starred in many other roles, and is well known for her phone commercials).

High schooler Clifford Peach, accustomed to a sheltered background, is bullied by Moody and his crew. He is extorted, teased, tripped, and once blindfolded and forced into a locker. At another time, garbage is thrown on his clothes in his locker. The principal is of minimal help.

Clifford attempts to hire John Linderman, a tall fellow, as a bodyguard, but the latter isn't interested. But, gradually they open up to each other, and become friends. Clifford locates a cylinder that enables Linderman to finish his home-built motorcycle. They go on rides together. In time, Linderman relates a horrible personal secret to Clifford.

There is place for humor in this film. They use a telescope, in Peach's hotel room, to look at heavenly bodies. But these are not celestial objects. They are women in tall buildings located some distance from the hotel.

Clifford has conquered his problem with bullies--or so it seems. But if Clifford can get a bodyguard, so can Moody, his old nemesis. And so there is the inevitable fisticuffs between the bodyguards. How will it end?

4 out of 5 stars My Bodyguard: Social Class, Inner City School Environments, and Personal Growth.......2007-05-09

The movie is well done with a fine cast. What makes it unusual is the manner in which it deals with some fundamental elements in the "coming of age process." One of the themes one can chart throughout a life cycle is the evolution of the concept of power. One finds that in the elementary grades where power is physical and individualistic. The mindset atthis point is "whose the tuffest kid in the class." As one moves towards high school the notion of power becomes redefined into a more social framework such as team sports (football, basketball, etc.). It still deals with the physical domain of power, but more social (team efforts sanctioned by the institutional structure, i.e., the school). However there is a class divide that exists within the schools. Those who come from middle class families are more readily moved forward towards college and the professions. Those who are disenfranchised do not. The realization of this on the part of the disenfranchised can lead to hostility expressed in the form of physical threats. This is the nub of the movie. A bright student comes to an inner city school and finds himself the target of a formidable group of bullies. Realizing that he is no physical match he decides that the way to deal with this delemma is trump his tormentors by finding someone even more menacing. At first the potential bodyguard is reticent and dismisses the offer, but eventually the two are drawn together by circumstances and become friends. The result of the friendship is the focus of the movie: the evolution of each of these characters as a result of their interaction with one anther. Needless to say, the bullies are vanquished in the end and the two main characters (the "geek" and his bodyguard)continue to evolve well beyond the point of their first encounter. The movie is also a bit unusual in the sense that it treats the psychological motiviation of the "bodyguard" at a deeper level that one might expect from a teen movie. It's well done and the cast is excellent with a story told in a very believable fashion.

5 out of 5 stars My Bodyguard.......2007-05-07

I've always liked this movie. The best thing is, the bullies finally get it in the end! It makes you remember that the fear itself is usually worse than the thing you have been fearing, and that if you don't contront your problem at some point, it will never get any better. And you might just find out some things about yourself.

5 out of 5 stars "Without the bike. It's Moody's now".......2007-03-31

I remember liking this movie when it came out when I was a kid, but it wasn't until I saw it many years later as an adult that I really appreciated it. Aside from the great acting by all the kids and classic lines, what I like most about it is that it's actually realistic and believable. The look on Clifford's face when he realizes he's offended Moody with his "BM" joke is priceless. Even the fight scenes are pretty realistic, not like most fight scenes where a guy takes 30 punches (with obligatory punch sound effects) straight to the face and then isn't even bleeding. I thought the little punk whacking rocks with a 2x4 in the vacant lot next to Linderman's house was a nice touch. Matt Dillon was great(possibly his greatest performance to date) and my friends and I still quote lines from Mike to this day (e.g. "You're really beginning to annoy me"). I thought Mike's 'towel around the neck tucked in to his sweatjacket' look at the end was pretty funny. Was he training up there? Or maybe sparring with Moody's buddies? What ever happened to Mike? I can't believe he didn't get more work after that performance. All in all, a great movie. A classic.

Faced with not graduating unless he completes his science project, a high school gear-head sneaks into a nearby Air Force base, looking for some gizmo he can pass off as his own invention. What he finds is an alien energy device that rips holes in both time and space, infesting the school with everything from dinosaurs to the Viet Cong. Writer-director Jonathan Betuel tries to mine some of the same veins as Weird Science and Real Genius (all three films were released in 1985) but with less success--mostly due to a slapdash script. The film veers from being The Breakfast Club to WarGames to Rambo, leaping over plot holes all the way. As the hero, John Stockwell is too low-key for his own good, but Danielle Von Zerneck is appealing as his emerging love interest, and Fisher Stevens and Raphael Sbarge do their best to inject some life into the material. Dennis Hopper (as a hippie-dippie science teacher) chews the scenary with gusto--and at one point shows up wearing the costume he wore in Easy Rider. --Geof Miller

Description

His high school teacher issues an ultimatum: Turn in a science project or flunk. So Mike Harlan (John Stockwell) scavenges a military base's junk pile for a suitable gizmo. He finds one ... and unwittingly unleashes the awesome power and energy of the unknown. Twisted dimensions. Time warps. A fantastic realm where the past, present, and future collide in a whirling vortex of startling adventure and superlative special effects!

I have seen this this movie when i still was under 13 years of age. Since I have a DVD Player I was looking for this movie on a DVD. The movie is funny, good sound and a lot of good jokes.

5 out of 5 stars Another Classic and MUST SEE.......2007-02-08

Yeah it ranks up there with the WRAITH-however doesn't have the same caliber actors. Still it doesn't let you down! All teh great 80's styles can be seen in here from clothes to hair and personality. You have the gear head who is TOTALLY into his car that ends up being the hero with his NY accented sidekick who adds colorfully to the comic relief.

A FAVORITE of mine, though not as popular as Weird Science. I don't care-it is just as good!

3 out of 5 stars enjoyed it.......2006-10-14

A comforting reinforcement of American archetypes, and fun too. Watch as muscle-car drivin', beer drinkin' children kill a gladiator, beat charlie, and kill a dinosaur.

I will actually watch anything with Dennis Hopper in it. He gets to say 'Woodstock, Oinker!'

3 out of 5 stars "Is this like when you told us we could smoke banana peels?".......2005-01-05

If I recall correctly, the last science project I did in school involved using a potato, nails, and a couple of pennies to make a kind of battery... okay, so I never threatened to disrupt the space/time continuum with my potato battery, but it was still pretty cool...My Science Project (1985), written and directed by Jonathan Betuel, who had a seemingly very short career in Hollywood writing 1984's The Last Starfighter and then sort of falling off the face of the Earth after his 1995 flop Theodore Rex, starring Whoopi Goldberg (she really has the Midas touch, but instead of turning things into gold, they turn into cr@p). Starring in the film is John Stockwell (Losin' It, Christine), Danielle von Zerneck (La Bamba), and Fisher Stevens (Short Circuit, Super Mario Bros.). Also appearing is Raphael Sbarge (Vision Quest, Carnosaur), Richard Masur (Risky Business), Barry Corbin (Stir Crazy), Ann Wedgeworth (Love and a .45) and Dennis Hopper (Blue Velvet).

The film begins with scenes at a U.S. air force base, circa 1957, and the decision, of the highest authority, to cover up a mysterious UFO that was found crashed nearby. The story then moves to the present (1985 being the present), where we meet Mike Harlan, a high school student and motor head (that's someone who's really good with cars), eagerly awaiting to graduate, but finds himself in the predicament of having to come up with a science project, or else his science teacher, Bob Roberts (Hopper) won't pass him. He scavenges the local junkyard (which used to be the air force base in the 50's), and comes across a strange, glowing thingy (all that was left of the UFO) and decides to try and pass it off as his project. Only problem is the strange thingy begins feeding on various power sources (Hey, let's hotwire it into an electrical outlet!), and soon begins creating trans-dimensional rifts in time and space, causing different time periods (the past, present, and future) to co-exist, along with drawing his science teacher into the subsequent vortex (I wonder how that will effect his chances of graduating). Will Mike and his friends be able to stop the alien thing-a-ma-gig from tearing the very fabric of the space/time continuum a new one?

My Science Project is one of those films from the 80's of which I had fond remembrances (much like Night of the Comet, which, as I write this, has still to make an appearance on DVD). While some of those films haven't held up as well watching them some 20 years later, for me, this one has...it's funny, engaging, and visually entertaining. Keep in mind this isn't a movie where the characters travel through time, but one where elements from different time periods appear in their reality. The casting is very well done, especially with Stockwell (who appeared earlier as Arnie's jock friend Dennis in John Carpenter's killer car film Christine) as the lead character of Mike, a seemingly single-minded fellow (he cares more for his red GTO muscle car than he does for relationships with people) finding there's more to life than carburetors and spark plugs (is it me, or does Stockwell seem to have just a really huge forehead, certainly more than the average person). Danielle von Zerneck (her most famous role probably as Ritchie Valens girlfriend Donna in 1987's La Bamba) also does well as Mike's would be girlfriend, a nerdy, bookish character who learns there's something to be said for living life outside her books. And Hopper as the hippy-ish science teacher seems a no brainer, obviously utilizing his past experiences to our benefit. The only character I didn't care much for was that of Vince Latello (Stevens), the stereotypical greasy Italian friend of Mike's. He was obviously the comic relief, and you will either love him or hate him, but I thought Stevens' performance a little too over the top for my tastes, and ultimately distracting. In case you're not familiar with Stevens, his sort of ambiguous ethnicity allows him to play many different kinds of characters, including his role as the Indian inventor in the 1986 Steve Guttenberg/Ally Sheedy film Short Circuit. The direction was strong, as Betuel manages to juggle a decent story with a few subplots well, keeping my interest throughout, and also throws in a couple of references, one to Stockwell's earlier film Christine, and one with Hopper's character showing up wearing the same outfit he wore in Easy Rider. He also develops the characters enough to get some of them (the important ones, at least) past the realm of being two-dimensional. I thought it kind of strange that he should have so little in the way of other credits to his name, as he shows here he can not only direct a film well, write a decent story. The special effects looked really good for the time it was released, and even hold up well to today's standards. I especially liked the Tyrannosaurus Rex in the school gymnasium, although it's no match for Spielberg's creation in Jurassic Park, it was still done well. They did tend to use the swirling vortex above the school a bit much for my tastes, but that's a relatively minor point.

The widescreen (2.35:1) picture, released by Touchstone, on this DVD looks pretty good, but there are a few, minor flaws, and I thought the audio a bit soft. There was an earlier release by Anchor Bay that featured both widescreen and full screen formats, but no full screen here. There are no special features available, not even a trailer, so given the lack of effort in the release, I have to go with three stars.

It is down to the line and if you do nit come up with a good science project you can kiss you high school diploma good by. What luck a nearby abandoned military depot. You guessed it an alien engine is just waiting for the application of a little electricity.

This is what happened to a young lad, Michael Harlan (John Stockwell.) With the help of his friends he discovers new dimensions. There is time enough for adventure and time enough for love Ellie (Danielle von Zerneck.) A vortex sucks up the science teacher. And everyone is threatened. Only the original hand full of friends can curb the problem by fighting their way back in over numerous obstacles to remove the source of energy to the engine.

Can they curb the power before it is too late?
Will we ever see the science teacher again?

4 out of 5 stars It's not a masterpiece but it is good fun.......2007-05-12

`My Chauffeur' is a better than average comedy from the mid 80's that deserves its time in the spotlight. Even though it can be regarded as a cult classic these days, that's okay because it is still as funny now as it was then. Despite what it may look like on the outside, this isn't a chick flick and it can be enjoyed by everyone in general.

Casey Meadows (Deborah Foreman of `Valley Girl' fame) becomes the first woman to ever drive for the exclusive and male dominated Brentwood Limousine company. She definitely knows how to make an appearance showing up with a wild hairdo and freaky wardrobe selection that sends the other drivers around the bend. Her sometimes wicked behavior doesn't hurt one bit either. The company dispatcher Mr. McBride (Howard Hesseman of `WKRP in Cincinnati' fame) takes offense to everything about her and gives her the worst driving assignments to be had. This works out fine for the movie because she gets herself into some very funny situations that set the tone for some great follow on scenes.

Later in the movie, Casey is assigned to drive Battle (Sam Jones of `Flash Gordon' fame) who happens to be the son of the company owner Mr. Witherspoon who hired her in the first place. At first this turns out to be difficult as Battle doesn't like to associate with the hired help but he still ends up in funny predicaments over and over. Later on, in a nice twist of fate, Casey and Battle actually end up as a romantic item but there is a crazy family secret that may or may not spoil their relationship.

When watching `My Chauffeur', don't expect top notch acting or a tightly defined plot but just enjoy it for a lot of good laughs and some clever humor laid out in good installments through the movie. It's just over 90 minutes of innocent fun in a simplistic kind of way. Treat yourself and enjoy this one.

I loved this movie when I first watched it years ago. Now that it's a part of my personal library, my children enjoy it too. It's funny and romantic, although not as creative as the movies we have these days, still a movie I'm glad to own.

One part of the movie I thought was quite boring, is the part with Penn & Teller. I mean, I really didn't see a point.

Well, I hope this review helps in your purchase.

I have looked for this movie for years. One of my all time favorites!!! The "Catfight" scene is one of the funniest things I've ever seen....still laugh every time I see it. Not too many people know about this one. Very much a "cult" like movie. If you find someone who has seen it...you'll have a scream!!! Highly recommended, you'll laugh until you cry!!

Teen sensation Raven (That's So Raven) stars as Galleria Garibaldi in the Disney Channel's brightly hued adaptation of the popular book series. Produced by Whitney Houston, Josie and the Pussycats meets Destiny's Child in the form of the Cheetah Girls. Granted, they're a quartet--including Chanel (Adrienne Bailon), Aqua (Kiely Williams), and Dorinda (Sabrina Bryan)--but, like Josie's trio, they hope to make it big and, like Beyoncé, they favor exclamations like "Cheetah-licious!" After the foursome gets off to a slow start, everything starts to change when they meet producer Jackal Johnson. That's the good news. The bad is that the attention goes straight to Galleria's head (and she was never exactly lacking in self-esteem). By the end, she learns there's more to life than fame and fortune. Aimed at the tween audience, girls are likely to fall for these tuneful teens, while their parents may find all the giggling and squealing a bit much. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Cheetah-licious!.......2007-01-21

Pros: Wholesome entertainment for the whole family especially tweens and teens, good morals
Cons: None

This movie is pure fun for the whole family. Raven (That's So Raven) stars as Galleria, who has an interest in fashion and wants to be a singing star. She and her friends, Dorinda, Aqua and Chanel form The Cheetah Girls and soon decide to compete in their school's talent show.

Just when things seem to click, they meet a sleazy record producer who decides to take advantage of their desire to be stars and has them wear animal masks and all. At first, they're all dazzled by his smooth talk. Soon Galleria sees through his scheme but can't convince her friends who are tired of her controlling ways. The Cheetahs go their separate ways.

A near tragedy brings the girls back together. And all is well.

Originally aired on the Disney Channel in 2003, the DVD release has an alternate ending to the one aired on TV.

One of the most acclaimed series on TV during its brief run from 1994-1995, My So-Called Life pioneered the modern teen drama and made a star out of 15-year-old Claire Danes. Ostensibly centering around the trials and tribulations of high schooler Angela Chase, My So-Called Life actually expanded to include everyone in its protagonist's orbit, from school friends to extended family, and gave its stellar ensemble cast ripe material to work with during its too-short life. Produced by thirtysomething creators Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, MSCL evoked that yuppie-friendly show with its emphasis on finding extraordinary drama within ordinary situations, but was far more heartfelt and heart-wrenching, echoing the dizzying highs and lows of adolescence. As such, it developed a cult following among young viewers who identified strongly with Angela's high school traumas and followed her every move with rapt attention. (After cancellation, the show enjoyed a popular reprise on MTV.)

Avoiding the sensational, My So-Called Life tackled every teen hot-button issue imaginable (and pioneered the then-controversial topic of teen homosexuality), but with a clear-eyed perspective, never dissolving into soap opera--even when Angela mooned over heartthrob Jordan Catalano (dreamy Jared Leto). Even as it mined adolescent angst, though, My So-Called Life never lost sight of its adults, with Bess Armstrong and Tom Irwin both phenomenal as Angela's parents, whose marriage was one of the most complex seen on TV since... well, thirtysomething. Through it all, Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Danes was a neurotic, touching, and funny center, whether obsessing over a zit or negotiating the rocky terrain of first love. Her funny, sobering, and empathetic portrait of teendom reminded us that in some ways, life was just an extended version of high school. --Mark Englehart

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Episodic gem of all '90s TV (... notes here about DVD release).......2007-02-01

This remains the one truly great and overlooked television creation of the 1990s. The ensemble acting, storytelling skills, production values, and emotional substance are as compelling for me now as when I first saw this series twelve years ago. That persistence, after what must now be ten viewings of each episode, is unique for me, as for thousands of others.

Unfortunately, it didn't get a chance to be thus adopted by millions of others, when this first aired, and that (along with ABC's well-documented corporate cowardice) is why it didn't continue for even a full 24-to-26-episode season.

I won't repeat the descriptive (and accurate) points brought out well by the editorial reviews above and many of the customers below. I'll note here one crucial aspect that is often under-mentioned: "MSCL" is not solely about the teenagers. It revolves around a group of friends of that age. Yet it puts the stories firmly in the settings of their families and their teachers, as well. One knows the context and hidden facets for all the characters' lives, even within only 900 minutes.

This came from both serendipity and law. Claire Danes (Angela) and Devon Gummersall (Brian), portraying the two central threads of characterization, were 14 to 15 when this was made, and had strong legal restrictions on their work hours. That meant more scenes had to be written or rewritten to highlight and deepen their characters' friends. All of them were portrayed by actors with more liberal hours, but who were still all teenagers, rare both then and now.

Most of all, it meant that the adults had to have substantial screen time. It shows most of all in the emotional dimensions opened up for, and by, Bess Armstrong (Patty Chase) and Tom Irwin (Graham Chase). That broadened scope is one of the strongest reasons why this series still resonates, especially for many in our 30s and 40s, when any number of sitcoms and formula dramas using pre-fab parental stereotypes have faded from cultural memory.

Some notes on the state of release for these DVDs and, potentially, for others:

~ The video quality of these discs is immaculate. The only added feature is, indeed, the English subtitles. You get the writing and acting, with menus (which do show scenes in the background), those made to shine in a nearly flawless transfer, but nothing else.

~ The sound defaults to the Dolby 5.1 Surround track, but many have found this a bit hollow, and that the Dolby 2.0 track works better to punch up the nearly constant dialogue. The track choice can be set once to cover the full viewing of any one disc. (Also, a few moments on Disc 3 have the 5.1 Surround sound out of sync.)

~ If you purchase this set from a non-U.S. seller, you won't be out of luck, as the discs are, in fact, region-free, not "region 1," as they are marked.

~ This series' DVD rights are no longer held by BMG, the company that released these discs. All the rights to use the music, especially, have to be re-negotiated by Buena Vista (part of Disney) with the recording artists and their labels. This is being pursued, but can and does take years, and until then, these discs can't be re-released.

If you like this series, if you think you might, if you were stunned with delight by it, don't wait. It's worth a premium to have a genuine set, which may not be available again in a new release for several years.

(Bootlegs are bad news, especially with reports of their messing up the menus and visual quality on these discs. Make sure you get the original BMG releases, whether for this set or for individual discs.)

5 out of 5 stars loved it!!!.......2007-01-12

I first started watching this show when I was like 10 because my older sister loved it and as I realize now so did I. For some reason the show really impacted me and I have always had a special place for it in my heart. I am fully sarisfied with the sereies and with the seller who was a joy to work with.

5 out of 5 stars A great show, cut down before its time.......2006-12-04

A loyal fan of MSCL in high school, I still love it at 26. I don't think there's anyone who can't relate to 15-year-old Angela Chase, trying to make her way through the superficialities of high school without losing her mind. As she moons over handsome popular Jordan Catalano, attempts to fend off annoying little sister Danielle or geeky neighbor Brian, Angela's voice-overs simply state out loud what any of us might be thinking in a similar situation.

Angela is also expanding her world through her friendships with gay Rickie and outrageously rebellious Rayanne. Not everyone is what they seem at first, she learns, and everyone has something to teach her.

5 out of 5 stars The world changed from .......2006-10-07

...but it was too hard to watch the accurate portrayal. This show was on back when we still trusted our Government. I watched this series with my wife. We knew each other very well. We've been around, traveled, are both well read, both of us have advanced degrees. She has a Master's Degree in History and I got a Bachelor's Degree in Economics, a Doctor's Degree in Veterinary Medicine and a Master's Degree in Experimental Psychology (Animal Behavior). We've raised four great kids that married well, exceeding our hopes. We thought we had done well and were very comfortable with our methods and results. We were amazed at how uncomfortable this series made us feel. The others who watched with us, were of various ages, and also all felt queasy and ill at ease within their own spheres, age groups and lifestyles. Why? The entire production was done in a way that would not allow us to lie to ourselves about anything. All the immaturities, selfishness and mistaken approaches that each member of Angela's family either demonstrated or narrated, letting us hear what they were thinking, all of the squirming that was elicited from us by the scenarios presented, all made the show very raw and real. The astonishingly honest interpretations presented of life and its unavoidable [...], required of us all self-revelations that had heretofore been quietly buried. The near-misses and potentially huge mistakes that we didn't do, still, those haunted us, seeing the precarious nature of the many variables existing around us all as we go/went blindly through much of life's dangerous waters. Many proactive opportunities were not taken by all of us due to fear of the unknown. That omission of action, which occurred in many cases, is as gnawing as the chances we did take that were scary. Each age group's nausea, those of every and any stage of development through life, was brought out and presented to us, having all of the subjects covered, in doing so, touched some aspect of what each of us should have, could have and/or would have done, or not. No cell phones... made a difference in many aspects. The first time I remember there being a gay kid as a regular member of the cast of a TV show was portrayed on this show without hesitation, as just another member of the group. I am sure, though have not heard, I just feel it, that the advertisers had a hard time with that and is partly why the plug was pulled. The teenage drinking and the unbridled passion unflinchingly shown when the young people made out for hours at a time was all a bit much for the Execs and the conservative overseers of the production. It made them as uncomfortable as it did us. What really happened, as Angela pointed out when speaking of the yearbook's idealized portrayals, was the upsetting book of the year's activities chronicled in this show's every episode explored more and newer ways anyone and everyone could have and did screw up. This is a true classic show that was w-a-a-a-y ahead of its time and ended up being too much to bear, too hard to watch, too difficult to starkly realize all the things that actually happened that way, that knowledge being avoided by, and for, those living in their fake, idealized yearbook-type memory lives , a condition which took a lot of self-deception to create in their/our minds as if that pleasant history had been the one that happened.

Best tv show ever. A poignantly realistic and relateable depiction of a character who craves a more interesting exciting life, but is too much of a self-conscious dork to fully fit in with the cool crowd. It's a concept with a relevence that extends well beyond the high school setting and any gender limitations, although it's felt most keenly through the eyes of the teenage Angela Chase. The grunge fashion notalgia factor adds to the show's charm.
