Irish writer-director Neil Jordan followed up his surprise hit The Crying Game with this controversial biography of IRA leader Michael Collins (Liam Neeson), one of the most important political leaders of the 20th century. The film follows Collins as he matures from guerrilla leader to national hero and statesman. Jordan's take on Collins is that he was set up by Irish president Eamon De Valera (Alan Rickman), who was jealous of Collins's legendary popularity. De Valera puts Collins in the position of negotiating a peace treaty that would never satisfy the Irish hero's hard-core followers. When the IRA leader returns with a first-step compromise, De Valera undercuts Collins's popularity by refusing to support the revised treaty. And the civil war continues for decades. Michael Collins occasionally loses focus and momentum, but is the kind of exciting historical drama that deserves to be called "sweeping." It is also one of the most beautifully photographed films in years: cinematographer Chris Menges uses color and texture to set moods and accent emotions. The movie also stars Aidan Quinn, Julia Roberts, and Stephen Rea. The digital video disc includes a 50-minute BBC documentary on the making of the movie. --Jim Emerson

In Because I Said So, Diane Keaton outdoes any pushy parent trying to marry off their children. On the eve of her 60th birthday, Daphne (Keaton) decides that she will find a suitable suitor for her youngest daughter Milly (Mandy Moore). Never mind that Moore was barely into her 20's when she shot the film and easily could pass as a high-school senior. The film asks us to believe that an otherwise smart, loving mother would push marriage on a young woman who obviously wasn't ready for that kind of commitment. The romantic comedy has a cute premise that grows old fast: In order to root for Daphne's almost manic desire to see Milly walk down the aisle, the audience has to believe she's undergoing some kind of trauma, or at least dying of an incurable disease. But because she is such an overbearing busybody whose best interests for her daughter have little to do with reality, viewers just see an obnoxious, meddling mother trying to micromanage her child's life. That we don't want to strangle Daphne is a credit to Keaton's acting skills, which manage to shine through, even in the most over-the-top scenes. Lauren Graham and the always adorable Piper Perabo play Milly's older, married sisters. Had the film revolved around the three sisters' lives--sans mom--Because I Said So would have been a much more interesting picture. --Jae-Ha Kim

3 out of 5 stars Flawed but decent........2007-07-01

Because I Said So starring Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore is a so-so mother/daughter movie. Parts of this movie work and of course parts of it fall flat. The supporting cast is annoying but the true talent of this film is Mandy Moore. She holds her own as Milly, her mother is controlling, opininated, nervous, and constantly on her daughter's back about settling down and sticking to a relationship. This movie has some funny moments but don't expect it to blow you away. If you're a Diane Keaton then this movie is for you.

5 out of 5 stars A Movie For Mothers & Daughters.......2007-07-01

A charming movie about letting go...Daphne Wilder (Keaton), 60, single, and mother to three successful daughters takes it upon herself to select a mate for her youngest daughter Milly (played to perfection by Moore). By placing a personal ad on the internet and filtering out all the rejects, Daphne has selected an equally successful and gorgeous architect Jason (Tom Hank's greatest discovery Tom Everett Scott), however Milly has chosen Johnny (theatre actor Gabriel Macht), a single father raising a son with love of music and tattoos.
Dismayed that Milly would choose a musician over the perfect architect, Daphne tries to run Milly's life and finally realizes that despite her good intentions she has to let go and let Milly make her own mistakes. Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls) gives a fantastic performance as Daphne's oldest daughter/psychiatrist Maggie. Piper Perabo (Cheaper by the Dozen) also strikes a cord as the middle daughter Mae, who both try to persuade their mother to let Milly lead her own life. Stephen Collins (7th Heaven) also gives a memorable performance as Johnny's dad Joe, who teaches Daphne a thing or two about love, life, and letting go.

4 out of 5 stars Portrait of a pushy, annoying parent.......2007-06-29

This movie received relatively bad reviews, but I have to wonder why. Diane Keaton played a mom who WOULD NOT let her daughters grow up and find their own ways in the world. As I watched the movie at a local theatre, I was tempted to rush the screen and strangle Diane's character for the controlling "witch" she was! But since when should we hold the nature of the role against the actress portraying it? The acting was fine, and the topic was extremely timely for our day. We live in a world where parents refuse to let their adult "children" go and some "children" refuse to leave home when they reach adulthood (see "Failure to Launch" for the flip side of this crisis)! The point of this movie (to me) is that parents must realize that their role in life is to prepare their children for adulthood, and that controlling your children's lives past adulthood is ridiculous.

I think this movie makes an important statement, and if it saves even one adult "child" from the clutches of a well-meaning but annoyingly controlling parent, then it has served its purpose!

1 out of 5 stars Formula tripe.......2007-06-27

Films like this is what happens when Hollywood acts like our present music industry, reducing the creation of its art form to a factory assembly line, cranking out endless clones one after the other according to tried and true profitable formulas. Follow the formula, include a few dumb laughs, try out the film on some test audiences, change what they don't like, keep the production costs down, and release the churned out swill for a guaranteed modest profit. If you haven't already been asking "How on earth do these dumb rom coms (formula romantic comedies) even get made in the first place," you will be. Oh yes, you will be.

1 out of 5 stars Sadly falls short, way short, of what it could have been..........2007-06-26

The sad thing about `Because I Said So' is that it oozes with potential yet crashes and burns in takeoff. The pairing of the uber-talented Diane Keaton and lovable Mandy Moore should and very well could bring forth a great romantic comedy but instead proves to be one of the most painful movie watching experiences in recent memory. Watching Keaton resort to cheesy dialog and over-the-top antics that even she can't make work is enough to make any true fan of the actress verp but it's the ridiculous way the premise is executed that makes me shiver at the thought of the two hours I lost to this train wreck. As someone mentioned, had the film revolved more around the three daughters and less around the overbearing and somewhat sexually repressed mother then it may have been a much more rewarding film.

The plot revolves around Daphne, a mother approaching her sixtieth birthday with two married daughters and then their Milly, her youngest who is still single and can't seem to keep a relationship for very long. Daphne makes it her goal to pair Milly up with a good man, even going as far as to put out a `personal add' in order to interview men for her daughter and then secretly set her up with them. Then Daphne meets her match when a young guitarist becomes aware of her meddling scheme and takes it upon himself to woo Milly foiling Daphne's plans.

It's funny to me because as I was typing the above paragraph I realized just how funny and entertaining this movie really could have been. On paper it sounds great but on screen it was horrendous. The biggest problem was Keaton. Her car chase scene alone almost brought my wife to eject the DVD it was that mind-numbing. Diane has always had a habit of overacting, but as she proved in `Something's Gotta Give' she can reign it in to where it's enjoyable and entertaining. Here though she possesses none of the charm that garnered her the Oscar nomination in 2003. Here she does nothing but annoy and frustrate both her daughters and the audience.

Mandy Moore is still sweet and adorable but the material she has to work with does her no favors. In fact the only characters I really enjoyed and or cared to watch besides the sisters, who are criminally deprived of screen time, was Gabriel Macht who plays Milly's guitar-wielding boy toy and Reverend Camden who plays his father. Stephen Collins especially really delivers here and I wish that the film itself had been better if not for the sheer excitement of seeing him in a movie. In fact when he's on screen with Keaton she's less irritating and a little more tolerable. There couch make-out session was a highlight and the audience is even given a glimmer of the charm we've come to love in Diane Keaton. Alas, the film is a flop and aside from a few very spread out chuckles and the appearance of Father Camden it's a complete drag and waste of an evening in. Skip this one and rent something with a little more substance and a lot more laughs. My one star is for Collins.

Leonardo DiCaprio puts a handsome face on an ugly industry: In parts of Africa, diamond mining fuels civil warfare, killing thousands of innocents and drafting preteen children as vicious soldiers. DiCaprio (The Departed) plays Danny Archer, a white African soldier-turned-diamond-smuggler who gets wind of a large raw jewel found by Solomon Vandy, a native fisherman (Djimon Hounsou, In America) recently escaped from enslavement by a brutal rebel leader. Archer offers a deal: He'll help Vandy find his war-scattered family if Vandy will share the diamond with him. Drawn into this web of exploitation is journalist Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly, Little Children), who agrees to help if Archer will tell her the details of how conflict diamonds make their way into the hands of the corporations who sell them to the Western world. DiCaprio is compelling because he never flinches from Archer's utter ruthlessness; Archer ends up doing the morally justifiable thing, but only because his desperate greed has led him to it. Hounsou and Connelly, though saddled with all the moral and political speeches, rise above the cant and keep the movie's treacherously formulaic plot rooted in human characters. But in the end, the story won't stick with you as much as the dead stillness in the child soldiers' eyes; the horror of African civil strife refuses to be contained by Blood Diamond's uplifting message--and the movie is all the more potent as a result. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars eye opening movie.......2007-06-27

This movie truly is an eye opener. Even though it is very hard to watch because of all of the killing, it is still a must see movie. Well written and well acted. I'm not a huge fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, but this movie made me think twice. Djimon Hansu is phenomenal. This movie shows the brutality of greed and power. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Human life is the currency of those powerful enough to control the blood diamond trade.......2007-06-23

Greed is the dark heart of "Blood Diamond," director Edward Zwick's ("Traffic," "The Last Samurai") uncompromising look into the underground trafficking of illegally-traded gems in sub-Saharan Africa. Greed of corrupt men for power, greed of an amoral mercenary willing to sacrifice anything for a chance to escape Africa, greed of Western businessmen who seek to artificially control the diamond market, and the greed of a simple man for his family's return. This movie powerfully demonstrates the valuelessness of a human life to those persons obsessed with blood diamond collection in war-ravaged Sierra Leone.

Djimon Hounsou plays Solomon Vandy, a simple fisherman and father of two who witnesses his idyllic existence crumble before his eyes. Rebels seeking new recruits, slaves, and random carnage swarm into his village. They select his adolescent son and other young men as future cadets in their guerilla army--following suitable brainwashing and manipulation techniques--before then getting down to the real business of slave collection. Seemingly devoid of any mental workings besides casual sadism, these bandits top-off their kidnapping and slave-taking exercise with the mutilation and execution of men deemed too troublesome for them to bother with. Vandy is rescued from dismemberment at the last minute when the rebels recognize his strength, seeing it as an asset they can utilize in their constant search for capital: the blood diamond pits. Condemned to toiling underneath the blazing sun with nary a chance of reaping any benefit (besides possible continued survival) for his efforts, Vandy happens to discover an egg-sized blood diamond hidden in the streambed. Hiding it underneath his foot, he buries it when the rebel encampment is attacked by government troops. The only witness to his "theft" is the wounded slave captain--now captured, along with Vandy, by government forces--who swears that the former fisherman will soon be begging to reveal the diamond's whereabouts.

Parallel to Djimon's character's storyline is the tale of Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio), an opportunistic solider of fortune caught within a dichotomy of conflicting motivation. He desires escape from Africa at any cost, yet secretly knows that his blood will someday mix with the earth of his homeland. Perhaps it is this realization that he is doomed which propels Archer forward: in every action and every word, he seems to be daring destiny to obliterate him. Taken in and trained from a young age by Colonel Coetzee (Arnold Vosloo), Archer is easily the most dangerous entity alive on the continent: ruthless, misanthropic, callous, manipulative, and incredibly lethal with bullet and blade. After a close-call haggling with rebel leaders over fair prices for blood diamonds, Archer is arrested for smuggling while crossing the Sierra Leone border. It is here that he intercepts the distraught Vandy and begins weaving a plan to save himself from the war-torn country: by dangling the freedom of the fisherman's family as bait to cajole Vandy into revealing the gigantic diamond's location. Solomon, though a simple man, is not so easily fooled. He eventually agrees to help Archer--but only if the mercenary agrees to help locate his family and also permit Solomon to be his travel companion.

There is barely time for indrawn breath during the watching of this movie. Action sequences are furious, brutal, and frequent. The pace of the movie is frenetic. The score is perfect throughout. The "education" of Vandy's son by the rebels is heart-wrenching. Solomon's overarching belief that fatherhood trumps all initially feels naïve, but is eventually revealed to be the singularly most powerful force in the entire movie. Danny's character--the realist mercenary who seems most capable of surviving, when compared to Vandy--shows the most evolution, shedding layers of the personality onion until an actual human appears. He is moved to reveal an element of his past to the beautiful American reporter (Jennifer Connelly), whose persistence and mutual survivorship cements a bond they both were too proud to admit from their first meeting. Archer and Vandy relationship morphs into something beautiful when a sacrifice is needed, prompting Solomon to reverse that remarkably chauvinistic statement made by Rudyard Kipling over one hundred years ago: the "white man's burden."

This is hands-down Djimon's most impressive performance: I have never seen him better represent a character. In fact, he blurs the line between character and actor, totally suspending my disbelief to the point where I "knew" him only as Vandy. I have been told by an acquaintance--currently living in Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia)--that DiCaprio's accent is spot-on. In addition, he was utterly believable as heartless mercenary, and his later transformation was also quite convincing. The action sequences were, as mentioned, jaw-dropping in their intensity, but never felt gratuitous or over-the-top.

Easily one of my five favorite movies of 2006--miss it, and you risk missing some of the finest cinematographic wizardry and directorial finesse of cinema from the last year, period.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent action sequences and an all around magnificent movie.......2007-06-22

The Blood Diamond has double meaning. An extremely bloody war is being funded by diamonds, and the stars of the movie are after a huge stone that has a red tint to it. Leonardo Dicaprio is after the diamond and Djimon Hounsou (named Solomon in the movie) agrees to show him where it is, but only goes along with Dicaprio so that he can find his son. Solomon's son has been been taken and made into a 10 year old rebel soldier. Jennifer Connelly plays a journalist and does a great job of using her charm to help forget about the war that is going on, even if it is just for a moment. The best parts are the action scenes. Solomon will do whatever he has to to get his son back, and likewise for Dicaprio with the diamond. It all leads to a very exciting ending.

There is great drama, a great story, and marvelous acting from everybody, but the action sequences stood out the most to me. The rebels seem to enjoy killing everyone and anyone. When they show up, expect to see some intense shoutouts. The 2 fight scenes are also good, mainly because Djimon Hounsou is such a superb actor. I wouldn't have minded seeing more of his rage. Dicaprio also gives an extraordinary performance. He may be better in this than he was in 'The Aviator'.

This is the best movie I have seen in at least a couple months, and I am a hardcore movie junkie. I don't like giving away too much in my reviews, in fact I always try to give away as little as possible. My rating sums up how I feel the best. This movie gets a perfect 5/5 from me. It is relentless, and I couldn't look away for a second. I can't believe I waited so long to finally watch this.

3 out of 5 stars HAHAHA!!! THIS MOVIE IS SOO FUNNY!!!!!.......2007-06-19

Im not saying that this movie is comedy, but Djimon Hounsou's acting JUST MADE ME LAUGHT UNTIL MY STOMACH HURTS. I mean... I know that his character is suffering because of his family but there are like three scenes that he COMPLETELY OVER-ACTED the whole situation about his family!(specially in the final fight scene). AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!AAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!

Another funny stuffs are the gore that is kind of fake, DiCaprios's dialoge sometime is cheesy, Connelly wasn't acting! she was modeling and the captions that even describes the music that will play on the movie!!

The movie has a lot of action scenes but this is more like drama, and the action is choreographied as war! so don't think that the action is this movie is the same as Last Samurai by the same director.
I gave it 3 stars because all of that, but the movie is still entertaining and easy to understand.

adios and have fun with this movie.

Doris Day, the perky, chaste adult star of an odd collection of winking 1960s sex comedies, takes the Irene Dunne role in this remake of the comedy classic My Favorite Wife. As the survivor of a five-year ordeal on a desert island, she returns home the very day her husband has remarried. James Garner, trading his Maverick impish humor and con man cool for a mugging performance of double takes and pratfalls, is her overjoyed husband who is too cowardly to tell his neurotic bride (Polly Bergen). All of this, naturally, leads to a ridiculously complicated plot that combines door-slamming sex farce with mistaken identities (Day poses as a Swedish masseuse) and a goofy sped-up car chase. Chuck Connors, who costars as Day's hunky, he-man island mate "Adam," leads a topnotch supporting cast that includes sassy Thelma Ritter as Garner's no-nonsense mother, Don Knotts as a nervous shoe salesman enlisted by Day to impersonate Adam, Fred Clark at his indignant best, and John Astin and Pat Harrington in early roles. Edgar Buchanan practically steals the film as a gruff, irascible judge who growls through the legal circus that forms the film's chaotic climax. The cast for the most part rises above the tepid script and bland direction and Day sings two songs. Interestingly, this remake was originally developed for Marilyn Monroe and Dean Martin as the never completed Something's Got to Give. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Doris Day/James Garner romantic comedy.......2007-06-28

MOVE OVER, DARLING (1963) offers delightful romantic comedy fun for fans of Doris Day and James Garner. This color and CinemaScope remake of the Irene Dunne-Cary Grant MY FAVORITE WIFE (1940) is so close to the B&W original that WIFE's writers get screenplay credit. DARLING is about a man (Garner) marrying his second wife (Polly Bergen) and honeymooning in a fancy Monterey hotel when his first wife (Day) shows up alive after a several year's absence. So we have a screwball comedy treatment of bigamy, with Bergen in suite C wondering why Garner keeps going to Doris in suite A or down to the hotel lobby for an all evening shave..

Whole scenes here are duplicated in WIFE, sometimes with the same dialogue. But I like DARLING more because it adds a wild car chase and a hilarious scene with Doris going in an open convertible through a carwash. And the supporting cast here is spectacular: Thelma Ritter, Fred Clark, Don Knotts, John Astin, Edgar Buchanan as the Judge, Chuck Connors as hunky "Adam", the list goes on. All are wonderful. WIFE cannot begin to match them, despite a good script.

MOVE OVER, DARLING is not a musical. There are no songs. But this was the 1960's, when Doris was making romantic comedies with (ironically) Cary Grant or James Garner, and not musicals. This started out as a vehicle called SOMETHING'S GOT TO GIVE, with Marilyn Monroe, and was left unfinished with Marilyn's tragic death in 1962. It was revamped a year later into DARLING with Day and Garner and Bergen. Complicating matters is that MY FAVORITE WIFE is itself a remake of the D. W. Griffith silent drama, ENOCH ARDEN (1911), based on the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson! That version plays complete at 35 minutes as a wonderful bonus with DARLING; it has been supplied from the Library of Congress.

Besides all that exists of ENOCH ARDEN, liberal bonuses with MOVE OVER, DARLING include a behind-the-scenes filmmaking documentary, a Marilyn vs. Doris featurette, and a welcome chat with a still-beautiful Polly Bergen. It's not a masterpiece, but still one of Doris Day's most enjoyable films. Love that carwash scene and Don Knotts playing a shoe salesman sex symbol!

Determination, faith, and optimism are powerful forces that enable individuals to positively affect the lives of themselves and others. Christy, a captivating 1994 television series based on the book by Catherine Marshall and reminiscent of the Anne of Green Gables and Little House on the Prairie series, is the story of an idealistic 19-year-old woman named Christy Huddleston (Kellie Martin) who sets out for the wilderness of the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee in 1912 on a mission to educate the children of the remote community of Cutter Gap. A well-to-do girl raised in the city, Christy is shocked and completely unprepared for the extreme poverty, ignorance, and superstitious tendencies of Cutter Gap's people, but resolves to persevere in her commitment to better the lives of her young students. Each day brings a fresh lesson for the children and a new struggle that inspires Christy to draw upon and re-examine her own faith while striving to disprove local superstitions and replace long-held animosities and prejudices with virtues like forgiveness and respect. Christy is surrounded by a handful of allies in Cutter Gap that include fellow missionary Miss Alice Henderson (Tyne Daly), whom she idolizes for her strength, resolve, and mentorship; Fairlight Spencer (Tess Harper), a local woman who offers Christy the rare gift of friendship; mission preacher Reverend David Grantland (Randall Batinkoff), a hard worker who immediately becomes smitten with Christy; and local Doctor Neil MacNeill (Stewart Finlay-McLennan) whose gruff manner and atheistic beliefs both confuse and excite Christy. Eventually, Christy finds she's fallen in love with both Reverend Grantland and Doctor MacNeill and embarks on a very personal journey toward maturity while simultaneously succeeding in her quest to educate the children of Cutter Gap and affect significant positive change throughout the entire community. 5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......... Just a Wonderful Production.......2007-07-03

This TV series is a wonderful production. I as the rest of the world first saw this on TV in the 1990's and was delighted when it was put out on DVD. I am so glad that they put such wonderful productions on DVD for both young and old alike to enjoy for years to come.
This production is a must have in you private collection it is truly a delight to own and watch whenever one would like.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-27

They just don't make good family programs like this anymore. My whole family has really enjoyed this series.

5 out of 5 stars Great family series.......2007-06-14

The original Christy series with Kelly Martin is the best and while this is a great set to own and watch over and over again, it's disppointing that the story was never finished until much later, and with another star playing Christy - just not the same! Despite that, these episodes are worth owning to watch over and over again. Christy struggles with spiritual issues just like the rest of us and the best lesson learned from all this is despite our flawed humanity, God still loves us and wants to use us for His good.

4 out of 5 stars Christy - The Complete Series.......2007-06-11

An enjoyable family series to watch. It would have been nice if the producers could have finished the series instead of leaving you hanging. The replacement series did not do this justice as the characters, location and theme felt like another story altogether.

This Western has become a modest cult favorite since its release in 1993, when the film was met with mixed reviews but the performances of Kurt Russell (as Wyatt Earp) and especially Val Kilmer, for his memorably eccentric performance as the dying gunslinger Doc Holliday, garnered high praise. The movie opens with Wyatt Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called the Cowboys has burst on the scene, and Earp can't keep his gun belt off any longer. The plot sounds routine, and in many ways it is, but Western buffs won't mind a bit thanks to a fine cast and some well-handled action on the part of Rambo director George P. Cosmatos, who has yet to make a better film than this. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Your Brother's Not Always Right..........2007-06-30

But he's always your brother and that's the central theme of Tombstone. I was trying to think of a way I could be a little more detached about his movie than I feel like being, but there's no point in trying to do so. The fact is that this is a wonderful film with a wonderful story line and wonderful acting. Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday sucks out all the oxygen in every scene he's in (and even a few where he's off camera). He is devoted to his best friend Wyatt Earp for many reasons but chiefly because he's one of the only friends that he has. Admittedly, this is only a semi-historically accurate portrait of Holliday but the sacrifices he makes for the Earp brothers are touching and admirable. In my mind, the gambler/dentist is the perfect embodiment of loyalty and honor. These are very politically incorrect virtues so we must be thankful that some element of pop culture decided to enshrine them somewhere. Independent of its symbolic and emotional resonance, Tombstone is just a plain old good time. Whatever you want to call it--an action pic, a western or a drama--it's superb and fantastic cinema.

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie!!!.......2007-06-13

Tombstone is one of my favorite movies!!! I thought it was about time I bought the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Tombstone is tops.......2007-06-11

This movie is very close to the actual circumstances of the OK Corral. Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot (who is so perfect in westerns it makes you wonder if he was time shifted from 1880!!), and Bill Paxton are great! Then you see some of the actors from classic western movies and TV back as older men. Another one that we have memorized the lines to and still have to watch it each time it is on the satellite!! If you've never seen it....buy it, pop some popcorn, pour some butter on it and turn on the home theater!!

5 out of 5 stars Tombstone review.......2007-06-08

Excellent movie. Hard to beat if you are a true western fan. Amazon service is great!

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2007-06-05

This movie is absolutely awesome. Sure, that sounds like a young awe struck boy in its description of the film, but that is what it reduced me to. Some of the best one-liners of all-time, and a great chemistry between the always solid Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer. Kilmer is at his best as the Consumption addled (read TB) Doc Holliday. This is a novie that I have never heard a bad thing about, even though the discussions almost always involve guys. Really a fun and well-made film. One of the few movies that I can watch time and time again. A 5 star classic. Enjoy!!!

Sir Jeremy Isaacs highly deserves the numerous awards for documentaries he has earned: the Royal Television Society's Desmond Davis Award, l'Ordre National du Mérit, an Emmy, and a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II. His epic The World at War remains unsurpassed as the definitive visual history of World War II.

The Second World War was different from other wars in thousands of ways, one of which was the unparalleled scope of visual documents kept by the Axis and Allies of all their activities. As a result, this war is understood as much through written histories as it is through its powerful images. The Nazis were particularly thorough in documenting even the most abhorrent of the atrocities they were committing--in a surprising amount of color footage. The World at War was one of the first television documentaries that exploited these resources so completely, giving viewers an unbelievable visual guide to the greatest event in the 20th century. This is to say nothing of the excellent, comprehensible narrative. Some highlights:

The World at War will remain the definitive visual history of World War II, analogous to Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. No serious historian should be missing The World at War in a collection, and no student should leave school without having seen at least some of its salient episodes. Rarely is film so essential. --Erik J. Macki

5 out of 5 stars Surely the best?.......2007-06-25

For me, as a British viewer this is almost like the `authorised' documentary television series about The Second World War. Considering the fact that most of the participants in this conflict, as young men and women were now middle-aged at the time of the production of this series in the early 1970's; they could relate their individual experiences which for them would have been recent memories.

American viewers criticize the lack of emphasis on the war in the Pacific. At the time, long before the concept of home video, cable and satellite television was conceivable I'm sure it was thought very unlikely that this excellent series would ever tempt the American broadcasting networks to buy it. So therefore it is not surprising that the series emphasises the war from the British point of view.

As there was little British, or British empire participation in the Pacific theatre it can hardly come as a surprise that the bitter conflict in Burma, Malaya and New Guinea should hold our primary attention. Should the series be made today, with the avowed intention of making a documentary series that would have to be sold around the world to recoup production costs alone, the story would more encompassing in its scope.

Please don't forget that the war began for Britain and France when Nazi Germany invaded Poland in September 1939 and the security of the British people and homeland did not finally arrive until the surrender of Germany in May 1945. Our focus was on the war in Europe and the Soviet Union. The war in the Pacific was a dim and distant event for the "Blacked-out" and severely rationed British people more concerned with the daily struggle just to keep body and soul together.

2 out of 5 stars Just okay ..........2007-06-19

The very first episode was great ... after that it was hit and miss. I found multiple times I wanted to fall asleep on some episodes, but stayed awake out of some desire to feel I watched the whole thing. It is also narrated from a British perspective, and so as an American, I found little to entertain my appetite. Especially Pacific theatre combat with the Americans was almost none existent, as if British combat and especially in Burma was the only real thing that happened. It does have good insights into the Nazi's and rewards itself here and there, but overall I think the British slant and focus ruined the series.

I also found it humorous that the narrator tried to label Hitler as "right-wing" when he was a Socialist dictator. What?

5 out of 5 stars World at War--Good look at history!.......2007-06-18

World at War is a classic! The combination of high-level policymakers' viewpoints and individual citizens' and soldiers' viewpoints gives excellent understanding of the events and issues. I highly recommend it for individuals or classes who want to learn about WWII.

5 out of 5 stars The Worlod at War.......2007-05-13

A fabulous review of WW II through the eyes of the British. Complements the "Vistory at Sea" series.

4 out of 5 stars WWII Done Right.......2007-05-13

I bought this set because it was so darned cheap. I forgot how good this series was. It's well worth the price. The only bad thing about it is that sometimes the video hangs or skips for a few seconds. It is something to see the real players in WWII tell their story in color. I'm very pleased with it.

Following the successful 1998 video release of Cats comes another Andrew Lloyd Webber blockbuster musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and it's a savvy choice. It hasn't been represented on film before, it's short enough (78 minutes) to present without cuts, and it has the star power of former teen icon Donny Osmond, who played over 1,800 performances across North America. Rather than record a live performance, Cats director David Mallet conceived Joseph as a film, though one that is based strongly on codirector Steven Pimlott's 1991 London revival and relies more on camerawork than venturing beyond its stagelike sets.

Lloyd Webber's first project with lyricist Tim Rice was originally written in 1968 as a school cantata; accordingly, this film uses a framing sequence of a school recital, with an audience of clapping, singing kids and members of the faculty playing the roles. The Old Testament tale of Joseph and his coat of many colors gets a splashy, vigorous treatment with an energetic cast, Las Vegas-style glitz, and catchy, eclectic songs, including "Any Dream Will Do," "Close Every Door," the peppy "Go, Go, Go Joseph," and various bits of country, calypso, and Elvis. Osmond is perfect in the title role, with a strong voice and winning persona, while London stage veteran Maria Friedman performs well in the central role of the narrator. Richard Attenborough appears (and sings a little) as Jacob, and Joan Collins makes a brief, nonsinging cameo.

Joseph certainly isn't revolutionary musical theater, but if you view it as a kids' show, it's a silly good time (though there are poignant moments too). Parents should note, however, that this production might warrant a little discretion due to one suggestive scene and some risqué costumes. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars terrific!.......2007-06-18

my kids and I have viewed this MANY times since we received it. my only complaint is the variability in sound quality - very hard to hear the first part.

3 out of 5 stars Donny is awesome ... and that's pretty much it........2007-05-23

Make sure you read the Amazon Ediorial Review of this product before you buy it. This is not a typical stage production of this musical. Instead of filming a live stage production as it was performed, it was filmed more like a movie. This is not a negative part of my review, just one to be aware of.

Donny Osmond's does a fabulous job as Joseph, which is the main highlight of the DVD.

I didn't rate it more than three stars for two main reasons. The sound quality is very poor, for one. However, my main complaint is risque Potiphar scene. I was warned beforehand and watched that scene before allowing my kids to. I'm glad I did, because I'd never want my kids to see that scene. The costumes the women wear make them look naked. I bought the DVD because my kids and I are doing this musical at our church and because I have always loved Joseph's story. Yet I'm saddened that Hollywood had to make something Biblical into something so risque that no child should ever see. Potiphar's wife did try to seduce Joseph, so I have no problem with telling that part of the story. It just doesn't have to be portrayed the way it was in this DVD.

3 out of 5 stars Not Appropriate Family Entertainment.......2007-05-15

Let me start by stating this is perrenial favorite of mine. I've attended several productions of this from Tuacahn to high school productions. My daughters drove me nuts playing the soundtrack. I finally broke down and bought the DVD.

Let me also state that we have high Christian standards. This did not meet those standards. My wife and I both flinched several times while viewing this version.

Some of the costume are very risque' and some of the behaviors are very inappropriate. The Potipahr's wife scene was just short of brazen nudity and overly sexual.

The narrator was not up to the caliber of other performances I've seen and Richard Attenborough did a mediocre job as Jacob. Donny Osmond played Joseph well and continues to deliver the level of vocal performance he was known for in the 70's.

I liked the sets and the creativity, although a 'for film' version would have been nice.

The sound was poor. We had to adjust it several times during our viewing, especially in the beginning.

Minus one star for inappropriate material. Minus one star for poor sound. My wife and I rate this at PG-13, drifting slightly towards R.

5 out of 5 stars The Best .......2007-05-14

This is the best version of Joseph ever. The DVD is almost as great as the live performances!

5 out of 5 stars Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.......2007-05-13

We had this movie before and wore it out watching it. I had to buy another one. It is still the best movie I have seen in a long time. Wish I had seen it in person.

The Last Castle rides high on a wave of American patriotism, respectful of military service and protocol, and primed to ignite anyone's passion for justice against corrupted ideals. This intense prison drama begins when a court-martialed three-star general (Robert Redford) is sentenced to military prison for defying a presidential command. The prison's warden (James Gandolfini) is a jealous martinet who's never seen combat, and when the jailed general seizes command of the prison to protest the warden's abuse of power, The Last Castle erupts toward a classic showdown between integrity and cowardice. Former critic and West Point graduate R
