The film does a good job of capturing the heady, anything-goes feel of the late-1950s, early-1960s era when Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and their running buddies ruled Hollywood, Las Vegas, and, it seemed, the world. The story centers on Sinatra's relationship with John F. Kennedy (William F. Petersen) before and after he was elected president. It's not particularly flattering to either man, as Sinatra pimps Kennedy into a relationship with Judith Campbell, at the same time she was the favorite consort of mob boss Sam Giancana. Ray Liotta is a forceful Sinatra (though it's not much of an impression); Joe Mantegna has the look and the sound of the surprisingly sober Dean Martin; and Don Cheadle does a great job as the racially conflicted Sammy Davis Jr. Not great cinema but it's never less than engrossing. --Marshall Fine

The Rat Pack is a movie about the love of glory and success, and the deceptions and pain that comes with it.
It tells the story of the Rat Pack, their success and problems in life and on the stage, the Untouchable Frank Sinatra and his climb to power through the mob and his political connection with The Kennedy's, his persistence and loyalty to his friends, his love to Eva Gardner and his deceptions in life.
A great entertaining movie with some good true history; perfect acting, with great sceneries from the 50' and the 60's not to mention the beautiful costumes and cars of that period.
The quality of the DVD is also perfect; no extra features unfortunately.
Recommended.
Note: After I watched this movie, I got involved in all Sinatra's music which I never was. Great music with a great voice.

I love, love, love this movie! I highly recommend it to any Rat Pack fan. The special features are horrible, though. I was hoping for better.

A swing(er) and a stand up triple........2006-01-17

"Rat Pack" was a fantastic movie. Ray Liotta, in the final scene of the movie, conveys as close to heartache as one can get when he's recording "One For my Baby". Sinatra's always been known to be one of the only singers that can make the listener feel all the "Electric Heartache" in his songs. To me, the final shot of Liotta with obvious pain and sorrow in his face finishing the song and fading to black...that is the mark of a great film. This is one of my all time faves.
Considering the loss of JFK (at least per Peter Lawford's untimely news about staying with Bing Crosby), Ava's eventual departure, and the Rat Pack's "Heydays" pretty much behind them, Frank knows it was time to move on.
There are a quite a few Rat Pack Tribute tours going on throughout the states (and especially Vegas) in a given year, and I'm sure even with HBO's clout, they decided to utilize said Tribunals for this movie's soundtrack.
All the actors (including a pre-CSI William Petersen as then Sen. Kennedy) hold their own against an era and events that would have overwhelmed anyone.
Most of the movie keeps relative hold of the pre- and post-Kennedy election storyline, and also touches on Joe Kennedy's disain for Sammy's interracial relationship, Frank's hiring of a Blacklisted screenwriter, et al.

This is not a history lesson, and since even "Gods and Generals" and other actual events movies are throwing the "actual events" parts out the window, I wouldn't worry about this being a movie that will get the facts straight. It's played for the soundtrack and how some Presidents won elections they shouldn't have. (Hint, hint Liberals)

Could have been a great movie.......2005-11-11

I waited in angst to see this movie when it came out on HBO. I love the Rat Pack and couldn't wait to hear the music. I thought the cast was excellent. The problem was the music for Sinatra, wasn't Sinatra singing.

The result obviously for a fan is pure dissapointment to say the least. Maybe people who don't realize this will like the film and rate it 5 stars. Like I said... could have been a great movie, it just wasn't.

You can't blame the actors. Who are great! Who wouldn't want to have played these parts?

The RAT PACK HBO version.......2005-09-15

I thought it was an excellent movie with equally fine performances from the actors. It was well written and edited so one could really get a sense of what The Rat Pack was like in that particular moment in time. Indeed their talent has not been surpassed. I would like to have seen them in person in Las Vegas but this is a great substitute.

I like the Rat Pack and I like this doccumentary about Las Vegas during it's Rat pack hey day and I loved the history details of old las Vegas. My only complaint is the whiney casino worker who kept complaining about Peter Lawford just because he asked for a certain brand of cigarettes. I mean was it really necessary to trash a man no longer around to defend himself and all because he asked for a different brand of cigarettes? That part was useless and mean spirited so I have to take points off or that! At least I think this is the doccumentary with the Peter Lawford basing casino worker but I could be wrong and if it is another doccumentary then someone correct me if I'm mistaken!

Terrific Show !!.......2006-10-11

I knew this was a "Legends" show when I ordered it. Since I was born too late to see these great entertainers during the Summit era, I thought this would be as close as I could get. I was not disappointed. Sure, it's not the actual guys, but it is so lovingly put together that it is a terrific show anyway. Fake old films with the performers in character are interspersed within for the DVD to great effect. The "Silent Movie" bonus feature is particularly good. It took me a few watches to truly appreciate what they were trying to accomplish. These "Legend" type performers are extremely talented! Recommended for any Rat Pack fan !!

Unlike the other reveiwer here, I kinda thought the title on the DVD gave it away..."London's smash hit West End Show" This IS the closest anyone these days can get to seeing the Rat Pack. It's a great show and Stephen Triffit is as close to sinatra as can be. Mark Adams plays Deano very Well and Gills is a very good Sammy.
The Berrelli sisters are beautiful. The show gives an inkling of what is was like to be in the company of these 3 great entertainers. Luckily I have managed to see the show live and the DVD is a great representation and a fabulous show.

There's no Frank Sinatra in this DVD - neither is there any Dean Martin or Sammy Davis Jr.

And nobody tells you this! Until you purchase it, play the disk - and find it out for yourself, in the most unpleasant manner!

I sincerely don't know who the HECK had the dumb idea of substituting those great singers. But not telling that straight up doesn't help at all!

When I think of the Rat Pack, I think of the chemistry that happened between the members that made thier joint collaborations special (in live shows as well as their famous after-hours adventures). As a collective unit together they were greater than the sum of the individual parts.

This 3 CD set is a collection of three individual CDs outlining the individual careers of Frank, Dino and Sammy. As the CDs focus on the individual, rather than collaborative careers of these talented individuals it's an interesting collection, but does not represent 3 CDs of collaborative Rat Pack magic.

A fine package of vintage footage associated with these three very talented individuals, but - just as a collection of 4 solo albums (one from John, one from George, one from Paul and one from Ringo) would never represent a Beatle album - I'm not sure this package truly represents the real Rat Pack magic.

The "Summit" Continues.......2004-09-07

After seeing HBO's disappointing "Rat Pack" movie, it was nice to encounter this four-part A&E documentary. Running nearly 3 1/2 hours, it traces the origins of the Rat Pack from the days of Bogart and Skinny D'Amato. The documentary contains a wealth of show-biz and political history, with rare footage of the 1960 Summit in Las Vegas -- not to mention the star-studded Democratic fund-raiser organized by Frank Sinatra. The interviews with Keely Smith, Janet Leigh, Tony Curtis and Sonny King are particularly revealing. Unfortunately, there is a lack of archival interviews with Frank, Dean, Sammy, Peter and Joey. Danny Aiello's narration is OK, but could have used a little more pizzazz. For those who were not around during the Rat Pack's heyday, this DVD package is a valuable document of a bygone era.

As a young fan(21) of Frank, Dino and Sammy, I loved this buy. It goes through the whole careers of each star on an easy to follow timeline. It also provides interesting facts from the friends of the great entertainment superstars.

The first three tapes are entertaining and informative. The forth sews up things too quickly and gives no information on the Pack the their later years. A fifth tape would have been excellent.

A Rat Pack must, but DVD lacks extras.......2002-08-08

At slightly over 3 and one half hours, this two-disc set in a direct transfer from the A&E Biography series sans any commercials. Each disc contains 2 episodes, in which you have a choice of playing both back to back, one at a time, or basic scene selection. No frills here.

Narrated by Danny Aiello, this series delves deep into the lives and personalities of the four main Rat Pack players: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Peter Lawford. Very little is given on Joey Bishop (the 5th member). Along with the rise and fall of these greats and all the troubles in between, we are also treated to some detailed background histories on Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis, and Frank Sinatra and Hollywood legend Ava Gardner (Frank's 2nd wife). There's a bit to detail Peter Lawford's life and loves as well and how he gets wrapped up into the Kennedy family and a triangle with Frank.

This series is filled with rare footage highlighting many points (and again lows) in each of their careers, and there are many great stories told in interview style by Angie Dickinson, Tony Curtis, Milton Berle, singer Keely Smith and many other legendary singers and actors. Mixed into these interviews are serious and sometimes comical stories on practical jokes, heated tensions, personal issues of the group and spotlights on others that traveled at times with the Rat Pack including mobster Sonny Dimato and Jimmy Durante.

The 4 episodes do their best to keep things chronological; however, (and for obvious reasons) do jump around from time to time only to paint a nice solid picture of a story that may span years. The series in total seems to focus primarily on Sinatra, and interlaces his story with the others.

All in all an excellent series though Joey Bishop gets the short end of the stick in this biography, but really....it is about Frank, Dean, and Sammy isn't it?

Judd and Little Moon was an incredibly bad movies with the poorest acting I have seen.

the movies on this disc might be good,but from the very poor transfers here(droped audio,picture drop-out and freese pictures ,and all the movies were very very dark almost not watchable)you would never know. skip this mess and look for these movies elsewere!!!

One classic, two duds.......2005-01-02

I picked this up when I was first building my DVD collection. I wanted a copy of SUDDENLY but this was the only DVD issue of it I could find at the time. Being somewhat of a Rat Pack fan, I thought I was getting a great three-for-one bargain. While SUDDENLY is a classic film noir (and one of Frank Sinatra's best films), the Sammy Davis western comedy and the Dean & Jerry films are dogs. I'm gonna replace it with one of the bargain priced reissues of SUDDENLY that are now available.

This 3 DVD B&W set is done well EXCEPT that it is NOT "The Rat Pack" singing! It is Frank, Dean & Sammy singing separately. Sammy sings on one DVD, Dean on another & Frank on the third. I thought it was the Las Vegas act that they did TOGETHER as The Rat Pack but it was not. If the DVD said "The Beatles Sing", would you expect 4 DVD's with John, Paul, George & Ringo singing their own selections separately? No! So, if you don't mind Frank, Dean & Sammy singing their music individually, this is a good 3 DVD set. But if you want The Rat Pack as we knew them in their Las Vegas act, this isn't it. Each of them sing about 12-15 songs on each DVD, but the song selections could have been better. Most of the songs in this set were NOT big hits.

Dean Martin had a nice tone&was funny as well. very versatile cat. but the Most Versatile of them all was Sammy Davis Jr. He could impersonate people&could re-arrrange songs&make them fit His range. he was truly one of a Kind.all three of these Cats together were something else.they had a style all there own.Classic.
