Book of Love takes what could be a trashy premise and turns it into a strikingly honest examination of human messiness. Elaine (Frances O'Connor, Mansfield Park) and David (Simon Baker, The Ring Two) are a happy, successful couple who befriend a clever, athletic, but lonely 16 year-old boy named Chet (Gregory Smith, Everwood). But when Chet falls in love with Elaine, she responds and sleeps with him out of a mix of sympathy and desire. From here the story could have become overwrought melodrama, but the subtle script, perfectly-pitched performances, and lucid direction make Book of Love a portrait of smart, articulate people at the mercy of their least articulate emotions: lust, jealousy, anger, fear. Writer/director Alan Brown, making his debut feature film, even manages to weave in issues of goodness and the history of Cambodia without the movie ever feeling academic or didactic--on the contrary, the movie feels intimate and physical throughout, as concerned with the character's animal responses as with their struggle to remain rational. Also featuring Bryce Dallas Howard (The Village) and music from indie bands The Magnetic Fields and Clem Snide. --Bret Fetzer
Description
Elaine and David seem to have the perfect marriage. But everything changes when they meet Chet, an innocent 15 year old boy full of youthful wonder. The threesome form an immediate bond, but a momentary lapse in judgment threatens to rupture the core of the trio's seemingly idyllic lives. A sensual tale of the complexity of marriage and desire, Book Of Love examines the choices we make in our daily lives-and the consequences that follow.

If you think you hate your job, think again. Francesco Dellamorte (Rupert Everett), the titular Cemetery Man, lives a lonely life with a dead-end career. He works and resides in a cemetery that holds a dark, hidden secret. You see, those who are buried in Dellamorte's cemetery have the tendency to rise from the dead. Francesco's job is to make sure the dead remain dead. When they rise, he must hunt them down and ensure they get their eternal rest. Since his strange career takes up most of his time, there is no room in his life for romance or friendship. His sole companion is his mute, Igor-like assistant Gnaghi (François Hadji-Lazaro). Not surprisingly, Francesco has grown weary of the dull drum and repetitive routine his job and life have become. It is not until he meets the girl of his dreams (Anna Falchi), who happens to be a widow attending her husband's funeral, that Francesco realizes that there may be more to life than this. Sound a bit odd? Well, it is. But fans of the zombie and the "twentysomething disgruntled worker" genres will feel right at home with this Michele Soavi cult favorite. At its center, Cemetery Man is a black comedy/existential mediation on loneliness and career disappointment. But where Fight Club is entrenched in an action/buddy-flick setting and Office Space is a strict black comedy, Cemetery Man is staged deep in the Italian zombie genre, giving it extra points for originality. --Rob Bracco

Description

Rupert Everett (MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING) stars as Francesco Dellamorte, a cemetery watchman whose job is to slaughter the living dead when they rise hungry from their graves. But following a tragic tryst with a lusty young widow (stunning Anna Falchi in one of three sexy roles), Francisco begins to ponder the mysteries of existence. Is there long-term satisfaction in blasting the skulls of `returners'? Will his imbecile assistant find happiness with the partial girl-corpse of his dreams? And if death is the ultimate act of love, can a psychotic killing spree send Dellamorte to the brink of enlightenment? Italian horror master Michele Soavi (STAGE FRIGHT) directed this brilliantly bloody black comedy — also known as DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE — that Gore Score calls "a deliciously demented, delightfully surreal stew of sex, death, splatter, male-bonding, barfing, zombies and nothing less than the Ultimate Meaning of Life!"

5 out of 5 stars One of the best........2007-05-31

This film is an amazing horror film, great story, good characters and amazing effects. This flick has it all, blood, gore, sex, splatter, and great visual's with the graveyard, espessially at night. Truly great horror film with all the ingredients of true horror included.

5 out of 5 stars Cemetary Man.......2007-05-17

This film will ALWAYS be a classic for me. Being an indy film maker myself, I really appreciate the attention to detail with the art side of the flick, but it's not too overbearing. It's gory and has all the elements of a good zombie/horror movie. Continual, unending twists and turns for our hero makes your heart ache.

If you haven't seen this movie. Get out from under your rock and DO SO!

4 out of 5 stars Minus the DVD Quality an Excellent Delight!.......2007-04-30

The movie is certainly eccentric and is not for everyone. If ones penchant is the likes of "The Night of the Living Dead" or the "Dawn of the Dead," it will certainly disappoint. However, for true horror fans and fans of zombie genres it presents a unique presentation and perspective with greater character study. There's something very funny about the sight of the dour Rupert Everett nonchalantly blowing off the heads of walking corpses that doesn't immediately strike you as funny, but remains in your mind as a wonderfully light-hearted way of approaching such actions. Much like the excellent Donnie Darko and Mulholland Dr., Delamorte Dellamore is a film that will probably remain in your mind for a long time after you finish watching it as you try to figure out what it all means. The mixture of humor, character study, fine acting, gore, and nudity sets it self apart from the many usual and common "shoot'em up" zombie movies. However, I do have one quarrel. It's not the movie, it's the production company who transfered and dubbed the movie. It was extremely poor. Even Rupert Everett, Mickey Knox and Clive Riche who are all english actors seemed to been dubbed, with a number of the actors, particularly Anna Falchi, being given extremely weak voices. I would of suggested watching it in Italian with English subtitles, but that option isn't available with the American DVD. Unfortunately it seems both the German, UK, and the US version are "MIA" when it comes to quality. In the end if you don't mind DVD quality, those with an interest in the bizarre are recommended to check this title out!

5 out of 5 stars Cemetery Man: a thinking man's zombie flick.......2007-04-12

Until recently, Cemetery Man (aka Dellamorte Dellamore) could not be bought on this side of the Atlantic in either VHS or DVD format, and those that were available from 'private' sources were pirated and over-priced. Thanks to Amazon for making this horror classic available to Americans.
For a complete exegesis of Cemetery Man you are encouraged to visit IMDb.

1 out of 5 stars Don't even steal this movie!!!.......2007-04-07

This tripe was horrible. The only reason i gave it 1 star is because of the bus wreck that was very gory. Besides that, and when the boy scout zombies attack, I fast forwarded thru the entire movie. Even the nudity was horrible. If all other movies on earth are destroyed and TV is abolished, you should STILL not watch this film!!!!!

Nothing interests filmmaker Robert Altman more than a contained culture that mixes bare humanity with local eccentricity (think of his M*A*S*H and Nashville). So Altman's Popeye (1980), based on the old comic strip, works best as a portrait of a busy, cluttered, cartoonish town called Sweethaven. But it is much less successful as a comprehensible story about the famous sailor with massive forearms and a relationship with Olive Oyl (Shelley Duvall). Robin Williams plays Popeye with his usual brilliance for mimicry, Paul Dooley makes a credible Wimpy, and Paul L. Smith makes an impression as the oversized bully, Bluto. But this strange, disastrous film never becomes more than an expensive workshop airing out Altmanesque themes. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Socially impacting it ain't, but............2007-06-06

This film may not have had the social and political impact as M*A*S*H....

But IT AIN'T SUPPOSED TO!!!!!!!!!

I remember seeing this film as a kid and LOVING it! I had grown up watching Popeye cartoons and seeing it in live-action was amazing. Even as an adult (27 years later) I still love this movie. I will NEVER understand why it gets bashed by movie-goers AND the people involved in creating it.

Robin Williams IS Popeye in the flesh. If for no other reason, watch this film just for his performance. No other single actor could have portrayed Popeye more perfectly. From the constant muttering and butchering of the English language right down to the squinting eye, Williams had it DOWN PAT.

And why do people bash the soundtrack? The songs, although a bit odd (most of the lyrics don't rhyme, but so what?!?!?!), were extremely memorable. When I was a kid, I had the soundtrack on vinyl and damn near wore it out.

The story is a bit simplistic, but one should not watch this film expecting and earth-shattering plot or Academy-caliber acting. The characters and situations were based on a CARTOON for God's sake! Take this movie for what it is; a live version of a cartoon feature. And don't forget; there's a moral to the story. The moral is:

Kids, eat your green vegetables so you can be big and strong!

Watch this with your kids or watch it alone. It doesn't matter. You'll have fun either way.

I y'am what I y'am!

2 out of 5 stars Willians First, Altman's Worst.......2007-05-03

For every Spiderman film, there is someone's Howard the Duck!

In the beginning of this movie, an animated Popeye appears and said " I think I am in the wrong movie" I think he is right

Popeye is a yuppie's version Paint Your Wagon, the worst musical ever made. This is Robin Willians's first film. In my opinion, this is Robert Altman's worst (one would have wished he did a director commentary to give better insight which he didnt). This so called musical, written by cartoonist and Popeye fan Jules Feiffer. This lackluster tunes make this live action toon falls with sour notes of a bad musical

The harbor town of Sweethaven looks like a revamped Segarville from Popeye's comics. However the sets looks like sets from Altman's McCabe and Mrs Miller

Williams has his popeye mutter down and loses his Mork from Ork performance, but he cant sing..especially in his Popeye voice. The most perfectly cast in this production is Shelley DuVall as Olive Oil

Altman needed a tighter rein on this film and its cast who crowds into frames of film . It seems more like an overcrowded carnival atmosphere rather than Popeye's search for his father (Ray Walston).

The two stars areWwilliams who tries and Duvall that becomes Popeye and Olive Oil

5 out of 5 stars Surreal and a little nighmarish.......2007-04-30

If I hadn't seen it as a child and loved it, I'd be wary about showing it to children. Because when I first saw it through the eyes of an adult, it creeped me right out.

There's a vaguely sinister undertone to the whole thing (maybe a product of the rumored massive consumption of cocaine during production), from Bluto laboriously eating glass (!) and Popeye's bulging, waxy prosthetic forearms (with a smattering of hair for that extra touch of the grotesque), to a showdown between an infant and an angry-looking octopus and a boxing match on a dingy, poorly-lit barge between Popeye and a sweaty, hulking man-child. Elements that might be benevolent in a cartoon or comic strip (such as Olive Oyl's bulbous shoes or the circus sideshow-like denizens of Sweethaven) turn freakish in the flesh, creating, inadvertently, an almost David-Lynchian atmosphere of confused dread. Luckily for the kiddies that dread never pays off in a gut punch, but that doesn't diminish its value for those looking for artful production design and a thoroughly surreal experience.

4 out of 5 stars The Great Muttering Sailor Man.......2007-04-19

Opinions are like noses: everyone has one. Some like it, some don't. Let me say this, however, in defense of this 1980 movie starring Robin Williams as Popeye. It is certainly unfair to say, by any stretch, that this is 'the worst movie of all-time', or 'one of the worst...'. It is funny how, at the time of this writing, that the average vote for this film is about 4.5 stars...Actually that is about right. For those who do not know about the wonderful website called The Internet Movie Database (IMDb.com), you really need to check it out. [...] My point is this: There are many opinions. So if you have never seen this movie, decide for yourself. Do you remember the incredible muttering Popeye (done by Jack Mercer on the cartoons)?. I'm talking especially about the early Fleischer Studios Popeye cartoons from the 30's. You know, the ones in black-and-white. That's what I loved the most, the muttering Popeye. Well, Robin Williams does it superbly! Also, Shelly Duvall is excellent as Olive Oyl in this movie. Granted, the story is kind of bland. The music is not always top notch. Yes, it is too long. However, I enjoyed watching Robin Williams' masterful portrayal of everyone's favorite Sailor Man. Sure, Olive can get a little annoying at times, but wasn't she basically that way in the cartoons? So if you loved the muttering Popeye, then you'll love the movie, overall. Never mind the story. The storyline doesn't really matter, I feel. But, alas, you say you cannot really remember those vintage Popeye cartoon shorts too well. Not to worry! They are scheduled to be released on DVD... FULLY RESTORED!!! Volume 1 (1933 - 1938), with a July 2007 scheduled release, will have, in my opinion, the very best of all the 230 total Popeye cartoon shorts. (Incidently, William Costello provided Popeye's voice from 1933 until sometime in 1935. He was very good also, but the really GREAT muttering came when Jack Mercer took over in 1935). By all means, if you are a huge Popeye fan like myself, then you absolutely must get these DVDs. After listening to the great Jack Mercer, and watching the incredible animation in those early years, then compare Popeye to Robin Williams' version. I dare say, you will see the similarity. So, the bottom line is: See for yourself. If you love Popeye, the character, then you will not be disappointed with Robin Williams' performance. The movie itself... well, you be the judge. Likely you have a nose, so without a doubt you, too will have an opinion. It's ALL alright.

Sex and Lucia engages mind and body with its time-bending narrative and images of beautiful Spaniards having vibrant sex. The story shifts between past and present, fact and fiction, so a plot summary won't capture it, but… A young writer named Lorenzo falls into a passionate relationship with a waitress named Lucía. But he also finds himself drawn to a young nanny taking care of a child who just might be the result of an anonymous fling Lorenzo had with a woman he met on an island the year before. Lorenzo fantasizes about the lives of all of these women until a horrific event sends him into a suicidal depression. This may sound obscure or flat, but Sex and Lucía unfolds clearly and beautifully, featuring stunning visual images of both nature and flesh, and weaving a poetic spell much like the director's previous film, The Lovers of the Arctic Circle. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-05-13

It definately kept your interest. Mainly because it was hard to follow and the story is so strange that you just had to see what was happening next.

4 out of 5 stars Eroticatic-.......2007-01-10

A very romanic and very erotic movie. Paz Vega is one of the most beauitful actress to come along in years, and has moved into the mainstream of movie making. The story is a wondrous love story. I would recommend it for adults.

5 out of 5 stars What is all about beyond intimacy?.......2006-07-19

This dramatic movie exposes many sex activities. Beyond all that, what is the message to send for the viewer? "Do you want to have wild sex with strangers?" Or "do you want to have intimacy sex with your lover?" With all the sex enjoyment, love and "blood" relationship is the final count after all. This is the destiny but not up to our choice. This is why Lorenzo falls into suicidal depression. This is why Lorenzo bursts into sorry tears to Comandrona. This is why Lucia rejects Tony's sex even there is a strong indication of sex enjoyment. Are these sex activities necessary? Let's look at it in different way. Can the movie have same visionary and emotional impacts without sex scenes? The answer is clear. Overall I enjoy this move very much, even have a shock for many days.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-07-05

In a word this movie was disappointing. It's supposed to be about beautiful Spaniards having sex on a magnificent Mediterranean island. Well there wasn't that much sex and the photography was nothing special. Add that to a plodding pace and poor plot and you don't get a very good film

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous!! .......2006-07-02

"Put a lot of sex in it; that's always nice," Lorenzo (protagonist of this film) is advised about his novel-in-progress. "Sex and Lucia," which contains stories within stories within stories, unpacks this claim, showing that sex is not always "nice," but that like narrative it can be liberating and transformative.

Tragedy and betrayal lie at this film's heart, but because its story bends and twists around as it follows Lorenzo's false starts and revelations as a writer (it has, as it explains, a hole at the center which the audience, like the characters, can fall through) it also offers a way out -- a way to distinguish voyeurism and pornography from love and art, a way to stay faithful to a vision of human trust and imagination.

Brilliantly accomplished, "Sex and Lucia" displays the loveliness and ample talent of its stars, especially the beautiful Paz Vega (as Lucia) and Tristan Ulloa (as Lorenzo). A tremdous film!

Boy meets girl, and boy loses girl--no more and no less than that--in this romantic story of young, upwardly mobile African Americans navigating through Chicago club culture to the perilous shores of a relationship. The film was surprisingly popular at a couple of key film festivals in 1997, but there isn't anything particularly noteworthy about it aside from its rare emphasis on a love affair between black urbanites. Larenz Tate and Nia Long are fine in the leads (Tate makes a convincingly self-centered boy-man), and director Theodore Witcher aims for his small target and hits it squarely. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars I've got a Jones in my bones!.......2007-05-28

What can I say about this movie that has not been said? This was one of the best love stores (next to Pretty Woman) that has ever been made. If you have not seen this movie, you need to purchase it now, lock yourself in front of the television and don't make any plans for the next two hours because it WILL NOT disappoint! Enjoy!! 5 out of 5 stars I got a Love Jones.......2007-05-07

This is my favorite love story of all time! Larenz Tate is gorgeous and Nia Long depands your attention. I was swept away the first time I saw this movie back in 1997. Watching it reminds me of how in love I was when this movie first came out. New love is a beautiful thing! Nia and Larenz show you that.

5 out of 5 stars "A great ear for POETRY".......2007-03-29

This was a great movie. It had some "Very Good" actors & actresses that starred in it. I was very pleased. The poetry and story line was *GREAT*!!!

5 out of 5 stars Love is in the air and in words............2007-02-27

"Love Jones", I must say was more than a movie. It had everything: romance, friendship, heartbreak, and poetry. Larenz Tate and Nia Long were a perfect match. I just love the movie!

5 out of 5 stars Love Jones.......2007-02-14

Love Jones is my favorite movie. It shows an unique side to black love. The characters seem well rounded and "deep".

Blade meets The Crow and The Matrix in Underworld, a hybrid thriller that rewrites the rulebook on werewolves and vampires. It's a "cuisinart" movie (blend a lot of familiar ideas and hope something interesting happens) in which immortal vampire "death dealers" wage an ancient war against "Lycans" (werewolves), who've got centuries of revenge--and some rather ambitious genetic experiments--on their lycanthropic agenda. Given his preoccupation with gloomy architecture (mostly filmed in Budapest, Hungary), frenetic mayhem and gothic costuming, it's no surprise that first-time director Len Wiseman gained experience in TV commercials and the art departments of Godzilla, Men in Black, and Independence Day. His work is all surface, no substance, filled with derivative, grand-scale action as conflicted vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale, who later became engaged to Wiseman) struggles to rescue an ill-fated human (Scott Speedman) from Lycan transformation. It's great looking all the way, and a guaranteed treat for horror buffs, who will eagerly dissect its many strengths and weaknesses. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Should become a classic!.......2007-06-13

I've always been a sucker for vampire movies, and no matter whether the story is a deep, thought provoking one; or a good solid action packer like this is, I'll see it. When I first saw trailers for this film I knew I was going to be there on opening night!

This movie (in my opinion) will become a classic. Whether it becomes a mainstream classic or just a solid cult-classic remains to be seen. The story is very well written and as someone pointed out, it revolves around WHY there is a war between vampires and werewolves and less on the creatures themselves.

The acting is just about as superb as it can get. In my opinion not led by Beckinsale, but rather by Bill Nye who plays a very convincing Viktor. Slight over-acting in spots by Speedman, but overall he plays very well off of the rest of the cast.

The directing is just as superb. It is over the top with the effects but only in the spots where it is needed. Enhancing the story, excitement, and tension all inter-twining the characters and their respective stories as to how the war began and where it will go. The ending leaves the option for a sequel (which we now see is the case) and it keeps the viewer hooked for the next chapter!

Highly recommened and will be a classic over the course of time.

5 out of 5 stars A girl can't save no situation without a boy.......2007-06-07

Apart from the comic trip look and feel of this film, apart from the special effects both on the side of the vampires and on the side of the werewolves, apart from the impossible love affair between a vampire girl and a werewolf boy, at the beginning qt least, soon to become something else, this film is decadent in all possible ways and somewhere kind of paranoid. And yet there is something that floats over the whole thing, that survives the animal horror that animates these pictures and bleak places. Two species have been fighting for centuries and the salvation of both is in a new blood line that will cross the two different ones. Peace can only come from crossing the bloodlines of the two rivals, the two enemies, the two antagons. And that works, in the film of course, because in reality if it were that simple...! It has been noticed that when a civil war starts we never know when it will stop. It took some thirty years for the latest episode of the Irish civil war to come to maybe an end and that was only the last episode of a war that was started by the invasion and conquest of Ireland by the English three or four centuries ago. And I will not speak of the Bosnian or Kosovar conflicts, nor of the opposition between Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq and in the world. But that's the optimistic final scene of a film that targets teenagers when war comes to an end because the two bloodlines have been mixed in the veins of a new leader. Yet I found the film a little bit long and repetitive as for the fighting scenes.

The beginning can be pathetic. It's unclear how many movies I recognized while 'observing' and loosely watching. Matrix rings a bell. I mean that in a derogatory way. I'll stop there. I do belong, on occassion, to cultous fangorious, goth groups.....when the moon is full and friday collides mysteriously with the 13th...which was drunkily yesterday. Did I mention how I stayed up all night with friends and watched this film for the first time? We borrowed it from the library for free. Awesomeness, free. What lulled me from my drunken sleepiness, was the occassional moody fits of Victor, who seemed the savior of this film. I loved when he cracked that scientist' skull because......well he was mad. And he didn't want that guy to squeeze out another wise'allicky comment. I mean, I've never seen some dude just wind up and smack someone with one death blow and successfully kill a person like that. He's the man. So I liked it for that, and I liked that it was sorta short and way gothy. There you go.

Staid, secure publisher James Stewart leads a quiet life until he meets his bewitching downstairs neighbor, Kim Novak. John Van Druten's lighthearted Broadway comedy becomes a lush if lightweight romantic vehicle for Stewart and Novak, who would reunite for Hitchcock's Vertigo the next year. Novak is at her best as a Greenwich witch halfway between the worlds of magic and mortals, looking after her dotty aunt (Elsa Lanchester) and mischievous warlock brother (Jack Lemmon) as they keep their skills in practice. Novak's specialty is making men fall for her, but it's a one-way street: when a witch falls in love, she loses her powers. Director Richard Quine gives the witches an almost beatnik sensibility, a real Greenwich Village subculture hanging out in underground clubs and smart curio shops. Elegantly photographed in rich, glowing colors by James Wong Howe, Bell, Book and Candle is a fantasy world in New York set to a funky bongo-laced jazz score by George Duning. Quine's gliding camera is somewhat marred by abrupt editing, but his handling of actors is superb, in particular Novak, whose mysterious beauty masks inner turmoil and romantic yearnings. Ernie Kovacs appears as a wry author whose specialty is the supernatural, and Hermione Gingold is suitably florid as a witch elder with a penchant for theatricality. For once in his life Stewart is actually upstaged by the slyly comic performances around him. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Witchcraft!.......2007-06-14

This film is a wonderful classic love story with a twist. Anyone who remembers the early episodes of Bewitched is bound to see the similarities. It has become one of my "comfort" movies.

4 out of 5 stars A rare bird...........2007-04-26

Yet another one of the perfectly made romantic comedies of the late fifties/early sixties that, along with "Auntie Mame", "Charade" and the slew of Doris Day movies, starting with "Pillow Talk" and ending with "Send Me No Flowers", gave an ideal and funny take on life in an innocent time.

Kim Novak plays Gillian Holroyd, a kittenish practioner of the eldritch arts living in Greenwich Village, NYC, with her Aunt Queenie, played by Elsa Lanchester. Jack Lemmon plays her brother, Nicky, (always a favorite name of any young male involved in the dark arts in fiction for some reason.) It's Christmas, and, believe it or not, these three conjurers are celebrating it like anybody else, exchanging presents and watching it snow.

James Stewart plays the unlikely object of her desire, (the only mismatch I can think of that was worse about this time was Doris Day and Danny Thomas in "I'll See You In My Dreams"!) named Shepherd Henderson ("Shep"). I think maybe someone like John Gavin or Cary Grant or Robert Sterling might have been better choices, but there is one scene in this movie that only Stewart could have done, and it is HILARIOUS!

The plot goes like this: Gillian is lonely. She sees Shep moving into her very apt. building just before she and her small family celebrate Christmas. She wishes, using her cat, Pywacket, as a 'familiar', to actually meet him. Shep goes upstairs to get settled in and finds Gillian's aunt, Queenie, fooling around at his desk, even though he distinctly remembers locking the door when he left earlier. She explains that he did NOT lock the door, and she saw how sloppy his desk was and that his window was open on a snowy night, and straightened it all out. After objecting mildly about her unbidden presence there, he dismisses her, seeing how eccentric she is, (and conceding that it IS Greenwich Village, after all,) not realizing the whole truth. Queenie objects to his treatment of her and puts a temporary curse on his phone so he only hears garbled nonsense on it.

Early Christmas morning, after partying at the Zodiac Club with Shep and his fiancée, Gillian, Nicky and Queenie exchange gifts at Gillian's place. Gillian gives Nicky records, Queenie a scarf, and Nicky gives Gillian a vial of summoning fluid, which she puts to the test immediately. It isn't clear whether she uses it to bring Shep to her apartment, curse his fiancée or what, but Shep DOES show up fairly quickly and they get to know each other. This is AFTER Shep tells her that he and his intended are getting married later that very day. Gillian then starts humming the haunting theme song, again using Pywacket as a familiar, to put the kibosh to THAT business!

What follows is a series of classic scenes that didn't see any equals until the 80s! The scene in Miss De Passe's house where Shep goes to get "de-spelled" and is forced to drink a disgusting potion she whips up is almost worth the price of the DVD on its own. The scene where Nicky meets an author character, played by Ernie Kovacs, (Shep is a publisher,) and takes him to an occult apothecary, is also funny, as the camera pans down the list of diseases and spells it has remedies for.

For some reason, after the mid-sixties, Hollywood couldn't make another good romantic comedy to save its life. "A Thousand Clowns" was the last really good one, made smack dab in the middle of the decade, in 1965!

"Bell,Book & Candle" is a rare movie that's hard to find, no matter WHO you know, so, if you can find it, (and I found it right here at Amazon,) GET IT!!

You'll wonder why the people who produced "Bewitched" even tried, it's such a pale imitation. It's been reported that "B,B&C" was the basis for "Bewitched"...DON'T YOU BELIEVE IT! "Bell, Book and Candle" is in a class by itself, and so much more enjoyable than its saccharine TV counterpart, it isn't funny!

4 out of 5 stars A Romantic Comedy Named After an Exorcism Method?!.......2007-04-11

I can see that this unusual and silly movie has its admirers. As there are a number of reviews on this page giving ample background on it, let me point out that perhaps the film's principal oddity is the fact that a lithe Kim Novak would be so smitten with the decidedly older and rather dull character played by James Stewart.

No matter, the actors are all quite droll, particularly a florid Ernie Kovacs. And a special shout-out to the Siamese cat that played Pyewacket.

SIDELIGHT: Pyewacket was allegedly a familiar of the "witch" that Englishman and "witchfinder general" Matthew Hopkins found in 1644. Through physical coercion, the woman named her other familiars as well. They included animals named Vinegar Tom, Pecke in the Crowne, and Griezzel Greedigutt. (I particularly like that last one.)

5 out of 5 stars Superhero comicbook readers hit a movie.......2007-06-11

I grew up on the Silver Age Comics (60s) of the heroes with high ideals and teams. My favorite group was the Legion of Superheroes. This movie reminded me so much of the Legion. It is a great clean movie that mom and dad can sit down and watch with the kids without embarrassment! No cursing, no nudity, no blood.....and a great story. Wow!! How long has it been since you could put all four of those ideas into one movie? Gather the family for some feel-good movie viewing.

4 out of 5 stars DISNEY PUTS A SPIN ON THE HIGH SCHOOL COMEDY.......2007-05-13

It's good to see Kurt Russell back in a Disney movie again. The story centers around a Super Hero Mom and Dad who send their son off to a special secret Super Hero school in the sky. The usual "high school" high jinks occur in this family friendly comedy with some new interesting twist. Lynda Carter has a small amusing role at "Sky High".

4 out of 5 stars "What do you want me to do? I'm not Wonder Woman, y'know!"---Lynda Carter .......2007-05-07

Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano) is the son of the world's two most famous superheroes, The Commander aka Steve Stronghold (Kurt Russell) and Jetstream aka Josie Stronghold (Kelly Preston). In a world where superheroes are an everyday part of life, their children attend Sky High, a private secondary school built on an anti-gravity platform far above the surface of the Earth, accessible only by a flying school bus piloted/diiven by Kevin Heffernan (THE KING OF QUEENS) and run by Principal Powers (Lynda Carter of WONDER WOMAN).

As part of the first day Freshman rituals, the new students are expected to demonstrate their super powers in front of the rest of the class. Graded by Coach Boomer, the retired superhero Sonic Boom, students are either classified as Heroes or Sidekicks; it is the Sidekicks who become the pariahs in the pecking order due to their weak or offbeat, or impractical powers (one boy glows bright yellow, one girl can shapeshift only into a guinea pig, Will's best friend, Layla (Danielle Panabaker) refuses to demonstrate her powers for ethical reasons, and Will shows no sign of super powers at all).

Fortunately for Will, the prettiest and most popular girl in school, Gwen (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), takes a shine to him. A Technopath, she c
