At Last!.......2007-04-23

Well, I thought it would never come out on DVD. Perhaps it's my passion for all things ancient Egyptian, but I have always loved this wonderfully enjoyable epic. Howard Hawks was a director who always refused to be pigeon-holed, making everything from Bogey's "The Big Sleep" to sci-fi classic "The Thing" (although he credited screenwriter Christian Nyby instead of himself) to stock car racing "Red Line 7000." Here he takes a shot at "historical" epic and does a damned entertaining job of it. Pharaoh Jack Hawkins plays straightman to Joan Collins' campy concubine while James Robertson Justice does a terrific job of keeping a straight face as a tomb architect. Amidst all the stone monuments, the only thing wooden is Dewey Martin as Justice's son. All this may not sound like a **** movie, but it's a guilty pleasure I've watched so many times on VHS that it's embarrassing. That's gotta be worth extra credit.

Am sure that we all are glad that finally TIME/WARNER decided to release this Movie on DVD. Hopefully soon followed by other long neglected films of the 1950th vintage. Like "THE EGYPTIAN" and "VALLEY OF THE KINGS," (ALL STILL GATHERING "STAR DUST," ON THE TIME/WARNER FILM LIBRARY VAULT).

The screenplay for this CLASSIC MOVIE was written by no other than the great American literary genius: "WILLIAM FAULKNER."

Director Howard Hawks, worked brilliantly on this large scale epic, a gigantic production filmed on location in Egypt, using thousands of extras. This movie plot would take you to the time of the building of the Great pyramid at Giza, for Pharaoh Khufu, this Pharaoh is been played here by Jack Hawkings (who also starred on the epic film "Ben Hur.")

Also as the Pharaoh's second wife mistress, you can see the sexy newly arrival to Hollywood of "Joan Collins" (in one of her first starring roles) long before her "Dynasty's Persona Character," whose insatiable lust-greed, would lead to murder, betrayal and much more on this movie plot.

"Land of the Pharaohs" is a very entertaining film, which along with the story featuring the saga of an slaved conquered nation, one which is finally allowed to return to their promise land along with their fellow architect, the designer of this "Seven Wonder of the World," after the death of the conquering Pharaoh. All of them set free by a benevolent "High Priest," upon the completion and sealing of the Great Pyramid as this wonderfull film ends.

"Land of the Pharaohs" with detailed sets, some showing the intrircate complex pyramid's inner labyrinths, booby traped as so no one can learn this Pyramid secrets; along with these film vast desert vistas which so marvelous fill the screen for you, are all very astonishing to the eye in grandeur.

I srongly recomend this film, particularly if it is now finally been released on an "Anamorphic Widescreen DVD Format" fully restored for color and sound, in order to preserve the aspect ratio of its original grand theatrical exhibition presentation in Cinemascope.

Am sure that the late Henry Luce (Yale alumnus & founder of "Time/Life Inc.") would have felt very proud that this long overdue film, written by William Faulkner, would at last see the light of day once more, for all of us collectors of classic movies to own, therefore on account of all this "Thank you TIME/WARNER."

Lara inspires lechery in Komarovsky (her mother's lover who is a master at surviving whoever runs Russia) and can't compete with passion for the revolution of the man she marries, Pasha. Her true love is Zhivago who also loves his wife. Lara is the one who inspires poetry. The story is narrated by Zhivago's half brother Yevgraf, who has made his career in the Soviet Army. At the beginning of the film he is about to meet a young woman he believes may be the long lost daughter of Lara and Zhivago.

Based on Boris Pasternak's Nobel Prize-winning novel, David Lean's second masterpiece (after "Lawrence of Arabia") is a sumptuous, absorbing epic in the grand tradition of filmmaking. Sharif and Christie (often glimpsed in adoring close-ups) are ravishing to watch, as Lean turns an earth-shattering moment in world history into high romantic drama. Brimming with unforgettable images of the Russian steppes captured by Oscar-winning lensman Carlo Ponti, Lean's snowy, romantic spectacle is just what the "Doctor" ordered, with marvelous ensemble work by Rod Steiger, Alec Guinness, Tom Courtenay, and Klaus Kinski.

Got exactly what I asked for when I asked for it.......2007-06-08

I forgot my step-dad's 60th birthday and had to overnight/express ship this DVD set to him and it actually ended up working out better than if I had remembered. He has wanted this movie for years because he went to the premier in the 60's on the east coast. He was home when it arrived on a Saturday and he ended up feeling more special because of all of the fuss and the hand delivery by FedEx. The film is stunning, as ever. I borrowed it as soon as my parents had watched it and it held up beautifully on my HDTV (61" screen) which I did not expect. I was highly satisfied with the whole process and the product. I completely recommend using the ticker on items that tells you how soon you can get them anywhere in the country - fabulous little feature. Excellent service.

Brilliant? Hardly!.......2007-05-21

David Lean was in over his head with this film adaptation of the historic book by Pasternak. There is absolutely no justification for this movie to be so long since it hardly touches the complexities of its source. When I saw the film during its original release, I wondered why it was taking so long to get to the point. I never did get the "point". Then again I don't understand all the fuss around "Gone With the Wind" either.

The performances by Shariff and Christie were amazing. By that I mean that it appeared that they were filmed separately performing their roles, then the results were edited together. Talk about no chemistry!

Yes the cinematography is grand, however, the music score is minimalistic.

If you enjoy daytime soap operas, then you might enjoy this film.

Many scenes have been cut out. I saw the origninal movie when it originaly came out and this is NOT original.

Do not buy this version if you want the original version. I wish I knew where to get the original.

This 1975 film sits near the top of any list of the best films of the 1970s, perhaps in the top five and, in some people's minds, at the pinnacle itself. Robert Altman, at his most Altmanesque, spins together plot strands involving two dozen people over the course of one particularly busy weekend in Music City, USA. Though several of the story lines deal with country-western stars--played by Henry Gibson, Ronee Blakley and Karen Black--the plot also deals with the country scene's wannabes, the business people who pull the strings and the operative for a mysterious presidential candidate who is trying to get the de facto endorsement of some of the country stars by having them appear at a rally for him. (The unknown but rocketing presidential aspirant was eerily echoed the next year, when Jimmy Carter came out of nowhere to win the presidency.) Blakley is heartbreakingly fragile as a Loretta Lynn-like singer on the verge of total mental meltdown, while Lily Tomlin is outstanding as a housewife-gospel singer who has a dalliance with a randy folk-rock cad, perfectly played by Keith Carradine (who won an Oscar for his song "I'm Easy"). The cast also includes Jeff Goldblum, Scott Glenn, Keenan Wynn, Shelley Duvall, Geraldine Chaplin (hilarious as a fatuous British TV journalist), Barbara Harris, Michael Murphy, and Ned Beatty, with cameos by Elliott Gould and Julie Christie as themselves. One of the greatest films of the 1970s--or any decade-- Altman's sprawling masterpiece cleverly satirizes both the wholesome image of the country-music industry and the values of the Me Generation. But the enduring strength of the film lies in the hands and hearts of the many talented actors-- Lily Tomlin, Ned Beatty, Jeff Goldblum, Karen Black, and Shelley Duvall, to name a few, who populate this rich cinematic mosaic. Real-life singer Ronee Blakely stands out as a troubled star modeled after Loretta Lynn. In yet another grand Altman-esque gesture, the actors composed their own songs for "Nashville" --and what a soundtrack it is!

NASHVILLE.......2007-05-12

This is probably my favoirte 'modern' film. It's not my favorite all-time film, that is still SUNSET BLVD, but this one, taken at its original release, was the most innovative, stunning picture I'd ever seen. It's fragmentary, non-linear plotline, dazzling collection of actors, and incredible diretorial style was miles beyond anything else on the planet in '75. The things that Altman did here were radical, then, and have influenced filmmaking ever since. Such highly praised crap as PULP FICTION and CRASH wouldn't exist if it wasn't for NASHVILLE. Their over-hyped directorial styles are just copies of this original. Of course, i'm a total sucker for most of the other Altmans, too.
The lower rating is because of the quality of the disc, a very early dvd (and laser,) with no extras... no commentary, on a film that cries out for one.

The Emperor's New Clothes..........2007-05-02

Why is everybody slobbering all over themselves about what a great film this is? It has moments that are interesting and worthwhile but it's so nebulous, slow and decidedly not "country" that I for one can't recommend it as being worth nearly three hours of one's time. Overall, what crappy singing for a movie about Music City! While country music generally isn't all that intellectually profound or politically astute, its stars (especially in the 60s and 70s before it went down the cartoon cookie-cutter toilet), were musically talented and believed in what they were singing. Henry Gibson, Lily Tomlin, and Karen Black together couldn't carry a tune in a bucket if all three were holding on to it for dear life! Ronee Blakely does do a credible job as a singer and her character at least approaches believability as a tragic country ingenue, but as for the rest of them, come on! I wonder how many of the 5 star reviewers heaping praise on this film actually come from the south or grew up on country music? Merle Haggard, George Jones, Willie and Waylon, Tom T. Hall, Hank Jr, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and many others were at or near the top of their game in '75 and a lot of their songs are musically worthwhile, whatever one may think of the lyrics or perspective. This film plays like an uninitiated outsider's simplistic, if fairly lighthanded, take on what makes middle America tick. I actually find a lot of Altman's work to be somewhat overrated and what some call genius, I tend to see as rudderless wandering in need of a spirited editor.

In all fairness to the late director though, other Nashville reviewers are correct when they point out that the laid back sensibilties of the 70s are lamentably long gone in this often nightmarishly visceral 21st century world of ours. As such, the fact that this film has not aged well is not altogether Altman's fault; I think that the attention span of the average moviegoer 30+ years ago was probably much better suited to a meandering film like this. Ultimately, it's really the bad country music that I reject more than anything. All in all, I don't regret having watched Nashville, I just can't help but question the glowing praise that smacks of dreamy courtesans in the midst of the emperor's new clothes...

GOING TO THE COUNTRY-MUSIC THAT IS.......2007-04-18

The late Robert Altman was the past master of weaving a simple plot line and existential characters in order to form very interesting slices of the life in the American experience, with a wry sense of humor about that experience to boot. Shortly before his death he had produced Prairie Home Companion, essentially a Midwestern version of the presently reviewed film Nashville. He had an ear and an eye for the sometimes absurd characters who are part of the American landscape and those senses do not fail him here, although there is just a touch of datedness in the story line of the film.

Of course, the subject here, given away by the title, is a look at country music, as least how it looked in 1975, intertwined with a indeterminate but assumingly populist presidential campaign by a third party candidate. The mix of politics and music is an interesting choice although whether the electoral campaign could stand in for that of ex-Alabama Governor George Wallace on the right or an insurgent Eugene McCarthy-type campaign on the left is far from clear, probably purposefully so. All the characters one would expect when one's only sense of the Nashville country music scene is the Grand Old Opry are here; the mainstream male and female country singers modeled on George Jones and Loretta Lynn; the country folk `crashers' trying to cash in on the popularity of genre; the wannabes working the open mikes off the main street in order to get a break; and, the truly talentless all striving to get ahead in the dog eat dog but lucrative world of country music. All looking for the main chance. All driven to be on a stage somewhere in front of some audience even if that of an eccentric presidential candidate. The sub-plot, which in the end holds the action together, is the random violence afoot then, as now, that is seemingly an endemic part of the American Way.

There are several outstanding musical performances highlighted by the film's Loretta Lynn character, Ronee Blaklee. Her rendition of Dues still sounds good after over 30years. Try to find her work. The late Vassar Clements on the fiddle also should receive kudos.

haunting and brilliant.............2007-04-10

NASHVILLE is a film you have to see to believe. Director Robert Altman weaves together the lives of 24 people, during five days at a music festival that coincides with the presidential campaign of a mysterious candidate. The film is as much social commentary as it is a tribute to the culture of country music. It is, both, dramatically compelling and darkly comedic, with plenty of curveballs thrown into the mix. NASHVILLE is an all star cast of too many names for me to mention, here, but that isn't what makes it so good. It is an example of storytelling, at its best......

This comes close to being the worse piece of garbage it has ever been my privilege to view. The acting...HORRENDOUS!!! CGI...poorly done. Do yourself a favor and watch the Roman version of the Odyssey...Ulysses with Kirk Douglas. It may be an oldie, but it's definitely an absolute goodie!!

Mythological Fiction.......2007-05-26

This film is one of the better of this genre--due to the casting, and the more "true to life and literature" approach that is taken. The characters seem much more "human." Enough sexual content, albeit well done, to preclude viewing by even teenagers. Homer's story is followed pretty faithfully, too, from my distant memories. But the real "excellence" is in the acting.

The Movie in itself is a great movie however, there were a few times that the movie stopped and digital quality became distorted. I did not send it back because I did not want to go through with hassling of shipping it back. Let's just let bygones be bygones.:)

A good tool but not a replacement for the real thing..........2007-05-13

Entertaining and they didn't add "extra" stuff, but a lot of details & characters are missing. I let my students watch selections from this film before reading The Odyssey. It was an effective motivation tool: Students put faces to characters when we read the real thing, had an idea where the story was "going," and it was neat when they noticed the differences.

This movie is fabulous. Anyone who is a fan of greek mythology or the Roman era would love this movie.
I cannot get enough of Armande Asante and this movie portrays him in a way that would make any woman drool.
Definitely a great buy. {^_^}

I love Oscar Wilde, and this is one of my favorite works. His typical satire of high society, love, morality, and marriage are by no means lost in this work.

This film (unlike most adaptations) does a great job at staying true to its print version. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I liked the 1952 verson more. Maybe it's because that's the version I grew up with, but whatever the case maybe, do yourself a favor and check that one out as well. It's just as funny and just as charming if not more. this just could not fail with me. I love Oscar Wilde and this story. I love Rupert Everett and Colin Firth. Put them all in one movie together and what you have is a delightful production complete with wonderful sets, costumes and actors who know how to deliver Mr. Wilde's acerbic wit with brilliance. If you're not acquainted with Oscar Wilde's work this is a good place to start. Then move on to "An Ideal Husband" with the, again, fabulous Rupert Everett and the ever charming Jeremy Northam. You'll not be disappointed!

i love this movie!!! it is really funny.i love the parts when Gwendolyn (Frances O'Connor) is driveing and the bike is faster then her and the parts when Algy (Rupert Everett) and Jack (Colin Firth) fight over food (i'll try not to tell you about that much ) there are alot more funny parts !!!!!!! i love colin firth and reese witherspoon (who plays cecily) this is one of my fave movies 2 thumbs up !!!!!!

The legend of Pocahontas and John Smith receives a luminous and essential retelling by maverick filmmaker Terrence Malick. The facts of Virginia's first white settlers, circa 1607, have been told for eons and fortified by Disney's animated films: explorer Smith (Colin Farrell) and the Native American princess (newcomer Q'orianka Kilcher) bond when the two cultures meet, a flashpoint of curiosity and war lapping interchangeably at the shores of the new continent. Malick, who took a twenty year break between his second and third films (Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line), is a master of film poetry; the film washes over you, with minimal dialogue (you see characters speak on camera for less than a quarter of the film). The rest of the words are a stream-of-consciousness narration--a technique Malick has used before but never to such degree, creating a movie you feel more than watch. The film's beauty (shot in Virginia by Emmanuel Lubezki) and production design (by Jack Fisk) seems very organic, and in fact, organic is a great label for the movie as a whole, from the dreadful conditions of early Jamestown (it makes you wonder why Englishman would want to live there) to the luminescent love story. Malick is blessed with a cast that includes Wes Studi, August Schellenberg, Christopher Plummer, and Christian Bale (who, curiously, was also in the Disney production). Fourteen-year-old Kilcher, the soul of the film, is an amazing find, and Farrell, so often tagged as the next big thing, delivers his first exceptional performance since his stunning debut in Tigerland. James Horner provides a fine score, but is overshadowed by a Mozart concerto and a recurring prelude from Wagner's Das Rheingold, a scrumptious weaving of horns fit to fuel the gentle intoxication of this film. Note: the film was initially 150 minutes, and then trimmed to 135 by Malick before the regular theatrical run. It was also the first film shot in 65mm since Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet. --Doug Thomas

Great film making.......2007-06-29

My first reaction when I began to watch this movie was "holy crap what did they do with the plot?" Basically you will either love or hate this one. I think it's very thought provoking and very interestingly put together. If you have seen The Thin Red Line then you are well aware of the brooding, epic film making this director is capable of. Each shot is carefully chosen and very artful. I was kind of bored up to the part where John Smith vanishes, and then out popped Christian Bale and I thought I'd stick around for the rest. Overall this was a very well researched film and it is very beautiful. You just have to give it a chance, it is very long and moves at a slow, even pace. I imagine watching this a second time I will enjoy it more and actually pay attention to the beginning. Definitely worth a look, and definitely underappreciated.

It's a graceful but not engaging world........2007-06-23

The scenery is naturally lovely, and poetic. That's the greatest strength of this film. Half of the movie is about the relationship between Pocahontas and Captain John Smith (Colin Farrell). The trouble is I do not sense any love between them at all. Even though the director took a lot of time to depict the chemistry between them. It's more like reading the biography of Pocahontas.

It's worth renting not buying.

Ghost is still the only title on my list of Best Love Story movies of all time.

Not a New World.......2007-06-21

Up front, this is Malick quoting himself, usually a cautionary note if you listen respectfully to old Pablo Picasso. I loved Thin Red Line, whose meditative mode and range of characters were compelling. This is a curious bit of retelling at this stage of his career, methinks. Those who deem the telling as sluggish are right on the money. I saw this in Tunis, in French, which I dont speak. That granted, I doubt I missed any subtelties. The cast looked a little too movie box for comfort, especially since so much attention had been given to the sets. The guy has a sweet way with the camera, but has brought nothing enlightening to the information.

A story told different.......2007-06-19

I throughly enjoyed this movie. It approached the story realistically. It told the story in a way I haven't seen in any other films. And it gave respect to the ways of the Native Americans that I know. Life does not always have a happy ending, but we can find beauty in trials of life.

The New World Film Review.......2007-06-14

Just finished watching "The New World" and am sad to say that it was a very poor movie indeed. The 2-minute trailer shows the only 2 minutes of the movie that are worth watching. The film has a decent opening but goes downhill from there. The movie continually flashed back and forth from different situations that are out of chronological order, making the final result a hard-to-piece-together jumbled pack load of vaguely related scenes. The MPAA Rating on the box boasts "intense battle sequences", which turned out to be 2-3 minutes of poorly choreographed shooting. Frankly, I've seen better fight scenes from a 1920's John Wayne film. The last hour and a half of the film has no plot whatsoever and drags on with very little dialogue and lots of pathetic loud harmonic music that reminded me of the 20-minute pans around the individual starships in the original "STAR TREK" movie. It draws to a rushed ending leaving many pressing questions about the "plot" unanswered. If you're looking for a good movie, this isn't it.

Took me back in time.......2007-07-03

I loved these movies when they came out in the theater and I love them watching them on my DVD player at home. Always funny with fantastic sword fighting - much better than most of what we see today. No CGI fight garbage, just cool and realistic fights.

Best of the best.......2007-06-13

My father took me to see these movies when they were playing at the theaters. These are truer to the Alexander Dumas classic than any other cinematic version I have seen since... and far more entertaining. While I like Charlie Sheen, Keifer Sutherland, Oliver Platt, and the other actors that appeared in the Hollywoodized remake, their take on The Three Musketeers left so much to be desired. Michael York, Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain, Christopher Lee, etc. gave a far more realistic feel while still providing humor and great swordplay.

Excellent!.......2007-05-14

I saw The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers when I was seven, loved them then, and was very impressed with the DVD set. The discs have good sound quality and lighting, both of which had been problems with previous reproductions of the films. (An outdoor night scene in a rainstorm in The Three Muskteers had been particularly bad; it is now vastly improved.)

As for the films themselves, what can be said? The acting is top notch: Heston is a fantastic, understated Richelieu, York seems to have been born to play D'Artagnan, and everyone else is cast perfectly as well. (Okay, maybe Raquel Welch isn't all that great, but when you look like that, who cares about your acting.) The action sequences are a cut above most swordfighting in movies, especially the martial arts choreography on wires that passes for swordplay in movies now. Grand, sweeping, epic, yet very good at establishing characters, both movies are musts for fans of the books. (If you have the Disney "Young Guns" version of The Three Musketeers with Sheen, Sutherland, et al, chuck it out the window or use it as a coaster. Get this one instead.)

Slapstick comedy.......2007-04-26

Warning. This movie is a parody of the book. If you where inspired by and loved the adventures of D'Artagnan in the book, do not watch this movie. I had to turn the movie off in disgust after 20 minutes. It is a goofy slapstick comedy. There is nothing wrong with comedy. But when it's based on a book with the caliber of romantic heroes such as D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis - that is a crime.

Alexander Dumas wrote two great books; The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. I encourage you to read the books instead of watching the movies.

Beautifuful customs and ambience.......2007-03-19

This is, without doubt, the best movie of the Three Musketeers available (of course, for the whole book adaptation one has to see the Four Musketeers as well: the book is very long). It is reasonably faithful to the original, and the actors are great, but one of the things I liked more about the movie(s) is the extremely detailed and careful ambience (although mainly Spanish, not French). From the laundry rooms at the palace, to the taverns, the lodgings at Messieur Bonancieux's horrible Inn, the palace of the Duke of Buckingham, etc. And the customs are also great. This movie was made with great care to this type of detail. Perhaps few pay attention to this sort of thing, after so many years of cheap Disney's scenarios and customs, but to me this is about 70% of a period movie. It is also quite funny, with gags and little details that keep you smiling or laughing. Rachel Welch accepts a role of a silly, clumsy maiden, which although unusual is done brilliantly. A must see, I think

Martin Scorsese does not sound like the logical choice to direct an adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel about manners and morals in New York society in the 1870s. But these are mean streets, too, and the psychological violence inflicted between characters is at least as damaging as the physical violence perpetrated by Scorsese's usual gangsters. At the center of the tale is Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis), a somewhat diffident young man engaged to marry the very respectable May Welland (Winona Ryder). But Archer is distracted by May's cousin, the Countess Olenska (a radiant Michelle Pfeiffer), recently returned from Europe. As a married woman seeking a divorce, the countess is an embarrassment to all of New York society. But Archer is fascinated by her quick intelligence and worldly ways. Scorsese closely observes the tiny details of this world and this impossible situation; this is a movie in which the shift of someone's eyes can be as significant as the firing of a gun. The director's sense of color has never been keener, and his work with the actors is subtle. An absolutely beautiful movie............a Scorsese masterpiece in every detail. Ranks with Wuthering Heights in its depiction of unrequited love, but much more visually stunning. Daniel Day-Lewis is a truly outstanding actor. After my first viewing, this is one of my favorite all-time movies.

There aren't enough stars for the most powerful film I've ever seen.......2007-05-15

I firmly believe that this is the greatest film ever made; it is surely the greatest I have ever seen, and over several decades I've seen many. It's one of the most powerful works of art I've experienced in any form.

I can still recall vividly the first time that I saw it. It was at a matinee viewing at a theater in downtown Philadelphia. The audience was me, my then-wife, and about a gazillion sweet little old ladies, median age of about 73. The audience observed stone silence throughout the showing; not a whisper, not a popcorn-rustle. I (and I suspect several other people) left the theater with new appreciation of the emotional power of film.

What makes this film so uniquely powerful is that it so perfectly depicts that most powerful of emotions: love. I tend to be an impatient critic of most romantic films, which I find manipulative and unbelievable. I can't believe in a film romance simply because violins well up when two attractive people look at each other. But this film, unlike any other I know of, vividly documents the experience of falling in love: the way that the mind seizes upon the words and the gestures of one woman alone, finding something unique, intriguing, soul-piercing in them, and filtering out everyone else.

The basic story is that of Newland Archer (Daniel Day Lewis), a young pillar of upper-crust 1870s New York society. He has a non-conformist's mind, but is outwardly respectful of the culture in which he lives. About the time that he becomes engaged to May (Wynona Ryder), there arrives in his world the Countess Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer.) The Countess is fleeing a marriage and maltreatment from Count Olenski, from whom she wants that then-scandalous thing: divorce. The Countess herself is the subject of rumors of improprieties with her husband's secretary.

Thus, as Newland and the Countess find something unique in one another and fall in love, it presents Newland with an agonizing dilemma: is there any honorable way to be with the potential love of his life, given his engagement to May, and Olenska's marriage to the Count? But it would be a crime against art to spoil that mystery for you, so enough said.

One remarkable aspect of this film is that the characters' society not only constrains the conduct of everyone involved, but also the expressions of their feelings. Daniel Day Lewis in particular carries a burden of conveying the most powerful emotions without being able to voice them. He does this in one of the most magnificent performances ever on film, often acting wordlessly through means as subtle as trembling fingers or a clenched jaw.

You are shown quite clearly how he falls in love with the Countess. She gives voice to the irreverent thoughts that never occur to May, and which Newland feels but would never speak. The looks of shocked amusement on Daniel Day Lewis's face in many of these early conversations are a vital part of the gradual, but irresistible, warming of their early relationship.

What unfolds is a story of love, and heartbreak, of choices made, of responsibilities met, and of opportunities missed and gone forever. It's a tale that will affect anyone who ever wonders about the path not taken in their own life. And it's also a tale of the clash between societal norms and individual desires, especially limiting the options of an unlucky woman.

Upon first viewing, the visual genius of the film is very striking. Stills of the film rival the great paintings of art history (and in at least one instance, nearly parodying a famous Seurat.) There's tremendous visual splendor and opulence.

I found that on repeat viewings, however, I was equally amazed by the film's dynamic qualities - the way that one scene draws you into the next, often with the beautiful orchestral score as an ineluctable link between scenes. The sequence in which the yellow roses are ordered and delivered is a gorgeous montage of a few seconds, driven by the backing music.

Oh, and that music - Elmer Bernstein composed one of the most emotive scores ever for a film, and several of the scenes draw their power from it. Though the score is very reminiscent of the third movement of the Brahms third symphony, it may actually exceed the Brahms in several places for emotional power.

It's a film that one watches and repeatedly has the feeling, "This is one of the great scenes in all of film." But those fantastic scenes just keep coming, one after the other. I have particular favorites: the scene where the Countess whispers to Newland in the opera box, the scene where he approaches her as she looks out at the lighthouse, and of course, the incredibly moving final scene.

I don't know what else to say about the final scene other than that watching it for the first time was a more powerful experience than I'd had at the cinema at any time prior.

Strangely, this is one of the lesser-known Scorsese films. I'm a great fan of Scorsese's other works, but he certainly never made a gangster film as great as this. I suspect that this one just didn't find its natural audience. Perhaps people expected it to be a lighter romantic costume drama. Instead it is an intense story of romantic agony, told from the viewpoint of a conflicted male. Perhaps it reflects that male perspective too much to be a chick flick, whereas not enough men were interested in watching this story. Perhaps it was just too subtle. Whatever the cause, the lack of appreciation is unfortunate, because it's a story that should have great power for everyone who has ever been deeply and truly in love, especially if that love might slip away forever.

I saw this film repeatedly after it was first released, but several years had passed before I saw it again this past weekend with my wife. It's like Daniel Day Lewis says to Michelle Pfeiffer late in the film: "Every time I see you, you happen to me all over again." And so it is with this masterpiece.

Gorgeous flawed film.......2007-05-13

With stunning period costumes, lavish interiors and lush outdoor scenes Scorsese's THE AGE OF INNOCENCE has to be one of the most beautiful movies ever filmed. The movie stays remarkably faithful to Edith Wharton's 1920 novel in part because Joanne Woodward provides convincing voice over narration often using Wharton's exact words. The narration also clues the viewers in to the customs and hypocrisies of old New York which play such an important part in the plot. The major flaw in the film is the grand love between "The Countess" Ellen (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) seemed unconvincing to this viewer. Although Pfeiffer is very beautiful in the film she does not seem particularly intelligent, free thinking or independent which are the qualities that supposedly attract Day-Lewis's character. Day-Lewis is adequate in his part though I really could not see him as the great love of Pfeiffer's Ellen's life either. It is Winona Ryder as the sweet seeming but astute and determined May who really takes the acting prize. The rest of the film is very well cast and this is an excellent film for those who love historical dramas and faithful film adaptations of great books.

I love this film, i saw it right after dangerous liasions, and even though everybody used to talk about DL, i think this one is much better.

The set design and costumes were lovely, but the actors were just horrible. Daniel Day-Lewis is usually outstanding but even he can't bring life to this role. Of course, you can't blame him for not loving the always annoying Wynonna Ryder...but how could he choose the histrionic and insipid Michelle Pfeiffer, who doesn't begin to do justice to Countess Olenska? Her red eyes and her heaving bosom have gotten tiresome (here as in Dangerous Liasons)...Not to mention the narration...thanks Joanne...you're the best...but why not just do the audio instead of this annoying voice over.

Like any good brand, the Rolling Stones know to preserve the formula even when updating the package, and this long-form concert video underscores that market strategy. As with each of their tours since the early '80s, the quartet, augmented by a discreet auxiliary of backup musicians, gives the fans new eye candy while dishing up a familiar set list spiked with Mick Jagger's lip-smacking vocals and Keith Richards's signature guitar riffs. The visual twists are at once spectacular and conservative: a cyclopean main stage design with massive pillars (presumably the Babylonian connection), a vast oval video screen (shades of Big Brother), and a hydraulic bridge enabling a midconcert sortie into the audience, with the Stones playing a more stripped-down, intimate set on a small satellite stage.

That huge physical setting doubtless made the live shows eye-filling rock spectacles, but the video crew necessarily accepts the limitations of the small screen, focusing more on close-ups of the band, rapid cuts, and racing, hand-held tracking shots to convey excitement while keeping the viewer close to the action. The evening's repertoire sticks to the band's most familiar hits, and if the Glimmer Twins occasionally slip their masks to let the routine show, the real wonder is how effectively they keep the playing focused. During the first half of the program, the band's newest songs (especially "Saint of Me" and "Out of Control") elicit conspicuously higher energy from the band, if not the audience. But just as the show seems doomed to a certain anomie, the escape onto the smaller, no-frills stage pumps up players and crowd alike, particularly when they launch into "Like a Rolling Stone," a cover that winds up sounding like a great idea too long deferred. --Sam Sutherland

Superior Concert Video.......2006-10-31

This is by far the best concert video I own. The Stones were on top of their game at this St. Louis concert, soulful, bluesy, and rocking. The cameras stay on the band the whole time, unlike many current concert videos that seem to think the viewer wants to watch the audience. The sound is CD quality, the picture and color is vivid, the editing is tight. The highlight for me is Keith Richards' "I Wanna Hold You" and some incredible versions of many classics. The songs from the Bridges to Babylon album are excellent and it is funny how quickly some of them faded from the permanent repertoire. The fact of the matter is the Stones have enough excellent songs to do ten different concerts.

I highly recommend this DVD. It is superior to the Four Flicks, and a lot less expensive. Five Stars.

If you must buy one Rolling Stones DVD concert...you must choose this one; no doubts about that. Great artists performance and just hits on this. I'm a new Rolling Stones fan just because this DVD. Great value!

Loved It!.......2006-02-25

Here you'll find Mick, Keith and the boys together with some "cool friends" doing what they do best. ROCK & ROLL!

They have the lovely & talented Lisa Fischer on backup vocals. She really used her "assets talents," all of them. Her voice hits all of those amazing notes that few singers will ever hope aproach.

The "really cool" Joshua Redmond joins in with his saxophone.

Lets not forget the inovative theatrics that we've come to expect from the Stones. The never disapoint me in that area. In this film they do actually cross "a bridge" to Babylon.

If you love the Stones and you love seeing them live or wish you could, this is a great way to see them!

All right, I admit it. I am a huge fan, (can't fool you) since the begining. I've spent more than I'll admit this year on concert Tickets, T-Shirts and DVD/CDs. Not to mention plane tickets!

this dvd is stones but not up to their best. any stones are great so since this is fairly inexpensive i might recommend it

Captures high energy and party atmosphere........2006-01-01

This solid show has some great moments. The 10 minute Miss You version here is the best available, with the whole band acting like they never want it to end. Lisa Fischer, the awesome support singer, is in rare form as she and Mick bump and grind all over the stage. She gets in everybody's business on this one. Surprisingly, Miss You doesn't appear on Four Flicks. Neither does Its Only Rock and Roll, which is a highlight from the B-stage here. Also is a terrific Wild Horses duet with Dave Matthews and Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone-performed better here than on Stripped. Another highlight is Keith's I wanna Hold You, from Undercover. The sound is a slight step down from Four Flicks, but certainly great for when it was released. At the end we get a blazing Juming Jack Flash with Mick sporting cool shades and Keith and Ronnie weaving in and out like they're trying to outdo themselves. Lots of Fun!
